Solve : OK, so here is my problem....HELP!?

Answer»

Let me describe my setup first. I have a pc upstairs, and then another one downstairs (both running xp pro sp2) and an xbox 360, also downstairs. I recently bought a Linksys wrt54g router and a linksys wireless card. Originally I had the router connected directly to the pc and 360 downstairs by network cables, and then had the wireless card on the pc upstairs. I decided to change this setup though SINCE the upstairs pc is my primary one and the wireless is a little slower than being directly connected. SO I moved the router upstairs and then put the wireless card into the pc downstairs, got it all running and no problems, and I just FIGURED I'd get a wirless adapter for the 360 later. So anyway, short story long, last night I decided to connect the 360 with a network cable so I could download a few demos, but I can't get any connection. I tried a number of different things, reconnecting using a different port on the router, pushing the little button on the front (though I think that only helps when trying to set up a wireless connection), etc. The only thing I haven't tried yet is pushing the reset button on the back of the router. Why is the 360 not detecting the connection when it was connected that way before? Is it because it was through another pc? On my router setup screen, it shows the 360, but the connection is not active and it doesn't GIVE me any options other than to view detail. What can I do to fix this?I seem to remember having a similar ISSUE with my wireless 360 setup...

Are you running encryption on your wireless network? If you are you will have to enter your encryption key, the long one, not the passphrase used to generate it in your Xbox setup. I would also check and make sure your MAC is entered into your MAC address filter on your router (if you are using one). No, I'm not using wireless for the 360, I have it hardwired directly to the router using a 50ft network cable. My fault, I read the post to fast...

I am not near my xbox360 (at work ), but I would suggest poking around the network settings on it. I remember they are somewhat buried. See if you can delete your current connection and recreate it. There is also a utility on the xbox website where you can do a quick network connect with a USB thumb drive. Though that may or may not be for wireless setup, my memory is foggy on the specifics.Quote

Quote
Is it because it was through another pc?

This is contradictory. If a pc had been used as the gateway for the xbox, then the xbox will have to be reconfigured so that the router is the gateway and DHCP server.Yeah, I may not have worded this right. What I meant was the 360 and the downstairs pc were first connected directly to the router, but now the router is upstairs and the downstairs one is wireless. What I meant by that question was would it have messed up the settings to have had it connected in the first place, then disconnected it, then reconnected it after the router was installed with another pc?If nothing changed except the location, the settings should not have changed. What IP does the xbox have? If it is 169.xxx.xxx.xxx and is set to automatically acquire an IP, sometimes a simple reboot of the router will do the trick. Leave all the machines running, disconnect the router power for about 10 seconds, then reconnect. All the IP's should be reassigned/renewed.Yeah, after pressing the reset button, that was going to be my next step. I'll try it tonight when I get home.

Solve : Networking two vista laptops>Log in??

Answer»

I am trying to network TWO vista laptops. I can connect to the lap TOPS, and they see eachother. When you try to connect I get prompted for a user name and password.I have them seeing eachother wirelessly, and through a CROSSOVER cable, I just dont KNOW how to get the log in info. I have a desktop that has XP on it, and I was able to connect the lap tops to the desktop using the administrator user name and password. I know how to change that user and pw, in xp. I am thinking that I need to use the administrator user name and password for the laptops too, but I dont know how to setup/change the admin pw for vista. Can someone please provide some insite on how to setup/change the admin password for vista?
Thanks!Start/Control Panel/User Accounts then Click on Change Password. It's the same way you would change it in XP.Thanks, that got me in with the default user account. I was thinking that I NEEDED to do it with the administrator account. Thats what I was looking for, how to setup/change the administrator password for vista. Thanks!

Solve : modem, blah?

Answer»

I was trying to install a ROUTER TODAY. A long STORY made short...

Before I hooked my cable modem to my router, I didn't need a usb cable connected from the modem to my computer in order to get online. Now I do.

At the same time, neither the router nor the other computer I was trying to route (?) to requires the usb connection in order to get online, just the network cable.

For a specific reason I don't want to require the USB connection. I want it back the way it was, but I can't understand what's going on. The modem has a usb connector on the back, but didn't originally come with a usb cable and one wasn't necessary, until now.

It's a webSTAR 2100, if that HELPS. Help me?

Just use network cables instead...i'm not sure i understand the problem. You should be hooked up like this.....

modem.....router......computer.

All using Ethernet cables. If you can't get on the web like this it is because your router is not setup.

You can get some troubleshooting INFO here.....

After one hour the problem is solved without any do.
After some time the same problem occur with other user.I can't understand what the problem is?
Ya one thing is that the message is occur that "Many user are connected to sbs. So,it can't able to connect other people."
But in my office we are only 15 people & among them at a time for about 9 peoples are connected.
I don't think so they are many peoples!!!
I search for it on google but it helpless.(I helpless)

Nency.
How many licenses (CALs), are on the server for client PCs? You should be able to locate the information through the Server Management Icon. (I found mine is in the start menu of the Admin account.) The CALs/Licences are either computer or person based. But either one you are using, you should have as many licences as users/PCs connecting to the server.

That is where I would start, when you get an error message SIMILAR to the one you had.

Solve : Can connect through router, but not directly to the internet?

Answer»

Specs:
D-Link DI-514 router
Windows XP Home Edition SP2
WebStar modem
Charter Digital Cable

My sisters and my computer were both hooked up to the internet through the D-Link router. Well, she unplugged anything and everything to get her computer packed away. I thought it would be nice to be connected to the internet directly instead of going through the router. As the title says, it's not working. I reset the modem several times until I tried just using the router again.

I hope that's enough info to give you guys a good idea of what's going on.Reconfigure the NIC so that it points to modem instead of the router. It likely is looking for the router to get an IP ADDRESS.Your post reminded me that I had set up a static IP back when I was behind the router. So, I decided to switch it back to "Obtain an IP address AUTOMATICALLY". Now... that kind of worked. I can search the web with GOOGLE and browse the other two tabs I have open, which are this website and wikipedia.

Would reconfiguring the NIC still work? If so, how do I go about doing that? I tried looking it up myself, but NIC can stand for a LOT of different things apparently.Fixed it. Just noticed the "obtain DNS server address automatically" option wasn't selected right before I closed the window. Everything seems to be working now.

Even though I kinda figured it out, there's no way I would have remembered that without your help. Thanks!

Solve : Trouble Connecting Wireless Router?

Answer»

I recently bought a D-Link DKT-110 Wireless Router but when I try to set up it says 'Connect the (Internet) port to the modem's Ethernet port.'

As far as I know my modem doesn't have an ethernet port. I have a Wanadoo Broadband Modem, does anyone have any idea what I should do?

Thankyou for any help in advance.Modem line to the computer you had hooked up before is the ethernet line...
Hook this into the router you purchased and you should be good to go...Sorry, I'm not really following you.

I put in the line I had going to my broadband into the router but it didn't work.

I have the LAN 1 socket in from the computer and broadband is connected to the computer and the PHONE line. So now how do I connect the router internet socket, I'm finding it hard to understand as it didn't give much away on the installation and there was no new cable for this so I assumed I was to use and existing one.You need to connect the cable from your broadband to the router, this is the cable you had connected to the computer before you got the router. The cable need to go in to the router's internet port. This port looks like the other ports on the router but is usually separated from the rest. I TOOK the cable from my broadband to the computer but it doesn't fit into the internet socket or anywhere else on the router.

The cable has a slim rectangular end but all the router sockets are similar to phone line sockets. I'm sorry I can't elaborate much more on that.

Maybe I need something to be able to connect them together. I'm just hoping that I'm not unable to use the router at all.Is this the type of plug your broadband modem has?

If that is the case, see if your modem doesn't have a port like the ones on your router.Yes, that's the plug from my modem to the computer.

I think I'm supposed to put this from my modem to the router but the router has 5 sockets, 4 LAN and 1 Internet, all needing the same type of plug. They are all similar to phone line sockets that click when they're pushed in.Do you modem have a port like the ones on the router? The reason I ask is because you can't connect the modem to the router via USB. (The cable in my previous picture was an USB cable.) This only works for modem to computer connections.

You'll need this type of cable to make a connection from your modem to your router.
So everything should be working if I get this cable and connect it from the router to my modem?

On my modem I don't have any space. I have a fixed in cable going to the computer and a cable going to the phone line.Quote from: Cullen16 on August 04, 2007, 07:14:31 PM

So everything should be working if I get this cable and connect it from the router to my modem?
I can't TELL you that before you tell me if your modem got a port like the ones on your router. But if it does then yes it should work. Modems often come with this kind of cable, so check that you don't already have one somewhere.Yes, it has 1 socket like the ones on my router which is being USED by the connection to the phone line. There is a difference between those:

a phone cable is 2 wires and a Ethernet cable (the one you need) has 8 wires.

Jonas So in other words your modem doesn't have the required port and therefore you can't hook up that router. I would suggest you contact your ISP and request another modem. You need one with an Ethernet port.

Solve : Modem Blocked?

Answer»

When I tried to connect to the internet, it said "The modem is being blocked" And it says that everytime I try to connect to the internet. My phones are not WORKING properly also. I think that thats the problem but I'm not sure. Can anyone help out?Well there are only 2 options:
1) Reset modem
2) call ISP

Jonas If your phones aren't working you need to call your service provider.
But out of curiosity... what EXACTLY is TELLING you your modem is being blocked?@jonas: How do I reset my modem? I'll call my isp also.

@deerpark: My internet service provider; AOL. My type of internet is DIAL-up and when I click connect, it says "The modem is being blocked." during the dial-up.

I'm still open for other suggestions people. The more help, the better.Jonas was referring to a broadband modem, I don't think you can reset a dial up modem.
This sounds like a problem with either AOL or your phone line. Either way it isn't something we can help you with I'm afraid. You definitely need to call your ISP. They are most likely blocking your connection for some reason. Did you pay your BILL?

Solve : Cannot browse and download at the same time?

Answer»

Hi,

First I want to apologize in advance if this is a rather simple problem.

Here's the back story. I live in Japan but I am from Canada. I brought my computer with me from Canada, and used it here for over a year with no problems. The other day my computer goes belly up which means I have to buy a new computer. Unfortunately, UNLESS I wanted an iMac I couldn't get a computer with an English OS. I can speak Japanese but not fluent, but I went ahead and got a computer yesterday. Brand new Toshiba Dynabook with Windows Vista Office Personal.

I connected to the internet this morning. I that was no problem and I was able to browse the web. I started downloading programs that I use to use on my old computer. One of which is uTorrent. I used uTorrent for months here with my old computer and had no problem. However, now when I try to run it, my internet connect almost stops. All browsers give me the "Connect Timed Out" or "Cannot connect" page. MSN Messenger seems to run fine still. The torrents download but I can not browse the internet while they download which limits me to one at a time. I PHONED my ISP here in Japan and they said it had nothing to do with them and was probably to do with the antivirus software. I turned off McAfee which came with the computer but still the same problem occurs. Once I close uTorrent I can browse again. I tried also using BitTorrent and BitComet but the same problem occurs. I asked some Japanese friends for help but all have said they have the same problem. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.I think I KNOW what you mean...

When my brother uses bitcomet on the other computer, the internet connection is disabled for everyone, ALTHOUGH when he uses bitcomet on this computer, the internet is fine.

It might be the program settings but i'm not really sure.

Wait a bit and someone will come along with a definite answer.Browse
or Torrent

It's up to you.
But i believe CDO made a good point above...Quote from: Blockenjr on August 24, 2007, 12:18:42 AM

Ideas to explore:
Ask the other here what would happen if you somehow had uTorrent listening on the same PORT as your browser? I don't know myself.

What port to you have uTorrent listening for incoming connections on?
Try changing that port.

What have you configured as global max upload speed?
global max download speed?
tried lowering them?
Maybe that will allow the browser some bandwidth.

Last idea for now to try:
http://forum.utorrent.com/
Lots of utorrent users there. Maybe somebody else has had the same problem as you are experiencing.

When you do figure it out, please do post back here and describe the solution.

Solve : VONAGE?

Answer»
Hello,

We have vonage as our home PHONE SERVICE provider and we also have a wireless network set up. The PROBLEM is that when the notebook is on and on-line or my step-daughters is on her BEDROOM PC (wireless network card) , the home phone becomes very crackly...enough that I will call the person back later or use my cell. The hard wired PC does not pose a problem. The router is a linksys wireless G 2.4Ghz. One of the home phones is 900megahertz. Perhaps I should be calling Vonage, but if anyone has had this trouble and can shed some light on the solution that would be great.

Thanks,
Kelly

What I mean is when I am connected to my modem AND uTorrent is RUNNING AND UPnP is ENABLED the port works. When I turn off UPnP or I close uTorrent or when I connect through my router the port stops working. I did follow the instructions for my router (US Robotics) It seems to me that when uTorrent is running and UPnP is enabled and I am connected directly to my modem the port works. When I close uTorrent or disble UPnP and try the port test again it fails. So it looks like uTorrent is AUTOMATICALLY opening the ports in my modem with UPnP. But when I am connected through my router the port isn't bieng opened on the modem. I can't find anything on the uTorrent forums. I posted my problem there.Quote from: Soviet Genius on August 04, 2007, 07:27:57 PM

Solve : Changing my network over to wireless...?

Answer»

I currently have 3 computers on a home network, which I now want to change over to WIRELESS. I have my wireless router. My question is, will I have to "re-network" everything once I change over to this router, or will it keep all of my SETTINGS?

Thanks! How did you SET up the network?
Which OS's are the computers running?
In a normal case the answer would be no they shouldn't be re-networked.

Jonas I'm running Windows XP. I actually had someone else network my computers together. I just don't think I'm quite knowlegeable enough to do it myself. That was my concern with changing over to wireless, and whether I should have someone do it for me.Well to be honest MUCH people have problems to instal a secured wireless network.
But if you need any help just ask us we love to help people.
With re-networking you mean the workgroup or do you mean you will have to change settings in ORDER to make the wireless Internet work?
Well the workgroup won't change but you will have to install you're wireless router and therefor change the settings of the router.

Solve : Unable to browse any webpages!!!?

Answer»

I have a windows xp home sp2, with a gigabit ethernet adapter. MY computer says that i'm connected to the internet and running at 100mbs. But i can't browse any WEBPAGES. I've checked my internet protocol settings, but they seem to be normal. I've even tried resetting everything to default, but it STILL doesn't work. I've tried manually setting my ip address, dns servers, and submask gateways, but still i can't browse any webpages. I have a level one router connected to my pc, and i just got a new modem. I've checked and rechecked all my internet connection settings, and even re-set them, but nothing helps. I've tried connecting directly to my modem (not via router) but it still doesn't help. I've scanned my pc for viruses, and even ghosted my system to a 2 month old status. I've checked all my cables and wiring, even changed them, but still... I NEED help, is there anyone who thinks they know what is wrong with my pc?Did you try connecting directly to you're modem.
If that doesn't even work you'll have to contact you're ISP.

Jonas i've tried direct connection already, and i've contacted my ISP too. THey say that everything seems to be working fine. My wireless internet is working, just not my desktop. Any further advice?it could be you're network card.
Is there any other computer that is able to connect to the internet?

Jonas yes. my isp sent some ppl to check my network configuration and settings. THey also tried it using their laptop. it worked fine. However, i thought a network card comes with the motherboard. I tried using motherboard's lan card too, but it doesn't work.I assume you tried updating you're driver did you?

Jonas No actually, i didn't. Do you know where i can get the download?type the win key+pause break -> hardware -> device manager
Look for you're network card and right click it. Then click update.

Jonas I re-installed windows home edition, and then upgraded it to sp2. But then, my internet went back to LIMITED to no connection. I tried direct connection to the modem, and it worked fine. Is there something wrong with my router configurations?

All help appreciated, thanks !!!BUMP...

Sorry for the triple post

But someone MUST be able to come up with some solution(s) for this irritating problem.

Again, thank in advance.Sounds like either a problem with your router or your modem... do you have access to another router?Well it's a combined modem + router, brand new and the old one experienced similar symptoms. So, no we don't have a spare router we can try at the moment. My dad might be able to get one from his work but I doubt that's the problem.

I think we'll end up having to get the ISP to take a look, but I'd like that to be last resort. If you've had the same problems with two modems it pretty LIKELY to be either a problem with your line or the ISP. Either way you'll probably need to contact the ISP.Try posting your problem at dslreports.com . You can probably get more expert advise since they will likely be more FAMILIAR with your router and connection type.

Solve : Limited to no connectivity? Argh. Help!?

Answer»

I have a Dlink DI 604 connecting my TWO XP machines and an xbox 360. I have the router set up correctly and have the LATEST firmware. The problem I'm having is if the router isn't used for a while (like overnight, for example) and I then try to get online, I get the "LIMITED to no connectivity" message and I can't access the internet. The only way to get it to reconnect is to unplug it from the router and then reconnect it. Yeah, sure, that works, but it's a pain. Is there any way to set it up so that it doesn't drop the connection? Its a problem that almost everyone with wireless Internet has. (even I have it.)
But normally you only have to reset the router once or twice a month.
So if you're sure that you did set all the settings of the router wright then I can only say sorry man.
You could try a total reset but...

Jonas This is a wired router though, no wireless. Is it still a common issue, something that should happen every day?No it shouldn't happen everyday. If it's happening that often it might be a sign that the router is malfunctioning. You could try resetting it and see if that changes anything.check your network card settings on your computer. Look for the "allow the computer to power down this to save power" setting. Normally a check box and disable it.

The machine may need a reboot after to get the setting to work.

It SOUNDS like your machine is shutting off your NIC and when you try to use it the next day your router doesn't know who your NIC is....

Give it a shot and see if it helps

I'll try it, thanks. Otherwise I may just buy a new router. I bought this one used off of Ebay for $15 and sometimes you get what you pay for, lol.Quote from: Spoiler on July 31, 2007, 09:33:11 AM

OK, I attempted this....one problem, I never found anything stating "allow the computer to power down this to save power". I looked under network connections and network adapters, but never found this PARTICULAR setting. Pretend you are speaking to someone who knows nothing about setting up a network (you are, by the way, lol) and if you can, give me step by step instructions. Thanks!Control Panel > Network Connections
Right click on your local network
properties
Click on the settings button for your lan card aka. network card
and it's the right most tab

Solve : how to change a network bandwidth?

Answer»

hi
i have a NETWORK in my home with 2 PCs and they use same OS(win xp sp2)
my question is that:
how to change bandwidth of a lan card
usually the bandwidth is 100 mb or 1000 mb
but i want change it to under 1 mb and lesser like 64 kb
10 meg is about as low as you go.Yeah changing the speed of your lan card isn't a feasible solution. You would need to use some kind of software to limit the amount of bandwidth the system can use... I can't think of one RIGHT now but I'll see if I can find something.

I will need to know what operating system the computer runs though.i told they use Windows XP pro SP2I guess my question would be ...why ? ?patio, you are mean The question is "how?", not "why?".

With some firewalls you have that option, but I don't know an EXAMPLE. And some other programs do the same, but I was never interested to view the problem in that way, I ussually ask myself "how to INCREASE bandwidth?", "how to make a better network, how to improve an existing network?".

It's first time in my life when I hear someone that asks to DECREASE network performances.

http://www.google.ro/search?q=bandwidth+limiter&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

But it is different from what you ask...let me that tell a describe:
i told i have 2 PCs in network with crossover cable
PC B by PC A is connect to internet that mean PC A use 2 lan card.
i dont need to SHARING in my network.my internet connection speed is 512 kb
i want to give 384kb to PC A and 128kb to PC B
in fact i want set a speed limition for PC B
this is my reason

See the link in my other post. I searched on a search engine (you can try on altavista, yahoo or something else) with "bandwidth limiter". You may try with "network shaper", "bandwidth shaper" etc

Your last post says something else than your first post.

Solve : Connectiong troubles?

Answer»

Well that wasn't the thing that worked.

I'm not exactly SURE what fixed it, but I PUT in a new Ethernet cable, is it possible that my old one was corrupt? It works FINE now.Yep it perfectly possible!
That will be the PROBLEM.(Was the problem)

Jonas
Perhaps the copper PINS at the end of your old ethernet cable had broken. That can sometimes happen if you use it for several years.

Solve : Networking Problems MTU/Router???

Answer»

Xbox 360
OS - Windows XP
Router - Linksys WRT54G
Broadband Modem - Motorola?

Lately, as in the past week or so we've been having a lot of connection problems on our home network. Things like web surfing are fine, but when we try more bandwidth consuming tasks like joining games on the computer; Battlefield 2, Warcraft III. or try playing on Xbox Live we usually get disconnected from the game room in under a few minutes, and I THINK when we become disconnected on the Xbox it usually only disconnects from the game room itself and not the Xbox Live service. So far I've tried playing Halo2 and GRAW2.

When we tryed connecting our Xbox with the wireless adapter the connection troubleshooter said it had an MTU error. I changed the MTU setting on the router from Auto to Manual 1492, (I saw that # Searching through some other posts) and then it worked but I might have just been lucky because I've never had to mess with the MTU on it before to get xbox live to work.

I think the PCs and the Xboxs connection to the router appears fine, and that all the IP settings are configured right. I've tried messing around with the network by trying to bypass the router to the modem or WIRING the things to the router instead of using the wireless cards and the 360s adapter, but nothing is working. It just seems like our connections are dropping off when were in games

I have Roadrunner high speed I think, I don't think it's all that fast but these connection problems are much worse than usual. I did an ONLINE speed test and it said I had a dl speed of 1.2 mbps and an upload of 369 kbps. I think this is normal though for it though so I can't figure out why my games keep getting dropped.

It might be our router which I've had problems with before. Sometimes it has to be rebooted ESPECIALLY when I leave on big downloads during the night. Maybe it's just getting old and I need to get a new one?I hooked up a different router and were still having problems... I tryed a direct connection to the modem and we still had problems. So this must be an isp problem right? It sounds like it. You said you've tried connecting your computer/xbox directly to the modem with a cable right? Because some wireless connections can be a bit too flaky for gaming as well. Yes, I did so I guess ill just go call their tech supportWhen you try connecting, do you get a message saying that you're limited to no connection?

Solve : How to protect my wireless signal??

Answer»

Alright, I gave up on my Dlink router and bought a Linksys Wireless-G Router (WRT54G) and a Linksys Wireless Desktop Adapter (WMP54G). I may be back here later wanting help if I can't get them set up properly (fingers crossed!!) but my question for now is, assuming I get them up and running properly, how do I BLOCK my signal from outside users? The guy at the store told me I shouldn't have a problem setting up the router, but just to look online to find out how to block the signal. Real helpful...

Well I have the same router and normally you should be able to block outside users with a MAC filter but that isn't working. (Maybe you have more luck)
I assume you have installed the router with the CD that comes with the router.
In that case you've changed the PW and maybe the IP.
Normally the IP should be 192.168.1.1.
NOTE: Before changing settings I would advise connecting true Ethernet cable and not wireless.
You could try typing that in you're web browser.
than you should get a message asking for user name and PW.
If this is still standard you shouldn't fill in a user and use admin as PW.
Then you will get to the control panel of you're router.
Let me know if you got to that point and if you want to use a MAC filter or just a PW protection.

Jonas Jonas MAC filtering is not a good form of protection, because breaking it is a very very very trivial thing to do. I'm not going in to details here, but it can be done in seconds.

What you need to do roccenstein is configure the router to ENCRYPT the wireless signal. Then any computer who wants access will need to enter a password. Any wireless router today supports WEP encryption and most supports WPA as well. WPA is by far the best form so use it if available. In your router's setup there should be a section where you can configure this. It's a bit hard to tell you the exact steps since they vary from router to router. But it should be somewhere under the wireless settings, POSSIBLY called encryption.

Of course you can use mac filtering as a second line of defense but I would never recommend it as your only protection.I agree with deerpark.

MAC filtering is used in cases like this: you have an expanded wireless network, at least a few access-points, and you want to specify to each access point what devices (MAC adress) are suppossed ("allowed") to connect to it. It's a measure of physical network management (what device connects to what access point) and not a security measure. Here's a link that may help you do this step by step.
http://kimpeacocke.blogspot.com/2006/06/setting-up-linksys-wrt54g-wireless-g.html
Let us know if you have any problems following the guide.
Hope this helps.
Wireless security is both necessary and occasionally a headache, BELIEVE me I know.
But remember - you only need to do it once, and if you skip it you'll have major problems, so make sure you do exactly what the guide says.
One last thing - apparently your router supports WPA2 security.
I recommend enabling that instead of the WPA-PSK encryption the guide recommends.
You may need a firmware and OS upgrade/patch to support this.Well I didn't know MAC was so insecure but I can tell you how to enable WPA protection.
When you get to the control panel click wireless -> wireless security -> security mode: WPA -personal or WPA - enterprise.
This is as much as I know.
Which one is the best?
And what is the best encryption? TKIP or AES.
And there is a key renewal. Does that means that you have to change you're key every 3600 sec?
Or is the passphrase always the same?

Jonas

BTW: I use WEP is WPA much better?
Yes WPA is much better and WPA2 is even better. Unfortunately many slightly older wireless adapters doesn't support WPA2.

Avoid WEP if you can, it has been proven to be very insecure. If I remember correctly the encryption can be broken in minutes.

WPA enterprise GIVES the best security but you need a separate authentication server to use it, so this is not feasible for your average home user. So stick with WPA personal.

The key renewal is an internal mechanism in the encryption scheme. It has nothing to do with the pass phrase.

AES is used in WPA2 and delivers the best encryption but TKIP is supported by more wireless adapters so you might have to use that instead. But it is (only) to protect outsiders to connect to you're Internet. (I don't believe someone will take the time to crack it just so they have Internet.)
That doesn't mean they have access to you're computer.
Or is it easier to connect to you're computer once you are in the same SSID?
My question is: is it worth changing: - At my mum's house from WEP to WPA
- At my dad's house from MAC filter to WPA

My dad has hired a computer specialist to make sure it was well protected.
I did it at my mum's house.

Jonas Getting access to a wireless network could make it easier to break in to a computer, because most firewalls have less restrictive rules for computers on the same LAN.

I think your dad should get his money back if a so called "computer specialist" told him MAC filtering was sufficient protection. Like viking said, MAC filtering is not really protection at all, but more a way of controlling what computers connect where.

Of course the chance of someone breaking into your wireless network is pretty small, but then again the chances of someone breaking into your house is pretty small as well... But I bet you still lock the door when you leave.
Protecting a wireless network takes very little effort and is something you only need to do once, so why not do it properly?
Oh yes btw it is important you select a strong password. No encryption is stronger than the password used.
I personally use a 63 character password with all random symbols. That is needed if you want the full 256 bit encryption WPA offers. I just store it on a flash drive so I don't have to remember it when a new computer needs access.
But of course a smaller password will usually be sufficient. I'm just the paranoid type.Well it is a friend and to be honest it wasn't cheep.
I love to hear that I did better than the specialist did.
OK it wasn't the best way but it was a better way .
Well I don't think my dad will allow me to change it as he doesn't trust me to change security settings of a specialist. (don't blame him)
Well the chance that they break in to our house is bigger than the change that they break into our computer. (I guess)
As they already broke in to our house.

Solve : connect 2 comps to wifi?

Answer»

I was wondering if its possible to connect my Desktop computer to Laptop computers wifi connection.
My laptop has a much stronger wifi card. Is there anyway i can connect an ethernet cord to the both comps and access the internet on my desktop from my laptop?
Any ideas or help would be useful, thanks in advance,

Kevinoh the lan on my laptop is
802.11b/g wireless lan.
it runs on vista.
and my desktop is running on XP You can do that but you will need a cross cable to connect them or a router in between both computers.
But I suggest a cross cable.
Then GO to (on the laptop) start -> connect to -> wireless connections -> properties -> advanced -> ALLOW other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection.
But then both computers must be in the same network.
Are they?

Jonas im just using a public wifi connection. so i would assuime there not in the same network...
but where does a cross cable connect? Its looks the same like a straight Ethernet cable but inside the cable the wires are twisted like this:

I know it is very unsafe to have a network in a public wifi.
Let me look in to this and FIGURE out if there is a way to protect a network when in the same SSID(public wifi in this case).

Jonas dude thanks for the help! hopefully i can try and figure this out more with the info u told me.Alright I did some research and found out that you can't protect your workgroup.
but then you have to protect both computers from entering and ...
Well if they can enter your workgroup but CAN'T enter your computer they are almost nothing with your workgroup.
Here is how to protect the computer: (Very easy) Just make sure that there isn't a user without PW.
But that means if you're now logging in to your computer without having to give a PW or anything. That would change you will have to enter you're PW each time you boot you're computer.
I think you don't want to share folders on the workgroup do you?
Than you should block printer and file sharing in you're firewall.
BTW: the destkop is yours wright?

Jonas
yeah, i blocked the folder and printer sharing, and yes the desktop is mine. my laptop and desktop are sitting back to back.So you're sure all windows accounts are PW protected?
Ok here is how to create a workgroup.
Click the winkey + pause break
click computername
Click network ID and click next
Click this computer is part of a buisness network and click next
Click my company uses a network WITHOUT a domain. Click next
Give the workgroup a special name and click next
Click finish and restart the computer.
Do this on both computers

Jonas I told you how to configure the host computer but I forgot the client computer the desktop in your case.

To configure the client computer to use the shared Internet connection, FOLLOW these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Network and Internet Connections.
3. Click Internet Options.
4. In the Internet Properties dialog box, click the Connections tab.
5. Click the Setup button.

The New Connection Wizard starts.
6. On the Welcome to the New Connection Wizard page, click Next.
7. Click Connect to the Internet, and then click Next.
8. Click Set up my connection manually, and then click Next.
9. Click Connect using a broadband connection that is always on, and then click Next.
10. On the Completing the New Connection Wizard page, click Finish

Let me know if it worked.

Solve : After reloading Windows XP, Wireless and DVD/CD player not working!?

Answer»

After reloading Windows XP, my wireless feature and DVD/CD player are not working. I have an Averatec 3200 series laptop, and tried getting drivers from there to help, but still haven't solved the problem. Under Device Manager, there are two "Other Devices" which have no drivers installed still - Network Controller; PCI Simple Communications Controller. The Audio and Video controllers were also listed there until I LOADED two drivers for these from the Averatec website, but I'm still not sure if they were the right ones, as I can't find the complete "Part number" they request after the Series type, so I can't choose the right drivers and don't know exactly what would help for the "Network Controller" or the "PCI Communications Controller". Do these have ANYTHING to do with the problem with the Wireless and/or DVD/CD player? Or is there something else? Basically, how can I fix this problem? Thanks! (P.S. I don't have internet access with my laptop, so any solutions must allow me to download from another computer onto flashdrive, if that is necessary). You need drivers. Identify which ones you need then use another computer to download the files and TRANSFER them to your laptop.

Solve : At my wit's end, Connection keeps dropping.?

Answer»

Pretty new here, so, first of all, hello to you all.

I've had this problem for quite awhile actually, but I've just never cared, but its high time something is done.

Every few minutes or so my connection to the internet "drops" for a matter of seconds. I'm not too sure whats happening. I get no pop-up in my system tray saying that my modem has been disconnected or anything, but thats like what happens. Its quite noticable if I'm downloading anything or using an instant messenger service. If I'm downloading something, the download will just stop or if I'm on AIM or something, I won't get any messages for a few seconds until my connection "reconnects".

Now, the interesting thing is, around the same time this started happening (about 2 or 3 months ago now :X) I got a virus on my computer, scvh0st, or something like that, can't remember the name exactly. Ran AVG, picked it up, deleted it, and I thought my problems were over. A few weeks ago, I was trying to see if I could locate the problem (as I sometimes do when I'm bored, like now ), a friend told me to try HijackThis. I ran it, and I found a file with the scvh0st in the name, so i proceeded to get rid of it using HijackThis. Now I THINK (read: hope) its gone, it doesnt show up in HijackThis anymore.

I'm not sure if thats related, but the more info i can give the BETTER, I guess.

Currently Running Windows XP home edition, SP 2.

Also, as a side note, I've replaced my modem within the past few weeks, and I still get dropped, so I'm assuming its a software problem, not hardware related.

Any IDEAS would be much appreciated, god knows I'm out of bright ideas.Try using a Live CD (with Linux: Ubuntu or KNOPPIX) and see if the disconnects still appear. You can download, burn them on cd/dvd and use them for free, legally. You have windows EQUIVALENTS installed on: firefox, clients for instant messenging, you can download files, just like in Windows.

I really think your Windows needs a clean reinstall (delete partition, create partition, format, install), if it is possible: what data do you have on your computer? What applications use what passwords? Do you know them all? Do you have applications that need a key for install from somewhere else? Think at everything important that you have on your computer/windows before doing such an act of force.

Solve : WIFI Help?

I everyone and THANKS in advance for any help.

I have a wireless router 'daisey chained' (connected) to the regular router in which the DSL line goes DIRECTLY in.

I connect to the internet via the wifi, but I cannot print unless I connect directly to the router.

How do I set up the printer to print via wifi?

I am operating windows xp. I have a dell optiplex gx150. The printer is a HP Color laser jet 2840.

the regular router is a brite port broadxent and the wireless router is a westell versalink 327w
Is the printer connected to ANOTHER computer, or to the router?its connected to the regular router, not the wireless router. What sort of printer do you have that connects to a router.

TRY connecting it to your compuuter lol. Quote from: lil_falco on August 12, 2007, 03:02:01 PM

What sort of printer do you have that connects to a router.
That would be a network printer lil_falco. They're pretty common.

You might need to disable the routing on the wireless router jones762000. The wifi router should STILL function and provide wireless access but you'll be assigned an IP by the wired router (I have a similar setup my self). Look for a DHCP server setting on the wireless router and disable it.

Solve : HDD Sharing question?

Answer»

Hello all . . .

I need your help asap ! ! !

I have build a home network with only two computers by using cross over cable. The connection is up and from the "Right PC" i can she the shared disks of the "Left PC". Now in my right pc i have make the HDD "D:\" shared.

From the "Left Pc" I'm DOUBLE clicking on "Right PC" name in MsHome group and then popup a dialog and asking me for USER name and password ? ? ?

How can i stop this ? ? ?

I like to share the D:\ from the Right pc to the Left PC

Thanks . . . You need one user with the same password on both computers.

Explanation DETAILED follows.
You have:

computerA with users UserAA, UserAB, UserAC (I suppose we are talking about windows XP here)

computerB with users UserBA, User BB, UserBC

On computer B you have a share which you want to access from computerA and don't want to be asked username and password for that.

You can access the share on computerB (from computerA = from another computer in your network) if you know the password and the account name of one account from computerB and that user has access rights for reading the folder and access the share from network. And that password should NOT be blank, as far as I know Windows rejects the connection with blank passwords from network.
Another option is to enable user Guest and give him access to that share and read access to the shared folder (I don't recommend you this option).

But, in your case, I SUGEST to create the same account on both computers. Lets say CommonUser, with the same password (so you have CommonUser on computerA with password "zzz", and also you have the user CommonUser on computerB, with the password "zzz" = the same). And, when you want to access the share on the other computer, log in into Windows with that user (CommonUser). It won't ask a username and password now, if you want to access the share. But if you log in computerA with UserAA (which EXISTS only on computerA), it will ask username and password when you try to access the share.

(I should make this explanation more simplist, but I don't know how... )

any ideas? thanks for any help.GO to network places set up a small office network... follow the wizard...

If you need more detailed instructions let me know ! i did that. still no internet. Are you defiantly stating that you are connecting threw a gateway computer?you want to share the files and folders are you want to share your internet conection.if you want to share your files and folders means you just go to my computer and SELECT the partition in that partition TAKE right click and then sharing option will appear you just select that and then go to share as the selected partition give which rights you want to give the other system.this is the proceder to share the file and folders What router?
Can you ping the router? Why do you have to manually assign an IP to laptop? Your router has settings regarding nat translation, dhcp router? (in fact this is the same question as "what router do you have?")

Place here the response from the command:
ipconfg /all >c:\ipcfg.txt
launched on both computers (start a command prompt window and type there the command; then paste here the content from the file c:\ipcfg.txt).

Solve : internet connection sharing.. HELP!?

Answer»

I'm wanting to share a dial-up internet connection, this computer being the one connected to the internet and doing the sharing. I'm wanting to share it with my laptop, using bluetooth. Ok so i've got a bluetooth PAN set up and all, and on this computer i went to it, right-clicked, properties, went to the advanced tab and enabled internet sharing. But there is still no internet on my laptop, although i'm connected to the bluetooth PAN and all. Any help would be appreciated! I'll post some INFO..
First of all i'm using IVT Corporation BlueSoleil on both computers
This computer, the one doing the sharing: Dell Desktop, Dimension 2400. 40GB, 256 MB. Windows Xp home edition with sp2.

Laptop: Hp Pavilion dv6000, 60 GB, 512 MB. Windows Xp professional, media center editiondoes your laptop connect with an error message saying : limited or no connectivity?
or does it just not pick up any signal from your router?Nope, no error messages... And yeah it should be GETTING signal cause I'm always sitting right beside it when I'm trying to do it. I feel like I must just be missing a simple little step somwhere or something cause everything seems to be in order, but yet no internet on my laptop you could call your isp for tech support, and have them try your wireless bluetooth using their laptop.

if it works for them, then it's probrably something wrong on your laptop.

you could try re-setting the router by pushing the small button at the back. i dont have a router... i'm using bluetooth dongles on both computersoh..then. i guess i can't help any further. i use a router, so...wait around for a BIT and someone who uses bluetooth dongles or knows more stuff about networking will come along and help.Alright thanks

This problems occurs on many different websites that i go to. I've tried it on internet explorer and opera but nothing seems to work. If ANYONE has te solution to my problem please reply. I would really appreciate it. THank You!
Run a full spyware and virus CHECK on your machine.

Also tell US what version OS you are running.

I'm actually a noob when it comes to computers, so can u tell me how to do that? Thanks!Right click "my computer" then click properties. In the "General tab" what does it say under system?

Also, you will definitely want to try anti virus software. There has got to be something wrong and you can't troubleshoot until you succeed at this.

Try some of these:

AVG

AdAwareSystem: Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2I also ran the AVG Anti Virus program u recommended.

You could also try this utility.

ccleaner

It will clear up a lot of the useless files and all of the left over Internet files on your PC. Also you should run a spyware removal program like ad aware. AVG says there were no threats but that means no viruses. There could still be MALICIOUS programs on your PC. Run these two programs and then let us know.

restar your compuer and then press the f8 key once in a second snd then some steps are come in that step,a safe mode will appear then you select the safe mode.and then run antivirus & adware, spybot are some other or come to normal mode install the some other browser like mosilla etc...,because some times the Ie6 got corrupted.we worrie about that you just intall the some other broweser.

Solve : laptop not connecting to router but wireless and other wired working fine?

Answer»

i got a laptop from a friend and CANT get it to connect to the router(its WIRED) i tried to ping the address 192.168.1.1 (linksys router) and showed that the connection was not there. i did the same on my other laptop and worked perfectly fine and the internet on my desktop is fine

the non connecting laptop is running winxp pro and so is the desktop

is there any place to check where the problem could be?

thanks for any help i can get You title says "laptop not connecting to router but wireless and other wired working fine". The laptop with the problem, are you trying wireless or LAN? Have you tried both? Is it saying "Limited or not connectivity"?the laptop i am asking about is only wired i have two other computers one is another laptop that is wireless and the other is a desktop that is wired and they get internet just fineIf you go to "control panel/network and internet CONNECTIONS/network connections" you see "LOCAL area connection". Does it say connected under it? Right click that icon and then click on "REPAIR".

If that doesn't work. Right click on the same icon and go to properties. Under the "general tab" scroll down till you see "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and highlight that. Then, click on the "properties" button. Make sure you are set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "obtain DNS server address automatically".

You may also want to double check you Ethernet connections and verify everything is hooked up correctly or that you don't have a busted cable.

It could also be that you don't have any drivers loaded for that network card.

Solve : Can Connect to Homepage Only...Help!?

Answer»

I recently did a system recovery on my DESKTOP...I have Windows XP SP2 (after re-installing all of the updates). I also USE a high speed cable modem. My files were recovered, and everything was working fine until YESTERDAY. Though I can connect to my internet homepage and can link to certain areas on that page, I cannot connect to any other websites (for instance those in my "favorites" folder). I have to control, alt, delete to get out. Any thoughts??
Another quick question...is it a good idea to enable Microsoft automatice updates, or just do it manually?
Thanks to all in advance...What do you have installed as a firewall? Make sure this firewall program isn't blocking all traffic.

It is better to configure Windows update automatically, but you can choose when to install them. Thanks Saviour...right now, I believe I am just using the Windows Firewall program. I have a Linksys wired router also. I was thinking that all these XP Security updates might have something to do with it, but I'm only guessing. Previous to doing a system recovery, I was balking at some of the XP updates because I was afraid this situation might arise....Download and install the latest high-priority updates only for your version of Windows.

Open Windows Firewall through the Control Panel and make sure the box that reads "Don't allow exceptions" is NOT checked. Make sure the firewall is on. Open the "Advanced" tab and click the "Restore DEFAULTS" button and save your settings.

Let us know your results...No luck The firewall is on, the (don't allow exceptions) is off...You said all was working fine until yesterday...what were you doing prior to the problem? It all went bad, when I tried to re-install Media Player (through the Microsoft Update site)...This is not a solution however it will determine if IE7 is the culprit...

DLoad and install FireFox and see if you can visit sites normally. If So you need to check your security settings in Internet Explorer. In addition to patio's suggestion...

When you reinstall or do system recoveries...it's not a good idea to do them over top of a currently installed operating system. This usually creates the types of headaches you are currently experiencing.

As a last resort...I may also recommend a backup of your important files, folders and PROGRAMS...and do a clean install.I would also recommend backing files up and doing a reinstall if Firefox doesn't help you. You said you have to ctrl/alt/delete to get out. Why?

Does the browser just lock up on you and you can't click on anything at all?

Do you have to close down the entire browser and start it back up?

When you are doing updates, are you downloading IE7? (IE7 is slow and it sucks)

Are you having any problems with viruses? A lot of times a system recovery will slow down a trojan, but it will come back. You may want to run AVG or HiJackThis.

Solve : Sharing Folders?

Answer»

Okay. Here the deal. have 2 networked computers using a trendnet wireless router. Mine is using a wireless connection while the other one is wired. Recently I got them on the same workgroup now they can share files... EXECPT The wired computer can ACCESS all the shared file and printers on the network while mine can't access any of the other computer files. When I go to My Network places then click on "View Networked Computers" and click on the other computer I get a message SAYING "oem-xmfl44eeluh (name of the computer) is not acessable. You may not have permerssion" or something like that. I've tried lots of stuff but it still happens. I know their networked right cause I can map a network drive to the Shared Documents folder. Only thing's I'm not liking is that the network doesn't auto update it self "If I add a new sharing folder, mine won't recognize a difference and i'll have to add a network place every time." and shared printers won't show up. Both systems are running Windows XP Home SP2. Please HelpWhat do you have installed as a firewall on the computer that connects wirelessly?

Check the settings on that firewall and make sure it is not blocking other network connections. Both are running Windows Firewall (I will update it...) and are configured to allow sharing filesMake sure (on the wireless one especially) that you are assigning your IP and DNS. This gets kind of complicated with wireless devices. When you connect to a network and just grab whatever IP your router has setting there, it's kind of "temporary". You can setup all of your file sharing and what not, but the moment you CLOSE that computer, you may lose all of your settings. This is a problem I was having for a long time. This may not be the case but is something you should look in to.

Right click on your wireless area connections and go to "properties" Then, highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click on the "properties" button below. This is where you need to assign your settings. You may want to look further in to this option. You need to be familiar with your internal IP's and it is a good idea to set your router up to assign a CERTAIN IP to that computer. You have to check on the computer where you can't connect:
Control panel ->Administrative Tools->Local security policy->USER rights assignments->Access this computer from network->Everyone (check if the Everyone group is mentioned there).
Also, check that "Deny access to this computer from the network" has no mention about the user "Guest" (the "guest" account SHOULD NOT be there).

You will need a user account and a password on the "inaccessible computer".

Solve : Need help setting up router.?

Answer»

First i'll explain the situation. My parents recently purchased a surround sound system that works wirelessly. My router is also in this room and whenever the surround sound goes on it just mucks up my wireless connection to the router and I get a unexpected disconnection. I'm a big online gamer and its very importaint i have a stable connection so i can perform online. I've asked my parents if i can move the router upstairs and connect it via a ETHERNET CABLE but they refuse to let me do so.

So I decided to purchase a new router and hopefully by connectiing it into my phone socket I could OBTAIN the internet connection independantly without the use of the other router. The router connected up fine but sadly it could not pick up the internet. I dont really understand the problem, my household is subscribed to BT broadband, I connect my ADSL router into a phone socket, it detects that it is on a phone line but cant find any internet. I have moved my existing router in the PAST into different phone sockets and it has worked fine.

So to summerise my current set up is: A BT-Broadband HomeHub router that is downstairs in my house. I am connected to it wirelessly, and I keep on getting a rubbish connection due to interferance and my parents refuse to let me move the router into my room.

I want: To have my own router in my room (i have a phoneline/power ect.) and connect my computer to it via a ethernet cable. So essentially our house would have 2 running routers both providing the BT broadband service. Currently I have set up the router and followed the instructions and the ADSL router says its connected, but is unable to connect to the internet. Whenever i put both routers on the BT broadband router messes up and nobody gets internet.

So I would like to know how to set up 2 routers in my house and share the BT-Broadband connection. I'm thinking i have everything set up, just need to configure some settings so the SECOND router can pick up the internet - Thx.The second router was called : Belkin ADSL Router with wireless G.
The first router is just called BT HomehubThe problem might be might be that you've only been assigned one IP by your internet service provider. Then only one router can get connected to the internet. Maybe you should give your ISP a call and check if this is the case.
Also, some ISPs only allow their own equipment to get internet access.
In that case I'd like to ask if anyone is using BT Broadband without the home hub. This is pretty much my problem, but I didn't see it when I searched. I was told they needed to be bridged. Belkin said call Rogers, Rogers said call Belkin.

Solve : Unable to access windows that open new page?

Answer»
Unfortunately my PC will no longer OPEN pages when I click on a link. There are no problems surfing the net as long as the link does not try and open a new page. This means I can no longer log into my banking, or book FLIGHTS through my frequent flyer program. I have had a look through the 'Internet Option' and can't see anything that would be BLOCKING this. I have also tried resetting everything to the original setings but without any luck. Removing the Popup blocker does not fix the problem.

Please help!!!!!!!!What browser are you using?

Example: Internet Explorer 7 or FirefoxInternet Explorer 6What HAPPENS if you right click a link and select open in a new page ? ?When I right click and open in new window it works for links that are currently opening, however, for links that are not opening it opens the existing page, not the next one.Do you have any IE add-ons? Go to "tools/add-ons" Try and disable any addons.

Also, do you have any 3rd party toolbars? Go to "view/toolbars" Disable all that.

I recommend using Firefox. Thanks heaps rasilun, disabling the IE add-ons worked.

Nice work, rasilun...

Flipper...

Which add-ons did you disable...or did you disable all of them?

BTW...Firefox is a great browser...I USE it myself in addition to IE...however, it's not the answer for all IE problems.

For instance...someone posts having a problem with IE...then some one chimes in..."Use Firefox!" That's all "well-and-good"...but have you helped with their IE issue...as rasilun did?

Though rasilun made the same comment, he took it a step further and helped Flipper wit the issue...well done!

I currently work in Tech Support...

I'm use to troubleshooting this way.

Anyways, cheers!

Solve : Wireless Internet Connection?

Answer»

Our wireless internet connection connects 2 computers to the internet, one is a PC and the other is a notebook. The PC stays maxed out @ 54Mbps and the newer notebook ranges in speeds while in one location 24mbps - 54mbps.

Any suggestions for the notebook?

Thanks,
KellyKelly...

I'm assuming when you talk about the 2 computers being connected to your wireless router that one (the PC) is hardwired to the wireless router, while the notebook is connecting wirelessly to the router.

Here's the problem...

Depending on the router and its signal...you may experience different connection speeds...

What is the make and model of your router?

If you don't have a very good signal...this COULD be due to the location of the router, interfernece from other wireless devices...phone, etc.

A decent router with a wide range can help improve your signal...boosting the speed at which you connect.A high gain directional antenna might solve your problem.

The router is a LINKSYS-G 2.4Ghtz 54Mbps Model WRT54G

Even while in the same room as the router or in the room with the other wireless PC the speed fluxuates, right now it reads 24Mbps signal strength Excellent.

Some good reading:

HTTP://www.wikihow.com/Maximize-the-Speed-of-Your-Internet-ConnectionSince it is not the internet connection but LAN connection, the OP has a problem at his end. If the router is set to automatically select the speed, it will set it at the speed that gives the best connection. This is often determined by the wireless device with the lowest speed. There is also the possibility that the wireless network is not secure and that other wireless users in the OP's area are stealing bandwidth...THUS slowing the connection speed.

If you haven't yet secured your wireless network, follow the directions included in your user's MANUAL in order to do so...

If at all possible log into your router's settings page and set the encryption to WAP...more secure than WEP...and create a network password in order to secure it from others in your area who may be acquiring your WiFi connection.

It is a secured wireless network. But why would it fluxuate and the wireless PC not?

Ryanyeah you need to get a wireless card for the computer. if BT are going to send you a router thats great but the PC can't receive a wireless signal without a wireless card. at the minute i am using ASUS V2 - Network adaptor - PCI - 802.11b, 802.11g i got it for about £25 but i have seen cheaper ones and far more expensive one too. USB WLAN cards is another WAY i suppose. Wireless networks can be tricky if you don't have all the right information OK half the battle is won...that is a wireless router . So all you need now for their machine would be a PCI wireless network card...i recommend D-Link or Lynksis but NETGEAR is fine also.

This May Help As Well...

Solve : computers can't all see each other?

Answer»

I have a home network all connected to a Belkin wireless router/modem. Desk top runs XP Pro and is ethernet cable-connected to the router, Sony Vaio laptop running XP Pro is wirelessly connected to the router, MacBook running OS-X is also wirelessly connected to the router. Router is MAC address filtered and running WAP-PSK encryption. All computers have perfect connections, excellent internet response. All computers allow file and printer sharing.

The desktop can see both laptops in "My network PLACES" and PASSES data to and from them. The Sony Vaio can see the MacBook in "My network places" and the MacBook can see the Sony Vaio and data can pass between them. But neither laptop can see the desktop and thus can't initiate data transfers to the desktop.

It's not really critical as I tend to use the desktop as the "master" and pass data out to the other two as needed, I would just like to get it all working properly so that I can access any of the data from any computer. I would also like to use "Remote Desktop" but can't at the moment. I've been round the network configuration so many times that I wonder if I might have missed something somewhere. I even think I would welcome a way to cancel out all the network, wipe the networking slate clean as it were and start over again.

Any ideas anyone ?Wow?!
Sharing files with a Apple and a Windows?
Man I didn't think that was possible.
How did you do that??

Jonas One word...
Samba

It comes standard on Mac OS X (I think) and many Linux distros.
Of course the Macbook could also be running XP .

ringbinder have you checked if a firewall on one of the computers are blocking file sharing?Jonas, I didn't do anything except add each machine as a "Network Place" and the Mac can see the whole directory structure and content of the Win machines (at least, only the Sony at the moment although it used to see the desktop as well, hence the current problem). And the Win machines can also see the directory structure and contents of the Mac.
Deerpark, I didn't use Samba and the MacBook is not running XP, just plain OS-X.

Further on my problem though, all firewalls are set to allow file and printer sharing. In fact I was using PC Tools Firewall Plus on the desktop but I've just disabled it and gone back to the Win Firewall just to make sure that wasn't screwing things up. No change.
From the desktop, when I "View Workgroup Computers", it lists only the Sony Vaio, not the Mac and not itself, even though in "My Network Places" I can see both Sony and Mac and can access all their files and synchronise whatever data I want.
From the Sony, when I "View Workgroup Computers", it lists only itself and in "My Network Places" it lists only its own shares (this is not quite what I reported the other day).
On the MacBook, in the Network, it lists the workgroup and the Sony Vaio in that workgroup and I can OPEN the Sony as a server and access all its files. The Desktop is not listed.
It seems so confusing that I'm wondering now if I can scrap all the network and workgroups and start again with a clean slate. Is there a way to do that ?
Thanks for listening to all this.
JR
First off, do all of your computers inside the network have internal static IP's?

I had this same issue (fairly similar that is) with my laptop when I first got it. I believe it has a lot to do with the wireless connections. Go around and assign static IP's to everything. Then, maybe set up your router to speak directly to the IP's (can't remember what this process is called and to lazy to look). I remember after doing most of that it solved my problems. If I think of anything else I did, I'll let you know. One of those computers becomes the "network master browser" (this happens in every "windows" network). It could take up to 40 minutes to initialize right the network "database". Also, it should run just fine, but it seems it does not.
If you disable the firewalls, are you able to see all computers? Disable firewalls just for testing.

For remote desktop problem I recommend you RealVNC.

The static IPs don't have anything to do with the problem. It does not matter if there are static or dynamic IPs.Thanks for all the useful tips. I think it is solved now. I was running PCTools Firewall Plus on the desktop machine (a recommendation I had from this forum some time ago) even though I had it set to allow file and printer sharing and I was pretty sure it wasn't impeding the network. At your suggestion Viking, I disabled it and Voila! the desktop appeared in the "workgroup computers" list and all the network was working fine.
That was last night. This morning, same problem, even though I had deleted the Start-Up entry for PCTools Firewall Plus and Firewall Plus had not started.
So now I've completely uninstalled Firewall Plus, never to be used again, and reverted to the simple Windows Firewall and the network is working properly again (even the PC/Mac connection Jonas). I've re-booted and all seems well, let's HOPE that is the end of it.
Many thanks for all who offered help and advice.

Solve : Connecting 2 far away Computers?

Answer»

Hi im just wondering can u connect 2 pc's TOGETHER that are far AWAY with different ISP's and make them look like they are on a router or lan?

Im trying to trick this program into thinking my friend's pc is on my network or my pc is on his, but i cant figure out how i can possibly do that. Any ideas?

We r both using windows XP with all updatesYou would have to set up a VPN connection.
Here is how to do it:
Start -> connect to -> show all connections -> go to file and click new connection.
Just follow the steps* and you will be GOOD to go.
NOTE: Make sure that both firewalls allow VPN connections.
NOTE2: Make sure that you're router allows it too.

Jonas

*1) Click next
2) Click connect to the network at my workplace. Click Next
3) Click Virtual Private network connection. Click Next
4) fill in what they ask and finally click finish.
ty Jonas,

But im just wondering, what do u mean allow my router allows it, do u mean like have my friend's ip on the virtual server list or something?Well that depens on your router settings.
Witch router do you have?
And what router does he have?
If I was you I would try fist witout changing.(Chances are small)

Jonas I got a dlink 604, hes got a ....linksys? lol not sure, but i will do the setup first without changing anything, then adjust to fit the need

Thanks alot man, and praise be to YevonIt's still not clear what you are trying to accomplish and why...post more details.

And who the heck is Yevon anyways ? ?Hamachi (google it)

Both of you must have it, then one of you creates a room and you join it and you basically have your own private secure lan. =)

Question - Just wondering, how far away is "far away". Like United States and Iraq?

*I believe Yevon is a Religion that believe sin the ending of the world? Why don't you give the whole solution?

Jonas Because I have a concious MIND of the current state of todays world.

Solve : d link dwa 547 desktop adapter?

Answer»

I recently bought a d link router dir 655, set it up on my main pc and then went on to install two 547 cards into my childrens pc's. I followed the instructions to the letter on the install guide. My SONS shows the card working though it doesn't connect to the internet, my daughters just freezes. I contacted d link and they sent me back new install instructions, and not for the first TIME in my life was I surprised to see that they differ wildly from the ones supplied with the product. I won't rant on about that bit....
My problem is how do I get rid of all traces of the ethernet CONTROLLERS as I need to install the drivers first but the computer keeps recognizing the ethernet controller even though I have uninstalled it and TRIED system RESTORE ,
many thanks IanUninstall the NIC's / shut down the system / remove the NIC's / reboot / shut down again. Reinstall the NIC's / reinstall the software.

BTW - do you install the software before or after the NIC?

Solve : VONAGE / ROUTER PROBLEM?

Answer»

I have a NETGEAR WGR614v4 wireless router. It has worked flawlessls for 2 years prior to connecting the VONAGE modem. SINCE ADDING the VONAGE modem, it stops responding around once or twice a week. Are there settings I can change to prevent this?Did you try to UPDATE the firmware?
What OS do you have?
How many computers usually connect to that router?

Jonas Jonas,
THANKS for the reply.
I will try the firmware update.
The OS is XP PRO and I have the VONAGE modem and (2) computers connected.
Any difference between which plug socket I use for which?
Let me know if you can.
Regards,
AndyYou should go from your modem to your router and the to both computers.
There isn't any difference between the sockets of the router.

Solve : Not able to acess certin web sites.?

Answer»

I am currently staying at my fathers house and when I'm on his WIRELESS NETWORK I cannot seem to go to "myspace.com" or "ijji.com". They just keep the loading bar there forever. When I use the AOL browser I can view both pages and I find that interesting. But when I use IE, fire fox, flock, etc nothing happens. My father has a few sites he cant view aswell from his laptop. He didn't change anything in the network settings recently. Were both running Windows XP. When I'm at my mother house (same computer) I can view these sites perfectly FINE ( I'm connected to the computer by wire there though not wireless like at my dads ). No idea what the problem could possibly be any help would be very nice. oh and we have tried to unplug then plug in the router and stuff. No clue.

Try going to internet options - content and seeing if any KEYWORDS are blocked there.go to your internet options > security

and change your internet security to low. then try and access those webpages.

Solve : ipconfig error HELP!?

Answer»

My wireless coinnection stopped working. I have a Compaq Pressario laptop. when I plug in an ethernet CABLE to the router, it still does not work, however it does work with my other laptop. I am fairly confident it is not a router or modem issue.. when I spoke with my ISP SUPPORT, they had me run ipconfig command... it comes back with "an internal error occured... unable to query host name. he also had my try ping and it didn't work - he said something is corrupt... I'm not sure what to do next.

both my ethernet and wireless connectors appear OK in the device manager.

one other note - I have a DLINK DI-514 wireless router. I tried looking at the settings. the instructions SAY to type "http://192.168.0.1" in my browser and hit go - but when I do that nothing happens.

any advise is greatly appreciated!
more info would be helpful.
what's your os?
what service pack?
have you tried RESETTING your router?
has it occured to you that maybe the ethernet port in one of your laptops is faulty?

Solve : Can connect to router, can't access internet.?

Answer»

I recently switched to DSL from Cable and have had problems with my wireless router since then. The router shows up on the laptops, and they can connect to it with a good or excellent signal strength. However, when I try to access the internet with any program it says I am not connected; unable to display page on browsers, no connection on games.

When I look at the STATUS of the connection it will show many packets SENT and very few received (about 5 or 6 times as many). I've tried resetting both the modem and the router several times, and it hasn't given any results.Go into the connections properties and set the DHCP server and the gateway to routers IP address. The properties of the router or the connection on the wireless computer?

Also, a desktop that is wired to the router can connect fine to the internet. Are you sure your laptops are connecting to your network(router)? (and not a neighbour's?) Do you use the right SSID?
Can you access the desktop from the laptops? (do you have local network connectivity?)
2k_dummy told you about the tcp/ip properties of the wireless connection on the computer. How do you:

"set the DHCP server and the gateway to routers IP address."

I have been hunting for a long time to no avail, I really think this is my problem, having same problem as this guy.

thanksDouble click "My computer", right click on "My network places" -> Properties -> right click on your network connection->Properties -> Internet Protocol -> Properties
and you should use: "Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". The router should respond to your computer demands.

To check if it works:
Start->Run-> ipconfig /all and if the IP is not in range 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.254 then you have a dhcp server in your local network, and that server works. Well, we have to find if it is a LEGITIMATE dhcp server... But after you tell us what response you get from the COMMAND:
ipconfig /all
