Solve : MFP Server setup to WRT54GL Router problem?

Answer»

All right, I have old HP Deskjet 812C USB printer that I want to connect to LevelOne WUS-3200 USB/MFP Server with an ethernet port, which is then connected to a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless router. I have the drivers for the printer and I can install them so that the Print Server can recognize the printer but before I can do that I have to make my Router recognize the Print Server. But apparently my router doesn't recognize the Print Server. The LAN light on the printer server comes one for a few seconds when I first connect the power (while connected to the router as well) but then it disappears. Now the manual included with Print Server states that for Wired CONNECTION I SIMPLY have to connect an Ethernet cable from the Print Server ethernet port to the Router's ethernet port and everything will be fine. But this is not the case, if any one could assist me on this matter it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.Quote from: Ironman on September 12, 2010, 09:01:20 PM

Hi, Ive been through a similar bunfight trying to connect a HP USB MFP to my network (with the same router as yours). I am not an expert by any means but I suggest you try and make your server visible to the network.

I would reset the server to factory.
If you dont know its default IP, then use a prog such as lan scanner to find it.
Log on to the unit and make SURE its set to static IP, and that its subnet and IP is within your network range.
Does your print server need software to connect it, mine does.
hope this is some help? Sorry for replying so late, but can you please clarify on the steps to access the printer server? Should I attempt to connect it to my router and then try entering in the factory IP address in a internet browser or should I use a different method? Once again I apologize for replying so late.Hi, what you have to do is find the ip address for the server, I use lan scanner for my network. When you have the ip adress enter the servers config and set the ip address to a static one within your routers network range. I access my usb server from a browser but I have a media player which I have to access through a command prompt. Try the browser first.

This is a link to a manual for it

Solve : Internet Upload Speed?

I hate google.

That's your right. But don't whine like a girl when you can't find things.

If you include the word "internet" or "broadband" in that SEARCH, it doesn't come up...

... and your point is?

Poor wording, "I hate Google at times." there Fixed.

My point is that why would including a word of reference e.g. internet or broadband (so the search engine looks for webpages relating to broadband or the internet) prevent pages pertaining to upload speeds for the internet?Quote from: Accessless on November 09, 2010, 08:57:00 AM
My point is that why would including a word of reference e.g. internet or broadband (so the search engine looks for webpages relating to broadband or the internet) prevent pages pertaining to upload speeds for the internet?

It doesn't "prevent" them. It just puts them further down the LIST of results. If you have Google's default of 10 results to a page you may not even see the ones you want.

If you type in "broadband" and "internet", the search engine doesn't LOOK for pages "relating to" broadband or the internet, it isn't that smart. It looks for pages containing those words. If you want to know about Virginmedia upload and download speeds, typing "Virginmedia upload download speeds" will ensure that pages containing all four of those words are ranked at the top of your results. If you put in other words you are widening the search unnecessarily.

Solve : remote pc control?

Answer»

Hi, I have a mixture of PCs on my network which works fine. What I propose to do is to use a xp home sp3 laptop to control a windows 7 home premium computer. The laptop will WORK through a wireless access point to the wired network, and only 1 win 7 machine is required to be accessed remotely. I do not wish to access the win 7 pc any other way than through my home network, that is no internet remote control needed. Whats the way to go? Thankshttp://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/Hi, Dont want to share files, can already do that. I want to control a win 7 homep pc from a xp laptop. I downloaded teamviewer and even though its a bit hard on the eyes on the laptop, it works great. Solve : Computer shuts down when I use a wireless connection?

Answer»

HI!! I have a problem with my computer and its wireless connection, everytime I activate the wireless connection my computer freezes and I have to RESTART it manually so it will work again
I thought it was a problem with my hard disk space so i clear it so i have now 30.9GB available but the problem its still there
I also check the Wireless network adapter which is a Atheros AR5B91 but it says that its working correctly so i dont know what to do
here are some specifications about my computer
Acer Aspire 5535
AMD athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor QL-60
RAM 2 GB
OS: 32 bits
Windows Vista Home premium
I also did the system evaluation THING and it gave me a 3.7 with this characteristics:
Processor 4.7
RAM 5.5
Graphics: 3.9
3D graphics 3.7
HDD 5.5
average score 3.7
Please SPECIFY what routers/brand/model/firmware version are you connecting or trying to access. Firewall/s use or abled/disabled. Was it also working properly before? Do these happen to other wi-fi connection you are into?

Solve : wifi too far away?

Answer»

I live and work at a car dealership that has wifi ACCESS. I can access it when I am either inside the building or right outside of it but not from where my house is on the lot. Is there any way to make the wifi SIGNAL stronger so it will reach that far (I was told that if I moved 20 or 30 feet closer it would work)? Can you run a cable?
Run a length of cable AROUND the obstacles with a wireless device on the end of the cable. Like maybe a used or cheap wireless router. We do things like that in our home network. Got three families on ONE internet connection. We have 300 feet of CAT b5 cable and three different wireless ROUTERS. Works most of the time.
A Range Booster can also help

Solve : Does anyone know how to set up an ESSID??

Answer»

I'm trying to set up a wireless network with about 4 routers, so that all use the same SSID name. I understand from theory that it can be do done through an extended SSID (ESSID) with roaming capabilities. Can anyone advise how this can be done?
It seems to be a very difficult task because not many ppl know how to do it.. yet it seems RELATIVELY simple.

Much THANKS for any advice.First, let me ask you this: have you already searched the FORUM for posts related to this topic? Several questions regarding the wireless SSID have been posted here.
Also, what routers are you USING? And do you have devices that can be used as as access points?
As you have mentioned, it is difficult to find information about this topic because most of the stuff being sold as a for home use is seldom used in that configuration. You need to look into the documentation for the routers and access points that you want to use.

Solve : Laptop can't connect to AT&T Uverse Wireless?

Answer»

Computer is Dell inspiron 14 with windows 7 and what I assume would be standard features (of interest, Dell 1397 Wireless G Mini-Card, according to Dell's website). Just moved in to a new place which has AT&T Uverse wireless internet and the computer will not connect to the internet.

Normally, when using the automatic internet connection, after selecting a network a window pops up in the bottom right hand CORNER of the screen stating 'Connecting to internet...' and then will be replaced by a window asking for a security key.

When trying to connect to this network, it says 'Getting information from 2WIRE315' followed by a message saying 'Windows was unable to connect to the network'. Normally when there are problems it will OFFER to run a troubleshooting program but it does not offer it in this case.

Security encryption is WEP. I thought this might be the issue SINCE all the wireless I had used in the past were WPA2 encrypted (and they worked fine). However, my computer is picking up weak signals from other WEP encrypted networks and when I ask to connect to those they ask for a security key, seeming to indicate that my computer can connect with WEP networks. I tried manually connecting to the network specifying that it was WEP and that didn't work.

I know that the wireless device is working because I am using it to write this on my friend's laptop (which runs Vista), and I am getting the wireless on my Blackberry (just connected it to the Uverse wireless today, so I know I have the right password).

Anyone seen something like this before / know how to fix it?Quote from: BigSteezy on November 05, 2010, 11:10:59 AM

2WIRE315 must be configured to ALLOW access to your Dell inspiron 14.hmm must have made a mistake on the encryption type, it was WPA2 and once I tried to manually connect to it under that designation it worked fine... I'm an IDIOT.

Solve : Tp link WiFi refuses to coey connection that lasts no more than operate?

Answer»

Ok, so I recently moved into an apartment in Thailand and the building only offers WiFi for internet service. No problem, I just buy a cheap wireless adapter and get online, right? well, I got online, on a totally shaky connection that last for no more than ten minutes at a time, effectively making and downloads such as windows update or steam games impossible. Basic browsing is awful as well. I bought a TP LINK model TL-WN353GD and ran the compatible drivers for windows 7. Poor signal, right? Well, thing is, my girlfriends laptop runs perfectly even sitting right next to the antenna for my card, no connection or slowdown problems whatsoever. My questions is, is this card garbage or am I doing something wrong? As always, all help is awesome and appreciated.

Here are my specs:

Solve : lost contact?

Answer»

Hello
I have a laptop CONNECTED to the Internet via a wireless router
And the same router connected by cable with another desktop computer
Desktop computer connects to the Internet well. After a period - random - lost contact
( Connection limited or impossible )
If restart PC and router .network Icon say that the network cable is unplugged

At the same time. No PROBLEM for laptop ( wireless )Is it on-board ethernet or an expansion card? On-board tends to have problems after a while.expansion cardI'm waiting

try a firmware update from the manufacturer's web site.I tried - the result zeroMight be a fault in the cable. Have you tried REPLACING it? It could be the router. Have you tried switching ports on the router? If you have one available to you, you can also try a different router and see if that solves the problem.

Also, most routers have a light of some sort when a cable is plugged into it. If the light is on and not blinking, it's connected with no activity. If it's blinking, it's connected and it has activity. If it remains off, there is no connection.quaxo thank u

When the problem exists.the light is on and not blinkingYeah, a different computer with the same problem on the same cable would most likely indicate it is either the cable or the router. If the other computer works fine this way, there is most likely an ISSUE with the computer you're on. It will give us somewhere to start anyway.

Don't forget to just try changing the cable, that might solve your issue without a lot of other fuss. The problem is ended after updating the network cardGood to hear that you got it solved.

Solve : Is my connection safe???

Answer»

I don't recall ever having noticed this until maybe about two weeks ago. When I start my laptop, it automatically connects to the Internet. However, I have now noticed that my connection is "unsecure." I read the little bit of info under the connection's name and it says that since it's unsecure, info I send may be viewable to others. What do I do now?? Can people see my passwords to MySpace, facebook, etc.?

Any help is appreciated! Thank you!I doubt anyone can see your passwords or anything LIKE that.

Your ISP might be updating their hardware or something like that... Would uploads really take that long? It's like that every time it connects. I mean, it may have always said unsecure and I just never noticed. I'm not sure.

Thank you for the quick response! If you right click on your conection icon in the lower right of the taskbar, then 'view available networks, does it say anything there about security??It does, but I can't connect to the secure ones because they need a network KEY, and I don't have anything to put in.Well you need to connect to your router and put a password on it.

Because it is under secured, it means anyone can connect to it, so other people could be using your wireless connection to access the internet.

Do you know how to connect to your router???
What router do you have???I have no idea. I use a laptop that is connected to the family computer downstairs. My mom is the one who did EVERYTHING with our router and Internet set-up and whatnot, so I don't know any of it. I wouldn't be too concerned about outsiders "borrowing" our Internet, so long as they can't see anything we can see, i.e. passwords, BANK info, etc.Quote from: emtklf on October 05, 2008, 06:50:16 PM

If anybody is using your connection, they will slow down yours, as well. Bearing in mind they aren't paying for it at all, that seems a bit unjust.Well, yes, that I would hope would be the worst of it. I just thought people may be able to see what we're doing online, since it says the unsecure connection would "allow info to be viewable by others."It just means that the data is being sent over the air unencrypted. What exactly does that mean? I hear that term often but I'm not sure what it is.anybody who REALLY wanted to could filter out your traffic from the air, log it, at some point later try to parse the data (trying to remove interference) and then try to make sense of the data stream.

personally- if anybody was going to go to such trouble, they would probably go after somebody really rich.

Also- banks, and other sensitive information IS encrypted via https, it just isn't encrypted by the router- hard to EXPLAIN...

Solve : Laptop Wireless issues?

Answer»

My laptop cannot connect to the internet, let me tell you what I have tried and then you can tell me I'm stupid and tell me what I should have tried. The switch is turned on, my computer says my drivers are working PROPERLY. I have tried to reset my IP address and everytime I type ipconfig /release it says the requested operation requires evaluation. I have reset my modem, router, called my cable company. My laptop works when plugged into my router via Ethernet cable. My girlfriends computer can hook up to my wireless along with my ps3 and x360. I have taken my computer to my college where there is open wifi just to make sure, no connection.

Now there is one thing that might be the cause. A few days ago my wireless was acting up, they were doing some unscheduled maintenance. I plugged my computer up directly to my modem, not my router. It was having some issues connecting, then my computer asked me to ok something and I did, but I don't remember what. It was able to connect after that. I am thinking whatever I oked is what changed a setting to my computer where it wont pick up any wireless internet connection. I am running windows vista, if you need any computer specs past that your going to have to tell me what you need and how I retrieve them. Thank you very much for your time.Look in Network Settings in control panel and CHOOSE the wireless connection. It is not showing any wireless networks in the area.Does it show any information under the wireless connection. Mine states to use the program that manages my wireless.

Check to make sure the wireless is not didabled check both the program that runs the wireless and the device manager.

When mine has not been able to find wireless signal I just disable then renable and for some reason it picks it up.No it doesn't list anything, tried restarting my drivers as WELL as USING dell system restore, last thing I have that I have not tried is using a backup disc but I havn't made one for several months so I am going to lose quite a bit of information. It seems your hardware is not picking up any wireless signal although it is working for ethernet. Try to reload your driver for your wireless hardware. If this fails, its time to bring it to your local shop.I'm having similar problem. How do I do disable and re enable it? what are the steps? Thanks in advance for your help.

Maybe a FN key press or a switch on the side of the laptop somewhere?

Sounds like a hardware issue to me if you've taken it somewhere else and still can't find connections. If when you tried to do the ipconfig/release and appeared that it require elevation, it means that you shoud run as administrator, i dont know what kind of operating system you have, try this instead ipconfig/release, try netsh winsock reset and then restart your computer
Let me know if that it worked!

Solve : Laptop stopped connecting to home wireless network after a visit to wifi spot?

Answer» HI,

Tuesday my laptop was connecting fine to my home wireless network. Went out and connected to a coffee shop with no problems. Later that night at home I tried to get back on and can not.

I have a Lenovo with Windows 7, using Chrome for my browser. Talked to ATT U-verse for an hour and they could not help after several attempts. I have had my router reset. went into cmd and checked my ip address. My control panel shows that EVERYTHING is connected and active but the internet will not load.

I ALSO have McAfee that is CONTROLLING my firewall and for some reason I can not change the settings.

Any further ideas or suggestions?

Change the order of preferred networks? Maybe your laptop is still looking the coffee shop connection? Sorry I'm not familiar with Windows 7.You have a network icon in the lower right corner of your screen. Right? Do it have a red X on it? You should be able to click on it (might be right click) and view the available CONNECTIONS. What do you see there?Hi
1.- Go to control panel, network and sharing center, and then on youir left press Manage wireless networks, then on the open window youll see the option Manage wireless networks that use
Below youll see Networks you can view, modify and reorder,
select all of them and one by one remove them.
2.- On the right hand near the time, press on the computer icon and then you will see the networks near you, find your network, click on it and connect, add your security key and then connect, be sure that the on/off button wireless option is on the mode on,
If that doesnt work, let me know, and i will try to give you further assistance....

Let me know if i helped u, ok? it worked to me!!!

Solve : How to display wireless connection speed in Vista??

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if it was possible to have the wireless connection icon in the corner of the screen next to the clock display the actual connection speed in Vista Home 32 BIT like it does in XP?

I don't know why Microsoft thought it was NECESSARY to not include that feature for Vista, pretty ridiculous. So what is your question?
You want to selectively take some features of XP and put them in Vista? And you wonder why Microsoft did not make it easy for everybody to change every visible detail on the desktop?
Are you saying that monitoring the actual speed while you use the computer is a need you have? How does it benefit you?
Hey! just now noticed that my wireless speed is down. Odd, but I do not feel any compulsion to find bout why. It that ridicules?

Question: Suppose such a bit of software was available that would display connection speed on the task bar. Would you pat a moderate price for it? Or would the inclusion of such influence yo our next purchase? If enough people agree with you, I am going to start a new company that caters to their needs. What do you care on why it is a need for me? I came on here and posted a simple question and you write this nasty response back? Are you kidding me pfft.My APOLOGY. It was not my intent to be nasty.
If there is a need for this I would like to know. I use XP, but the thing is so small that I hardly notice it.An it only shows the speed when I pit the mouse over it. It shows speed of 54 Mbps. But does not show my current Internet speed.NP my apology too.

The reason for me wanting it is because I do alot of LAN parties here at my house where I have friends bring over their PC's. I noticed sometimes my Linksys router kicked off a signal of 130mbps and other times 160mbps. But anyway most of the games we play now are DirectX 10 games so we switched over to Vista hense I no longer can see the speed.OK. Got it. Now it makes sense.
So at your LAN parties you are NOT using the internet?

The router is dropping some connections. Speed seems to be the factor that predicts dropout. Sounds reasonable.
But Vista makes if very hard to monitor speed, using the 'zero configuration' method.

Let me give that some though. How many laptops at the party? All in the same room? How big is the room? Everybody has Vista. You can not use Ethernet cable?

Solve : Wireless setup.. network bridge confusion?

Answer»

I really appeciate any help with this..

I have my main computer (Vista) set up with a new AT&T DSL modem. I have
Netgear WGT624 wireless set up for the 2nd computer and for wifi throughout the house.

For some reason my computer is connecting through the wireless connection.
(which wouldnt be needed am I right?)
I know it's how I setup the network bridge.. I have no idea what Im doing there.
I fooled around with it and then my husband lost his wifi connection.

So now we are both connected but bothing using wifi on the two computers.

Quote

For some reason my computer is connecting through the wireless connection.
Is it a desktop? We used to have a Desktop computer RUNNING downstairs and is connected wired(LAN) and at the same time via wifi by a modem and wireless router because of an added wireless card installed,configured/enabled. Hi JASON

thanks for responding

Yes, the two computers are both desktops.
I'd like for this one to not hook up with the wifi signal,
and just go thru the wired route.. that WAY it
doesnt take away the bandwidth of the signal..

but I dont understand how to do that

thanks in advance.Quote from: SuzanneTexas on January 20, 2011, 09:19:50 PM

OK, then just connect a cable to it.

I think that's not a significant issue. You'll probably notice no DIFFERENCE whether both computers are using a wireless connection or one is wired and one wireless. Quote
I'd like for this one to not hook up with the wifi signal,
Since you mention it was a desktop connecting at the same time on your router(wired, wireless)probably by an added wireless card, could you confirm this by looking at the notification bar/area for the status of these connections? If given you are both connected at the same time which is possible on a desktop and wants to be sure that there is no loss bandwith under this condition, run a speedtest by:
1. Remove LAN(wired) connection and used the wifi signal via the wireless card installed and run the speedtest and then check upload, download speed.
2. Connect the LAN connection and run both signals then run another speedtest, compare...
3. Then lastly, disable wireless card then used alone the LAN connection and run the speedtest and check the difference and look for any discrepancy while another machine is connected and using the bandwith by running ALSO a speedtest on this 3 conditions.

Solve : choosing an n-speed wireless router?

Answer»

I want to buy a n-speed wireless router to replace my current D-Link G-speed router, and I'm wondering what I should be looking for (if anything). I was looking at bestbuy and they have on sale a belkin, a netgear, and a linksys, for $49, $59,and $69, respectively. I can't tell what the real difference is. Should I just get the CHEAPEST one, or are there other factors LIKE power and reception?

I want to get a new dvd player that can stream netflix movies, and I think I need n-speed. I also often get to work at home doing web and design work for a tradeshow displays website and it takes a lot of online time... it would be nice to be able to get a good signal in my backyard, if you get my drift... (it's hit or miss right now).

So are all n-speed wireless routers basically the same, or is there anything I should look for?

Thanks in advance!A wireless-N router will give you a lot better range than your current wireless-G.

It will also PROVIDE you with much higher speeds, my netgear claims up to 280Mbps, so ideal for streaming as you stated above.

I'd go for a Netgear wireless-N myself. The range you are probably looking at will have around 8 antennas GIVING good speed, reliablility and range. The wireless-N I have is at the back of the house and I can use my laptop to go on the internet sitting out front in my car (so the range of your avergae size house and front garden between the two)Quote from: kurmudgeon on January 19, 2011, 12:39:06 PM

I swear by Linksys. I enjoy the ease of installs for it. I just setup a wireless N network in my parents home and laughed at how easy it was compared to doing the same thing 2 or 3 years ago.

Solve : Weak Router Signal?

Answer»

I believe I need a stronger router or a range booster. My husband moved his computer to his shop right behind our house and now the router continually drops the connection. Will the DESK top adapter (D-Link) work with any brand router? Most wireless 802.11g devices made recently should be compatible. You can use ANOTHER D-Link router as a relay or boaster

Using a direct wire is preferred if there is metal and concrete in the WAY. You can pus a cable through a small opening .

But the use a another router requires less physical work. More mental work.Thanks. I just purchased a stronger router and it's WORKING! Yeah!!!

Solve : Root certificate installation?

Answer»

Hello!

I got some problem installing a root certificate in Vista. What I did so far: using the management cosole I imported the certificate on the local machine. After that it says "successful" but doesn't warn me and show the certificate's fingerprint. After the "successful" import I can see the certificate in the list. But IE still can't access it.

This idea didn't help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932156/

I appreciate your support!Have you found the quote below EDS not apply to you? Or it did not solve the problem?
Quote

This problem occurs if you do not have Read permissions for the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\Root\ProtectedRoots
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

* You used an unattended setup process to install Windows Vista.
* The unattended answer file (Autounattend.xml) includes the following tag:
<CopyProfile>true</CopyProfile>
* The operating system image was resealed by using the sysprep generalize command.

In this scenario, the user who RUNS the Out Of BOX Experience (OOBE) Wizard is not assigned Read permissions for the ProtectedRoots registry key. Instead, the Administrator account is assigned Read permissions for this key. However, the certificate information that is displayed in Internet Explorer 7 or in Certificate MANAGER is stored in the ProtectedRoots registry key. Therefore, the user who is currently logged on to the computer cannot view the certificate information.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942543/
It didn't WORK for me. I tried, but didn't help.

As I do not get a warning when importing the certificate (just the "successful" note), I think the problem is to be found at this point.

Appreciate your help!

Solve : Network Book?

Answer»

Hello:

Can you suggest a good book to learn networking? I may or may not want to take the Comptia NETWORK exam so I'm not so much looking for a STUDY guide as I am a good beginner networking book.

Thanks. There are many books out there. Some focus on communication protocols. I liked the Network+ book which is a study guide for comptia Network+ Cert, but it might be more INFO than you ever wanted to know and dry..lol There are a bunch of college level workbooks out there for Intro to Networking which have labs, such as my Intro to Networking by Mcgraw Hill. You could do the Peer-to-Peer labs in your home if you have more than one computer or want to play with virtual systems. If you want to create a cheap network with servers, I'd check into Linux OS such as Ubuntu Server etc. You can also load VMware environment on your system and have a bunch of fake virtual servers and run it all on one well spec'd system if you dont have multiple systems to install OS to to simulate networks and play around to get hands on training which is I feel better than book training, because hands on you learn more on how to apply the KNOWLEDGE. I say check out a book store and flip through what they have. You know what you want pretty much. There are also tons of FREE online books and sites.I always find the "for dummies" range really good to get a basic foundation on, and then move on to THINGS like study guides or O'Reilly books.

Solve : Dual NIC Dynamic/Static Internet issue?

Answer»

Trying to figure out an issue with a Windows XP Pro SP3 system I have with Dual NICs. Problem is that if the 2nd NIC is enabled with local static IP, my browser is then unable to surf the internet. Its almost like the browser IE is trying to go through the 2nd NIC which has no gateway and no DNS. Do I REALLY need to specify for IE to use NIC 1 instead of NIC 2? I thought by default it should stick with the only gateway and DNS available?

Config is TCP/IP Dynamic IP/Subnet/Gateway/DNS for NIC 1
IP=192.168.1.3
SUBNET: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Primary DNS: 68.x.x.x ( from isp )
Secondary DNS: 68.x.x.x ( from isp )

Config is TCP/IP Static IP/Subnet/No Gateway / No DNS for NIC 2
IP= 192.168.100.2
SUBNET: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: None configured
Primary DNS: None configured
Secondary DNS: None configuredDon't know why you have 2 NICS, but I don't like the IP for NIC2.
IP=192.168.100.2 would attempt to assign a Gateway of 192.168.100.1 which would conflict with a cable modem. That could be why it's not assigned a gateway. Change IP2 to 192.168.1.xxx & assign the same gateway as NIC1.

Reason for 2 NICs is to keep static private network (somewhat) isolated from regular dhcp dynamic network. This system is connected to my private network as well as my regular network used for internet access. Static private network is mainly for extra level of security and to be as isolated as possible from the WWW. I have been enabling and disabling the 2nd NIC in this system because having both live all the time would defeat the security purpose of dual NICs. Your suggestion that the 192.168.100.x could conflict is an interesting detail. I will drastically change the network to 130.0.0.x with subnet 255.255.255.0 and NO GATEWAY for Static IP configured NIC and see if that makes it behave better.I'm willing to place a hefty BET that this one is all about metrics.

What O/S are you using?

...Edit after re-reading...

XP, right...

Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections > Right click and select Properties of NICx > Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Select Properties > Advanced > Untick "Automatic Metric" > Set the NIC you want to be Primary as LOWER than the one you want to be secondaryQuote from: DaveLembke on January 18, 2011, 04:01:38 AM

Sorry, I don't understand where you're coming from here.

If OP has set the IP manually how could it assign a gateway?

(I'm not trying to fight, I'm trying to understand your thought process)Sid... I think you are right on the money!!!, although still dont understand why IE would try to use a NIC with no gateway configured. With only one gateway present, it should just use that gateway no matter how many other network connections there are that are lacking a gateway config. But if the network speed rules out over the logic of a single gateway config then YOUR CORRECT. We will find out when I get home tonight and check this out.

This below has a statement that might be the cause if it is an Automatic Metric Problem with XP. The local static network is screaming 1000mbps and the internet connection is going through a 100mbps NIC with a broadband connection of 20mbps down and 12mbps up. The automatic metric feature looking for the faster connection would pick the 2nd NIC which has no gateway and so internet connection with IE is broken with it enabled.

The Automatic Metric feature can be useful when the routing table contains multiple routes for the same DESTINATION. For example, if you have a computer with a 10 megabit (Mb) network interface and a 100 Mb network interface, and the computer has a default gateway that is configured on both network interfaces, the Automatic Metric feature assigns a higher metric to the slower network interface. This feature can force all of the traffic that is destined for the Internet, for example, to use the fastest network interface that is available.

The real test will be tonight when I go home and change the Advanced Metric as you suggested. Sure sounds like a valid cause!!!

Here is the link for more info, in case anyone wants to read further about Automatic Metric's: HTTP://support.microsoft.com/kb/299540Oddly enough that is what it was. Automatic Metric was grabbing the faster GIGABIT network instead of the slower 100mbps network side with the gateway with broadband ISP. Many thanks!!!Quote from: DaveLembke on January 18, 2011, 11:14:50 PM

No worries. I've had this happen to me a few times on servers as well.

Solve : Wireless asking for Security Key when I have secuity disabled?

Answer»

Hi, we have 2 laptops in our home. One is slightly older, I had a new hard drive and WINDOWS reinstalled over the weekend. Its great, runs way faster but now when I try to connect it to our wireless it is asking for a security key to connect to our linksys. We do not have it set up to need a security key. I double checked with my other computer, went to the linksys settings page, and it still shows we have wireless security disabled and that laptop is connected just fine. What gives? Ive gotta get this other laptop connected again, its my sons, he's drivin me nuts about it!

ThanksAre you sure it's trying to connect to the right wireless network?

Is there a list of available networks?Yes its the same one, the list of available networks is the same on both computers. It just SAYS its an open network on this computer and the same one is security enabled on the other one. Says (WPA2) on the one that wont connect while it doesnt say that on the other if that means anything. That laptop always connected fine before. Just figures, now that its got a new hard drive and 90% faster, it wont connect.Quote from: djleah963 on January 18, 2011, 10:03:20 AM

Is there just the one network in both lists?

It SEEMS ODD that one machine would pick it up as unsecured, and another as WPA2 secured.

Have you tried MOVING the laptop closer to the wireless access point? Its pretty close. Now it says "Validating Identity" and a pop up window says "We could not locate the certificate to validate your identity". Whatever that means. I just contacted linksys and they wouldnt help me because my router model wasnt new enough. Great.Never mind! I went into properties of the lilnksys signal and it said IEEE 802.1x was enabled. I disabled it and now it works fine! Thanks for tryin!

Hi guys, I just purchased 2 Dell Inspiron 15 laptops. I got a new BELKIN N router and set it up last night. I hooked it all up and then CONNECTED laptop 1 to the internet through it, worked fine. I then connected laptop 2 to it, it also worked fine. Now laptop 1 will not connect to the network. Laptop 2 works great but when I try to connect laptop 1 it says it is connected to an UNKNOWN network and I have no internet connection. I am using Windows 7. Thanks in advance.

JPit sounds like the NLA (Network Location Awareness) is having issues with your network. You could try running a ipconfig /all to see if you have the network information (ip address, default gateway, DNS suffix). try running a release and renew:

IPCONFIG /RELEASE
IPCONFIG /RENEW

and see if this solves your issue.

please see the link below for more information:

Have you reset the router (unplug it for 15-30 seconds and then plug it back in)?I RAN a release and renew as described by wbrost and it works perfectly now. Thanks for the replies fellas.

Solve : 2nd Router IP address?

My wireless device can see the wireless router signal but cannot connect. Is there a way to know the IP of the wireless router so I can get in and configure?

ThanksHope this helps you.

truenorthThanks, but I'm trying to figure out the "2nd" router...You NEED to look at the documentation. You did not tell us what BRAND or model, so we can not EVEN make near guess.
Give some info about the first router.
Give some details about the second router.
In general, router must have separate IP address.
Why do you need a second router? Most wireless routers have WIRED ports also so you could use just the wireless router with one wired connection. Personally, I prefer wired connections. I have a desktop (192.168.0.2) connected by ethernet to a router (192.168.0.1). Now I attached a second wireless router the the main router by ethernet. My wireless device can see the wireless router signal but cannot connect. Is there a way to know the IP of the wireless router so I can get in and configure?

Thanks

You need to look at the documentation. You did not tell us what brand or model, so we can not even make near guess.
Give some info about the first router.
Give some details about the second router.
In general, router must have separate IP address.

Is it new or second hand? There might be some config's left over from the previous owner that only allow specific machines to connect (MAC filtering).

Solve : Network manager?

Hi, can someone find me a manager for my wireless INTERNET that is able to block ip's, kick, control connection etc.
i'v looked everywhere and i cant find one.
btw by kick i mean LIKE when someones CONNECTED to the wireless network i can kick them so they LOOSE the connection and have to reconnect also even looking for ban Is it your wireless network? If so, configure the router/AP properly.

If not, don't be mean.

I doubt there is a way to "kick" someone off WITHOUT interacting with the router/AP, as if there was kids would just sit at starbucks and kick everyone off for giggles.

Solve : WiFi security: n00bie wondering what's the optimum safeguard to use in public??

Safety Course 101 question:
At home I use my desktop COMPUTER for work and school. But now I WANT to start USING my laptop for the same things at a public hot spot. That means I'll be going on the Internet via wi-fi on a daily basis. I understand that when it comes to safe surfing a VPN is something a security concious person should set up on their laptop. Is that TRUE? If so, can you recommend the name of a good VPN? And will the VPN slow down my surf sessions at all as opposed to a hard wired connection?

Someone PROBABLY changed some share/file permissions.

Also, you didn't create a backdoor, you simply created a shortcut to the server that responds to "companyweb", which is probably the SBS machine.

Have you tried connecting to "\\companyweb" in Windows Explorer?

Solve : Anonymous Browsing Problems?

Answer»

Right, this problem has been causing me some confusion lately, so I thought I'd ask the internet and see what you guys can suggest:

Before I start, I'll just let you KNOW I'm running vista 32bit.

I'm currently in China, and so my browsing is slightly limited by the Great Firewall. I BOUGHT an anonymous web-browsing program that my neighbour suggested, and this worked for some sites blocked sites but not for facebook or youtube. So far, not very interesting.

Now, I connect through the internet through a network normally, but my neighbor has wireless internet and was using his at first, and I still couldn't get to the these website, whilst my number, running the same operating, the same anonymizing program and the same internet connection COULD. This leads me to believe that it may be something to do with my connection settings: I've tried four different browsers(Firefox, IE, Chrome and even downgraded to Netscape) but no luck. In additiona to this, I'm encountering some problems playing online games , and again I suspect it has something to do with my connection settings but I don't really know where to begin when it comes to checking to see if they're as they should be. Any IDEAS?why not ask your neighbor how he is doing it?

This site will probably be blocked for you, but on the off chance it isn't, there's a lot of good information .

http://www.masternewmedia.org/privacy_security/bypass-internet-censorship/bypass-internet-filters-anonymous-browsing-guide-20071118.htmSites LIKE Facebook and YouTube are blocked because of China's laws.
You are trying to break their laws, or at least I think.

Solve : Is using unsecure wifi safe??

Answer»

I just bought a D-Link Range Booster for my PC, and it PICKS up a few unsecure AVAILABLE wifi networks, either from in my apartment building or next door, but is that putting my PRIVACY and security at risk? I have a Firewall and Anti-Virus, but if b...y chance the FREE internet signal was from a hacker, are they able to get into my COMPUTER or find out my passwords when I log into my sites like Facebook, or do online banking? I've heard of keylogging, etc, and that worries me, and I just want to be certain it's safe. I hope someone can answer my question. Thanks =)Unsafe networks means it's open for anyone

However, this might turn into an issue if the owner doesn't want you in their network

It's unlikely this guy would hack your computer, becuase that is a crime

If he want to protect his network, he could add a password, or blacklist the unknown computers connected to it, preventing them to reach anything by this networkIt may be illegal to connect and use someone else's network or internet connection without their permission.I would use it.....
But then I know several ways to secure a computer even on known risky connections.
Your best bet would be to talk to your neighbors that have secured wifi and offer to pay them a few dollars a month for access to their protected internet connection. It is no.
On a unsecure network with Vista or Win7, select "Public." My sister did something bad. She choose Home instead of public.

Solve : m.yahoo.com?

Answer»

Anyone know how to block m.yahoo? I SUCCESSFULLY blocked it for a while by blocking all cookies from yahoo.com. But for the past week or so if I do this I can't access my e-mail. Blocking cookies from m.yahoo didn't work. I also went into security setting and listed m.yahoo.com as a blocked site. This did not work. If you go to address bar and remove the "m" it just comes right back. You can usually go to the bottom of the page and click "classic" but sometimes the page is configured differently and the classic option does not appear. From what I've read on other forums, this has been a problem for a while but yahoo MADE some change just recently to make it "impossible" to block. Any ideas? Using windows vista and firefox.Browse to m.yahoo.com in your browser. It should then redirect you to .m1.yahoo.com, i.e. for me it's ie.m1.yahoo.com. This is what you want to block.

m.yahoo.com is only a REDIRECTION site and no cookies are created on that domain. Thanks, but I don't see what you mean. The address in my browser is m.yahoo.com. It doesn't change to anything resembling what you said to look for. I checked my cache to try clearing it but it was already empty. I feel like Yahoo is hijacking my computer.Just a little note. When I typed m.yahoo.com I got this... http://m.yahoo.com/?_ym=1 That's very strange. You are right. When I type in m.yahoo I get the same thing you do. My problem is, if I type in yahoo.com I get this: http://m.www.yahoo.com. I don't want that, so I remove the "m" but it just reappears and I am STUCK with this alternate format that I don't like.

You mean you don't like the m.www.yahoo.com format, or the format of the actual page? In either case, I doubt there's anything you can do about it.
Go down to the bottom of the page, where all the FINE print is. On the bottom left-hand corner, there is a link that says: Return to Classic Yahoo.com. Click on that.

Solve : New router, lost ability to printer from laptop?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 4700 desktop with an HP Deskjet 6540 printer and a router provided by Verizon, our local ISP. The router recently DIED (the radio stopped broadcasting a wireless signal) so they sent me a new one which I swapped out with no problem. I then Id'd the router on my Dell inspiron 1520 laptop, and was connected to the internet wirelessly with no problem. I then tried to print. I simply can't print from my laptop as I had previously done with no problem. I deleted the no longer working HP printer from my laptop list of printers and faxes, rebooted, and then tried to add a printer, but all the wizard could find was "Microsoft Windows Network", no printers. I then went to the desktop, re-ran the setup wizards for setting up a home network and a wireless network, and did the same thing on the laptop, and then tried to add a printer again, but the printer wizard only finds "Microsoft Windows Network". It doesn't find any printers. Any ideas as to why my laptop can no longer see the printer and/or how I can add the printer to my laptop?
Thanks for your help.1. Internet Connection.
a. Connects to internet service provider (ISP) via DSL phone line or wireless mobile?

2. Router.
a. Provided by Verizon.
b. Is this a wireless home router (with four wired LAN ports)?
c. Make, model number, version number. Look for sticker or ID plate (bottom of router?).

3. Desktop COMPUTER.
a. Dell Dimension 4700.
b. What operating system and service pack level; e.g. Windows XP Pro SP3?
c. Does it CONNECT with router? By wire (ethernet cable?) or wireless?

4. Printer.
a. HP Deskjet 6540
b. How does it connect to your network ?
(1) Direct connection to desktop computer via wire to:
(a) Parallel port?
(b) USB port?
(c) Other?
(2) Direct connection to network via JetDirect card (ethernet cable)?
(3) Wireless?

5. Laptop.
a. Dell Inspiron 1520
b. What operating system and service pack level?
c. How does it connect to your network? Wireless?Problem solved. The new router allowed the laptop to connect to the web, but not to the network. When I went into Mcafee on the desktop I saw that the ip address of the laptop was no longer listed. I entered the ip address of the laptop, and voila, the laptop saw the network, added the printer, and I was back in business.
Thanks for the quick response. That's why I love this place when I have a problem.Quote from: kealii21 on October 29, 2009, 08:03:18 PM

When I went into Mcafee on the desktop I saw that the ip address of the laptop was no longer listed.

McAfee what? What type of component needed the IP Address - Firewall?McAfee is the anitvirus, spyware, etc. software I use on the desktop. It also controls access to my home network. If the ip address of the computer seeking to connect to the network isn't listed within McAfee, then McAfee won't allow that computer to see the network. Once I saw that the ip address of the laptop was not listed, it was clear why the laptop was not seeing the network - the McAfee software was blocking access. By adding the ip address as being a trusted address to McAfee, it immediately recognized the laptop and allowed access to the home network, and thus to the printer. Why it stopped recognizing the laptop when the router was changed remains the mystery, but as long as everything works, I don't really care.Okay, thanks for the response.

Solve : Possible bad TCP/IP stack in Windows XP??

Answer»

Thanks in advance for any help you all can offer me! My COMPUTER info is as follows:

Windows XP service pack 3 (legit copy) with current updates
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 x2
Motherboard: Abit An8 32x
Ram: 2 gigs corsair
Video card: XFX Geforce 7900 GT
HD: 300 GB Western Digital
Wireless router: Linksys WRT54G
DSL Modem: Motorola (not sure of the model number)
Wireless card: Linksys WUSB54GP USB receiver

I apologize if this gets long but I'll provide as much detail as possible.

A few days ago mid-browsing my connection to the internet stopped working. As the other computers in the house are still able to connect, both via ethernet and wirelessly, I have to assume the problem is with my machine.

If I try to "repair" the connection, that window stops responding and will display indefinitely. Same thing happens if I try to disable the wireless connection manually. It will hang, and then after I close it out by ending the task and send the error report to microsoft, it will not enable and comes up with an error message that says it's unable to connect.

I've tried switching USB ports, same problem. I've tried uninstalling the driver in device manager and the window freezes the same way as when I try to disable it. If I restart, it gets stuck on the "windows is shutting down" screen, forcing me to do a hard power down (it doesn't do this if the Linksys USB receiver is unplugged). A few times it's even displayed a BLUE screen of death that says that windows has shut down to prevent damage, citing rdbss.sys as the problem. Upon restarting with the Linksys receiver plugged in, it WILL actually connect to the network and send/receive over the internet for about 30 seconds, then it just stops working. Once this happens, even though it still displays that I'm connected to my wireless connection, not only can I not get out to the internet, I can't ping my router.

I've tried uninstalling the driver in safe mode, and it successfully uninstalled once, but not the next time (I tried again from another USB port), but the same problem persists as soon as I restart and PLUG in the card. I've even tried a backup wireless receiver card, an SMC usb receiver, and it, too, won't connect. It finds the available networks but will not connect. I tried this one on multiple USB ports as well.

I tried to do a system restore to an earlier date, and even though system restore is enabled, there were no checkpoints to restore to. I thought this was odd.

I use AVG for virus protection and Ad Aware AE (active) and Spybot Search & Destroy (scans only) for spyware protection. All turned up CLEAN scans and per a friend's suggestion I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and scanned with that as well, again with clean results. All the definition files were up-to-date as I updated them manually after downloading them on another computer. Scandisk reported no errors either.

A friend of mine who is a computer guru suggested that it might be a bad TCP/IP stack. When I googled this, one walkthrough for repairing the stack said to ping 127.0.0.1 and if it comes back as a loss, that's the problem, and if not, it's something else. My ping came back just fine, so I don't know if it's worth it to try to repair the stack or if you all might have some other ideas.

A couple of miscellaneous things that probably have nothing to do with anything: I usually leave the computer running day/night, my hard drive is nearly at capacity with just under 10 gigs free, and my video card has been on the outs for months. I think it's just overheating since it's overclocked as it displays random colored pixels and goes all crazy if I fire up a graphics intensive game. Everything else has been functioning perfectly.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer. I browsed these forums to see if I could find an answer but I think I need more of a "diagnosis" than can be offered from my just looking at other peoples' past problems. Cheers.

Jeff

Overclocking can cause problems, however I don't think that the problem..

Have you treid the latest drivers from the manufactor? (Linksys)Thanks for the reply.

I have, indeed, tried updating the drivers. It took a bunch of tries just to uninstall the old ones in safe mode, but I don't think it's a simple driver issue as I've tried a different wireless adaptor from a different manufacturer with no luck.

The video card was overclocked from the factory and has been on the outs for the better part of a year so my first thought is that it has nothing to do with what's going on here.

On a side note, I don't think it's a USB issue either, as I'm able to use other devices in the same USB ports just fine (iphone, thumb drive etc.).

Do you really think that would solve it?

YES!My cable modem is a Motorola and I've yet to have a single problem with it.
In either case I really don't see how the modem could have any bearing over the wireless connection to the router.

Additionally I might add that this has nothing to do with the TCP stack; TCP works over the connection, but has nothing to do with it being activated/connected.just wondering if the system could be reacting this way due to being over clocked. Have you tried connecting the wireless to a different system? Also, Have you connected your computer directly to the router and or modem? Thanks for the replies.

The adaptor works fine on another computer. I've tried 2 adaptors from 2 different manufacturers. Haven't tried connecting via Ethernet as that wouldn't do any good long term-- I need to connect this particular machine wirelessly.

I did end up doing a reset for the TCP/IP stack... no luck with that either...

Jeffit would let us know if there is an issue with getting out to the internet. have you checked the event viewer to see if there are issues with the system and hardware / software?Quote from: jeffa on October 27, 2009, 06:43:22 PM

tried this:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Thanks for all the replies guys, I really appreciate it. I did end up figuring out the problem. Here's the solution for anyone who might come across this topic in a search:

Turned out to be a virus that infects the master boot record, which is why none of the virus or spyware protection programs I used could detect it. I guess I would have needed a root kit cleaner for that. The virus, to the best that I can tell, was win32.mebroot.bz, and the way to get rid of it is to boot off of the Windows XP CD into the Windows recovery console and then run "fixmbr".

I figured it out on a fluke. While I was backing up some of my data on an external hard drive I noticed that in the C:\Documents and Settings folder that two new user accounts were present: "HelpAssistant" and "HelpAssistant.THE-MONSTER". I googled this and eventually found another forum with a topic on the win32.mebroot.bz virus, which creates a HelpAssistant user account and then starts filling the temporary internet files folder. As my hard drive was spinning non-stop and a crashing issue had popped up, I looked at my C: properties I noticed that there were about 6 gigs less room than the day before, and I obviously hadn't downloaded anything large since my connection was dead.

I put 2+2 together, ran fixmbr, deleted the bogus user accounts and that seems to have done the trick. No more hard drive spinning, no more crashes, and my wireless connection is back to functioning perfectly.

Thanks again for the help... I hope this might be useful for anyone else that comes across this topic.Thank you for the information.

Pls help! 1. Bring up a command prompt window, enter the following commands, and "post" the output to this thread:
o ipconfig /all
o route print

To get a command window (within Windows XP):
o Start
o Run
o type "cmd" without quotes, select OK

The following syntax will redirect command output to a text file (if that helps):
o ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt
o route print > c:\route.txt

2. What operating system and service pack LEVEL is the PC using; e.g. Windows XP Home Edition SP3?I HIGHLY recommend you get surge protection. These days you will find surge protection for power as well as your telephone line.

Thanks for the advice. I can stream files but as it gets popular. I now know that my downloading is not affected. If I upload something while my website is visited, uploading will get slow.Maybe I'm not reading your question right, but all your site visitors would be limited to the speeds of their local ISP. The faster your ISP CONNECTION is the less congestion and slow downs your site visitors would see but they will never go any faster than their local ISP's speed limits (you get what you pay for). The wording up to 5mb gives an indication that you may never achieve the 5mb upstream.

Are you running the latest or best firmware for that "wireless linksys" component? Check the Linksys SITE for downloads and the forums to see what users are saying about that model (and hardware version number).
