Solve : Setting up home network help?

Answer»

Hello

Can someone please walk me through how to set up a wireless home network please?

I basically just want to be able to transfer files between my laptop & PC.

I have tried the 'set up a home or SMALL office network' task but it didn't work, I see nothing under 'my network places' on the laptop & a 'network is not accessible. You might not have permission (blah...blah...blah) the network path was not found' so I'm obviously doing something wrong.

I have XP on both computers, pro on the PC & Home on the laptop (if relevant).I ran the wizard again on the PC & this time I got a SharedDocs folder appear in the laptop's 'My Network Places'.

But shouldn't I see the PC's shared folder ASWELL in the same place? I also have only a SharedDocs folder on the PC for that system.

So how do I transfer files ? ? ?1. SneakerNet. If you need to transfer files immediately, the old "SneakerNet" works well with a USB thumb drive (aka flash drive). Write the required files to a USB device, put on your sneakers, walk it over to the other computer, and read the files from the USB device. But that wasn't your question...

2. I understand that you want to share files between computers. It's not clear from your description whether you have a "Local Area Network (LAN)", "file sharing", or "wireless connectivity" problem.

3. I'm assuming this is a home network. What is your network configuration?
Internet (WAN connection) -->
Cable/DSL Modem -->
Wireless Router -->
PC wired to router (connected by ethernet cable)
laptop wireless to router (no cable)
or:
Wireless Router -->
PC wireless to router (no cable)
laptop wireless to router (no cable)
or:
PC wireless to laptop wireless (no cables - adhoc wireless connection)

or something else.

4. Windows XP Home uses "simple" file sharing. Windows XP Professional uses either "simple" or "advanced" file sharing. I believe you should set it to "simple" if you want to share back and forth with the Windows XP Home computer. Because you used the Wizard (and they never reveal their secrets), I don't know what it was trying to do... But it can be setup manually.

5. If you want to do some reading, here are some Microsoft documents on the subject.

Yes, the topic title does read "Setting up HOME NETWORK help" afterall.

No, I don't.

Thanks for your 'help'.You might want to look at the documents that were posted by dahlarbear. They are a good place to start to understand how to get this working.

In general you want to enable file sharing on both machines than make sure that they are in the same work group. You will have to check your firewall settings to be sure that it isn't blocking access to each machine.

The details of how to do this are in the documents posted by dahlarbear. Give it a try and if you RUN into errors come back here and post them. We will help you troubleshoot them.
There are also some great tutorials on how to set up your network. Here are a few i have used to help me. Alos try google.

Solve : Netgear WNR834B and Nintendo DS Blues?

Answer»

I am trying to set up my Netgear WNR834B with my Nintendo DS but I keep getting a error message like: 52001 (Cannot get I.P. Address, check DHCP settings) when I try to connect. I know that the problem is that I am using 802.11g, but how do I change it so that it is not using 802.11g? My WIRELESS configuration settings are:

Account Name WNR854T
Firmware Version 1.4.23NA

Internet PORT
MAC Address 00:18:4D:23:A8:87

DHCP DHCP Client
DOMAIN Name Server

LAN Port
MAC Address 00:18:4D:23:A8:86

DHCP ON

Wireless Port

Region United States
Channel Auto
Mode Up to 145 Mbps
Wireless AP ON
Broadcast Name Enabled
There should be a mode setting somewhere that allow you to CONFIGURE the router to use both b and g mode.Jonathan, please delete the following informations from your post:

Internet Port - IP Address

Wireless Port: SSID Mary (this is your private network, don't tell us how you named it). But only if nothing in your network asks you to broadcast SSID. If nothing asks you to do this, than disable "Broadcast Name".

router manual: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WNR834B_RM_18May06.pdf

See at page 3-6 the "mode" option. You may change from there to 54 Mbps (802.11 g) or 11 Mbps (802.11 b) standards.Should I use this setting (11 b/g/n Mixed mode)? Will this correct the problem? Because, when I set it to this, my computer can't connect to it anymore. This is the setting that I am using (11n Max Speed)Yes I would recommend mixed mode, this would give you the highest level of compatibility.
What error message is your computer giving you if you turn on mixed mode?
I am getting a message that my router is still using 802.11 g.... after I set my router to mixed. But I usedto get a limited or no connectivity message. So what?
Is your computer able to connect to the access point?
Is the DS?Sadly, the "Connect To A Netwotk" screen still lists my CONNECTION as '802.11g'. The connection is not changing for some reason, so the DS is not working yet. If it matters, I am still getting a 52001 Error Message: Cannot obtain I.P. address, check DHCP settings, but there are no definite DHCP settings in my connection... I also am getting a 52002 error message. If I enter all of the I.P. stuff, I get a conncted to the access point but cannot connect to Nintendo WFC or I get a Cannot connect to access point message.Am I being ignored now...?

I'm having a problem with opening ports 9896, 16000-16999, and 119.
I virus on my computer has permanently disabled my firewall, so I can't do it from there.
I have a wi-fi connector that hi-jacks my neighbors internet, but when I go to my "network connections" thing, it isn't listed. Also(not sure if this helps), The virus has also disabled my control panel(saying there are restrictions in effect and I need to contact the admin, even though I am the admin).

Is there a way I can configure my wi-fi connector to unblock those ports?
I have tried looking online for a program that will do it automatically, but as far as I know, they only scan which are open or not etc.

Help would be greatly appreciated
Maybe, you should worry about the infection, first?

Solve : Wireless Network combined with wired?

Answer»

I currently have a wired network with a SERVER running Windows Server 2000, I was given 20 new PCs that need to be connected wirelessly.
I know I have to get a wireless NIC for my server, do I need any other HARDWARE?

I'm still a beginner at this so if anyone could help that would be great!

Thank youNo, you don't need a wireless NIC for server. You need an access point (connected through a wire to the rest of the wired network) and a wireless NIC for each computer that will be connected by wireless to your network. As access point you may use a wireless router that can be set up to work only as an access point (PLEASE CHECK this detail before ACQUIRING a wireless router).

Thanks, do you know any good makes of wireless routers?
Any known brand: Linksys, D-Link, Belkin, will do.

Solve : modem issue?

Answer»

friend has a computer the operating system is xp professional and i was told to deleted or uninstall both the modems listed and now the computer does not recognize them and install them it asks me to pick on what can i do to fix this i have to use a public computer since i do not own one so any information would be help ful thank you Quote

i was told to deleted or uninstall both the modems listed
What was the original problem?
Are those internal modems, and are you on DIAL-up? Why two modems?Make and model of modem(s)?the problem was the modem was not functional it is one modem and i don't know if it was the correct one when i looked at it the computer has never been connected to the internet the person that gave it to my friend said he went through the cable company for the internet and connected the box to the computer. the modem looks like it should be dial up it has a phone jack in the back of it i ran a program called pc wizard and it never listed the modem Hold on.

How does your friend connect to internet? He uses the modem? What is the model of the modem? (Rob asked you and you didn't answer...)

i don't know the model NUMBER i unistalled it through the computer and now it makes me choose from a list someone told me that there was a program called siwi where can i download it from anyone know PLEASE use proper punctuation. You posts are extremely hard to read as all the sentences run into each other.

Alan <>< my friend has never connected to the modem. the computer does not detect the modem since i was told to uninstall it. the operating system is windows xp what do i need to do the wizard does not detect the modem it makes me choose from a list and how can i tell which one is right. i do not remember the one that was not working it is a dial up has a place in the back of the card for a phone cord. Open the DEVICE manager and delete the modem.

shut the machine down and pull the modem out and CHECK the make and model than download the latest drivers from the manufacturer

Boot the machine without the modem in it.

Shut the machine down

Install the modem and boot the machine. When it says found new hardware don't pick it from the list. Use the drivers you just downloaded to install the modem.

After its done do a final reboot and than open the device manager and see what state the modem is set at. Does it have a red X or a yellow question mark? If not try to use it to connect to your ISP

i can not open the case my friend does not want to do that he is afraid it will mess up the computer how can i get the computer to detect the modem?Bring it to a computer repair shop.

certain websites such as this one and google, work super quick.... others like majorgeeks, espn, and more take what seems like dial-up forever!Unfortunately, you'll have to open your computer case, and look at your ethernet card.
Here, it explains why: http://www.cnet.com.tw/download/pro200wl.htm
After you identify P/N number, download appropriate driver, and leave it alone.

Go Start>Run, type in:
devmgmt.msc
Click OK.

In Device Manager, go to Network Adapters, right click on CNet FAST200WL PCI Wake On LAN Fast Ethernet Adapter, click Properties, then Driver tab.
Click on Uninstall button.
After uninstall is completed, go to freshly downloaded file, unzip it, and double click on setup.exe file to began installation.

P. S. This is very old product, so all the above procedure may have no positive effects.i did this last night and NO change....... guess it has to be the router.

why is netgear making ME pay to ship the product because its defective?
is there any way around this???I'd try new ethernet card, first, since yours is rather ancient one.

Solve : Encryption Pass?

Answer»

ok im trying to connect to my network the problem is my brother set it up i don't know the password and my brother for some reason no longer ANSWERS emails. While trying to connect to the network i have to choose from 3 encryption types and on 2 of them i have to choose from a 64 bit or 128 bit...something. and to make things worse the COMPUTER that has the modem and sends the signal is Win 2K SP4 and i cant find any sort of thing to help me find this encryption KEY it doesn't even know that its connected to a Netgear router. i have an idea on the password because i remember my brother told me when he made it but its only 6 characters long so theres another PART. how can i find the pass code and encryption TYPE? It is against forum policy to provide information which relates to the cracking of passwords.

You might try the ideas you have in mind.

I grant you, we don't know all the situation regarding your family, but one would think you have other ways of contacting your brother to obtain the password.

Solve : A usb connector disables my internet??

Answer»

I don't KNOW if this exactly the best place to put this but, up until recently, I USED a usb connector to connect to my Wii gaming console. But now, when I connect it, it DISABLES my internet service. The nintendo tech's told me to find my default gateway and change it, that it would be a xxx.xxx.x.x number, but I see a xx.xxx.xxx.x number instead. I don't know how to change it because I use a modem and a pci card built into the back of my processor to connect to the internet. I have a wireless router, but for WHATEVER reason I can connect without it. And I have tried using it only just so it's known. I really need some HELP. You'll have to forgive me but from what I read above I don't fully understand the issue. Some additional questiosn that should help us help you.

Is this USB cable you're using going from the Wii to the Computer?
What version of Windows are you using on the computer?
Are you loosing Internet connection on your Wii or your Computer or both?

The connector is like a flash drive, I connect it to my computer's usb port. So there's no cable running from the Wii to the computer.

I'm using Windows XP SP2.

I loose connection on my computer and my Wii never has connected because it won't detect my usb connector and for whatever reason the usb connector disables my computer's internet service.Unfortunately I'm not too sure what would be causing this issue. Hopefully one of our other members has a suggestion on this issue.

Solve : netgear or belkin??

why was my netgear mimo faster by far than my new belkin mimo on my ps3?Could distance or bandwidth USAGE be a factor? No. Both were in the same spot and nothing else being used at the time. Youtube songs on the netgear would download in about 20 seconds. On the belkin probably 3 minutes.check your SETTINGS. It could be that the belkin unit defaults to a slower wifi SIGNAL. You MIGHT have to turn on the higher speeds.I'll give that a try.

Solve : Setting up a network using Microsoft Business Server?

Answer»

I work in an office which is about to get a new system in on our computers..
Its called Conveylink.
Before this though we've been told of how our computers need to be networked using 'Microsoft Business Server 2000 or 2003'
I have scoured all SORTS of websites trying to obtain this and have failed to find anything.

Can anyone elaborate on this problem and explain to me exactly what 'Microsoft Business Server' actually is?

also known as Windows Server 2003
What are all the software requirements?1.Check the Minimum Requirements for ConveyanceLink
Software
§Microsoft Windows XP or above
§Microsoft Office 2003 or above
§Microsoft .NET Framework 2

HARDWARE
§Pentium 3 650Mhz CPU
§At least 1GB RAM recommended
§At least 100MB free HDD space

Server
§Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 or Microsoft Small Business Server 2003
§Must have Internet Information Services (IIS) 5 or above installed
§Due to compatibility issues, Windows Vista machines cannot be used as servers/host machines
TCP ports 80 and 1433 must be open inbound and outbound for CL8 to be able to synchronise with our server to keep the Progress website up-to-date and to send out texts and emails.

We have GOT all the requirments for software and hardware, it's just the server requirements....
According to those requirements you can use a Windows XP Pro box as the server.Windows XP Pro(fessional?) Box, what exactly is this?By the Way, this pack is going to be on approx' 7 or 8 computers, which i haven't had networked yet (although i'm led to believe that this isn't the most difficult of jobs)

But it's just the server requirements i struggle to understand..Quote from: ace11 on June 03, 2008, 03:22:10 PM

Windows XP Pro(fessional?) Box, what exactly is this?
A computer running Windows XP Professional

According to the requirements you posted, just about any computer running Windows XP Professional can be set up as the conveyancelink server.
Cheers, much appreciated.
I seem to have misunderstood it and interpreted it as 'Windows XP Pro' AND 'a small business server;' not one or the other.

Now the only problem is to network the 8 or 9 PCs.
How difficult a job is this?
Is there anywhere(ie. a website) you could refer me to for step by step instructions on how to do this, or even explain in basic terms what i would need to do?How is your network set up now? Is it a workgroup or domain? Is there a requirement for the software? To be honest, I strongly recommend looking at hiring a professional to at least get the network setup and running for you at this point. You'll save a lot of time and effort in the long run by having things done right the first time.
You are clearly inexperienced (no offense to you, but you are.) and that means you WILL miss some things and it will take you 5 times as long to get the network setup as it would a pro. If that's not an option for you then be prepared to do a lot of reading and a lot of troubleshooting to get everything working.ace11, you'll only need a switch with more ports than computers. Try to find a high quality one.
I assumed you want to connect into network using wires, that means ethernet cables. I also assumed that those computers need cables shorter than 100 meters, they are not further than 100 meters from the switch/router.
To have internet connectivity on all those computers you need a cheap router if you don't need to have many simultaneous transfers. When I say cheap I don't mean a 20 dollars router, a "for home" router. A "pro" router and a good quality switch. Please see Cisco offer for example.

I agree with TheEmperor.

Why? Nothing devious I hope...

I want to learn , how to access remote computer.Remote access is simple.in as much your pc and the remote pc are running the same OS .
Assuming you want to posses or WORK on another persons system on a network. You have to first enable remote connection on your system and the intended remote system.loraandbush, this is a most basic question. Is this a homework? Please tell me it isn't.

To access a remote computer: it depends on the type of service you wish to access. If you want to PING that computer, if there is no FIREWALL that blocks ICMP transfers, issue the ping command and you accessed that remote computer. You need the remote computer IP.
This was an example. It answers your question?
You may want to access a remote computer to see it's shares, a web page (if it is a web server), a ftp server, a mail server etc

How to access Router settings?

Quote

Change the "Basic transmission" to 1-2 mbps, and the TX rate to 2mbps. This is typically done by LOGGING in to the router's setup UTILITY, click on the "Wireless Tab," and then the "Advanced Wireless Settings" sub-tab directly below it.
How exactly do I do this? I'm using a linksys WRT54G with windows XPOh, and while you're in the router, change the PASSWORD from the DEFAULT "admin" or "password." Anyone who WANTS to attack your router will try those first!I mean like "HOW" do I do this. Like from my PC???You open your browser, and type in: http://192.168.1.1 in address bar.

Solve : Dumb question?

Answer»

I'm new to this networking thing. At my job we have around 9 computers networked through a server. Boss was b*tching at me cos of my screensaver, he reckons that when it's running it slows down every puter on the network. Is this true? Or is he just p*ssed off at what it shows *, LOL. Oh, and does my having a few things on my desktop also slow down the network, or is that more BS?
Thanks in advance folks,
Lorri
* I run the XP screensaver which scrolls thru my pictures, one of which says 'Let me DROP everything and work on YOUR problem' something that I think the boss takes personally, LOL.Add a screen that states: The first myth of management is that it exists! (This greatly offended my operations manager at the time.)

I am not completely qualified to answer the question. Others here will TELL you for sure, but my instinct is the same as yours: most individual computer functions will not slow down the network.Nope, having a screensaver running, and having icons on your desktop certainly will not slow down the network. In fact, it wont even slow down your computer (Unless you had like, 500 icons somehow placed on your desktop... then it might be a slight issue)

But, you might want to KEEP in mind, your boss gets to decide how your computer usage is going to go, especially if the computer you are using belongs to the business. Having a screensaver with, say, family pictures, or pictures of could look unprofessional in a work environment, and that could be added reason for your boss giving you a hard time about it.

Thank you. That is what I thought, but I figured I'd ask here just to make sure. And what Aegis wrote, I'd already kinda figured that out, cos our Marketing Managers computer is so slow because of the huge amount of files she has, it can take up to 10 minutes to start up each day, but that never, ever impacted on mine or anyone elses, mine being the newest addition to the network as of October last year. Our marketing manager was quite ENVIOUS of how fast mine is, LOL.
Nah, this boss is our Ops Manager and he's been given grief about how many personal emails he sends each day (he also wastes time playing computer games,) and to cover his a*s he's hammering the staff on what we do . Funny how the owners didn't actually mind my screensaver, it's a series of photographs, mostly nature ones that were taken on tours they do, and then a couple of joke ones. h**l, I even have a George Clooney pic that the male owner joked about, so it's not coming from the owners, just the ops manager. Don't think I'll BOTHER starting up the screensaver again, it's not worth the grief from this particular individual. Thanks to you I have the satisfaction of knowing that he's all BS, LOL. I can live with that.
Thanks again,
Lorri.
I'd bet the marketing manager has every last e-mail ever sent or received, due to the CYA mentality prevalent in so many organizations. Had a manager whose laptop had to be "cleaned out" quarterly by the I/T guys because he'd wait till the whole system bogged down before he'd do anything to archive e-mail. I know I'm not telling you anything you don't live every day. I'm just amazed at how some people run businesses against one another. I know that manager was in trouble if he couldn't produce e-mail to support his positions or decisions.

Solve : Printer Replicates/Duplicates Itself?

Answer» Haven't found any documentation on the net about this problem so I turn to those of you in this forum. I've made a Workgroup of my desktop and laptop. The desktop is the "HOST". An HP Officejet 5500 All-In-One printer is attached directly to the desktop with USB. Initially after networking my 2 computers, I'm able to print a couple of times from either computer then the printer starts making copies of itself! For example, instead of just displaying "HP officejet..." in the Printers and Faxes folder, I end up with "HP office jet... (copy 1)", then copy 2, etc.----then magically the system checks the latest "copy" as the designated printer. The end result is I'm not able to print from either computer. The ports listed for each of the desktop "printers" is USB0001, Virtual..." At the moment the port listed for the printer (and all its copies) on the laptop is "Local". It's a mess. Also the printer keeps reinstalling itself over and over without my direction. Why does the printer have to make copies of itself and act so weird just because it's networked. How do I make the printer stop duplicating and reinstalling itself? Have you run a virus/spyware scan since this started?

Alan <>< Yes, AVG Anti-Spyware is installed on both my laptop and desktop. Every scan always reports "no viruses". I have wondered about that though. I also wonder if the problem could be that I initially checked "SHARE this printer" on the laptop (client). I believe that should only be checked for the printer on the desktop (host). STILL trying to figure it out. Thanks for your response to my question.Software error. Try removing all instances of the printer drivers, using the uninstall feature if there is one. Then reinstall using the latest drivers downloaded from the manufacturer's website.I was asked by a friend who owns a HP Laptop to fix this problem with his HP C4200, The first try was to remove all copies of the printer and RE-INSTALL drivers. It worked for a week, and then the old problem came back. I attached a CANON all-in-one to it and loaded the drivers (4-times - - - I hate VISTA!). The Canon NEVER duplicated itself, even when I deliberately attached it through all the available USB ports.
On Microsoft, this problem is attributed to VISTA by HP, but I believe that HP IS THE PROBLEM, and they won't own up to it...they pass it off as being a OS problem. It appears that ALL users with this problem are exeperiencing it from HP all-in-one printers.

Solve : Access Network Folders?

Answer»

Hi all,
My Dad is being very evil at the moment and won't let me access our network-shared music folder. The folder is stored on a 1TB Network- enabled external drive which can only be accessed via the network. He has locked it with a password and I am unable to guess it (even though I know about 8 of his current ones). I have tried numerous password cracking- uh... I mean 'Guessing' utilities, such as 'dfg NetBrute' which is specifically designed for this task, but does not have the right options (the folder/drive that needs to be cracked must be mapped into My Computer, but to do this a password is needed therefore it won't work). Google brings no help. Here are the specs:

My computer:
-Inspiron 6400
-Windows XP Media Center EDITION 2005 SP3
-1Gb RAM
-120Gb HDD
-Intel Core 2 Duo (1.70Ghz)
-Integrated wireless A/B/G network card
-Integrated LAN adaptor
-USB 2.0 (4 ports)
-Card reader

His computer:
-Asus (Unknown model)
-Windows Vista Ultimate SP1
-2Gb RAM
-250Gb HDD
-Intel Quad-Core (2.8Ghz)
-Integrated wireless A/B/G/N network card
-Integrated LAN adaptor
-USB 2.0 (5 ports)
-Card Reader
-BluetoothSorry. This is out of our bounds, we are not able to legally help you with a topic like this.

Your best option is to ASK your dad, who the drive BELONGS to if you can use it.

So, your dad just up and did this with no reason? I rather think not.

Perhaps the energy you've put into password cracking may be better utilized by determining how you may better get along with your dad. I don't know the situation, and MAYBE it's truly not fair; however, you'll find (with few exceptions) that a lot of life CONSISTS of getting along with PEOPLE who have influence over you.OK. I understand what your saying. I'll talk to him and see if we can come up with an AGREEMENT.

Solve : Can't Connect to IIS from Another Computer?

Answer»

I have IIS (v. 5.1) running on my computer. I can access it fine from my computer or another computer on my network but can't access it from a computer over the internet. I have disabled my firewall on Windows XP and forwarded the port from my router but the connection still TIMES out. Connection TIMEOUT is set to 900 seconds. I made sure not to USE the 192.168.1.xxx IP I get from ipconfig and am using the IP address given by whatismyip.com. I am testing it by using a proxy to attempt to access that IP. I also had a friend use his computer to try to access it and it came up blank. HELP is greatly appreciated.Nevermind. I got it to work. I changed the port to port 82 and added exceptions for port 82 on the firewalls. I don't KNOW why that made a difference, but it did.

Solve : Internet Access but no Network Access?

Answer»

I'm running two machines, one XP Pro machine hardwired to the router, and one XP Home machine connected to the same router wirelessly. Both machines are on the same workgroup in the same subnet and can access the internet. The hardwired box is able to ping itself and the wireless box. The wireless box can ping itself, but not the hardwired box. Both computers have the same file sharing settings. The hardwired box has its Windows Firewall disabled, and the wireless box has the File and Printer Sharing exception enabled in the Windows Firewall settings. Disabling the Windows Firewall on the wireless box has no effect. The wireless box cannot view its own workgroup.

The following message appears when View Workgroup Computers is selected in the Explorer Window, "Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available." I've tried editing the registry entries for NetBT\Parameters\nodetype and \dhcpnodetype, but no settings seem to make any difference.

Now this one is weird: I can get an "ipconfig /all" response on the wireless box, but attempting a "net view" with any options will result in the error code, "System error 6118 has occurred."

If anyone has any idea how to access the network from the wireless machine, please let me know. Below are the results from an "ipconfig /all."

a. Using "Start -> Run":
o Type "\\" without quotes in Open DIALOG box of Start->Run and hit Enter key. For example, "\\Tecumseh". Does window open showing shared resources of the wired computer?
o If no luck, try again with "\\"; e.g. "\\192.168.10.101".

b. Using "ping":
o Ping uses the ICMP protocol for both the request and the response, so either disable the Windows Firewall (both wired and wireless computers) or modify settings to allow access to the request and response. Maybe the ICMP "Settings" BUTTON on Advanced tab of Windows Firewall?
o Ping IP address of wireless computer (yourself); e.g. "ping 192.168.10.102"
o Ping IP address of router IP address; e.g. "ping 192.168.10.1"
o Ping IP address of wired computer;e.g. "ping 192.168.10.101"
o Ping of wired computer; e.g. "ping Tecumseh"

c. Check TCP/IP configuration for wired, wireless, and router machines:
o Using TCP/IP protocol; probably should be TCP/IP over NetBIOS to faciliate computer browsing.
o Must all be on same network; apparently "192.168.10.xxx".
o All using Subnet Mask of "255.255.255.0".
o Wired and wireless using Gateway address "192.168.10.1" which should be the LAN IP address of your router.

So... Can you successfully communicate from the wireless computer to the wired computer?

2. Generally home network users complain about two things:
a. Unable to share files and/or printers.
b. Cannot see all of my workgroup computers.

3. Unable to share files and/or printers. Is your wired Windows XP Pro machine setup for "Simple" or "Advanced" file sharing?

Is the guest account active for network connections?
Quote

In User Accounts (available from Control Panel-User Accounts) the Guest account is off by default. However this setting only applies to the ability to log on the local computer using the Guest account. Simple file sharing relies on guest access to shared folders and printers. To verify that the Guest account is active for network access, do the following:

1. Log on to Windows XP with an administrator account.

2. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.

3. In the Command Prompt window, type net user guest, and then press ENTER.

4. If the account is active, a line appears in the output of the command that states Account active Yes.

5. If the account is not active, type net user guest /active:yes and then press ENTER.

6. Type exit and press ENTER to close the Command Prompt window.

4. Cannot see all of my workgroup computers.
a. All in the same workgroup
b. "File and printer sharing" enabled (otherwise they won't show)
c. Have a common network protocol (e.g. TCP/IP over NetBIOS)
d. At least one (wired) has "Computer Browser" service enabled and started
e. Computer browser needs time to discover and build list of workgroup computers.

5. Reference(s). If you're impatient, it's OK to start with the "Troubleshooting" documents first:

Why Can't I See My Computer on the Network?Sorry about my late REPLY. I've been out-of-town for the past couple of weeks.

I went exploring in my services manager, and I found that the Computer Browser and the Server services were both disabled. I re-enabled them (set to "manual"), and now I can browse the network just as before. I wonder, though, what disabled them...

Anyway, thanks for the help!

Best Regards,

GayanDo you have AD setup on the 2003 server?

How do you share a file / files on the sever? do you just allow anyone to access the files or only authenticated users ?

I think If you didn't install Active Directory, your server is STANDALONE server.so you

Solve : Help I can't view our video?

Answer»

We uploaded a flash video on our website with an embedded player to our server. Have done 9 shows so far and no problems. Now on our 10Th show everyone can see our video but our router is blocking it . It downloads or buffers maybe 20mb of a 100 mb video then stops. We unhooked the router and hooked 1 computer to our cable modem and behold our video will play but when the router is back in place it again gets stopped part way through. We have replaced the router with first a brand new SMC router and again with a D-Link router both did not solve the problem. The video plays fine locally on our network but once it is uploaded we can't view it but we have checked around and others including our ISP and our server people can see it on our website. Is this a coding or port problem coming back at our router or a security issue coming back at our router ? Help please !!! Really embarrassing when clients come to our office and we can't show them our work. The website is www.peopleinconnection.com Check it out. If with the computer directly connected to internet it works fine and with router it does not work, than the problem is on the router (router SETTINGS or router MALFUNCTIONING).
What SMC router?
I'm watching your video now using a very cheap router between my computer and internet network. No problem. Video completely buffered to my computer, the download is finished (I have a pretty good connection to internet), now is playing, reached almost 40% with no glitch.
Now it's at 90%, no problems. Man, I hate that YELLOW banner (Event alerts).Thank you so much for the help but we have solved the problem . Upset because we went through three routers before figuring it out. Turns out that the software we were using to convert and shrink the video [so it was not 5.2 gigs ] was changing the coding SOMEHOW. We COULD view it locally but after it was uploaded and we tried to view it the coding problem was hitting the router. We fixed it by using a different software to shrink and convert the video to around 120 mbs and we have not had any issues so far . Still can't figure out why after doing 9 conversions that the 10th time would do this?
But all is well and we appreciate your help.

Solve : How can I share a drive with one computer on a network??

Answer»

Can anyone TELL me how to set up permissions/ privileges so only one other computer on my network of 20+ computers can see/ access a specific drive, as it used to be a direct network connection but the computers were separated. Both computers are PCs and are running Windows XP (Professional, i believe)
Any ideas?
Thanks

LukeHello!

Right click on the specific drive you WANT to share, choose sharing.
Tick the button "Share this folder". Then set the permissions by clicking "Permissions".

If "Everyone" si selected, delete it and then click "Add".
Type the name of the computer you want to share the drive with and click "Enter".
After you set the permissions for that computer, click "Apply" then "OK".

Good luck and KEEP us posted! In order to see that, you will need to turn off "use simple File sharing" if its not off yet.

You can do that in the explorer -> tools -> folder OPTIONS -> view tap -> it should be in the list probably the complete last.

Solve : My wireless connection constantly disconnects?

Answer»

Hey,

I have a router, but it doesn't work..... so i use a wireless card in the MAIN DESKTOP to route the internet to the others in the house. Up until now this system has worked but recently my wireless connection constantly disconnects and when i try and disable/enable the connection so that it will work again, It SOMETIMES (sometimes is getting more and more common) doesn't let me do this and the only way to get it working again is to restart the computer.

I am wondering what to do to get it working properly again please

Your help and time would be greatly apprecciated.

Regards

NicheReplace the router

Alan <>< Niche, there could be many reasons for wireless disconections; the most vicious is interference. Maybe another wireless router in your area started to work, maybe you are using 802.11 b wireless and the new router around uses 802.11 n protocols.

When you LAST reinstalled windows on that computer?kk thanks, but on the topic of interference. I live on 500 acres of property and the closest person to myself would be 3km away at least.
Windows on the routing computer has never been reinstalled. Just STAYED on there and updated itself frequently.
Regards
NicheIf you can, try again with another router. If it works, than the router is "MAD", that's for sure Maybe he is defective (needs replacement or flash update).Do you have a near wireless telephone? Try to change the channel of transmission of your wireless cardIf he (Niche) will change the channel transmission, he will have to do the same thing to all the wireless equipment in his network.

Niche, interference could appear from many sources, there are many sources of "noise" in that frequency. I thought about another wireless router, but it could be an electric oven or other electrical appliances.

Solve : Remote accessing between MAC and PC...possible??

Answer»

My significant other and I live in different CITIES. He uses a MAC and I have a PC. Is there a way that we can ACCESS the files on each other's computers or even remotely access the desktop of each other's computer?

Thanks!
Yes there is.....but it does cost you few $$$ , you will NEED a software service called "logmein" see URL:
https://secure.logmein.com/products/pro/

Free version of this software does not support MAC file transfer but all other function will be there and if you want to transfer file between the computers then you need the pro version.

Hope this helps.

CheersFor mac: HTTP://www.apple.com/support/downloads/appleremotedesktop21client.html
For pc (windows): http://www.realvnc.com/products/download.html

Port forwarding if necessary - there may be needed a few settings on the mac side so it can be CONTROLLED from the pc.

For file transfer choose another solution (ftp, mail, other).

Solve : To view the status of print job?

Answer»

I am working in company , in which intranet had been used , i want know the status print job given by me .and i also want know the priority given to print job.....and i have another one doubt ,why intranet speed is always 100 mbps .I think we need some more information here. What print job are we talking about?

Have a look HERE

Quote

...and i have another one doubt ,why intranet speed is always 100 mbps .
I'm not exactly sure but this is something to do with your LAN Cable (the cable you use to connect to the internet).
100mbs is the speed your computer is CONNECTED to the router/modem.If you are using a NETWORKED printer on another computer, the print job info is available on that computer. If the printer is a stand alone networked printer, it may have a built in display or a web interface to check. Talk to your system administrator.
As for your network card, 100 mbps is the top speed available to all the relevant devices, not the speed you are actually getting at any given second. It basically only means that you are part of a 10/100 ethernet network. The devices include your router, nic on the computer, and the cat 5 or 6 cable you are using. you could have a gig card in the computer, but if your router, or cable, or some other device on your segment (that your computer communicates with directly, such as a switch or hub) is 10/100, that is your highest speed.
Hope this helped.Quote from: knssaran on JUNE 10, 2008, 11:44:46 PM
I am working in company , in which intranet had been used , i want know the status print job given by me .and i also want know the priority given to print job.....and i have another one doubt ,why intranet speed is always 100 mbps .

Do you mean the status print job is like this?
IF so ,
click start >setting >printer and faxes and then
Right click your printer and click open >
and you will see the status of document in queue.
Print operator GROUP. (I'm not saying more, it won't help in the actual case).

On what computer is that printer? It's a computer in an Active Directory?

Solve : Wireless Choices?

Answer» OK I am in an environment that has wireless 802.11 A,B,G,N that is available. some of my devices that are B,G COMPATIBLE are going to A. Is there a way to set a preferred choice? The only reason i ask for a preferred is because is some places I STILL only have A for wireless until my upgrade is complete.

Is this POSSIBLE in Windows XP?

THANKS,

Solve : BayStack 450-24T Switch Configuartion question.?

Answer»

A few days ago i got an old BayStack Switch.
I REALY don't know how to get the thing working.

Some one told me that I have to ftp on to it, but I dont realy know the IP adress,
is there a possibility to restet it to factory defaults, or locate the ipnumber by using some ip scanner or anything?

It's just for fun purpose to see if it works.24T comes in few flavor......is it a Ethernet Switch on Ethernet ROUTER Switch?

Check the solution provided on this URL:
http://www.intranetjournal.com/ix/msg/55457.html

I have an older Cisco Managed Switch and that's exactly how I got around changing the CONFIGURATION (DB9 to DB9 but instead of Hyper Terminal I used ProComm terminal application)

Hope this helps.

Solve : Two computers?

Answer»

I want to know how to connect two computers to transfer data.Assuming your moving files and data to a new PC: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/getstarted/bott_fstw.mspx

On another NOTE...if the computers are on the same network...just MAKE SURE you share the folders on the computer you're transferring data from and just copy the files you want to the other computer.

It really depends on what you're trying to do...In control panel open network and internet connections and then network connections and the local area connection and the follow the STEPS in wizard. Here's a HANDY guide: http://www.saviourpc.com/setting_up_home_network

Solve : Internet issues, network cable unplugged.?

Answer»

So, my internet was fine until TODAY. I booted up the computer and it told me a network cable was unplugged, and the wi-fi was down. The actual router is downstairs, though my computer is plugged directly into the wall. The downstairs computer is down as well, for now I'm piggybacking the NEIGHBOR's wi-fi but I've checked all the CABLES and nothing is unplugged.

Also odd is the router had a single green light when I went down and checked, and I switched the power on and then off and now there are four lights on that are alternating between red and orange. My INITIAL guess would be that there is a PROBLEM with the router, as its lights don't seem to be quite as active as they customarily are. But then if my guess was entirely valid I wouldn't be here right now.

Thanks in advance. Connect computer straight to the modem, bypassing router.
You may also call ISP, and they can ping your modem, to see, there is no line problem.

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]You have adware/trojans/other garbage on your computer.

Solutions: AVIRA, avast, avg (free antiviruses for home) - for now I could solve with avira what I couldn't solve with avast/avg (EVEN under Linux!)

Spybot search and destroy and Lavasoft Ad-Aware are other applications you should use to disinfect your computer.ok then thanks i will defintally use those and scan to get all the bad stuff outYou could also post your HJT Log Here and some of the people who specialize in cleaning computers of malware could help you.

Solve : has anyone started working with windows server 2008??

Answer»

Has anyone been brave and tried WORKING with windows server 2008 and what are their experiences with it...I don't know if this is still relevant or not but I'll give you my thoughts on it such as they are.

I have used Server 2008 and it is good. There are obviously differences in the set up from 2003 but nothing major from what I can remember. I was using it as a domain controller, DNS, DHCP server, WEB server, VPN server and it was running a mail server. My only complaint about it would be that IIS would suddenly stop working halfway through the day and the only way I could get it running again was to restart the whole thing, this happened every day for about 4 weeks before I went back to 2003. This MAY have been solved by now with updates.
If I remember rightly the only reason I went back to 2003 was because there was not an awful LOT of support for 2008 around on the net and there was STUFF that wouldn't run properly on IIS.

Solve : internal clock not synching with Server 2003 HELP?

Answer»

Hi all: I am a newbie, so sorry if this question has been asked before. I manage a small computer network that has a varied OS's I currently have a Windows 2000 machine that will not let me connect to the server because it says that the internal clock has a different time than the server, contact the system admin? I can't EVEN log on to the computer LOCALLY because i don't know the admin password.....HELP anyone! Thanks BobbiYou'll need to figure out the local password and change the time.Since it's win2k you could try to start in the recovery console. It'll give you a command prompt. There you can use the following command to change the time:

time 10:15Why not just change the time from the BIOS?I ran into this problem one time and turned out the computer was trying to connect to the wrong domain. Switched to the correct one and got right in. You could also try to get in, in safe mode.He has no administrator rights on his machine. He will have to "hack" the administrator account and make the NECESSARY adjustments.or he could ask the computer administrator, who probably already fixed it, as the op hasn't replied since he created the topic a month ago.

Solve : some problem with d-link switch.?

Answer»

Hi all,

I have my own company for computer hardware solution..
but i need some help from ROUTER master..

Problem : I have setup one office with dlink switch.. There are two switches.. One is with 8 SLOT and second is with 16 slots..and have two different connections of internet.. but one of the connection is not working proper.. so pls help how i setup this switches so I can solve this problem..

Any other guidance appreciated.. pls i want to rectify this problem quickly.. so help me SOON..
ummm, need more info. You have 2 separate internet connections, and each switch is a gateway? Is this all on one network, or two networks? What are the ip addresses of the respective switches, are you RUNNING dhcp, and from where? It sounds like you should just bridge the switches together and drop one of the internet connections.

We will need more info on your system to accurately understand whats going on.Quote from: davidtuffel on June 17, 2008, 05:15:02 AM

Solve : Disappearing LAN network??

Answer» TWO weeks ago I had high speed internet installed. It consists of an ANTENNA on our roof that picks up the SIGNAL and a POE adapter pulled into the outlet. Within the first two weeks, the POE adapter has BLOWN out 4 times. The LAN network on my laptop disappeared and can't be reinstalled. I purchased a wireless router and was able to get a connection through that. Now today, POE adapter is not working again and I'm not able to get any power to my wireless router. The internet PROVIDER is claiming that it's not their equipment, but I find it strange that all this has happened since being installed........Any advise?Tell them to come out and fix it or pull it out so you can go with another vendor.

What do you mean by the poe adapter has blown out?
do you have many power surges or brownouts? it's possible the power being supplied to the poe adapter isn't of the best quality. you might want to consider buying a small ups to ensure good power.

Follow the manufacturers instructions to reset the router back to factory defaults.tried it and btw i can get to the page 1s when i unplug the router and plug it back in but if i need to get to it again i need to keep unplugging itso you set up mac address filtering and now you can't access the router.... right? Did you also change the password?
try a hard reset of the router. Check the manual for how to do it. Some ROUTERS employ a combination of holding the reset button down and powering off the device, waiting a couple seconds, powering on the device and then stop holding the reset button. This will erase all previously configured options.
If a hard reset doesn't work, the router may need to be replaced/returned.i changed mac address filtering couldnt get wireless reset router now only see 1/3 of config page ill try too do a hard reset

Solve : Passive and Active Infrastructure?

Answer»

Hello!

I'm doing an assignment for ITE, in which we have to deisgn a smart home. We are asked what passive and active infrastructure is required, however, I have no idea what these are, and our teacher is away, and we have had reliefs who aren't IT teachers.

Does anyone know this, and are they willing to share? Thanks!I'm poking around now, DOUGLAS. I have some ideas, but I don't want to "say" much, yet. I used to work in telecomm, and I never heard those terms. Let me see what I can find...

Here's a start: http://www.tradingmarkets.com/.site/news/Stock%20News/1312297/

From the article:

Quote

So far, Indian telecom companies were permitted to share only passive infrastructure such as towers, repeaters, shelters and generators. Active infrastructure sharing will allow operators to use all key electronic components including ANTENNAS, feeder cables, nodes, radio access network, transmission systems and backhaul, with the exception of spectrum. ET had reported about DoT giving its nod to the active infrastructure sharing policy in its edition date February 21.

"Active infrastructure sharing will be limited to antenna, feeder CABLE, Node B, Radio Access Network (RAN) and transmission system only. Sharing of the allocated spectrum will not be permitted. The licensing conditions will be suitably amended wherever necessary to permit such sharing," the DoT said in a statement.

Put simply, the DoT announcement means that apart from spectrum (radio frequencies), telcos can now share all physical infrastructure.

The policy will give a boost to the new entrants who have bagged licences for telecom operations who can now share both active and passive infrastructure of existing players and launch services within a short SPAN. The quick rollout is likely to trigger off a fresh tariff war which may lead to cuts in call rates.

Now, this is wireless, I know...I'm still looking...

Another article: http://voicendata.ciol.com/content/broadband/108050107.asp

From this article:

Quote
Passive infrastructure sharing refers to sharing of physical sites, buildings, shelters, towers, power supply, and battery backup.

Active infrastructure sharing, in addition, involves access to common antenna, feeder cable, Node B, radio access network (RAN), and transmission system. Sharing of allocated spectrum, however, is not allowed as of now.

From wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecom_infrastructure_sharing

Quote
Passive Infrastructure Sharing Passive Infrastructure sharing is nothing but sharing non-electronic infrastructure at cell site. Passive Infrastructure is becoming popular in telecom industry world wide.

Active Sharing Active sharing is nothing but sharing electronic infrastructure.

Every reference I found was for wireless. I don't know if these concepts apply to other forms of networks, but I suppose they could, just as well.

Solve : I need help to set up a wirless laptop?

Answer»

Here is my problem I have a laptop that is wireless and want to let my buddy use it. He is fighting cancer and is board and sick all the time. I have a wireless router to connect my network and he only lives about a half mile away. Can he hook up to my network using the laptop to browse the INTERNET from his house?......sure could use some help here..............thanks........two-dogs Wait, let me understand the question.
Basically you want to use the wireless network half a mile away?
I don't see how that is possible...there is a way to modify the wireless antennas so they can shoot that far. IIT involves a lot of hardware hacking and adding things to each device. In the long run, it would probably be easier to buy a SYSTEM that can work at that distance already. CHECK out www.trangobroadband.com and www.enterasys.com. These systems work at very long distances (at work, I have two POINTS set up that are 15 miles apart) but are also very expensive. It would be cheaper to pay for his isp. or hook up a really big anntenna wow that things are expensivee

Yeah...i'm not into sites like Myspace or Facebook, ect...

I honestly don't see the point but that's my opinion. Well, the ways these sites are used are a bit silly to me. But I find it handy to be able to KEEP in touch with people from high school without actually having to TALK to them. And because everyone and their grandma has MySpace, it's really easy to find people, even if you haven't spoken to them in years. It's also useful for sending out invitations or for making plans with people. Perhaps I like this because I'm a bit of a night owl, so it allows me to ask someone a question or tell them something at ridiculous hours of the night (like right now) without having to worry about waking them up and without having to worry about me forgetting it. Under all of the glitz, glamour, top friends, and teenie boppers...it actually has its practical uses.Quote

What are you doing up at 4:20AM???

A month ago, I created a Facebook account, went on for about 5 minutes and deactivated it. About a week ago, I reactivated the account by the request of my friend. He made me fill out my personal information and get more friends (I had only two). Now, by mistake, I have 149 friends (quite a few I don't even know).

Haven't been on since.Nice work! CONGRATS!

Thanks for posting it up! Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 11, 2008, 05:23:19 AM

Solve : adsl: can't connect using ethernet cable?

Answer»

I BOUGHT a new wireless router and I must connet to the internet using a ethernet cable to set it up.

I can connect to the internet using wireless card but when I try the ethernet cable, it doesn't work.

The computer detects that I connected the ethernet cable. Everything actually looks like it works, but i can't SEE webpages and the setup said that there is a problem with my CONNECTION.

any advice would be appreciated.what does it say the problem is? when you see the message, CLICK on it for more infothe setup just says that there is a problem, nothing specific.

the wireless (that works) and the ethernet cable used the same internet. weird thing is that ethernet cable method doesn't work.where does it say there's a problem? is there a popup with a button you have to press or is it a little bubble down in the corner of the screen?
Open your Network Connections in CONTROL Panel and double click on the icon that says Local Area Connection (or similar). This will bring up a status window with two tabs, open the second tab and click Details. In the window that appears, do all of the "Properties" have a "Value"?all the properties have value except the last two

DNS server and WINS serverSee on the router options if he received a DNS value (WAN IP settings or something like that).

If the router has no DNS memorized, connect a computer directly to ISP router/modem and see what settings he receives. Note the DNS address (you find it in the output of ipconfig /all command); connect back the wireless router; set up the DNS addresses on each computer with the values you found on the computer connected directly to the ISP equipment. The when i use the old router, I do get a DNS value but not a WINS value
