Solve : Port forwarding through second (bridged) router?

Answer»

Sorry, in the first two cases the Airstation was still bridged, the third example was as a ROUTER.

No connection further than the Airstation:
Live (.1.1) - Airs WAN (.1.1 )-Airs LAN (.11.1) - PC (11.2)

Here you have a mistake. The IP for Live and Airs wan port HAVE to be different.

Indeed, just a stupid mistake. It was kinda late when i tried (just before the post)
I'll TRY again with .2 for the Airstation. Further than that though there are no mistakes: I double checked and those first two situations from my last post are correctly described. (In bridged mode, that is.)

(edit)
Just tried again, the mistake was just in my writing. The Airstation WAN wás in fact set to .1.2 and didn't work as described. If you set up both devices as routers, can you ping the Livebox? What is the output? (TTL, I'm interested in TTL value mostly).
If Airstation is set in bridge mode, what is the response of the Livebox to ping? Both in router mode gives the following PING results:
Livebox: 1ms, TTL=253
Airstation: >1ms, TTL=64

Results are exactly the same on every try.

What bothers me is that when I tried Google, the TTL is lower than that of the livebox: 243 The TTL becomes smaller with every hop (router/gateway) the icmp signal passes.

I don't understand why Livebox replies with TTL 253 (it should be 254) and Airstation with 64 (it should be 255)...
If you connect a computer directly to Livebox, what TTL do you obtain from ping to Livebox?I was just reading a bit about TTL ( didn't know what it was at first) on Wikipedia but.. As I understand it should start out as 255 (at the PC or at the first hop?) and become one less with each hop as you say. What I do not understand is that it decreases all the WAY to 64 just to the Livebox, I would expect 253 (or 254?) according to what little I just read. You state it should be 255 at the Livebox which I also don't get :S
Sorry, this is sorta off-topic but I'm just eager to learn I have to read about TTL, I don't know how to advice you in this moment.

I understand now the 64 value: it is the DEFAULT value your Airstation router will respond.
I don't think that the TTL [LE] is the problem [/LE] in your situation (I don't think the TTL is the problem for your case). I don't understand though that 253, it should be 254.The 253 might be because the Airstation is so sophisticated it appears like two hops to the package..
Just thinking loud though.
Weird thing, that TTL. Wikipedia said it was measured in seconds, stored in hex and displayed in decimal... or something like that. Really weird thing to me but never mind.

Solve : Windows 2000 D-Link Connection Drops After 30 minutes?

Answer»

Our home D-Link wireless adapter connection to Linksys router keeps dropping internet connections.
Scenario:
1. Reboot computer - (Windows 2000)
2. D-link WDA-2320 icon (in systray turns green. SID has a blue halo signifying connectivity. )
3. Connect using IE, AOL, or Firefox. Connection last about 30 minutes. Browser stops working. D-Link icon continues to show green but the blue halo turns on and off. Browser never ABLE to connect to the router when the blue halo turns off. The DHCP address is missing in ipconfig /all.

Need to reboot to get another 15-30 minutes of wireless connectivity.
When ipconfig /all is run after reboot, there is a valid address in the fields, 'Connection--specific DNS suffix' and 'DNS suffix search list.' After 15 minutes, these fields are empty.

These problems SEEMED to happen the end of May Windows security silent update push. There are 2 other computers connected similarly to the router connected to cable modem with no problem. One PC has D-Link, the other with Dell wireless driver. Both are XP, one may have had an update, one did not. None have the same Windows 2000 problem.

D-link WDA-2320 was updated with the latest driver - problem still exists. Tried to connect in SAFE MODE w/ Network: Could not find the driver.

Latest symptom after trying safe mode: There are 2 connection profiles in D-LINK. One I defined, the other is unknown. With the 2 profile, the blue halo switches back and forth.

Would appreciate some help - would prefer staying with Windows 2000 since this desktop with DLINK PCI card is not resource rich.you may not believe it...but it could the wireless card driver's problem (you will never get the NIC manufacturing to admit to that)...I have a similar problem at work.

My boss has a 2 years old IBM laptop....for a year and half no issue what so ever, all of a sudden, his network connection would be dropped after five minutes......no matter what, I could not fix it.....I even reformatted his drive and installed the latest drivers (clean system with the same issue).....I guess I should have tried a different NIC before reformatting !! so finally I put a Motorola Wireless PCMCIA card in his laptop with Motorola driver and everything started to work......So NIC drivers are big part of the problem even though they may be the latest version.

CheersAppreciate the tips. Purchased a new Nic and XP upgrade, but then found an Ethernet cable to connect the computer directly to the router. Testing whether the problem still exists with a wired connection. Regardless, thanks again.

Solve : Failed connections.?

Answer»

Recently I've been encountering "interuppted connections" in Firefox 2 and also Firefox 3 and IE.

I am able to tracert and ping SITES like google.com and yahoo.com

However, opera.com and MANY other sites are failing to be found even when they are viewable on another computer within our LAN. This means that my computer is having network issues, and has nothing to do with our ISP or router. I've flushed my DNS and Winsock and scanned with 7 DIFFERENT anti-malware, anti-spyware and anything with an anti prefix just about. Driving me insane, anyone know what seems to be the problem? Also, HijackThis logs seem to be perfectly fine.

My Netgear router has also shown signs of a DOS attack, but I don't think that is affecting anything because, as I said earlier, other computers in the network are able to view all the sites that my computer is having TROUBLE with.

Solve : Printer Sharing between XP and Vista?

Answer»

Hello,
I am having a very difficult time sharing my PRINTER (HP PSC 1610 ALL-in-one) that is connected to my desktop (XP). I would LIKE to print from my laptop (Vista) wirelessly. I am connected to the internet via a TRENDnet (TEW-631BRP) router that is connected to my desktop. I have installed the newest printer driver software on both my laptop and desktop. I used control panel/printers and faxes/HP PSC 1610 right clicked on my printer and selected "sharing...). I shared the printer and gave it a name. THen, I went to my laptop to try to "add a Printer"/ Add a network, wireless, or bluetooth printer. My laptop cannot find the printer. I tried to find it by browsing and then by \\computername\printer name....NOTHING. I am stuck now and dont know what do to. I have heard people talk about checking to make sure both computers are on the same "workgroup". I checked that and they are both on the same. Is there anything I am missing?
Thank you!!!

Desktop - Sony Vio VGC-RB30
Pentium 4 3Ghtz
1G Ram
XP home edition

Printer HP PSC 1610 All-in-one

Laptop-
HP Pavilion dv6700 Notebook
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU 1.67 GHz
3gm Ram
I wanted to add a few things that I have also noticed.

I cannot see my desktop in the network from my laptop computer and I cannot see my laptop from my desktop. They both have functioning internet connection (Desktop is wired to my highspeed modem by usb which is, in turn, connected to my wireless router. The laptop is connected wirelessly through the wireless router) I would think that because both of the computers are connected to the internet through the same network, that they would show up on each respective computer...but they do not.

The printer sharing and file sharing funtion worked for a few weeks, but then all the sudden stopped. I used to be able to see both computers in the network too. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!I think your different OS is problem to share the printer .If you use network printer both computers OS must be same.

I think your different OS is problem to share the printer .If you use network printer both computers OS must be same.
but there are many smart man i hope they would help for your problem

1. Windows XP Printer. Normally when you define a local printer on Windows XP, you would specify all operating systems you want it to support. Not sure how you do this for Vista unless there's some kind of "other" selection. You should also be able to modify the printer specification later to specify support for additional operating systems. (Look for this capability, it's hidden there somewhere.) Obviously, you'll need access to printer drivers for all of the operating systems you want the Windows XP printer to support. If you do this correctly, the first time another machine connects to use the printer, the appropriate driver will download to it (from the Windows XP host machine).

The other option is to download and install the Vista printer driver for the device directly on the Windows Vista machine. Then use that driver when you add a "network" printer (logically define) to the Vista machine.

You need to know I have almost no Vista experience and have never "added" a printer to a Vista machine.

2. Computer Browser Service. On Windows XP, people frequently complain about not seeing the "other" computers and their resources. This has to do with the "Computer Browser" service. At least one of the computers on the LAN (the one that's powered "on" most of the time), should have the "Computer Browser" service running. It will build and maintain a "master" list of the other computers in your workgroup, so when they go to look at "My Network Places" this list can be sent to them without having to build one from scratch for each request. Not positive, but I believe it will only show computers that have the service for "file and printer sharing" installed and enabled.

3. Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol. I'm not familiar with this protocol, but have to wonder whether it has replaced the "Computer Browser" as the preferred method for network discovery on Windows XP and Vista. From the "Microsoft Vista Home Networking Setup and Options" link given later:
Quote
Computers running Windows XP that cannot be detected probably do not have the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol installed on the machine. You can download the Link Layer Topology Discovery Responder from the Microsoft website here to install on Windows XP PCs.

4. Reference(s). Look at the following links:
Why Can't I See My Computer on the Network?
Microsoft Vista Home Networking Setup and Options
Windows Vista Password Protected File Sharing

Vista - Troubleshoot file and printer sharing
Vista - Troubleshoot problems with computers not appearing on the network map

Look at the following downloadable Microsoft DOCUMENTS (primarily for Windows XP):
Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP

5. Firewalls. You may have to modify your firewall configuration(s).

I'm really confused as to what your network configuration is. Normally I would expect it to be:

Cable/DSL Modem
|
| <-- ethernet cable
WAN port--> |
Wireless Router ~~ LAN wireless link ~~ Laptop (Vista)
LAN port (wired)--> |
| <-- ethernet cable
|
Desktop Computer (Windows XP Home)

In the above configuration, all of the LAN computers would have "private" IP addresses (which should have the same network ID and subnet mask, but different host IDs). Your public internet address would be assigned by the ISP to the WAN port of the wireless router.

If your desktop computer is truly connected by USB to your high speed modem, then I would expect it to have the ISP assigned public IP address (which would be incompatible with any LAN computers with private IP addresses). You didn't say what the make and model number of your high speed modem is.

I'm confused. How about you?I was also wondering about your network setup. Why is your desktop computer connected directly to the modem rather than to the router? As dahlarbear attempted to diagram, the router would normally be connected to the modem via ethernet cable and then all computers would connect, either wired or wireless, to the router.Quote from: dahlarbear on June 23, 2008, 04:07:55 AM

"Normally when you define a local printer on Windows XP". I believe this means open Control Panel in your Windows XP system, select Printers and Faxes, right click on the printer and select Properties, select the Sharing tab, click on Additional Drivers button, and then select one or more of the options there regarding OS for which you want to install drivers. I have three printers set up in my Windows XP desktop computer and, if I go through this procedure for each of them, none of them show Windows Vista as a choice. Nevertheless, I successfully added two of these printers to the Printers on my Compaq Notebook computer and can print from them via wireless connection. As I recall, for the older printer, a Canon BJC-2000, Windows Vista seemed to have drivers; I did not need to install drivers for it. With the other printer, a Canon BJC-3000, I did directly install drivers on the Vista computer. Thank you EVERYONE for your responses. I am new at this, so it may take me a couple days to get through all of the details. Here is my set-up the best I can describe. The reason I have my desktop computer connected to my SpeedStream high speed modem through a USB is because I could not get the ethernet router in my desktop to work. It just wont connect. One would think that the problem might be the ethernet port on the high speed modem or maybe even my ethernet cord, but I tested them on the ethernet port on my laptop and it worked fine.
Here is the set up:

Desktop computer------(USB cord)-------SpeedStream Modem
(Ethernet port)
!
!
(ethernet cord)
!
!
(WAN Port)
Trendnet wireless router
\
\
Laptop connected through wireless connection to Router

Additional Details: I can ping my Desktop through my laptop, but I cannot Ping my Laptop from my Desktop

It worked at one point in time, which is what is confusing me. I appreciate any feedback!

Try to add a printer on the Vista laptop using the IP address of the computer sharing the printer (instead of the computer name). For example, "\\77.10.30.21\SharedPrinterName".

3. Network Configuration. Thank you for diagramming your network configuration. I don't like the configuration I see, but thank you. Unless your router is in "Bridge" mode (and it shouldn't be), I believe your laptop and desktop are on separate networks. The desktop probably has a public IP address (issued by the ISP), the WAN side of your router probably has a public IP address (issued by the ISP), and the laptop probably has a private IP address (issued by DHCP capability of your router or manually set by you).

4. File and printer sharing aside, my goal would be to reconfigure the network to a standard configuration, i.e. all computers on the LAN side of the router via ethernet cables or wireless connection. This places all of your computers on a private network behind the firewall of your router and promotes safer computing. Some ISPs register the MAC address of the first computer used on the account and will not connect to any other MAC. Don't know if that applies here because you seem to be able to access internet from both the desktop and the router. When you first established your service with this ISP, were you using just the desktop directly connected to the modem (USB or ethernet port)? Is your ISP service "cable" or "DSL"? If DSL, do you know if it uses a PPPoE connection?
Thank you again for your responses. I really appreciate the help.

I tired to add the printer on the vista laptop with "\\IP address\sharedprintername" and got nothing again. Darn!

My router isnt in "bridge mode" ...i dont think. I do have the same public IP address though (between my desktop and laptop).

---------I wish i could set them both up up on the lan side of the router, but because my ethernet card in my computer doesnt seem to be working, I cant. Maybe that is what I should be trying to fix. It hasnt been working since i bought my computer. It just says "limited or no connectivity" WHENEVER I try to connect through it. I tried to bring it back to best buy, but they said they tested it and it works fine. What could I be doing wrong? I tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers for it, but that didnt help. Should I try to restore my computer back to factory settings and just start over?

Solve : laptop sees router but won't load websites?

Answer»

Hi,
I am having trouble connecting to a particular wireless network with my pc laptop. I can see the router and have very good signal strength, and while the laptop says it is connected, when I try to load any webpages I GET a time out error that says the website cannot be found. I followed some instructions I found for using the terminal prompt to get a new IP address, but that didn't help (assuming I did it right.) With the terminal prompt, I was able to ping google.com and had a response right back.

I am able to use this laptop elsewhere to connect to wireless networks all the time--this is the first trouble I've had. And other people can connect to this network that I am having trouble with. Could this be a firewall problem? What specifically should I check on my firewall (MacAffee)?

I am using a Dell 5150 laptop with XP SP2, and have tried IE 6 and Firefox. It is a Linksys router. (sudden thought: I connect at home to another router named "linksys"...could this be the problem?) I brought my mac laptop (OSX 10.4) in to see if it could connect to the problem network, but got the same thing: strong signal, immediate connection, good ping, but no WEBSITES.

Any ideas? Is this a public router? I have seen similar ISSUES when mac filtering is enabled, allowing a connection, but not doing anything with it. This may be as simple as verifying permission with the owner of the router.I tried the following TCP/IP repair commands, but still no websites loading. Ipconfig/all output follows.

Steps tried:
1. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: *netsh winsock reset catalog*

2. Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. *netsh int ip reset reset.log*

3. Reboot the machine.

Solve : consistent internet disconnects?

Answer»

First, I'm TECHNICALLY challenged so whoever answers this, please speak in terms I can understand.

I have a wireless DSL setup in my home. My computer has recently begun disconnecting consistently in the middle of online work. I have CONTACTED ATT&T and have been informed the problem is in my computer not the DSL modem or connection. When I put the mouse over the computer icon it says connected, excellent strength but then a box appears asking if I want to "dial-up" a connection or "view offline?" I usually, right-click and repair. After that is completed a box appears that asks if I want to connect to the internet. I click connect and we are online again for a few minutes, then the cycle repeats. It appears to happen more and more FREQUENTLY. Can someone give me a hint of something that could be wrong? Do I NEED to take my computer in for repair?

Thanks! You have the DSL modem. Is wireless coming directly off the modem, or do you have, in addition, a wireless router?

Has AT&T had you reboot the modem/router?

There are two methods to rebooting. Neither are difficult. Unplug the modem, count to ten, and plug it in again. Do the same with the router if you have a router.

See if this helps.

Don't let AT&T push you around, and please keep us informed. Thanks for the reply. I am wireless directly off the modem. I have rebooted the moden several times. When I call them we go through the same procedure every time and it never WORKS. They say it is something in my computer. We have another computer in the house that is wireless and it never gets disconnected. So could it be something in my computer?

Thanks again!Try plugging the computer directly into the modem. Does it stay connected now?

Alan <>< If it stays connected when plugged directly into the modem what does it mean the problem is?

Thanks! It means that most likely the router is the problem.

Alan <>< routers do go bad, i worked support for an ISP for a short time and that was a common problem.
what kind do you have? how old is it?

Solve : Problem with LAN...?

Answer»

Hi!

Some weeks ago a company was providing my family and I internet connection, our TV channels etc. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiscali_TV )
It was DSL, broadband connection.
Now we are not paying for it since May, and I have a LAN connection which a whole buiding is using. I still have the same antivirus, and kept the same settings in windows, but there are some problems now:
- I can't reset my IP
- Downloading softwares, P2P softwares (like Limewire) are downloading with 0 kb/s
- Online games like Counter Strike or S.W.I.N.E are not working either. (Ex; for CS I get "Could not connect master game server to retrieve sever list" error message)

What should I do?

Thanks for any help or advice !

P.S.: When our company had "technical difficulties" and TV-internet was not working we used the LAN connection (we always had it) and the problems were the same.Quote

That is the whole sentence. I don't know if you misunderstood my post, or just joking but I did point out that I still have an internet connection(which I'm using right now), it's only a different network, and since this change some elements are not working properly. The other users in building have access to these services?
You may be blocked by firewall (installed on another equipment, not on your computer). If there is a network administrator (for the whole building), please contact him and ask details.I got a reply from an another forum, that the network has only port 80 open, which only works for web pages. That SEEMS to the problem. I must speak with the administrator, to open different ports. (Which will unfortunately not happen because that building is the embassy where my father is working, and he can't ask to do such things obviously)

Anyways, thanks for replying.Quote from: yoyo876 on June 16, 2008, 11:11:42 AM

Most certainly he won't The administrator has to respect some protocols regarding communications and data safety, if he is not instructed by his superiors to open access to some ports, he won't make those modification from his own initiative or other persons with no responsibilities in data security/communications security (or whatever the name of the department). Unless he wants to answer to some difficult questions regarding his duties (and more than that).
You made me curious. The network administrator will give you a politically correct response. Just TELL me please what is his answer, it is something that I wish to HEAR (for satisfying my personal curiosities, how would answer an official to such a demand).Quote from: yoyo876 on June 16, 2008, 11:11:42 AM

I won't ask it, because we do not have the right to do it, for the REASON said above. I myself is curious too, what could he reply to such a request (but I don;t think he would be happy), but we're soon moving, so it would be unecessary to make a risk of asking such a question now.
I was thinking that the problem lies in my internet settings, and that I could REPAIR it quckly, and use a (what is for me) a proper internet for my last two weeks here. But everything is more complicated than I thought...

Hi, i CURRENTLY have AOL broadband connected to my desktop, it GOES Phone socket---------voyager 105adsl modem--------------desktop PC. HOWEVER i have got a laptop which i would also like to USE on the internet, whilst keeping the desktop plugged in via a cable, can someone please tell me the other in which they go like i have on 1st/2nd line? Thankyou Do you intend to use the laptop wirelessly? If so, you will need a wireless router. Either way, you will need a router to split the modem connection between two computers. The setup goes :phone socket---- voyager modem---- router ------computer1, computer2 if it is cabled or the same but the laptop will be wirelessly. The router goes between the modem and the rest of the network, either way. Check with aol for proper router settings and protocols. yes i do intend to use it wirelessly. thankyou for the reply

Solve : backing up or syncing?

Answer»

Hi:
I'm trying to set up my desktop and laptop so they automatically sync each other's files, or at least so I can back up each one's files on the other. But I don't know how to get them to COMMUNICATE -- how to get them on the same network.
I have them physcially connected via a network adapter cable -- but then I run the Windows network diagnostic is tells me "Network Adapters -- FAILED." I've run Windows Network Setup Wizard but I must be doing something wrong because the other computer does not appear in My Network Places.
The desktop is a Dell running Windows XP Pro, laptop is IBM Thinkpad also running Windows XP Pro. They both get their internet connection via a wireless router at my home (Belkin).
Please help.
Thanks
RogerTake the cable away. The communication should be done via the router, unless you have a cross over cable. Since the router will work FINE, just use that. the first thing you need to do is make sure that file sharing is turned on. right click my documents, and choose properties (on both computers). Then choose the sharing tab, and select share folder. If sharing is off, it will ask you if you want to turn it on. say yes. Once both comuters are sharing my documents (or anything else, the process is the same) you will be able to find the shared folders, and printers, in network places. Good luck.credit goes to: http://www.softwaretipspalace.com/tech_and_tests/connect_windows_mac_linux.php

Setup Sharing in Windows:
Sharing of folders and printers on systems with Windows XP which contain SP2 ( Service Pack 2 ) is by default turned off, but it is very EASY to activate him:
Right mouse click on "My Network Places" and then choose Properties,
Again right mouse click on network connection with which you would to share files,
Choose "Properties" and mark option “File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Network" and then press OK button,
Now Windows XP is ready to share files and printers. To split directory with other computers in network right mouse click on directory which you would like to share (this is inside Windows EXPLORE) and choose "Sharing and Security", under tab "Security" confirm option "Share this folder on the Network". If you want to give a possibility to other users to delete this file from their computer which is in network you also need to confirm option "Allow network users to CHANGE my files" and press OK button. If you also want to give them on authority to share your printer which is connected on your computer press Start --> Printer and Faxes --> right mouse click on printer (or fax modem) which you want to share, choose "Sharing" and confirm option "Share this printer", write name of shared printer and press OK button

Also, Microsoft have a free software called "Synctoy" , this basically allows you to sync two computer or even two folder in two computer together, here is the URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E0FC1154-C975-4814-9649-CCE41AF06EB7&displaylang=en

Hope this helps.

Solve : Roommates seem to know what I am looking at.?

Answer»

I recently moved into a shared apartment with wireless Internet.
And roommates know what I am browsing through.
How are they doing this?
And how MUCH can they see?
Are they looking at the same screen as I am?
Or are they looking at a log of site addresses.
Ever since I have noticed this I've been limiting what I browse through.
It is the worst feeling being monitered.
I have to think twice about what I write in a simple E-mail.

And how do I prevent this?
Do I need to get my own apartment and account for that kind of luxury?
Please tell me what roommates with shared wireless internet are capable of!first of all a shared wireless internet connection is just that unless some access to your shared docs on your computer.which should only contain the minimum amount of STUFF like pics or documents. I would say they are snooping around on your computer when you are not there is a possibility but I'm not certain. I would also turn of file and printer sharing on your computer i would go through the network wizard to turn it off you should still be able to connect to the internet. Thanks for your reply.

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't know the password to my Laptop.
But I will turn off the file and printer sharing imediately after I get home.
I just don't know how much is possible in this situation.

Thanks again for your knowledge.okay sounds good and you're welcome anytime. if you need anymore help let me know or one of the other GUYS. We'll be glad to help youdepending on the wireless router being used they are probably just viewing a log the router keeps (after being told to do so). You can access this at "http://192.168.1.1" default passwords and usernames are usually both "admin".

Either that, or they had access to your laptop at some point (say, you accidentally forgot to turn it off or lock it at some point), at which point they became jerks and put a trojan or something on your machine.

Thank you for your reply.
Sorry for the late one.

One of the guys is really into computers.
I'm sure they are looking at the logs.
But Why do I get the feeling that they know what I write in the E-mails.
Isn't it some how possible to be looking at the same screen?
Or can they click on the logs and see that particular e-mail?

*censored* these roommates!.Quote from: Roomies on June 20, 2008, 05:19:40 PM

g*****N these roommates!.

hmm, not through the logs, I don't think- you should do a malware scan, if this fellow you know is good enough with computers and enough of a jerk he might have put something on your machine for the *censored* of it.

Another possibility is that they are simply recording all the packets and reconsituting all the data. Too me, this seems like an excessive waste of time to see what a roommate has placed in their E-mail, almost prohibitively so.

If you can access the router's setup, put a password on temporarily, and then you can demand that they stop their snooping habits or something, or you won't tell them the password. they'll be able to use internet, just not access any logs. That'll bug the heck out of them.I would say they are looking at the logs to see what websites you have accessed. As far as your emails, you should know that all email is sent in "plain text". There is no encryption on it. Since you are on the same network as they are, they COULD use a packet sniffer (a program that sees all the data that is sent in the network) to log what happens on the network. Then they just weed through it to some understandable text (most of it is in hex numbers) and can read your email since it is just plain text and not encrypted. Also, you said you don't think they know your password to login to your pc. Well, I got a surprise for you. There are programs, mainly in Linux, that when inserted into your pc and boot up from it, will find out what your password is. So you're not really safe in your thinking that they wouldn't know your password. If they did find your password, then they could have installed some program on your pc to monitor what you do.

Again, we can only take your word for it. You haven't explained to anyone how you know they know what sites you have visited. This could all be in your head. Quote from: brett74 on May 02, 2008, 03:53:18 PM

all MS Windows are in workgroup MSHOME by default. If you are on the same network, and they are on the MSHOME workgroup, and you have default administrator password blank, or something easy, they can access your entire harddrive.

I would change your workgroup to something not default.

I have a laptop computer and I am trying to HOOK up or LINK to my brother-in-laws internet service through my Wi-Fi, but every time I go to my Wireless Network Connections and I find his 2Wire listed, soon as I hit on it I'm asked for a network key. Is their anyone who can tell me where I can find this key if he doesn't have the disc ANYMORE He apparently has WEP or WAP encryption set on his wireless router. He needs to log into his router and it will tell him what the keys are, it will be a string of hexadecimal characters...not easy to remember. Then PLUG those into your pc when prompted.

Anyone know what's going on?I'd probably contact your ISP on this one. It could just be ambiguous attacks but they'd be able to give you a more clear ANSWER I'd assume then any community member. However, just in case I think your question would be better in the Networking section so I'll also move this question there.I have a Netgear router and get a couple of these a day as well. I tried contacting my ISP and they didn't even know what a DOS [denial of service] attack was. Morons.

Anyway, like Admin said, you could try contacting your ISP and see if they're a bit more intelligent than mine, maybe they'll be able to help you out. I've had nothing negative happen from it myself.

Solve : weird internet problem?

Answer»

I can not view my business web page- when i go to the page- i get sent to the dell page stating that the page could not be found. The site is http://coreyconcepts.com
5 other people i asked can view it fine from their computers except the other computers in my house. I called my service provider and they can access my page too. They said it might be my router. But I can go to ANY other site EXCEPT my HOME page and another site that I use to access my web- email. that site is http://64.8.116.85/horde
Also, I can not get any emails through my outlook that are from my business email. I was able to get emails when I used my service provider email address, but not my company incoming mail.
It seems like it is only stuff relating to my business web site and emails, but everyone else can view and use them just fine.
PLEASE HELP
We need more info..

What OS are you using? What browser? With regards to your Outlook problem i think my office had a smiler problem, give me a day to get back to you.

List your operating system and internet browser.

Edit - Just to let you know the web site you provided i could not access.
from my experience it seems like it's not OS or Browser problem.

open up MS Command prompt and try to tracert to 64.8.116.85

  • press WINDOWS KEY + R
  • TYPE cmd
  • dos like window will open
  • type tracert 64.8.116.85

it will go max of 30 hops, but it if stops, it let's you know what the last IP was it could get to
I have a hunch it is your DNS settings, but do tracert first and see what you get.
i am using windows xp and internet explorer
sam- i tried what you told me to and it stopped after #14 - stating "request timed out" from 15 on down

the last lines before that was:
12 66-118-16-10.texlink.com
13 Request timed out
14 64-8-100-6. yourhostingprovider.net
15 Request timed out

I am using 2 different laptops in the house and having the same problems on both of them. Someone suggested a router problem so I connected my laptops directly into my modem to bypass the router and I could not get online at all- to any web site. But when I use my router I can get to all websites except the two I mentioned before... and I still can not get any email using my company pop and smtp
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much- Chrisywhen you connect your laptop directly to your (cable?)modem. you should unplug the power on your cable modem for about 5 minutes and then plug it back in.

who is your ISP?
whay type of router is it?
who initially configured the router?

contact ISP and ask for help for configuration if needed.
if you are comfortable, maybe you should set the router to factory defaults.

Solve : Computer router?

Answer»

I looked in past questions and couldnt find any to MATCH mine
i have a belkin G on it which says 125 HSM (i am not sure what this MEANS)
At the minute i have 1 DESKTOP pc conecected, 2 laptops connected through wireless and an xbox 360 connected through wires. Recently my internet has been disconncecting regularly, is this because the router is overloaded? if so does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it....thanks ...Garfywell, to answer part of a non existent question...lol:

The 125 HSM stands for High Speed Mode, and it means that the router will pass wireless traffic at 125Mbps rather then the standard of 54Mbps.

As for your real question:

I would look at who the ISP is as well as the router. If it is cable, it could be a high usage time, as cable is shared by all who connect to it. If it is DSL, then this may not be the issue. Is the xbox lagging as well at these times? It may be sometype of spy ware on the computer, I would make sure they are all as clean as possible. You could try having only one computer connected to the router, and see if it slows down, this will give you a better idea of what may be happening.

Sorry I am not that much help, but there are several things that could be affecting this.

Solve : showing internet speed?

Answer»

Hi People,
I used to use a USB modem to access the NET and this showed a "Monitor" icon in the bottom r/h corner of my desktop. If I right clicked on that I was able to see how fast my connection was (whether that was a true figure is debatable). However, since installing a Siemens SE587 wireless router some while ago I have no "Monitor" icon. I just wondered if there was a way for me to show/check speed like I could before.

THANK you.

Solve : MAC/physical address is all zeros?

Answer»

I just got my new laptop and my physical address is showing all zeros. I went to add it to my MAC address filter on my wireless ROUTER and I couldn't add it due to the blank address. I temporarily disabled the MAC filter and am now able to access the wireless signal after entering the pass key.

I tried the the following at the command prompt:

ipconfig/all
ipconfig/release
ipconfig/renew

I tried it while being connected with the ethernet cable and then using the wireless signal. I rebooted the router and restarted my computer after doing the above using each mode of connection.

I went to the support chat service for my computer and they told me to delete the driver and then reinstall. I'm afraid if I do that, it may drop my wireless ability altogether! Also, there are 3 different things listed in my network drivers.

Under network adapters, it lists:

Atheros AR5895 Wireless Network Adapter
Broadcom NetLink (TM) Ethernet
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

I tried the "update driver" function on each one first. There was no change on the physical address and yes, I did restart my computer.

Do I dare delete and reinstall the drivers? If so, which one, or all? Is there another option here?

I don't think I have a faulty network card or it wouldn't allow me to connect to the internet at all, would it?

I'd appreciate any help!

Thanks!

1. MAC address filtering seems like a lot of trouble. Can you use DHCP?
2. If you delete the drivers, Windows will automatically reinstall them upon reboot.
3. Under network adapters, it lists:
Atheros AR5895 Wireless Network Adapter - WiFi (Wireless)
Broadcom NetLink (TM) Ethernet - Wired
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter - Win7 virtual adapter (I'm not familiar with it)
4. That operation rarely functions.
5. It can't hurt and sometimes does repair them. You're not actually deleting the driver, only the REFERENCE to it.
6. Are you saying it works when wired, but not when wireless? As stated before, you have 2 network cards, wireless & wired.

BTW: You can get updated driver for Atheros AR5895 from your computer maker or maybe here: http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-drivers.php1. MAC address is really not much of a bother. I don't know what DHCP is.

2. Do I delete all three? (referencing that which is listed under point #3)

6. My internet works with both wired and wireless.

And thanks for responding to my questions Com.Commando!Only the Atheros, the others are working. Get the REPLACEMENT driver 1st, just in case the existing one doesn't work.
Is your existing version different?
This one is: Version: 9.2.0.104

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)]The Atheros version I have is 9.2.0.316. Should I just go to the Atheros site and see if I can downoad the same version? No. BTW, what is make & model of laptop? My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5733z-4445. My Toshiba Satellite died after only 2 and half years and I couldn't afford much at this time. It works fine for what I NEED right now. I'm not a gamer so I didn't need the topline processor.

I don't know what you mean by this. I think you are confusing LAN with WAN. Your ISP provides you with a Public IP, yours is shown in my signature. A physical address would be the MAC address, which is unique to every individual network item ever manufactured, i.e. Billions; specifically: 281,474,976,710,656 possible MAC addresses

There is a telephone downstairs. I'll disconnect it and try a retest when I get chance later on. I'll check on the filters too and report back.
The filter need to be on EVERY telephone.

But i'm beginning to think its a BT problem. Do you know your Download load usage? BT has been known to THROTTLE heavy users.I have attached a program I use to diag other networks at work. If it is not there let me know and I will find another way to get the file to you.

I've been in touch with BT. They said to take off the bottom of the BT box that's attached to the wall, and try using the engineers test port. Also said to try new filter. Tried these things and still have very low speed. Is there perchance a filter between the wall jack and the modem. If so remove it and try the connection most modems come with a filter built in and do not need on there.

If there is a PHONE coming off the modem remove the filter from there.

You proply answered this earlier and I may be missing it...

1. Have you tried rebooting the modem?
2. Seeing if connecting a cable to the laptop and turn off the wifi if the speed improves?
3. If there are other computers are they showing the same speeds? How do they connect?
Thank you all for your suggestions. I installed new filters and a brand new BT home hub I got from a mate, still got slow speed. I contacted BT and ASSURED them I'd done everything I could at my end. They said their network engineers would look into it. It worked! Within about four hours my speed had gone from 320Kbps to 1700Kbps! Depending on usage my average speed now fluctuates between 1200kbps and 1700kbps. It was BT's line that was at fault after all. But credit to them, they got it sorted quickly and without charge.

Thanks again for your help, I'll always come back to this forum for my computer advice.
I have used BT as an ISP before and although a little more expensive than others their customer service is second to none, but in saying that, i'm now with TalkTalk and never had a problem, they've even given me half price for 6 months for being a loyal customer. You dont get that very often.

Glad you got it sorted.

Solve : INTERNET?

Answer»

Cannot display the WEBPAGE comes up when i try to connect. where to start? Which website?

Power cycle your modem & router. Double check to make sure your wires are plugged in or your wireless is CONNECTED Using IE8, go to tools, internet options, advanced tab, RESET BUTTON on the bottom right. Turn proxy settings off, do a virus scan, etc etc etc.ALSO, post the results of an "ipconfig /all" from the command prompt (assuming you're using Windows). Also a good way of determining where the issue lies.

Solve : Is there such network devices??

Answer»

I am looking for an Ethernet version of a KVM switch. I don't KNOW if there is such device and if there is, what it's called.

Basically I have a network that I've created where I want to test different network attacks and simulate other labs that I have read in a book that a professor recommended to me. But I have this setup as a completely different network then the one that has internet access to prevent any bad stuff from leaking out into the ISP's network. Would there be a way that I could get some sort of device so be able to support three networks and switch between them with the push of a button?

I'm not looking for a managed switch as that is a bit costly. Any ideas? The is going to be rather direct and blunt. Here on this forum they take a very dim view of spam or any other attempt to promote a product by using this form.
If I am mistaken, I apologize.
I believe I know the product you are fishing for, is made here in the United States, and is called a mechanical Ethernet switch. Frankly, I think it's a bad idea. Allow me to explain.

The KVM switch is often a mechanical device that is used by an administrator has to reduce the number of keyboards and monitors and mice on his desk at one time. This is not sort of thing that a user would normally use in day-to-day activities. Those kind of switches control either low speed devices, or devices that do not require synchronization for the kind of work the administrator does. When he throws the switch is monitor will momentarily lose SYNC, but he doesn't really care.

No then, If a user had to switch back and forth constantly between two computers than one monitor using a mechanical switch it would be very IRRITATING. If for some reason a user needs to quickly switch between video sources, they ought to be synchronized.

Now here is why I am very critical of a mechanical Ethernet switch. There is no easy way for the user to know when the network is or is not active or when it might send another packet . Any chemical switch would certainly disturb the connection.

In the event that you and quickly need to go from one network to another, you can't. You could set up a patch panel and simply unplug the cord from one connection and plug it into another. That would be no better or WORSE than using a mechanical switch. Actually, it's probably a little better. When you switch to another network it's going to take a while for the connection to repair itself, unless you just happen to have a fixed IP address for your workstation. Even so, physically disconnecting your workstation from one network and plug it into another is very annoying to the network. It is much more elegant for the workstation to log off of one network and log on to another. That sort of thing can be done in software.

Now if you're testing security software, and the network you are working with are very important, you should rethink your entire project. If your network is serious you will not use it as a test ground for anything. You only test security issues with a special setup that keeps you absolutely off of your commercial network.

If this sounds very, very opinionated, it is. But I do believe my opinion is shared by others who currently are working in the IT industry. Administrators and technicians who need to do occasional testing on an active network will use patch cords and hit the network during that time when the disturbances are least likely to interfere with the work of others.

Anyway, if you wish to use mechanical switches to do what you're wanted to, they have been around for a long time. These types of switches are sometimes called leaf switches. They are very reliable, have very low crosstalk, and can be configured or purchased either as make before break or break before make operation. They were/are commonly used both in the telecommunication industry and the broadcast industry are many years.

Yes, I am often very, very wrong. If so, somebody else will correct me.

Solve : Not connecting to internet at all?

Answer»

Me and my friend got Sky broadband on friday, and since we were away have only just been ABLE to install it last night. My laptop was fine on install, it connected instantly.

However, my friend tried to get wireless internet on Sunday and couldnt, she could however get internet with the cable. Yesterday when I got mine working, hers wouldnt work at all for the internet, and it still isnt today.

I have reset the router 3 times, uninstalled and INSTALLED sky each time as well, it still wont connect. I have tried turning off the WINDOWS firewall, as well as avg, neither made any difference. I have gone through every single one of the checks sky has advised us to do from the cd, changing the ip, tried changing it from WPA to WEP ENCRYPTION, didnt work. Nothing is working. It cant be the wireless router as mine is working, yet my friend has been able to get internet wirelessly before, and she could get internet from using a dongle.

Her laptop is Windows Vista as well as mine, HP, but thats all I know I'm afraid.

Thanks for any help since I have RUN out of ideas. are you sure that the wireless switch on your computer isnt turned off by accidentQuote from: laker_fan on October 26, 2010, 12:56:24 PM

are you sure that the wireless switch on your computer isnt turned off by accident

Yeah. I even turned it off deliberately and back on again to try and got nothing.Ok, so your friend is able to connect to your wifi router when she uses a dongle, but not with the built in wifi card?

On her machine:

Have you checked device manager for any issues (red crosses or yellow !'s or ?'s)?

On your router:

Is MAC address filtering setup?

In general:

Is she able to access the internet when using an ethernet cable directly from her laptop to the router?

Solve : My PC won't connect to my home internet, but my girlfriends mac will. Help!?

Answer»

Hi-

I recently bought a HP PAVILION DV6. Everywhere I've used it it has connected to the internet with no problem, except, annoyingly, at my house. My girlfriend has a 10-yr-old Mac that connects without a problem here, but I had a friend here last night with his newish PC, and that wouldn't connect EITHER. I know I have the password correct, and all the troubleshooter keeps telling me is to turn off and back on the router, which I have already done on several occasions. I'm not sure if this is important, but in the network connections it says the security type for the network is WPA-PSK and that the radio type is 802.11g. Is there a simple (or EVEN complicated) answer that I'm missing? I don't know a WHOLE lot about COMPUTERS, and this is becoming very frustrating as it has been going on now for 2 months. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Post the results of an "ipconfig /all". See if that can narrow it down any.

Solve : Laptop's wireless adapter resets every few minutes. - Thinkpad SL410?

Answer»

I have had this laptop for 7 months, and ever since 2 weeks after I got it, no matter what wireless network I am connected to, the wireless adapter shuts off after a few minutes of internet use (a red X over the wireless icon in the notification area). It stays disconnected for 10 seconds or so, and then turns back on. 3 or so minutes later it goes off again. It's not so bad if I set it to connect automatically to a certain wireless network, because all I have to do is refresh my web pages, but I would STILL like to take care of this HICCUP in my system once and for all.

My computer's information is below. Please let me know if you need any more.

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
COMPUTER: Lenovo Thinkpad SL410 (type 2842)
CPU: Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T5870 - 2.00GHz
RAM: Samsung DDR3 RAM - 4GB (part# M471B5673EH1-CF8)
HDD: Hitachi - 320GB (model# HTS545032B9A300)
WIRELESS ADAPTER: Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN (This is what is resetting.)

Its a driver issue. Check this out http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-025395.htm

Follow the step until step #3, Do NOT uninstall yet. Check the status of your device. Post back."This device is working properly." I also RECENTLY installed the newest version of the driver, (13.1.1.1, dated 1/13/2010) but it didn't fix the problem when I did that.Wait...I guess I don't have the latest one installed. There's a new one, 13.2...Okay, I installed the newest driver, and the Intel Update Utility confirms that I have it installed, but the reset is still happening...Try following my 2ND post and this time under driver menu, used the "roll back driver" then see if it will give the correct driver. If not, boot to safemode(F8) then update driver under "driver menu". IF you get negative results again, on safemode, used the "roll back driver" option. Did you use the "update" option under driver menu when you updated the driver?

Did your laptop came with that wi-fi connection glitch on the first day you bought it?Ok, I booted into safe mode, rolled back the driver, and updated it again in the driver tab. So far it seems to be working, but I'll post again if it continues not to work.

The problem started up about two weeks after I got the computer.Well, after all that, it didn't solve the problem. Unfortunately, the computer was stolen, so now I guess someone else will have the problem to deal with.Quote from: dkfinger on November 22, 2010, 03:21:41 PM

There may also be a way for you to INCREASE your routers wireless signal strength, but you will need to find that in the manual for the router. If it's SIMPLY a matter of distance there isn't much we can do for you.I also had a similar problem, but i bought a wireless booster and the wireless signal got stronger. Also make sure your wireless network is secure, if other people in the neighborhood are using it, the strength of your signal will diminish. Quote from: mkimbiaji on November 19, 2010, 02:42:17 PM

Also make sure your wireless network is secure, if other people in the neighborhood are using it, the strength of your signal will diminish.
Pure Rubbish.Yeh your garage must be blocking the signal out, which doesn't suprise me if it's made out of the same stuff ours is ... If you use your laptop in your garage a lot it may be worth looking at getting a Wireless Access Point / Signal Booster / Repeater that is positioned closer to the garage to boost the signal.

Before you go out and buy something to boost the signal, just try moving your Router to where you would put whatever hardware you would be buying and see if you can get a signal in your garage then, if you can get a signal then an access point should definately work, if you can't get a signal then you may need to think about a potential wired solution.

Solve : Vista Admin Issues?

Answer»

So I got a new device to hook up to my home network and need to enter my WEP key. I misplaced the paper I wrote it down on, it's not written on the modem, all those simple little things I've tried. However, I think I found a way to do it but I need a little help. So on my LAPTOP (which is already on my home network) I went to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Wireless NETWORKS. I then right CLICK my network and click properties. After that I go to my security tab and see the WEP key.. except it's encoded with those stupid BLACK dots and I can't see what it is. There is a button called "Show Characters" but I am not able to click it. I figured it WOULD have something to do with not being an administrator.. except I have the only account on my laptop and I am an administrator. So if someone could either tell me how to fix this or another way of obtaining my WEP key short of calling Verizon, I would greatly appreciate it.Try this tool:

I have 3 icons and only 1 that is working 'at the moment'. There is no need to get rid of them. What if you ever change your connection in the future?? Quote

This is not a vital issue. It happens all the time. Just for knowledge sake how do you get rid of those, as i have a few of those as WELL. Because when you right CLICK them it doesn't give you the option to delete them.

Solve : Laptop Stops Connecting to Internet?

Answer»

I am not tech-savvy, and I appreciate any help that anyone can provide.
My laptop suddenly does not connect to the internet. Our home network is fine: my son has a desktop that connects fine with the ethernet cable, and my other son's laptop connects fine with wireless.
Yesterday, my computer worked normally. Today, with ethernet cable there is no acknowledgement that the cable is even plugged into it. And the wireless reads our home network and says I am connected with "limited connectivity", however I cannot open any browsers or connect anywhere.
I have Vipre Premium protection and do a full scan every night.
I have not downloaded anything, changed anything, or done anything new or different at all for a long time.
It is an HP Pavilion dv5 Entertainment PC, Vista Home Premium 64-bit with SP2.
I have run through all the troubleshooting tools on the laptop.
The Windows Network Diagnostics shows my Wireless Network Connection is enabled. When I click on the connection to diagnose it, a screen comes up that says:
"The network adapter "Wireless Network Connection" is not correctly configured to use the IP protocol". Then I have two choices:
First choice: "The Network Adapter "Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN" is experiencing driver or hardware related issues". When I click for information, I am directed to check for driver UPDATES (my drivers show they are up-to-date and working PROPERLY). However, with no internet connection I am unable to fully check for updates. HOWEVER I have always enabled automatic updates, and I always update even the optional ones, so I don't think an out-of-date driver is the problem.
Second choice: "Make sure your Internet Protocol bindings are correct". When I check the configuration settings, all items are selected, including TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6, which are the two specifically mentioned.
So I'm stumped. And frustrated. And HOPING that someone can shine a light on this problem. Thank You!1. Refer here --> http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistanetworking/thread/a57877cd- 8b88-458e-b4a6-5300cf57696b
2. Microsoft Support(Reset TCP/IP,Manual method) --> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357With regards to your Second Choice:

Go back to where you checked IPv4 and IPv6 where selected, click on IPv4 and then click on Properties, in the box that appears make sure that those settings are correct, for example, if you haven't stated a specific static ip address to your laptop, then ensure that your IP addresses and your DNS servers are being obtained automatically, or if you have configured static addresses ensure these are correct, paying perticular attention to the default gateway setting (this would affect internet access without affecting the network)

Once you have checked the above then open the 'Run' box and paste the following in and then press enter:

cmd /c ipconfig /all>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

This will open Notepad and will contain information specific to your TCP/IP settings, once you have run that command, copy and paste that in and that may reveal where the problem lies. (COMPARE it to your son's before hand if you want to first, just do the exact same thing on his, as you compare, the Subnet mask, Default Gateway and DNS Address will all be the same, all that should be different is your IP address.

In the meantime some things you can try to try and diagnose the problem:

1) Go into favourites and try and open one of the links that Microsoft saved in there for you (Those links will definately be correct and the site should be up and running, this will confirm if your internet is completely down or not)

2) Copy and paste the following into your address bar and see if it brings up Microsoft.com or not - 207.46.197.32

Please also let us know the results of the those.

(That's probably similar to the above but another explanation can't hurt lol)

Solve : I need to set up a wireless network.?

Answer»

Alright, so I live and rent out of someone else's house. How can I set up a WIRELESS network and is it possible to do so and not interfere with their internet, which they've specified I'm not to use? You'll need an internet connection via Cable/DSL to set up a wireless network. Then you can set up a wireless router.Quote from: unsustainable on October 12, 2010, 11:24:20 PM

..and not interfere with their internet, which they've specified I'm not to use?
You will need to contact the local ISP and arrange to get your own connection.I'd say it would be better to buy a wireless router and setup a network using one connection.

Today's router aren't difficult to setup, just as long as you can establish a connection you're good to go. Once you have that done, setup a share key to protect your network from unwanted leechers. Share that key with your tenant(s). There should be no degradation with your signal, pending number of people living in household that uses the Internet.

I myself have 2 tenants living in our basement, plus my sister staying with me for school, and our signal has been fine. I use torrents alot and haven't had a complaint yet. HOWEVER, if you're afraid of connectivity degradation, you can block keywords with your routers to prevents excessive downloading.

Since the OP hasn't responded we will have to wait and see.Quote from: unsustainable on October 12, 2010, 11:24:20 PM

The landlord's attitude about this is unfortunate and unreasonable. Do they expect you to have a second phone line or cable line installed? Would they allow that? I suspect not, so how do they expect you to get Internet access?

As hedgehog88 said, sharing an Internet connection should not be a problem. Does the landlord use a router? Perhaps you could offer to pay $10-$15 extra PER month in rent to persuade them to let you share their Internet connection or, if they have no router, offer to buy the router and set it up.Hi Everyone! You need to start your own thread to get support. If possible, you can try to manage others to share a common wireless network with you. But frankly speaking, I don't LIKE wireless network, it always works badly.

Solve : Realtime Bandwidth Usage Tracking?

Answer»

My ISP has a 25gb monthly limit for my account LEVEL. Every month we are banging up against the limit at the end of the month, some more than others. This month we are already at 19gb and the month is only half over. We have four people using three computers PLUS game consoles that are sometimes online too.

The ISP provides a tool to total monitor bandwidth usage but it is not in real time. Is there something that I can use that will show usage in real time and also show usage by individual machine so I can get a handle on who is using the most bandwidth?

My router is a Linksys WTR120N. It is secured with WPA2.

And yes, the ISP does offer plans with higher bandwidth limits, but that is not financially feasible right now. TWO programs that I have USED are NetLimiter Monitor and NetWorx (both are free).

These programs track the internet usage on the computer they are installed on so they need to be installed on each computer.

An advantage that NetLimiter has is that it can track bandwidth usage for each individual program.

Some advantages to NetWorx are that it can track "On-peak", "Off-peak", and "Unmetered" hours and that it can synchronize the usage total between the computers. (I have not tried the synchronizing feature YET.)

I do not know how you could monitor the game consoles.Thanks. That's something to get me going on.

How can i connect 2 computers by cable, at a distance of 18meters(60')approx, I cannot use wireless , work equip messes it up,I'm useing xp pro on both machines.thank you

You can daisy chain it with an RJ-45 cable ( commonly called ethernet cable). What exactly are you trying to accomplish with this though?i WOULD use a CROSSOVER cable though they look the same they are different JoshM is RIGHT they do have an RJ 45 CONNECTION but the funtionality of an ethernet cable and a crossover cable are different the way they transmit and recieve are not the sameYeah your right, forgot the name of it.Actually, the cable is referred to as either category 5, 5e, or 6. The connectors are RJ 45. The distance limitation is 100M so you will be fine.

I doubt you will be able to find a 18M off the shelf crossover cable, but any computer SHOP should be able to make one for you.

Solve : Winter Project: Server?

Answer»

Hey,
Winters coming around and I won't be able to enjoy the outdoors to the fact that I hate the COLD so I decided to start a project. I'd like to build a server of some sort. I've taught myself everything I know about computers through trial and error. I figured this would be a good way to grasp a better understanding of the networking side of things, which i lack experience in. If you guys have any good information on setting up a server that acts like NAS but can still be accessed from the internet I'd appreciate it. Once I gather enough info and feel comfortable with the process I'll go ahead and try and set one up. I plan on documenting the whole experience and posting it on the internet for later reference.

Much appreciated,
NateWill you be using *nix or Windows to do this? If the former, I have setup quite a few personal SSH and FTP servers over the years and would be more than happy to help where I can. There are also lots of good tutorials about it on Librenix and HowToForge.

If you're planning on using Windows, I'm afraid I may not be of much help. Pretty out of my element there.

Also, what are the specs on the machine you plan on using for this?Well at the moment I have a Dell Optiplex gx280. It has a Pentium 4 with windows xp on it with what i believe is a 512MB stick of ram. Software wise I can go either way. I myself am more familiar with windows but this project is meant to be a learning experience for me so I am more than willing to try whatever software you recommend. The budget is preferably around 200 dollars but my max is 300. Like I said tho I know very little about servers and networking so just giving your fair warning I may ask a lot of questions that you might find stupid or a no brain-er. ha ha I appreciate any help you can give me tho.I like your enthusiasm. One of the great things about running Linux on a home server is it can fit well withing any budget you have. I just transitioned away from Ubuntu, which is what I did the vast majority of my early learning on, so I would recommend that. Very easy to get a good, solid server up and running while still learning a lot in the process. I will forewarn you, though. The learning curve of *nix is very, very steep if you have an all Windows background. However, with that said, I'll be more than happy to help where I can. Just gotta keep an open mind and keep MOVING forward.

The hardware you have LISTED should be more than adequate for a personal server (depending on the use). Which brings me to my next question: what are you going to be using this server for? File Server? Proxy/Cache? HTPC? Once we determine the uses for it, it will be much easier to recommend more specific software packages and tools.

Well, I'd love to set up a HTPC but i find it a little useless since I don't have any HDTV in my house yet, so a file server would be a lot more use full to me. What software do you recommend?I personally prefer using FTP when doing a home server. Others like Samba, though. More of a personal PREFERENCE. I find FTP easier to setup, manage, and more compatible with various settings.

For this I would go the route of Ubuntu (or any distro of your choice) with VSFTPD, simple to setup and get going and very stable. If it's for a learning experience I would try every server software I COULD find. Linux would be a good start since it's mostly free. That will help you get used to using the command prompt if you are mostly used to Windows.

I've seen some older Windows server software on Bay for $100 or so (buyer beware). Unix won't be going away anytime soon.

Once you get comfortable with the command prompt, going from one OS to another isn't that hard.Quote from: rthompson80819 on October 31, 2010, 09:05:53 PM

Agree 100%. I've gotten so used to the *nix CLI that I install Cygwin on every Windows install I use personally.

FreeNAS. It's the easiest way to make a simple file server and it only uses about 20MB of space to install. It has CIFS (Samba), FTP, NFS, HTTP, BitTorrent, and a few more I can't remember. It also has JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 5 so if you have a lot of extra hdds, you can setup a RAID system without having a RAID card. The only downside to using it is it's so easy to setup, you probably won't learn much.

Solve : Adding WiFi to LAN drops connection?

Answer»

Sup guys. Tryin to figure out this mindbender. So heres the inital config before we get into details

2Wire Homeportal DSL Modem is primary source of connection
-Connects to Linksys Wireless router
--Connection from here goes into a 16 port hub to provide ample amount of connections for people in LAN
--Only wireless device not receiving issues is my iPhone.
Now for basic IP addressing

2Wire DSL modem
Router Address: 172.16.0.1
SUBNET Mask: 255.255.0.0

Linksys Wireless Router
Router Address: 10.0.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Now all computers connect through the 16 port hub which the Linksys router provides the 10.0.0# addresses.

So heres the issue...
Any computer that's connected via Ethernet doesn't have connectivity issues but when I connect a wireless laptop, my network gets scrambled and any connected nodes lose connection status. It comes to physically POWER cycling both modem and router to regain connectivity. Now keep in mind, ive had this issue with and without DHCP. Ive statically assigned computers, wired and wireless, before and still received this same issue.

Now just a small recap:
LAN mainly comprised of wired connections loses connectivity upon a wireless laptop being added to the network.
Not sure if its my configs between router/modem but its highly annoying.

PLEASE HELP

Thanks

Another side issue ive pondered is this. Feel free to ponder too.
Heres the situation based on CONFIGURATION

Situation 1:
2Wire Modem connects to Linksys router, which goes into 16 port hub. Now with this config my internet speed is up to par with 100mpbs throughput.

And

Situation 2
2Wire Modem connects directly to 16 port hub. With this config, internet speed lacks heavily and doesnt seem to obtain addresses or pretty much do anything

Once again, a side issue.Does the 16 port hub have any config page on it? Does it have any routing functionality or anything?Manual never showed any sort of configuration "how-tos". Oh and to correct my post, its a switch, not a hub. I know there is a fine line between the two. So yeah, its a switch. And once again, no, its not configurable. Id imagine it takes a connection and just branches it to available ports. But that still doesnt explain why a wireless laptop is connecting straight to the wifi in the Linksys router. I mean, its not connecting into the switch so I wouldnt see where the switch affects that situation.Still don't know the problem to this issue if anyone comes across this post. Your help is very much appreciated. One THING comes to mind; the 2Wire DSL modem has wireless channels, too. You have 2 wireless routers, the 2Wire and the Linksys. Is the wireless laptop connecting to the Linksys or the 2Wire? I know the 2Wire firewall must be configured through a wired connection to allow access by all downstream routers, etc. BTW, the Linksys router LAN address of 10.0.0.1 is not a valid LAN address. The default should be 192.168.1.1Heres an update:

Changed my Linksys router's IP address from 10.0.0.1 to 192.168.0.1 (basic class C address) and the subnet to 255.255.255.0. My 2Wire modem is still the 172.16.0.1/255.255.0.0 address setting. Ive successfully connnected wirelessly to the linksys router without any sort of disconnects through my laptop and iPhone. So as of now, I can close the topic with success. Btw, to answer the question, anything wireless connects through to the Linksys router due to its faster 54mbps speed as compared to the 2Wires 22mbps speed. Just better by default in my opinion. But anyway, all is well. Any other problems I have will probably be started within a new topic or maybe this one if any arise but for now, problem solved. My guess is the invalid config of the Linksys IP address. Dunno, im more of a specialist in computer software/hardware and not necessarily in anything Cisco related. Thanks for all the help UPDATE:

Shortly after my recent post I tested connectivity on my wireless laptop. Heres what I dont understand. I flipped the switch my laptop has for enabling my wireless connection, unplugged my ethernet cord connected to it and then proceeded to connect via wireless. Now what I dont get is this. After I connected, I turned my switch back off on the laptop and went to plug my ethernet cable back in. Upon doing that, I couldnt get a working connection as well as any other node connected to the switch in the LAN. Why is that? Why would shutting off a wireless node and bringing it back to a wired state disrupt the entire network, in turn, calling for either a restart of the router or every computer in the network. Please help me out on this one guys. Thanks Might be related : http://sofaware.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/1231038134/m/2641007234Quote from: Poissionnariat on October 18, 2010, 01:35:33 AM

Is DHCP enabled on the modem or switch? If not, nothing would get an address automatically in situation 2 anyway. Also with static addresses you'd probably need to setup static routes as well.DHCP is enabled on the modem/routers i have configured. The switch isnt configurable. Its a "plug and play" sorta switch. I just plug a cable into it and its auto configured. It has no addresses of its own or any configuration options.

Here is a picture I created visually describing how my network is set up.

Ill be looking into both the 2Wire and the Linksys modems and see if any settings are what they shouldnt be. Until then, hopefully we can figure out whats up. Dont be scared to get into depth about what I need to do. Im no pro at networking but I know my way around. 2 years of Cisco have branded my brain with at least some knowledge lol.

[recovering disk space - old ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]I suspect it's the hardware firewall built in to the 2-Wire. You may have to expand it's range of allowed IP addresses. The forum isnt letting me post 2 gif images of my 2wire and Linksys configurations to see if you could possibly see if something is not configured right.

The 2Wire only is connected to the Linksys router and the firewall built into the 2Wire modem has DMZ plus enabled. Meaning "All inbound traffic, except traffic which has been specifically assigned to another computer using the “Allow individual applications” feature, will automatically be directed to this computer. The DMZplus-enabled computer is less secure because all unassigned firewall ports are opened for that computer."

Now once again im trying to figure out why when my laptop connects wirelessly, all goes well, but when I turn the wireless switch back off on my laptop and reconnect my ethernet cable, the connection throughout the network is disrupted, forcing me to restart both the Linksys and 2wire modem. Why would that simple revert of connnection type do that?

Upon asking, I can provide anyone with type of configs for both the 2wire and Linksys. It wont let me post pictures so Ill end up typing it out.

Between my previous post and this one, I switched both configs to their default IP addressing ranges

2Wire is 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
Linksys is 192.168.2.1/255.255.255.0 (default was same of 2Wire so I increased it one range of addresses to prevent DNS issuesRemove the Linksys & see if the issues go away.
Or turn off the 2Wire wireless feature
You still have a DNS conflict somewhere.
http://support.2wire.com/?page=view&article=60I disabled the wireless feature on it when I originally bought the Linksys receiver. As I mentioned before, I only connect through the Linksys router due to its higher speed output (54mbps over 802.11N compared to the 2Wire's 11mbps over a 802.11B, i think). Both are DHCP enabled. I tried at one point to use static addressing but it still showed issues when connecting wirelessly and so on.Quote from: Poissionnariat on October 31, 2010, 12:11:22 AM
Both are DHCP enabled.

That's bad. Disable it on one of the devices.

Let me understand this correctly, you'll only using the Linksys as a Wireless Access Point (WAP), right? If that's the case, I'd be tempted to take it out-of-line (if you have a spare switch port) and let the 2Wire do the routing, firewalling & DHCP, and disable all the un-required features of the Linksys.

So it would go something like attached.

Solve : Picky wireless?

Answer»

I just got an Acer Aspire 5553G laptop and I've been getting weak signals in rooms away from where the router is. My old four year old COMPUTER works just fine but this brand new one SEEMS to not do so well. I'm running a shared WEP encryption connection and the router is a Netgear. As for some specs:

This is the computer I'm using now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115855Quote

I've been getting weak signals in rooms

Some Wireless Standards can get obstructed(walls) and interference from APPLIANCES that have signal frequencies. The weaker the signal RANGE your WLAN is capable, the harder it tends to receive. Finding the right spot away from this signals will help you maximize your wi-fi connection.Hi, I had the same PROBLEM with an Acer laptop. The signal showing on it was weaker than a desktop pc when placed side by side. I installed bigger aerials on my linksys router but didnt help much. My solution was to hard wire another router closer to where the laptop was used. The second router was configured as an access point, and I now have full strength showing on both laptop and pc. The only downside to this is connecting the 2 routers by ethernet cable, you may or may not be able to easily do that?

Solve : XP SP3 wireless network and firewall not working?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 desktop. I am connecting to the internet via a USB Netopia wireless card. 802.11g the device MANAGER says it is working properly. About a week AGO both my internet and windows firewall stopped working. I did various resets of both the network, and the firewall. I tried to reinstall both of them but to no avail. I am noticing that there are several critical services that will not start with the Windows ICS being one of them. All of the appropriate files they refer to seem to be in order. I ran sfc /scannow and nothing was reported. The AT&T U-verse modem was reset as well. At this point I am completely stumped. Oh I forgot to mention, I had several pieces of spyware that CAME up during many of the safe mode scans I ran as well. Now After running hijack this and combofix I was told there is nothing visibly infecting the computer. Any ideas?
Thank you.Can your get SERVICE with another PC?Yes, in fact two DIFFERENT laptops were able to connect. I am writing from one now.

Solve : Strange connection issue on small LAN?

Answer»

Its a bit long winded but ill give it a go

I have SMALL home network with a PC and Thin Client connected to a cheap switch which is also connected to a Dlink DWL-2100 Wireless AP set up as a a wireless AP\bridge to my BT Homehub

The PC connects fine to the Wireless AP, BT Homehub and the internet and always has done.

The thinclient is a cheap PC i have bought which runs a linux live distro from USB but wont connect to anything but will ping my PC

PC IP - 192.168.1.75
Thinclient IP - 192.168.1.80
Wireless AP IP - 192.168.1.99
BT Homehub IP - 192.168.1.254

I have tried various live distro's on the PC including BartPE (Windows)
Tried varios ports in thr swtch swapping them around
Tried with just the thinclient and AP (Without the PC plugged in)

So IM kinda stuck now, Why can the PC connect to the internet fine but not the Thin Client, which can ping my PC but not the wireless AP?

Any help appreciated
Thanks
TopherWhich model of BT Homehub? Firmware version?
Where are you? In the UK?
Cab you use a gateway other than the BT Hoemhub?
Why do you need the D-link AP?Not sure on the Homehub (Black one lol), Although this is working fine an as the main PC can connect fine
Im in the UK
The gateway of the Homehub is 192.168.1.254
I use the Wireless AP because I managed to get a hold for free and my PC which dosnt have a wireless card, And is now suitable as there are two PC's to connect to the wireless, both without wirelessAll models of the Home Hub have at least two Ethernet ports and one USB port. I believe. So I don not quite understand you CONFIGURATION. The wireless should not be used if you can not run two cables from the Home Hub to the PCs.
Also, using an AP as a client is not easy. I am not even sure if you can do that, but it seems that you did get it to work somehow.

Also, why don't you let the Home Hub assign all the local IPs ? The .254 would indicate that it is a DHCP THING. Did you set up automatic DHCP?

Most residential gateways would assign the local IPs this way:
192.159.1.1
192.159.1.2
192.159.1.3
192.159.1.4
... and so on up to maybe 50 as the last in the group. Not if that is how the Host Hub works, then both you PCs are out of the range of the Host Hub.

I have to user the wireless (Instead of wired ports) as my PC is quite far away from the ROUTER

The homehub uses DHCP as my housemates also use the wireless but ive checked the IP ranges and all the IP address im using are within the correct rangeOK, I don't have documentation for that router. I was guessing based on personal experience.
So you did not assign the IPs yourself?
Can you provide a diagram of how things con connected?
Have you ever got internet to work on the Linux machine?

Wireless USB adapters are very cheap, But some do not work with Linux.

I have never used a D-Link device as a client. Bat maybe it is possible.

Can you borrow a wireless card from a friend?
Or do a Google on Cheap Wireless Cards for Linux
Here on this side of the pond we can buy them under $15.
I am thinking that the DLink AP is hard to use and may be the problem. Did you verify that it works with the other PC?

Solve : Drops connection and does not allways connect?

Answer»

Hello, One of my computers is a 5 year old HP All-In-One RUNNING Vista with a internal Wireless Card. I have a Netgear N router that connects to a cable modem. The HP looses the connection. On
reboot, it sometimes connects. When I go to Network Places and click on Connect, I receive an Alert Box that asks me to Connect the Cat 5 Cable. All the other Wireless items in my home connect just great. The HP is only 20 Feet Away. Do I need a new Wireless Network Card and is their a way to test the one in the HP? ThanksIf you are using wireless only you should disable the wired adapter in device manager. However at 20 feet away MAYBE you should just run a cable and get better speeds than wireless, if possible. As for the wireless card I an inclined to think that is the problem if other wireless devices work FINE. You can always buy one and try it for a few days. Most stores allow hardware to be returned within 14 to 30 days so if that doesn't fix the problem you can TAKE it back.Thanks.
