Solve : Why cant i get a solid green ADSL light on router???

Answer»

Im online at moment with external Speedtouch330 MODEM sent to me by Orange.
Im struggling to set up a Belkin Modem/router and HIT a problem, i called Belkin to help set it up as i cant access the 192.168.2.1 to launch set up wizard and he tells me i need that solid ADSL (phone) led to be solid before they can help me further.
So why cant i get that solid green on router/modem but can when i plug same wires into EXT usb modem?
I have tried 3 different filters.
New modem/router is ethernet.
Can you tell i am not a pc genius?? all/any help much appreciated
MattMore Info: What is the Model Number of the "Belkin Modem/router"?

With the model number it may be possible to check the specifications or user manual for information regarding the LEDs you're referring to.Hey DB!!
HI and thanks for the reply.

The answer to your question is . F5D7632-4
My Isp is ORANGE BROADBAND if that helps.

Many thanks.

Please have a look at PCHELPFORUM under NETWORKING and subject USB to ETHERNET CONNECTION for full details of my long ongoing plight to sort this out, i am a PC Numpty!!!Does the Belkin router have an ethernet port? If so, switch your COMPUTER off, plug it into the Belkin router instead, and then switch it on again. Your PC should pick up an IP address from the Belkin and you should then be able to communicate with it.is there a filter on the phone line?

Solve : Checking the status of my I-Direct Modem?

Answer»

Hi,
I use an I-Direct SATELLITE Modem on a KU band with an ISP that turned out not to be as efficient as i desired. I want to change my ISP but was REQUESTED by the new ISP to check if the modem is LOCKED to my last ISP. How can i go about this? and if it is locked to the ISP, how can i unlock it?I would SUGGEST you call your ISP. They should know whether the modem is locked to them.

Solve : Instant Messenger services?

Answer»

Can your ip or identity be tracked through instant messenger services? Some information such as first and last name, date of birth, age and gender can be tracked by the provider of the IM service. Your IP can be logged too, but most IM services only use this if the service is abused. However, you can GET MALWARE and viruses via IM, so consider installing a firewall, anti-spyware and antivirus product.

Here is what I have installed:

Firewall - COMODO Firewall Pro 3
Antispyware - Spybot - Search & Destroy
Antivirus - AVG FREE Edition
Browser - Mozilla FirefoxIP can be (and probably is) logged by the IM service provider. Depending on how the IM network is setup your IP can also be seen by other users when you're chatting with them.

Solve : mypconline connection?

Answer»

If you connect to another computer through a REMOTE computer access service like gotomypc and send an email through the computer you connected to, which ip address would show up on the outgoing email. Would it be the computer you used to access gotomypc or the computer you accessed through gotomypc? I really need to know. Thank you!I don't know what mypconline is and a Google search on it doesn't reveal much. But if it is some kind of remote desktop service I would think the IP would be that of the computer you've connected to.Quote from: sdbuddin on January 09, 2008, 06:34:55 AM

if you use computer a to connect to a remote service and then connect to computer B through that remote service and then use computer b to send email, which ip address will show up on the outgoing email.
The IP of computer B.
Quote from: sdbuddin on January 09, 2008, 06:34:55 AM
can it eventually be traced back to computer a?
Yes it can. The remote service will most likely LOG what IPs have connected to computer B in case the service is exploited for MALICIOUS activity.
Send a bomb threat and I can guarantee that in record time some guys will be knocking at your door, with a deep and urge desire to hear more about, from you, personally. (And I can ASSUME you will be visiting jail at least once.)

Solve : Lossing my internet connection?

Answer»

I am in need of some serious help.

My husband and I share a modem through a wired router and the other day for no reason we would start to lose the connection. We have not downloaded anything and have run our virus software constantly. We have to restart the modem and router to GET connection BACK but it will only last a few minutes. We have also replaced the router but we are now having the same issues with the new one. We are able to get around this problem by TAKING the router completely out of the picture but then my husband is the only one who can connect due to no router useage. Please help I don't have a huge knowledge of computers and I am losing my mind trying to figure this out. This is a shot in the dark but I'm thinking maybe its the network cable itself? Do you have any spare cable that you could switch out with the original? Otherwise TRY using the one your husband is using and hook it up to yours. I'm no network specialist, but I don't think it would hurt. Try this just for grins and giggles. More info would help - current and previous models of router, name of ISP, brief computer specs, etc.

Thanks!Check the CABLES first. When you have problems, can you "ping" one computer from the other? Can you "ping" the router"? If you connect your computer directly to the modem, it works?

Solve : Wifi security?

Answer»

Hello, I have a psp system and when we drive through the city I can pick up multiple wireless networks, some unsecured. Is it legal to use these unsecured networks? It depends.
If you don't "hack" to be able to use one of those networks than it is not your fault that you can connect through an unsecured wireless network. It is the network administrator/owner's fault. You just connect "accidentally" through that network. That depends on what country you live in, but I wouldn't recommend using other peoples unsecured network. Beside the possible legal consequences there's also the moral issue of LEECHING on a service that someone ELSE is paying for.
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13052There have been successful prosecutions in the UK under the Misuse of Computers (or whatever it's called) Act. Don't do it.

Besides, some such "unsecured" networks are in fact "dirty" networks which exist purely for the purpose of stealing data from anyone foolish enough to connect through them.Quote from: Rob POMEROY on January 09, 2008, 10:04:44 AM

Rob is right (I forgot to mention these aspects in my previous post). But a psp system (isn't this a gaming console?)... What personal info would have recorded on a psp?It doesn't need to be on the console - remember that the data transmitted during a web transaction (credentials entered into online banking for example) would be of considerable INTEREST to a packet sniffer.

Solve : Speedtouch router - How to access settings????

Answer»

Merry Christmas all!

Recently changed my ISP to AOL & not liking the new router (speedtouch ST585).

With my old router, I just entered 192.168.0.1 into my browser address bar & I could access the routers settings.

I read online that I could access the Speedtouch by 192.168.0.254.

Well, it worked once then the SECOND time I got a google search!

Does anyone know how I can access this routers settings? thanks in advance...Quote from: neljan on December 27, 2007, 04:43:54 PM

Wouldn't the best thing be to find the manual online for that router?

But, for now - -

By default the IP address should be set to 192.168.1.254

Solve : MMO on wireless network?

Answer»

Hello,

I have Eve online, which many of you know is one of the largest online games in the world. I am a long TIME subscriber but was unable to continue paying for it a few months ago, and I decided to check up on the game last night on a newly un-wired computer. (Wireless) I log onto Eve but it plays for a few minutes and then loses the connection. But when I go to the wireless utility it says the wireless is connected. My wireless card is a belkin and my gateway is from Verizon. This is a common problem with wireless. It is probably loosing connection for just a few seconds. You usually don't notice this during browsing but REAL time GAMING in very sensitive to it.
Start by updating the driver for your wireless card.

How good is your SIGNAL strength? If it's less than full you might want to consider moving your wireless access point to get a better signal. Also in almost all cases, you will achieve optimum results using wireless network cards and router sourced from the same manufacturer.my signal is excellentDid you look for a driver update?I will when I get home, I am at Votech right now.Quote from: apple266 on January 11, 2008, 07:58:19 AM

my signal is excellent

How did you test your wireless signal? What TOOLS have you used?

Solve : Shared printer not printing?

Answer»

I've been setting up a home network for my neighbors and the first time I set up the network everything worked fine no problem. They were able to print from they're family PC to they're office PC without any problems. They have recently contacted me and told me that they're son got on the office PC and messed something up somehow. So I WENT over and checked it out and it looks like the Static IP that I set up for the Office PC was set to default. I switched it back and now the family PC isn't detecting the printer that is installed on the Office PC.

The printer will print from the Office PC but it won't print from the Family's PC. I've checked to see if it was installed correctly. Also whether or not it's being shared and everything looks good. I tried to go to the printer control panel. Then add new printer and select network printer and then I type in the printers name exactly how its shown on the Office PC and then it tells me that "The printer name I entered is invalid. Please enter a valid printer name" But it's exactly as it shows up on the Office PC.

Here is they're PC's info:

The Family PC-
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
2.00ghz, 512mb of RAM

Microsoft Windows Xp Home
Service Pack 2

192.168.1.151
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1

The Office PC-
AMD Athlon XP 2200+
1.80 GHz, 480 Mb of RAM

Microsoft Windows Xp Home
Service Pack 2

192.168.1.152
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1

Sorry for the short novel but I had to explain everything
Are both computers STILL members of the same workgroup?

"IPCONFIG /all" at a COMMAND prompt will tell you lots of useful information.Yes they are still connected to each otherThat's not what I asked though. Cut and paste the output of the command "ipconfig /all". That would be a big help. Ta.Ok then do you want a screenie of both pc's or just one of them? Both would be great, but you can just cut and paste the text from the command prompt rather than taking a SCREENSHOT ("screenie"?!).

Solve : Problems with a WiFi dongle/network...?

Answer»

The computer conserned is an old machine my friends dad dug out of the loft...

They've got a wireless network set up already, with the "Hub" (it's really a 4 port switch + wireless router) upstairs and the main PC downstairs (get's "Low" connection), this second PC is in the room next to the hub...anyway

Right, the main problem...

The second PC:

XP Pro Version 2002 no sp?

Intel P2 400mhz
128mb RAM

D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G122 Wireless USB ADAPTER(rev.B)

No conflicts in device manager

Was working previously

Detects network, but doesn't automatically detect Default Gateway or DNS

When manually input (gateway details taken from another computer on the network) it still doesn't connect.

Loads of sent packets and none recieved.

Yet it works fine with a BlueNEXT BN-WD54G??!

Oh it's USB 1.1

Any ideas on a fix/workaround? They're borrowing my spare dongle, the BlueNEXT one atm, but it'd be NICE to get it fixed and working again for them.

Also, the main computer, could do with some ingenious ways to INCREASE the wireless strength. Atm I think a wifi dongle is just plugged into the back of the machine, so I've suggested an extension to move it AWAY from the electronics, but anyother good ideas on increasing the signal strength? It is tediously slow.

I have suggested a repeater, but he (friends dad) has also been advised to buy a better router...opinions?

That one is a Win XP Home SP2 machine...if you need more specs I can try and get them for you.

Cheers guys,

SidWas it working previously on the same network?
Have you checked Dlink's webpage for a driver update?yeah it was working properly before, but no I've not checked for an updated driver...good thinking. I'll give it a go and POST back if there is any change. There's always the option of >something like this<.

Cool cheers for the idea...a bit pricey but worth considering...

I think I'm gonna try a bit of a home craft design first, if it's ok with them...see if there is any gain.

I need to look for an up-to-date driver...cheers for the reminder!

Solve : Cannnot acces router interface?

Answer»

Hello,

I just bought a Linksys router WRT54G. Setup went ok. Both computers on the internet no problem. I was able to manually GET into the router interface @ 192.168.1.1 changed some security settings, hid my SSID. I UNINSTALLED the Linksys site adviser software as I figured I didn't need it. After that I rebooted the computer and I have been UNABLE to access the routers interface. I keep getting "CONNECTION timed out" I can ping the router. So I power cycled the router nothing, and I did an IPconfig /release and /renew. Still nothing.

Any suggestions? Do I need to re-install that site adviser thing on the Linksys CD?

I am running Windows XP SP2 and OS X 10.4.10. The Windows box is wired, the Mac wireless.

Thanks! You can't connect to the "web style management interface" using 192.168.1.1 in the address bar in your web browser?
You have internet connection in the meantime? You said that "I keep getting "Connection timed out" I can ping the router" but I don't understand if your ping works or you receive "connection time out" messages.
What is the output of ipconfig /all (when you are using the router)?

Your router's manual is here: ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/wrt54g_ug.pdf
See chapter 6, router web-based utility.
i couldn't understand why I could ping the router but still get "connection timed out" from the 192.168.1.1 web based interface for the router. This happened wired and wireless.

I ended up resetting the router. I set up the network again. I also updated the firmware. Works perfectly now. No problems.

Although like I said I still have that free utility from the Linksys CD installed on the wired computer. I'm actually a little leary of uninstalling that. It shouldn't make a difference, I know, but still.

Appreciate the help
Nope. It's totally clean.Try to run one more command:
netsh int ip resetQuote

one or more esential parameters were not entered. verify the required parameters and reenter them

that's what it told me. Guess i could always do fresh install of OS, ugh You could try to uninstall TCP\IP and reboot and reinstall it.

It sounds LIKE your TCP stack is corrupted.

i can tryno go, still stumped, System RESTORE works wonders. Still don't understand why it did that. But i do appreciate the help guys. Good going

I have a Presario Notebook 2100US. XP Pro. When I plug in a router cable I get this blinking message in the tool bar area (network cable unplugged). I know the cable and router CONNECTION are good. Also, there are no 'question marks' in device manager. The internet works fine with a PCMCIA wireless card but I would like to have the Cat 5 connection working so I can have the PCMCIA available. Can't seem to find any help on the HP site.
THANKS, Don You say you KNOW the cable is good? Well, do you have a PCMCIA ethernet card you can try to SEE if that works?
If it does, then you can try removing and reinstalling the drivers for your onboard card and see if that solves the issue. If that doesn't do it you might have a faulty onboard NIC. Have you ever had the laptop connected via the NIC anywhere else? Do you know the NIC is good?I've been getting the same message on my Dell 8300 desktop. I've been in contact w/Dell and my DSL provider. They keep POINTING the blame finger at each other. I've replaced the cable, tried different ports, etc. Needless to say I'm STILL seeing the same message. I just returned from buying a wireless USB adapter hoping that if a get rid of the CAT5 cable the message will stop.
I'm pretty much flying by the sit of my pants...and suggestions/comments would be appreciated

Solve : Problem with Windows Vista program used to connect to wireless modem?

Answer»

Okay, so I used to have an older computer (with XP) and I used a Linksys 802.11g USB Network adapter to connect to the various modems around my house (we have three internet connections - one wired, two wireless). The Linksys adapter came with its DRIVERS, but the same CD also installed a Linksys program which you could use to see and connect to your wireless modems. I really liked this program and it worked great.

A few months ago I bought a new HP computer with Windows Vista Home Premium. When I went to INSTALL the Linksys adapter on that computer, Vista downloaded the drivers for it no problem. But INSTEAD of using the Linksys program I mentioned above, Vista is using its own "Connect to a network" program and I can't even figure out how to make it use the Linksys one. Don't get me wrong, it does allow me to connect to the internet, but the Linksys program had more features and was more USER FRIENDLY. Also, the Vista program doesn't seem to always pick up all of my wireless networks whereas the Linksys one always did.

I'm not sure if you really need a whole lot of information about my computer's hardware or anything. I'm just assuming it's a Vista problem...

If you need to know more then just let me know. I'd just really like it if Vista didn't use its own program as a default...

Thanks,
Chris

Where you set up two networks? On one computer?i dont really know im an idiot. but i setup one network named "Sullivan Network" and my laptop was unable to detect it. so i tried to set it up again and left it "dlink". now when i can connect there is both Sullivan and dlink networks.

Solve : Dynex Network Card?

Answer»

I'm having trouble with my DYNEX wireless network card it was working FINE I bought it in september at first my signal was at 48MPS. Soon after that my computer broke and I got another computer and my singal was alot less like 11MPS I RECENTLY THO upgraded to vista and my singal was boosted back up to 48Mbps. MY hardrive recently crashed and I got a new emachine I put my card in it and its getting 11MBPS but my web sites wont pop up. I checked the properies on the card and found out that the packets sent are much less than packets received for example my packets sent are 185 and my packets receieved are 1. Do you know how to fix this.I figuered out I have a bad IP adress I fixed my card it was getting better but this morning my IP adress was diffrent I tried to release it but it gave me the same one back. IS their anyway to get a new IP adress? You'll have to call your ISP. Only they can change it.change the MAC address on the router. if your ISP assigns IP's based on MAC addresses, you will get a new IP.

Solve : no joy wifi with new xps m1330 at public library.?

Answer»

Hi there,

I just GOT my new dell and went to the library today. 2 other wifiers happily pecking along and for me, nada. They had XP, I have vista. I went through and tried all the repair/diagnose stuff for an hour. It says it has limited connectivity however the signal strength is EXCELLENT and it shows its connected at 56kbs. Packets sent but none recieved. Also tried starting browser as instructed. Any IDEAS?okay, first of all, are you burrowing or STEALING wireless router from other people ? If so you might WANT to try using this.
ipconfig/renew, I have some problem with limited connectivity sometimes cause I sometimes use other people router, so it might work or not, if not, you should try to get your own wireless router, that is what I recommend.

Solve : I want to detect my router maker name and model number?

Answer»

Dear User
I have cable net is there is any software from which i can detect the router model NAME and maker from my PC
ThanksSoftware? I've never heard of one that detects router makes and MODELS.
Why not just access the configuration of the router (usually a web INTERFACE), it should tell you the make and model.
If you don't know how to access the web interface, do a ipconfig -all and note the IP for the DEFAULT gateway. Enter the IP in a browser and voilà.
An even easier way would be to physically look at your router. The make and model should be written somewhere on it.

Solve : Unable to view any pages in browser?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a Dell dimension 2400 with a dial-up internet connection using one phone line. I was using the internet when I started to be unable to see any webpages. I checked with both firefox and IE, and both say that the server/website cannot be found. Another computer using the same connection but a different port is able to view websites. I have had similar problems before, but disconnecting, and then connecting again WOULD FIX it, which hasn't worked this time. I am able to connect to the internet normally, I am just not able to access websites. Also, trend MICRO is unable to detect a connection.
Thanks.Quote

What port are we talking about?Sorry, I meant wall jack.Try phone jack, which WORKS.Ok, I tested both the phone jack and the cord which the computer is using, and they both work.Sir, did you try to connect your computer to the phone jack used by other computer, which CAN connect?check the IP address of your computerQuote
check the IP address of your computer
Why?Sorry, I don't think I'll be able to use the computer with the other phone jack. But I have some new information now.

I can now use the internet normally, but occasionally it will stop working, but only after I have been using the internet for a while. Then I have the same problem with not being able to view any web pages and no programs being able to get a signal from the internet. When I disconnect and then reconnect it does not fix the problem, but when I disconnect, restart the computer, and then reconnect, it works again. From what I am reading it looks to me like you may have a bad modem, try installing an external modem and see if that FIXES your problem.

Solve : Sharing Wireless Internet Connection Between Laptop and Xbox 360?

Answer»

I am running on Vista Home version.

I just got this NEW laptop and I can't seem to share my internet connection with my xbox 360.

I have wireless internet on the laptop and an ethernet cable running from my laptop to the xbox.

I got the connection to share, but it won't identify the connection and says that it is "Local Only".

When troubleshooting on xbox live, it says that there is a problem with the IP.

I'm kind of lost on what to do now, but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Try bridging the two interfaces instead.
I gave it a shot, and it signed me in and everything.

It made my laptop GO crazy though. It wouldn't identify my wireless NETWORK anymore and SAID that there was a IP conflict.

It took me about a half hour to get BACK online.Hmm sounds strange, it should work.
http://bimmergeek.blogspot.com/2006/05/configuring-network-bridge-for-xbox.html
It is the preferred method if you do have to go through a computer. You will never be able to get a fully connectible status if you use ICS.

Do you have any firewalls installed? The only firewalls I have are the ones that come standard with Vista.

It keeps saying something about an IP address conflict.Have you configured a static IP anywhere?I'm not sure.

On purpose? NoCheck your network interfaces is set to get an IP automatically and make sure the Xbox is as well.

Solve : Connecting two computers to internet?

Answer»

I have two computers that I am trying to connect to the internet. I have cable internet, so the internet connection runs through the modem. Because I want to connect both using the ethernet, I went and bought a Dynex 5 PORT 10/100 ethernet switch. I connected everything and I got a connection on my Sony, however I couldn't get anything on my Dell. After trying for a while to fix it, I just connected the Dell straight to the modem (like I usually would), and now I do not get any connection at all. My Sony works fine connected to the modem, so I know that is not the problem. I have no idea what to do. Please help. You haven't really posted enough information here to SAY anything conclusive but I'm guessing the problem is you need a router instead of switch to get both of the computers online at the same time.
But before you run out and buy a router COULD you POST the make and model of your modem?well it was from Brighthouse. It's an Arris TM502G if that's any helpOkay it seems the Arris TM502G is a modem only and not a modem/router combo.
So you will most likely need a router in order to share your internet connection.
If you want to be absolutely sure before buying yet another piece of gear you should call your ISP and ask them if a router is need for you to have more than one computer online.wat ISP r u using?I AGREE with Deerpark...you need a router. What troubles me is when you connected the Dell directly to the modem it didn't work like your Sony did.

Did you reboot the Dell after connecting it direct?

Alan <>< ahousholder, u should call ur ISP and ask about a new modem that is a router then u can connect both of ur comps to the net.

I tagged on "cash_fan1" s topic call for help, I FOUND the same problem, as I could not Connect to Banks and Government Websites.
I contacted my ISP and on their advise, removed the following:

AD-WARE

and leave AVG and Windows Defender.

This did not solve the problems yet, as there were two obstacles to fix:
msg 0x800106a - Windows Defender
msg 0x800b0001 - Windows Update

Windows Defender had to be removed.
Installed a series of DLL's. under REGSVR32 XXXXX.DLL
Then re-installed a fresh copy of (free) Windows Defender.
Then ran MS Windows Update.

Problem Solved.

Any help?Is your computer connecte to the modem or router?

Where you able to play warcraft before? mybe your school server bloack the ports for the warcraft gameI had no problems with warcraft before. I emailed the university ADMIN and they have told me they have not touched the servers in any way. Furthermore, my mates at the same hostel CAN join games, but I can't. All servers are WIN2K and all workstations are XP ProI used the command "w32tm /resync"to get the computer to see the domain servers but half of the computers are setting to the correct time and half are updateing to an hour ahead. Any thoughts?I have made recommended REG edits and added some time set script to my LOGON scripts and tried several other things and I still have some computers off by an hour a head or behind. Please help.Have to edited the registry on your servers to change the dates for daylight savings?

If you did than you need to change the time zone that they are set in to any other time zone. Save the change and close out. Than open the time zone editor by clicking on the clock and change it back to your time zone and save and close. This should get your servers to see the right time. You workstations are getting there time from your server.

Solve : Why am I getting Verizon Wall Garden Message??

Answer»

So why am I getting this message?

I am on my laptop, and I have an unsecured Wireless G ROUTER. I was going online fine until my sister VAIO started getting the message. We called Verizon, they said call our cable company. We did and Cablevision said contact Linksys...

So I call them up and the lady says to unplug the router and see if I can get online...I did and my connection was STILL CONNECTED, but when I tried going online I got the Verizon NO ACCESS message and said I cannot go on.

I connected an ethernet cable straight from the router to my laptop(which is how i'm online right now) but my sis is out of luck, and the ethernet chord is only so long.

I am also trying to secure the router, but when I go through the setup is says it can't connect after I choose the WEP code...I am lost.

Any serious help would be appreciated.

hello i wiped a computer for a friend and sold it to him and when i hooked it up to his house the internet did not work so i installed the driver and then it still did not work at all. In the boot tray the icon keeps switching between connecting and unable to connect. So i decied to try to fix it at my house, i hooked everything up and tryed the internet at my house and it works fine

Can any1 think of why it is not working at his house??

AND he hooked his old computer up after i unhooked mine that i sold him and his internet works fine on his old computer!!!Wireless or wired LAN connection?I have a wireless router but i am using Wired Lan and so does my friendI had a feeling you were going to "say" that.

Connection loss on a wired LAN connection...but not on both computers...take the computer back, plug it into a different LAN, no problems...hmmm...

I don't have a lot of LAN experience...I need to think about this some more...make sure that the DHCP is ENABLED on your friends router.
have you tried a diff. ethernet cables?
Good call, SKIPPER -- I was assuming he checked the cables...we all know what assuming gets you...he doesnt have a router just a modem and no we didnt try a different ethernet cable but would that matter SINCE he hooked his old computer up with the same ethernet cable and it worked?Good point. I don't know enough of how to advise you, but did you check the DHCP thingy Mr. Skipper pointed out? I'm still thinking...Who is your internet service provider from your friends house? and what is the BRAND name of the modem? Do each of you USE different providers?no, it depends on the how the ISP setup the modem. We both have eastlink for our ISPwhat is the brand of your modem?

Solve : Router to Router..possible??

Answer»

I have just moved into a new apartment where a roomate has a Belkin WirelessG router in theliving room. I have a desktop in my room (far away) with no WIRELESS card, but i do have a netgear wirelessg router. Can I link my router (that is not linked to the internet) to his Belkin router (connected to modem), and run a hard line from my router to my desktop, and possible my PS3?

Thanks!

RyanIf your talking link the two router wirelessly "NO" its not possible. what you can do is connect your router (netgear) to his router (belkin) using ethernet connection. setup will be like this :

[modem]------[Belkin router]---------[netgear router]thanks! And so if i run en ethernet wire to my Netgear from the Belkin, i can use my router as a HUB? and divide the connection into two? you can still use the router funcution of. all you have to do is connect the belkin router to the WAN port of your router and change the IP of your router and your COMPUTER to the LAN ports of your router. Having two routers both doing routing is a bad idea and is going to make it IMPOSSIBLE for you to be accessible from the internet (which you may need for optimal gaming). A better solution is to connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on your roommate's router to a LAN port on your router.
Then disable the DHCP server on your router (there's a setting somewhere that'll let you do that). This way your router functions as a switch and your roommate's router will do all the routing.
If you need to forward a port you only need to do this on your roommate's router. That is correct. If your fun of playing games online and access secure web site that needs to enable port on the router you need to make your roommates router as the main router and your router act as a switch. Thanks alot guys! Ive gotta buy a long ethernet cable, and Ill try this out. Thanks!Just to clarify...

When you say LAN port, you mean one of the four "outgoing" ports right? I have 5 ethernet ports, 4 for cables leaving my router going to ps3, pc, etc, and one taking in the connection from the router. And you guys are saying I should put the cable from my roomates router into one of those four LAN ports, say Port on1, then a cable from port 2 into my ps3, and a cable from port 3 into my pc, and once i reactivate my DHCP thingy ill be able to use my netgear router as a switch?

And by switch you mean i can use both my ps3 and my pc online, but not at the same time correct?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to work with me.

Solve : Vista can't detect network?

Answer»

I just finished my first barebones computer and am having trouble getting it connected to our home network. The computer is using an Intel D945GCPE motherboard with a Realtek RTL8101 Family PC-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) integrated connection. I tried downloading the driver from Realtek, but when I try to set up a network connection, Vista (64bit) is not detecting the network. We have two other computers hooked up to the network, one of which I am using to post this, so I know the problem is with the computer. What am I doing wrong?check the cables.
have you check the IP address of the Vista computer?
also the try to ping the vista computer with another PC and VICE versa.
Check firewall (disable it if possible)
I have the same ISSUE with my laptop. I use a wireless connection to our network. We have one other laptop/wireless running XP that has no problem finding the network and one desktop PC that is wired.

For the wireless connection, I usually have to turn off the wireless beacon and then turn it back on. Make sure that vista is using the same network name. OK, I feel very stupid. I thought that what was on the motherboard would allow me to connect wired and wirelessly. Can I only connect with an Ethernet connection? I tried installing a Network Adapter Card (Hawking Wireless LAN PCI card) and its driver---still no joy with the same error. No driver was recognized and the device was unidentified under the Device Manager.

Also when I WENT into ipconfig to find the computer's address, I got an error that said:

Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix

Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection *6:
Media State.....: Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix

Any more ideas?Make sure that its properly installed under device manager.

Don't worry about the IPV6

look for the IP address under IPv4
make sure that your router is DHCP is enabled
check the cables make sure its properly plug-in I don't even know how to find IPv4. My router is DHCP enabled and everything's plugged in because I'm using the wireless connection on the computer I'm typing on now.

Device Manager recognizes the Realtek Network adapter and says it is working properly.

I realize that I didn't make it clear that the router is connected to a computer (desktop). The laptop I'm using now is connected wirelessly to the network. I'm trying to add a third computer to the network. It happens to be running Vista instead of XP, like the other two computers.

Could someone tell me if I need to install a card to the computer I'm trying to add since I don't intend to use a wired connection?More information:

I used the DOS command "netsh wlan show all" and DOS says there is no network adapter. How can this be when it shows up functional in Device Manager?

try to ping your NIC card
Solved the problem!! I was missing hardware. I didn't realize the desktop was different than the laptop. I just needed the external wireless adapter. I feel KINDA dumb, but I've never built a computer before.

Solve : 2 computers & 2 non-connects, 1 working, all on same network?

Answer»

I have 3 PCs, 1 modem, 1 wired/wirelss (same) router, and 3 NETGEAR HDX101 Powerline HD Ethernet Adapters

First PC connected via LAN wire to router works fine, no issues
2 & 3 are in another room, connected via HD ethernet adapters.
2 & 3 were working fine until today. Both of them are for internet usage and Piratesonline game playing. I'm WONDERING if this game has affected 2 & 3 as 1 does not play games.
Earlier today, game were not connecting for both computers, and it's been downhill from there.
Now they are both having the same issues.

I have tried to search the forums here and find answers, but have not had success. After many tries, they both SAY they are online, and connected. But I am able to surf about 2 sites, VERY slowly, until they go kaput. For example, BOTH do this: EVERYTHING takes about 30sec to 1 min to access each page - go to yahoo, access mail, open mail, click on first thing inside inbox, error no access page.

I shut down, power cycle modem and router, power cycle HD adapters, start computers, ipconfig /release, ip config /renew. Systems both SHOW they are online, but can access NOTHING.

I've also tried scanning for viruses and have changed my network group and computer names, as that has helped in the past.

HELP!

have you tried changing the card speed of the NIC cardHow do you check or change the card speed of the NIC card?1. right click on the LAN (local area connection) and select properties
2. click on the configure tab
3. then click on the adavance tab
4. look for the media type then change value from the list

Solve : home LAN setup?

Answer»

ok i hve 2 comps(both have ethernet cards) 1 phone line 1 dsl MODEM and 1 5 port switch. the physical setup i can do but how do i configure the dsl modem setting from direct connection (my dsl modem has a ethernet connection jack)
i have both of my comps as their default internet connection as "CONNECT through a lan"
will my dsl modem be able to handle to comps at once?
plz help! oh and also can someone help me on the configuration as well plzNo...you will NEED a router to hand out IP address thru DHCP.

Plug the modems ethernet cable into the router WAN port. Connect your computers to the router. Read your setup manual for the router.

Make sure your network settings are set for Dynamic IP.

Sorry I can't give more detailed info but I'm in the "hit-n-run" mode now

Alan <>< srry my dsl modem is a modem and router in one. What is the brand of your DSL modem and how many port are there at the back? ok it is a Westell Wirespeed DSL Router/Modem it only has one Ethernet port and then it has the phone connection that u plug into the phone line. i called the company and they said it will work but u have to have a network switch and now i have one.mr_skipper24 do u hve the answer? Do the following for me:
Plug one computer directly into the DSL modem, make sure it can get on the internet, now go to Start, Run, and type CMD, press enter.
Now type IPCONFIG and press enter.
Now tell me what it says your ip address is.
If the address is a 192.168.x.x then you don't need a router and IPs are being passed out by the modem. If it's something else then your ISP lied like a *censored* and your modem is not a router.
ok its showning the ip address is 192.168.x.x(cant tell u the rest, its private info) so it is a router.Ok, should be no problem then. Unplug the ethernet cable from that PC and plug it into the Switch. Now plug each of your PCs into the switch.
Go to the network settings on each PC and make sure that TCP/IP properties is set to Automatically Obtain an IP address and DNS servers.
On XP the step by step for that is:
Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, Right Click on LOCAL Area Connection and click Properties, scroll down to TCP/IP and double click it, select Obtain Automatically for both options. Click ok, Click ok.

Now on each PC go to Start, Run, type CMD, press enter, type IPCONFIG, press enter.
Each one should have a 192.168.x.x address. They should all have internet access now as well. If that's not the case then you'll need to log in to your DSL modem/router and make sure the DHCP server is turned on.when you connect one PC to you DSL modem what is the IP address?
Make sure that the DSL is modem is setup as a router (or in router mode) and the DHCP of the modem is enable.
By the way, when you connect your computer to the DSL modem how do you access the internet? do you have a username and password setup on the computer or on the DSL modem?no i have software with the drivers for my dsl modem. it works with networks up to 4 comps. and Emperor its working thanks! No problem. I just helped someone with the exact same problem on another forum.

Solve : sending msgs?

Answer»

i manage a home network and we got 4 WIRELESS laptops connecting to the network..is there away to see on my laptop who is connecting and sendings msgs to whoever connected to the network?open a DOS prompt and type 'net send \\computername "message here"'

that should do the trick. i KNOW about this "net send" command of cmd what i DONT know is how to get the computer IPsHey Lavender,

create a little DOS batch command:

echo --------------ARP -a--------
ARP -a
pause
echo --------end -ARP -a--------

This will give the Internal IP's and Mac's

In this EXAMPLE:
the Interface is YOUR PC.
the first Internet Address is the one PC that is currrently connected to yours.
the second is the Router.

Interface: 192.168.123.100 --- 0x3
Internet Address Physical Address Type
192.168.123.101 00-04-e2-99-8e-c5 dynamic
192.168.123.254 00-c0-49-ed-f8-d0 dynamic
thanks i guess this is one way to do it

Solve : Broadband connection & Physical address problem???

Answer»

Hi, my FIRST time on the forum.

Having problems connecting to internet provider. They have said that they cannoy allocate IPV4 Ip address to allow my connection because the physical address on my COMPUTER is already being used/possibly cloned?

For me to have a connection they advise that I need a new/unique physical address.

Can any one tell me how this can be done?

Can I do it myself or does the company who made my computer have to do it?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

ChrisYou can use macshift to change your preceived MAC address. http://devices.natetrue.com/macshift/1. While I appreciate TheEmperor's advice (and especially the link) to change the "perceived" MAC address, it is problematic.

Change it to what? If you just make one up, you could be passing your problem on to someone else. If you have a MAC address that you won't be using, no problem. Perhaps you could try the MAC address of an old NIC card that you know shouldn't be used (because it's sitting on your shelf).

The MAC address is supposed to be unique throughout the WORLD but sometimes manufacturers (cheap and/or lazy) or users clone them. If you have a reputable brand NAME computer or Network Interface Card (NIC) and feel you are the legitimate owner of that MAC address you could suggest the Internet Service Provider (ISP) ask the "other" customer to provide a "new" MAC. Or ask the ISP what MAC they'd like you to use. Or whether they care if you make one up. They'll probably be no help at all. (Personally I think it's more their problem than yours... What do you care what MAC address you use?)

2. You didn't say whether your NIC is integrated onto your motherboard or a separate expansion card. You could purchase and install a new NIC card (or just use its MAC address).

3. A better solution would be to purchase a router/switch to place between your cable/DSL modem and your PC. Then you would provide the "WAN" MAC address on that device to the ISP. This would provide more protection for your PC because it is not directly exposed to the internet and would allow you to add multiple computers with internet access.Previous post contains all of the things I would have tried before coming on to a forum to ask about MAC address changing. Silly me, I made the assumption that the original poster would have either tried those things or dismissed them as possibilities for one reason or another before asking here.
You are indeed correct sir.

Try all of the things mentioned in dahlarbear's post BEFORE you go monkeying with your MAC address.

Solve : Basic rundown on how networks work.?

Answer»

I am going to do a basic rundown of the basics of networking.

How does an IP address work?
When you connect to a network and you open your browser you have the same external IP address as another computer on your network.
What happens when you connect to your network is you connect to the router and the router connects to the internet. Your computer never gets close to the internet.
When you are on the network you have your default gateway ip which allows computers on a network to communicate to each other. While you connect the routers do the same thing.

for example on your network your computers ip is "192.168.0.10" but the ip of your router is "11.11.11.15".
its like handing your friend a letter to give to your friend.

What is a port?

A port is a open section your computer uses to interact with the internet. A port has to have a service to open it, if it doesn't have a service it isn't open.

while we talk about ports it is a good thing to mention 3 types of services. Applications, Servers, Protocols.
A application is what you use to connect to the internet (like mozilla or internet explorrer.) a server is what you connect to. A protocol is a list of rules for the tcp/ip to run by.

A few things are all 3, FTP and telnet are the first to pop up in my mind.

Setting up your router.

With networking comes the router. The router is what LETS you connect to the internet.
To LOG in to the internet you need to type your default gateway into the urlbox in the browser.
(to find the default gateway go to start | run | type cmd | type ipconfig and hit enter.)
once you type it in you will get a popup box. Normally the password is admin, admin, but sometimes it is: superuser, password.
Once you are on there is a password section. This is where you add a password to your router. Add a "wep" password. Once you are done click on save.

There should be a admin panel or logs panel, this is where you can view the ips on the network and MAC addresses.
You can see the ip of the websites that are visited on the network and more.

If someone is on your network you don't want on it go to "mac filter" or "filtering" and you can add the mac address of the computer on here. This will ban them from the router which wont let them online.
This is also the section you can block websites from being entered. If you have a child you want to protect you can add some words on there to block.

I hope this helps,
S_R_SA guy might wanna add that a router is only necessary when more than one computer is sharing a local area network. (One exception is using a router as a "firewall" to help shield your computer from nefarious "crackers" on the Internet.) The router acts as "traffic cop" / postal worker to route data packets between the various computers sharing the network and the network access POINT (be it cable modem, DSL modem, T1 line. (Me? I want at least OC768 [oc = optical carrier] or the equivalent of 768 megabits per second capacity, but that probably won't happen for a long time!)

Solve : connected and sent but not recieved?

Answer»

I have a wireless networking CARD. I have bought and tried other cards and run into the same problem. There is a network in a nearby city park which is available and free. My computer should automatically connect to it.

That being said my computer connects and registers that it is being sent packages but it doesn't register as recieving them.

Consequently I don't have access.

I have CONSULTED friends in the computer industry with no luck

any help someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Have you check the IP address of the computer?

Tell us, if you will, what kind of SCREENS you get when you try to access the public network. For example, in my area, I can go to PANERA Bread restaurants or Caribou Coffee "restaurants" and use their local wi-fi access for free. (The bastiges at McDonald's, Barnes & NOBLE, and Starbucks consider this a "service" for which they gladly charge, but I digress...) In either case, I get a Panera page or a Caribou page in the browser. Once I signed up for the service (no charge) I was able to surf the 'net from their respective home pages. Is there a similar setup for the service which you're trying to access?

Solve : Trouble Connecting With Belkin 54G Router?

Answer»

I have the same router and have had that problem several times. Reset by unplugging the power for approx 10sec. (Im sure someone wrote that in comments above I didnt read them).

I use the dynamic IP and WPA/PSK w/NAT enabled. Also back up your router settings. Belkin routers have this nature in them to LOOSE connections sometimes and it almost seems that the BIOS or ROM chip fails sometimes. Might also change the wireless channel. That did help on my signal strength and it doesnt seem to loose the CONNECTION as often. Hello there, litespeed14.

Thanks for the advice but unfortunately...

I tried all you SAID and my status in the corner turned into "Not Connected" after I set it to a dynamic IP setting. So I restored and I'm back to scratch. It says I'm connected but I still can't OPEN any pages.

Anyone have any other suggestions?I'm sorry, can anyone help?Who is you Internet Service Provider? what is the brand name of your modem?
Have you tried turning OFF the modem and router wait like a minute then turn ON the modem 1st wait for 30SEC before you power ON the router...
What is the internet IP address on the router? Yes, I have tried that - no results.

ISP - Local Providers
Brand - Belkin 54g
IP - 192.168.2.1

Solve : 2 modems 1 house?

Answer»

Hi,
is it possible to have 2 modems in 1 house, because I've put my modem upstairs so that my computer doesn't have poor connection, but it's effected everything downstairs (the WII, the computer, Xbox 360)

This is the modem I have at the moment
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-DG834G-54Mbps-Wireless-Firewall/dp/B0000TZ8Z8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1218654210&sr=8-1

ThanksTo use two modems, you have to have two separate accounts with your ISP.i was looking AROUND and i sore some wall-plugged wireless signal BOOSTERS
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-WGXB102-Wall-Plugged-Wireless-Extender/dp/B000ENOR3E/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1218792179&sr=8-17

will they do the trick Personally, I can't answer your question, because I've never used one.Truthfully, it depends on what type of wireless you are running. Is it B, G, N? it will say on your wireless router. How old is the router? If its quite old, sometimes its actually cheaper and more efficient to just buy a newer, BETTER router.the modem isn't over a year old

That B G N must be an American thing I can't find anywhereIm sorry i should have made that a little clearer. But, from what you are saying, it is probably wireless G. But, i had asked a few people about the range expanders, and they said it works like a charm. Give that a shot, it should defenitely give you a much better range Thanks I'll give that a go then

Solve : Vista Networking Restart?

Answer»

SCENARIO:
Connected Lynksys Router to XP machine and Modem. Software CD that came with it would not load in CD Rom and failed to connect to internet.
Ran update, found Lynksys software and installed it. Now I have internet after running the setup on XP.

Put CD in Vista and ran setup, but again it would not recognize the software. Used windows networking to find internet connection. Connected to Network then Vista restarts.

Did a restore and GOT rid on internet connections. Vista is working, performed the following:

Setting namespace security using WMI Control
The WMI Control provides one way to manage namespace security. You can start the WMI Control from the command prompt using this command:
wmimgmt
On Windows 9x or Windows NT4 computers that have WMI installed, type this command instead:
wbemcntl.exe
Alternatively, you can access the WMI Control and the Security tab by doing the following:
1. Right-click on My Computer and click Manage.

2. Double-click Services and Applications and then double-click WMI Control.

3. Right-click WMI Control and then click Properties.

4. In the WMI Control Properties dialog box click the Security tab.

5. A folder named Root with a plus sign (+) next to it should now be visible. Expand this tree as necessary to locate the namespace for which you want to SET permissions.

6. Click the Security button. A list of users and their permissions appears. If the user is on that list, modify the permissions as appropriate. If the user is not on the list, click the Add button, and add the user from the LOCATION (local machine, domain, etc.) where the account resides.

Same result, tried this:

1. Start -> Right-click on "Computer" -> Manage
2. Double click "Services and Applications"
3. Right-click on "WMI Control" and select "Properties" -> select "Security" at the top
4. Select the CIMV2 directory in the root tree and click on "Security" at the bottom
5. Again ensure that your user account has full administrative rights
6. Select your user account and click on "Advanced"
7. On the permissions tab again select your user account and click "Edit"
8. At the top here you'll see your network path as "Name" and underneath you'll see "Apply to:" -> Set this to "This namespace and subnamespaces"

Same result. Vista is added on XP network but anytime Vista tries to access internet it restarts.

These are some event errors I get on vista:

dcom got error "1068"attempting to start the service netprofm with ARGUMENTS ""inorder to run the server: a47979d2-c419-11d9-a5b4-001185ad2b89

unable to initialize the security package kerberos for server side authentication the data field contains the error number.

event filter with query "select*from_instancemodificationevent within 60 where targetinstance isa"win32_processor" and target instance.load percentage >99"could not be ACTIVATED in namespace "//./root/cimv2" because of error 0x8004003 events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

and I got plenty more in the event viewer.

If anyone has any info on this please let me know.

I have been working on this all day and part of yesterday with little progress.

Solve : Wireless Disconnects my Network?

Answer»

I'm not really sure when it started but I have a network with 2 computers connected to my router via ethernet cords and a laptop connected via wireless card and everytime my husband connects with the laptop (ether starts the laptop up or opens it from standby) it causes my entire network to hiccup for about 60 seconds.

I have comcast cable
SB5100 SURFboard Cable Modem
TRENDnet TEW-432BRP Wireless Router
and the laptop has a Belkin F5D7010 Wireless-G PC-Card Notebook Adapter

I appreciate any help on this as it's getting to be rather frustrating.

~ Steph

Does it still HAPPEN if the laptop is connected via cable?Unfortunately the laptops ethernet plug isn't working for me to test. So I don't know. Can you try the laptop in another wireless environment to make sure its not a fault with the laptop itself?
OR
Can you try another wireless device to SEE if it's a problem with the wireless router?Thank you for the reply's,
I don't have another wireless environment that I would be able to monitor to check if it is the laptop.
I've tried another wireless card and it doesn't disconnect the network but it get a really bad connection or I would just use it instead of the one that's disconnecting us.
When you say it is getting bad connection, how far away is it from the Wireless Router and what is between you and the router?Just down the hall, in the other room. Not very far at all, not even a door a wall in the way. Sometimes it would even get a CRUMMY connection sitting right next to the router and d/c every couple mins. It's why we switched.
I'm not sure but I don't think this new one did this from the beginning, but then again it could just have not been apparent.
I'm really hoping I can fix this with some sort of setting or whatnot as I really don't want to shell out any more on wireless cards.
Thanks for the help so far tho My FIRST suggestion would be to try the laptop SOMEWHERE else with wireless internet (to make sure it isn't the computer that is having problems)

One more question, what are you doing when you connect?
I know that downloading torrents can drastically slow down your internet.
