Solve : Port forwarding through second (bridged) router? |
|
Answer» Sorry, in the first two cases the Airstation was still bridged, the third example was as a ROUTER. Quote from: Schop on June 17, 2008, 06:54:37 PMNo connection further than the Airstation: Indeed, just a stupid mistake. It was kinda late when i tried (just before the post) I'll TRY again with .2 for the Airstation. Further than that though there are no mistakes: I double checked and those first two situations from my last post are correctly described. (In bridged mode, that is.) (edit) Just tried again, the mistake was just in my writing. The Airstation WAN wás in fact set to .1.2 and didn't work as described. If you set up both devices as routers, can you ping the Livebox? What is the output? (TTL, I'm interested in TTL value mostly). If Airstation is set in bridge mode, what is the response of the Livebox to ping? Both in router mode gives the following PING results: Livebox: 1ms, TTL=253 Airstation: >1ms, TTL=64 Results are exactly the same on every try. What bothers me is that when I tried Google, the TTL is lower than that of the livebox: 243 The TTL becomes smaller with every hop (router/gateway) the icmp signal passes. I don't understand why Livebox replies with TTL 253 (it should be 254) and Airstation with 64 (it should be 255)... If you connect a computer directly to Livebox, what TTL do you obtain from ping to Livebox?I was just reading a bit about TTL ( didn't know what it was at first) on Wikipedia but.. As I understand it should start out as 255 (at the PC or at the first hop?) and become one less with each hop as you say. What I do not understand is that it decreases all the WAY to 64 just to the Livebox, I would expect 253 (or 254?) according to what little I just read. You state it should be 255 at the Livebox which I also don't get :S Sorry, this is sorta off-topic but I'm just eager to learn I have to read about TTL, I don't know how to advice you in this moment. I understand now the 64 value: it is the DEFAULT value your Airstation router will respond. I don't think that the TTL [LE] is the problem [/LE] in your situation (I don't think the TTL is the problem for your case). I don't understand though that 253, it should be 254.The 253 might be because the Airstation is so sophisticated it appears like two hops to the package.. Just thinking loud though. Weird thing, that TTL. Wikipedia said it was measured in seconds, stored in hex and displayed in decimal... or something like that. Really weird thing to me but never mind. |

Solve : Printer Sharing between XP and Vista? |
|
Answer» Hello, I think your different OS is problem to share the printer .If you use network printer both computers OS must be same.1. Windows XP Printer. Normally when you define a local printer on Windows XP, you would specify all operating systems you want it to support. Not sure how you do this for Vista unless there's some kind of "other" selection. You should also be able to modify the printer specification later to specify support for additional operating systems. (Look for this capability, it's hidden there somewhere.) Obviously, you'll need access to printer drivers for all of the operating systems you want the Windows XP printer to support. If you do this correctly, the first time another machine connects to use the printer, the appropriate driver will download to it (from the Windows XP host machine). The other option is to download and install the Vista printer driver for the device directly on the Windows Vista machine. Then use that driver when you add a "network" printer (logically define) to the Vista machine. You need to know I have almost no Vista experience and have never "added" a printer to a Vista machine. 2. Computer Browser Service. On Windows XP, people frequently complain about not seeing the "other" computers and their resources. This has to do with the "Computer Browser" service. At least one of the computers on the LAN (the one that's powered "on" most of the time), should have the "Computer Browser" service running. It will build and maintain a "master" list of the other computers in your workgroup, so when they go to look at "My Network Places" this list can be sent to them without having to build one from scratch for each request. Not positive, but I believe it will only show computers that have the service for "file and printer sharing" installed and enabled. 3. Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol. I'm not familiar with this protocol, but have to wonder whether it has replaced the "Computer Browser" as the preferred method for network discovery on Windows XP and Vista. From the "Microsoft Vista Home Networking Setup and Options" link given later: Quote Computers running Windows XP that cannot be detected probably do not have the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol installed on the machine. You can download the Link Layer Topology Discovery Responder from the Microsoft website here to install on Windows XP PCs. 4. Reference(s). Look at the following links: Why Can't I See My Computer on the Network? Microsoft Vista Home Networking Setup and Options Windows Vista Password Protected File Sharing Vista - Troubleshoot file and printer sharing Vista - Troubleshoot problems with computers not appearing on the network map Look at the following downloadable Microsoft DOCUMENTS (primarily for Windows XP): Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows Computer Browsing for SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows Troubleshooting Computer Browsing on SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows 5. Firewalls. You may have to modify your firewall configuration(s). Quote from: oz1222 on June 22, 2008, 06:19:00 PM I cannot see my desktop in the network from my laptop computer and I cannot see my laptop from my desktop. They both have functioning internet connection (Desktop is wired to my highspeed modem by usb which is, in turn, connected to my wireless router. The laptop is connected wirelessly through the wireless router) I would think that because both of the computers are connected to the internet through the same network, that they would show up on each respective computer...but they do not. I'm really confused as to what your network configuration is. Normally I would expect it to be: Cable/DSL Modem | | <-- ethernet cable WAN port--> | Wireless Router ~~ LAN wireless link ~~ Laptop (Vista) LAN port (wired)--> | | <-- ethernet cable | Desktop Computer (Windows XP Home) In the above configuration, all of the LAN computers would have "private" IP addresses (which should have the same network ID and subnet mask, but different host IDs). Your public internet address would be assigned by the ISP to the WAN port of the wireless router. If your desktop computer is truly connected by USB to your high speed modem, then I would expect it to have the ISP assigned public IP address (which would be incompatible with any LAN computers with private IP addresses). You didn't say what the make and model number of your high speed modem is. I'm confused. How about you?I was also wondering about your network setup. Why is your desktop computer connected directly to the modem rather than to the router? As dahlarbear attempted to diagram, the router would normally be connected to the modem via ethernet cable and then all computers would connect, either wired or wireless, to the router.Quote from: dahlarbear on June 23, 2008, 04:07:55 AM 1. If you do this correctly, the first time another machine connects to use the printer, the appropriate driver will download to it (from the Windows XP host machine)."Normally when you define a local printer on Windows XP". I believe this means open Control Panel in your Windows XP system, select Printers and Faxes, right click on the printer and select Properties, select the Sharing tab, click on Additional Drivers button, and then select one or more of the options there regarding OS for which you want to install drivers. I have three printers set up in my Windows XP desktop computer and, if I go through this procedure for each of them, none of them show Windows Vista as a choice. Nevertheless, I successfully added two of these printers to the Printers on my Compaq Notebook computer and can print from them via wireless connection. As I recall, for the older printer, a Canon BJC-2000, Windows Vista seemed to have drivers; I did not need to install drivers for it. With the other printer, a Canon BJC-3000, I did directly install drivers on the Vista computer. Thank you EVERYONE for your responses. I am new at this, so it may take me a couple days to get through all of the details. Here is my set-up the best I can describe. The reason I have my desktop computer connected to my SpeedStream high speed modem through a USB is because I could not get the ethernet router in my desktop to work. It just wont connect. One would think that the problem might be the ethernet port on the high speed modem or maybe even my ethernet cord, but I tested them on the ethernet port on my laptop and it worked fine. Here is the set up: Desktop computer------(USB cord)-------SpeedStream Modem (Ethernet port) ! ! (ethernet cord) ! ! (WAN Port) Trendnet wireless router \ \ Laptop connected through wireless connection to Router Additional Details: I can ping my Desktop through my laptop, but I cannot Ping my Laptop from my Desktop It worked at one point in time, which is what is confusing me. I appreciate any feedback! Oh...also Quote 1. I have the XP drivers for the printer installed on the XP desktop and the Vista drivers installed on my laptop (downloaded from HP). 1. North American download support on trendnet.com website for: TEW-631BRP 2. Try again? Quote from: oz1222 on June 21, 2008, 11:58:51 AM I shared the printer and gave it a name. THen, I went to my laptop to try to "add a Printer"/ Add a network, wireless, or bluetooth printer. My laptop cannot find the printer. I tried to find it by browsing and then by \\computername\printer name....Nothing.Try to add a printer on the Vista laptop using the IP address of the computer sharing the printer (instead of the computer name). For example, "\\77.10.30.21\SharedPrinterName". 3. Network Configuration. Thank you for diagramming your network configuration. I don't like the configuration I see, but thank you. Unless your router is in "Bridge" mode (and it shouldn't be), I believe your laptop and desktop are on separate networks. The desktop probably has a public IP address (issued by the ISP), the WAN side of your router probably has a public IP address (issued by the ISP), and the laptop probably has a private IP address (issued by DHCP capability of your router or manually set by you). 4. File and printer sharing aside, my goal would be to reconfigure the network to a standard configuration, i.e. all computers on the LAN side of the router via ethernet cables or wireless connection. This places all of your computers on a private network behind the firewall of your router and promotes safer computing. Some ISPs register the MAC address of the first computer used on the account and will not connect to any other MAC. Don't know if that applies here because you seem to be able to access internet from both the desktop and the router. When you first established your service with this ISP, were you using just the desktop directly connected to the modem (USB or ethernet port)? Is your ISP service "cable" or "DSL"? If DSL, do you know if it uses a PPPoE connection? Thank you again for your responses. I really appreciate the help. I tired to add the printer on the vista laptop with "\\IP address\sharedprintername" and got nothing again. Darn! My router isnt in "bridge mode" ...i dont think. I do have the same public IP address though (between my desktop and laptop). Quote 4. File and printer sharing aside, my goal would be to reconfigure the network to a standard configuration, i.e. all computers on the LAN side of the router via ethernet cables or wireless connection. This places all of your computers on a private network behind the firewall of your router and promotes safer computing---------I wish i could set them both up up on the lan side of the router, but because my ethernet card in my computer doesnt seem to be working, I cant. Maybe that is what I should be trying to fix. It hasnt been working since i bought my computer. It just says "limited or no connectivity" WHENEVER I try to connect through it. I tried to bring it back to best buy, but they said they tested it and it works fine. What could I be doing wrong? I tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers for it, but that didnt help. Should I try to restore my computer back to factory settings and just start over? |

Solve : Problem with LAN...? |
|
Answer» Hi! Now we are not paying for it since May and you wonder why nothing is working? Quote from: yoyo876 on June 12, 2008, 10:53:25 AM Now we are not paying for it since May, and I have a LAN connection which a whole buiding is using. That is the whole sentence. I don't know if you misunderstood my post, or just joking but I did point out that I still have an internet connection(which I'm using right now), it's only a different network, and since this change some elements are not working properly. The other users in building have access to these services? You may be blocked by firewall (installed on another equipment, not on your computer). If there is a network administrator (for the whole building), please contact him and ask details.I got a reply from an another forum, that the network has only port 80 open, which only works for web pages. That SEEMS to the problem. I must speak with the administrator, to open different ports. (Which will unfortunately not happen because that building is the embassy where my father is working, and he can't ask to do such things obviously) Anyways, thanks for replying.Quote from: yoyo876 on June 16, 2008, 11:11:42 AM I got a reply from an another forum, that the network has only port 80 open, which only works for web pages. That seems to the problem. I must speak with the administrator, to open different ports. (Which will unfortunately not happen because that building is the embassy where my father is working, and he can't ask to do such things obviously) Most certainly he won't The administrator has to respect some protocols regarding communications and data safety, if he is not instructed by his superiors to open access to some ports, he won't make those modification from his own initiative or other persons with no responsibilities in data security/communications security (or whatever the name of the department). Unless he wants to answer to some difficult questions regarding his duties (and more than that). You made me curious. The network administrator will give you a politically correct response. Just TELL me please what is his answer, it is something that I wish to HEAR (for satisfying my personal curiosities, how would answer an official to such a demand).Quote from: yoyo876 on June 16, 2008, 11:11:42 AM I must speak with the administrator, to open different ports. (Which will unfortunately not happen because that building is the embassy where my father is working, and he can't ask to do such things obviously) I won't ask it, because we do not have the right to do it, for the REASON said above. I myself is curious too, what could he reply to such a request (but I don;t think he would be happy), but we're soon moving, so it would be unecessary to make a risk of asking such a question now. I was thinking that the problem lies in my internet settings, and that I could REPAIR it quckly, and use a (what is for me) a proper internet for my last two weeks here. But everything is more complicated than I thought... |

Solve : Router Set up DSL? |
|
Answer» Hi, i CURRENTLY have AOL broadband connected to my desktop, it GOES Phone socket---------voyager 105adsl modem--------------desktop PC. HOWEVER i have got a laptop which i would also like to USE on the internet, whilst keeping the desktop plugged in via a cable, can someone please tell me the other in which they go like i have on 1st/2nd line? Thankyou Do you intend to use the laptop wirelessly? If so, you will need a wireless router. Either way, you will need a router to split the modem connection between two computers. The setup goes :phone socket---- voyager modem---- router ------computer1, computer2 if it is cabled or the same but the laptop will be wirelessly. The router goes between the modem and the rest of the network, either way. Check with aol for proper router settings and protocols. yes i do intend to use it wirelessly. thankyou for the reply |

Solve : Roommates seem to know what I am looking at.? |
|
Answer» I recently moved into a shared apartment with wireless Internet. Thank you for your reply. hmm, not through the logs, I don't think- you should do a malware scan, if this fellow you know is good enough with computers and enough of a jerk he might have put something on your machine for the *censored* of it. Another possibility is that they are simply recording all the packets and reconsituting all the data. Too me, this seems like an excessive waste of time to see what a roommate has placed in their E-mail, almost prohibitively so. If you can access the router's setup, put a password on temporarily, and then you can demand that they stop their snooping habits or something, or you won't tell them the password. they'll be able to use internet, just not access any logs. That'll bug the heck out of them.I would say they are looking at the logs to see what websites you have accessed. As far as your emails, you should know that all email is sent in "plain text". There is no encryption on it. Since you are on the same network as they are, they COULD use a packet sniffer (a program that sees all the data that is sent in the network) to log what happens on the network. Then they just weed through it to some understandable text (most of it is in hex numbers) and can read your email since it is just plain text and not encrypted. Also, you said you don't think they know your password to login to your pc. Well, I got a surprise for you. There are programs, mainly in Linux, that when inserted into your pc and boot up from it, will find out what your password is. So you're not really safe in your thinking that they wouldn't know your password. If they did find your password, then they could have installed some program on your pc to monitor what you do. Again, we can only take your word for it. You haven't explained to anyone how you know they know what sites you have visited. This could all be in your head. Quote from: brett74 on May 02, 2008, 03:53:18 PM first of all a shared wireless internet connection is just that unless some access to your shared docs on your computer.which should only contain the minimum amount of stuff like pics or documents. I would say they are snooping around on your computer when you are not there is a possibility but I'm not certain. I would also turn of file and printer sharing on your computer i would go through the network wizard to turn it off you should still be able to connect to the internet. If i was your room mate i would run a keylogger. Keyloggers are small programs invisibly installed on a computer that record all keyboard input. Quote If i was your room mate i would run a keylogger. but they pc would have to be unlocked for them to access and read the keylog right? or do they email logs now? all MS Windows are in workgroup MSHOME by default. If you are on the same network, and they are on the MSHOME workgroup, and you have default administrator password blank, or something easy, they can access your entire harddrive. I would change your workgroup to something not default. Quote from: samcarney on July 02, 2008, 12:24:28 AM all MS Windows are in workgroup MSHOME by default. Windows XP Home Edition Uses MSHOME, Windows XP Pro uses WORKGROUP. Chances are XP home is being used here, but I just HAD to point out that not ALL windows use MSHOME Quote but I just HAD to point out that not ALL windows use MSHOMElol darn now everyone knows i dont use vista!! |

Solve : MAC/physical address is all zeros? |

Answer» I just got my new laptop and my physical address is showing all zeros. I went to add it to my MAC address filter on my wireless ROUTER and I couldn't add it due to the blank address. I temporarily disabled the MAC filter and am now able to access the wireless signal after entering the pass key. 1. I went to add it to my MAC address filter on my wireless router and I couldn't add it due to the blank address. I temporarily disabled the MAC filter and am now able to access the wireless signal after entering the pass key.1. MAC address filtering seems like a lot of trouble. Can you use DHCP? 2. If you delete the drivers, Windows will automatically reinstall them upon reboot. 3. Under network adapters, it lists: Atheros AR5895 Wireless Network Adapter - WiFi (Wireless) Broadcom NetLink (TM) Ethernet - Wired Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter - Win7 virtual adapter (I'm not familiar with it) 4. That operation rarely functions. 5. It can't hurt and sometimes does repair them. You're not actually deleting the driver, only the REFERENCE to it. 6. Are you saying it works when wired, but not when wireless? As stated before, you have 2 network cards, wireless & wired. BTW: You can get updated driver for Atheros AR5895 from your computer maker or maybe here: http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-drivers.php1. MAC address is really not much of a bother. I don't know what DHCP is. 2. Do I delete all three? (referencing that which is listed under point #3) 6. My internet works with both wired and wireless. And thanks for responding to my questions Com.Commando!Only the Atheros, the others are working. Get the REPLACEMENT driver 1st, just in case the existing one doesn't work. Is your existing version different? This one is: Version: 9.2.0.104 http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=30&system=1 Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)]The Atheros version I have is 9.2.0.316. Should I just go to the Atheros site and see if I can downoad the same version? No. BTW, what is make & model of laptop? My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5733z-4445. My Toshiba Satellite died after only 2 and half years and I couldn't afford much at this time. It works fine for what I NEED right now. I'm not a gamer so I didn't need the topline processor. It tells me there's no problem with my service, but if that's the case why is it so much slower than it used to be? Does it mean my service itself has been altered for the worse by the provider or something? Quote from: reddevilggg on July 11, 2011, 12:26:42 PM Do you have anything else connected ?? Telephones, TV, other PCs ?? Have you tried disconnecting everything but the Hub and doing a re-test. Are all the micro-filter connected securely ??There is a telephone downstairs. I'll disconnect it and try a retest when I get chance later on. I'll check on the filters too and report back. The filter need to be on EVERY telephone. But i'm beginning to think its a BT problem. Do you know your Download load usage? BT has been known to THROTTLE heavy users.I have attached a program I use to diag other networks at work. If it is not there let me know and I will find another way to get the file to you. You will then need to attach the reg.txt. [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Quote from: reddevilggg on July 12, 2011, 05:29:43 AM The filter need to be on EVERY telephone. I've been in touch with BT. They said to take off the bottom of the BT box that's attached to the wall, and try using the engineers test port. Also said to try new filter. Tried these things and still have very low speed. Is there perchance a filter between the wall jack and the modem. If so remove it and try the connection most modems come with a filter built in and do not need on there. If there is a PHONE coming off the modem remove the filter from there. You proply answered this earlier and I may be missing it... 1. Have you tried rebooting the modem? 2. Seeing if connecting a cable to the laptop and turn off the wifi if the speed improves? 3. If there are other computers are they showing the same speeds? How do they connect? Thank you all for your suggestions. I installed new filters and a brand new BT home hub I got from a mate, still got slow speed. I contacted BT and ASSURED them I'd done everything I could at my end. They said their network engineers would look into it. It worked! Within about four hours my speed had gone from 320Kbps to 1700Kbps! Depending on usage my average speed now fluctuates between 1200kbps and 1700kbps. It was BT's line that was at fault after all. But credit to them, they got it sorted quickly and without charge. Thanks again for your help, I'll always come back to this forum for my computer advice. I have used BT as an ISP before and although a little more expensive than others their customer service is second to none, but in saying that, i'm now with TalkTalk and never had a problem, they've even given me half price for 6 months for being a loyal customer. You dont get that very often. Glad you got it sorted. |

Answer» I am looking for an Ethernet version of a KVM switch. I don't KNOW if there is such device and if there is, what it's called. The is going to be rather direct and blunt. Here on this forum they take a very dim view of spam or any other attempt to promote a product by using this form. There's absolutely no problem responding to a post like this with the name / brand of a specific product. We do it all the time with software (ie, imaging, partitioning, and defrag utilities).Oh, no, I am in hot water again! All right, the company is in Pittsburgh. Market Central, Inc. Below is a very positive review of their product with contact information. http://www.niap-ccevs.org/st/vid1002/No hot water . In fact, we appreciate your concern for the rules. |

Solve : Laptop's wireless adapter resets every few minutes. - Thinkpad SL410? |
|
Answer» I have had this laptop for 7 months, and ever since 2 weeks after I got it, no matter what wireless network I am connected to, the wireless adapter shuts off after a few minutes of internet use (a red X over the wireless icon in the notification area). It stays disconnected for 10 seconds or so, and then turns back on. 3 or so minutes later it goes off again. It's not so bad if I set it to connect automatically to a certain wireless network, because all I have to do is refresh my web pages, but I would STILL like to take care of this HICCUP in my system once and for all. Well, after all that, it didn't solve the problem. Unfortunately, the computer was stolen, so now I guess someone else will have the problem to deal with. That was an ingenious way to deal with the problem, how did you come up with it? Seriously though, did you have insurance? |

Answer» have an Acer laptop and have a hard time staying connected to my wireless CONNECTION in my garage. 30 feet away from linksys router. can not connect at all if garage door is down. any ideas any input would be greatly apprecatedWhat other wireless devices do you have NEARBY? Also make sure your wireless network is secure, if other people in the neighborhood are using it, the strength of your signal will diminish.Pure Rubbish.Yeh your garage must be blocking the signal out, which doesn't suprise me if it's made out of the same stuff ours is ... If you use your laptop in your garage a lot it may be worth looking at getting a Wireless Access Point / Signal Booster / Repeater that is positioned closer to the garage to boost the signal. Before you go out and buy something to boost the signal, just try moving your Router to where you would put whatever hardware you would be buying and see if you can get a signal in your garage then, if you can get a signal then an access point should definately work, if you can't get a signal then you may need to think about a potential wired solution. |

Solve : Vista Admin Issues? |

Answer» So I got a new device to hook up to my home network and need to enter my WEP key. I misplaced the paper I wrote it down on, it's not written on the modem, all those simple little things I've tried. However, I think I found a way to do it but I need a little help. So on my LAPTOP (which is already on my home network) I went to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Wireless NETWORKS. I then right CLICK my network and click properties. After that I go to my security tab and see the WEP key.. except it's encoded with those stupid BLACK dots and I can't see what it is. There is a button called "Show Characters" but I am not able to click it. I figured it WOULD have something to do with not being an administrator.. except I have the only account on my laptop and I am an administrator. So if someone could either tell me how to fix this or another way of obtaining my WEP key short of calling Verizon, I would greatly appreciate it.Try this tool: |

Solve : I need to set up a wireless network.? |
|
Answer» Alright, so I live and rent out of someone else's house. How can I set up a WIRELESS network and is it possible to do so and not interfere with their internet, which they've specified I'm not to use? You'll need an internet connection via Cable/DSL to set up a wireless network. Then you can set up a wireless router.Quote from: unsustainable on October 12, 2010, 11:24:20 PM ..and not interfere with their internet, which they've specified I'm not to use?You will need to contact the local ISP and arrange to get your own connection.I'd say it would be better to buy a wireless router and setup a network using one connection. Today's router aren't difficult to setup, just as long as you can establish a connection you're good to go. Once you have that done, setup a share key to protect your network from unwanted leechers. Share that key with your tenant(s). There should be no degradation with your signal, pending number of people living in household that uses the Internet. I myself have 2 tenants living in our basement, plus my sister staying with me for school, and our signal has been fine. I use torrents alot and haven't had a complaint yet. HOWEVER, if you're afraid of connectivity degradation, you can block keywords with your routers to prevents excessive downloading. Since the OP hasn't responded we will have to wait and see.Quote from: unsustainable on October 12, 2010, 11:24:20 PM Alright, so I live and rent out of someone else's house. How can I set up a wireless network and is it possible to do so and not interfere with their internet, which they've specified I'm not to use?The landlord's attitude about this is unfortunate and unreasonable. Do they expect you to have a second phone line or cable line installed? Would they allow that? I suspect not, so how do they expect you to get Internet access? As hedgehog88 said, sharing an Internet connection should not be a problem. Does the landlord use a router? Perhaps you could offer to pay $10-$15 extra PER month in rent to persuade them to let you share their Internet connection or, if they have no router, offer to buy the router and set it up.Hi Everyone! I just want to know what the best wifi router? I'm planning to buy one but don't know which one to pick. Thanks. Quote from: actionfigure412 on November 03, 2010, 01:58:18 AM Hi Everyone! I just want to know what the best wifi router? I'm planning to buy one but don't know which one to pick. Thanks. You need to start your own thread to get support. If possible, you can try to manage others to share a common wireless network with you. But frankly speaking, I don't LIKE wireless network, it always works badly. |

Solve : Winter Project: Server? |
|
Answer» Hey, Well at the moment I have a Dell Optiplex gx280. It has a Pentium 4 with windows xp on it with what i believe is a 512MB stick of ram. Software wise I can go either way. I myself am more familiar with windows but this project is meant to be a learning experience for me so I am more than willing to try whatever software you recommend. The budget is preferably around 200 dollars but my max is 300. Like I said tho I know very little about servers and networking so just giving your fair warning I may ask a lot of questions that you might find stupid or a no brain-er. ha ha I appreciate any help you can give me tho. With that budget you're probably going to have to go down the *nix route, as Windows Server isn't cheap to buy.Quote from: SilentAssasin64 on October 29, 2010, 12:55:55 AM I like your enthusiasm. One of the great things about running Linux on a home server is it can fit well withing any budget you have. I just transitioned away from Ubuntu, which is what I did the vast majority of my early learning on, so I would recommend that. Very easy to get a good, solid server up and running while still learning a lot in the process. I will forewarn you, though. The learning curve of *nix is very, very steep if you have an all Windows background. However, with that said, I'll be more than happy to help where I can. Just gotta keep an open mind and keep moving forward. Well, I'd love to set up a HTPC but i find it a little useless since I don't have any HDTV in my house yet, so a file server would be a lot more use full to me. What software do you recommend?I personally prefer using FTP when doing a home server. Others like Samba, though. More of a personal PREFERENCE. I find FTP easier to setup, manage, and more compatible with various settings. For this I would go the route of Ubuntu (or any distro of your choice) with VSFTPD, simple to setup and get going and very stable. If it's for a learning experience I would try every server software I COULD find. Linux would be a good start since it's mostly free. That will help you get used to using the command prompt if you are mostly used to Windows. I've seen some older Windows server software on Bay for $100 or so (buyer beware). Unix won't be going away anytime soon. Once you get comfortable with the command prompt, going from one OS to another isn't that hard.Quote from: rthompson80819 on October 31, 2010, 09:05:53 PM If it's for a learning experience I would try every server software I could find. Linux would be a good start since it's mostly free. That will help you get used to using the command prompt if you are mostly used to Windows. Agree 100%. I've gotten so used to the *nix CLI that I install Cygwin on every Windows install I use personally. On topic, though. The best way to learn about stuff like this is by getting your hands dirty with it. As mentioned earlier, I'll be more than happy to help out where I can.Quote so a file server would be a lot more use full to me. What software do you recommend? FreeNAS. It's the easiest way to make a simple file server and it only uses about 20MB of space to install. It has CIFS (Samba), FTP, NFS, HTTP, BitTorrent, and a few more I can't remember. It also has JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 5 so if you have a lot of extra hdds, you can setup a RAID system without having a RAID card. The only downside to using it is it's so easy to setup, you probably won't learn much. |

Solve : Adding WiFi to LAN drops connection? |
|
Answer» Sup guys. Tryin to figure out this mindbender. So heres the inital config before we get into details Situation 1: Is DHCP enabled on the modem or switch? If not, nothing would get an address automatically in situation 2 anyway. Also with static addresses you'd probably need to setup static routes as well.DHCP is enabled on the modem/routers i have configured. The switch isnt configurable. Its a "plug and play" sorta switch. I just plug a cable into it and its auto configured. It has no addresses of its own or any configuration options. Here is a picture I created visually describing how my network is set up. Ill be looking into both the 2Wire and the Linksys modems and see if any settings are what they shouldnt be. Until then, hopefully we can figure out whats up. Dont be scared to get into depth about what I need to do. Im no pro at networking but I know my way around. 2 years of Cisco have branded my brain with at least some knowledge lol. [recovering disk space - old ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]I suspect it's the hardware firewall built in to the 2-Wire. You may have to expand it's range of allowed IP addresses. The forum isnt letting me post 2 gif images of my 2wire and Linksys configurations to see if you could possibly see if something is not configured right. The 2Wire only is connected to the Linksys router and the firewall built into the 2Wire modem has DMZ plus enabled. Meaning "All inbound traffic, except traffic which has been specifically assigned to another computer using the “Allow individual applications” feature, will automatically be directed to this computer. The DMZplus-enabled computer is less secure because all unassigned firewall ports are opened for that computer." Now once again im trying to figure out why when my laptop connects wirelessly, all goes well, but when I turn the wireless switch back off on my laptop and reconnect my ethernet cable, the connection throughout the network is disrupted, forcing me to restart both the Linksys and 2wire modem. Why would that simple revert of connnection type do that? Upon asking, I can provide anyone with type of configs for both the 2wire and Linksys. It wont let me post pictures so Ill end up typing it out. Between my previous post and this one, I switched both configs to their default IP addressing ranges 2Wire is 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 Linksys is 192.168.2.1/255.255.255.0 (default was same of 2Wire so I increased it one range of addresses to prevent DNS issuesRemove the Linksys & see if the issues go away. Or turn off the 2Wire wireless feature You still have a DNS conflict somewhere. http://support.2wire.com/?page=view&article=60I disabled the wireless feature on it when I originally bought the Linksys receiver. As I mentioned before, I only connect through the Linksys router due to its higher speed output (54mbps over 802.11N compared to the 2Wire's 11mbps over a 802.11B, i think). Both are DHCP enabled. I tried at one point to use static addressing but it still showed issues when connecting wirelessly and so on.Quote from: Poissionnariat on October 31, 2010, 12:11:22 AM Both are DHCP enabled. That's bad. Disable it on one of the devices. Let me understand this correctly, you'll only using the Linksys as a Wireless Access Point (WAP), right? If that's the case, I'd be tempted to take it out-of-line (if you have a spare switch port) and let the 2Wire do the routing, firewalling & DHCP, and disable all the un-required features of the Linksys. So it would go something like attached. [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin] |

Solve : Picky wireless? |

Answer» I just got an Acer Aspire 5553G laptop and I've been getting weak signals in rooms away from where the router is. My old four year old COMPUTER works just fine but this brand new one SEEMS to not do so well. I'm running a shared WEP encryption connection and the router is a Netgear. As for some specs: I've been getting weak signals in rooms Some Wireless Standards can get obstructed(walls) and interference from APPLIANCES that have signal frequencies. The weaker the signal RANGE your WLAN is capable, the harder it tends to receive. Finding the right spot away from this signals will help you maximize your wi-fi connection.Hi, I had the same PROBLEM with an Acer laptop. The signal showing on it was weaker than a desktop pc when placed side by side. I installed bigger aerials on my linksys router but didnt help much. My solution was to hard wire another router closer to where the laptop was used. The second router was configured as an access point, and I now have full strength showing on both laptop and pc. The only downside to this is connecting the 2 routers by ethernet cable, you may or may not be able to easily do that? |

Solve : XP SP3 wireless network and firewall not working? |
|
Answer» I have a Dell Dimension 3000 desktop. I am connecting to the internet via a USB Netopia wireless card. 802.11g the device MANAGER says it is working properly. About a week AGO both my internet and windows firewall stopped working. I did various resets of both the network, and the firewall. I tried to reinstall both of them but to no avail. I am noticing that there are several critical services that will not start with the Windows ICS being one of them. All of the appropriate files they refer to seem to be in order. I ran sfc /scannow and nothing was reported. The AT&T U-verse modem was reset as well. At this point I am completely stumped. Oh I forgot to mention, I had several pieces of spyware that CAME up during many of the safe mode scans I ran as well. Now After running hijack this and combofix I was told there is nothing visibly infecting the computer. Any ideas? |
