Solve : Unplugged Cable Error but Computer to Computer fine.?

Answer»

I am sorry, I know there are heaps of threads on the Unplugged Cable error but I have tried everything in those threads.

I am running an AMD Athlon 4000+ with Win XP.

I have 2 computers connected to a multi input MODEM and both were running fine. ONE morning the XP MACHINE started giving me the Cable Unplugged error. I have done the usual: Unplugged everything, changed cables, tested cables on other machines, changed ports, used ports with other computers and unistalled hardware and reinstalled.

The weird thing is that if I connect the 2 PCs directly, it works as does connecting it to my xbox with a cable. I tried my ISP provider but they could not help. I thought it would be the NETWORK card (4-5 years old) but then it wouldn't work PC to PC would it?

Please help.
try to use other network card first.

does two ligths are on?

did you check if there are power in your modem?

did you try to change the modem too?

if it is connected in peer to peer
then it looks like you are using cable which is for peer to peer connection. check your cable are cross over type wiring use a straigth-through wiring if you are trying to connect in hub/router.

Solve : How do I set up two PCs to use the same printer??

Answer»

Can someone please post me (or post a link) some VERY clear, step by step instructions for how to set up two PCs to USE the same printer through the home network? I've looked at a few different set of instructions I've found online but have NEVER been able to figure it out or get them set up right. The main PC is HARDWIRED to the printer, and I know there is a way to set up the second PC to connect to the printer through the router, but I don't know how to do it. Please help!
Sharing The Printer

It does not matter which machine the printer is connected to; as long as the printer is connected and File And Printer Sharing is enabled, sharing the printer is simple. To share the printer from the computer it is connected to, do the following:

1.Click Start, Settings, and Control Panel and then double-click Printers And Faxes.
2.Right-click the default printer (the one with the black check mark beside it) and choose Sharing.
3.Click the Sharing tab and the Share This Printer radio button.
4.Click OK, and the printer will now be accessible to the other PC in the network.

Adding a shared printer.

To add the shared printer to the printer list on the computer that is not physically connected to the printer, do the following:

1.Click Start, Settings, and Control Panel and then double-click Printers And Faxes. Click the Add Printer link.
2.Click Next on the Add Printer Wizard window. On the LOCAL Or Network Printer window, click the radio button next to A Network Printer, Or A Printer Attached To Another Computer and then click Next.
3.On the Specify A Printer window, click the radio button next to Browse For A Printer and click Next. On the Browse For Printer window, click the MSHOME workgroup and click Next. The shared printer name will appear below the MSHOME workgroup name.
4.Click the shared printer and then click Next.
5.Click Finished on the Completing The Add Printer Wizard window.

To verify that your printer was set up successfully, you can view the printer in the printer list under Printers And Faxes in the Control Panel. If your printer is in the list, it has been set up successfully. A message will also tell you that your printer has been set up successfully upon completing the Add Printer Wizard. 1. Operating System. What operating systems are the two computers using (e.g. Windows XP Home Edition SP3, Windows XP Professional SP3, Vista something)?

2. Windows XP Reference: Sharing printers^They're both using XP Pro SP3. (Forgot to mention that....)Quote from: roccenstein on November 02, 2009, 07:57:14 AM

Alright, then go ahead and follow Vikram Varaprasad's instructions. What are you waiting for?LOL... I will, as soon as I get back over to my Mom's house, where the two are located. Will let you guys know the outcome.

Solve : Network Backup Location Problems?

Answer»

I am running a Dell Inspiron 530 with Vista Home Prim. I have a home network set up that works fairly well but one of my computers is running XP Prof. and I have a 250G Western Dig NetCenter also. I have a HP 9800 printer connected to the WD Netcenter and can print to it from the XP computer. All can TRANSFER files and I can see the WD netcenter on the Inspiron but...
I cannot add the 9800 to the Vista Machine nor can I set up the WD net as a backup location which is why I bought it in the first place.
I feel that Layer Link Topology is prehaps a culprit but even though I have service pack II on the XP it will not show up properly in my network map. When I try to set the backup location I get this message box

No mapping between account names and security IDs was done (0x80070534)

I have mapped the WD network drive but what else do I need to do. ThanksThe various proposed solutions on the internet either weaken security on the Vista side or diddle with Samba on the NAS side.

I'm pretty much shooting in the dark; take these links with a grain of salt:
Vista Backup & WD My Book World (NAS)
No mapping between account names and security IDs was done
Vista Backup and Restore center will not backup to Network Location
Vista TUTORIAL - Backup won't connect to a NetCenter NAS
Vista Backup to NAS error 0x80070534
Thanks for the input. I have gone to all the links you sent and drawn one conclusion from most of the info given, you need to adjust the registry or some other advanced scripting. I just got this computer and don't feel comfortable doing that. My question is, does Vista have problems with ALL external harddrives as a backup location or is just the ones running Samba. If so is there a harddrive that is known to work as a backup with vista. Thanks again.I have no specific knowlege of Vista or Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices, so I can't give you a definitive answer. I suspect most NAS devices use an embedded Linux operating system with Samba because there's no licensing fees. It sounds like this could be a problem if the Linux/Samba configuration (version?) doesn't support NTLMv2.

Although they appear to be giving "Everyone" access to the data, I thought the proposal at the end of the following thread looks simple and is worth a shot:
VISTA Backup & WD My Book World (NAS)

Proposal was:
Quote

Give full access to the "Everyone" user option on the folder share you wish to backup to. After that, set vista's backup to that folder share you just updated and enter the user/password – Everyone/ (I guess your admin password, but maybe 123456 should work as well).

Since I don't run Vista, I'm not familiar with the "Backup" program; but I've got to believe you can backup to any "dumb" hard drive (INTERNAL or external) because there's no additional security layer involved. However, please don't run out and buy an external hard drive based on what I just said. There's got to be a way to test this.Well as with most seemingly difficult problems there is always a not so obvious solution. I tried again based on something I read on one of the links you sent and low and behold I logged into the Netcenter as pretty as you please. I used guest as my login and the password I set for my user when I set up the unit, (Not Guest). Someone had mentioned that most NAS come with a guest login and that is what I did. How it transferred the PW for the other logon to guest I will never know but it obviously did. I am not sure how USING guest will affect my security but with a password, router, and firewall I figure it is worth the risk. Thanks again and I hope anyone using the Western Digital Netcenter reads this and it works for them. Another job well done.Any one reading this thread should also go to the Western Digital Web Site for updates and very specific instructions.

http://www.westerndigital.com/
Like most others whose posts I've read on the subject; whatever they had to do, they're just glad to be able to use the WDC NetCenter with Vista.

Perhaps I should "let sleeping dogs lie". I was unable to find any reference to the WDC NetCenter access problem you were experiencing from Vista on the WDC website. Very disappointing, since I can't believe WDC wasn't notified of the issue.

At any rate, they do list a "firmware" download as well as upgrade instructions on the website. It's so old, they don't even list Vista as a supported operating system (maybe to provide cover for themselves?). Upgrading firmware is always a risk. You don't want the upgrade to be interrupted...

Many people subscribe to the belief "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!".

Solve : the network path was not found?

Answer»

Hello there

I have small network with two desktops running win XP pro SP3. Both are wired connected to a dlink switch. both are in the same workgroup i can ping the SYSA from SYSB with IP address and vice versa. I cant ping the SYSA with system name. when i try to run the path \\, it gives "The network path was not found" error. same from both the PCs. tried all possible solutions from the internet. none worked. in one system, symantec End point protection antivirus is installed and in other system, Avast home edition is installed. Firewall is on both the systems. i am trying to solve this problem from the last two days. till now its not solved. Please help me anybody. Thanks in advance.1. Objective. You never said what you're trying to do. Are you trying to enable "FILE and Printer Sharing" within your local area network?

2. Reference(s):
Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP
File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows

Troubleshooting Computer Browsing on SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows
Computer Browsing for SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows

3. Possible causes of "The network path was not found":
a. Host firewalls are being used
b. The computers are not server computers
c. Computers are not on the same TCP/IP subnet

4. Host Firewall. For the Windows XP firewall, the "File and Printer Sharing exception" must be enabled (from Exceptions tab of Windows Firewall Control Panel applet).

For third party firewall, the equivalent must be enabled for the following types of unsolicited incoming traffic:
o User Datagram Protocol (UDP) port 137
o UDP port 138
o Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) 139

It might be best to disable the firewalls while you're trouble shooting this problem. If it works with no firewall, then the firewall was blocking your traffic.

5. Not server computers. VERIFY the "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" component is installed and enabled (the checkbox is checked) within the network connection "Properties" window on both computers.

6. Not on same TCP/IP subnet. If using TCP/IP, check the configuration to ensure both computers have IP address on the same network (subnet mask must be the same).

7. Services. Within both computers, verify the following "services" are running:
a. Computer Browser
b. Server
c. Workstation

To access services, select Start -> right-click My_Computer -> select MANAGE -> select Services.A network with 2 machines would normally not have anyway to reslove the name. This means when you ping by name the machines don't know where to GET the info about the name....like the IP.

You can make sure that NetBios is enabled and if after about 15 mins it still doesn't work you can look into a host file.

Solve : YouTube slower at weekday nights?

Answer»

If I try to play a HD or high quality video on YOUTUBE after dusk Eastern time, it is usually slow. I have cable INTERNET and many people have the same ISP. I know that Cable Internet shares bandwidth, DSL does not. Am I better of by not touching the HQ/HD button after Dusk, change to DSL or upgrade the service, or something else.I think upgrading to DSL would be best for you.Quote

upgrading to DSL
Did you mean downgrading?

neelchauhan
What is your ISP advertised speed?
What are your results from here: http://www.speedtest.net/Depends on how important touching that button after dusk is important to you Run a speedtest first but youtube usually sucks at peak times anyway. As the load on their server increases what they can SEND out diminishes. I don't think there is a server out there that doesn't fall prey to load limits.Quote
I know that Cable Internet shares bandwidth, DSL does not.

Everybody shares bandwidth at some point in the process. The important question is what speeds does your cable operator and DSL operator offer. And for how much?

In areas where cable and phone service have been upgraded some very fast speeds are POSSIBLE, but you will pay for it. In areas where the plant has not been upgraded your stuck with what you get.

Solve : Using two broadband connections in one network?

Answer»

Hello everybody,

I would like to know whether we can use two broadband connections in one network?

I am having a network with 7 computers and I have two broadband connections, one is 512 kbps and another is 256 kbps, all the SYSTEMS are setted as acquire IP address automatically, now my question is how to use both of the broadbands in network to get maximum benefit of speed..

I am connecting the internet connection directly into a switch from where i will get internet to all the computers. Right now i am connecting one broadband connection at a time. please tell me the procedure to use both connections at a time.

Combining them both will result in more BANDWIDTH but no gain in speed. You will need a dual WAN router like this one http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2820.html

You can download the manual for it here http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/downloads.html

It may not be an option for you but a single faster connection would give you better service. Anymore, a 256 kbps connection barely qualifies as broadband.Quote from: rthompson80819 on November 05, 2009, 09:22:36 AM

... Anymore, a 256 kbps connection barely qualifies as broadband...
DSL UPLOAD speed

Here's a sampling:
Downstream/Upstream
6.0Mbps/512kbps
3.0Mbps/384kbps
1.5Mbps/256kbps
768kbps/128kbpsFind another ISP that will give you 1.5 mbps or better.
Much more cost effective.

Here in California one service offers this:
Quote
Pricing Information
Location: California
Starting as low as $79.99 /month
Speeds up to 7.1Mbps for qualifying customers for 12 months with a 3-year contract (plus taxes and fees).
But you may find better deals. Google DSL Prices
AT&T claims to have 6 mbps for $35. But read the fine print.

Solve : a bout IP addresses?

Answer»

Why two copmuters after DISCONNECTING them from a NETWORK and reconnecting them togther they would have IP addresses?to communicate.to communicate.
as simple as that man!1. Why. EITHER the computers are manually configured with "static" IP addresses or they end up with "APIPA" IP addresses through automatic self-assignment.

2. I can THINK of four ways an IP address is set on the computer:
a. Automatic assignment via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
b. Automatic self-assignment from APIPA range
c. Static assignment (manually set)
d. Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP) used to obtain an IP address from a configuration SERVER.

3. If the computer is configured to "Obtain an IP address automatically" one of two things will happen:
a. It will broadcast a request for an IP address and a DHCP server will respond with one.
b. It will broadcast a request for an IP address and DHCP server(s) are either not available or unable to provide one. In that case, Windows being Windows will assign itself an Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address from within the APIPA range (169.254.0.0/16).

4. Reference(s):
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
Link-local address
Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP)
Thank you all. I think the answer as dahlarbear said is because of APIPA.
Thank you a lot and special thanks for you dahlarbear. You're welcome.

Solve : Losing my Default Gateway??

Then I get windows to resolve the issue and it tells me that it fixed the default gateway because it was missing. It seems to disable my lan port and enables it back to fix it and I already swapped out my router thinking it was the issue and used my lan port#2 and still no fix! I need some help! Please!! Thank u! run the ipconfig /all command, is the default gateway showing up as zeros? Are you using a nVidia motherboard and/or network adapter on your Windows 7 system?

If so, see pages 2 and 3 of this thread Repair default gateway every 5 min is getting old

Solve : Router configuration?

Answer»

I have a question about configuring the router. Sometimes when I was configuring the router and I do not know the full command I tried to get help for the commands. Sometimes I got "", but I do not know what does it MEAN. What should I write instead of ?It's not CLEAR which commands you're referring to. Most home routers use a website interface for configuration. LARGER businesses use commercial Cisco routers which have their own command language for configuration.

Perhaps the manufacturer of the router provides online documentation at their website. Or perhaps if you identified the make and model number of the router, someone COULD assist you?

The expression "" represents a "carriage return". In the days of the mechanical typewriter, when you got to the end of the line, you would need a followed by a "line feed" to position the "type" at the beginning of the next line on the page.

Perhaps the "" notation is asking you to use the "ENTER" key of the keyboard (but I believe Enter key generates "").

Solve : Wireless Network I Didn't Add?!?

Answer»

I have a home network set up to share INTERNET between two laptops. My brother said he kept getting DISCONNECTED from the internet and asked if it was happening to me too but it wasn't. We noticed when we CLICK "View Available WIRELESS Networks" there's a network we never CREATED or added called "PETERTAYLOR-PC_NETWORK" How could this happen if no one else goes on the admin computer?? Could someone be stealing our internet? Are you sure this Isn't just a neighbor's network that you are picking up?The wireless network will automatically search for a network available in range and shows you. If you want to connect to it click on connect shown on the list.....you can also tell the system not to automatically connect to other networks. It sounds like your brothers system is seeing the other network and trying to connect to it. Have him remove the auto connect and let us know.

Solve : router - Switch - router !!!?

Answer»

hello,

there is something i can't understand, recently the ISP sent a guy who setup the new internet system using the fiber optics, and he gave us a new router-modem to use, anyway i used to have a switch to use for non wireless computers so i reconnected the router with the switch using cross cable, then i tried to connect from the switch to the PC using straight cable but it didn't work!!, then i got the old router-modem and connected it to the switch using straight cable and it is works fine!!, then i connected cable from the router to the PC and it works fine, the ip address for the computer is 192.168.0.2 the gateway is 192.168.1.1 (the ip address of the main router-modem.

my questions is:

1:-what is wrong with the switch - computer connection why it didn't work.
2:- the ip address of the second router is 192.168.254.254 and i can't ping it or reach it at all even i connected trough it!!!

i think it is a big miss here

Note : please if you can't help me don't criticism
PS: this image to help you better understand my connection 1. Can't see the image clearly. Need more detail as to ports plugged into.
2. Why are you using a crossover cable?
3. A switch is never a router, but a router can be a switch. Routers assign IP's, switches don't.
4. I suspect you are plugged into the wrong ports on the routers and the switch.I agree with the Computer_Commando.
Trying to get twp routers to work together is link pulling a tooth.
But we are willing to help, if we can.
Some of the new routers don't care it you have a cross over or not.
Some older hubs/switches would have one jack that you could select as straight or cross over.
To use a second router as a switch, klyou need to do a few things.
First you have to log into the second router from a PC. Do not have this router connected to anything else. You have done this before, -right? You nee to set the router so that it is not the gateway and it is not the DCHP. The you may need to reset the IP of the router so that it is in the same sublet used by the new router, but not the very same IP. You WANT to second router to act like a CLIENT to the new router. Maybe 92.168.1.33 or something close, but not too close.
Now hook up the cables the way you think they should go.
You will have to reset the entire system, bother routers and all PCs in the system. You can NOT use the WAN port on the second router.
It may take a bit of time for the PC to find the right address to use. You may have to a disable and them repair to get the Windows system to find the right IP and gateway.

Once you get it right, it will stay that way for along time.Quote

the cable which connects the main router and the switch plugged on port number 3 (router) to the WAN port on the switch so i can get the internet works, the i have another cable from the switch port # 3 to the WAN/LAN port on the second router, then a cable from the second router port 2 to the PC.

Not NECESSARILY true. I have 2 routers connected exactly that way. It only works because default IP's of both routers are very different, i.e. 192.168.1.1 & 192.168.0.1

the same cable i connected it to the digital receiver it works fine!I found the problem, well. i can't believe that the 2 cables i use to test were NOT working!! i've got a new cable now and it works fine from the switch to the PC, thank you all for help guys.

but i am still a little bit confused about the cable types issue

from a router to switch what i need!! crossover or straight or it doesn't matter what about the new and the old routers- switch!! etc... from PC to PC!! if someone can explain than because i feel i lost all my informations

thanks again Crossover cables are generally used to connect one computer to another with no router, switch or hub. The "crossover" refers to CONNECTING the transmit of one computer to the receive of the other computer, so the receive and transmit pairs within the cable are actually crossed-over. A straight-thru cable would connect receive to receive and transmit to transmit. Routers and switches perform the crossover internally.Quote from: Computer_Commando on November 10, 2009, 02:25:20 PM

So is there a way that I can get more downloads with out paying or at least use a program that will keep track of how much download I have left...........thanks.....two-dogs No, there isn't, pay for your BANDWIDTH the same way that we all do.

Do you really think that we will help you bypass your ISP's security?

The only reason you are topping out above your limit is that you are a pirate. Get a life, pay for your software, grow a pair. I don't know what addage applies, but you need to pay somehow. Bugger Off. Quantos dude you have misunderstood me, I am trying to monitor my downloads not steal. I want to keep track so I don't go over. I would like some more migs but if that is not possible I would like to make SURE I don' t go over. I still SEEM to get downloads when the *censored* thing is out, and that should not be possible.......but thanks for your time anyways.........two-dogs Quit pirating and you won't go over the limit.

Solve : W7 and adapter-troubles?

Answer»

Have installed W7 on a partition to test it, a real one, no RTM. till hanging on XP for the time being. Device managerXP shows me the D-Link DWL-G510 ADAPTER and the 1394 and Nvidia adapters that I have diabled. W7 only shows the NVidia and no D-Link adapter. I installed the D-Link driver via the D-Link CD, ut nope, nothing shows. Do I have to take 'm out, restart and than put 'm in again or?? And if I do, has that CONSEQUENCES for XP? When in W7 I can see the light of the com-card so it seems to WORK, but no flickering and no recognition in the Device Manager...what now....?

Specs: AMD Athlon 64, 2.02Ghz, 3200+, 3Gb RAM, XP+SP3 and all the other gadgets of Uncle BILY..., AVG free, XP Firewall,
(W7= W7 Ultimate raw and pure...lol...have plans to use freeware only...)

Was not sure where exactly to put my question...my apologiesYou need to get the Windows 7 connected to the internet.
There are thousands of updates and drivers you can only get from the internet. Get a connection HOWEVER you can. Most common NIC cards work in Windows 7. But wireless is another thing. Unless you have the driver CD.

You have to make sure that the device actually has a driver for that OS. Not all devices have drivers for Windows 7.right, the company had just announced they had a beta driver for W7, have downloaded it, but not yet tried out...will report back

Solve : Smoothwall for Router OK on old PC?

Answer»

I have a old PC and the specs are below:
266MHz AMD CPU
128MB SDRAM
4GB hard drive
CD-ROM + Floppy
I will use a ISA 10 megabit Network card for the Internet in and a PCI Gigabit for the LAN. My Internet connection is faster than 10 Megabit and I will lose Internet speed but I will have a Gigabit network.
I will use it as a router and is Smoothwall for Router OK on old PC?The system requirements are extremely low, with any 386 and LATER Intel machine recommended, a MINIMUM of 8MB RAM, and only 100MB of disk space. Any computer made within the LAST 15 or so years should do just fine.Although, Installing Smoothwall on a hard drive will erase all data on that drive.

Solve : Blackberry?

Answer»

can anyone tell me where to find info to use a blackberry to GET internet connection on my PC? THANK you.Go to the website of your phone's manufacturer. Find the support section and locate the MODEM driver for your phone. If you were provided with a driver disk along with your phone, copy the modem driver from the disk onto your computer. If you were provided an executable file (.exe), a file that runs an installation program, then skip ahead to the "Creating the Connection" portion of this tutorial.

Step 2
After the phone is set to function as a modem, connect the phone to the computer via the USB cable. You will receive notification from your computer that new "hardware was found." You will be asked if you WOULD like your computer to find drivers for you phone automatically and you will also be given the option to specify the location of the driver. Choose to locate the driver and point the installation menu to the folder containing the driver.

You will be presented a list of different connection types, choose the option "Set up a Dial-up Connection." In the next window, enter #777 into the box labeled "Dial-up Phone Number." While the access number #777 works with most carriers, check with you carrier if you encounter access problems.

Step 3
You do not need to enter a username or password unless directed by your wireless provider. Create a name for your connection and enter it in the box labeled "Connection Name."

Step 4
Click connect at the bottom of the menu. You should be authenticated and connected within a matter of seconds. If you need to reestablish a connection, your connection will appear in the "Network" menu INSIDE of the "Control Panel."

Have been TRYING to connect an iPhone to the Wi-Fi of my Thomson Wireless Router. Had no trouble some MONTHS ago to connect my Laptop, but have tried using all the different sets of numbers supplied, but the rouiter will not let the iPhone connect to it. Have had the phone (new) checked out and all is WELL. Do these routers freeze up and denigh access. Can you help?Have you changed any settings in the router?

When you say you have tried all the numbers do you mean the WEP security KEYS?The numbers/letters I have tried are as follows, listed on the router:
Pass Code: 811D992AEB
Access Code: 3104550969
Wireless Pin: 4901 - 9643

Solve : Client service for network and VPN appeared - illegal hacking??

Answer»

I have just noticed that my computer (Windows - not sure which) has Client services for Netware installed (which I haven't installed) and after some googling of it I read lots about Virtual Private Networks for remotely accessing a computer. I went into control panel and then network connections, and there, LO and behold, is a VPN connected! This wasn't here a week ago. My ex-husband had access to my computer for an hour while I was out and he was babysitting. Is it possible he has set up a system to remotely access my computer? (He is an IT specialist by trade) If so, how much can he see and is this illegal? I USE a password for my gmail account but there wasn't one to log on to the computer. We don't give legal advice.
Please talk to your lawyer.
But yes, he did it.

Do you have any VPN listed in Add\Remove (Programs % Features)?

Solve : question about IP addresses?

Answer»

I made a network of two computers and I CONFIGURED them with the following STATIC IP addresses: 10.10.10.1 and 11.11.11.1 and both with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0. But when I tried to ping one of the computers from the other, I couldnot do that. What is the problem? Local Area Networks (LAN) are generally recognized to be within the address range of 192.168.x.y
Outside that range could be an internet public IP.
BTW, are the 2 computers connected through a router or through a crossover ethernet cable from LAN port on one to LAN port of the other? They were connected through a crossover ethernet cable. But when I CHANGED the ip address 11.11.11.1 to 10.10.10.2 everything becomes FINE and I could ping each computer from the other.Connect 2 Computers Directly USING Crossover CableThanks a lotLAN's need to be on the same Class C network.

Solve : LAN media converter for TV connection or Network cable??

I have a new Sony BLU Ray home theater that I am trying to connect to my home network. I assume this is how NETFLIX will send movies, etc. I have a Linkys wired/wireless router. The manual says to gowith a Ethernet/wireless LAN media converter if going wireless or a network cable if not. I'm not sure what this media converter is? I also BOUGHT 50 ft of Belkin network cable which I could also use (up to 1000MBps). Now I have heard that to get good quality and HD, you have to go with better more specifuc parts. So what should I use? Thankswolfman.

Solve : Bluetooth question?

I have just installed a bluetooth adapter, and i have just added a few bluetooth devices, which where mobile phones.

I was doing this through control panel > bluetooth devices > ADD new device, and using a standard account
But what is the difference in doing it through Network and sharing center > set up a connection or network.

I'am a bit lost, when it says "to add blue tooth devices for other uses use control panel > bluetooth devices.

Why carn't the other uses just add the device themselves using control panel, LIKE i have just done.
I added TWO devices through control panel, and one through "network and sharing center"
But i don't know what the difference is.

I have the public folder showing in my vista network folder, as shared, but it doesnt show up in the XP network folder on my xp. the other folders from my vista C drive do show in my xp network folder.

I was able to set those vista C drive folders to share with xp by right clicking each folder in vista individually, choosing share... from the right click menu, then from the "choose people to share with" dialogue box dropdown I chose "everyone' and from there the folder appears inside the XP network tab and its files are accessible..

But I cannot select the public folder on vista to do this, it won`t let me.. yet the public folder shows in the vista shared network folder, but not in the xp shared network folder, I have restarted the computers and tried to see it then but no result.

when I click the public folder and select sharing settings on the control bar above I get these settings captured here http://screencast.com/t/Y2Q2Zjhm

Solve : Questions about using the same network?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,
How are you all doing?
I think I just found some really good information to help with what is going on.
Just found out what maybe causing the passwords and possibly other information to change. On one of my accounts that I just got locked out of, the email address they had down for me was not even MINE. They somehow have my mom's email address. The reason we know this is because the password request thing that sites send to the email account, was sent to my mom's account. Now I know sometimes if email addresses are similar in anyway, then people could somehow make a typo when sending an email out. But her email is no where NEAR what mine is.

By using the same network, can that cause account information for sites we use to get changed?

Thanks,
Amy I would have to say NO. Using the same network should not cause account info for sites you use to get changed.

I also believe that most times when you do one of the Password rest things on a SITE it is an AUTOMATED system that sends out the email and not an actual person. Did you by chance sign up for these sites using your mom's email address.Quote from: AmyR7 on November 17, 2009, 08:29:47 PM

What is this?? what happend ?

when i type "arp -a" they show like this

they change IP per second & mac is all zeros.

pls help me.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]I believe your host is ATTEMPTING to contact nodes which are EITHER "missing", "non-responsive", or "disabled".

Use the "arp -d *" command to flush your local arp cache. If the same IP addresses with zero MAC addresses reappear, then something on your host is attempting to contact them.

You MIGHT be able to use a firewall LOG or utility similar to "netstat" to identify the sending process.

Incorrect. The originator's public IP is in the header. From that, you can DETERMINE his ISP. That's about as far as you can go. The authorities can go further, if there is probable cause.

Solve : Old pc not able to connect to modem/router?

Answer»

I have an old PC with windows 98. It has a wireless adapter. I have 6 different Dells, 4 of them laptops (all the others have XP).

I recently upgraded my DSL to a faster speed, and today I got a new modem. It is a wireless modem, so it is modem and router in one. i got all the computers to connect to it except for this old one. It is driving me batty trying to figure out why it's not working. The old setup had a westell modem and a linksys router. This new one is an AT&T 2Wire.

As you may know, windows 98 does not have built in Windows Wireless Network configuration the way the newer ones do. I have the software that came with the linksys adapter, but it doesn't seem to be helping me connect. I don't know if I didn't configure it right or not. The old router was not encrypted, so it was easy to connect to it (we don't have close neighbors and it was a really weak signal, you had to be in the house to connect to it). The new one has an encryption key.

I tried calling Linksys, but since the adapter is really old, they won't help me without charging me. I will probably try AT&T again on Monday. They're closed now. I don't know if they will be able to help me or not because their support is spotty and unpredictable in quality.

The adapter is a Wireless-B PCI Adapter, model number WMP11, and the software is called WLAN Monitor VER. 2.0. I did look on Linksys' network but couldn't find anything that helped me. I SET up a site profile in the software, but I don't know if I did it right. When I try to connect, it either doesn't work at all (says disconnected) or it says connected, but then it doesn't work (nothing works in the browser). But the signal from the modem is fine.

When setting it up, it asks me if I want 64 bit or 128 bit encryption. I have no idea what that means. I tried both choices, and neither worked anyway.

With the other pc's, I just went to the router's IP address that they gave me, in the browser, and it has a place where you can login with your AT&T account and type in the encryption key. It doesn't work with this one, though. Maybe because it's WIN98? I dunno.

Well, if anyone has any helpful suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks

Suzanne
Can you tell us what hardware version the wireless adapter in the Win98 machine is? It should be either 4.0 or 2.7.The Linksys WMP11 uses the 802.11b wireless mode for communication. While a perfectly good standard, it is old and slow. When you configure a wireless network, you setup which standards the wireless access point will work with. Normally you restrict this just to the ones you need. The less the better.

My guess is, the wireless access point was not setup to accept 802.11b. What wireless modes do the wireless adaptors in the other computers support (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n)?

For that matter, what wireless modes does the AT&T 2-wire support and which ones was it configured to accept? (I'm having trouble locating the documentation for this component.)Which 2Wire product do you have (model name/number)? You need the user guide documentation to setup and maintain its configuration. This is a sample user guide.

Also see:
Wireless Quick Reference
2Wire.com: Support - Search
Support - Downloads

The communication parameters for your wireless network are established at the wireless access point when you setup its configuration. From the sample user guide the major parameters are:
o Channel Number (radio frequency band - 1 through 11)
o SERVICE Set Identifier (SSID), aka "Network Name"
o Authentication Method (WEP-Open, WEP-Shared, WPA-PSK, other?)
o Encryption Key
o Wireless Mode (802.11b/g, 802.11b-only, 802.11g-only, other?)

All wireless network adaptors must match (be configured automatically or manually to) the communication parameters established at the wireless access point.

You never explicitly said how many of your computers are successfully using wireless and what mode they're using (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n).

Solve : cant access the internet?

Answer»

Hi guys,

recently built a new computer myself, and it works totally fine except for one small problem, there is no internet access on it! My internet is definately working on my other machines, and the Ethernet cable is firmly plugged into both my hub, and the back of my computer. The green light is on, so I know for certain that it is indeed correctly positioned.

My motherboard is:

http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=390239&CatId=2947

I ran the network diagnostic tool in internet explorer, and It says

"Windows could not detect any wired or wireless network cards installed on your machine...."

What am I doing wrong, how do I get internet access?

Additional Details
PS

I installed a fresh copy of Windows XP on the motherboard, so it is in effect, as if it had been bought from the factory.

Did you install the driver for it?No....

Where do I get the driver? pardon my ignorance, but driver for what....?

Sorry, total N00B!

Do you mean the card, or?

I'm REFERRING to the driver for the network card, it will be on a disk that came with the card. The driver is the software that interfaces between the hardware and the operating system. There are drivers for many of your onboard COMPONENTS, including the onboard peripheral devices (e.g. network adapter).

Your motherboard appears to have an onboard network adapter (network interface). Did you receive the driver disk for that motherboard? Have you installed the motherboard drivers yet?

If they are not automatically installed for you in the correct order, install the motherboard "chipset" drivers first. Not sure if a reboot is necessary before installing drivers for the other onboard components.

Solve : Router needs to be rebooted before internet works...?

Answer»

Hi guys! Firstly let me say what a great community this is, and I look forward to sicking around.

Okay so before the problem occurs again I better type this out.

I'm sitting in my kitchen on my brand new well equipped HP LAPTOP running XP Pro. The internet is; as far as I'm aware, still working (soon find out I guess).

My setup is as follows.

I have a main computer running XP Pro in my bedroom connected through USB to a Speedstream ADSL modem, which is connected to the phone LINE beside the computer. Running from the Speedstream up into my roof is an ethernet cable. It comes out in the kitchen/common area and is plugged into the DLink Wireless Router I bought from *censored* Smith yesterday.

The main computer is running the internet just fine through my ISP Telstra Bigpond. While installing the router, I had a lot of problems with the PACKAGED software (on CD) so I eventually just said screw it and set it up via logging into 192.168.0.1. Success!

Now, the signal between my laptop and the router is "Excellent" and stays connected wherever I am in or around my house. As far as laptop-router connectivity goes, the two are a great pair. Works really well from what I can tell.

After surfing the internet for between 5 and 30 minutes though, it doesn't work. I've gotten into a routine of logging into 192, clicking reboot router, manually disconnecting from the router in Network Settings. After the reboot I manually connect and, though sometimes it takes a couple of tries, the internet works fine again.

While it's actually working, the speeds are really really good. So I'm puzzled!

Anyone have any IDEAS? Really really look forward to your responses, and please excuse any typos as I still haven't quite gotten used to the laptop keyboard.

Thank you!

//Kiel

Solve : D-Link DIR-655 Setup?

Answer»

I just purchased your DIR-655 and am in the process of setting it up. This is my first router. I diligently followed the setup steps during the Quick Router Setup process. However, the setup process did not go past the Install Router screen. I went through the process of ending the setup program, disconnecting the power adapter and network cable from the router, RECONNECTING my cable modem, and rebooting. I still continued to get the message:
“Router Setup requires your new router to be configured with the default username and password. Follow these steps: Remove your router’s factory defaults (for information on how to remove your new router’s factory defaults consult your router’s documentation). Click Cancel to end the program. Eject the D-Link Quick Router Setup CD. Restart your PC. Reinsert the D-Link Quick Router Setup CD.” The Error Information reads “Error 323: Router Setup requires your new router to be configured with the default username and password. Setup version: 5.0.`2.`5 Model: DIR-655.”

I do not see a specific topic in the User Manual on the CD with instructions on how to remove the new router’s factory defaults. In addition, the setup process will not allow me to go do the Configure Router step.

What must I do to resolve this issue and complete the router setup? Thank you.

My Computer - Dell STUDIO XPS 435MT, Core I7 processor x64, 8GB system memory, OS – Windows Home Premium 64 bit, 600 GB SATA HD, SATA DVD +- DVD RW and DVD ROM, Gigabit Network Connection, Internet Provider – Cablevision-Optinum Cable, Modem – Motorola SBV5120 SURFboard Cable Modem
Router setup consists of plugging the router in to the modem via it's WAN port and plugging a PC into at least one of the LAN ports.

That's it; the disc is really usually just full of a few trialware APPS and the manual for the router in PDF format.

For the DIR-655 (same wireless router I have, I believe, D-Link Xtreme-N) you may also want to set a WPA key, but this is done within the router config pages.

(the router configuration can be accessed by navigating to http://192.168.0.1 in your browser.

I want to be able to set this network up so I can share a wireless printer(a Lexmark 6500 series) and want to be able to share my pictures and music files between them

I talked to a friend of mine and he said I had to set up a work group. He said all the computers work under this work group, Its basically how they all communicate. Is this true and how do I set that up?And if your wondering why I don't have him do it, its because he wants 200 bucks. My budget is real tight, that's why I'm hoping for all of your help.Quote

You have two routers?
You should not use two routers on a small network.
Who is your broadband provider? They should have sold you a router that does everything you need.
New routers use secure encryption and have additional security features. But $330 is too much for home use.

It is by far easier to have the Modem, Router and Wireless on in one package.
So you want a cable modem with wireless router built in.
But in your case that may not be practical. You may have to run a wireless router behind the cable modem.
What model is your net gear G?
You will need some help with the configuration.
But your provider should have a tutorial on their web site.
In general, the router MUST have a different IP than the modem, but both should be in the same sublet. The modem is the gateway and does the DHCP thing. So you have to tell the router to lay off of the DHCP stuff.

Solve : Networking two computers to use one printer??

Answer»

Hello,
I would first like to apologize, as I do realize this topic has been brought up before. I am absolutely stumped and unable to go any further. So here it goes...
I am trying to allow two networked computers use the same printer. Despite having read countless tutorials on the subject, I am still not able to send print jobs to the printer. Here's my situation in more detail...

2 desktop computers in separate rooms (both running windows xp)
COMPUTER #1 is directly connected to the printer by a usb connection
Computer #2 is in a separate room connects via ethernet
1 router, and each computer uses an ethernet cable connected to it (so no wireless connection obviously)
Both computers have networks set up, and shared printing is enabled.

Here are the steps I've used.
1. On computer #1&2, ensure that shared printing is enabled, and accessible through the network
2. On computer #2 added a network printer.
3. Browsed for printer, and located printer (I named it something distinctively different than the generic HP Officejet printer series 3200).
4. Selected printer clicked next.
5. I receive an error message saying that "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost it's connection to the server. For more information, click help."
- I FIND this odd since A) I didn't type the name at all, but selected it from the browse list, and B) The printer in the other room is printing fine and is CURRENTLY online.

Could anyone offer any helpful advice as to why I cant seem to set this all to work? Thanks in advance.

Don't feel bad. What you've done is correct and is supposed to work, but it rarely does. I got this to work once by adding Local Printer instead of network printer. Makes no sense, but it worked. Works a whole lot better if the printer is connected to the router (wired or wireless).1. FIREWALLS. Check firewall settings. Ensure it's configured to permit "File and Printer Sharing". See: printer/file sharing trouble.

Hey guys, thanks for the information. After consulting the links you provided, I was able to solve the problem. Apparently the Antivirus settings on computer 1 were blocking access to the printer. Now I am able use my networked printer properly. Thanks for the help.

Solve : Trying to fix a computer long distance?

Answer»

About 8 years ago my sister and I had a computer problem. My friend tried to walk us through it but couldn't. So he asked for our IP addresses and he was able to take over the computer and try some more advanced things. He ended up fixing the problem. Now my sister is living out of state and she's ASKING me for help with computer. I know whats wrong and how to fix it, HOWEVER I tried walking her through some stuff, but she is very computer illiterate. What do I have to get (hardware or software) to be able to take over her computer my IP address? try teamviewer
You could try CrossLoop. I've only tested it in a classroom environment (within local area network), but it seemed to be easy to setup and use. Been awhile, so details are fuzzy, but you don't need to buy, pay, or setup an account if you don't want to. If it seems like they want you to buy or register, look a little harder AROUND the website; because it's not required.

Not sure how secure it is (since they act as the "middleman" to make the connection). Both parties must download, install, and startup the program. Each party gets a unique ID which they need to EXCHANGE with the other party (e-mail, instant messenger, telephone) because each party needs to request a connection to the other party's ID (thru middleman). Look for the installed help file or online documentation.

My mentor (IT instructor) swears by "LogMeIn", but I believe you need to establish a personal account with them (although there's no charge for the LogMeIn Free version).

If you want secure communications, I believe you need to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. This is something I haven't done yet.

You might want to look at these:

Solve : networking - wifi netwwork?

Answer»

Hi everyone. I am USING a wireless wifi network to acces the interenet. We have 3 laptops at home, each of a different USER. But we have got a download limit of 20GB per month from the ISP. So I want to know that in my home network how can i find out which laptop or user has downloaded how many GB of data till date or per day.You could install a counter that measures and records usage on each machine although theres probly a log of each persons activity if you know where to look...Try researching on Google or wait for one of the more skilled users to give you specifics.
Theres lots of free usage meters on the NET. Again have a look on google for one.
You might also be able to track it through your ISP.HI. Thanks for taking some time to reply me. But the PROBLEM is far more deeper than it looks. Actually i dont have a control over the rest of the laptops and so i cant manually install on them unless its a backdoor trojan(just kidding.) And i wana monitor who is the one who downloads more coz every month our download limit is reached far more earlier than it is supposed to be. So i need to find out if theres a software which i can install on my laptop and monitor every other laptop's internet activity. Again, this isnt with any bad intention, I dont wana spy or anything on them, just wana find out who is the culprit of downloading.Your ISP is a bunch of Haters. Da loco 20Gigs a month!Quote from: Lyniaer on December 01, 2009, 02:33:56 AM

Disregard this useless remark.

Have you spoken to your ISP or even the other people in your HOUSE about the usage?

Workgroup: ARAF.COM
Operating System: WindowsXP

Detail of second network is as follows:

I’m using NETGEAR Router.

Please note, the users of individual network can brows the other PCs as there is LAN available against individual network i.e. in Workgroup ARAF.COM & REN.COM. Being the network Administrator of my company, I just want to connect both workgroups.

Would you please help me, how can I connect two different networks, so that any users of any network can brows the other user’s PC?

Appreciate, if you would come back to me at your earliest.

I would like to know how many routers are being USED and how they're SET up (CONNECTED). Please be as descriptive as possible or maybe use a diagram. I'm just guessing but does your network look like this?:

MODEM -> ROUTER A - |
| - Router C - REN Computers

Solve : Providing Internet Access in a Domain environment (ISA/proxy)?

Answer»

Hi,

I am hoping someone can help me out with a bit of explanation. I work in a typical enterprise domain environment, and it's often SAID that internet access is either "provided by a proxy server" or " you connect directly to the internet". ISA servers are also mentioned. I'm a bit confused about this.

From reading up on ISA servers, it appears they can basically act as 2 funtions, a Web proxy (forward/reverse) or a Firewall (back-end or front-end). Does "CONNECTING directly to the internet" still involve the ISA, just that it MEANS it's not being used as a proxy, just as a firewall (i.e. just forwarding the ip packets to the internet)? Also, we use a configuration script in Internet Explorer which I think points to an ISA proxy array. But if we don't have that script there, then internet is not provided. Why wouldn't my PC just bypass the web proxy servers and go directly to the internet if I remove the script? Would there be some sort of rule set up so that PC's HAVE to use a proxy to get internet access?

Thirdly, do ALL applications use proxy servers for internet access e.g. citrix ICA clients, MSN Messenger, FTP clients? So if you just put the proxy settings in IE, then all other apps will use these? Or will some connect directly to the internet itself.

I know probably each configuration is different, but if anyone can offer any general principles of explanation that would be appreciated!
Found a bit of an answer from the guys at work: a proxy server provides internet access, if you don't have a proxy CONFIGURED, you don't get internet access.

Not sure about all the other apps I mentioned thought, whether they all use the proxy or if a proxy is only for http traffic i.e. Internet Explorer etc, so other protocols/apps would go directly to the internet (FTP clients, citrix ISA client etc). I'm sure I'll find out sometime...

Solve : Help! Lost internet connection!?

Answer»

My daughter has a laptop (Dell Inspirion) with Vista HP and IE 7, which she uses for college. She can connect via wireless router to
internet at home and at college. At home she can connect to the internet, but at college IE refuses connect to the internet! Although
it did do three weeks ago! I have restored System Restore to when she used to be able to connect at college but still no connection! Now
the signal strength to her college wireless router shows as strong, but IE cannot connect to the internet.

Any helpful suggestions would be most grateful. Did she try another browser, like Firefox? This is a game Vista enjoys playing. Check in the Network and Sharing Center. If there's a big, red X between the router and the Globe, click the X and let windows "Diagnose" the problem. My mother's laptop with Vista LOVED to do this and clicking on that X yields no diagnostic "results" but it gets a connection immediately after doing so anyway.

It's a common MALFUNCTION with Vista and Wireless and not even Microsoft knows what the issue is.

A clue to Vista's game-playing treachery is while viewing the Network and Sharing Center it'll CONSISTENTLY show where the Router's name is supposed to be "Identifying..." It 'may' go away, but comes right back a few seconds later anyhow.

Visit Windows Update and download any and all updates that are available in the rare instance that they may have it resolved. Before we start blaming Vista for the problem has any one checked if the college has changed anything on their end that would prevent her from connecting?

Keep in mind that just because she has a connection to the router doesn't automatically MEAN the internet at the college is working. Thanks to everyone for their comments. I am trying to contact the IT department at the college to pass on your comments and resolve this issue

To my thinking it must be an issue of communication between the laptop and the college router! But what Quote from: mroilfield on December 01, 2009, 02:55:42 AM

You are so right the problem was with the college router connection and nothing more.

Solve : iPod Touch > Router > Computer (as WAN) > Internet?

Answer»

I have LOOKED on Google for HOURs looking for a good tutorial, but I cannot seem to FIND the right kind of help. What I need to get done is for my iPod Touch to connect to internet through my Computer, which is connected to the internet through an internal dial up modem. (AOL dynamic IP address)

I don't need feedback telling me: "Why don't you just switch?" or "Why do you WANT to share a dial up connection" IT DOESN'T HELP. I need help.

I know my WAY around the wireless router setup and how to configure settings, but I am truly unsure what settings to change. My iPod Touch connects to my router just fine, but where do I go from there?

I have tried everything I have READ, regardless if it was right or wrong, and I am still unable to successfully do this. I can tell you that I have tried connecting the Ethernet cable from the WAN port to the LAN port on my computer, but I am utterly clueless on what to do. I have heard about bridging.. but I do not understand it exactly.

I would prefer if you guys write up your own tutorial instead of giving me a link to a tutorial.. IT NEVER WORKS.

Thanks for your help. Quick question. Are you trying to connect the ITouch to the internet? If so, you've tried a Wireless Router?
What exactly are you trying to do?

Quote

My iPod Touch connects to my router just fine, but where do I go from there?
Again, what do you mean? Are you looking for a way to use the internet after you're connected?

Perhaps a link to the tutorial(s) so we have an idea of what's up?Yes, I want it to connect to the Internet.. but through my computer. Now, I figured: There is only one way to do this and it is to use a wireless router. I am using a wireless router..

I basically want my WiFi device (the iPod Touch) to connect to the router and surf the internet.
The way my computer is connected to the internet is through Dial-up.. (Internal PCI Modem)Bump.

Come on people, I need some help!
How can I make this work?

iPod > Wireless Router > My Computer > Internet
(When 'My Computer' is connected to the Internet without the router's help.)Chill. we don't offer 24 hour service here.

So you're connected to the wireless router, right? Do you not have any web browsing applications?Safari on my iPod can browse the web fine. So does IE on my PC.
Sorry if I sounded rude, but I am just determined to get this to work.

I just don't excactly know how the whole IP/Gateway thing works.
I want to make my iPod connect to my wireless router, (which I already have done) but connect it to the internet through my computer. My computer is already connected to the internet through dial-up.

The router itself does not connect to the internet.. my computer does, I want my computer to act as the WAN.. or my dial-up connection to act as the WAN. But I can't directly connect my modem to the router because it is only a PCI modem..have u thought of buying a modem from walmart the ones with the phone jack on one end and a miniport on the other end and hook the wireless router to modem and the modem dials out to the internet. Then the wireless router has internet.
I had this problem too but I found a way using my computers internet and connecting a cg814wg modem by usb so I can use wifi on my ipod touch. It works...its not entirely fast and stable but 90% of the time its fine. Heres what I did:
Connected the modem by usb to my computer
In Networks connections it should say you have another connection.
Make sure you create another password for your usb modem.

Go to properties of the already connected internet then advanced.
Check the "Allow networks users to connect through this computer's internet connection"

When you search on your ipod for wifi the name of your modem should appear.

Worked for me.

Solve : Looking for a new Wireless Router (for Home Use).?

Answer»

Hey Guys,

My Netgear Wireless Router just died on me (Bummer.. ).

Now, I'm looking for a solid replacement, that won't die on me after a year like my Netgear did.
It has to be G and MUST go up to 108 mbps.

Im looking for the best price vs quality on this. (The lowest price without affecting performance).

I appreciate all help/suggestions.
-NNJZ
(FORMERLY known as Image).I like my Netgear.....its about 4 years old without any trouble.

You can look at Linksys....CISCO owns them and they have a pretty good router.

I recommend a wireless N router since it will give you over 108 Megabits (At least 150 Megabits).
Some good ones are http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_p_72_0?rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3Arouter%2Cn%3A%21493964%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A172504%2Cn%3A300189%2Cp_n_feature_three_browse-bin%3A405582011%2Cp_72%3A1248879011&bbn=300189&sort=price&keywords=router&ie=UTF8&qid=1260045777&rnid=1248877011.No sarcasm intended.
It just does not matter much.
If you pay $39 for a router and it lasts a year, that's not bad.
In just one year there will be something newer and BETTER anyway.
Technology is now overcome with CONSUMERISM. The stuff either has to wear out or become outdated. And people want the lowest price possible.

Solve : wifi no card?

Answer»

my computer DOESNOT have a wireless card can i get one to put in to a usb socketYes, cheap as chips, plug and play, you will need the Wireless key that CAME with your Router, Yes, but you need to ensure it's compatible with whatever wireless adaptor or access point it will connect to. BASICALLY talking about the wireless mode(s) each end of the connection will support (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n).Absolutely.

There are many to choose from and they are not too expensive.

Here is a list of some AVAILABLE on Amazon.com: HTTP://bit.ly/4G29CY

As the previous poster mentioned, compare the wireless mode of the card to that of your wireless router - e.g. 802.11g.

If you want to read more in depth about the various wireless modes, here is a good entry in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11

Here is a very useful comparison chart that mentions the interoperability of the protocols: http://bit.ly/6G3Wn7
