Solve : extending Wi-Fi range??

Answer»

Greetings,
I am at my fathers house and when ever IM over here i have to connect to the internet via Wi-Fi. The problem is the distance is not really that far but when we SECURE the NETWORK with WEP the Wi-Fi range shortens by a lot. I like the distance of an unsecure network but i like the security of a secure one. So anyone know how i can extend the range a little by tweaking the settings?

Linksys: WAP54G V.2
Lots of things can interfere with wireless COMMS - microwaves, walls, cordless phones... etc.  Try changing the channel your router is using (take it out of "Super G" mode, if necessary).  If it's set to channel 1, change it to 6 or 11, etc.  That's the first thing to try.

Solve : Laptop won't connect to internet?

Answer»

I just got a HP Pavillion dv9000z, but I can't get it to CONNECT to internet through the nvidia nforce wired connection. i keep getting LIMITED or no connectivity WARNING. i have a cable modem that connects to a linksys switch. my main desktop and my laptop connect through the switch, but I can't get my laptop to work. any ideas? thanks.try updating your drivers. check crossover cable connections to make sure they are secure, and check the cable itself for defects.the drivers are updated and all cables are brand new. is there a difference between a regular cable and a crossover? i'm just using cat5e and a linksys switch. thanks.I think fffreak is a bit confused about the term "crossover".  Yes a crossover cab;e is different from a straight through ethernet cable, but no, you don't need one.

You could try manually configuring your laptop's IP settings - do you know how to do that?  You might want to read the NETWORKING FAQ - see my signature.yeah i know how, but i didn't really want to have to do that because my internet connection changes. sometimes i'm at my parents house and other times at my apt. it HAPPENS in both places though and seems to be a problem connecting to dhcp according to ipconfig. At least if you try manual settings, you'll know what's at fault.k, i'll try that then

Solve : Wireless Connection issues?

Answer»

Hey guys im NEW and only 16 so I have only a basic understanding of computer software so sorry if somethings aren't clear.
Theres something wrong with my BT voyeger 2092 or my PC. I was gonna take it to PC world but thats a long, over prices trip for something that could be clearly obvious.
there are two main problems with the wireless connection. The first major ONE is that the majority of the time when i try to go the INTERNET the computer will 'lag' extremely badly. An example of this can be seen on my steam game server where the ping for a server which, when on the rare occasions the internet is running smoothly, would be about 20-30 goes up to 600-1700. Ive tried all different methods from turning off my step brothers PC to turning the wireless connection off over night but to no prevail. there doesn't seem to be any clear reason why the internet would go extremely slow because it seems to do it a differet times as well. One day it will be ok from about 11am-5pm other days it wn't be ok at all. Its making it impossible to do homework for college, game online or email.
The 2nd problem has been present since we got it last year but ive made due with it. It can only be seen really when im PLAYING a game online but when i am running around on Counter strike for example something will happen to my internet connection and my game will stop for about a second and then start back up again. It isn't a graphical problem but a problem with the actual internet. This happens ever 1-3 minutes and becomes extremely frustrating. All i really want to do is occasionally plan a game on the internet when im bored and i can't do this. Thanks for reading this and hopefully you will be able to shed sum light on the problem.

System Stats
Basic windows fire wall
BT voyeger Router (about 4-5 meters away)
Ralink RT2500 Wireless Lan Card
512 ram

I don't know if theres anything else you need to know.
Thanks guys
Jonny Bhun..... about the first problem I would try and uninstall any drivers/ software for your wierless card and re-install I would also see if there are any firware updates for the speed stream. Also yu mentioned the computer is also only 4-5 meters away, as long as it isent throught wals i woul just go out and buy a 20 ft. cat 5 cable it is alwase 100 mbs, it is safer, and more secure. Post back with results/ more problms.hey mate ive already tried uninstalling the drivers for the wireless card. didn't work. wats the firware ? (btw HUN?? *censored*)i know this may sound stupid but what do u mean by firmware and where can i get it You probably don't need a firmware update. Try this.
1. Uninstall the drivers and remove the card from device manager
2. Shut down and physically remove the card
3. Reboot
4. Shut down and reboot again
5. Install the drivers but not the card
6. Shut down and install the card
7. Reboot
Some wireless cards require the drivers be installed before the card is physically installed.

Solve : TCP/IP Problems?

Answer»

I have a fun one ...

I have a Dell Inspiron e1505 running windows xp (sp2).
It has:
Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller
Intel Pro/Wireless 3945 ABG Network card
and a 1345(?) Network integrated controller

Everything was working great on it until Tuesday night ... after a brief cut in service from my isp, the computer will no longer log on to the internet in normal mode. It will, however, work in safe mode + networking (the network integrated controller card does not appear in safemode, so I am not sure of the specs). In normal mode, it will ping itself and loop feedback ping, but it will not ping the dns. The computer actually shows as connected to the internet, but no internet browser will work.

Here's what I have tried so far (with help from it advisor from isp):
* attempted both static ip address and "automatically assigned" ip address
* edited the registry
* flushed the dns
* uninstalled and reinstalled all network cards
* scanned using adaware, spybot, and mcafee virus suite
* three system restores to points when the computer was definitely working
* disabled the wireless card and connected using ethernet
* disabled both the wireless card and the network integrated controller

Incidentally, the home hub seems to be working fine since my wife's mac will access the internet as normal. Also, my dell will access via the safemode method. The same problem with internet access occurs on other networks as well.

One other potentially unrelated problem ... at the same time the "mouse" (synaptics device) quit allowing the normal scrolling mechanism to work. Unsure if this could at all be related.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!!
Try turning off your firewall (software & momentarily) & see if you can connect

Another thing you can try is running MSCONFIG & turning off everything  reboot and see if you connect...again momentarily

Alan <><  I'm confused.  How many different networks cards are we dealing here and of what type?  Can you ping your gateway?  If so, it's a DNS problem.  If not, it's a routing problem.

What's the output from ipconfig /all from a command prompt? In reply to Deo Gratis:

I have tried both of your suggestions ... results, nil.

The firewall did not effect the link and I have now been through all aspects of msconfig ... the only way I can GET the computer to link to any other server/computer/etc. is in safe mode.

In reply to rob pomeroy:

there are three different cards listed in the device manager (the broadcom manages the ethernet connections), the intel is the wireless card, and the other is the 1394 network integrated controller (I checked the numbers for this post).

In regular mode, I cannot ping the gateway or anything other than my computer. In safe mode, I can ping everything.

The ipconfig /all looks normal in both modes (in fact, it looks the same), GIVING the static ip address that has been assigned to the computer and the correct dns and gateway for the network I connect to at the time (either the LIBRARY or home).

Thanks!C'm'on - give us a bit more than that!

i.e. cut and paste it here, please. Here is the ipconfig /all output when using the wireless card (I don't have access to ethernet at the time, but the ip address, gateway, and dns would be the same as the wireless since the it advisor from my isp set these as static on both ethernet and wireless):

You don't want the NIC and wireless card to be set to the same IP address.  What TCP/IP settings are showing on your wife's Mac, out of interest?

I think you may have been led a little astray by your ISP here.  Both of those IP addresses are public, which is wrong.  On your LAN you should be using one of the Class A, B or C networks (see the networking FAQ - link is in my signature).  Those settings may be appropriate on your router but are incorrect on your PC.

I'm not questioning your veracity, but would you mind also posting the safe mode output of ipconfig /all?  I would just like to give it a second scrutiny, if you know what I mean.PS  163.1.121.111 is from Oxford University's public IP pool.  If OU is publically exposing the IP addresses of it' workstations, then the sysadm should be taken out and shot immediately.    But I doubt that's how things are configured.here's the ipconfig /all from safe mode + networking:

I still did not have access to an wired connection ... thus, i only have the wireless ip information. At this point in safe mode, the computer will not connect to the internet at all (i had not tried using wireless in safe mode prior to this attempt). What router do you have?  Can you switch off your wireless and connect with an ethernet cable?i have a bt home hub, and i can connect with an ethernet in safe mode. (at least, i could the last time i tried)Do you know the IP address of the BT Home Hub?According to my wife's macbook, the router's address is 192.168.1.254

her configuration is as follows:
ip address: 192.168.1.65
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
router: 192.168.1.254There you are then; your computer's IP address settings are incorrect.  Configure the address manually (switch off DHCP) with the following settings:

NETWORK CARD

IP address: 192.168.1.66
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.254

WIRELESS CARD

IP address: 192.168.1.67
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.254

Try that and let us know if it works.I'm not at home right now, so I can't (yet) try the ipconfiguration suggested above. However, I am at my office at school and am still having the same troubles. I can connect in safe mode + networking, but not in regular mode. The interesting thing is that the ipconfig /all looks exactly like my first ipconfig posting (with the exception being I am connecting via ethernet wire ... so the ip address is on that device rather than the wireless card) in BOTH safe mode and regular mode. It seems that something is blocking the regular mode system from connecting ... but I can't for the life of me figure out what.

Solve : Wirelessly networking a printer?

Answer»

Well I have 2 computers directly plugged into the router, and 2 running wireless. They all run xp accept the ones plugged into the router are running professional. I was wondering if it is possible to have one of the computers running wireless able to print off the printer. The printer is plugged into my computer via usb, and my computer is plugged into the router it is a Dell Photo Printer 720. Also, I was wondering is it possible to do it the other way around haveing the computer plugged into the router print off a printer running wireless.

Sorry for making this CONFUSING, and awckward to read.Indeed it is possible.  Ensure that all PCs are members of the same workgroup and that file and print sharing is enabled.  Share the printer, then on the other computer(s), add a new network printer. Thanks for the reply, But im not to sure how to make sure they're in the same workgroup i'll do a LITTLE research and tell you how it goes  The procedure varies ACCORDING to your operating system, but you omitted to give us that info.

Oops!

But I'm not quite sure what you mean by that - some are on Home and some on Professional?

Anyway - right click on My Computer; choose properties.  Under the "name" tab you can set the workgroup.Thank you Rob I now have My computers downstairs being able to print upstairs , and can share files which is usefull as well Accept I still have to fool around with it a bit. Anyways thank you for the help  Good job!

And any time you want to expand on "fool around a bit", let us know.  Thank You Rob, IM bored so I might as well explain the problem . All of the computers show up in the Workgroup, but one Cant access the workgroup or see the workgroup. Let me explain, The Computer is a Dell Running Windows XP Home Sp2 With Norton Anti VIRUS (I think this might be the problem dont know), While all the rest run AVG. On every computer but the Dell you can See all the computers in the workgroup including the Dell, So it shows up. But When I try to access the workgroup from the Dell it doesnt work. IT has file and printer shareing enabled, and it has a nice printer I'd like to add to be able to print off any computer. Also Don't know IF this will be any help but There is another Computer Running Wireless a Compaq P4 using Avg and it seemed to work So I dont know.

If Norton Turns out to be the problem is McAfee a good alternative, or just use avg?

Specs of Problem Computer Off of head:
Dell Inspiron _____
Windows Xp Home Edition sp2
Norton Anti Virus
512mb of Ram
Running Connected wirelessly, using a linksys router, and D-Link usb adapter. (Wireless G)

Thats all I can think Of If I missed anything let me know  Also Im reading about workgroups and I never had to enter a user name or password, just what the workgroup was called and I am able to acess files from 3/4 computers. But only the files in the shared folders.

Dont know if its any helpIt's the firewall.  Make sure that TRAFFIC is allowed on ports 137 to 139 and 1512.  These are needed for browsing the LAN.

Solve : Connectivity issues with desktop.?

Answer»

I was talking with a client who wanted to make his desktop wireless.  I set him up with a wireless PCI card adapter for his computer, told him how to install it, I offered to do it, but he said he was ok.  So I get a call from his last night, seems that everything went ok, except this....He has a D-link wireless router, and the PCI card is a Linksys.  Seems that the connection is seen by the computer, but won't allow him to access his network. I told him to turn off the router for 30 seconds and SEE if that helps, it didn't.

Is there something I am missing?  I've heard how Linksys is PICKY, could this been an issue where he needs to stick with D-link?

Thanks for the help.
Does the router have MAC filtering enabled?  (It should do.)  If so, you'll need to add the PCI card's MAC address to the exception able.

Is WEP/WAP encryption in USE?  Have the keys been set up correctly?  Encryption is ESSENTIAL on wireless networks.Encryption is essential.  I believe they told me that they were using a WEP key.  I didn't get a CHANCE to look at it, we were speaking over the phone.  Next time I talk to him I will find out for sure.

Routers don't generally need installation CDs.  To set up a wireless router it is always easiest to connect first USING a cable.  Then you can browse to whatever IP address the manual gives you, and use the web INTERFACE (they all have one).

Still stuck?  Report back. What do you mean by "AOL seeing my router"?  Do you know? That's not the right installation routine.  You are connecting via LAN (your router) not via dial up.  Do you have much in the way of INSTRUCTIONS?  How about AOL's website?yes but the way you are doing it is for DAIL up users and seeing as you have cable youll have to do it a different way.Quite.Exactly.

Solve : private sharing?

yes dl65 .... the router is mine .... and the file sharing is enabled ..... and that's what i want coz i want to share files between the PC and the laptop without them having access to these files ....

hey Rob Pomeroy , what's ur word about that ?mido......  what about the other 2 machines ? ( your neighbours ) are they setup to fileshare and are they setup on the same work group?

I think you should be able to have their machines accessing the net thru the router , but you can file share with your machines only.

dl65  Unless you have a SOPHISTICATED router that can manage VLANs (virtual LANs), the only way of doing this is to rely on filesharing and strong passwords.  Personally I would not do this unless I had supreme trust in my neighbours.  The reason being that if they are connected to the same router as you, it is trivial for them to sniff and crack passwords on your LAN and gain access to your computer/laptop.

Are you SURE you wish to proceed?

COULD a mod move this to networking, perhaps? Quote

Solve : help with ethernet/wireless configuration?

Answer»

I use Compag Presario 7ap170 128 mb memory 4.0gb harddrive, and use windows 98 OPERATING system. I have Cox Digital Broadband for my internet connection, USING a Belkin Wireless router and card. When i initially had my pc set-up for this connection, they configured my computer somehow in the "run" typing in some command to connect the PC through wireless router. The problem is, my wireless connection is very poor. I'm not sure if it is the router or if it is the PC.  I want to try to connect the computer through ethernet connection, to see if the connection is any better; however the computer does not recognize the ethernet connection. I know that there is a way to configure my PC for this, and am hoping that someone in here can help me.
There is ANOTHER issue, not sure if this is the acceptable place to ask. Periodically on BOOTUP I get a blue screen that says "ScanDisk FAILED to initialize" not sure what this is, or what it means. For your networking problem, I recommend reading the networking FAQ (see the link in my signature) to aid you in your understanding.  For your other problem, I suggest posting it again in the Windows forum.

Solve : Updating a file on each member of a network?

Answer»

My business has 3 computers logged onto our network. Here is our issue: we have several documents with customer lists that change very often. These changes MIGHT OCCUR in customer addresses, PHONE #'s, email addresses, customer #'s etc. It becomes very cumbersome to make a change on all 3 computers to KEEP each one in sync with one another. Is it possible to make any one or more changes on one of these computers and have it make the same change(s) on the other two, simultaneously??

Peter  move the file to the shared docs on one computer, and then just create a short cut to it on each computer. ( Ihave assumed you do not have a server SET up with domain capabilities)Thanks!!
That should do it!

PeterIt should, but you need to bear in mind that you may encounter problems if more than one user has the document open simultaneously.  What happens if they both save different copies of the document?

The only satisfactory answer to this is to use a database or a CRM program.

Solve : Losing connection on stand-by?

Answer»

I recently installed NetGear RangeMax. Everything works with only one flaw. ONLY SOMETIME when putting the PC in stand by mode I will lose the Internet CONNECTION when waking it up. The standby can be just a few hours or as long as overnight, and like I said sometimes it loses it and sometimes it does not. I used to restart the PC to reconnect but I learned today that I can get the connection by turning off and on both the modem and router. But why are they losing the IP address when only the PC is shut down? Any suggestions.  [smiley=dankk2.gif]DHCP error, I'll bet.  Try assigning a static IP address, gateway and DNS to your computer. How do I do that? [smiley=embarassed.gif]Click on the "networks" word in his sig...I have FOUND this a problem too. I was ableto figure out that is you reset the router you can reconet without restarting your computer. I keep mine un-incripted but I use the mac address list, because I have found that changing the setting EVEN the name causes problem in certain SITUATIONS. If that all doesn't work change the wierless chanel to either 11; 9; 6Nightmare.  Never use unencrypted wireless communications.  Yes, a MAC filter prevents anyone from connecting to the internet through your router, but it doesn't prevent anyone from listening to your unencrypted network traffic, and pulling out of that whatever you send in PLAIN text.  Very bad idea.  You should either use encrypted wireless or hard cables.

Do not compromise in this area; wireless sniffing is a growth industry and thieves want your unencrypted personal data.

Everyday I use free WIFI  from the company but time to time some pc are connection cut out
and required network address again and again while Some are in good connection the whole day.
I try with ipconfig /all but typing changes is not allowed.
Thanks to you all.I'm going to move this where Rob can find you.  For getting a new WiFi connection, you could try at the command prompt ipconfig/release ( to release the lease to the WiFi adapter and access point or bridge), then enter ipconfig/renew ( grab a new lease from a different DHCP connection with a gateway or same lease as the prior DHCP connection.)

Sometimes I also have to flush my DNS by using ipconfig/flushdns

All commands can be seen at ipconfig/? command

ALSO... If you DISABLE and reenable your WiFi adapter via the switch on your laptop, usually a slide switch if it has one, you can also force a connection release and renew....

You can also go into the wireless preferences CONFIGURATION and specific connection priorities, if you want one connecton to connect first over another of available...

Hope this helps .... Dave Yes I did as you told me before and just now again , but still cannot.

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

and I got this message.

No operation can be performed on Wireless Network connection while its media is DISCONNECTED.

What to do next please?

While others of our SALE pc are working fine. But three of those are disconnected again and again.

Thanks for your reply in waiting.ah yes, you can only run those commands if you have a lease and want to drop the connection and reconnect to another... There is no way to control the wireless from command prompt that I know of when the connection is disabled...

The slide switch for the wireless is set to ON right?? And not disabled in Windows networking?? :-?

Or do you have a PCMCIA WiFi Adapter???

Odd how you have same computers in same location as this one and this is the odd ball in the same wireless environment, a detail I didnt pick up on before... Odd indeed! Sounds like he is intruding on someone elses network and got kicked.Unless there's a particular need, I wouldn't attempt to make such changes through the command prompt.  Is there a reason why you want to do it this way?

Solve : Losing my local area connection?

Answer»

Ok for some reason I am losing my connection to the net.  This started happening shortly after I installed the microshite .net1.1 and service pack (needed for a control console for a battlefield2 server).  Now my computer loses its connection at random times (usually 20-40 mins after I start it) and will not renew the ip address until I restart the computer.  I have tried uninstalling .net 1.1 and bf2  and it seemed to fix this, but I can't say for sure since I was unable to wait very long before I had to use the bf2cc console again.    The next time I tried to install .net 2.0 so that I could use the bf2cc console and it is happening again.  Uninstalling .net 2.0 and reinstalling bf2 hasn't fixed this problem.  Anyone have any ideas for what to do next?

Its on the mobo.
Still need the manufacturer and model please.  Have a look in the software FAQ for one of the system information programs, if you're stuck getting this info.  (See the link in my signature.)its a marvell yukon 88e8053 pci-e gigabit ethernet controller

Under network adapters it also shows a 1394 adapter (made by microsoft/ texas instruments ohci compliant ieee) and a nvidia nforce networking controllerThe 1394 relates to Firewire, not networking so it's a bit of a red herring.

I'm interested by the other two items.  Why do you have a gigabit card?  How many network ports are the on your machine?

The most obvious thing to do first is to obtain the latest drivers for the two network cards.  Have you tried that?PERSONALLY i would spend ten bucks and get a new ethernet card and be done with it.Yeah I tried the driver thing for the Marvell yukon  and the nvidia controller.  But, the prob is still there.

Do you have any clue as to what files/folders/reg changes are made when you install .net?  Even though I have uninstalled .net, I can still use the ingame admin for BF2.  This shouldnt be possible if the .net framework is not on your computer.  Possible conflict with it and something else on this computer?

It has 2 ports.  One is controlled by the marvell yukon and the other is controlled by the nvidia.  I can connect the one controlled by the nvidia and I it says there is a connection, but I cant go online with it.

Not sure why its a gigabit ethernet, its just what came on the mobo.Microsoft software has a habit of not uninstalling completely.  You could see if CCleaner and Eusing Free Registry Cleaner can remove .NET's entrails, but personally I'd be very SURPRISED if it helps.  Worth a shot.

Patio's suggestion is easily the path of least resistance.  Failing that, you may be looking at a complete reinstall.

Do you still have the installation manual/CD?"the problem also is none of us know what pc to check...".

You don't say what kind of DOCUMENTS are SCANNED.

You don't say how many COMPUTERS there are on the network.  Based on that (if there aren't too many), Iask someone what was the last document scanned then do a search on each COMPUTER.  Tedious but might do the trick.

Solve : Wireless internet DSL?

Answer»

Hello, I just recently switched from Cable to DSL, and now, my router is not working.  I am using a Wireless-G Broadband Router from Linksys.  I don't know why it isn't working, but i suspect that it has something to do with switching to DSL because it always worked with the cable modem.  Help would be appreciated, thanks in advance =D.Did you change your Internet Service Provider? Or just the package?I changed ISPs because i came to find out that adelphia sucks lol.oh, and by the way, my computer has no problem connecting to the actual router, just not the internet through it. Also, it connects directly to the modem and can connect to the internet without a problem. Its probably something you have to change in the router settings. Solve : How do I protect my wireless network.?

Answer»

Hey everyone!!!!

I recently (meaning a few months) decided to go with Verizon DSL as an upgrade from dialup.  I have the jest of wireless internet but have some questions about it.  The DSL modem is a Westell VersaLink 327W Model: D90-327W15-06, because it is exclusive to Verizon I was told by Westell to talk to Verizon instead of them.  (Still, it's their product, shouldn't they try to answer my question?)  Anyway, I find trying to get detailed answers from Verizon a bit troublesome.  The firewall is Comodo, a free program that I am using as an alternative to ZoneAlarm, AVG is the anti virus on the pc the router is connected to.

This wireless internet connection does have a WEP key, but the key along with the ESIDD are the default assigned by Westell.  It says on the slip that all ESIDD and WEP keys are unique, but I wanted to know how can I change these keys to ones of my own choosing?  Or at least change the WEP from time to time.

But should their be other methods in securing a wireless network?  Exactly how at risk are wireless networks with "War driving"?  Is it true networks protected with WEP can be -with patience- cracked easily?  Recently, I bought a new computer which I plan on installing a wireless adaptor to pick up the router signal.  Is it POSSIBLE to make the router signal invisible to any other computer EXCEPT for the computers that I want to have access to the router?

Please bear in mind I am still learning about this stuff.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!! Firstly, RTFM.

Secondly, yes, encrypted wireless can be cracked in theory.  WPA is harder to crack than WEP, so is preferable.

Most wireless access points/routers include MAC filtering.  MAC addresses are unique to a PARTICULAR piece of network hardware (e.g. your wireless network cards).  Typically the MAC will be printed somewhere either on the machine or in its handbook.  Add these MAC addresses to the router's list of accepted MACs and block all other MAC addresses.  MAC spoofing is possible, but again it adds another layer of security to your network.

Finally, secure all the PCs on your network; use passwords on all file shares, and switch off the wireless cards when you're not using them.Hi there!  A RTFM to you Rob!!!

I guess you meant switch off the router when not in use?  I don't see what trouble a wireless card adaptor would do when it's on.  For experiment, I used the adaptor to connect to the router using the one installed in the lappy.  All it does is list routers it finds, I'll click on them and ENTER a WEP.  How would a Mac address work?  Their is one listed on the router....

Is it possible to change the SIDD and WEP?  I donno how to do that.  Guess that's all.

Thanks!

Say what is "RTFM"? Quote

I guess you meant switch off the router when not in use?  I don't see what trouble a wireless card adaptor would do when it's on.
Nope; I meant the wireless card.  In fact all wireless equipment is best switched off when not in use, ALTHOUGH this will generally be inconvenient.

WiFi is a broadcast network.  Whilst your wireless equipment is switched on and working, someone with a high gain ANTENNA can (theoretically) sit a mile away from your premises and sniff all the traffic on your network.  Hence the need for more security than you require on a wired network.

Quote
the lappy
Argh.

Quote

Yeah, I think you probably need to RTFM first.  That should help.

Quote
Is it possible to change the SIDD and WEP?
SSID, yes.  And switch off broadcasting the SSID, for a modicum of extra protection once your client machines are all connected.  As for the WEP, this varies between equipment.  Some will generate it for you, others will allow you to enter your own.  YMMV.  (Your mileage may vary.)

Quote
Say what is "RTFM"?
That would be Read The ... er ... Fine Manual.  RTFM.
Depending on the router, there may be two places for entering MAC addresses. On my Linksys, addresses that I want to connect are entered in the MAC address table. MAC address filtering field is for addresses that I want rejected. Another thing you can do is limit the number of IP's that the router will allow. Generally, the number of machines +1 is a good limit. Some routers may not permit this limitation. Turning off SSID broadcast is always a good idea. It prevents the router from broadcasting its presence. If you change the SSID it must be changed in the router and all wireless cards. Make changes one step at a time so that if something goes wrong you can easily undo them.

This USES the Windows LAN messaging service, which isn't great.  If you WANT a really good solution and have the skills to INSTALL it, the best free option is Jabber.  See the SOFTWARE FAQ for more details.

Solve : autoconfig 169.254 on desktop?

Answer»

I have a wired desktop with win2k Pro and a wireless laptop with XP. Netgear wgr614 router. Verizon DSL westell 2200 modem. Modem is in full bridge mode because the westell 2200 is a modem/router . My laptop is set up for wireless and works fine. However, I have no internet connection on my desktop.

Downloaded all the service packs and updates ETC. for windows.

Cables are fine, ports are fine, powered on etc, etc. Uninstalled Zone Alarm on desktop. Tried static IP address. Nothing. When I do ipconfig always COMES up 169.254.x.x or 0.0.0.0. ipconfig /release gives me: All adapters bound to DHCP do not have DHCP addresses. Addresses were auto configured and can't be released.

Device manager shows that NIC (3com etherlink 10/100 PCI TX NIC(3C905B-TX) is fine. Drivers are fine. Everything working properly. I've uninstalled and reinstalled and installed the latest drivers.

Here's what I think is happening. I wiped out the computer and did a clean install of windows 2K Pro. I didn't have the disk so I borrowed one from a friend. The ethernet card on that disk is 3com 3C918 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (3C905B-TX compatible) whereas the actual NIC installed in the computer (as I mentioned above) is 3com Etherlink 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX).

Is this why I get 169.254.x.x? Subnet mask is always 255.255.0.0

Will installing a new NIC solve the problem??

Thanks!

More info. :Prior to setting up router, I could not connect to internet via ethernet cable and westell 2200 modem in regular mode. Only could connect to internet with USB  cable. Again, device manager never shows a probnlem device or yellow exclamation point next to network adapter.installing the right drivers might solve the problem.. did it work before the reformat?

unlovedwarriorHi, thanks for responding. SINCE no one responded previously I never POSTED the solution to my problem. Here it is: What was happening is that I installed the correct drivers but windows wasn't recognizing them for some reason so I removed the NIC and put it into a different slot. This tricked Windows2K into thinking it was brand new hardware. Then I inserted the CD rom with the drivers and voila! Good to go.thanks for sharing the solution for other members to see.Well, I hate when people don't share the solutions to these horrid computer problems! I actually posted the same question on two other forums and got replies so I posted the solution there but not here.oh..

Solve : Wireless security for a newbie.?

Answer»

Hi all, I have just installed an Etec router to my XP Professional desktop and am using a laptop with Windows 2000 professional and wondered what you thought was the easiest/best system to use for security, ie WEP or otherwise, your advice would be appreciated, thanks, Jim.I really need to write a FAQ about this...  WPA provides the most secure NETWORKING but is the trickiest to set up.  WEP is OKAY; WEP2 is better than WEP.  What you'll be ABLE to do depends a lot on the limitations of all your network hardware.

You should lock down your computers with reasonably strong PASSWORDS, particularly if you use file sharing.

Is there any way to change what wireless CONNECTION you are for example I am Wireless network Connection 7. Now being wireless conetion 7 will connections 1,2,3,4,5,6 have priority over me? ALSO their is only 3 computers in the network. I have a Linksys wireless-G ROUTER and am using a Linksys Wireless-G USB adapter; I have the driver installed. Another thing is that my signal strength goes from poor to excellent back and forth repeatedly between a speed of 2 mbps to 11 mbps. So sometimes it goes from blazing fast to a sluggish pace then back again to fast then to slow again  !!!! Any help would be great.I FORGOT to say I have Windos XP SP2 and my computer

CPU- AMD Athlon 64 3800
Mobo- Epox nForce3
Video- Nvida 6800
Ram- 768 MB (PC2700)
You may have a lot of traffic on the default channel. Go to the D-Link site and review the manual for how to change this on the router. Then change your channel on the wireless NICs. Report back if this helps.

Another issue could be distance from the router and what is ohysically between the router and the wireless cards.change to 11 will be better I wonder what the OP means by "Wireless network Connection 7"?  Multiple connections appearing in Network Connections?  Could be a reference to channels, but I wouldn't have thought so...?

computer engineer
Your problem is a windows problem, not a network one. It's about user rights on those computers.
There are 2 kinds of sharing: "simple" and "professional". I will only talk a litle about the "professional" way.
To be able to see the shares from the other computer, you have to go to Control Panel->Administrative Tools. Open Local Security Policy. See User Rights Assignments -> Access this computer from network. Your ACCOUNT has to be there. If it is not, check if the Everyone Group or the Guest account are mentioned. You have to do this on every computer which you wish to visit from another computer, in the same network.
To solve the problem in the most simplistic way, add there the Everyone group (the Everyone group contains the Guest user account).
Then create a share, give to it the corect access rights. You have share rights and local user rights. They COMPLEMENT each other -- it's a whole chapter in a windows book about user rights on FILES and folders... But listen, it's very simple and very intuitive, so don't be scared about it.
Next, be careful to check the settings in firewalls. You may have on-line 2 firewalls: one, that you installed, and Windows firewall. They may work in paralel, so pay attention. Disable one of them (and I sugest to disable Windows Firewall), and on the other make the settings to allow smb BROWSING (or windows sharing, or I don't know what other name for it).
After all of these settings are made, you should have no problem to browse the other computers shares from network. User rights assignments in Local Security Policy and firewall policies have to be set up only once; file and folder user rights and also share rights have to be set up each time you share a new folder or you want to change user rights.

Another easy way to do it: create an account with the same name, same password on each computer in network. Then, as I said before, create a share and give to that user all the rights it needs.

If you can't manage all that "soup", tell us. We will be glad to help you.
You can't map a share if your user hasn't the necessary rights on that share

P.S. To be able to use my advice, you have to disable Simple File Sharing (open a folder, go to Tools -> Folder Options ->View and the last option is Use simple file sharing. Disable it).
If you want to use simple file sharing, though, let it enabled. And search on help how to do it. I wan't stretch my explanation (I could write a book if I will extend my explanations, you know? )
Also, is the partition NTFS type or is FAT type? (right click on partition... And you will find infos there).

Would anyone have an opinion what would be safer, to have a Remote Desktop Port open on the Firewall and Router (with a strong pasword for logging in to the desktop) or the Router SET to accept remote control (with a strong password) with the idea that I would log into the router and enable and DISABLE the router rule ALLOWING for incoming RD port, as required for doing remote desktops. So router blocks RD when I am not using it but the trade off is that my router is always listening. Router is a Netgear.

Open router or open RD?Neither; use VPN, preferably IPSEC.  Does your router have any kind of VPN support?Yes, it is a "Neatgear ProSafe VPN Firewall FVS318v3" Now what? That's good news.  Read the manual about setting up VPN on the router; it will probably also provide instructions on setting up the client machines (the remote computers that "dial in" using VPN).

Every router's setup is slightly different, HENCE why we have to SEND you to the manual first, but let us know if you get stuck.

His Shell is containing his IRCd and WebServer, they are both timeing out when anyone trys to connect.
He can't get access through REMOTE ASSISTANCE or LOGMEIN due to the DDoS.

Is there anyway we can stop this DDoS and help prevent them in the future ?

Solve : Windows XP Load Balancing??

Answer»

Being given a computer with Windows XP proffessional and a few network cards (2, as an example), it is possible to use Load Balancing? I've search the net, I FOUND 2 links with some registry hacks (http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/951/ and http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/WindowsTips/WindowsNT/RegistryTips/Network/Loadbalancemultiplenetworkadaptercards.html) but no explanation. Apart from those 2 sites/links, just mountains of infos for Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Windows 2003 server.
Sooooo... Do you have any idea? A link? What kind of algorithm it's used? Windows XP is able to do load balancing? I suppose it is able to do load balancing, as I found on a microsoft document that XP uses a "new" type of QUEUE, MSMQ 3.0, which offers the possibility of load balancing.
I will search forward, but for now, I'm stuck. And 5 hours of research with no positive response except those 2 sites, no explanations,  it's enough for 1 day... I'm a lousy searcher... What kind of load balancing do you want to do?  Are you running it as a web/game server?  To be honest, load balancing/QoS is best left to a dedicated ROUTER.  You could turn this PC into a router, but if that's really what you want to do with it, I would recommend using one of the router-specialist Linux distributions. It does not matter what type of load balancing... Someone asked me, for he wants to use more connections to network at once. I am not able to respond his question. And I am not able to find the necessary information to respond to his question.
As example, let's say he has 2 connections of 256 kbps and he wants to merge these two bandwitdths. If he connects to 2 web servers, if he downloads from many servers, if he wants to do something else, I don't know, I didn't ask. But, his question (and now also mine): it is possible to do load balancing with Windows XP? I never read (until now) something about Windows XP and Load Balancing, neither affirmative, neither negative. So I don't know where to look any more.
But I'm searching And, I don't know why, I think I will not find the ANSWER from microsoft pages. Maybe from some Linux users... But I doubt that from Microsoft. They have Windows servers to sell Possibly somone somewhere has created an application to do this in Windows XP, but heck - why would they want to?  XP is not a server O/S, not optimised for advanced routing and simply the wrong tool for this job.  Next you'll be asking how to set up XP to run air traffic control.

I haven't found anything suitable, but that's not particularly surprising.

Ok guys, so we got the laptop going. However the new laptop doesnt seem to be on on the right network. Its using the exact same wireless as my laptop, but when using the new laptop and i click on 'Network Places' then 'Workgroup Computers' it seems to be on a network called 'Workgroup', obviously the DEFAULT name. MY laptop is on a network named 'Electratech', so how do i make the new laptop visable on the 'Electratech' network?

Solve : Web sharing/FTP?

Answer»

I have some documents. I want to allow other users to use this document either FTP or HTTP or any other alternative way. Is it possible to share folder from my PC or Server and allow other ppl to use it?
If it is, what are the process of sharing? It will be very helpful for me if anybody provides solution of this problem.. On your network? If you want to share it over the INTERNET then  Why not upload it to a website like http://www.yourfilehost.com?Isn't there any solution in for this problem!!!!!!!! hey experts, come on.....

If not, can anybody provide me information about how make web Server??? plz i need the detail process so that everyone can understand it.Giving you the "detail process" will not necessarily MEAN you can understand it.

By all means, install an FTP server on your PC, but until you TELL us a lot more about your system - your network in particular - it is fairly hard to offer advice.yeah, Here is detail of my PC and network. Solve : ADSL speeds?

Answer»

i am currently on a 512Kb Plan, and my max speed for a download is about 28kb/sec USING a browser, but the old download.com downloader that connected to multible sources i downloaded at about 250kb/sec do these speeds sound about right for ADSL?

Download speeds depend not just on the speed of the connection between you and your ISP, but also on the speed of all the servers/routers INVOLVED in the TRANSACTION.  Some file servers will not give you the file any faster than that, irrespective of how fast your broadband is.

Don't get confused between kbps and kBps.  (Easily done!)  kb = kilobits; kB - kilobytes.  8 bits in a byte, hence 250 kbps = 31.25 kBps.

Use a decent speedtest web page (preferably one provided by your ISP) to FIND your true download speed.  Remember also that speed is dependent on line quality, atmospheric conditions and other factors.

Solve : No internet Connection through wireless router?

Answer»

Hey people im having major problems with my router, the computer im using now is connected into the ADSL modem and is not connected into the wireless router, no problems on this one.

My new computer is currently sitting idle with no internet connection which i run through the wireless router.

This setup has worked before but its suddenly stoped and i dont know why.

I have brought the other computer down stairs and literly put the receiver right next to the router and still nothing.
Then i tryed putting in a network cable from the router to the PC are the internet now works!!!
But thats dosnt help!!! i need it up stairs running through wireless.
This is bizare!!

Then i tryed putting in a network cable from the router to the PC are the internet now works!!!

Reconfigure security, channels and encryption on both the router and WNIC.

Nice drawing by the way.. Very.. Technical..  ty lol, was in a rush. Ill try that nowStart without security and encryption and work your way up from there. Introduce one variable at the time. (I really like saying that, thanks Fed! Or whoever said it first..)did that, now im trying to get into my wireless receiver im trying the defualt ip for it , but connection is refused.Try using DHCP first.

Tell me what steps you've taken so far and what type of driver software you're using.allrighty ive got this far.
But why is it in red?

now i apply it the AP resets then the internet still dosnt work, and ive disabled the WEP on the router, so security shouldnt be a problemAre you using an access point?  :-?  Now you've gone to something beyond my understanding.

Aren't you just connecting to a wireless Router with a wireless NIC?sorry that the part i forgot on my picture!!

Alright, I have no idea how an Access Point works so I can't help you there. I suppose you'd have to tell the Router what and where the Access Point is..I THINK you might need to explain to us the settings available on the AP, and the setting PERTAINING to APs that are available on The WI-FI-Router

How about you post the make and model of the AP and routerWhy are you using a WAP?  Is the wireless router so far away that you need one to pick up a signal?   :-?

Alan <><
Hi to all
dear , first you must sure that there is  awireless connection between pc2 and the router  ....
by using steps below :-
1- use wireless adapter like D-link or so that in pc2 or if it is found reinstall it with its CD
2-at pc2 let ip (TCP/IP) property be at DHCP
3- you have not put MAC at router
4- reset ( push thr back button of th router   then take off the power
5-restart both pc2 and router http://
tell me .......modem ----> router --------> all PCS, wired or wireless

Your drawing does not indicate that, and the access point confuses the issue. Remove it for now until we see if that is even needed. What version of Windows and service pack?

And I introduced the "one variable at a time" RESPONSE. Thanks, Raptor.

Solve : need help picking new wireless router?

Answer»

I just got a laptop with built in WIRELESS and know ABSOLUTELY nothing about it. I managed to figure out that my old wireless router only let me view the internet at 11mbps so I'm going to purchase a new one, It needs to have decent range and also hook up to 4 computers

I have an HP Pavilion dv9035nr media center notebook

its specs concerning internet are:

Modem       56 Kbps*
*Capable of receiving 56 Kbps downloads. However, current regulations limit download speed to 53 Kbps.

Networking       Built-in 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN (RJ-45 connector)

Wireless Networking       Built-in Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network connection (802.11a/b/g)

I wan't a wireless router that will allow it to use its full potential, and I also plan to use it for gaming.
I have DSL internet connection that runs through my cabel also so it can go pretty fast.

thanks.I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless G Broadband router(Click) which was easy to set up and has more options than the average router including some diagnostic tools such as Ping and Traceroute. (Which are completely irrelevant if you ask me, but heck..)

If you want a simple and cheap SOLUTION, I'd recommend a E-tech Wireless 54 Mbps ADSL/Cable router(Click) which is very easy to set up and seems to do a decent job..

I would recommend against using an Asus router, those have way too many options and it is very easy to get confused if you're not experienced with WLANs.i have the same router as u raptorthanks, thats the one I was considering. But is that all the faster my laptop can go? and what does the "Built-in 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN (RJ-45 connector)" mean?its onboard (on the mobo) that way you can connect to the net through cat5 cableThe built in Ethernet is a network port, somewhere you can connect a network cable to so you can connect to a wired network
As for the speed, your internet is almost certainly slower than 54mbps, and your laptop's wireless will have a max sped of 54mbps
The fastest devices available offer up to 125mbps but internet connections don't go that fast yetoh, thanks. also, do you know anything about an express card/54 pc card slot?  is it just new? because I can't find anything that will fit in it besides my tv tuneri think its just for that but im not suremy internet on all my desktops goes 100MBPS so I guess my internet connection is close to 125mbps.

I hope my laptop is just really new, I couldn't even find information about the processor or a review of the laptop lol Quote

Your Internet connection is no where near 125MBps. Your LAN could be, but this is highly doubtful as they are theoretical speeds and never apply for Wireless. Wireless can go up to 56MBps, however, due to interference it is much lower than that.

Your Internet (WAN, not LAN) connection may have a download speed of up to 20MBps, depending heavily on what ISP and packet you have chosen. In case you ask; it is not possible to fully utilitize all of the speed promised by your ISP .... If you want to learn more, go to How stuff works (Click) Quote
oh, thanks. also, do you know anything about an express card/54 pc card slot?  is it just new? because I can't find anything that will fit in it besides my tv tuner

Express card is a replacement for PCMCIA, built on the PCI-Express bus
It theoretically supports much faster speeds and is pretty new
However, not many devices support it yet (your tv tuner is obviously one of the few)

Solve : Do I need a wireless card for desktop??

Answer»

I asked my LAN/ISP/CABLE provider about connecting a second desktop computer to my existing cable. I was TOLD I would need a router, which they would gladly supply for $85.00. Ok. Now they tell me I will also need a wireless card, which again, they will gladly supply for $125.00.

My tech knowledge is very limited, but when I think of needing a "WIRELESS" card to connect a cable WIRE to my computer, I get an "ERROR" popup in my brain!

On top of all that, I don't even KNOW how to find out if my new computer already has a wireless card. I am posting info from *EVEREST program in hopes someone can look at it and tell if I do or don't have a wireless card.

* A much appreciated gift from "FED" in the "Drivers" forum.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Solve : Wireless internet connection trouble?

Answer»

Feel like such a ditz, sorry!  I just got my daughter a new computer with Windows XP and a wireless card installed, and I already have one wirelessly connected to my computer (which techs CONFIGURED at the shop, after I brought my SMC router in to them) so I thought I could go on Microsoft, DOWNLOAD the instructions and do this one myself, NOT!  I followed the instructions with the Connection Wizard step by step, to no avail.  Is there a site you recommend I USE that has instructions? I use Rogers Hi-Speed internet.
Thanks SO MUCH!What exactly are you trying to achieve here?
Are you trying to connect the new computer to the wireless router, or to the other computer, or what? They didn't set it up, they only installed the drivers for you. Setting up a wireless network needs to be done at home due to security and channel settings.I'm trying to connect to MY computer's router, my daughter's computer that has the wireless card.  My other basement computer works wirelessly so I have no idea why I don't know what I'm doing!
Laptop or desktop? I don't why it makes a difference, but it often does. If its a laptop, enter the machines MAC address in the routers MAC address table. Not to be confused with MAC address filtering, which denies access. Incidentally, an XP machine always tries to rule the roost in a mixed OS network. You might have to make changes to the cards properties. Go to start/run/command and run ipconfig. If the IP address is 169.x.x.x You will have to make some changes. Some details about the equipment, operating SYSTEM, and exactly what you tried can be important.

Solve : Home network problems?

Answer»

I have 2 PCs connected to a DSL wireless router, one hard wired to the router and the other (laptop) via a wireless adapter. Both machines running XP SP2.

I'm having no PROBLEMS accessing the internet, POP3 and web, from either machine, however I cannot share files or the printer.

A few months ago I had everything running just fine until I loaded Windows Live OneCare. After a while I got the settings set properly and and was good to go.

I recently RAN Windows update (coincidence?) on the laptop (other WORKSTATION was regularly updating) and now can't access either workstation files from the other, or the shared printer from the laptop. Message I get is: "Warning .... is not accessible. You might not have permission...... The network path was not found". I still have full internet access from both machines.

One thing I have noticed is that from each machine I can ping the gateway but not itself or the other.

Suggestions?

ChrisI had the same problem (kind of - it never worked, and was caused by Zonealarm)
I can now ping each computer from the other (but not share files or printers) - the solution was to add the other machine's IP address to the trusted zone in Zonealarm and set the firewall to medium
Perhaps there is a similar kind of option in Windows Live Onecare? (if it's what I think it is, like a security package, I thought it included a firewall but I may be wrong)
Worth a tryIs LiveCare a firewall?Yes, OneCare has a firewall component, but I have verified it is allowing file and printer sharing as well as MS Windows networking. Also, why can't I ping the NIC from both work stations?Did you perhaps isolate the wireless connections on your network? Some routers can do that, like my Linksys.Doup!!!

Turns out all machines involved needed REBOOTING. I got so used to being prompted for the reboot it didn't dawn on me.

Still can't ping my own machine or the other one also running the OneCare firewall. Have verified by turning off the firewall it is a OneCare setting somewhere. Otherwise all is well.
ThanksAh, come back anytime. Many firewalls block ICMP packets (ping) by default.  You won't get a response from pinging, unless you override that setting.

Edit: I'd put 'ICPM'.  Argh.  Do I go in the sin bin?Bingo!!

ICMP V4&V6 inbound were being blocked. Thanks

Solve : difference between domain user?

Answer» HAI,

I am new to domain connectivity,  if the system connected to domain,

What is difference makes when we login the system as winxp user or with domain user?

If you're logging into a domain as a domain user, you'll have access to shared files/folders/printers.

If you logon locally, then you forfeit all those resources and only have access to things connected directly to your computer.

Alan <><  That's not quite my understanding, but possibly Alan is simplifying here to make the concepts easier to grasp.

The essential difference is that domain controllers typically have the right to assign permissions for all resources WITHIN the domain, whereas local XP MACHINES only have rights to assign resources that are within their immediate control (e.g. hard drive and ATTACHED printers).  So it follows that a domain user has whatever rights the domain controller has assigned, and a local user has whatever rights the XP machine has assigned.

You may need a domain account to access certain domain resources unless the DC has provided guest/anonymous access to those resources.

Does that help?

Although my explanation is also a little SIMPLIFIED, I think Alan's explanation was clearer.  No compredez.   :-?

Solve : Making wireless available with static IP addresses?

Answer»

Hi

I have a network at work which CONSISTS of 3 windows TOUCH screen tills in one workgroup,  2 computers on a SECOND workgroup, a broadband modem, a wireless router and a wireless access point. All these components are conected together through a 16 PORT switch.

The tills need to be able to comunicate with one of the 2 computers and so, as I understand it all tills and computers have been given STATIC IP addresses and  a default gateway with a prefered DNS server. The problem now is that although our computers are able to conect to the internet, when guests come to the hotel, although they can connect to either the access point or the wireless router they can not then connect to the internet.

Is it possible to configure the linksys wireless equipment to allow wirless access. At the moment there is no encyption although I will add this later

many thanks in advance of any help you may be able to give

JamesWhy can they not connect to the Internet? Can you PING an IP ADRESS?

A prefered DNS server should be the router's IP.

I have 2 computers linked together in a LAN (I think it's CALLED a peer-to-peer network). One of the computers runs WIN98SE, the other WIN2000. Until recently I had no problem with moving files between the 2, etc. The computer running WIN2000 had a disastrous crash; I had to re-install Windows on it.

Now, the computers each recognize the existence of the other in Neytwork Neighborhood, but no longer communicate. When I try to access the WIN988 computer from the WIN2000 computer, the PROGRAM locks up. The WIN98 computer reports: "Distributed COM Services was blocked from accepting a connection", and provides the IP of the WIN2000 computer.

When I try to access the WIN2000 computer from the WIN98 computer, I am told that I need a password to do this. I never put a password in, and never required one before.

I thought the problem might be with the firewall (ZoneAlarm(, but it isn't. Turning off Zone Alarm on both computers makes no change.

What is happening, and how can I fix it?
TomAre they still in the same workgroup?

How are they connected? Through a Router or by Crossover cable?HI

on the windows 98 computer create a user name and password the same as that on the windows 2000 computer and log on, on the win 98 computer with that and then try and access the windows 2000 shares. see if that works ....

Let me know ...

:-)

PhilThanks, Phil and Raptor. I've made some progress since I posed the problem.
The WIN2000 computer was having a CONFLICT, trying to identify the other computer under 2 names. When I cleared that up, I was able to communicate easily with the WIN98 computer.
I'm still having the problem with the WIN98 computer, but I'll try your suggestion, Phil, tomorrow, and let you know what happens.
TomI finally had time to try Peter's suggestion. It worked!!
Thanks, Peter. I never would have thought to try that.

I recently PULLED out my HARD DRIVE from my laptop which broke.
I PUT the laptop in an enclosure and hooked it up to my desktop.

However, my notebook hard drive had windows password when booting up.

Is there any way to disable the password so I can GET to my files on the hard drive?
