Solve : how to prevent ip conflict?

Answer»

here is the scenario. i have a VPN with two segmen of ip addrs..
one segment is static and the other one is DYNAMIC.. on the dynamic part
i dont have any problem.. on the static on i have.. although i have
the control of static ip address.. there are instances, especially those
user who have laptop/notebook when they plug-in to our network, chances
are thier ip will conlict to ours.. is there anyway to block those use
to prevent any further ip conflict.

thanks and more power. The static IP's must be outside the range of the dynamic IP's. For example, if the router is set to use the IP range 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.255 and you have 10 computers using dynamic IP's. The router will normally assign the dynamic IP's 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1.101, etc. through 192.168.1.109. Allow sufficient IP's for any other network devices that use dynamic IP's. The first static IP cannot be within this range. It must be, in this example, higher than the highest dynamic IP, and no two machines can have the same IP.thanks for the reply.. but im using two different segment of ip.
192.... for static. .and 172. for dynamic.. im using throughout to
both. 1 to 255. my concern is to the 192... series. which this
laptop user... (who doesnt have idea what ip i have been used)
will come here plug in their pc. without knowing that their ip on their laptop
will conflict on our existing ip.. so how can i block them..
is there a way. ?
again.. THANK a lot.Change your static IP range, so instead of 192.168.0 you will have 192.168.10, for example. I can guarantee you that the 10 network is very-very seldom used in small networks.
Yes, you can "block" this conflicts by configuring the switches to make MAC filtering - in fact you are not blocking conflicts, you avoid them. MAC filtering, REPORTING to the size of your network, COULD be a huge hassle - it's better to change your static IP range.

Solve : Cannot access 192.168.2.1 through router?

Answer»

Hi all! I cannot get internet access through my Belkin N1 Router. My LAN connection is perfectly fine, and WORKS even when connected through the router, but I think there might have been an issue with some settings being changed. I cannot access 192.168.2.1 to CHANGE any of these settings. I have tried the reset button on the router to no avail and all of the connections. I am not sure what I can do. I have tried pinging 192.168.2.1 and I get 'Request timed out' so obviously it isn't connecting. What can I do to fix this? I have included what SHOWS up when I type ipconfig /all

192.168.2.1 can't be reached because you are not on that subnet. Your machine has a IP of 67.182.251.112 with a gateway of 67.182.250.1

What this means is that your machine is picking up a DHCP settings from your ISP and not your router. You will need to configure your router for DHCP to your client machines to get this to work.

I have this exact same problem. What do you mean by:

"your machine is picking up a DHCP settings from your ISP and not your router. You will need to configure your router for DHCP to your client machines to get this to work."

How do I configure my router for DHCP?

Disconnect the internet plug and restart all the things through to the computer. Then without it being plugged in perform 'ipconfig /all' again, and see what your default gateway is.192.168.x.x is an internal IP. So is 10.x.x.x & 172.x.x.x.

You must be running a router or have a DHCP server to access these IP's.

Alan <>< [Off topic]
ale52, the ranges of private IPs are:

192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (right as you said)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (you made an error regarding this range)
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (right as you said)

And, more recent, the IPs used by Windows apipa (169.254.0.0 - 169.255.255).
I'm apologizing for my "error corection". I hope I did not upset you for that.

Solve : Finding personal info through IP?

Answer»

Hey there everyone,

is there any way someone can FIND out your personal information such as your name, address, phone number, etc etc. if they know your IP address? I'm pretty sure you can find an address with an IP but you will need a very expensive program. The amount of info you can extract from the average IP is actually rather LIMITED. You can usually get a country of origin, the ISP who owns it and sometimes you can narrow it down to a specific city or region (and it only shows the city/region where the ISP's server is located that isn't necessarily where you live).
Only your ISP should be holding the information that ties your name and address to a specific IP.

If you got a domain name registered it's a whole different story though. But that only applies if you own and run your own domain.

Btw. you can check out the information AVAILABLE yourself.
Go to this site and get your IP.
http://myip.dk/

Then go here
http://www.dnsstuff.com/
And find the box called IP Information. (Scroll down a bit).
Enter your IP and Lookup. This site can be fun to play with:

You don't have to sign up to do a few lookups.Usually, about the best you can get from an IP is your ISP's address. A search for my IP will almost always bring up Reston, Virginia. I don't live near Virginia, nor have I ever even been there. The closest the admin here has been able to get to tracing me is MOUNTAIN View, which is still a few hours away from where I actually live.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 18, 2007, 09:24:49 PM

Hmmm, on my Win XP Pro SP2 comp using Firefox, I get this when I enter my IP address in the IP Information box and click on Lookup. I can't go beyond that screen unless I click on Join Now or Login, which I can't do because I have not registered.

But, on ANOTHER computer (notebook w/Vista and using IE7), I could get lookups, just as you said.

Solve : Internet Connection keeps going out?

Answer»

Hi all! I'm begging for your tips on this problem.

About 3 weeks ago I was ONLINE and my INTERNET connection suddenly went out. The next morning it came back on, only to go out 10 minutes later. What seems to be happening is the internet will be on sometimes for hours others for minutes before it goes out and says, "local area connection not connected." The only way I can get my internet to come back on is by putting the computer in stand by mode and hitting the power button to restart it. I've called the ISP and they've come out, I've called Microsoft, and HP but still no one seems to know the problem. I even did a system restore on the computer back to it's original factory settings but it still didn't resolve the issue. Do you think it could be the network card on the computer? I'm at a loss for ideas and I haven't even had my PC for a year YET. Any advice or help, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Does your computer connect to the internet through a router? If so are there any other computers that experience similar symptoms?

If it's the only computer, going through a modem, which I assume STAYS on when this occurs (check the lights), then yes I'd say it's probably a hardware based issue.

Have you tried updating or ROLLING back drivers? On the same line; any thing you think you may have done that caused this behavior? No, I have DSL. Free internet service from my apartment complex. There is an ethernet cord plugged in from my computer to the wall jack. The internet also seems to go out sometimes when I go to certain sites, i.e. myspace, youtube, facebook, yahoo. I don't know why...sometimes it stays on other times it completely drops. It seems like if I'm playing a video on youtube or listening to music on a page, it makes the connection slow down and that's when the internet stops responding and drops.Quote

If you ask me, i'd say ask your landlord and inform him about what's happening.

Solve : Simple way to set up LAN connection??

Answer»

My brother has recently been LOOKING for easy ways to set up a LAN connection connected my computer with his, so I'm wondering if anyone has any simple ways to set up a LAN connection or a link to a site that can help? Or if there aren't any simple ways, any way would be accepted.

Thanks.I believe you had XP SP2 but what is the OS of your brother his system?

Jonas There are lots of sites you can visit for guides on how to SETUP home netowrking.

Here's one:

http://www.homenethelp.com/home-network.asp

If you NEED more assistance...just try googling it.Jonas, my brother has almost exactly the same computer as me (so, XP SP2), except for a difference in RAM and graphics.

Saviour, I'll look into that. Thanks! What do you want to do with that connection?
Share FILES and folders, printers,...
If that's the case you only need to be in the same workgroup.
System PROPERTIES -> Computer name -> click Network ID -> computer is part of business network -> Without domain -> Give the workgroup a specific name -> Click finish and restart.
Or is it something else you want to do with the LAN connection?

Solve : What is normal for packet send/recieve behavior??

Answer»

Hi,
If someone can help me with this, I'd appreciate it.

My computer is recieving a lot of packets. I think it's more than usual. Also, I have 2 programs (Zone Alarm & NetworkActiv Sniffer) running to intercept the packets. Some packets bounce off ZA. Some of the packets are seen by the sniffer. The sniffer mainly detects 2 ips. One I identified as one of my isp's servers. The other seems to be a "relay point".(I'm not sure if that's the proper term.)

I TRIED turning off a lot of unecessary net services (Windows Time for example), but it didn't help.

So, what would be a "normal" amount of packets to be recieving while idle? I'm getting an average of 5 per minute past my security. Another 15 per minute are bouncing off ZA. Any suggestions? Have I been hacked?

-dudemanIt's perfectly normal for your firewall to detect a lot of incoming packets. This usually doesn't pose any real danger and is commonly known as internet background noise. As long as you've got a firewall up to block it, you should be safe. It's also normal to receive packets from your ISP even though you're idle. The packets are usually to keep the connection alive.

A much better way to detect malicious activity is to look at what you're computer is sending. Look for programs you don't know sending data or programs sending data to IPs they shouldn't be sending too.Okay, acording to my firewall... A certain IP is attempting to access my computer. After it bounces off a couple times, it changes ports. Then the IP changes ever-so-slightly. (221.208.xxx.xx or 221.209.xxx.xx) The "x's" change 1-2 a minute, along with the ports. These appear to be from an ISP called: CNCGROUP Heilongjiang Province Network. Since I'm not in China... I can only assume this is some sort of attack. From what my ZA logs tell me, this has been going on for days.

The other IP is 24.64.xx.xxx It also changes ports & IPs. However it all seems to come from Shaw Communications Inc. This company is Canada-based. I'm not in Canada either.

Those are just 2 of the many that are bouncing off the firewall. Packets are getting THROUGH the firewall from several other IPs. One of which is from my own ISP. Another like, 76.9.xx.xx Is not from my ISP, and appears to be from ISPrime, Inc. Another one is Google Inc. I don't have google-anything open at the moment. This comp doesn't host a website. Why would google be sending/recieving packets from me?

In fact, Google seems to make a transfer with my computer each time I access a web page. I thought I uninstalled the google toolbar. Google = Skynet? : ) j/k Anyway, there is some more info on my problem.

If anyone has any ideas. Please tell me.Quote from: dudeman2 on August 12, 2007, 12:42:10 AM

That sounds like port scans. I.e. someone is scanning IP's looking for a computer with an open port. This is most likely not a attack directed specifically at you but rather someone scanning an entire IP range. Since you got a firewall up there isn't any real danger.
If you want them to stop you can block the IP ranges. You could also try looking up the contact email for the ISPs and notify them of these port scans. There's a small chance they'll kick the user of their net.

You certain you don't have any Google related software installed? Also many webpages uses Google ads or Google Analytics which may also account for frequent transfers from Google. If you are ina public place or on a wireless connection I reccomend getting ARPWatch, so that you are AWARE if someone poisons your ARP cache.

Heh, looks like there is Google software installed. I'll be removing it shortly. I've got those IP's blocked(from China & Canada), and it's working well. However, my "network sniffer" program is detecting a communication I don't understand.

I think this is called an "internal" ip communication. I'm not sure. That's why I'm needing help. The sniffer is showing a packet sent from 10.xx.xxx.x to 255.255.255.255 . This packet was sent 771 times over the course of 8 hours. I couldn't find much information on this. The info I did find was overly technical.

I'm not in a public place or on wireless. I'm not a little paranoid. I'm very paranoid. However, it has nothing to do with illegal activities. I'm a gamer, and I want maximum speed out of my connection. If some thing is using 1/4 of 1% of my bandwidth (and it is not needed), I want it stopped. I also like to know that I can use Ebay, paypal, and do online banking without worry.

Life will be a lot better when I understand how to keep my bandwidth clear. (Except when I specifically want to use it.)Quote from: dudeman2 on August 17, 2007, 09:09:25 PM

When a packet is sent to 255.255.255.255 this means the sender is broadcasting something. This is most likely windows advertising your computer on the network (allowing other computers to see it). This is totally normal and not something you need to worry about, the broadcast can't leave your LAN. And 771 packets over 8 hours isn't exactly something that is going to bog down your connection either.Just a tip, but if you keep going around being paranoid about every single packet that your computer sends and receives then you mayswell just disconnect your internet. Seriously, the MAXIMUM size for a packet is only ~1.5KB and it's nothing to be scared about, packets are just the name for EVERY PIECE of information that is transmitted across the internet and between computers.

Therefore 771 packets over eight hours is like 150KB/h, IF they were maximum size? Thats nothing and if it could be stopped it's not worth the effort. Thats nothing and your time service sends what, one packet a day, even less.

Why are you killing all your net based services as well? You are not going to see any noticeable difference in speed, but will only have more troubles further down the line.

You have a ZA firewall, thats the most I could recommend and it will alert you to ANY connection trying to be made to your computer. If you get hacked it's something you did bad on your end or you left a vulnerable program receiving connections on an open port.

Look, you want maximum speed this isn't the way to GO around it, you want to optimize your MTU and what not. Online gamings not about speed anyway, it's latency and you can't change that at your end.

A quarter of one percent of a 4000Kb (4Mb) connection is 10Kb. At 10Kbs a second it would TAKE you two hours to get a 1MB file.

Solve : Networking Problem?

Answer»

So I just bought a laptop and want to share the internet connection I have with my pc. My problem is that my PC is an old dell desktop and those stupid guys at dell made it so that it doesn't have an ETHERNET port. Right now it is CONNECTED to my modem via usb. So if I get a router how can I connect it without an ethernet port in my PC?

Please help! There is no ethernet port? Are you sure? It is most probably quite old then..

I'd say get a slot in PCI ethernet CARD, that is, if your motherboard has the required slots.Thank you for your help!... i opened up my computer and found ONE free PCI slot open. Hopefully this will work.

Solve : OMG LAG!!?

Answer»

Good day

Okay where do I start, I few DAYS ago I was having problems with connecting to the internet. Sometimes it would connect sometimes it wouldn't. After repeated CALLS to my ISP provider (TELUS), they finally GOT around to fixing the problem. They said they found a card/port or something on their end with was failing so they replaced it. After they replaced it I was able to connect to the internet but now my Latency/ping to all servers is 20-30 ms higher then normal. My latency/ping to Seattle before the problem was 15-19ms and now it is 35-40ms. (It's a problem because I like to play counterstrike; servers which I played on before the problem are not smooth now. It is nearly impossible to play competively on a server with over 80ms). Again after repeated calls they said are not able to find a problem and there is no problem on their end. But last year I had this exact same problem, some problem on the port, sporadic connections and latency/ping time all higher then normal. A technician replaced the port and did something and everything was okay. Does anyone have any idea what would cause my latency to go up by 20-30ms to all servers. Could it be some SORT of jitter or maybe a bad algorism? I need something so I can shove it in there faces.

Solve : Router connection issues?

Answer»

I recently purchased a D-Link DSL 2540B router. I installed it and connected to its' IP address and followed the WIZARD. The DSL, LAN, and Internet lights on the router were lit but I am UNABLE to connect to the internet. I ran the diagnostics and failed two of the ping-related tests. I have followed the troubleshooting suggestions but I still can't connect to the internet. Can anyone point me in the right direction? You'll have to be a lot more specific on details...like:

Operating system / does it connect directly to the modem without the router / disabled the firewall in windows?

Alan <>< Turn your DSL modem off...or UNPLUG it.

Turn your router off...or unplug it.

Wait 30 seconds...turn your router back on and let it cycle to make sure it is working properly.

When you're sure the router is functioning normally...turn on your modem...

After the modem cycles...refresh your browser to see if you have a web page.

Solve : Intermittent connectivity?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100, a Netgear MR314 router, and a Linksys wireless card.......but my connection comes and goes. There are no issues with interference, the router is less than 10 ft. away from the card with absolutely nothing in between. I had the router and card for my old IBM laptop, perhaps I need new, updated equipment??? If so, would appreciate any suggestions for quality/reliable, yet RELATIVELY inexpensive products.Did you try updating the driver?
What OS do you have?
Did you disable the possibility of windows to shut the NIC off?
What protection do you have?

Jonas Guess I left some of my info off, SORRY.

My OS is Windows XP Home edition......I've tried getting new drivers for the MR314 and none are available so that's not a option. The router is nearly 5 yrs. old as well as the wireless card for my laptop.

My CURRENT protective SERVICE is McAfee but that was also my mode on my old laptop. This intermittent problem has occurred ever since I got the new Dell.

If you had to pick new, reliable, but relatively inexpensive equipment what would you suggest???What you probably need is an XP compatable driver for the Linksys card.

edit: If the computer has BUILT in wireless, you should disable it or remove the Linksys.

Solve : how to set up a remote desktop connection??

Answer»

Well I have a workgroup. 3 Win xp sp2 and 1 win vista home premium.
I want to create a remote desktop connection to all computers and they must be able to connect to my PC to.
I have Win XP SP2.
Thanks in advance

Jonas

BTW: I don't have a reason why I do this I just want to learn how.
(Google doesn't offer much help)Well in XP all you need to do is go to System Properties. (right click my computer and select properties.)
Then select Remote and check "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer." Then you can connect to the computer using either the computer name (if on the same network) or the IP. The easiest way to login is with a user that is already created on the computer.
I can't remember the procedure for Vista and my laptop (with vista on it) isn't around right now. But it should be similar to XP.I tried that but it didn't work.
Oh well I thought that was the way but now I found out that there is something wrong with my computer.
I am in the same workgroup with the same networkID.
But I can't see any computers of the network.
It has worked for moths.
It could be a hardware problem,x I guess.(Again)
Thanks for HELPING me.

Jonas It could also be a firewall blocking you from seeing others on the network... either on your end or theirs. If you have a fire wall, see if there is any settings allowing or disallowing file and printer sharing. If you have a fire wall let me know what program you are using.

programming_patThat's right. It could be your windows firewall or any other firewall. Normally windows firewall doesn't allow remote desktop connection. To enable it, got to control panel > Windows Firewall > the Right Most Tab > Settings for your local network , then tick the box labelled "remote desktop".

That might help.I set up the network in the first place so I know what can be blocking it.
I have set up the firewall properly.
(Allow network detection and allow printer and file sharing.)
It has worked moths.
It just stopped working. Why
I can't see think of any software witch is blocking it.

Jonas Actually I checked every setting and I found a strange one called "Video- watching video's on Internet".
I didn't know a firewall could block it so I unchecked it.
Strangely enough that solved the problem.
How can this be that a Video allow setting blocks a network detection?

Crappy firewall? Well it's the firewall of Windows Live OneCare.
And (Don't ask me Why) I think OneCare is a good program.
Oh: I can still look at online videos.

Jonas Well after STRUGGLING with the firewall I was able to get to the welcome screen of the remote computer.
But when I enter the PW and hit enter.
I got the error message: can't connect due to an account limitation.
What can it be?
I enable remote control.
Its just not my lucky day I guess.

Jonas Do the user you try to login as have admin privileges? Its not the actual admin but it is a computer admin account.

Jonas
Is it a XP or Vista machine you're trying to log in to?I have problems with rdp on a very random basis. You're best bet is to get a third party remote control program.
Currently, at work, we are using Remote Control Pro by Alchemy-Lab. But I'm trying to get the manager to buy CrossTec Remote Control because it has almost zero limitations. But, you probably don't have the extra $400 to SPEND on it for 3 computers. (We're buying 50 licenses for $3700!)
Look on sourceforge.net for remote control programs. They've got a few good ones and they will probably work better than microsoft stuff. Search for vnc.
A XP home SP2.
With use of the remote desktop connection program.
I don't know how I got that program.(Doesn't matter I love it.)But I would like to be able to use it.
The XP home doesn't have that program and is also up-to-date.

Jonas Hmm don't know why can't login...
Try entering the computer name before the username like this.
\computername\username

Btw. the remote desktop program is installed by default in XP Pro. But you can install it on a XP Home machine.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx
(read the last paragraph)
Well I can't TYPE \\computername\username
as he only askes for the computername.

And should the program be installed on both computers in order to work?
As we only got a recovery CD.

Jonas Are your two computers connected to the same network? No you shouldn't need to install anything on the computer you're connecting to.Same workgroup same SSID.
Still doesn't work

Jonas Quote
You are unable to log on because of an account restriction.

Cause: You cannot connect because the account you are using for the connection requires a password.

Solution: Set a password for that user account.
I found the above, as I understand it the account you try to login as must have a password. That could be the solution.
I can't test it wright now but I'll let you know thanks for helping me (Again) Mate!

Jonas Wauw it worked!!! Thanks Deerpark!!!!
Next problem: It doesn't work at the Vista home premium computer.
I enabled everything like I did at the XP computer, Same workgroup and firewall.

Jonas
Oh I forgot to say the Vista comp has only 1 PW protected (admin privileged) account.
Its always an admin privileged account if you only have 1 account but I thought it would be better to mention it. (As this is GETTING to be a tortural.)

Jonas Hmm not entirely sure what the problem is then.
What error does it give you?
Also try this update on your xp machine.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925876Well that's the strange part I don't get any message.
Its like when I connect I get immediately disconnected.
I Installed the update.
I'll let you know if it worked.

Solve : At which speed my LAN operate? 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps?

Answer»

Hi,

In my home i have 5 PCS (all desktop).

they are wired using cat 6 cable and use a gigabyte switch.

i added two new pcs and their network card says 10/100/1000 Mbps.

i dont know the SPECIFICATION of old pc's network cards.

In some computer, at the task bar, network notification icon shows 100 Mbps.

what i would like to know is, whether my LAN operate at 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps?

i was told by a friend that LAN would operate at 100 Mbps. his justification was that switch would pick up the slowest NIC's speed and operate the whole LAN at that speed. If you had 2 computers which are 1000, a few 100's and say one 10mbps device, the speed from 1000 mbps computer to the next through the 10/100/1000 switch will be 1000. If these 1000 mbps systems had to talk to the 100mbps system, then they would sync at 100 instead of 1000 to talk at the same speed. And for the 10mbps device, everything talking to it would have to ramp down to 10mbps to do so.

The only relationship to speed that your friend mentioned as the slowest device will send everything onto that slower mode would be true for a system bus where a slower (older) device would bring the speed down to like ATA 33 for plugging on an old IDE HD paired up with a new ATA100 or ATA133, or RAM a 667mhz stick in which and 800 mismatch would run at 667, but this is not true of your network. The networs switch is olnly bottlenecked by what it interacts with and the maximum speed of the switch.

HUBs however may degrade, but Swictes will allow for all different speeds to work in harmony and the fastest speed available between devices.

Solve : wireless link being dropped every so often?

Answer»

I have a laptop that i have connected wirelessly to a router. The connection was fine until just yesterday when I noticed that every so often the link would get dropped and internet access stopped. And when I went to 'available wireless networks', I didnt see my network anymore.

So I unplugged the router from the power, plugged it back after 10 secs, and the network reappeared in my 'available wireless networks'. All was fine for ten minutes and then the connection got dropped again, with my network dissapearing from the 'view available networks'. So I unplugged and plugged the router again to make my network appear again in the 'view available networks'. Ten minutes later the connection was lost again.

Why is this happening and how do I fix it? I can see my neighbour's networks but not mine. Also I scanned my system to see if I had a virus. No detection.

Im using win XP Home, a Belkin router, and a DLink wireless card in my laptop

What are the model numbers of the Belkin router and DLink wireless card?

What is the service pack level of your Windows XP Home system?

Are you actively using the wireless link when it drops out, or has it been sitting idle for ten minutes?Bypass router, and go straight to the MODEM. Same thing happens?dahlar: I have service pack 2, my belkin router is model f5d7230-4. I have a linksys wireless card (dont know model number of the card)

I did call belkin this morning, and they told me to change my encryption from WPA to WEP and change my channel from 1 to 6. I have no idea why I had to do this or what this change means, cause everything was working fine for the first TWO months. Anyway, my internet connection is working properly right now. Could it be that my neighbour's wireless connection was affecting my connection, but if it was, then why isn't it anymore? Not that Im COMPLAINING, but can someone explain to me what the encryption change and the channel change really did.

broni: I have a router cause I have three laptops networked. But I did try your suggestion, same thing happened. But anyway, the problem is fixed for now

Thanks all for your concern

Could it be that my neighbour's wireless connection was affecting my connection, but if it was, then why isn't it anymore? Not that Im complaining, but can someone explain to me what the encryption change and the channel change really did.

1. It's possible your neighbor was on the same channel (or one close to it).

From the following link: Should You Ever SWITCH Wireless Channels?
Quote
So to answer your question, unless you have a specific reason for changing it, I would suggest you keep your wireless channel configured for the manufacturer's default settings. If, however, you must change it, for the best performance I would suggest trying to use one of the other non-overlapping channels first: Channels 1, 6, and 11. Other then interference issues, there really is no other reason or advantage to selecting another channel.

2. Encryption Change. Since two things were changed, channel and encryption, it's not possible to say which one resolved your issue, if any. Normally you would change and test one thing at a time. That being said, Belkin support took the easy way out and set you up with WEP encryption. It is the weakest encryption but the one that's most likely to work when they don't know the "exact" details of your wireless configuration (make/model number, hardware version, and firmware version of linksys wireless adaptor; Microsoft patches applied; hardware version, firmware version of Belkin router). They wanted to get you up and running as quickly as possible.

Given a choice you should always choose a version of WPA or WPA2 if all of your wireless components support it. Basically you should be using the best/highest encryption that you can get working. You should read the User Manual for your Belkin Router and Linksys Wireless adaptor before attempting to change it. (And so you have some background in the subject if someone is assisting you in the setup.)

Your Service Set Identifier (SSID), aka network name, should be changed from the default. Leaving it as the default lets everyone know you have a Belkin router. I would think it could also cause problems if your neighbors are using the same name and channel on their Belkin routers.

3. Reference(s):

User Manualdahlar,

Thanks for the info about the encryption strength. I thought WEP was the strong one but after reading your post I changed it to WPA/WPA2. My connection is fine, and I think it was the channel that was causing interference with my neighbour.

One question I have is about the strength. When my laptop connects to the internet, it says 'Strength: Excellent'. But then when I click on the monitor icon, it says 'Strength: Low'. And when I go to the 'View available networks, it shows as strength excellent as all the connection bars are green'.

So is my connection really excellent strength or low strength even though the view wireless networks says excellent.

And if it is low how do i get to be excellent
I don't have the answer to your "strength" question. While I have a "wireless" home router, I don't currently have a wireless link available. (Don't have computer with wireless NIC adapter, so I can't play with it.)

Extend the range and the strength of your wireless network. Unfortunately I can't find a date on this article so don't know how current it is.

If memory serves me correct, I think the transmission RATE for your wireless link may be automatically adjusted down/up based on signal strength. If this is true, monitor the throughput rate on your wireless link. The closer you're operating towards the theoretical limit for your wireless link technology (802.11b? 802.11g? 802.11n?), the stronger your signal is.

No, I don't know where or how you can monitor the throughput rate; but I've got to believe the capability exists somewhere.

Solve : Can't use the internet on my laptop, even though Connect To says "connected"?

Answer»

In short: I can't use the internet on my laptop with my wireless router, even though Connect To says i'm "connected". I've been able to use it before, and when it acted up I (think) I was able to restore it by unplugging the router's internet cord (ethernet?) browsing the web with it in my laptop, and plugging it back into the router. But now it seems nothing will fix it.

Detailed: I've got a new HP Pavilion tx2110us with Vista Home Premium and a D-Link WBR-1310 Wireless-G Router. The router is just connected to the ethernet cord in my room because the routers instructions gave no information on making a SECURE connection with it to act as a sort of wireless extension cord rather than as a household's sole router.
For a while after the first TIME it was hooked up, I got no internet, until one time in Firefox a D-Link page came up asking for a password. I didn't do ANYTHING with it. So then finally later i started getting wireless internet for a few days (this I guess happened because I turned on the connection in Connect To). Then it stopped WORKING when I accidentally unplugged the router's power. Plugging it back in didn't solve it. But i think plugging the router's ethernet into my laptop for wired browsing, then plugging it back into the router later was what got it working again.
But now I've lost internet for no apparent reason (yes, still saying "connected"), and no sequence of unplugging and replugging, disconnecting and reconnecting, or turning off and on that I can think of is fixing it... Help??? Thanks!I had a similar problem, and the way it was resolved was by a call to the router manufacturer. What they said was that the encryption settings were wrong and they told me to change my internet uplink channel to get a stronger signal. And after changing the settings I have had no problems

hope your problem GETS resolved soon.
Silly me, that makes sense! Will do, thanks!

Solve : Just bought a new laptop and need help with wireless info.?

Answer»

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite A215-S5837. I don't currently have WIRELESS at HOME and can't pick up on any unsecured networks either. I think I would rather just go through a wireless service provider such as Verizon or at&t as opposed to having a router and all that installed in my home and for MOBILITY reasons as well. I'm a little confused on some things tho. Is there a difference between wireless and broadband connect cards? I have to have an expresscard for my computer, is there one that is better than the others? Do I have to use an expresscard or can I use the USB models?

I basically want to be able to access the internet from anywhere w/o any problems. I'm just not sure what I need. I've never had a laptop before and I'm only familiar with your basic desktop internet connections via modem. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!If you want it so that not so much sticks out of the side of your laptop, go with the actual card. Also, with the card, they make Routers for it so if u ever want to share it over more than one computer. I work at a place where they sell these cards, and if you dont have any preference, go with Sprint. Its 59.99 a month for unlimited access. I know Verizon offers 59.99 for 5GB PER monthm which is a lot. However, if you go onto the internet often and download things, go with sprint card. Hope this helps Yes, there is. Your wireless card is good for standard wifi, connecting to a router. USB or express cards both work about the same. The only thing I would warn about is that currently your home wifi over a broadband ISP will be signifigantly faster than using a connector from one of the cell carriers.

Solve : Can't connect. Alleged adapter issue.?

Hello.

Having a bit of a PROBLEM with my PC. It won't RECOGNIZE my new internet connection.

And I can't get it to release an old 177 IP ADDRESS, EVERY time I try to release it, I get an error message reading "the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissable for this operation". My adapter has never had any problems being permissable before.

So, I can't get it to auto connect, and when I put all the connection info in manually, the little icon says "limited or no CONNECTIVITY".

Anyone know why my "adapter isn't in the state permissable for this operation"? Or whatever other problem it could be?Just a few questions. What OS are you running? And what internet provider do you have? Also, are you plugged into a router, or direct to the modem?

Solve : Buying a new router?

Hello, i'd like to buy a new Wired router and im not quite sure which one i should get. I used to have a wireless (trendnet 431 brp), it gave me lots of problems, random disconnections, it was very slow and hard to work with... thats why id like to buy a wired one, anyways I tried comparing two routers which seemed to be the most popular ONES on several sites, this is the page i got:
http://www.epinions.com/compare.html?submitted_form=side_by_side&prod20309490=on&prod20197360=on&previous_page=%2FRouters--reviews--19209_wired%2Fpp_%7E1%2Fsort_%7Erating%2Fsort_dir_%7Edes%2Fsec_%7Eproduct_list
mainly what i wanted to ask you is should i get one of these routers? if not can u recommend one for me?
there are lots of specifications i dont understand on the comparing page and if its not too much of a burden, id like it if you EXPLAIN it to me...
last thing id like to add is that i mainly need a high-speed router, one that will not effect my internet speed much because i mostly spend my time playing net-games (the speed is the most important thing for me...)
plenty of thanks for your time and reply's =]]]
IdanPI like this one:

http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/WiredRouters/RP614.aspx

I am a little biased SINCE I like netgear way better than linksys. Ask for more opinions tho man thanks for the quick reply, ive found some good reviews regarding this router, however i cant seem to find a place who has it for sale in Israel =[
Im using a cable modem and all i could find is ADSL routers =[I've had really good luck with linksys myself. The asdsl one you are talking about is a combo router and modem. what you need is a regular router. most home use routers are 10/100 UNLESS you want to spend some money on getting a gigbyte router which can be costly. When I game with my friends we just use a regular router and a ethernet switch to hook everyone up and it works great. But you were saying that you would like a high speed router but you don't really need one. I would check out best buy or circuit city or even radio shack or comparable store and they would have what you need. But get a router that SAYS broadband and that will work for cable and dsl.hey thanks for the usefull reply =]
i kinda like this one:

wanted to ask what you think of it?
i personally dont mind spending an extra 20-30$ for a faster router so...

2. If you're going to print on the Windows XP printer from Vista, you're going to need Vista drivers for that printer. You can add (install?) the Vista drivers to the definition of the printer on Windows XP and they will automatically download to Vista machine when it connects to the printer. That is the preferred method. I believe you can also define the Windows XP printer as a "network" printer on Vista machine and install Vista drivers directly on Vista. Without the Vista drivers, you'll need to do all of your printing from the Windows XP machine.

3. Windows XP. For Windows XP file and print sharing see the following downloadable Microsoft documents. If you're impatient, it's OK to start with the "Troubleshooting" document first:

Solve : Question about a in home server?

I was wondering if there is a way to put a server in my home to store all my games, SOFTWARE and so forth on. But I want to access it and run them from the server and not from my COMPUTERS? Is this possible to do without installing EVERYTHING on to my computer?
I am just wondering if it is cheaper going this router vs buying a computer that I need so much space and memory to run all my art programs while working. I do already have all 4 computers networked together in the HOUSE and SAVE everything on a extra hard drive on the desktop computer.
But I do not want to have so much istalled on my computer if possible cause I just do not do slow If you share a folder on the server, you can map the it as a drive to the other computers. (navigate to the folder, right click on the shared folder and choose "map network drive". Make sure to choose reconnect on logon. Afterwards, when you install software, choose a custom path and select the mapped drive instead of the program folder. Just remember, you still need a separate install from each computer you will use your software from.

Solve : ADSL Drop Outs?!?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I am having some trouble with the internet connections on 2 seperate machines.

The story so far is that both machines were formated and clean install of XP Home with SP2 and all updates, all done at my place on my internet. Now I set up ONE of the machines at my friends place and his internet keeps dropping out. Originally thought this was a problem with his line or service provider untill I did the second pc with another person and it is doing the same thing dropping out; with a completley different adsl modem and isp.

Both PC's didn't have any updates done to them previously so just wondering if perhaps a windows update is causing the error (I installed every update including the optional software ones). All tcp/ip settings haven't been mucked about with. Any thoughts on this issue would be appreciated, I also understand that this could all be a coincidence however have to wait 2 weeks untill the techs from their internet providers can come take a look.Quote from: bladetek on April 23, 2008, 08:35:20 PM

Now I set up one of the machines at my friends place and his internet keeps dropping out.
1. Current LAN configuration. Is the computer directly connected to the ADSL modem or is there a home router/switch component between them? Is it a wired or wireless connection? Do other computers (Windows SOMETHING?) work fine on your friend's network? Is connection maintained if computer is directly cabled to the ADSL modem?

2. NEED more info on "internet keeps dropping out". What sequence leads up to the drop out? The user logs into Windows, is able to bring up a browser and surf the internet successfully (for how long?). Which browser and version? What messages are displayed if any when it drops out? Anything in the Windows XP event logs?

Are you running a software firewall on the computer?

Try browsing the internet using "Safe Mode with Networking"? (I'm not sure what the security risk is for this, but it would eliminate a lot of extra Windows software).

3. Are you saying these computers used to work well (no drop outs) with Window XP Home (SP?) on those ADSL ISP connections? Thanks for the reply in response to your questions:

1. The computer is connected directly via Ethernet on one and USB on the other machine. The ethernet connected machine is using a wireless router but still drops out whether it is on ethernet or wireless. My laptop also appears to have the same problem when connected via ethernet or wireless to the router (haven't tried my machine with the other USB adsl connection)
2. Both users can log on and use the internet (IE7 is browsing PROGRAM) for different periods, sometimes 10 minutes or sometimes 1 minute before it drops out. Both are running the standard xp firewall.
3. Yes both computers were fine before the format and reinstall with updates, previously one was xp SP1 and the other SP2 but no recent updates.

I tried surfing in safe mode, still the same occurance. The adsl light on the modem appears to go out then back sometimes, haven't noticed it doing it all the time. Both internet providers said that there are no problems with the phone line or their connections in the area.Don't use the USB connection and ethernet connection, use only usb (this means only one computer - that's not good I think) or ethernet: you have many computers? Use a router. A home router (it includes a switch also, so you'll have at least 4 ethernet ports available for computers). You have a wireless router: connect both computers to the router. Using ethernet cable or wireless. These are two seperate machines at different houses's, one is using the ethernet and the other computer is using USB (USB is the only available option on that modem) both suffer from the drop outs however they were not doing it before the format and reinstall/updates.Check the properties of the network adapter at the computer within the desired Local Area Network (LAN) connection to see whether it Auto Negotiates connection speed and mode.

Within Linksys forums, some have resolved their connection problems by manually setting the network adaptor to 10 Mbps (mega bits per second). Not sure whether they're setting full duplex or half-duplex. I would start with full (and then try half, if necessary). Both ends of the ethernet cable path need to agree on speed and mode. If you manually set one, the other should adjust to it.

I'm guessing their ISPs aren't providing 100 Mbps throughput. With ADSL it's probably not greater than 10 Mbps, so DOWNGRADING to 10 Mbps shouldn't be a performance issue.Quote from: bladetek on April 23, 2008, 08:35:20 PM

Is your internet connection also ADSL or is it cable? I'm wondering whether the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) value for those two systems was setup for cable (your internet?) and is now struggling with ADSL.

I can't access some websites ... why?

From: Information on 'Tweaking' your TCP stack

For PPPoE, your MaxMTU should be no more than 1492, to allow space for the 8 byte PPPoE "wrapper", but again, experiment to find the optimal value.. For PPPoE, the stakes are high: if you get MTU wrong, you may not just be sub-optimal, things like UPLOADING, or web pages, may stall, or not work at all!

Do you know if the ADSL connection type is Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE)?

Restart computer, and check again.ok wierd since im STEPPING in a bit late but here goes!

ok so you say its the same no matter which card you use, WIRED or wireless. so throw out the tcp issue since both cards use different tcp connections. its a program pure and simple. you installed an AOL update. try disabling the AOL and use just internet explorer and outlook for your email. my wife gets the same PROBLEM with AOL but without it, it works just fine. try that and then get back to us.So I just got home from a vacation, and I tried the two programs Broni suggested. I'm still having the same exact issue. WinsockXP fix wouldn't work because I have vista.

ghrark - I deleted AOL, and then reinstalled the operating system. Same issues. I can't believe I'm still struggling!!!

Reinstalled, how? Over the top, or clean install?Yes, and if it wasn't a clean install of the operating system, was AOL completely uninstalled? I know from past experience that it can be difficult to completely remove.Clean install. I formated the hard drive.

Perhaps SP1 will help me?I doubt.

Have you ever uninstalled/reinstalled ethernet card driver? Maybe ethernet card is going south...borrow a card from a friend.
Also this WinsockFix should work with Vista: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtmlOpen the properties to your network card. Look for the configure button and than the Advanced tab. In the list you should see something like Media Type. CLICK it and than go to the drop down and pick Auto Select. The vendors name things a little differently so it maybe called something else.

What kind of network card do you have?
broadcom 440x

Solve : Connection Loss After Second Laptop Attempts To Use Unsecured Network?

Well, the cheap and inelegant fix so far is that it's a D-Link router running b STANDARD, so I borrowed my friend's old b standard D-Link PCMCIA PLUGIN wireless card, downloaded the driver, and run off that card...now we coexist on the network just fine...

I"m not completely SATISFIED with this. My next step is to connect to the router VIA ethernet cable, and look at the software settings, as was earlier suggested...

Turn Windows firewall on, and install free AVG antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-editionOkay cool. This AVG Anti-Virus is the best out there? Should I just use the free one? or are the other ones better?I use free AVG personally. It's very good tool. What about ad-aware 2007? or does avg free have spyware utilities too?AVG is only an antivirus program.
As for spywares, I'd recommend:
- Download, and install free ThreatFire: http://www.threatfire.com/, which will give you real-time protection against malwares.
It won't interfere with your antivirus, nor firewall.
- Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
- Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html

Last two are not real-time protection programs, but they're excellent tools for occasional manual scanning.

Thanks Broni. You're the best. I will try these out. Your help was so appreciated. Cheers.Actually Broni, while I'm at it, what are some good registry cleaners that you recommend? For your own good, leave registry cleaners alone. You don't need them, unless it's really necessary for some particular reason.
One of the feww GENERAL cleaners, I may recommend is CCleaner.

Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.

Solve : Router Issues?

Answer»

Hi, quite an odd problem, and i'm a novice so bare with me.

I recently bought a Belkin G Plus MIMO Router, the problem was that I used to get disconnected from Windows Live Messenger and some websites, game etc. randomly, the CONNECTION would drop for long enough for me to get disconnected then it would pick back up again.

I called up Belkin support line, and the guy set some channels and stuff. He asked me to wire my system up and leave out the router, I did and my broadband wouldn't connect at all.

The weird thing is if I configure my router to a 'Static IP' I never get disconnected, until a few weeks in, when the router totally crashes and I have to reset it!

Weird :S? Anyone got any ideas? Is it faulty?

I believe some ISP PROVIDERS track the MAC address of the computer or router/switch they're connected to. If you switch out the box, you either have to clone the old MAC address or call them to record your new ONE. However, I don't have a ready reference for this opinion.Quote from: Hoax.dc on April 22, 2008, 02:41:21 PM

Unless you're paying the ISP for a "static" IP Address, they may change it at any time. Start a log file of your internet address recording the IP address, date, and time when checked. Perhaps you'll be able to correlate your "crashes" with the changes.

Easy way to retrieve current internet address is to access http://www.whatismyip.com/No broni, dahlarbear is RIGHT. Maybe the ISP equipment memorizes the MAC address of the computer/router connected to it, and for another computer/router to work you need to clone the MAC address or restart the ISP equipment.Your both right! Some ISP do it one way and than some do it the other way.

What ISP do you have?

And what plan did you sign up with?

I really need help!! Yesterday my wireless started playing up and i got cut off a few times, then yesterday it cut me off for ages, I've checked that the wireless is on and it is working as my brothers laptop can get online, but for some reason mine won't, any suggestions?!You may try another wireless card. You may try to see if you can CONNECT the laptops in an "ad-hoc" configuration (try to connect the laptops with ad-hoc mode first).
What do you mean by "your brother laptop can go online" and your doesn't?

What is the content of the file ipcfg.txt (obtained like that: Start->run->ipconfig /all >c:\ipcfg.txt) from both your brother's laptop and yours?Thank you for replying, bt i'm having difficulty in understand what you mean, please may you wxplain in more simplar terms, Thank youSimpler terms... If we only knew how... Which part? Ad-hoc or ipconfig?

An "ad-hoc" configuration permits wireless communication without an "ACCESS point".

How to rectify this problem? The following Microsoft documents (downloads) are excellent resources for understanding and troubleshooting Windows XP file and printer sharing:
File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows
Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP

If you're impatient, start with the second document.

While your description of the symptom (error message) is superb, you've provided no background information. For instance:

o What are you trying to do? (access shared file or printer?)
o How? (using Start-Run dialog box and UNC notation?)
o What is the relevant physical network configuration (WIRED or wireless?) Using peer-to-peer "workgroup" or client-server "domain"?
o What network protocol are you using? (TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NETBUI)
o What operating systems and service packs are involved (Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP PROFESSIONAL; Original, Service Pack 1, Service Pack 2)
o What type of file sharing have you selected ("Shared Documents" folder, "Simple" file sharing, or "Advanced" file sharing)

You can read the reference material, provide more information, or both. It's your choice.

Solve : Local Area Connection has vanished?

Answer»

I have a workstation with Win XP (sp2) and the Local Area Connection is gone. I ran the setup wizard to create a new one, and it finishes without reporting an error, but nothing appears in the Network Connections window, and there is no connection. I checked the following:

All cables/connections (replaced them)
Lights on the card (all solid green)
Diagnostics for card (all "pass")
Hardware configuration (functioning PROPERLY; driver is updated)

I ran the setup wizard many times, but the result is nothing. If I shell out to DOS I can't ping anyplace on the network and there is no IP address for this computer.

Any suggestions? What am I missing?

Tx!hmm.
first do you get your internet through ur LAN if so. then just try going to Internet Explorer or watever web browser u use and start it, reply back if you can access the internet.

"and there is no IP address for this computer."

now about this. if your LAN ISNT connected to the internet there wouldnt be a IP address.I have internet access on the other computers on the LAN, but obviously not this one. I tried pinging the gateway and it won't respond of course. This computer was working fine on the network 2 days ago. I'm thinking the network card suddenly went bad, but the diagnostics said it was o.k. so it seems like that isn't the problem.do you have a firewall on your computer?Quote from: macdad- on March 21, 2008, 03:51:09 PM

That's UTTER rubbish!

A Windows BASED LAN works on TCP/IP...therefore all computers will have an IP, irrespective of internet connection!

Try popping the XP CD in, and running:

sfc /scannow

It's like doing a repair install, but easier.

Then try making the network connections again.Quote from: williamholab on March 22, 2008, 05:06:52 AM

Solve : wireless connectivity problem using 2 sony vaio laptops?

Answer»

hello!
i have a wireless network at home set up, that was previously working using a dell laptop running XP and a sony vaio using vista... we recently upgraded the dell xp to another sony vaio and are having problems with the wireless connection. the spec are as follows...

ONE (the new one) is a sony vaio vgn-nr11z/s, with a t7250 dual core 2GHz, 2GB Ram, with 802.11a/b/g wlan built in, the second computer is similar, a sony vaio vgn-c2s 1.66GHz dual core with 1GB ram and the same wireless card. i hope this is enough specs please LET me know if its not....i try but im not as good as id like to be!

we have a simple speedtouch wireless router box and all the computers have been connected to it, the problem seems to be that when the newer computer is connected to the network the second vaio can not find any wireless networks. occasionally when the new vaio is turned off the second will connect to a network but this is only occasionally and does not stay connected while the newer model is turned on.

i have tried various SETTINGS in the networking and sharing centre and both have the correct passcode (WEP?) entered and the same settings are being used on both computers, i.e. network discovery is on, private home network is default, it just seems that the second computer is being overridden by the new one. this is really becoming a nusiance and i would greatly appreciate any tips or ideas as to why its not working! i have used the vista help but it seems to simply suggest that we are not close enough to the router when we are right next to it!

sorry for the marathon of a first post, i hope someone out there can spare the TIME to sift through and spare their ideas!!!! (also if there is any further information i can include to help the problem be solved let me know!)

thank you in advance

Solve : Security against hacking a Parallel port?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
at work I want to connect a Fax machine to a PC using the Parallel port so that I don't need to print off faxes before sending them to save paper and allow other people further away to send faxes without actually having to walk all the way to the fax machine.

My IT dept is causing me problems however,
they have told me that they have an old policy against it because it is apparently POSSIBLE to use the fax machines phone line to hack into the computer through the parallel port.

Computer security and hacking isn't really something I have ever dealt with before but I am sure there must be some way to try and prevent this, would it be as simple as installing a firewall on that PC? or would a more complicated solution be required?

Jon SmithThat's the strangest thing I've ever heard. While it would *possible* to hack a pc through a fax machine on a parallel port, it would almost as easy to hack a computer through the power lines. (I'm exaggerating a little )
The risk of hooking up a fax machine to a computer is actually much lower than connecting to the internet via dialup modem. Firewall companies don't even make firewall software for the parallel port because of the extremely low risk it has.
It sounds like either your IT dept is full of a bunch of newbies, or you work in a small company that can't afford real IT.
There's no real risk.michaewlewis, just because we don't use faxes so much it doesn't mean they are not a security threat. I didn't search about, but I think the problem is real. Jon_Smith, neither I or michaewlewis know a solution for your problem, unfortunately.

I don't understand exactly why do you need a fax to send/receive faxes... A scanner and a fax-to-mail service won't do?I didn't COMMENT about whether it is a threat. Anything can be a threat to network security. Whether it is a risk is another thing. If the network has an internet connection, a fax machine should be the least of their worries.I completely agree with you michaewlewis I think its stupid but I work the NHS (National Health Service in the UK) and they are very awkward about security because of patient confidentiality and all that, and although we are a very large company, we still have a rubbish IT dept, half of me thinks that they just told me this to fob me off because it wasn't something they usually do and they dont like to step out of the box.

Thanks anyway guysWould anyone be able to direct me to any hard evidence of the difficultly of hacking a PARRALLEL port so that I could present it to my supierors in an effort to convince them that it won't compromise the security of our network, or at least not any more so than having an internet connection?

Jon SmithWhy not try to sell them on FAX software? HOOK a modem up inside your computer and than load some off the self FAX software. This way you have no problem with the parallel port.
I searched using several different terms for anything about fax security and hacking parallel ports and the most I came up with is that it's fairly common to forge faxes to make someone think another person sent the fax. There was even one guy in europe that was freed from prison because of a forged fax.
But as far as hacking the actual fax machine and breaking into a network..... I didn't find anything about that.Quote from: Spoiler on April 15, 2008, 09:07:00 AM

Why not try to sell them on FAX software? Hook a modem up inside your computer and than load some off the self FAX software. This way you have no problem with the parallel port.

Actually, a modem would be easier to hack than a fax hooked up via parallel port...I don't know anything about hacking a parallel port. But it is possible.

I repeat my question: a scanner, a printer and a fax to mail service don't solve the problem?

a. Make/Model Number of this "DSL based modem/router"
b. Operating System of computer using wireless connection; e.g. Windows XP (Home Edition or Professional), Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), SP2, SP3.

2. Does the wireless computer have a wired NIC you could use to see if an IP address is assigned when it's directly wired to the modem/router?So you got a new DSL router I got that. You did not make any changes to the wireless computer as far as settings for the wireless go, am I right? Did, you setup the new router? I didnt change the wireless settings. Yes the new router was set up. No,the passkey isnt the same as the other router. Its a different network name and different passkey

And this is the passkey. > 18019BDB49 < the first "zero" has a slash thru it.Ive tried it with upper and low case letters. Ive tried that zero as a zero and as the letter o.

none work. For those following/working this post, here is link to 54 Mbps Wireless DSL Gateway GT704-WG As Marco pointed out, you need to use the same parameter values on both ends of the wireless link (access point at gateway and wireless NIC adapter on Vista PC); e.g. "System Set Identifier" (SSID), "Encryption Method" (None/Off, WEP, WPA, WPA2), Encryption Key Value(s).

The Vista machine also needs valid TCP/IP configuration values for your network. This would include "IP Address", "Subnet Mask", "Gateway Address", "DNS Address(es)". These can be set manually within Vista or automatically using the DHCP server built into your wireless gateway (if Vista wireless adapter connection is configured for automatic assignment).

It would be best to disable all security on the wireless link until you successfully connect, then add security one piece at a time until you achieve the security level you wish. Specifically start with your wireless encryption set to "None" or disabled on both the access point and the wireless NIC on your Vista machine. I would also start with the Vista firewall off or disabled. At any rate you should not be using WEP (either 64-bit or 128-bit). It is weak security. You should be using the strongest security (encryption method) that all of your wireless equipment supports. This would be either WPA or WPA2. See the "Wireless Network Security" link below for tips on securing the wireless network.

The User Manual for your wireless gateway is well written. You should pay particular attention to:

Page 42 - DHCP Server

Solve : Home and Office Internet Connection?

Answer»

I have two internet connections for my laptop, one in the office and one at home. In the office I use a Wlan connection (Intel Pro Wireless) and at home a WAN miniport (PPPoE).

Both connections work, but the annoying thing is that in Outlook Express I always have to SWITCH the POP3 server (incoming mail) to 127.0.0.1, otherwise I cant receive mail.

Is there an option for the computer to detect upon LOGON which internet connection I am using? Or another automated way for the laptop to recognize if it is a wireless or cable connection?is noone able to reply... I don't believe it is possible to configure OE based on where you're at.
What I don't understand though is why you're pointing the incoming mail server at 127.0.0.1. That is the loopback ADDRESS. Basically you're telling OE that the email server is on the computer itself instead of on an external server. The computer automatically CONFIGURES it to 127.0.0.1 - probably upon connection to the WLAN in the office. That is a nuisance, as at home this needs changing. There is no mail server/web mail server to connect to at all, all is done locally through the internet.

Maybe the only solution is to do a manual switch of email accounts, i.e. leave the work email account and make another identical one for the home cable conifguration

Any other solutions?

Solve : friend's laptop?

Answer»

My wife is in nursing school and one of her friends bought a used laptop (Toshiba) and was having problems getting on the net. So, she asked my wife if I would LOOK at it for her. I am relatively new to this networking, right now. It is to be my degree, but I have not took any networking classes yet.

I bought a Linksys wireless router about a yr ago and after some HELP from Linksys finally got it up and going. My main PC where the router is at is an HP a1710n RUNNING VISTA, my other 2 PCS in the house are a desktop in my son's room and my laptop, both running XP. My wife's friend DIANE's laptop is a Toshiba running XP. It has a Linksys wireless card (VER #3) that came with it. I tried the USB fd that has the network setup on it like I had to on my 2 PCs. But when I run it on Dianes, it has an error #678. I tried re-entering the IP address in the prompt window, and it says it can't do this unless it is connected. I have tried everything that I know with no luck. What am I missing? I forgot to say that on the taskbar, it is showing my network with excellent signal. But will not connect to the net.Her laptop has wireless started?
It sees your wireless network?
Did you do any special settings, like disabling broadcast SSID? (I don't understand if her computer connects to your wireless network).yeah, her laptop shows that it is receiving the network signal on the taskbar. I dont know SSID?

Solve : The internet on my computer won't connect to anything but internet explorer?

Answer»

The internet on my computer will only connect to internet explorer. It won't connect to programs like iTunes(the music store), limewire, firefox, etc. I've gone through my computer several times looking for something that might be blocking it and haven't found anything. I don't think it's a FIREWALL, I've checked that. Of course I'm not 100% sure what I'm looking for.
And I have a cable connection if that makes a difference. (I've checked the box and it appears to be working)What Windows version? It's Windows XPDisable your firewall for a time being, and try to use Itunes, or Limewire.I already disabled it. That was PRETTY much the first thing I tried. I have no idea whats wrong.Does your IE browse with normal speed, or it's slow? Any troubles with opening some pages?
What happens when you open Limewire, Itunes?IE is running as well as it alway has.
When I try to open the itunes store it says: iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. The network connection was refused. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is ACTIVE, then try again.

When I try to open limewire it says: Your machine does not appear to have an active internet connection or a firewall is blocking limewire from accessing the internet. Limewire will automatically keep trying to connect you to the network unless you select "Disconnect" from the file menu.
For Itunes, check if your settings are same, as here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304468Dangit, DIDNT work. Don't worry. We just made first step.
Did you have that setting already set to Automatic?
Do me a favor. Using IE, go to: https://webassign.net/login.html
and tell me, if IE let you go there. You don't have to read anything there. I just want to know, if you have an access to that site.Nope, it wasn't already set, now it is though
The website worked tooOK, then...
Try Itunes now, and let me know...itunes is still coming up with the same messageThat's OK.
Next step.
Open Firefox, CLICK Tools>Options, click Advanced, click Network tab, click Settings button.
Make sure, that you have it set to "Auto-detect...".
Restart Firefox, and see if it works.I selcted the auto-detect but it still won't work.

thank you for helping me by the way!!

Solve : "Losing Key Packets"?

Answer»

Hey all.

I really didn't know where to put this, it's a mix of game/networking.

But, hear me out please

Recently I have been experiencing kicks from CoD4 servers due to punkbuster's message "Losing Key Packets", I searched around the internet and did everything people told me to do..update PB/Manually update PB/Reinstall it/ CHECK Firewall/ and on and on. I was then pointed in the direction it COULD either be my IPS's fault or my own.

So... I decided to use PingPlotter to trace a server to see where I was losing the packets, problem is, I don't really know how to interpret the graph to tell if its my ISPs fault or not.

as it shows, at hop 10 I get a 100% packet loss, which causes kicks in online gaming.

My question again - Is it my fault - or my ISPs?

or

Is this even the way to be going to solve my packet problem? I'm really impared when it comes to stuff like this.

I can answer any questions if necessary.

Thanks
-Mike

What happens when you ping 127.0.0.1 and the internal address given by the router?

Alan <>< There are servers that don't respond to traceroute (or similar, like tracert in windows) or ping commands. It does not matter if that server (router, gateway) does not respond to you, he is still receiving and routing your packets. It is important to check if the game servers receive your messages.

I don't know what is PB.

Sorry, but could you guys explain your questions a little more? =|

thanks
-MikeHop 10 in your previous presentation has no problems, it's not causing any packet drop (or any packet losing, as you want to say).

I can't tell you anything about your ISP, if they filter or limit some network transfers. I don't know. From your traceroute it SEEMS everything works fine.

Do you use a wireless router? Your computer is connected directly to an outside box, is connected to something in your house? ISP gave you an equipment when they came and installed the cable?I have been having a similar problem. I checked all lan and wlan devices. Same stuff. I locked down my lan. Same stuff.. I changed routers/Wifi .. Same stuff. I did some hacking and came up with it appears to be someone trying to hack my Wifi Radio.. I called my wifi broadband provider and they confirmed and upgraded the software on my Radio (the one on my roof) and this appears to have slowed the packet loss!? Any other Ideas from anyone?Don't use wireless for online gaming would be my best advice.
Even when you have perfect connection conditions it is not uncommon for wireless networks to drop a few packets every now and then. This isn't noticeable during online browsing since the browser will simply wait while the packets are resent.
Real time online games can't wait for dropped packets to be resent so here you will either experience a lag or a disconnection.

Solve : Better network method?

Answer»

What is the better network method?
i thnk wired since you get better speed and better security. It depends, there are different situations, HENCE different solutions.
Where is the possibility to avoid wireless networks, I prefer wired networks.dito, better speed and better security.I need to speed with security so i prefer Wired NetworkI find, based on speed tests, that I can get the same speed via wireless connection that I can from wired. At least, this is what I've experienced at home, using a D-Link DI-524 router.

So, I see security as the main point here. However, I'm under the impression speed may also be better for many users; I guess it just depends on your equipment. well now more and more home networks a based upon 100BaseT speeds.Quote from: soybean on March 21, 2008, 10:47:08 AM

I'm sorry, I have to strongly disagree. When you enable the security options for the wireless mode, your speed will dramatically drop. Without secure connection I don't recommend to anybody to use a wireless network. Wired connection, at 100 Mbps, is faster than any home consumer wireless network. Of course, if the switch/router is a "break", is too SLOW at FORWARDING packets inside your LAN, then maybe yes, the wired and wireless experience may be the same. But otherwise, the wireless LAN is far slower than the wired LAN.

We don't talk about WAN connections here. Because ussually WANs connections are far slower than LAN. In a LAN environment the normal (theoretical) speed is at least 10 Mbps (the actual normal speed is 100 Mbps); for a WAN connection we start talking from dial-up speeds (modems) of 33 Kbps (or less) and increasing towards Mbps. You may have a connection of 512 Kbps or more (ADSL, fiber optic), let's say a few Mbps per second, but most usually you will have a slower WAN connection than your LAN connection. In this case the bottleneck will be the WAN connection, and there will be no difference if we connect to 512 Kbps WAN from a LAN where we have a 11 Mbps wireless connection or a 100 Mbps wired connection.

The poll misses the option: "It depends on the case". Not all the time the wired connection is better than the wireless connection. They solve different CASES: I don't see anyone moving a wired connection throughout his house. Here wireless is better, you just grab your laptop, go in bedroom and voila, network connection available. Gee, let's go to kitchen; network connection "follows" us With wired... Plug the cable, unplug the cable, move the cable, take care of the cable, don't step on the cable, don't cut the cable, keep away the little dog (or cat) from the cable or he will try his teeth on etcQuote

yes thats the only drawback on a wired network.I say wired network is the best for most situations.
Where I work we use gigabit connections for each plant and fiber to connect them together. If we were to use wireless, we would get a max data transfer rate of 11mbps since each site is several miles apart and they don't have many options for anything faster at those distances.
However, we also rely on wireless so that the plant operators can take a pen tablet out into the plant and make changes on the spot. Can you image them dragging a 300' ethernet cable behind them to do that?

Solve : Strange port problem?

Answer»

I have this problem, I've forwarded my port in my router, I've OPENED the port in COMODO, but still it happens. When I do the port check for uTorrent, it passes half the time. Whenever this happens, the total download speed in uTorrent is limited to 30 kB/s. I'm using a US Robotics USR8054 router, a TrendNET TEW-444UB USB wireless adapter, and a Speedstream 5200 modem. I've forwarded the port in the router, opened the port in the FIREWALL of the router, and opened the port in Comodo. I've also tried disabling Comodo and changing the port but nothing helps. This doesn't happen all the time, but it is very irritating when it does.I would suspect the router.
You could check if a firmware update is available for it.
Before attempting an update be sure to check what the update actually does. If the changes doesn't sound like they could fix your problem it is probably not worth updating.
Also be sure to read the instructions on firmware updating carefully. Doing it wrong could turn your router in to a pretty expensive paper weight.I've had the LATEST firmware for the router for at least 2 years now, they haven't released anything new.Try bypassing the router and connect directly to the modem... the test should tell you whether the router is at fault or not.
