Solve : Symantic pcAnywhere yellow cable?

Answer»

I acquired a Symantic pcAnywhere yellow cable many YEARS ago. I would like to communicate between two pcs using XP's DCC facility. Can I use this yellow cable for printer port to printer port connection?
I did a pinout check and it doesn't look like the standard PARALLEL port cable pinout.
What can I use this cable for?

Thanks
That would be HORRENDOUSLY slow.  If you have ethernet ports, a crossover cable would be a thousand (or more) times faster.  Failing that, you COULD pick up a PC-to-PC USB cable, which would also be fairly quick.

Solve : Web links?

Answer»

Good Day,  Sorry to bother everyone but I haven't seen my problem in the past topics and was wondering if anyone had ever encountered it before. I have a cable internet connection and wanted to share it between our two computers.  I aquired a Netgear WGR614v4 Wireless Router with a WG111 Wireless USB Adapter. I connected my newer computer (HP Pavillion, AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 2.19 Ghz, running XP Home svc. pk. 2) directly into the Netgear router and attached the Wireless USB to my older computer (running Windows Me).  After running all the setups and doing the re-boots, I got connectivity on both computers with apparently no problems.

But, after trying to access certain web sites and clicking on buttons, I found that the base computer (the HP directly connected to the router) would not load those pages.  There is no specific pattern.  I can load my Comcast News page, but when I click on the link buttons, nothing happens. The same with my banking sites, shopping sites, etc. Even when I tried to register at this site, I had to use a different computer to do so.

Strangely, on the older computer with the wireless USB connection, I can access anything.  When I disconnect the router and run a straight internet connection to the HP computer, there is no access problem. I double checked the router, network and IE 7 settings, tried disabling the firewall and anti-virus but still encoutered the same problem.

There is probably something simple that I am overlooking but I am pounding my head against my monitor trying to figure it out.  I've talked with "Netgear" and the MS people, but each expert blames the other EQUIPMENT without defining the problem. I am not a networking guru, but I am fairly savy with computers.  Has anyone encountered this problem before?IE7 might be the problem (some more MS junk). Try a different browser and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.  I did try that, using Firefox and Opera but I still get the same results.  Sorry I didn't mention that in my original email (I upgraded to IE 7 hoping that might solve it, but no change there either).  Do you think it could be the router?  That was one of my guesses, but I can't figure out why the wireless would work, but not the direct connection to the router.Could you give us the output of ipconfig /all for both computers?DEAR Sir, thank you for the reply.  That's a lot of information so here goes.

Lord, I hope I didn't make any mistakes, that's a lot of numbers.....

That's brilliant, thank you.  The good news is that your configuration appears to be correct.  The bad news is that it doesn't work...

This cable modem - is there an ethernet connection from the cable modem to the router?  What firewalls are involved?Again, thank you for wading through all that data.  My internet connection is as follows:

Cable connection to the cable modem (provided by Comcast, Arris model #TM402P/110). RJ45 cable from the modem to the Netgear router, RJ45 cable from the router to the Ethernet card on the HP Computer.

When I run without the router (as I am now), it's just a RJ45 cable from the modem directly to the ethernet card.

The modem does have a USB connection, but of course there isn't one on the router.

As for firewalls, I use Norton Internet SECURITY on the HP computer for my firewall, and disable Window XP Firewall. I have tried disabling the Norton Internet Security but it did not correct the connectivity problem.

On the older computer I use Zone Alarm (free version).Hello?Sorry - I've been offline for a couple of days.

All right, lets drill down to some specific problems.  Can you give me a link to a page where you are experiencing problems?  Off the top of my head it sounds like it might be a problem with SSL-secured sites, but lets look at this more closely.

Ta!Thank you for your response,

I will have to go off-line and reconnect the offending router later, but some sites immediately come to mind:

Going to www.comcast.net (my home page), it will not allow me to open up the scrolling "flash" links in the headlines section of the screen (thing like news, videos, sport in the center, top area)

Another problem I found is when going to www.demonoid.com (a bit torrent site) it will allow me to click on the torrent section and bring that up.  But when I enter a search and click on the "apply filters" button, nothing happens.

I can go to www.amazon.com and enter information to search, but when I hit the "search" button, nothing happens.

Lastly when going to my banking site, www.navyfcu.org, I can successfully log in, view accounts and other things.  But when I went to transfer fund and clicked the "submit" button, again nothing happened.

I can usually open up most sites that I go to. It's when I'm clcking buttons (Search, apply, submit, etc) is when it doesn't connect.
This does not appear to be connected to your hardware problems - it may just be coincidental.  The first problem would probably be resolved by downloading the LATEST version of the Flash plugin from Adobe.

Check that you don't have javascript disabled, and that your internet security settings aren't unnecessarily restrictive.Dear Sir,

Well, I checked everything.  Java is set up and enabled. I double-checked my version of Adobe Flash, and my Internet Security is set to Medium.

Now, I can't even get the network to connect.  The Network Settings say I have a Local Connection but the Network is disabled and I can connect on any computer through the router.

Frankly, I'm ready to pick up an axe and destroy this router.  If I were to go out and get a different wireless network system, is there any vendor you would recommend?  Obviously someone with a better costumer service department than Netgear. I need something which is not going to cause my brain to hemorrage, and my ears to bleed.Oops, typo in that second paragraph.

What I meant was I "Cannot" connect to the internet through the router on either of my computers.  Completely deadsville.Try Linksys or Xyxel.  I wonder if anyone else could get that Netgear working...  Maybe it's fragged.

Solve : Braindead Newbie wanting to connect two 'pute's?

Answer»

Hi all, as my heading says I want to connect my OLD computer running Me  to my new one running Xp in order to swop all my files, pictures etc.I have them set up next to each other so a ?simple? cable connection would surely be the EASIEST option.I have tried connecting via the "printer" port (DB25) & also an ethernet cable using the network setup wizard for both, to no avail, would a USB cable work?Your best bet would be to purchase a router or you can do it the cheap way and get a crossover ethernet cable not straight through. Then you need to create a new network and enable file and printer sharing. What he said.

You might like to read the Networking FAQ, to have more networking mysteries unravelled.  See the link in my signature.Hi Guys, thanks very much for the advice.I'll go & buy the cable tomorrow.I only want a temporary connection to put all my pictures, favourites etc on to the new computer. Then I'll wipe the old one & pass it on.Many thanks once again.A USB thumbdrive would work nicely for this...

patio.  8-)Sorry folks, back again. Not having much luck I'm afraid.I have tried all variations in setting up this connection between my 2 'pute's.I have finally got a shared internet connection using the ethernet crossover cable but still no recognition of either pute by the other!
Rob,I followed the INSTRUCTIONS in your link to the letter,I followed the set up wizard from the me pute & then the xp one.Still nothing, what am I doing wrong?
Could it be anything to do with one running me & the other xp?Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  :-/ Quote

Could it be anything to do with one running me & the other xp?Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This should not be an issue...did you enable file and print sharing ? ?

Are both machines showing up in the workgroup ? ?

patio.   8-)Hi Patio, sorry to have taken so long.Just checking what you mentioned, yes file & print sharing is on.
No both machines aren't showing in workgroup.I named old pute (me) LINDA & new pute (xp) GRAHAM.
LINDA shows up in mshome on LINDA but GRAHAM doesn't.
"my documents on LINDA "and "shared documents on GRAHAM" shows on GRAHAM.When I click my documents on LINDA,an error message appears saying it is not accessible.Network path not found.
However a message also comes up on LINDA from my firewall (Sygate) that an application named Win 32 Kernel core component (file name Kernel 32 dll has been blocked.
So it looks like a firewall problem.I will investigate & get back again!Let us know...For the record, the ports you need to open on your LAN for file and print sharing are 137-139 and 1512.  (All TCP.)Well, I've managed to get the connection but with restrictions.I can access "My documents" on Linda from Graham but that seems about it.So anything I want to transfer has first to go to My Documents on Linda then I can transfer from there to My Documents on Graham. The main bugbear was when I clicked to open "My Documents on Linda" I was asked for a password, but I knew I hadn't set a password!Anyway I could see it was a 6 CHARACTER word so I tried all of my 6 character ones to no avail. Then I saw on Lindas screen the network was showing mshome,so I punched that in & hey PRESTO it worked!
So,thanks to everyone who has helped/offered help.I really don't know how I did it but I got there in the end.I certainly would have taken a lot longer without you guys help.Much appreciated,CheersCheers 8-) now that wasn't so bad, now was it.

Solve : cannot display pages?

Answer»

i need help. (oviously) when i try to go on myspace i always get the page cannot be displayed but funny thing is its only on myspace. everyother page works just fine its really ANNOYING i was wandering if anyone knoes what is wrong? id love help lol..Perhaps MySpace has been blocked by whomever controls your internet access?nope, coz its me that controls ITYOU would need to explain you network setup better for a real solid answer.

You may check you "HOSTS" file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) and make sure that some SPYWARE PROGRAM hasn't messed with it. (should be virtually blank - should be a 127.0.0.1 address at the bottom.)it came up with this -

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

# For example:

#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

Solve : another wireless problem!?

Answer»

Hi, I have a Dell Dimension 3000 (I know, it's a piece of crap!) with a D-Link Airplus DWL- 120 wireless adapter. I was connected to USB port #2, on the front of the PUTER. I want to move it to the back , port #3, but when I do the puter doesn't recognize it and I get a "wireless adapter not connected message, but my signal strength indicator has full bars or "excellent signal" message.
What am I doing wrong???Does any other USB hardware work in that port?Yes all the ports work for other devices, but no matter which port I PLUG the wireless into I get no joy! It only works in port #2.
I guess the SIMPLE answer would be to keep it in port 2, but I need those front ports for other things LIKE my mp3 player and such. When it's plugged into port 2, remove it via device manager.  Then unplug it and reinstall it WHEREVER you need.

Solve : request for finding the gateway?

Answer» hi FRIENDS,
can anybody tell me about how to find the gateway NUMBER of main server from the client computer in  a LOCAL area network.
thanks
By "gateway number" I assume that you are trying to determine the gateway IP ADDRESS for the subnet that your computer resides on.

For Win2k/XP/NT, you run "ipconfig /all" in a command prompt. Win 9x uses "winipcfg".

Quote
Win 9x uses "winipcfg".
9x has both ipconfig and winipcfg. The former is used from the command prompt and the latter from WINDOWS start/run.

Solve : Switching a Cable Modem between Mac and PC??

Answer»

Hey all, I've got a simple (I hope) problem. I'm currently running a Dell dimension 2100 hooked up to a Toshiba pcx2500 cable modem through a USB cable, and that setup works fine. But what I'd like to do, is connect that same pcx2500 to a new Apple Macbook  through (I assume) Ethernet. My questions are:

A) Do you think this is possible, or do most modems USUALLY like to see only one platform/style of connection

B) If my goal is only to be able to use internet on these two computers, is there any better way to SET this up?

REMEMBER, I don't need the 'net to work simultaneously on each comp, just one at a time. Thanks for any help/ideas you've got.

AlexYou need to get yourself onto the support section of Toshiba's website and see if they provide a Mac driver for that modem.  If not, you're out of luck. Why not just get a router. As long as both machines can acquire an IP from the router, the router will handle the internet access through the modem. You'll need the proper NIC drivers for each OS.how about just lugging the ethernet cable to the modem and then on which ever computer you want to be connected on internet right now, the easiest would be buying qa router.

Al968If both of your computers have a ethernet card, you should be able to use a cross-over ethernet cable between them and use WINDOW's Internet connection SHARING software to NAT the 2nd computer.

Most cable modems just pass a DHCP lease to the customers computer. It is very unlikely that the modem or the DHCP server will allow both computers to "think" they have the same address (if the modem just passes your computer's MAC [aka not he modem's MAC], your ISP may be dumb enough to allow multiple leases).

If you are going with the router option, get the Linksys WRT54G or simular router so you can use a wired or wireless connection (I've had issues with the WRGxxx models). The Belkin PCI and PCMCIA cards are very dependable and low cost (walmart & bestbuy).A router solves all of this and more. Think "hardware firewall".

I can't give you specific advice.
But I see that no ONE else has had a chance to reply to you yet.    I do have an idea of what I would do in the meantime,  if I were you.

Maybe you already have....

Check out:
http://www.portforward.com/
That's the main page.

http://portforward.com/routers.htm
That's the list of routers that they have more pages on.
# DG834G   is on it.     It is a link that TAKES you to:

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/DG834G/DG834Gindex.htm

Part of what it says there is:
"Welcome to our guide list for the Netgear DG834G. Please select the program you are forwarding ports for from the list below"

Azureus is on that list.
Click it and it takes you to ......    you get the idea.

Reading that stuff might be a good start towards getting it set up correctly.
There are step-by-step instructions there, with pictures.

Let us know if that helped.

Solve : Network Inventory?

Answer»

I'm trying to FIND a nice, fairly cheap Network Inventory program to use on my network so that I may find tons of information, including (this is a must), but not limited to by no means:

-Operating System
-OS License Key
-Computer Name
-Computer Owner

-Mother Board Make & Manufacturer
-Memory Type
-Memory Slots (Particularly how many occupied, but preferably how many free as well)
-Processor Make, Manufacture, and Speed
-Graphics Card Make & Manufacture
-Sound Card Make & Manufacture

-HDD and other IDE components (CD Roms, DVD, etc...)

-All Installed Programs & their License Numbers

OPTIONAL, but would be great:
The actual Computer Make & Model

I know the price can be PRETTY hefty but definitely nothing over a thousand dollars.  I found a program called Remote System Information that can do most of this for about $250 and a range like that or EVEN a little more will be fine.  The only thing about Remote System Information is that it will not  tell me the Memory Type & the Memory Slot Information.

I did google this and am about GOOGLED out over it.. if anyone wants to give it a try or knows anything, please let me know.  Thanks!
--MikeCheck out >Spiceworks<.  For free software, it is absolutely phenomenal.

Other free software that may interest you:

>Advanced Remote INFO< (if you research this tool on the internet, don't be put off by the warnings about this program's abilities - in the hands of a network administrator, this is an excellent tool)

Who needs commercial programs?!
When I get back to work today I'll give those a try.

Thanks alot!!!

Solve : MS Office and My Business Network?

Answer»

I had absolutely no idea where to place this so please don't flame me if I'm wrong.

I am just got employed at probably the most disorganized company when it comes to computers than EVER.  I'm doing everything I can to get them set up and one of these items on the agenda is to set up a system like this:

I WANT to install the MS Office 2003 Professional files onto the network and allow every computer on there to access it.  Then I want to have this script automatically check and make sure I have enough licenses to do this.  I already have 50 Office CDs with authenticated licenses, but I'll want to put them all into this little system and then have room to grow in the future.

Any ideas?

THANKS!
--Mike
Wouldn't it be easier to create a script to install MS Office 2003 on all 50 machines and then put the serial number on each one of them ??

Al968There's a WAY to do some kind of Active Directory that made it real simple to add new computers to the network, make updates, etc...

Solve : Do I need a Switch, managed switch or hub??

Answer»

I'm trying to speed up the schools network where my WIFE teaches. I want to replace the 16 port hub with a switch. The treasurer told me that the switches I see for prices around $70 are not true switches, that a real switch is around $300 and there a MANAGED switch, these cheap switches are just fancy hubs.
My question on this is:
Are the cheap switches no better than a hub?

I was also told that a network is no faster than the SLOWEST computer on it. My argument is that with a switch, each computer can RUN at it's max speed because other computers won't slow it down.
Question:
With a 10/100 switch, can a slower computer (maybe one with a 10mbps NIC card) slow down another computer (one with a 100mbps NIC card)?>I'm trying to speed up the schools network where my wife teaches. I want to replace the 16 port hub with a switch. The treasurer told me that the switches I see >for >prices around $70 are not true switches, that a real switch is around $300 and there a managed switch, these cheap switches are just fancy hubs.
>My question on this is:
>Are the cheap switches no better than a hub?

A hub will always send a packet out all of it ports (where all computers hear what one speaker is saying). A switch will only send packets out the port it "knows" the destination computer resides. The true question about speeding up their network is the number of computers on the switch. If it is just 1 hub, a cheap switch will help to a degree. If there are a lot of computers talking through the hub (or multiple hubs chained together), a managed switch has greater memory for increased load.

The managed switches (Ex: Cisco Catalyst) will also learn each computers addressing and only send packets out 1 port. What they really do is allow you to create VLANs or multiple private LANs in 1 switch. (divide accounting's network from OPERATION's).

The ture question is the amount of traffic. If it is constant and heavy, the managed switch is worth the investment for a large school.

>I was also told that a network is no faster than the slowest computer on it. My argument is that with a switch, each computer can run at it's max speed because other >computers won't slow it down.
>Question:
>With a 10/100 switch, can a slower computer (maybe one with a 10mbps NIC card) slow down another computer (one with a 100mbps NIC card)?

The answer is no. A switch will allow full duplex communication. Hubs are Half duplex where the message (even hearing your own) is sent out all of the ports.Thank you, that's exactly what I was saying. I'm emailing your post and other of my findings to the treasurer. Even though these cheap switches are not managed, they'll still perform better than the hub.

The main thing is, right now we go from the bypass DSL modem to a router to a 16 port hub. The 16 port hub has a 16 port switch, a 24 port switch and 2 4 port switches as well as 10 computers and a printer/copy machine all connected to it. To have a hub somewhere else in the network would be fine, but not as the first device after the router.

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it.  [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Solve : Remote Desktop Help...?

Answer»

I've checked out numerous threads and none have helped so far. Basically, I'm running a PC on Windows XP Professional, and wish to access it via the network on my laptop, running Windows XP Home.

The checkbox for allowing remote desktopping is ticked on the PC, and all firewalls are disabled. Both computers can access each other's files via the network, so there's no problems there. I know the IP address of the PC too.

So I run Remote Desktop Connection on the laptop, and enter the IP. A while passes and then I get an error message:
"The client could not connect to the remote computer.
Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection
Please try connecting again later. If the PROBLEM continues to occur, contact your administrator"

Note that instead of entering an IP on Remote Desktop Connection, I could select and my network appears in a new window. Clicking on the + sign next to it though, brings up the following error message: The NETWORK domain/workgroup does not contain any Terminal servers."

And also note, that if I enter most IP addresses in the RDC box, the same amount of time passes, and I get the same error message I get when I enter the right IP address. I tried entering the IP address in the computer that I'm trying to connect to, and it told me I was already logged into that machine, so it's definitely the CORRECT IP.

So, I tried entering the users that are allowed, by going to the Remote tab in System Information, and clicking the Users button. I assume that I would have to allow my User on the Laptop to be able to access the PC via Remote Desktop, but I was only able to select users on the PC to be allowed. There is a box that lets you select the LOCATION of the User, but clicking on it only brings up a windows which allows you to select a location for the user you want to select, and only the PC appears. I cannot see any other computers on the network in the window, and therefore cannot select users from any other computers to be allowed to access the PC via RDC.

I am the Administrator on both machines, and none have a Firewall on them. Any help on getting this working would be much appreciated...

And also, I'm not sure how to forward ports, which has been suggested. My computer knowledge is limited, so could you be as specific as possible with help! Thanks  Foruminister...... Quote

You will be able to file share if both machines are configured to do so , however you cannot access the desktop remotely.

[highlight]The Remote Desktop feature is not available in Windows XP Home Edition. However, a computer running Windows XP Home Edition, or any version since Windows 95, can use the client software and Internet access to remotely control a computer that runs Windows XP Professional with Remote Desktop enabled. Hope this answers your question .

Also remember that you can only RDP to an XP Pro machine that has passwords set.

If you want to look at another option, go to the software FAQ (link is in my signature) and look up ULTRAVNC. Quote

I already did those steps. As you saw, I have Windows XP Home on the machine I want to use to access the one running Windows XP Professional. This should work, and after REINSTALLING SP2 on the PC, I now hit connect and am promptly hit with the message "The remote computer has ended the connection".

I have tried numerous things suggested on the internet (such as changing termsrv.dll to its original file, and messing around with a few registry settings, but I still get the message....You can also try RealVNC, a remote desktop connection program.UltraVNC is better, hence my earlier post.

Hello everyone,
OK, here's the SITUATION, I have two computers, the first ONE is running win xp and can access the intenet. The second computer is running win 98 and cannot access the internet due to only having connection to the computer with win xp. Now my QUESTION is this, Is it possible to access the internet from the same line just by discoonecting the internet from the computer that has win xp which has my ISP provider to the computer with win 98 which has internet explorer, and if so, how would I go about doing so.
Thanks for any helpAre you on cable, DSL or dial-up? That and other PERTINENT details are required.I am assuming you use some sort of broadband from this...

Just use a router or a hub. There is also another alternative (which is cheaper but I wouldn't recommend it), you could have to network adapters in one of your computers and only one in the other computer. You will need a "crossover" ethernet cable to do this not a "straight through" ethernet cable. You have the computer that has the 2 network adapters connected directly to the internet and the other computer must be plugged into the second network adapter.

Solve : Can't add a printer?

Answer»

Windows 2000 Pro SP4 on 3 pc's / 1 XP Home [doesn't have the problem] / peer-to-peer network / AVG / Adaware / no software firewalls.

Shared HP 8000 on W2KP workstation with everyone having permissions to print.  Was able to add the HP to the XP box but none of the W2kP boxes can add it.  Error message: "Could not connect to the printer.  ACCESS is denied".

Ideas  :-?

Alan <><  Have you given PERMISSION to the "Everyone" user?HEY Rob...

Yeah, that's the first thing I checked.  Even added the particular user on the machine with the printer to the sharing permissions and gave her full control. I think I'll try removing/recreating her profile from the W2kP machine that has the printer.

I have to GO back TODAY to 'tidy-up' their office.  I'll post back with what happens.

Alan <><  Ask Fed - he's the W2K fanatic.  Problem solved:  added the Authenticated User to the printer permissions.  Woo-hoo

Solve : LAN between XPSP2 and Win Me?

Answer»

Salam all,

I have a LAN in the house hooking two COMPUTERS..one has XPSP2 and the other has Win Me .. the TROUBLE i am having is that eveytime i connect between the two, a message pops up on the PC that has XP INSTALLED on it telling me that "The connection between the two computers is limited or "impossible"(am not sure though about the quoted word as the system's language is not english. The strange thing is that i am capable of accessing Win Me from XP but not vice versa.I have XP's firewall disabled for this connection.Anyone can help??

both PC's have Realtek RTL9139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC as their network adapter.

Thanks and Merry Chrsitmas... WinME cannot understand or read NTFS file systems, which is probably what the XP machine is loaded with. You can check if not sure by selecting a drive and right clicking and choosing Properties on the XP box.  NT-based machines don't expose NTFS directly over NetBIOS.  You should still be able to access file shares normally.

First things to check are that both machines are in the same workgroup and have static IPs in the same subnet.  Read the networking FAQ (link in my signature) for more information. Thanks Rob for your very helpful information about the Network connections..It solved the problem. The connection is normal now(no messages appear when the two PC's are connected).

Though am having a trouble with accessing shared drivers of the XP PC.Win Me didn't show the drivers when I opened "My Network Places".

what I did was to go to LAN Properties in XP and to change IP address manually to 192.168.1.1 with 255.255.255.0 as subnet.

On Win Me,I changed the IP to 192.168.1.2 (same subnet) ,then added 192.168.1.1 to DNS and Gateway.at this point, the message that used to appear on XP disappeared but I couldn't see any shared drivers on Win Me.I was only able to see Shared Folders. Is there anyway to solve it?

Just another little question,Win Me is asking me whenever i START or restart the PC to enter the username name,it is kinda useless since only one person uses this PC,this happened after i did the above changes? Is there anyway to stop it from asking me everytime?

thx

note:XP's drivers am sharing are in FAT32 FORMAT.

Solve : How to use two-way line across town??

Answer»

Hi,

we have choice to use "military" two-ways metallic line, about 1 km long, with impedance cca 45 ohm/500m, to connect in our network (as compensation wi-fi line across town). Does anybody know some xDSL, VDSL or homeplug devices, which make possible connection about 10 Mb/s (and HIGHER - i know im very courageous) with this distance? Anybody have some experiences with it? Some tips (repeater etc.)?

Thank you.Sorry - I think you need a specialist electronics/networking forum.  I haven't a clue.  Anyone else? No, this is not within the focus of this forum, although a few of the 16 year olds here may BS you into thinking they know something about it.  In case you are still checking on this ....   I've created LAN extensions with Copperlink, but not WiFi. For about $40 a month you can buy a line pair from your telephone company and put together a private DSL type connection ( LAN Bridge ) with SPEEDS up to around 16.67mbps, but the maximum distance I believe is 35,000 FEET.

* Also Com sync speed drops with distance. Its a SOLID fast connection speed most of the distance, then it drops off as you start getting past 2 to 3 miles or so on regular single pair copper telephone wire..

I have 4 sets of these to bridge all our business locations together, Much cheaper than T1.

http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDetail?Sku=429271

Manual for all specs on this device : http://www.patton.com/manuals/2157_2156-a.pdf

They also have shorter distance Extenders that can communicate at 16.67Mbps at : http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDetail?Sku=466856

*** For a reliable fast connection that is secure, I'd go with Copperlink Extenders!!  thank you very much, it seems very interesting, but im afraid of price 899 usd is too high for us (citizens group about 50 persons)... but its good know it.You laid three miles of cable, Dave?  Do you live in the desert?!  Wouldn't creating a fiber line that runs across town work ??
Plus I don't think its too expensive

Solve : Problem after I installed a Wireless Card?

Answer»

I installed a wireless card on my friends mothers computer. It was a D Link X Treme Wireless Adapter. After I installed the network card the computer would boot to the Windows XP boot screen then reboot, it only boots into safe mode. Anyone have any idea what this could be?

The computer is a GATEWAY 825GM it has a gig of RAM, a 250 gig HDD, and ATI Radeon Graphics Card.

Any help to fix this would be greatly appreciated.Dodgy drivers.  Uninstall them, then visit the manufacturer's website for the latest updates.Thank you, I'll give it a try and see what happens. It was bad drivers, they were installed when the computer was ORIGINALLY made. I PUT a fresh COPY of Windows and re downloaded all the drivers off Gateways site. It works just fine now. Thank you.Great.  Glad your problem is resolved; thanks for posting back.

Solve : Wireless print server disrupting internet?

Answer»

I ran into a problem that I've never seen before.  The wireless print server WOULD boot the USER off of the internet.

What I did do was ping the router to test CONNECTIVITY.  That was fine.  I reinstalled the wireless print server on both laptops and printed just fine and got internet connectivity stable.  I then pinged the print server and everything was ok.  I didn't have to manually CONFIGURE any IP addresses.  The print server configured itself to the network when I re-installed it.

I took an educated guess that the print server was trying to initially connect to a different network. Is that correct.  I also figured that power cycling the router then the print server would solve this problem in the future.

Thoughts?  It was a Netgear router and print server and two toshiba celeron M processors. How do you know that the print server was interfering with the internet?  What were the SYMPTOMS?

Generally print servers/network printers will configure themselves through DHCP, which should avoid network clashes.

Solve : My browser won't recognise a url...?

Answer»

Hi,

My browsers (ie & firefox) won't display a page if I type in a url or link from a page, but if i type the ip address in directly to the address bar it will go to the page??

I have pinged my isp and my dns servers and they respond fine. Similarly if I ping an ip address it responds but if i ping the url it won't.

I am using windows xp professional and ie6 and firefox (whatever the latest version is). I have a bt voyager broadband connection (not wireless).

I am sending this from a different computer, so if it takes me a while to respond then it is only because of the transit between the two.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give and please let me know if you require any other INFO (i'm sure you will )

BEST wishes

AntTry manually inserting your DNS server's IP address into your network settings.  The problem here is that the domain NAME is not resolving correctly to the IP address.  (Usually a DNS failure.)  The other cuplrit might be a corrupted or overloaded HOSTS file.

Solve : Xbox Live - Limited or no connectivity?

Answer»

Hey all. I've seen that a lot of people have had a similar problem to this in the past so sorry to bring this up..again.

Basically I used to connect my xbox 360 to my COMPUTER using a ethernet and it worked FINE. Then i got wireless so I then did it with that. Great. Eventually my wireless stopped WORKING so now im back with the ethernet - - - however it is not connecting properly (hence limited or no connectivity).

Now i think this has something to do with IPs as when i run the troubleshooter in the console it fails the IP Address test, and when I try and repair the LAN connection on my computer it wont get past Acquiring Network Address.

I was wondering if ANYONE knows what could be causing this and how to fix it?If you happen to know the IP settings of your router, we can help you to set up static IP addresses on your LAN, which usually fixes this kind of problem.

Solve : laptop holds wifi connection only 5 mins...?

Answer»

Hello there!

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop, running Windows xp home edition. Not too long ago, I re-installed windows on it and re-downloaded all the drivers. I am trying to get onto a wireless network at a hotel. It has an internal wifi card I believe, but I have also gotten a pc card from the hotel and downloaded the software for it. (I have used this wifi before, so I know I should work.)

I can get onto the internet just FINE for awhile, but after about 5 minutes, I lose signal. The network connections (2 little computers in right hand corner) will still say I am connected, but internet explorer says "Server not found." If I got to the properties of the wireless, it will tell me that many are recieved, but only a few, if any, sent. It does show an ip address.

I then have to re-start the computer. Once re-started, I can get on fine -for about 5 minutes- then same deal, it must be re-started.

I contacted the tech support, and they do not know what the problem is. They suggested I have a firewall, but I am positive I do not. (I un-installed the zone labs that was on there, just in case)

I have probably a little more than average computer knowledge (I have learned a lot by trial and error and plain experience) but am not good with all the terms, so please explain thoroughly.

I have tried the few tricks I know. I tried to repair/re-new the ip address, and that does not HELP. Also, I tried to update the drivers, and was told a better match cannot be found. I can't roll-back the drivers, probably because I just re-installed them with the fresh windows install. I doubt it is the drivers anyways, because I am using the hotels pc card. The device manager says the device is working properly. I also tried different areas of the hotel to try to get a stronger signal, still no go. Tech support told me there are others that are connected just fine.

Also, once I exit internet explorer to re-start it, I get an error message that reads,

ieexplore.exe application error:
the instruction at "0x00ec2bf2" referenced memory at "0x018d6680" memory could not be read.
click ok to terminate the program.

This message is new and gibberish to me, so does anyone know what this could mean?

Any ideas or SUGGESTIONS as to how to get the laptop to hold a signal is greatly appreciated!

Thank you, thank you, for your help!

Hmmm probably not a very good solution but try to use firefox web browser.  I have found it connects to sites alot easier than IE.  I am in a similar situation.  I recently moved to an apartment in town and I was trying to get on my neighbors wireless conenction that he said I could use but my signal isnt that good either and I usually get disconnected.  Other than that check your windows firewall that piece of junk gave me trouble when I tried to use my ftp so I just turned it off and use a better fw.Your connection problems sound like a hardware fault.  If you are sure about the existence of an internal wireless card, try removing the additional card, get the drivers for the internal card and use that instead. Are you sure this problem is from your laptop. you can check the wireless connectivity of router. sometimes it happens from router side.
If the problem is not from router, try to check it from other browser than internet explorer. also be confirm that your laptop is not infected with any VIRUS or spyware.

Solve : Trouble downloading...?

Answer»

Ever SINCE we WENT WIRELESS, I've been having an extremely DIFFICULT time using P2P Networking. I can't download anything from LimeWire and I have no idea what the problem is.

I can download directly from the internet with no problem...

My only guess is that something is in the way, like a firewall...thing is, as far as I know, I don't have one...If you have XP with SP2 you probably do - the Windows firewall, as well as a hardware firewall if you use a router. You can check on that.

If you were previously on dialup, you might have better LUCK just uninstalling and reinstalling the software.

I'll skip the speech about dangers of P2P downloading, but be careful.

Solve : New wireless router won't load web pages.?

Answer»

Hey all. THANKS for taking the time to read this..

Bascially here's my dilemma:

About a week ago my wireless was working fine with the internet, it was running at a good speed and i couldn't tell the DIFFERENCE in speed between using my wireless or my dial-up broadband modem.

I'm not sure what happened but SUDDENLY whilst I was on it, it disconnected and refused to reconnect (possibly a power surge i guess).

Anyway i went to the shop and traded it in for a new one which is a "D-Link Wireless G ADSL 2/2+ DSL-G624T" with a wireless dongle "D-Link DWL-G122". This connected to each other fine and I set it up with it registering an internet connection.

>>>>>> Thats the background: Heres the current problem. Whenever i try and load web pages it tries to, then after taking such a long time it times out (on some small web pages such as a google search it will load). Now i KNOW that the broadband is running at full speed as I tested it out by downloading a part of a file through "Steam" (CS Client) and that was running at around 58 kbps which is normal for my 512 kbps internet.

I was wondering why this is happening and what can be done to rectify the situiation as it means i basically can't surf the internet which as im sure you understand is driving me crazy.

Kind regards,
Matt

NB I just thought i'd add recently my Norton Internet Security started messing up so i tried to uninstall it but it sort of only partially did it. So i tried to reinstall over it and it wouldn't let me as it said that it was already installed. Now i was wondering if the fact that i have a weird corrupt version of this AV on my comp that it could be blocking my internet ( this happened between swapping in the routers and connecting the new one so it was perfect timing).Your AV is fragged.  See Norton's website for detailed instructions on how to remove their virus.  Try AVG, Antivir or Avast free virus scanners instead.Ok thanks my AV is SORTED but anyone got any ideas on my wireless?Try a system restore to before this problem occured.  If that doesn't work, try rolling back the wireless drivers (through the device manager).  If that doesn't work, try reinstalling the drivers.  If that doesn't work, try doing a naked rain dance.  If that doesn't work, try converting to Zorasterianism.  If that doesn't work, come back here for further suggestions.

hi, connected all the wires like it says in the book but do i connect the modem router to the LAN or the PHONE? because the light for the port  on the modem router isnt lighting up, then it says in the manual i have to type a http:// address which logs me onto the router but nothing happens

currently its plugged into the LAN, atleast i think, i KNOW that the old dail-up cable came out of that port, have broadband now but its a USB modem

this right port?

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i89/mike_3112/DSC00025.jpg?t=1167746284

see nothing happening on router

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i89/mike_3112/DSC00031.jpg?t=1167746317It may be the right port, it may not - the photo's pretty blurred.
You need a wire from the router to the phone line and one from the router to the PC.
The port on the router to connect to the PC should look the same as the one on the PC.
Hope this makes sense.yeh its all set up like that but its not connecting for some reasonIf this is a broadband USB modem, you would NORMALLY plug the "line" port into the data output of your ADSL filter (which in turn is plugged into your telephone socket).

Is this a modem or a modem router?  A make and model number would be helpful.

Solve : No Recognition?

Answer»

I am running Win98SE on a computer which is connected with a LAN to another.  I have had no problem with sending files back and forth, etc. I have just replaced the hard drive on the computer, and suddenly neither computer will recognize the other. I used Maxtor's MaxBlast to copy all the files from the old hard drive to the new one, and that's all I did. Everything works well except the networking.

Both computers recognize that the one with the new hard drive is there, and is part of the NETWORK, but, other than displaying the computer's name  (without any properties) nothing happens.

I don't understand what has caused the problem, and would appreciate any suggestions.

This has just happened, so I haven't done any of the normal things like disabling firewalls, and virus propgrams yet. I'll keep working at it, but I thought someone might be able to POINT me in the right direction.
TomDid you enable sharing on the machine with the new hard drive? You have to do that and reboot. Quote

Did you enable sharing on the machine with the new hard drive? You have to do that and reboot.

Sharing is enabled. It wasn't necessary to re-enable it, since MaxBlast made a complete copy of everything on the old hard drive, and put it on the new.

Incidentally, the computer has 2 hard drives. I did nothing with the 2nd one, and it isn't recognized by the network, either.

Fortunately for me, MaxBlast did not screw up anything. I'm now up and running. Apparently what happened was that a new name was ASSIGNED to each of the hard drives, and the old connections didn't work. I found out what the names for the drives were (Actually I just re-named them); then I went to the other computer and added a network place, using the new names. I mapped the drives, and all is well.

Sometimes, when you least expect it, things go right.

Solve : SSH?

Answer»

Hi,

I set up a ssh on one of my computers. My system setup is this: all my computers are on the same LAN, they all share the internet connection via a router. I registered a domain name with DynDNS which uses the ip address my isp assigned to me. On the internet, I can ssh to one of my computers, what do I need to do so that I can ssh to any computers on my LAN? Is it possible SINCE I only have one ip address from my isp?

B.Yes, there is a difference between outer IP and Local IP google it.Each one of your computer's have their own unique Local IP but, your router only has 1 outer IP and this is what the internet sees you as.Thanks for the reply.

There is no way to map the local ip to the external ip? And it also means I need to have different internet connection for each computer?

B.Are you running an SSH server on each of the different computers on the LAN?  If so, you can use your router's port mapping facility to send a different port to each different PC.

E.g.

External IP address: 80.74.134.12
Internal IP addresses: 192.168.23.10 to 192.168.23.15

SSH NORMALLY operates on port 22, so leave all the SSH servers set that way.

On the router, set it up so that:
incoming 80.74.134.12:1020 maps to 192.168.23.10:22
incoming 80.74.134.12:1021 maps to 192.168.23.11:22
incoming 80.74.134.12:1022 maps to 192.168.23.12:22
incoming 80.74.134.12:1023 maps to 192.168.23.13:22
incoming 80.74.134.12:1024 maps to 192.168.23.14:22
incoming 80.74.134.12:1025 maps to 192.168.23.15:22

Then, if you're using something LIKE PuTTY to connect to computer 192.168.23.13, you just tell it to go to IP address 80.74.134.12, port 1023.

Do you see what I mean?

The other way of doing it is to SSH into just the one PC, and then SSH to the other computers from there.  You only need one way in, after all. Thanks Rob, that's excatly what I want to do. so all I need is one DynDNS domain name. I will ry it out.

B.You got it.  Let us know how you get on?Hi,

I resurrected this question because I STILL can't find a solution to it.

Here is the set up. I have 4 PCs on the LAN, each has its own ip address. they are all connected to  a Linsys WRT54G router. I only have one external ip from COMCAST. What I like to do is to be able to ssh to a specific computer from a remote location. I have obtained an domain name from DynDNS. I can use this domain name to connect to one PC from a remote PC via the internet, but how can I specify which computer I want?

I tried to reconfigure the router so that it will forward the external ip to a specific internal ip but I screwed the router up the last time I tried. I am not sure what exactly I need to do. I guess I am not understanding the port mapping well. On this router it doesn't have port mapping but it does have one section come close to it called Advance Routing. I wonder if they mean the same thing? In case it helps, here is what the original routing table looks like.

I will appreciate any helps.

B.Nah, don't mess with the routing table.  What router is it?Hi,

It's a Linksys WRT54G router.

Right now, I can ssh to one computer on the ninternet, from that computer I can ssh to the other computer on the LAN.
There must be a prettier way to do this and it will be really nice if each computer on the LAN can have its own domain name. or something like this,

xyz.DynDNS.com [?] 192.168.1.101 --computer 1
xyz.DynDNS.com [?] 192.168.1.102 --computer 2
xyz.DynDNS.com [?] 192.168.1.103 --computer 3
...

Which means I need something to route the external ip to a particular internal ip. Is this called ip forwarding? ip routing? Can a router do that?

Solve : cable- modem for connection (comcast) ??

Answer»

Don't laugh !  I am done with my build and everything worked out great except, I cannot get my sons puter online. They have a cable connection at thier house and its connected to his ethernet cable INPUT on his MOBO. I cannot get an online connection ? Could it be that I forgot to get him a modem connected to his mobo on my build ?
I assumed his asus A8N-VM CSM had one, looks like it doesn't ?You don't need an internal modem for broadband. Are the proper drivers loaded for the NIC? Are they using a router? Have you tried using the connection wizard to set up a connection?Proper drivers for the NIC  << not real sure on that, its thru his asus mobo lan ethernet connection and it says we are connected at 100 mbps  but cannot connect?
I tried many times with connection wizard and it goes thru ok ? The IP address keeps changing though ?
I am getting  error 678 and error 711 ... ?

I tried pinging the IP  and all 4 come back just fine ?  no problems
In the DOS command area i did a ipconfig / renew and got this error MESSAGE-
"  adapter local area connector 2 is not enabled for Dhcp " ?

" operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissable for this operation"     Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I have to leave back to New England tomorrow at noon !

Scott   :-/Is TCP/IP set for static or dymanic?  If static, change to dynamic.

Cable should go straight thru without any login stuff to deal with like DSL (if you're using a router) and not straight through.

Alan <><  It does go straight thru and I will check the dynamic thing, thanks for info/help Alan !

Solve : My two PCs Won't talk!?

Answer»

Hi

FIXED IT!  (1/1/2007)  PROBLEM turned out to be a CORRUPTED driver on the WINxp computer. Uninstalled the driver, ran the 'add new hardware' from System, and came up working.  Found a good article at the following location, without which I wouldn't have been able to fix the problem.

www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/

Have a great year everyone.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have 2 PCs, one is WIN98SE, the other WIN XP Pro.  I had these directly connected using ethernet cards and a crossover cable, with internet access using Internet Connection Sharing on the WIN98 computer.  Trying to add a new but apparently faulty wireless router has resulted in the computers not being able to communicate over the ethernet. Sure threre's a simple answer to my problem, but I've reached the limit of my knowledge and can't resolve.  Help!!

The ethernet cards (Corega) both have a continuously lit green LED, both cards show 'Working Properly'  The IP addresses are both manually set and different, and the Subnet Mask is set to the same number on both computers.  However, pinging the computers in both DIRECTIONS results in 'timed out'.

Any ideas?

Additional info:  I got the WIN98 PC 'pinging' with my DAUGHTER's laptop (using the same IP address as in the XP computer) so the cable is OK.  I then swapped over the ethernet cards between the WIN98 computer and the XP comuter and the WIN 98 computer would still talk to the laptop, hence the ethernet cards are OK.  The laptop will however not talk to the WIN XP computer, so the problem must lie in the WIN XP computer.  All Firewalls are set to OFF,

Now here's a tricky bit.  When all was well between WIN XP and WIN 98 computers, the only way I was ever able to access the interenet from the WIN XP computer, via the WIN 98 computer which was set for Internet connection Sharing, was to create a Network Bridge using WIN XP between the I1394 connection and the Ethernet connection of the WIN XP computer.  I deleted this bridge somewhere along the line.  Has this something to do with the 'no talking' problem I have?

Any ideas?

HAPPY New Year to all.

Solve : Laptop multi-user query affetcting IE7?

Answer»

New Router - LAPTOP shows connection is working and with good signal STRENGTH - but will only sometimes connect with IE7 ?
Base PC runs fine...WEP enabled....wireless laptop connection is good to go. For some reason my friends laptop has multiple user accounts (windows XP user accounts ) and this seems to be affecting it. I have tried to run with no firewall to get it going. Managed to get all the users IE working at once by switching user accounts, but then I turned laptop off and back on again and I now cannot connect to any page with IE, with any account. anyone got any ideas?

I have never connected a laptop to wireless with more than one user account before and I can't see why this would affect it.
Any comments ( good or bad ) are welcomed.

BTW- only found this forum with searching for this problem so I am new here, but I have solved another issue I had with browsing your forum, so thank you. I will probably be here regular...lol

Edit: just found that if I run the internet wizard each time I switch users or switch it on, I can get IE7 to work......I suggest you start by reading the network FAQ (click link in my signature).  The principles there APPLY to wireless NETWORKS too.  Change any settings as a local administrator of the MACHINE in question.

Solve : Wireless connection without a wireless router?

Answer»

Ok. So what im trying to do is get internet ACCESS on my psp WITHOUT having to go out and buy a wireless router.
Currently i have 3 computers hooked up through a router that isnt wireless. Im using static ip adresses on all computers. I have a wireless card in one of the computers. What im trying to do is use ICS on that computer with adapter to give internet access to my psp.  The problem i run into is as soon as i enable ics i lose internet connection on that computer and obviously my psp cant connect. Also my wireless network connection says its not connected but i assume that is because its not communicating with a router or anything. I got the idea that this might possibley work from this http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx#3

I dunno it seems quite complicated and confusing after i typed this out... any help would be appreciated if this is even possible to get to work. Thanks for any help in advance.WELL Im having trouble with GETTING my PSP on the internet as well using my wireless router So I decided to give that tutorial a try and the PSP couldn't find it, and when you LOOK at it in network connections it says Computer-Computer so maybe it doesnt work with the psp?Start by reading our networking FAQ.  Link in my signature.

Solve : Web pages cant be loaded?

Answer»

I cant load my security software web page or any Chinese web pages or update my security software at home, but I could when I was away at Niagara falls and used the hotel network which was the last 2 days. I connect DIRECTLY to the modem at home, and I used wireless connection at hotel. My friend who lives pretty far away is having the same problem. We use the same network service, which is Rogers Yahoo HIGH Speed. I called the TECH support, they said nothing is wrong with my connection... I used Bitdefender and spy sweeper checked my computer, there wasn't anything. I use Zone labs internet security suite and the homepage is zonelabs.com.

Actually, it started last Saturday, there was a time when i can not load any web pages, but after a while, it fixed itself. Except zonelabs.com. (I was able to load Chinese web pages back then). I googled, zonelab's internal server was down at that moment and I left the second day so....

What seems to be the problem, it's driving me crazy

BTW, my friend was having the same problem on Sat too.

When I tried to ping zonelabs.com, the computer gave me back my loop back adapter's IP address and request always timed out when I tried to ping any Chinese websites.

Also, some web pages can be loaded, but when I ping them, request timed out... Like CNN.com

My operating system is XP professional SP2Search for a file called "HOSTS", somewhere under C:\Windows.  Copy the contents here.Okay, so I woke up this morning, reset my modem (Which I did several times yesterday), I can load zonelabs.com and update the security software now. However, still can not load any Chinese webpages.  :-? :-? :-?

Searched for file name "hosts" under folder C:\windows turned out 2 files. hosts and imhosts.sam, both are in folder c:\winders\system32\drivers\etcJust the contents of the HOSTS file, PLEASE.

Solve : DSL and Web page problem?

Answer»

I hope this is the right PLACE to ask this, but does anyone know how, or if, I can determine if my telephone wiring might be preventing me from loading certain Web pages? I upgraded to Qwest DSL several months ago and some sites load fine, others give me an "operation timed out" error message when they can't load the page. But those same Web pages load fine on dial up. I've gone through everything on my computer, Windows XP and had Qwest send me a second DSL modem. Today, I tried my lap top from work and I had the same problems on the same pages.   That LEADS me to think it's in the wiring. Any help would be appreciated.
:-?If some sites load fine and others don't, it is not likely to be a line problem.mithmc  ..........  I TEND to AGREE with  2k_dummy, that the issue isn't a phone line problem .
How many sites are you having issue with ?

dl65  What browser are you using?     and if you can try more than one browser, do they all behave the same?

Because I use Firefox, I have been following:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=502436&sid=63d9d2f88619150578885a0a2bf18f34

which I immediately thought of when I saw your post.    The signal-to-noise ratio is  rather high in that thread,  but reading between the lines it appears that there might be something to the complaint about the recent upgrade(s).

If you are using Firefox, have you recently upgraded?

I have this problem with some newspaper sites, Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News most often. I get the same error message with Firefox, Netscape and IE. I've upgraded Firefox and IE to the latest versions. I also can't log on to any site that requires a password. The reason I thought it might be the wiring is because I have Qwest DSL at my office and I use the same laptop there and never have a problem. I used that laptop here at HOME and got the same error messages when I tried to go to the Post and News sites.

Solve : NEED HELP NETWORKING LAPTOP!?

my friends laptop has windows XP home installed on it and my comp has windows XP professional. i followed a few tutorials on networking and none of them seem to work.

i have created a workgroup called "HOME" and my friend had joined the workgroup. the problem is, i cannot see his computer. it does not appear  in my workgroup. also, he can see my computer but is denied ACCESS. it says something along the lines of "you do not have access rights or priveledges to view these files. contact the administrator."

i have used the "setup home or small office network" wizard and so has my friend, with no success. i could really use some help here.If it is file sharing you are trying to do please see this article:

hope this helps .NINE times out of ten this is caused by an incorrectly configured firewall.  The firewalls need to allow access to ports 137 to 139 and 1512 on the LOCAL network.router firewall or software firewall? i have zone alarm firewall as well as a BUILT in firewall in my router.Software firewall.  Don't on any account open those ports on the router!what if i just turn the firewall off for the time being? i cannot seem to find setup for zonealarm. No!

Solve : Wireless Networking Security?

Answer»

Hello All .... I have been using 128-Bit WEP with a single key for all 4 keys in the Linksys Access Points, and Bridges. Usually you can create a series of 4 keys from a pass phrase. When all 4 are created, I delete the other 3 and copy and paste the first key to the 3 empty slots, then I save the configurations.

I checked the other day for firmware updates and all the devices had the latest firmware version with release date codes of 2004 or 2005.

Does anyone know of how easy it would be to break into our network through these devices with 128-BIT WEP with a single key, and MAC Filtering???

I heard of WEP crackers that are available for the Linux OS and users with laptops with WiFi. Not sure of any for MS OS yet, but I am sure they are out there.

Hoping that the MAC filtering as a second line of defense is good enough or not, since WEP can be cracked....

Is it time to buy new hardware that uses WPA or a newer security measures since it looks like these Linksys devices that are wireless B and G may no longer be supported for security flaws etc, even if WPA capable?

Also ... Are there any tools out there to test or assess wireless security???

Can you go to WPA?

ALAN <>< Any security can be cracked if the cracker has the time and patience. There is no such thing as fool proof security (yet). A couple of things you can do to increase security is to turn off SSID broadcast and limit the number of IP's that the router will issue. My Linksys router allows me to limit the IP's to the exact number of machines, but some routers require that number +1. These measures are sufficient to discourage all but hard core crackers, and they would have to want in PRETTY BADLY to take the steps necessary to get into your network. Thanks ale52... I am going to see if the older Wireless B hardware supports WPA... I think the old Wireless B Linksys Bridges might only do WEP. I dont remember WPA being an option.

Thanks 2k_dummy... I believe our SSID's are being broadcasted and I will have to shut that feature off. I like the idea about limiting the number of leases by limiting the IP's, but I think that this might be a problem a for we have mobile users with laptops who come and go and the number is ALWAYS fluctuating between say 10 and 20 devices connected at a time.

Thanks for your help!!!Then max out the addresses at say 25 or 30...still leaves room for variables.

Solve : NIC isn't working.?

Answer» HELLO there. I'll get straight to the point.
My NIC's LEDS (green and yellow) are flashing simultaneously, and neither Windows nor Linux can detect network connection. On WinXP though for a sec there it shows as if it was acquiring network address. I know for sure that the cable is OK, I'm using it right now as i TYPE. The problem is on my notebook, Acer Aspire 3630. Windows XP SP2 fresh installation... I've tried Knoppix, Ubuntu Live CDs to check whether the problem was with windows.
any suggestions?
Thanks!

edit:
it happened after i've reinstalled windows. strange, isn't it? well... maybe it doesn't have anything to do with it.
don't remember dropping or damaging the notebook in anyway...
my internet connection is through a local gateway, the IP addresses are assigned by DHCPCheck in device manager and see what kind of problem is indicated.done that. "device is working properly" tried REINSTALLING the driver.. same result

by the way the NIC is "SiS 900 based pci fast ethernet adapter"After reinstalling windows, did you reinstall the NIC drivers. Or is it a windows generic driver?i've backed up the drivers. i've installed the ones i used before the reinstallation of windows. If the problem were specific to Windows, you'd EXPECT Knoppix to work...anyways thanks guys. i appreciate your help. i think the slot is damaged or the lan card itself. have to take it to the service center.A new card won't hurt the pocketbook much...DITTO Patio.  Try replacing the NIC 1st. It'll save some major $ and isn't hard to to.  They usually come with instructions.

Solve : Accessing Printer Across the Network?

Answer»

Hello again!!

Waiting for an answer on another problem elsewhere in the forum, I find myself roaming this website trying to read as many posts to learn as much as I can, but alas I have another question!!

I have a home network.  In this home network I have a router, branching to two computers.  One of these computers has a printer.  I want the other computer to be able to print off that printer.  However something that is odd is when I click on "Network Places" I cannot find the other computer.

My router DOES RECOGNIZE both machines, and they both gain internet access.  I did NOT use a Windows WIZARD to create a Home/Office Network.

Just something that I've been WONDERING about...

Thanks a lot!!Ideally, you need to ensure that these computers are both members of the same workgroup.  You must then switch on printer sharing.  Do you know how to do that?Yup! They are in the same workgroup, but still can't see eachother via network places.  My router recognizes both, but they dont recognize eachotherYou need to allow ports 137 to 139 and 1512 on your XP firewalls.  (This is one of the things that the wizard would otherwise do for you.)If you're using NORTON Internet Security or the McAfee suite, turn off their firewalls.  Both are the biggest PITA when involved with networking.  Now turn on Windows firewall.

Alan <><  Hey, once I get my computer back together I'll test this out and let you know how it goes! Thanks
