Solve : Belkin Wireless Issues?

Answer»

Okay. So, let me start off by letting you know that I have little patience (I need to work on this, I know) and when I GET impatient, I get frusterated and irritable. So, if at any TIME suring this post I seem particularly negative or angry... well, there you go.

So, in our house, we have a Belkin wireless router for our internet. On one particular computer, which happens to be MY computer, it just kind of decided not to work yesterday and I have been unable to change its mind. I haven't done anything, it just gave up. I tried restarting the router, nothing. On the netwrok setup THING, it shows that I have full connection strength and have the correct security info and whatnot. But past that, nothing. I don't know how to fix it. Like I SAID, I haven't done ANYTHING different since it was last working, and my computer knowledge is fairly basic. I am going absolutely insane here. I have no clue what to do.Welcome to the CH forums belleanomalie.
What version of Windows are you using?
Could you provide us with the specifications or the make and model of the computer?

Solve : Question about wireless router/network?

Answer»

Hi, I've recently decided to buy a wireless router so my fiancee and I can CONNECT to the internet with our laptops without having the cables RUNNING all over the apartment (I currently have a standard router). However, I also have a desktop PC that does not have a wireless adapter or card to go with it. Are there wireless routers which also allow for direct, 'wireful' connections to them in addition to wireless connections, or will I just have to fork out the money to buy a wireless USB adapter or card for my desktop as well? Or can I split the signal coming from the cable modem in some other way?

Thanks for your help! Most wireless routers I've seen have the antennas for wireless TRANSMISSION, and usually four ethernet ports for connecting ethernet cables. I've personally MIXED wired and wireless connections on the same LAN (Local Area Network).

Solve : help getting my connection?

Answer»

No problem sure your probaly sick of trying to show me how to do this but do think if I BOUGHT a windows upgrade it would fix the problem? if so about how much do those cost?Quote

sure your probaly sick of trying to show me how to do this
Don't worry about it.
You want to buy an upgrade for which computer?Sorry I have been busy at work and the kids have been runnin me around, but I was thinking my laptop, since it's so naked anyways what would it cost?Let me put THINGS together. Your laptop is with Windows ME, and you want to go to at least Windows 2000?
If this is correct, we'' need your laptop specs. What is the brand, and model of your laptop? Were there any hardware changes to it, or it has original configuratuion? The laptop has Windows 2000 Prof, and I want to upgrade it now can I buy any windows upgrade like if I wanted 98 instead of 2000, or do I need to stick with what I have. The laptop is an old Gateway SOLO 5300, not sure what else you need to know so I will keep checking for your response. Why would you want to go from Win 2000 to Win 98? Win 2000 is much better OS.Being a chef and not a computer guy I listen to what I have heard and someone told me that 98 was better, or that 2000 had alot of problems on it. so what should I do?You stay with Win 2000. It must be the most stable Operation System ever built. I still use it.cool, I will let you know how it WORKS out. Funny how you always get different reviews of product, thats why I like to ask a few people before I buy. Now will the upgrade take care of Internet Exploror, as I need 5.5 or above or is that different? When you run Win 2000 updates, it should upgrade IE to version 6. If not, you can always DOWNLOAD it manually.

Solve : Wireless Network Troubles... WHY CAN'T THIS BE EASIER?

Answer»

Hello All,

I need a how to or something to make Win XP wireless networking simple.

Here is my problem:

Until now I've had a wireless network based on my D-Link Wireless Router yet I never needed file sharing. Yesterday I wanted to run an application that needed this so I decided to run the set-up. So I ran the Wireless Network app on Win XP on three computers and configured my Wifi router. So I can get online perfectly. After that I ran the home network wizard as suggested on a post i found online.

Thus followed everything to the t. The problem is that I can't see the network on any of the set-up computers. I've looked all over the Network Places and nothing. I've pinged the computers and they seem to all be working fine. Also when I run \\IPADDYOFOTHER COMPUTER - ok I can look into the computers but they aren't all part of a network, which is what I need. What am I doing wrong.

My setup is as follows
2 Notebook computers with WinXP Home
1 Desktop w/ wifi card with WinXP Pro
1 DLink Router

Any ideas? Need Extra info.. let me knowI suggest you treat your problem as two separate issues. The first is configuring a Local Area Network (LAN) with file sharing. The second is configuring the wireless communication links.

If possible, set up a "wired" LAN that performs as desired before trying to integrate the wireless links into your LAN. HOPEFULLY you could do this with the desktop computer, one or both of the notebooks, and the wireless router. Does the wireless router have four hard wired LAN ports that function as a switch?

While they don't address the wireless component of your problem, The following Microsoft DOCUMENTS (downloads) are excellent resources for understanding and troubleshooting Windows XP file and printer sharing:
File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows
Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP

There's quite a bit of redundant information, so you may want to start with the second document.

Basically, I'm not a fan of "wizards". When they work, you're very happy. When they don't work, you're very unhappy (and don't have a clue how to proceed). Setup the file sharing manually. The documents above essentially provide a tutorial to do that.Quote from: lefloresg80 on March 25, 2008, 09:57:23 PM

You may have to enable the "computer BROWSER" service on at least one of the Windows XP machines. The following microsoft documents are great resources for this issue:

Troubleshooting Computer Browsing on SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows
Computer Browsing for SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows

The following quote is from the first link above:

Quote
Cannot See All of the Server Computers on the Network (Successful Network Connectivity)

When you cannot see all of the server computers on the network in My Network Places or Network Neighborhood, the solution depends on whether you have successful network connectivity.

To check whether you have basic network connectivity from the BROWSE client to the missing server computer, do the following:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In Open, type \\ComputerName (in which ComputerName is the name of the missing server computer), and then press ENTER.

If you get a window that displays the SHARED resources of the missing server computer, then you have basic network connectivity to the missing server computer. If you get an error message stating that the network path was not found, then there is a problem with basic network connectivity to the missing server computer.

If you have successful network connectivity to the missing server computer but you do not see it in the workgroup window, then it could be due to one of the following:

o The missing computers are configured with a different workgroup name
o The browse servers do not yet have all the computers in their browse lists
o The missing computers are not on the same physical network segment

Solve : Splitting Broadband connection?

Answer»

Hi everyone, My Fraternity is thinking about getting our own cable internet service rather than use the schools. My question is: Can you split a 6 meg broadband connection 20 ways and still maintain decent service per person? Just to be sure assume that there may be 18 of the 20 on at a GIVEN time. some downloading or playing xbox live and so on.

also.. assuming this is possible.. what methods would you recommend to split the signal.

(please FORGIVE an misuse of TERMINOLOGY, I'm not that familiar with networking etc...)

Thank you!!I would say no, you will need more than a 6 mbit connection.
For decent speeds assuming some will want to play online and download I would say you need at least 20 mbit.
You will also need some pretty serious networking equipment to split the connection between 20 or more computers. Especially considering you probably will want to distribute the bandwidth fairly among those connected. You will most likely need to invest in an enterprise grade ROUTER/switch. Are those 6 Mbps guaranteed or it is an explanation in which they say "up to 6 Mbps"?
If you can afford more than 6 Mbps it would be better. Are you sure that sometime there will be 18 users connected to the internet?

I agree with Deerpark regarding the quality of the router - pay attention, the router has to deal with many connexions, it has to be a very good product (NOT a "for home" router, if more than 10 people will connect at the same time). Thanks for all your help guys. we were deciding between getting a single service or a small BUSINESS package for my fraternity. It was really just to save a couple bucks if we were able to split the "up to 6mbps" service enough ways.. I doubted it would work and my suspicions were correct. so we actually got a decent deal for a small business package that will run 25 computers. I thank both of you for your help.. And i believe the package comes with a business grade router... or else we have a guy that updates networks in businesses like this and he can get us one cheap.

Thanks again guys!!

Solve : Printer won't print due to VPN...Can anyone help??

Answer»

We have been using a 2-computer network in our home office with no problem. RECENTLY we started getting the FOLLOWING message:

"The print spooler was unable to connect to your printer. This can be caused by your printer being turned off, the cable being unplugged, or being connected to a VPN, which will BLOCK your access to your local network. Your document will print when the printer becomes available."

Documents selected to print from either computer remain in queu until the wireless laptop is shut down. How do I go back to printing while my laptop is on? I'd appreciate any suggestions since I'm a novice and it is rather annoying.

Thank you! What kind of network do you have? Wired only, wireless only, wired and wireless? What is the network connection device (hub, switch, router/switch)?

What operating system(s) are involved? Windows XP Home or Professional? Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), SP2, or SP3?

Are there software firewalls enabled on each computer?

How is the printer connected? Wired or wireless? Is it connected directly to a host computer port (serial, parallel, or USB); a network connection device (hub, switch); or a hardware print server device?

What is the printer make and model? Is it an HP printer? Perhaps you should check manufacturer's web site to verify your printer "driver" is up to date for your operating system(s).

If you google on the exact substring "The print spooler was unable to connect to your printer", you'll find this is or was a common problem. Lots of wild theories and solutions are presented. I trust some sources, e.g. HP or annoyances.org, more than OTHERS.

Solve : Unable to locate a certificate?

Answer»

Help. Situation. I have a Linksys router connected to the internet of which I can successfully connect via my host computer. I have a WIRELESS connection set up from my laptop. Compaq, Presario running XP. When I attempt to connect to the network, I receive the following message. "wireless Network Connection"

"WINDOWS was unable to find a CERTIFICATE to log you on to the network "Name of my network"

I have completely removed all my wireless connections from the Wireless network WINDOW , then re-populated the networks in range via "view Wireless Networks", it locates my network (Firenet1106), but never accquires a network address and I get the same certificate message above. The properties are: WPA, TKIP,

I also have a wireless connection set up from another laptop (IMAC) of which it connects successfully. No problems.

Thanks for your help. I'll be ready to respond if you need more information. Most answers on the internet believe this is caused by "mismatch" in wireless security settings between "router" and "client" machine. Following is sample answer

Not clear whether you compared your settings on problem laptop with those of the working laptop and router.

Solve : How can I link another computer directly to mine to transfer files.?

Answer»

I have an old computer with some very important files that I need. The old computer does not have cd burner, it only has a floppy drive and cd rom, my new computer does not have floppy drive but a cd rom and dvd burner. I was THINKING I could somehow link the old computer to my new one through a network cable via their network cable ports. When I did that I only saw my network not the old computer. Is there ANOTHER WAY to link these two computers together.Do you wish to connect the two computers directly to each other or are they going to be connected via a hub/switch/router/etc?
What operating systems are each computer running?1. You may "directly" connect two computers together using any one of the following interfaces:

a. Serial Port -> Serial Port using null-modem serial cable.

b. Parallel Port -> Parallel Port using parallel LapLink cable.

c.. infrared port -> infrared port. Don't ask... I'm just a mere mortal...

d. NIC RJ-45 port -> NIC RJ-45 port using ethernet "crossover" cable.

Methods "a" and "b" above are known as a "Direct Cable Connection" and should be available on your operating system; but you might have to go to "Add/Remove Programs" on your "Control Panel" and add the necessary utilities from your Windows XP Setup Files.

On my old Windows 98 system, from "Add/Remove Programs" I go to the "Windows Setup" tab, select the "Communications" category of utilities, left CLICK on "Details" button and check "Direct Cable Connection" item and then OK all the way out to add to system. Your Windows XP system probably has something similiar if it is not already installed. Check to see if it is already on your "Start Menu". Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Direct Cable Connection. Windows "Help" should have some information on it.

Direct Cable Connection is designed to be one-way, to transfer files "from" one computer to another; not both ways. If you're foolish enough to attempt the Direct Cable Connection (which does work), you're on your own.

Simplest and best option is to use the Network adapter RJ-45 ports (NIC) using either method "d" above or "2" below. That is two way interface. There's nothing special to transferring files this way, you just have to enable File sharing on the "source" computer and perhaps enter a valid username/password that exists on the "source" computer.

2. Or as "Deerpark" was working up to, you can use ethernet "straight" cable if you put a hub/switch/router between the two computers.Quote from: special-fx on November 21, 2007, 12:02:32 PM

I was thinking I could somehow link the old computer to my new one through a network cable via their network cable ports. When I did that I only saw my network not the old computer. Is there another way to link these two computers together.

1. Another common method of transferring "files" is to use a USB Flash Drive. Your ability to do this would depend UPON how "old' the computer is and what operating system it is running. Most computers still in use support these devices. If the operating system is Windows 98/98SE, you would have to ensure there are downloadable drivers available for whatever flash drive you might use. The packaging for flash drive or manufacturer's web site should say. There are also some DOS drivers available but that's a little more difficult to setup (I've never done it). If the operating system is Windows ME or newer (Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista); the operating system provides generic drivers that should work.

2. That said, your best option is to connect the two computers together using an ethernet cable. Use "crossover" cable if direct from one computer to the other. Use "straight" cable if connecting computers via hub/switch/router.

3. See the following article "You cannot access shared files and folders or browse computers in the workgroup with Windows XP":

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318030

4. The following Microsoft documents may be helpful (or give you a headache). The "Truth" is out there. Don't give up.

You can also use USB data tranfer cable:

You mentioned that you already connected the computers via network cable. Are you sure about that you used a crossover cable to connect the PCs? If you are sure about that then, do this following in both PCs

Right click on My network Place ---->Properties ------>Right Click on Local Area Connection---->Select the Tickmark for Client for Microsoft networks, File and Printer Sharing for MS network, and Internet protocol (TCP/IP) (Under General Tab) ---->Then Select Internet protocol (TCP/IP)---->Click Properties---->

In The Old PC-
Tick use the following IP Address
IP Address: 10.0.0.1
Subnet Mask:255.0.0.0
Default Gateway- Nil
Preferred Dns Server-127.0.0.0
Alternate DNS server- Nil

Click Ok
Click Ok

In The New PC-
Tick use the following IP Address
IP Address: 10.0.0.2
Subnet Mask:255.0.0.0
Default Gateway- Nil
Preferred Dns Server-127.0.0.0
Alternate DNS server- Nil

Click OK
Click OK

Restart The Both PCs

Probably now you can see the both PCs in the network..

If you want to copy/access a folder from Old computer Right click on the folder -----> Properties---->Select Sharing Tab----->Click Share this folder---> OK
Then go to the new computer and click start----> run--->Type \\10.0.0.1--> OK

Now hopefully you will be able to access your old computer's file in the new computer

Solve : Safecom wireless router?

Answer»

Did you reset the ROUTER?
Yep, made no difference as far as I can tell.
Thr manual SAID 5 or more seconds on the reset button to restore factory settings. I gave it 30 to be sure!while your computer is connected to the router do a
ipconfig /release
When it's done do a
ipconfig /renew

Are you able to get an ip?
Connected to the PC with the modem on board too, or straight through PC---Router?OK, funny story.
I set up the router, and left it for about 15 minutes while I went out.
Came back in and managed to access the router status page, which I couldnt do before for some strange reason.
The router had a reboot option, which I hadnt tried before, so I thought what the *censored*, it cant make it any worse.
Lo and behold, the router is now fully working, and found ALL the neccessary settings ITSELF.
I just opted for google, and it worked, and its still up and running as I write this post!
I think ill put it down to one of lifes great mysteries, like what women are thinking!!

Thankyou VERY MUCH for all your assistance and support, the router WOULD have been stomped long before now if I hadnt had a resource like this to call upon.

Sorry I posed such an awkward question!

AllanHehe networking can be a strange beast at times... but I'm glad to hear it is finally working.Im trying to set up my wii now, and am struggling to get some sort of update it needs.
Done some mooching around, and the Nintendo website has suggested changing the channel the router broadcasts on.
Am I able to do this without it interupting the set up?Yep, changing the channel WiFi broadcasts on shouldn't affect your setup.

The more the better!!!!

If not DL the newest most popular torrent of the file you want.

You may also have to enable your listen port

which your torrent software will tell you in options or on the bottom toolbar somewhere.

Then go to www.portforward.com to find out how to activate it via your router. *This will only make it download faster * to get it started you will need a popular torrent.

ONE WITH LOTS OF SEEDS /PEERS/ LEECHES.

Also check that your firwall is allowing your p2p program (torrent software) to access the net.

Solve : Networking Windows with Linux?

Answer»

I have three computers NETWORKED together, A Windows Vista system, a win 2000 system, and a dual boot system with win XP SP2, and Edubuntu 7.10. When they are all in windows they talk to each other WITHOUT a problem. However, I am having trouble getting the computers to talk when Linux is in the mix. Both Vista and Win 2000 show the Linux computer in the network view, but when I click on the icon, neither ONE will allow me to connect. (I get a "no network connection" error message). The Linux machine can see and access the Vista machine, (including being able to use the attached printer) however, it can only see, but not access the Win 2000 computer. It keeps asking me to log in, (I have the log in disabled on it, but it still wants a password.) The computers are connected VIA a D-Link DI-604 router.

I get the same result whether or not the firewalls are enabled.

Solve : Setting Up My First Network?

Answer»
I have never set up a network before. But now I find I have to for the first time.

My Cam and my Printer are both unusable with Vista. But I have an idea for a solution. I put my old computer on a network. I know that this is HWO they use printers at work. I assume I can do the same at home. Can I do the same sort of thing with my cam?

For the printer, here are my results from the printer's manufacturer:
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h292/Athono/lexmark.jpg

I am sure I can set up the printer via a network but I do not know how to go about doing this. How does one set up a network?

For the cam, here my results from looking for answers from the cam's manufacturer
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h292/Athono/cam.jpg

I found a program that allows me to use the cam over a network. This http://www.webcamxp.com/home.aspx is way cool.

Now the first thing to do is to set up a network. The Vista Online Help had a lot of information I did not need because already I have two machines connected to the internet by way of a router. It seems difficult to go through this information and know what I do need to do and what I do not need to do. So here I am. I have found out what the IP address is for the two machines and they are both connected to the same internet connection by way of a router. Now what? How do I make them see each other?

1. Don't know about the "cam". Have no real "Vista" experience", but have worked some with Windows XP file and Printer sharing.

If you don't have Vista drivers for the printer, I don't think you'll be able to print from the Vista machine, but you should be able to print SHARED Vista files from the Windows XP machine.

You may have to enable the "Computer Browser" service on one of the machines in order to see the resources of each computer on the other's "My Network Places".

If you have a functioning network, you would try to ping each computer from the other by IP address to ensure you have physical connectivity. You might have to disable or configure the LAN side firewalls to permit ping to go through (ICMP protocol, I believe). If successful, you would then ping each other by their computer name, e.g. "RedCloud" (NETBIOS) to ensure you have name resolution working.

You should then try to access the other computer's shared resources (using either the NETBIOS name or IP address where it says "ComputerName"):

Quote
Using Start-Run

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In Open, type \\ComputerName\SharedPrinterName, and then press ENTER.

For example, to connect to the shared printer named COLOR on the computer named HOMESRV, you would type \\HOMESRV\COLOR. You can use upper or lowercase letters for the computer and printer share names.

If you don't remember the name of the share, you can do the following:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In Open, type \\ComputerName and then press ENTER.

You need to ensure "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is installed and enabled on the LAN connection. You also need to enable sharing for the files, directories, or printers you wish to share. You may have to disable or configure the firewalls to permit file and printer sharing.

2. Windows XP. For Windows XP file and print sharing see the following downloadable Microsoft documents. If you're impatient, it's OK to start with the "Troubleshooting" document first:
File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows
Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP

3. Windows Vista. For Vista file and printer sharing try these links:
File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista
Troubleshoot file and printer sharing

4. Computer Browser Service. If you're looking in "My Network Places", people frequently complain about not seeing the "other" computers and their resources. This has to do with the "Computer Browser" service. At least one of the computers on the LAN (the one that's powered "on" most of the time), should have the "Computer Browser" service running. It will build and maintain a "master" list of the other computers in your workgroup, so when they go to look at "My Network Places" this list can be sent to them without having to build one from scratch for each REQUEST. Look at the following downloadable Microsoft documents (primarily for Windows XP):
Computer Browsing for SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows
Troubleshooting Computer Browsing on SOHO Networks with Microsoft WindowsThe following Microsoft web page appears to be user friendly instructions to Enable file and printer sharing under Vista. I think it's worth a look.Like dahlarbear said make sure you can ping the other computers so you know you can connect with them. If the computers are on the same network and you can ping them then you should have no problem sharing printers with XP from Vista. I have a setup with my own computers to do that. If you have an ethernet port on the printer you can connect the printer directly to the network, if not then the printer I assume will be connected directly to one of the computers, probably the XP. In this case this is what you would do:

First make sure you have the printer installed on the one machine.

Then from Vista go to control panel, printers, then click the add printer tab.

From here click the option network, wireless, bluetooth. It's something like that.

Then if both computers are on the same network Vista should detect any printers that are on the other machine or machines. Just click the one you want and that's it.

On a side note, if the printer you want to access is connected directly to another computer you have to leave that computer on all the time if you PLAN to print. If you are able to connect the printer directly to the network then you won't have this problem. As for the camera, I'm not sure, I do use stuff like that, so I can't help you there.

Solve : help setting up internet on 98 compaq laptop?

Answer»

i just got a laptop from someone for free
and i cant figure out how to set up internet on it
whenever i try to connect it tries to use dial up but i just have normal cox cable internet
if anyone can guide me through the steps i would be eternally gratefulCall ISP.The Cox cable connects to a modem. Will the modem be directly wired to the laptop? Or will the modem be connected to a wired (or wireless) router/switch box?

Are you trying to establish a wired or wireless connection from the laptop to the internet?
I'm not sure what you have installed on the laptop, but I assume since you are using a cable modem then you do have a NIC installed. And since every time you try and connect to the internet it tries to dial out, it could be a couple of things. You may still have the modem installed on the system. You could try uninstalling it from device manager, by looking for anything that SAYS something like fax modem, or 56K, ETC. If you don't know how to get to device manager here are some ways:

To access the device manager, follow these steps (Win 98):

1. From the START menu, select Settings, and then CONTROL Panel.

2. Double-click the System icon, and then click the Device Manager tab.

Alternatively, you can do the following:

1. On the desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, and select Properties.

2. Click the Device Manager tab.

Also, I don't know what browser you are using either. I will assume that you are using IE. If this is the case sometimes, the browser could still be recognizing the dialup modem. What you need to do is go into Tools, Internet Options, then CONNECTIONS tab. From there you should see Dialup and VPN settings. Not sure how it is on older versions, but that is how it is on IE 7. Anyway, just remove any conflicting items in the window and that should hopefully clear up the problem.

Solve : connecting second computer to internet via wireless router?

Answer»

Hi People,
It is a while since I have asked for assistance, HOWEVER, I am now in the B & S. I have installed (with a lot of help from a friend) a wireless router which that nice MAN from Tiscali sent me and on my main comp it is perfect. The problem lies in my other comp (grandchildrens play comp) which was at FIRST nicely connected but then Mr William Gates SAID I should INSTALL some updates. As the comp had lain idle for some time it seemed the right thing to do so I said "go ahead and install them". I am now unable to get on the NET and the Wireless Icons (bottom right of screen) have big red crosses through them. I have restored the system to a time before update but after wireless install but with no positive results.

Any ideas people? Hi people, It is me again. Thank you if anyone has looked at this problem but I have fixed it. I reinstalled USB adaptor software and Hey presto it now works.

Thanks again.Thank you for posting back

Solve : Help buying the right gadget/equipment?

Answer»

I already checked the Microsoft Network guide, but it's questions and solution didn't apply to my current situation.

Alright I'm PLANNING to buy a Synology DISK Station DS207+ (128MB) with 2TB(2 HDs). The specs are at the bottom of this page.
That is going to be my "music server" with which I'll stream music all other house. Now all that I need is a DIGITAL Media Receiver or a radio of some sort, that can play :

  • streams (ALSO Internet Streams) over (W)LAN
  • CD/DVD -+/R/RW
  • tapes (cassettes)
  • USB

.

Does anybody know if such a thing exists or where I can get such a device ?

Thanx in advance.

Solve : The Net Down?

Answer»

Hey

My internet isn't working and its not because of my connection. I have adsl broadband and all the lights are green. I've contact my internet provider and they've said nothing is wrong on their end.

Apparantly the problem lies within my computer somewhere.

I'm really stuck. I don't know what could be wrong.

I also just wanted to add, I've been kinda naughty and haven't exactly renewed my subscription for virus protection. I've been meaning to but just having gotten round to it. Could it have something to do with viruses? I've only had the net for 2 and a half weeks and my laptop for 1 and a bit years.

Anyone have any ideas? How is your computer connected to the internet (modem, router)? Windows version? Its connected through a modem.

And when I called my internet provider, they said something about windows browser?

I don't know what that means.Browser, is a program, you use to surf the internet. The most popular are: Internet EXPLORER, Firefox, Opera.
What windows version do you have? Windows XP, Vista, or other?
What exactly do you mean by "my internet isn't working"?Well...I have Internet Explorer and my version of windows is Windows XP.

What I mean when I wrote "my internet isn't working" is that I am unable to go onto the websites I want to go onto. The page doesn't show up.

I turn my modem on and all lights are greens. I click on Internet Explorer and this is where the problem occurs. My homepage that usually shows up doesn't and when I type in for example www.google.com it says the page has expired/cannot be displayed or something like that. Either that or it says something about not being able to find server.

Could this be caused by a Trojan?
Go to the address bar in your browser, and type

www.yahoo.com

If it doesn't take you to Yahoo's home page, humor me and go back to the address bar and instead of letters, type

69.147.114.210

See if that takes you to Yahoo.

It may not, but if it does, your internet provider's DNS (Domain Name Seriver) may be down.

When we type in an internet address like www.yahoo.com, the request is routed to the DNS server, which checks its tables and converts it to the IP (Internet Protocol) address, which is kinda sorta like your dwelling's nine digit zip code (if you're in the USA).

You can surf the entire internet if you know the IP addresses of the destinations you want to VISIT. Even the pages of this forum have their own IP addresses.

I only mention all this because my former internet provider, which is a big name national company, lost the DNS server that was servicing my area two or three times in the same year. I oculd use the internet if I knew the IP addresses of sites I wanted to viisit, but really, I had to wait until the server was put back in service.

Also...
With computer off, unplug modem from power source. Wait 1 minute. Plug it back in.
Turn computer on.
Go Start>Run, type in:
cmd
Click OK.
Command Prompt window will open. Type in:
ping www.google.com (<----watch for "space" after "ping")
Hit Enter.
Post back what it said.Oh, yeah, Broni -- thank you -- I should've suggested the ping test.

Nita, do it Broni's WAY, first, and see what you get, please. You can MESS with my stuff later...Thanks for all your help but mysterious it decided to work again a couple of days after. I still don't know what was wrong in the first place. (Maybe my ISP tech support was wrong and it was down on there end)

In case you still wanted to know the ping stats are as follows...

packets: sent = 4, received = 4, lost = 0 (0% loss)

When I called my ISP they told me to do the same thing you did and after I read the results he said it was all normal...so...yeah...I'm just glad its back up and I hope I didn't waste any of you time. Hopefully it doesn't do it again.

Thanks once again

I had number of cases when ISP lied to me.Quote

I had number of cases when ISP lied to me.

Broni, I'm shocked and APPALLED!

(I've experienced the same. )Comcast is kinda OK, but I remember, when broadband came to my area in late '90s, the only provider was @Home (later taken over by AT&T, and then Comcast). They were notorious of it. Every other time, I called, because internet was down, all was fine on THEIR end.
Surely enough, next morning connection was up.
Ahh, painful broadband beginnings....

Solve : network file sharing question?

Answer»

i was attempting to CONNECT my xbox360 to my computer to share it's internet connection, thought i'd try for myself without looking into it first
i ended up going through a network set up wizard and ACCEPTING print a file sharing.
was asked to restart.
no joy, xbox wont connect.

but now i'm just thinking i should not have done all that .. i am connected to the internet wirelessly too, will this affect me security wise? or is there nothing for me to worry about here?

by the way, i have searched and not just came straight here asking questions.
http://support.microsoft.com/KB/307874 tells me i go to folder options and deselect
Simple file sharing. and theres nothing like that there at all. i'll take a screenshot if ya don't belive me lol..
i am the administrator and i am using XP so something odd is going on.
thanks for any help on thisI don't really know what you've done so it is kinda to tell you if it will affect your security or not...

I also need to know more about your connection.
what kind of wireless connection is it? Are you connected to a wireless router connected to a wired (A)DSL/Cable/etc connection?
Is the wireless connection encrypted?
Btw. here is some info on how to setup internet connection sharing for your xbox.
http://bimmergeek.blogspot.com/2006/05/configuring-network-bridge-for-xbox.htmli'm really not sure how to explain.
basicaly i started with Network Setup Wizard plugged in a ethernet cable(or whatever it's called)
and continued... selecting accept on enable file and print sharing.. asked me to name the connection.. clicked finish.... nothing has actualy changed at all i don't think.
it's just that my computer seems to have shared folders on which i can't turn off at all. ( how do i? )
the Network Setup Wizard may have nothing to do with it. just thought i'd add in. incase that was the reason.

my connection goes like this so far:
modem router to wireless usb adapter to computer
and i have anouther computer connected via a cable to the router

so if one computer picks up something nasty, that means the other will too over the network?

-----

thanks for the link deerpark
reason it's taken me time to reply is becuase i've spent the last 2 hours reading that page over and over step by step
and i swear i'm almost there . i GOT it all wired together and bridged.
but i do the 'xbox live test' it's the IP test that fails
i have both my xbox and LAN set to "Obtain IP adresses automaticaly".
i will give it anouther shot tomorow, think i done enough downloading and messing about for 1 day..
and i'm starting to babble on a bit i think

As long as you're behind a router having file sharing enabled isn't a big problem.
Just make sure your wireless connection is password protected and preferably using WPA encryption.
You can check what folders your computer is currently sharing by selecting Administrative Tools --> Computer Management from the Control Panel.
In Computer Management SELECT Shared Folders --> Shares.just writing back to say thanks
and thanks even more for sharing that link with me

i now have my connection shared with xboxlive and it's working perfectly -
i was expecting lattency from sharing the connection, but somehow there is not! i love it
(the mistake for anyone intrested.. and quite alot of people had it too. was that i was entering the same ip as the one i'm using now for the pc. and it does not work that way..that's 1 thing not POINTED out on the guide(just copy ur ip but change the last number on the ip and it will work))

Solve : Remote Login to Home PC from Work?

Answer»

Hello everyone. This is my first time posting and I tried searching for the answer first, but no success.

My question is:

Is there anyway to SETUP a VNC Server (or some other type of remote log in server) on my home PC that I could access from work USING Remote Desktop Connection?

This might be a STRANGE question, but the reason I ask is because my home PC is Windows XP Home which does not allow me to log into it with Remote Desktop Connection and my work is pretty strict about not letting me download software that they have not authorized so I can't download a VNC client. My only client option would be RDC since it came on my work PC

I appreciate the help!As far as I know you can't connect to anything but a remote desktop server with the remote desktop client. You CERTAINLY can't use VNC.

But wait a bit... maybe someone knows different.I don't know what you are trying to do, but if you only need some files from home, you can download and access them if you have OnLine backup. Online backup seem to be a good way of going for many reasons, although it's pretty new to me.
BertUsing Remote Desktop Connection with VNC is not possible, sorry.

If your (I presume) workplace allows you to have Internet, I would check out www.logmein.com . I have been using LogMeIn for quite a while flawlessly.

Solve : WPC54G is inactive. How can i activate it??

Answer»

Im not sure why this CARD is inactive. I need to activate it SOMEHOW. Does anyone know how i can do this? Thanks - JT
P.S. Im on a DELL Laptop with Windows XP SP2 The Card is a Linksys WPC54GI'm assuming when you say card your referring to a PCI card that slides in to the laptop. Do you have the correct drivers installed for it? Look at the device manager to see if you have any red x's or yellow !'s. If you do then update or reinstall the drivers. SOMETIMES it ALSO helps to uninstall the hardware and then do it from scratch. If all that fails, I'd say you have a dead card.

i have just signed up for orange broadband but the livebox will not CONNECT to my desktop pc but it works perfectly with a LAP top. There seems to be something missing with my pc connection. PLEASE helpfirst off, have you followed the set up on the CD? entering username/pass.. or a WEP key
if you have done what was asked in the set up then only advice i can give is give Orange a call (there costmer servis is not so bad when i last used it)

also might be an IDEA to check in Network connections to see if the router/wireless adapter is detected, but not connected.. or your computer is not picking up nothing at all. before you give orange a call.

may possibly be a USB hub that is faulty so maybe wire it up again, that's if your using a USB for it.

Is the two computers connected directly to each other with a RJ 45 cable or do you have hub/switch/router in between?
If they're directly connected, have you remembered to use a crossed RJ 45 cable? A regular one wont work.

(Oh and you should probably edit the IP address for your Dial-up connection out of your last post. It is a WAN IP so in theory someone could use it to HACK you.)Sorry Nivoce to networking, I'll connect the two then. A hub, I didnt know what you really needed since you didnt state anything specfic. 1. Client Machine. What operating system is your computer using? Windows XP Home or Professional? Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), SP2, SP3?

Is it configured in a "Workgroup" or "Domain"?

2. Server (Machine hosting "plotter" on local port?). What operating system is the server using? Netware, Windows, Linux? Windows XP Home or Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003?

3. Connecting to a SHARED Printer (from Windows XP client computer). I'm assuming printers and plotters are configured and accessed the same way.
Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP
File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows

The following is taken from the downloadable Microsoft Word document referenced in the "Troubleshooting" link above. If you want pictures and screen displays, download the document. In the procedure(s) below you may substitute the "IP Address" in place of the "ComputerName" hosting the printer. Either of the three methods should work. Quickest and simplest would be:

Quote

Using Start-Run

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In Open, type \\ComputerName and then press ENTER.
The window that is displayed contains the file and printer shares of the specified computer. An example is shown in the following figure.

From this window, you can double-click the shared printer icon to create a connection to it. Alternately, you can open the Printers and Faxes folder and double-click the shared printer icon.

If you use the "Add Printer Wizard", you do want to click a network printer, or printer attached to another computer.

Connecting to a Shared Printer
There are several ways to connect to a shared printer, including the following:
 From the Add Printer Wizard
 Using Start-Run to open a window containing the shared printer
 Using My Network Places to open a window containing the shared printer

From the Add Printer Wizard
To connect to a shared printer from the Add Printer Wizard, do the following:
1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
2. In Printers and Faxes, click Add a printer in the Printer Tasks list.
3. On the Welcome to the Add Printer Wizard page of the Add Printer Wizard, click Next.
4. On the Local or Network Printer page, click A network printer, or printer attached to another computer. An example is shown in the following figure.

5. On the Specify a Printer page, you can do one of the following:
 Click Browse for a printer to use a Browse window to locate a shared printer on your network.
 Click Connect to this printer and type the \\ComputerName\SharedPrinterName (in which ComputerName is the name of the computer sharing the printer and SharedPrinterName is the name of the print share).
 Click Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network and type the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) address of the shared Internet printer.
An example of using the Connect to this printer option is shown in the following figure.

6. Click Next.
7. On the Default Printer page, click Yes if you want to make this network printer the default printer. Otherwise, click No. Click Next.
8. On the Completing the Add Printer Wizard page, click Finish.
The shared printer should now appear in your Printers and Faxes folder. An example is shown in the following figure.

Using Start-Run
Another way to make a connection to a shared printer is by doing the following:
The window that is displayed contains the file and printer shares of the specified computer. An example is shown in the following figure.

From this window, you can double-click the shared printer icon to create a connection to it. Alternately, you can open the Printers and Faxes folder and double-click the shared printer icon.

Using My Network Places
To use My Network Places to display the contents of a shared folder, do the following:
1. Click Start, and then click My Network Places.
2. In the Network Tasks list, click View workgroup computers.
A window is displayed containing the set of computers in your home or small office workgroup. An example is shown in the following figure.

3. From the workgroup window, double-click the computer containing the shared printer, and then double-click the shared printer.

Solve : no IP address?

Answer»

Last week I networked three pc computers using a Linksys Ethernet cable router with a 4 port switch (with help from their tech support). They all worked and received internet connection. A couple days later I accidentally unplugged power to the router and my computer (1 of the 3). When I BOOTED back up, the other computers are fine, but my computer will not connect to the internet. It won't give me IP address information (after doing command, IPCONFIG I just get a new prompt.) Linksys couldn’t figure it out because it isn’t an issue with their product.

I am obviously a novice at computer stuff. I'm not even sure if it is hardware, software or a networking problem. Any ideas? Thank you!
try doing a ipconfig -release followed by a ipconfig -renew

If that doesn't work I will need to know more about the computer.
Specifications/brand name and model and the version of Windows.
And do a ipconfig -all on the computer and post the result.

My computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 series using Windows XP version 5.1. I did the release, renew. When I type IPCONFIG -ALL the response is:

Windows IP configuration

C prompt.

Thank you!Do you get any error messages when doing ipconfig -release or -renew?there were no error messages with ipconfig -release, ipconfig -renew.
Right click My Computer and select Properties.
Select the Hardware tab and press DEVICE Manager.
Do you have any devices with a yellow exclamation mark or a red X?
If yes please post the name of the devices.Yes! Under Network adapters:
(Yellow Exclamation point) Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller - Packet Scheduler Miniport
Yellow Exclamation point) WAN Miniport (IP) - Packet Scheduler MiniportThat's your problem right there. The drivers for your network card is not functioning. They may have been corrupted when the power was lost.

Right click the devices with an exclamation mark in the device manager and select Uninstall.
REBOOT the computer.
Windows should redetect and hopefully reinstall the drivers.
If it pops up with a Hardware install wizard after the reboot let it try and install the software automatically. When I tried to uninstall, it gives the message "Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to BOOT up the computer." It gave this message on each of the two devices I tried to uninstall. Is there another way to uninstall?

Hmm...
Try reinstalling the drivers for the network card instead.
You may have received a driver disc with the computer.
If not go here
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
and input your service tag. It should present you with the right drivers for your machine then.deerpark:
Thank you for how much you have helped me! I am still working on the drivers. I was able to install one from my backup disks, and am still looking for the other.

How do I MAKE the computer use the newly installed driver instead of the old one?It should use the new driver all by it self.

Solve : implimenting erp online without internet?

Answer»

dear sir
we have steel industry head office located at kolkata and above 20 branches all over india
we WANT to implement online erp software. but in some locations we dont have internet
connection. In how many ways we can implement it. How to implement online erp software without internet. It should be cost effective also. please suggest us best erp software.
can we use the methods like VPN, satellete internet or intranet or any similer best method?
thank u
Good day.

Dear venkat2014, you are asking a very technical question. If erp software requires network connection (not internet necessarily) you are obliged to obtain at least a phone line to be able to communicate through modems.
You are asking for a "RESEARCH operation" from our side, and this is not fair.

Small answers though: vpn - you need an internet connection or a network connection available. Satellite internet - it could be a good option (compare the prices of internet satellite connection with the prices to obtain a wireless or wired connection to the sites without wan network connection - and I mean implementation, monthly fees and maintenance).
Intranet - how big are those unlinked sites? Are there tens or hundreds of computers? What is the work volume at those sites? How much those sites affect the enterprise general volume of work, the general volume of changes? What do you mean by intranet? (If you mean a "part of the great company network - you need wan access to the rest of the network).

Your DEMAND is so general, so big and not refined.
We can help you with an opinion, with help to a small problem. Don't ask us to propose a plan for your company. It is much work, it is not for free, I don't want to work for no money. I can advice, I can give a very small advice for free, yes. But more than that...

My small advice: estimate the situation. You don't know how? Search a company that knows (ussually an ISP has people with knowledge about CONNECTING such far sites, but they are not necessarily the only option).

(Your demand seems to be a homework to me, I just hope that I misunderstand you. "thank u"? )

is there any way out by which i can push the majority of internet speed to my computer only
In short, no.i have that there is some technique called "Leeching " which can do this job.Leeching in what terms?
What I'm familiar with is that leeching is a term used with bitorrents.

When you download a torrent and SAY you are at 50%, someone might be downloading the same file and they can get a part of your file even though your download is not complete. This is Leeching.yeah correct , bt can this happen by thefting the bandwith of others peers computers..Yes....so what is your question?you mean yes we can theft others internet speed and increase ours?
hw?No you can't. My friend in the flat next to me DOWNLOADS loads of stuff every day with BT and my Internet seems fine.

From what he's TOLD me, downloading one at a time speeds up the individual download.

It is not possible to sabotage other people's Internet to ADD to your own.ok thankx for ur help..

Hey all, for a very long time, my internet connection is very confusing, and slow... I have Comcast internet service and a motorola black SURFboard SB5120 modem. My D-Link box is a DI-624 wirless 108G Router with 1 antenna. The router is connected to the modem, and the modem is connected to computer 1. Computer 2 and Computer 3 are in different rooms, not very far from the router and have D-Link internet cards that were bought with the router. I also have a laptop connected the the wireless network. If the computers are very close to the router, they have perfect connection, but anywhere else have decent to low connection. Computer 3 is literally three feet from the router, only separated by a wall. The internet is rarely "blazing fast" like comcast says, but is always enough to do some internet browsing and maybe stream video. I realize this isn't much of a problem when just browsing, however when I try to play a game on a computer, such as WoW, I always end up going linkdead. Even when I directly plug my laptop into the router, I get disconnected. I realize four computers on a network isn't really that many and this is why I'm so frustrated, as many of my friends have more computers on a network and have ABSOLUTELY no problems. It's really frustrating for me because I can't play any types of games... I don't understand why it's this way... this has also been going on when I had my old network STUFF. The main computer is from HP and is about 5 years old. I was beginning to think it's a problem with the main computer because it's old and slow and could have a lot of viruses on it. I scanned with a lot of programs and found nothing big. If anymore information is needed I would love to give it, just ask. Thanks a ton guys.Quote

The router is connected to the modem, and the modem is connected to computer 1.
I don't know, if it's a typo, but normally, you connect computer to the router, and router to the modem.yea, typo sorry

In my opinion, you need a new router.ok, what's your recommendationAny known brand will do: D-link, Netgear, Linksys, Belkin.http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8548841&type=product&id=1188561003287

is that good? sorry just want to know i have the best..The price looks really steep. Other then that...I have good luck with tigerdirect.com You can try them for a router.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2902294&CatId=373

here is a wireless N that is a little cheaper.

Hey, avoid wireless N or super G routers. They are not standardized. Stick with 802.11 G routers only.
Try with an ALTERNATIVE operating system and see how it works (Ubuntu, Knoppix).
If you get disconnections while using wires to connect to the router, the problem may be behind your router, to ISP equipment or ISP. If you connect a computer directly to ISP modem (the Motorola), do you have any of the problems you mention?i bought a Netgear RangeMax Next Wireless-N Gigabit Router, and the problem continues... I'm thinking it might be the modem now? Any more help is AWESOME, thanks.I ran a ping test in the command prompt on the main computer using ping -t www.google.com and found that I didn't get a reply and my LAN computers lagged at that time... so does this mean it's the modem?

Solve : wireless encryption key?

Answer»

i have a COUPLE of questions here as i'm setting up my first wireless network..
but the one that brang me over here is.. on my belkin usb wireless adapter, the software that came with it.. i just don't understand it. i see my modem router shows up, but it wants an encryption key from me, and i don't know what that is.
all i have is my ISP's username and password, and a sticker that's on the side of my router with a S/N code, MAC code and a WEP key - whatever they are.

the THING came with no instructions at all so i'm a little confused.
software for both belkin adapter and Livebox (my router) have been installed on the computer.
running windows XP sp2

the other question was. i had a message pop up after inserting the usb adapter saying the device uses HI Speed usb, and saying there may be a loss in performance becuase i'm using a standad usb hub.. before i go looking for one at the shop, would it be worth it?
my connection to my router displays as STRONG anyway.. atleast for the time being.just POSTING to say i'm now online, and for anyone that may have read and was wondering too.. the wireless adapter asked for a encryption key, and what it wanted was the WEP code, don't know why i didn't try it earlier

belkin N adapter with a livebox and orange as ISP, running faster than i thought it would go, so i recomend it to anyone that's reading..
although, i've just come accross what i think is a virus that the my AV wont detect.. thought it was all too good to be true

Solve : LAN Client Problem with Windows 2000 Pro talking to Host Windows XP Home Edition?

Answer»

HELP REQUEST...

HOST: Dell Dimension 4500 Desktop Windows XP Home Edition
CLIENT: Dell Latitude CPt/Docking Station Windows 2000 Professional Edition
LAN: Ethernet, Lynksys Switch and twisted cable, 50 feet

SITUATION: All functions working. LAN is connected at 100 Mbps Connected
HOST: All functions working
CLIENT: All functions working except not talking to HOST or passing thru to ISP

PROBLEM: When I use the XP HOST Network Wizard to set-up the LAN and burn a disk as directed for configuring the CLIENT 2000 PC the DISC will not load into the Latitude CLIENT. That is because of incompatibility of XP and 2000!

QUESTION: What information is on the configuration disc I made from the Network Wizard on the HOST XP PC do I need to enter in the 2000 Pro manually while in Administrator mode? What is the path?

THANKS,
Al Barrs

I can't help you with the Network Wizard because it's... well, it's a "wizard", and they never give up their secrets. I'm a firm believer in setting up Local Area Network (LAN) configurations manually. Along the way you'll pick up some knowledge and be able to troubleshoot future problems.

I'm also not good at playing "twenty" questions, but I can point you to some excellent references on the subject. And if you have a "specific" question, I might be able to help with that.

An easy READ (WRITTEN for mere mortals); I would start with these downloadable Microsoft documents. They are probably all you'll need. There's a lot of overlap between them; so if you're IMPATIENT, start with the "Troubleshooting" one:
File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows

And then there's a set of web based entries by Microsoft that looks pretty good. It's broken into eight separate pages so you can ZERO in on the area you're interested in. Following is link to first page:

Thanks dahlarbear!

If I can learn how to setup my 2000 Pro to talk to my XP over my LAN I will be home free. The two computers are connecting but not communicating. I think it is an IP problem, but I don't know what IP to put in the TCP in the 2000...

QUESTION: What information is on the configuration disc I made from the Network Wizard on the HOST XP PC do I need to enter in the 2000 Pro manually while in Administrator mode? What is the path?

0. ipconfig. From a command window on each LAN computer, enter "ipconfig /all" without the quotes. This will display the settings used by TCP/IP, e.g. IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway Address, and DNS Server Address.

1. Configuration Information. You may need to set the TCP/IP properties (IP Address, Subnet Mask, DNS Server Address(es), Default Gateway Address) on the 2000 Pro Computer if it's not configured to get them automatically.
TCP/IP Home Networking and File Sharing Tutorial

Each LAN computer and LAN side of router/switch should use the same subnet mask. This is almost always "255.255.255.0". This mask indicates that the first three octets of the IP address will represent the "network address" of the LAN segment and the last octet will represent the host node on that network. For example, given IP address of 10.17.11.5, the network address would be "10.17.11.x" (or maybe "10.17.11.0") and the host node would be "5".

Each LAN computer and LAN side of router/switch should be on the same network segment, e.g. "10.17.11.x".

Each LAN computer should have the LAN side of router/switch as its default Gateway address; e.g. "10.17.11.1"

The DNS server addresses generally come from your ISP automatically. If not, you may use the OpenDNS server addresses; e.g. "208.67.222.222" and "208.67.220.220".
Static IP address setup - Converting from a DHCP based LAN configuration

Also, you generally would assign each LAN computer with the same "workgroup" name.

2. LinkSys Switch. What model number? What hardware version? Look on bottom. For example "WRT54G v5" Is this switch a "router/switch". In other words does it have a single "WAN" or "Internet" port and then possibly four "LAN" ports?

If it's a router/switch, then you can enable or disable it's DHCP function. If "enabled", the router/switch can dynamically assign the TCP/IP configuration parameters (IP address, subnet mask, Gateway address, DNS server address) for each LAN computer. If "disabled" (static), you must manually configure each LAN computer with appropriate values. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties of the Local Area Network (LAN) connection of each computer must be configured for either automatic (dynamic) or manual (static) assignment of its values.

It should be set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" for a dynamic assignment or "Use the following IP address" for a static assignment.

Solve : Networking XP Home with XP Professional?

Answer»

Can you NETWORK XP HOME and Professional when I do this the home computer will talk to the professional but on the home cant find the printer connected to the professional computer. Any thoughts please.1. Yes, you can network Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional in a Local Area Network (LAN).

2. Lacking a master "Computer Browser" you should be able to access the resources (LIKE a printer) of another LAN computer by:

Using Start-Run

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In Open, type \\ComputerName\SharedPrinterName, and then press ENTER.

For example, to connect to the shared printer named COLOR on the computer named HOMESRV, you would type \\HOMESRV\COLOR. You can use upper or lowercase letters for the computer and printer share names.

If you don't remember the name of the share, you can do the FOLLOWING:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In Open, type \\ComputerName and then press ENTER.

3. LAN Setup References. The following are excellent references for setting up file and/or printer sharing on a LAN.

An easy read (written for mere mortals); I would start with these downloadable Microsoft documents. They are probably all you'll need. There's a lot of overlap between them; so if you're impatient, start with the "Troubleshooting" one:

Yeah... I know... that makes almost no sense to you. Look at the following downloadable Microsoft documents:
Computer Browsing for SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows

Solve : wireless laptop stop working wirelessly?

Answer»

my computer has randomly stopped working wirelessly,

i have connect it via a cable atm and works fine.

but the light that is normally blue is now orange that says if its working wireless or not

can SOMEONE tell me how to switch this BACK on

please help........i hate wiresYour wireless card may be dying. Borrow one from a friend. What brand of laptop is it? I'm assuming your card is internal as most are these days. Try hitting the button to turn it back on. "Which would be where the blue or orange light is." If that works you may have to reconnect by refreshing wireless networks and choosing one. If that doesn't do anything then go to start, control panel, SYSTEM, hardware tab, device MANAGER. See if you have any yellow !'s or and red X's. If you do then you COULD have just blown away a driver.Hi sarah172.
Where it happens this wireless disconnection? Are there any other computers connecting wireless to the same router/access point? Maybe it's nothing wrong with your laptop or wireless router/access point, maybe it's "just" interference; in this case you should try the channel for the wireless communication, but it could be possible that all the spectrum is interfered. Microwave owen, some electric equipment nearby?

Solve : Gigabit Routers??

Answer»

I am looking to buy a new router (believe it or not I still have Wireless-B, SAD I know). I have been looking for a while now and researching them and am trying to figure out what type of router to GO with. I am looking for the fastest internet and gaming speeds I can get for a HOME network. I am confused on whether I should get a gigabit router and would benefit from it. What are the benefits of a gigabit router? Is it helpful for gaming and faster internet SURFING speeds? Any help would be appreciated as I am hoping to buy as soon as possible. Why is it sad that you have a wireless B router? It's sad because the speed is dismal and the router must be reset CONSTANTLY. A gigabit router is good if you want to be able to transfer files as quickly as possible between computer on your home network. Unless you happen to have a gigabit internet connection, it isn't going to do anything for your online connection speed.

Solve : Wireless network problem?

Answer»

got a linksys wrt54gl setup upstairs, hooked up to a cable modem. there's a linksys WIRELESS-G network card on a pc and ps3 that i setup the wireless internet connection for, which are 2 floors downstairs, in the basement. according to the SIGNAL on the linksys wireless-G pci card, it has 3 out of 5 bars, and the connection is not always consistent, and it's slowww. like 56k slow at times, almost. and to make matters worse, on the PC that's wirelessly connected(which is running vista home), the connection sometimes goes away. meanwhile, on a laptop with windows xp home in the same room, this xp laptop has a good connection.

what can i do to improve the speed? i'll have to run more tests to see if it works better when closer to the router, but i've heard about DD-WRT. how much will the range increase on the router if i install the DD-WRT firmware? are there any other things i can do to make the pc and ps3 wireless connection faster? security wise, i'm only running a 64-bit WEP encryption and not showing the SSID.

i've LOOKED on this site for info on dd-wrt;

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation#Downloading_DD-WRT

thanks in advance.Where have you heard DD-WRT will improve the range of your router? I've got a fair amount of experience with DD-WRT and I sincerely doubt it will improve the range at all.
As I see it, your problem is that there are two floors between the router and the PS3 and the computer. Depending on what your house is made of, how thick the walls are, etc this may be a bit much for most cheap WiFi routers.
But there are things you can do that might improve the signal.
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone/wirelesstips.mspx
I'll have to second Deerpark on this one. I'm running two wireless networks in my home, one wireless g connected through my Actiontec DSL modem and one wireless n through linksys wireless n router. I'm only one floor up and my wireless g connection drops out from time to time, but my wireless n never does. That's just something you get to deal with when DEALING with wireless g. My advice if you care to spend a little money is upgrade to wireless n. It makes a world of difference.Wireless n is not a standard yet. And usually the n and g wireless networks interfere, with the possibility of great effects on communication for g equipment. So, all your wireless equipment is 802.11 n compliant or forget about the 802.11n. Stick with 802.11g.
cobra, you may buy a second wireless router or an access point and use it as an access point (place it close to your 2 COMPUTERS in the basement). Use mac filtering for deciding which equipment connects to which router/access point.

Solve : ip address conflict?

Are you running a active DIRECTORY SITE? And your own DNS servers?

not only one server it is affecting 3 to 4 server.
there is not active directory installed.
all the computer are in workgroup.Check dhcp address pool on your dhcp server. What are your servers' ROLES? How exactly is your network set up? Is it DCHP or static IP addresses?
Download and run the Angry IP scanner and set it to scan everything in options. Check the results to see if anything is repeated or conflicting or just plain incorrect.
You should also probably check each node's NIC configuration. open the command prompt and enter "ipconfig /all".

Solve : Wireless Network Question?

Answer»

I'm not very knowledgeable on the wireless network stuff....its all pretty new to me. I have a wireless router at home that connects the desktop to the laptops and its all working great but my question is: I will be traveling a bit for the next month and plan on taking my laptop with me....I cant always find a public network to USE. Is there a way to install a service on my laptop that I can use anywhere? Someone mentioned to me a wireless network card that can be installed on it...but where does the service come from and what is the monthly cost?
Any information will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!Doesn't your laptop have a wireless card right now?

LOGGING onto a wireless network doesn't cost you anything. There are other services that do cost money and can be used when no wireless network is around but those do cost money..As Raptor says if you have a wireless card in that laptop you're all set...do some RESEARCH about your DESTINATION to see where it's available.

patio. 8-)Logging onto a wireless network MAY come with a cost. Here in the UK there are places (e.g. airports) where you can connect to the wireless service, but it's on a pay as you go basis.

Failing wireless, there's always a cellphone-style card which gives you truly mobile networking, pretty much wherever you are. Don't know much about that in the U.S.I can pretty much connect anywhere in my city...we had a wireless iniative sponsored by Intel and working with CWRU...one of the HUBS of the original web.

I like it ! !
