Solve : I've tried everything....Can't figure out?

Answer»

Hi guys...help needed.
In my home / office I have a desktop pc windows xp home sp2 and i have an acer aspire ONE netbook windows xp home sp3......the desktop is wired to my router (wired and wireless) provided by verizon...the laptop i use around the house wireless...i have no problem connecting to internet on either one......
My problem is that i want to connect to each other. For instance if i am using the netbook to do work and want to send the files to my desktop i cant.
I have TRIED setting up the network and using the wizard and all that but to no avail. It looks like the problem might be the laptop. On the desktop i see my network places and all that but on the netbook i dont. When i click start menu there is no "my network places" listed as it does on the desktop.
I have run the wizard several times also. Is this a problem because one is wired and one is wireless?
I need some serious guidance.......thanks Well, I hope you're a reader. Start with the "Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing..." reference:

Setting up your network - Windows XP

File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows

Troubleshooting Computer Browsing on SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows

well, im about to give up but i dont want to......i've been reading those and trying to figure out but...not.
i cant get my netbook to see the other computer....i cant even see 'my network places' on the netbook.......any other suggestions? 1. Ping. Use the "ping" command within a "Command Prompt" window to test connectivity between the two computers (both logical and physical). From each computer, ping the other; both by its "IP address" and "computer name". Report the results. For example:
a. ping 192.168.0.5
b. ping PeggySue

2. Command Prompt. To get a Command Prompt window (within Windows XP):
a. Start
b. Run
c. Type "cmd" without quotes, select OK

3. Your IP Address. Use the "ipconfig" command within a "Command Prompt" window to view your IP address (for the network interface of the computer you're on).
a. ipconfig

4. Your Computer Name. Use the "ipconfig" command within a "Command Prompt" window to view your computer's host name. From the reported "Host Name" string, just use the portion from left side to the first period. For example:
a. ipconfig /all |more

If host name string reported is "PeggySue.sf.cox.net", you may just use "PeggySue".ok, so i was able to ping from desktop to wireless netbook and got the reply.....but no replies when pinging from netbook to desktop (timed Out) 1. Firewalls.
a. Are there "active" firewalls on either of those computers (possibly the desktop)?
b. If so, which firewall (Windows Firewall, something else)?

2. Reference:
Troubleshooting Connectivity Problems on Windows Networks (Part 1)Er, you mean like Zonealarm

ok, shut that off and now i can ping the desktop from netbook, but still no 'network places icon in the start taskbar, and if i manually navigate to that folder it is EMPTY.......yet if i do that on the desktop i will have 'network places' in the start taskbar and when opened it SHOWS my shared folders for that pc only1. Laptop. To share files in both directions between laptop and desktop, ensure the laptop is setup as both a "client" and "server".
a. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.

b. Click the connection that is connected to your home network, and then, in the Tasks pane, click Change settings of this connection.

c. In the properties of the network connection, under This connection uses the following items, verify that the Client for Microsoft Networks component is installed and enabled (the checkbox is checked).

d. In the properties of the network connection, under This connection uses the following items, verify that the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks component is installed and enabled (the checkbox is checked).

2. Desktop. Likewise for the desktop.

3. Using Start-Run.
a. The easiest way to make a connection to a shared folder is by doing the following:
(1) Click Start, and then click Run.
(2) In Open, type \\ComputerName\ShareName (in which ComputerName is the name of the computer sharing the folder and ShareName is the name of the share when the folder was shared), and then PRESS ENTER.

For example, to open the share named STUFF on the computer named HOMESRV, you would type \\HOMESRV\STUFF. You can use upper or lowercase letters for the computer and share names. If the share name contains spaces, enclose the entire \\ComputerName\ShareName in quotes. For example, to open the Shared Documents share on the computer named MOMSPC, you would type "\\MOMSPC\Shared Documents".

b. If you don't remember the name of the share, you can do the following:
(1) Click Start, and then click Run.
(2) In Open, type \\ComputerName and then press ENTER.

The window that is displayed contains the file and printer shares of the specified computer.awesome.......did all that and after a little tinkering got it to work....the only problem is that for me to access desktop from netbook the zonealarm firewall has to be off.......is there a workaround for that?Add desktop IP to ZoneAlarm Trusted Zones.ok, tried that...but i still cant access until i turn off internet zone security....dont understand why thoughQuote from: Computer_Commando on December 07, 2009, 02:34:41 PM

Add desktop IP to ZoneAlarm Trusted Zones.

Which computer has the ZoneAlarm software on it? Which ZoneAlarm product and version... maybe there's a user guide?

If ZoneAlarm is on the desktop computer, I'd think you'd be adding the "laptop IP" to its trusted zone.Quote from: dahlarbear on December 07, 2009, 05:26:14 PM
...If ZoneAlarm is on the desktop computer, I'd think you'd be adding the "laptop IP" to its trusted zone...
You're correct, my mistake, it's what I meant to say. I stopped using ZoneAlarm about 8 months ago, so it's all from memory. There we go!
Guys, thank you both for your time and knowledge.
Have a great day!

Solve : To connect two different networks by Router?

Answer»

Dear Sir

I would LIKE to connect two different networks within office through Router.

Detail of first network is as follows:
IP series: 192.168.0.2/192.168.0.3/192.168.0.4 and so on
Workgroup: ARAF.COM
Operating System: WindowsXP

Detail of second network is as follows:
IP series: 192.168.6.2/192.168.6.3/192.168.6.4 and so on
Workgroup: REN.COM
Operating System: WindowsXP

I’m USING NETGEAR Router.

Please note, the users of individual network can brows the other PCs as there is LAN available against individual network i.e. in Workgroup ARAF.COM & REN.COM. Being the network Administrator of my company, I just want to connect both workgroups.

Would you please help me, how can I connect two different networks, so that any users of any network can brows the other user’s PC?

Further query, please come back to me at your earliest.

Regards
Pervez
Well, I know WINDOWS will only allow one homegroup, ie "mshome", one IP address, one connection, per machine - it would be easier to make the two networks into one network - much easier. Quote from: talorababu on November 30, 2009, 08:21:55 AM

I would like to connect two different networks within office through Router.

I don't know about a "Router", but I believe a hardware or software "Bridge" would accomplish your goal if you don't mind combining the two SUBNETS into one.

See:
Setting Up Network Bridge in Windows XP
Wikipedia - Network bridge

Computer Browsing for SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows
Troubleshooting Computer Browsing on SOHO Networks with Microsoft WindowsIf the two networks are in the same office, why were they put on two different subnets in the first place?

In any case, yes, a bridge would do what you want. A router could be used this way if it has an option to change its mode to "bridge mode." Otherwise, one subnet could see the other but not vice versa without disabling NAT and modifying the routing tables...

Solve : wireless problem??

Answer»

Last night I was going on the internet just fine. Then I saw my son press the button to shut down the computer. When I turned the comp back on again, it wouldn't connect to the internet. It oddly doesn't detect any WIRELESS networks. I have a wireless router SET up on my desktop pc, and it APPEARS to be working just fine because at the same time, my laptop computer is able to connect to my home network and connect to the internet just fine. I've tried all the vista diagnostic tools on my desktop and none of them helped. what can i do? First step is to reset the router and the modem (disconnect both from AC power for half a minute, the connect the modem and then the router a minute later). I'm assuming you don't shut down the system by pressing the power button as a normal practice, CORRECT?NOPE, I always shut down through the start menu.

Ok i reset them the way you asked. it still doesn't detect a wireless network

Solve : Changed hard drives, no signal?

Answer»

A D Link router was installed on computer one. A D Link USB adapter was installed on computer two. No signal problems Computer two was only a P3. we replaced it with a newer but not new P4. All computers running XP PRO. We removed the hard drive from the P3 as it was larger and it had programs we wanted to access but MS won't accept the activation request. We installed that hard drive in the newer P4. After installing the needed drivers, the computer is working just fine. HOWEVER now what is computer two can not pick up a wireless signal. Dlink driver installed As a test I installed a wireless card. That also installs with no problem but scans and sees no signal. Is there a change in windows itself that I have to make in order for this to work? There is an icon in control panel for wireless but not sure if there are changes I need to make there. Quote

MS won't accept the activation request
How did you resolve this issue? The old P3 was also a different motherboard and has a different chip set, - Right? The activation by MS is a non problem using the current hard drive (removed from the P3) It was a problem when I attempted to install it in the P4 machine using the MS OFFICE cd.

The hard drive is the same one that "WAS" working with the wireless while in the P3 pc. Somehow transferring it into the P4 pc has lost its ability to pick up a signal.Quote
The hard drive is the same one that "WAS" working with the wireless while in the P3 pc. Somehow transferring it into the P4 pc has lost its ability to pick up a signal.

Your P3 machine works on wireless. The P4 does not.
The hard drive did not change,
Windows XP did not change,
The wireless device did not change.
The CPU changed.
The motherboard changed.
Windows Networking is not hardware independent.

Examples:
1. A change in a Video card can stop a network card.
2. A change in motherboard chip set can stop USB service.
3. A change in chip set stops the audio.
4. A change in CPU will cause drivers to not work right.

The wireless drives can not work right if the chip set is not right. The device manager may not even show yellow flags.

The best choice is to put it back the way it was.
Unless you are doing an in-depth study of how to modify a working system.

However, It is possible to make it work. And not hard. Just time-consuming.. But before anyone can help you with that, you need to explain how you got the XP system to work on a different motherboard. Did you do a new, clean install of XP on the drive? Or did you do a repair install of XP? Which XP SP2? SP3? OEM? Retail? Did you get the updates?
The P3 was an old IBM running XP PRO SP3. I retrieved the hard drive from the IBM and installed it into the Dell P4. I left the OS the same having updated the OS the day before. After the install, I added the necessary drivers for the Dell to function (video, sound, ethernet). Computer boots normally and functions correctly except for the wireless which can no longer pick up a signal. The router is connected to the main computer on an upper floor. I had to switch hard drives between the Dell and IBM to retain the installed SOFTWARE. I did contact D Link and they said that their wireless routers are universal and will work with any system. All the more confusing.

Solve : How to maximuze use of this Linux box on our future network?

Answer»

I am currently doing volunteer work to help start off the Cyber Lab here at my college. Since we just started, we do not have much funding yet so we are making do with donated items until we get some funding. The head (one of my professors) of the lab donated a lot of old PENTIUM 2 and Pentium 3 boxes to the lab and I have been looking into a SPECIFIC one. It has TWO 350MHz Pentium 2 processors, 384MB of RAM and four open PCI ports as well as on-board ethernet.

The network here is mainly going to be used for controlled hacking. We will have three main network connections. One being our own intranet (for test hacking and forensics labs), one being the network that we would use to connect to for COMPETITIONS (hacking between us and whomever is competing against us), and then finally a connection to our school network (so we can use the school resources if need be.).

Currently, this system is fitted with Fedora 9 SMP. I was looking for some insight as to how I could maximize the use of this box for use in the network. A router? If so, what kind of routing services? Our network will consist of about 18-23 computers when everything is said and done.

My currently knowledge with Linux itself is not very high however I took a course this semester with UNIX so I have a decent baseline of knowledge with TERMINAL and CLI type deals. I don't mind doing research on how to configure specifics with the network adapters if someone has something specific in mind for this.

If you would like any more specs of the computer or the future network, post up the questions.

Solve : cable modems?

Answer»

Comcast is the ISP / Presently using a RCA DCM425 cable modem using a USB connector to Dell E 520 desk top.
Got tired of PAYING ever increasing modem rental fees to Comcast and attempted to upgrade.
Purchased a Motorola SB6120 modem ( It is a Comcast Compatible device) and it only has ethernet connections.
Hooked up as per directions but unable to connect to internet get "error105 server not found message"
Comcast help desk SHOWS no modem installed.
Device manager will show the original cable modem (RCA) connected through the USB port, but will not show the Motorola modem connected via the ethernet port, and also ISATAP #7 indicates not working properly due driver problem. Went back to the original install an all OK.
Could I use an ethernet to USB adaptor or something else?
Thanking all in advance for any help or guidance.
JoeThe MAC address needs to be REGISTERED and recognized by your ISP.Quote from: Allan on January 15, 2011, 10:34:26 AM

The MAC address needs to be registered and recognized by your ISP.

You may be able to use your own modem with Comcast. Call their customer services. Once you have got your modem registered with Comcast check your bill regularly to see they don't bill you for the rental (that is assuming they will even let you - if you have CDV service - Digital Voice - you have to use their modem, I think because they are liable for your 911 service) and also beware because if a service call is placed, the first thing they will demand is that you swap out the modem - as a troubleshooting pre-requisite prior to sending a technician out - or if they find the modem is bad, and its not theirs, you get charged for the call - not cheap, either. One way around that would be to buy two modems and keep one as a spare.
Thank you for replies but the MAC address for the Motorola modem was registered and ACCEPTED by comcast
JoeMotorola 6120 must use ethernet. Why must you use USB?You can use your own modem with Comcast. I'm staring at one now, and it's a Motorola.UPDATE
When I open device manager / neither the RCA or Motorola modem are recognized when connected by ethernet cables.
The RCA modem has both ethernet and USB port but it is recognized only when connected via USB cable.
That would indicate a problem with my Dell E520 ethernet port.
How do I T/S or repair?
Thanking all In advance.
JoeQuote from: joelevelis on January 16, 2011, 11:13:55 AM
When I open device manager / neither the RCA or Motorola modem are recognized when connected by ethernet cables.

This is normal. When connected by ethernet cable a cable or DSL modem is seen by Windows as a LAN (Local Area Network). It is only when the modem is connected by a USB cable that it will show up in Device Manager. Things to consider are

1. Whether you have used the correct Ethernet cable. There are two sorts of ethernet twisted-pair cable with 8-pin RJ45 connectors at both ends:

(a) straight-through: where each pin is connected to the same pin at the other end;
(b) cross-over: where pins (1,2) are connected to (3,6) at the other end, and vice-versa.

For a normal stand-alone cable modem connecting to a normal ethernet NIC in a PC, you need a straight-through cable, because cable modem RJ45 sockets are normally wired as if they were hub sockets. Many cable modems are sold with an appropriate cable provided in the box. You can tell whether you have the correct cable because, when both cable modem and PC are powered up and operational, there should be LINK lights (usually green LEDs) lit beside the RJ45 sockets at both ends.

2. Whether your network settings are correct

Review this page

http://www.acmeteks.com/comcast.html

3. If your network adapter drivers are properly installed.

These 2 statements are inconsistent.

The second one was made 30 minutes after the first; maybe, during that time, he was on the phone to Comcast? Maybe if he had written "the MAC address for the Motorola modem has now been registered and accepted by comcast..." it would have been clearer, but, hey, this ain't English class. Perhaps he will clarify?

Solve : PLZ REPLY HOW TO CONNECT A PC TO A LAPTOP??

Answer»
How to connect a PC with a DSL modem connection to a laptop with a wireless card, without a router. PLEASE explain step by step.

OS is windows XP
Thanks for UR help and time in advance
1. System Requirements:
a. Do both the PC (desktop?) and laptop need "Internet" access?
b. Why do you want to connect them together?
(1) To share files and/or printers between the PC and laptop?
(2) To share an internet connection?

2. What resources do you have?
a. DSL modem
b. Home router
c. Switch
d. Hub
e. "crossover" ethernet cable

3. PC Configuration:
a. Does it connect directly to DSL modem?
b. If YES, using an "ethernet" or "USB" connection?
c. If no, how does it access DSL modem?
d. Does it have a "wired" ethernet port (network adaptor)?
e. Does it have a "wireless" network adaptor?
f. Does it have a "USB" port?

4. Laptop Configuration:
a. Does laptop have a "wired" ethernet port (network adaptor)?
b. Does it have a "USB" port?
I hope i could reply well to the questions.

1. System Requirements:
a. yes both desktop and laptop need "Internet" access.
b. Why do you want to connect them together?

(2) To share an internet connection?

2. What resources do you have?
a. DSL modem
DSL modem external to the computer and is wired to the computer's Ethernet port
Its AZTECH DSL605EU
3. PC Configuration:
a. it connect directly to DSL modem
b. If yes, using an "ethernet" connection
f. lt has "USB" port.

4. Laptop Configuration:

b. it have a "USB" port
it has a wirless card NETWEAR

I recommend you buy a router.
It lets you share files and internet.
See http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_n_0?rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3Arouter%2Cn%3A%21493964%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A172504%2Cn%3A300189&bbn=172504&sort=price&keywords=router&ie=UTF8&qid=1260045777&rnid=172504 for one.1. Router. A wireless home router (with four wired ethernet local area network (LAN) ports) is your "best" option despite your search for alternative methods. It permits:
a. Your LAN to share a "single" public IP address for Internet access.
b. Isolates (secures) your LAN behind hardware firewall included in most home routers.
c. Usually has four wired ethernet ports for LAN.
d. Provides "wireless" access to your LAN.
e. BRIDGES your "wireless" nodes to "wired" nodes of your LAN.

2. Hub or Switch. If your ISP will provide or lease additional public IP addresses (Internet) to you, you could place a "hub" or "switch" between the DSL modem and your computers. Does the laptop not have a "wired" ethernet connector?

3. Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Without a "router" or "MULTIPLE" public IP addresses issued by your ISP, the computer connected to the DSL modem needs to share its Internet connection. You can do this using the provided Microsoft ICS or other third party software, but you still have to connect the laptop to desktop host. You might do this by:
a. Adding USB wireless adaptor to desktop.
b. Adding second "wired" ethernet adaptor to desktop if laptop already has "wired" ethernet adaptor (you only said it has "wireless" card) and an ethernet "crossover" cable.
c. Using "firewire" cable with compatible connectors for desktop and laptop firewire ports (they may require different physical connectors). Assumes both computers have firewire ports (and an IEEE-1394 network adaptor built-in?).
d. Using special USB "bridge" cable with additional networking software. (Must not use regular USB cable or you could electrically damage both computers).

Solve : Weird Issue with Website?

Answer»

Yesterday I clicked on a link to visit a website. The website was called JustAsk.com. They offered to answer a legal question for free. So I typed in a question and submitted it. They asked for more info, wanted me to pick whether the question was urgent, and then quoted a price for the answer. I decided not to pursue it, and tried to close the browser window. I got a pop up window asking if I was sure I wanted to quit, yada yada. The options offered were to click cancel or OK, which didn't make sense, since clicking either choice, or the little CROSS in the corner of the pop up window only made the window pop up again. Long story short, I tried to close the entire browser, but this little window kept popping up and making it impossible to leave. I had to shut the computer down. Alas, I had forgotten that I opted to have Firefox remember my tabs. When I rebooted, there they were again! This time when I tried to restart my computer, I got a message from Windows, saying that a program was trying to prevent me shutting down my own computer. Fortunately it offered me an option to shut down ANYWAY. I had to do a complete cleaning of history, cache, cookies etc to get rid of these guys.

My questions are, what did they do, how did they do it, and is it legal? And if it isn't, how can I report them?Yes, it's legal. It's more than likely just a simple JavaScript script code. Have you scanned with your antivirus? Run a scan with Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) also to be sure.

The next time you open Firefox and it pops up, open Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL), click Processes tab, scroll down to Firefox.exe, right click and select End Process. Next time you open Firefox it should say "The last time Firefox was closed"....and will give you the option to start new session.

You could also add a new hosts entry for the site. See here for info (http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/hosts.htm).That type of pop up behavior has been going on since the beginning of the web. And in my experience, sites that do that type of thing are not reputable and should be avoided. You should be glad you didn't pay for legal advice at that site.I also HIGHLY recommend NoScript:
http://noscript.net/getitAdblock plus is good at these things to. I FIND noscript is too indiscriminate and stops a lot of legitimate sites from working. That's because it blocks all JavaScript by default when enabled, allowing you to then DECIDE what should be accepted. It basically works like any decent firewall does.

Solve : XBOX 360 won't detect Airport Extreme?

Answer»

I have a Westell DSL modem connected to my AIRPORT Extreme. I have 3 computers connected to the internet wirelessly via the AirPort. However, upon hardwiring my XBOX 360 to the AirPort's single ethernet port, the 360 does not recognize that there is anything plugged into the AirPort. I've checked that it's not a bad ethernet CABLE, everything is hooked up right, i forwarded all of the right ports to my 360s static IP, which is outside of the airport's DHCP range. Still, when trying to access my "Test Network" page on my XBOX, it won't give you an option to choose "WIRED Connection". It says "To use a wired Internet connection, make sure an Ethernet cable is connected to both your console and your router or modem."
You said the static IP is outside of the DHCP range?

Give the xbox a static IP that IS with-in the routers DHCP range.

Solve : Someone Got In My System Last Night.?

Answer»

Hello all,

Just as the title states, I woke up this MORNING to find my servers computer logged off, and there was a SECOND adminitstrator account there named "cooldude" that was password protected.
After much turmoil trying to figure out how to delete it, since the traditional "remove user" method in control panel didnt work, I used the command line: Code: [Select]net user cooldude /delete
And it worked, but they will probably be back tonight.

I checked my ftp logs and no one entered through there.

I wrote a program that they might have stolen also.

How do I stop this from happening?

I will gladly supply more information, please help me.Turn off your system when you go to bed. What part of apache server is not clear?have you scanned for malware/viruses on the server? Only way to add a user to PC that I know of would be if they had managed to get a backdoor remote console or something installed.Well I run symantec corporate edition and it scans every day, found nothing.

I am assuming they might have used a console command to add the account versus having remote desktop capabilities.what are you using for a firewall?

are we referring to the administrator account of the computer itself or apache? And which console do you mean? some sort of remotely accessible console ability via with apache?I am referring to the desktop users, the ones you login to windows with. There was a second Administrator account.

As far as the console, I was just making a STIPULATION as how I might have been done. I truly have no idea how this could have been done.1) Quote from: Spoiler on December 04, 2009, 10:12:34 AM

3) Do you have any remote services enabled? (i.e.: Remote Desktop Connection, NetMeeting, etc.)

4) Are you using any simple password for admin account? Anything less than 6 or so characters that does NOT vary between three of the following: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols is going to get cracked by dictionary or Brute Force.

5) Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware in addition to Symantec.

6) Enable logging of your Windows accounts:

Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc.

Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Audit Policies.

Change the following to "Enabled":
- Audit Account Logon Events (Success and Failure)
- Audit Logon Events (Success and Failure)
- Audit Privilege Use (Success and Failure) (useful for when some schmuck decides to make themselves admin and lock out the real admin)

Check dem security logs in the Event Viewer from now on after doing this.

...and most importantly...

7) For ANY security breach, RENAME your ADMIN account and CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD!!! Otherwise, you're just asking to be hacked again...

1)Comodo x64 Edition

2)I have http port 80 open for my sites, ports 27017,27030,28015,29015,30015, open for game servers, and 21 is open for the ftp use, with filezilla's "security". It logs any attempts, nothing there that's related, just the usual schmucks who get get auto-banned after a few bad attempts

3)Teamviewer v5 is the only remote connection that I have...or know about.

4)Yes......Changed it.. thx!

5)Doing so.

6)Done.

7)Where can I change that at? User accounts does not have that option.

I apologize for my late response I'm NEARING finals...

I greatly appreciate your help. For #7, Start -> Control Panel (settings -> Control Panel if using Classic Start Menu) -> Administrative Tools (change to classic control panel first) -> Computer Management -> Local Users and Groups -> Users -> right-click the admin account, left-click rename. Right-click the account again -> left-click Reset Password (if you haven't already). Restart your computer so the settings will take effect.

Solve : QWest DSL service and speed?

Answer»

I have QWEST DSL Platinum (for several years)which is listed as up to 7M. I ran speedtest and came in about 2.6M on download. My 2Wire gateway/modem setup shows 3.2M in the setup (first time I ever looked at it). I used the setup to turn the power up from 25% to max trying to get service to one of my outbuildings.
Cable is not an option, I'm checking into Clear Wire but so far the signal doesn't look too promising.

Is the 2Wire setup just showing what's available or is it setting my speed and if so can I change it (I'm paying for 7M) ? Can I check this or am I stuck with asking QWest tech support?

I have two telephone lines onto our property and am trying to determine if adding a second DSL service will give me any more capacity. Would a second service give me any more speed and capacity for more users or would I still be sharing the same capacity I currently have available?

Thanks,
SteveUnlike cable, which is a shared network, DSL is unshared. So, theoretically, a 2nd DSL line will double your bandwidth, ASSUMING the MAINLINE to the property is in good condition. The very nature of coaxial cable will always be faster (more bandwidth) than UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair). DSL is also distance limited (15000ft) to the Central Office, unless there is a fiber-optic transition in between.

I've used a 2Wire modem only once & don't remember EVERYTHING about it. Speedtest of 2.6Mb on 3.2Mb setup sounds right. It's POSSIBLE that the setup need to be reconfigured to what you're paying for. You should contact your ISP.

Solve : Default gateway?

Answer»

I have a friend who has set up a new wireless/modem which ip address is 192.168.1.1 and when you go command run cmd and put in ipconfig /all the DEFAULT gateway shows up 269 .254.40.90 which is the same as the ip address. Should it not show as 192.168.1.1 being the default gateway.
They do not have a STATIC IP address. The computer that I am suing to send this message is also on a home network and when I check the ipconfig the default gateway shows the IP address of the modem. Any ideas would be a great help. Ojas
1. Modem. Find the user guide for the make and model number of the equipment. There should be setup and configuration information available. I'm not sure whether we're talking about a modem, wireless access point, router, switch; or all of those components integrated into one box. This may be because I'm not familiar with "wireless" modems. My experience is with a "wireless" home router.

2. Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA). I suspect you misread or MISTYPED the gateway address of "269.254.40.90". You're probably GETTING addresses within the APIPA range of "169.254.x.x". That would suggest their computer is configured to "Obtain an IP address automatically", but is unable to get TCP/IP configuration information from a DHCP server either because it's unable to find one, or the DHCP server is unable to comply with the REQUEST. At this point Windows may assign itself an IP address from the APIPA range. Your friend may set the TCP/IP configuration information manually or enable the local DHCP server within their home router (modem?).

3. Enable "DHCP Server". Have your friend locate and enable the "DHCP Server" capability for their local area network. For my home network, it is located among the web configuration pages of my wireless home router which is accessed by its local configuration IP address; e.g. "192.168.1.1".

Yes sorry it is 10 port switch not as I said switcher.

Not asking why I have to. Someone has already done that what I am asking why is not PLUGGED directly into the switch The switch is not made to handle network services like DHCP or DNS.....

Your computer can handle this when connected to your modem. What most people do is to buy a router. You then plug the modem into the router and your computer into the back of the router. The back area of the router is a switch. The front area of the router is made to get the SETTINGS from your modem and pass them to the switch.

Solve : huge ping...?

Answer»

since I upgraded to windows 7 I was suffering from a bad PING, even when (dual) booting from vista it didn't have this.
my mac didn't have this either.

so I started changing the network (router) settings a bit and then the ping on every machine went high.
resetting it helps, but only for a couple of minutes, I even tried resetting all the settings, but nothing helped.
my router is a sweex LW055 and I have tried upgrading the firmware, but that didn't even work (it just didn't upgrade, although it said it did)

also, first it also happened locally, but now it only HAPPENS externally
my xbox 360 is suffering from this too.
on my windows 7 pc it's always high, but on the other computers its good when no other computers are on.1. Please define the following terms:

it varies from about 200 to 5000

also, I purchased a new router, all the other computers are fast now, but the windows 7 pc is still slow, I tried doing it wired now but that didn't help much either (still pings of over 100)Have you checked with your ISP to ensure everything is working as intended down their end?Quote from: Geriden on December 23, 2009, 06:03:49 AM
Have you checked with your ISP to ensure everything is working as intended down their end?

no, but let me start over again.
I have this setup with 1 partition for vista and 1 partition for windows 7.
I also have a macbook and my sister has another laptop (vista).
all those computers have good ping, except for when I boot into windows 7, so its not a problem with the ISP and neither is it a hardware problem.great, I just noticed its slow on every computer here
I hate my ISP, I just spend $50 on a router... its nothing faster!
and I just can't game with this type of connection!Well you could always go back to appreciating the beauty and natural rhythms of planet earth...a 50$ router is cheat as far as ROUTERS go.... mine was almost 200$...

While this may not relate to the error message "tv_configMgrERR31", it doesn't appear you meet the "recommended minimum hardware requirements" to run "Windows Vista Business". You may be pushing the envelope. Just an observation. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919183.

Although you may meet the "minimum supported system requirements". Good luck with that. See https://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/system-requirements.aspx

Recommendation: Add more memory (or run an operating system that has lower hardware demands).Quote from: corkball on December 22, 2009, 06:24:32 AM

This may be a nonproblem. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932520/en-us.

Since I don't have access to "Vista Business" operating system, best I can do is point you to google list of others reporting similar error message. See http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Windows+Vista+Business+%22tv_configMgrERR31%22&start=0&sa=Nthanks for your replies i have read the numerous quotes re this problem on google and as you say it may be a non problem.

i have thought of reinstalling vista my only query on this is why i need to back up my files prior to this as i only use the pc for emailing and purchasing

1. Backup Data. You need to backup your personal "data" files or any data you can't afford to lose. Generally you can reload the operating system and application programs from their setup CD/DVDs (or download installation files from Internet).

Quote from: corkball on December 23, 2009, 03:45:32 AM
the fact remains that my pc is very slow i did have thoughts of system restore but the restore points shown are recent and ideally i would like to go back at least 8 months when the pc was running efficiently

2. System Memory. I would expect a Vista system with only 512 MB of system RAM to be slow. I'm surprised it ever ran "efficiently". Hard disk drive access is "slow". All system access to hard disk drive to read/write data is "slow". You want to minimize number of disk accesses by having enough system RAM so you're not constantly using "virtual memory" of paging file on disk as a swap space. In order to load a NEW program or data into memory for execution, you're probably having to wait for system to "swap" existing program data out to disk to make room. Having said that, ensure either you're letting Vista handle allocation of paging file (size), or that you've allocated enough space for your expected work loads.

Recommendation: Replace the system memory with the maximum amount motherboard and operating system will support.

3. Hard Disk. For the file system to work efficiently, you want to check the integrity of the file system on a regular basis and "defrag" it on a regular basis. You also need enough "free" space on the disk to operate efficiently (Never want it to fall below ten percent). A very large new hard drive would also probably help as disk access to data on outer cylinders is twice as FAST (or more) than access to the inner cylinders. So of course with your minimal storage needs, your programs and data would be in the outer cylinders.

4. File System(s). Check the integrity of the file system(s) and "defrag" them on a regular basis. I'm not familiar with "Vista". On Windows XP the "chkdsk" utility was used to verify the integrity - not sure what it's called in Vista. Use the Vista built-in defrag software or better yet third party software. I prefer MyDefrag v4.2.7.

Recommendation. Verify file system integrity first, then defrag it. A badly "FRAGMENTED" file system will noticeably affect computer performance.

5. Startup Programs. Almost every application you install thinks it's the most important piece of software you'll ever own, and schedules itself to start automatically at system startup/boot so it will be ready to serve you. Most of these should only be loaded when you need to use them (some security software excepted). Temporarily disable their startup to see if you can recover the "zip" your computer used to have.

If this helps, many of those programs have a configuration page that will permit you to disable their automatic startup. Or there is third party software available to control system startups.

Shhh... The following was "stolen" erh... borrowed from Broni:
Quote
Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

6. Process Explorer. Download and unzip latest version of Process Explorer from SysInternals (now owned by Microsoft). Run the executable to see what is running on your system and how many resources (CPU, memory) each is consuming.

Solve : How do I hook up an Ethernet Switch??

Answer»

1. HughsNet HN9000 Satellite Modem. The user guide for this modem indicates it has a DHCP server built-in which ASSIGNS IP addresses to your connected computers according to the service plan you have with HughsNet.

Depending upon your needs and service plans, a "switch" might work. Having said that, you can't go wrong by getting a home router. In a thread I browsed in a different forum, most if not everyone is using a home router with this modem. If push comes to shove, you can always just use the back-end switch component of the home router (no configuration necessary - just plug both computers and modem into the "LAN" ports of the router); but I think it would be best used as a router.

Solve : RSA-Keys, Key Pairs and x509 certificates?

Answer»

Hello,
I have been trying to set up a network server at my home using FreeNAS server. It is a server OS based off of FreeBSD. Anyway, it supports file transfer via SSH, SFTP, and has a webGUI you can access via HTTPS. I would like to use these protocols, however, I have no idea how to generate and use Keys, and certificates. Specifically, the webGUI calls for an X.509 certificate to authenticate. I understand the premise behind keys and certificates, I simply do not know how to generate keys and certificates, and use those generated files to authenticate on different machines. I've read many tutorials on "How to setup SSH" ...etc, but none show how to actually generate the files and administer them. The FreeNAS server as I stated is based off of FreeBSD, and I use Windows 7 on one machine on one machine I would like to connect, and Windows VISTA on another. I also want to connect my android phone, but I already know how to install certificates on that. Any help would really be appreciated. Thank you.for anyone who may be reading this, I found the answers to my own question. Here is what I learned, and how I accomplished my task:

Software I used:
Cygwin for Windows 7 (http://www.cygwin.com/) There is a special thing you have to do in the How-To's to install OpenSSL (IMPORTANT)
These commands will also work on linux machines!

Once installed, you can open up the cygwin bash shell (terminal) and type
ssh-keygen

It will ask you where you want to save the file. The default is /home/User/.ssh/id_rsa (***USER being the user name, I will use USER wherever you need to type a user name***) You can make this any path and filename you like, as long as you remember what it is. This command will make TWO FILES, an id_rsa (no extension) and an id_rsa.pub

Let me explain what those two files are....

the id_rsa is the RSA PRIVATE KEY, and can be used where PEM format is needed. You can open this file using notepad in windows and copy the contents when you need to "Paste PEM Private Key" somewhere. This private key is the key that is distributed to the user or client you are trying to connect to your https or ssh server.

the id_rsa.pub is the public key. This public key needs to be appended to a file called authorized_keys on the server machine. the authorized_keys file is saved in the .ssh folder (if you are using cygwin, you can get to this file by typing cd /home/user/.ssh and then typing ls -L to list the files in that directory. On default install of cygwin it is also located in C:\cygwin\home\USER\.ssh) authorized_keys also has no file extension. If this file does not exist yet, here is what you need to type into your cygwin bash shell:

cd /home/User/.ssh
touch authorized_keys
cat id_rsa.pub >> authorized_keys

so, now you have a correct authorized_keys file and a ready private key. The private key now needs to be sent to the user side and put in the user's .ssh folder, where it needs to stay. You can use any method you like to do this, but I used SCP. scp is a convenient file transfer protocol which is also secure. here is what I typed:

cd /home/User/.ssh
scp -p id_rsa USER(or root)@USER-IP-ADDRESS:~/.ssh

it will ask for that users password, and upon correct authentication, it will transfer the file. It may also say something like, "Authenticity of host cannot be verified" or something like that, it's ok to say yes, unless you have no idea who you are connecting to!

Ok, now you have the private key in the right spot, and the authorized_keys file correct. Having done this procedure right, the USER machine will now be able to log into the SERVER machine without a password, making it more secure. Here are some things you should know.

Each user has their own root directory (not always called "root") in a linux based system. if you put the authorized_keys file in the folder /root/.ssh, then be sure you are trying to log into that machine as [emailprotected] or it will not work. if you want to ssh onto that machine as minus21, then you should put the authorized_keys file into the /home/minus21/.ssh folder. Remember, the machine you are trying to connect to via ssh (or sftp) is the SERVER machine. that is the machine that needs to have the authorized_keys file, and the other machine needs to have the id_rsa private key.

You can also do this whole procedure using DSA keys, however when you want to initially generate the DSA keys, you need to type in the terminal:

ssh-keygen -t dsa

The output of this command is the same, and so is the rest of the process.

Now, if you need an x509 certificate, you will need to use the private key you created before, or create a new one.

To generate a private key id_rsa.pem using the RSA-2048 algorithm:
openssl genrsa 2048 > id_rsa.pem

To create a self-signed certificate auth.crt with the private key auth.pem:
openssl req -x509 -new -key auth.pem > auth.crt

remember, if your shell (terminal) is not located at the moment in the directory where you are calling the private key from, or where you want to put the certificate into, the names of the key and certificate need to include the path ie:

To create a self-signed certificate auth.crt with the private key auth.pem:
openssl req -x509 -new -key /home/USER/.ssh/auth.pem > /home/USER/certs/auth.crt.

You can also create certificates in another way, using a certificate signing request (csr):

To create a certificate signing request example.csr with the private key example.pem:
openssl req -new -key example.pem > example.csr

then....

To create a signed certificate example.crt from example.csr:
openssl x509 -req -CA auth.crt -CAkey auth.pem -CAcreateserial < example.csr > example.crt

In windows, you will need to open this certificate with notepad, and paste the contents where "Paste x509 certificate here" is needed. And there you have it! This is essentially all of the answers to the question I posted. I learned ALOT more on my JOURNEY, but all of that is a different subject entirely. Good Luck to all who may be reading this!! Here are some other useful ssl commands

To generate a public key id_rsa.pub from private key id_rsa.pem:
openssl rsa -pubout < id_rsa.pem > id_rsa.pub

To verify that auth.crt is a valid certificate:
openssl verify < auth.crt

To verify that example.crt is a valid certificate:
openssl verify -CAfile auth.crt < example.crt

To create a PKCS#12 keystore: (for Microsoft compatibility)
cat example.pem example.crt | openssl pkcs12 -export > example.pfx

Solve : What are they talking about 2 logins??

Answer»

We are trying to figure out what this guy is talking about.
He says something about having 2 logins for the internet
"If you are using anything SIMILAR for your ISP as you are using for your Internet logins, then security isn't very good."

Don't know what they are talking about, because we have a username and password that we had to enter in when setting up the Internet to work.

He also said something about having a LAN. See, we are trying to figure out still what is going on with sites I use, my information getting all messed up and getting my mom's information somehow. Then when I mentioned how we are setup, here is another thing they said to-
"Having your LAN set up like that is a lot more serious when it comes to security."

Another thing they said is this:
"Having the sharing of printer and files on each other's computers can allow any malware to attack the whole NETWORK. Logging onto the Internet with one password and username makes it even easier."

Which before we did all this, we were told that it would be Ok to do this. Currently like on my mom's computer if I look under Network Connections, here is some of the stuff it lists:
Under the section that says LAN or High-Speed Internet
There are 2 things
1. 1394 Net Adapter
2. Local Area Connection
Intel(R) Pro/100 VE Network Connection
Both also have Firewalled next to them

The modem and router are both on my computer and wired through the attic out to my mom's computer.

I suspect you don't know what he's talking about, because he doesn't know what you're talking about. Not sure I do either... and that probably won't change until we speak the same language. So, here you go... Home Network, Wireless Network and Computer Networking Made Easy.We have been to the site you give us, and all the others out there before setting things up the way we have them.

This is why we do not understand why this guy is saying that the way we have it set up to share our printer and everything else is not correct to do?
He also said that we would not have a LAN setup. We do have it setup that way.

Then he writes back talking about having 2 logins for the Internet. Don't know what 2 logins he is talking about. Our ISP, which we thought stands for Internet Service Provider- we have a username and password that is the same for everyone to use. On my computer and on my mom's.

The other thing we are trying to figure out is what is CAUSING sites that we have accounts on to pick up other information. We keep having problems with not being able to login to accounts anymore and then when you give the information needed to get them back, its all wrong. We finally maybe figured out some of what is going on. They sent it to my mom's email account on one of them. We are trying to figure out how they got my mom's email address. Is this because of the way we have things setup?

Solve : Router IP address malfunction????

Answer»

To start with- I'm a computer idiot, and I understand this.

My problem- I've had a Linksys WRT54G router and Comcast DSL for about 5 years. I just began running the router wirelessly for my wife's laptop and my phone. Initially, I noticed the connection was "open" and running without security. I then researched it, and changed it to WEP. We stopped using the wireless connection for awhile, and when I WENT back to it- my devices showed the system, but I could not connect. I did a hard reset of the router and everything came back up properly, running password secured via WEP.

Today I discovered my connection was unsecured again. (No idea how this occurred) and I was unable to connect. I went back into the set-up (192.168.1.1) and entered the password again, and my devices show the system properly secured, however my phone connects, states "obtaining an IP address", then times out. The lap top says "incorrect key or passcode." I've tried switching between WEP and WPA and still the same results. I've also tried changing the password multiple times, that too doesn't help.

I then disabled the security, and both devices connected immediately.

I went back, retried all settings, even did another hard reset, and I'm still in the same situation.

Again, I'm a computer idiot- I know the hardware is old, but for our minimal uses, it's worked fine- I really don't want to buy a new router; there must be something I'm doing wrong. I've gone over all the settings, even reset to default, and still nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Don't feel bad, a lot of people have this problem. At its best Windows networking is very fussy. Granted your question properly we need to know exactly which VERSION of the Windows operating system you're using. And we need to know if you have all the updates in place. There is a known issue and with windows XP service pack two. It displays the exact behavior you have described. It will work fine on an open system with no password, but when you try to set it up for a simple password-protected wireless it cannot work right. The answer to that ministry is just make sure you have service pack three and all the updates.
And no, it's not really a problem of the router messing up the IP addresses. If that happened you would get a different kind of error message., Oh, I forgot to mention, if you have disabled the password protection on your wireless router, then you must tell Windows that you no longer using the password. Or some reason Windows doesn't know how to connect to a system with no security than previously he would use the password. Somehow computers don't remember things very well. Well, at least from the one running Windows.

And by the way I'm doing this with speech recognition software, so if you see a lot of funny things it's because my wife is in the next room watching a game program on TV and she LOL when somebody misses an answer.
Well... this is where my computer illiteracy will shine... I know I have XP- as for what version...updates... no clue. I'd have to imagine I haven't updated it... at all. I did try finding/updating the Linksys router however- I had no luck.

One thing I did notice- it's working the opposite of what you described- it works fine when I disable the protection, however, it's when it's enabled that I'm getting the errors now.

Conversely, it was working fine, secured, since Christmas Eve... just yesterday it began acting up. Dunno if someone hacked my account? Just can't figure out why all of a sudden, it stopped working.

Frustrating...If you suspect somebody messed with your router, you can do a hard physical reset. Thee should be instructions on that in the manual. You get a toothpick nor a paper clip and sticking it into a pin hole with the power one. It takes about 20 seconds more or less. Then the router is back to the original factory settings.

On the bottom it should show the default address of the router. You have to have only one PC plugged in to it and you have to set the browser to goto the local IP of the router. It might be:
Code: [Select]http://192.168.0.1 or something like that. You should see the router setup screen.I did a hard reset like you mentioned before posting... still nothing. Its almost like its a password issue.. however, I reset the password in the admin section of the 192.168.1.1 address, which it requires for log in, but still it won't connect wirelessly with it. The passwords working to get into the router controls, but not for wireless log on.Th re router password and the wireless password are different, even if they are the same. They or independent. Do you have the manual for the router? It may have some tips for overcoming the problem.
But what is strange is that it was working for so long and then it does not work anymore. I don't have a good answer for tat.
Rather than you NEUTER being defective, it may be one of your computers has a strange virus that attempts to take over your network connections. Have you run virus scans recently?
yeah, I use Kaspersky- it last ran a full check on Sunday, and daily quick scans...

Also- no manual, it's approx 5 yrs old... I tried online tech support, but they want to charge me for it!Well, back to the basics.
You can turn off all your stuff, including the modem and the router, wait at least ten minuets. Then turn it all back on. Once in awhile a device just has to cool nof, even when the ambient temperature is normal. This happens to old equipment and SOMETIMES even to new.

Afr er that, try running the network wizard again on all your computers. It is an easy way to make sure the protocols and stuff like that are OK. And reset after doing the wizard.

Then there is network diagnostic software. Let the computer figure it out. Here is about the only one that works.
http://NetWorkMagic.com

Look for "Buy Now / Download Free Trial " buy don't buy, just try. It should solve the problem in about half an hour or better. It will keep asking to unplug, plug, unplug - yada yada yada. But eventually nit does work. Most of the time.

Network Magic is a product of Cisco.
And no, I don't work for them. Just wish I had some of their stock.

A couple questions:
1. You do understand that Comcast is not DSL, but cable?
2. What do you MEAN you run the router wirelessly for your phone? Comcast uses a cable modem for computer and an EMTA modem for telephone, in some markets it can be a shared modem with the computer, so I don't see where the Linksys router fits in with the phone, wired or wireless.Quote from: Computer_Commando on December 30, 2010, 03:00:01 PM

Please refer back to my original post- self-proclaimed COMPUTER IDIOT! lol!

My cell phone picks up the wi-fi from the router. Both the cell and the laptop ran fine for awhile, suddenly they won't connect... the cell claims its waiting for an IP address, then disconnects. The laptop says password error. No one (that I know of, barring a hacker) has had access to, or changed the password. Now when I disable the security, both the phone and laptop connect without any problems. Meanwhile, throughout all this, the hardwired desktop stays connected regardless of the router secured/non-secured...That's a very popular router: http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT54G

Solve : Apple Airport Express?

Answer»

I just moved and can't seem to get my airport express to connect at my new place? I plugged it straight into the router with an ethernet CABLE and get it to recognize it. but when i go WIRELESS no luck. i cant seem to get it to connect to the NETWORK wirelessly.

anyone have any suggestions? help please.I'm not an Apple user. What is Apple Airport Express? I am currently not doing much with Apple products however i just assisted in the creation of a wireless installation at a family member's HOUSE and if your Airport Express works similar to a Wireless G router then (if nothing else is new other than a changed location) it should be able to be directed to search for AVAILABLE networks. Then once known and selected it should be able to default to the chosen source. If you are working from a new (different) modem then it involves more than that. I would suspect that you also have a different modem than you had before--specific to a new ISP. Is that the case? truenorth

Solve : Sonic Wall or Fortinet?

Answer»

I have internet access in our company set up through our domain server's group policy. Recently many employees have been dropped from their level and have put in the default policy. The default policy is very restricted. I have an outside IT company that is managing the firewall and they are very slow at resolving this issue. Every time an employeed has a problem they have to MANUALLY log them onto the firewall to regain access.
We are using a SONICWALL. the Firmware has been updated recently.

Has anyone heard of this problem? Should I not have their access set up in group policy? We are running slow since we started this new login process.First of all, our consulting firm does not have an expert in that specific area. Perhaps somebody on the forum can handle your specific questions. But meanwhile, you may wish to consider getting another consulting firm or at least preparing yourself to be more aggressive with the firm you now have.
To that end, here are a couple of videos that are free and are supported by Microsoft on their website. The Microsoft support site is an excellent source of free information about group management and other issues that can be important in your enterprise. May I suggest you or one of your peers watch some of these videos and perhaps get some ideas about how to address your issues with your network consultant.

Please excuse any typographic errors or grammar mistakes. This was done in a hurry using speech recognition software under Windows.
I have been agressive and on top of things here. I have also had 2 quotes from different companies this year. To replace our IT management is not a small task as you may think. We have a very complicated network. In the meantime while we replace this company I thought we could resolve the issue on site.

I just thought I would give this site a try since you all call yourselves experts!! Thanks for the REPLAY.
This thread is still OPEN.
Check back later and see if an expert shows up.

Solve : multi eithernet ports?

Answer»

i have a router with 1 either-net port what could i get to make to where i have more than one waht kind of switch would i need to put in the back of my router to make to where i have more than one ports.First, the piratical answer.
Get a NEW or used router that has for or five ports on it.

Second, the direct answer. Almost any switch or hub with for or five ports.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_hub
The reference has a photo of a Net gear box.I had one of those that lasted for years. I think it still works.
can u combine a motorola router with a netgear ethernet _hub?Yes. If bother are 100mbps Ethernet they are compatible.
I assume you mean a Motorola router and a Net gear Hub.

Are you SURE the Motorola is a router? Do you have the model number.
My guess is you have a Motorola modem that behaves as residential gateway.
If it is the one I am thinking about, you will need to replace it someday.

You might consider getting a new Como modem.router/wireless in on unit.

But yes, there should not be a problem using a hub after the modem.

OOPS. You have to make sure that modem does act like a router. Otherwise you can NOT use just a hub after it. I tried that on a Motorola modem and it don't work. You use a hub only after a router. Same for a switch. With current prices, you might as well buy a router.
Thee are other possibilities, but what I has said here is what you need to know for a typical residential gateway.Motorola makes CABLE modems. It's highly unlikely OP has a Motorola router, especially since he said it has 1 ethernet port. A router wouldn't be a router with only 1 port.i got road runner internet from brighthouse and i dont know if it a router or modem since it has 1 eithernet port.. i didnt buy the router or modem the guy just came and ran a coaxel wire from the cable box to the router and a chord to the router and to my computer and thats it If you have a coaxial wire running to the Motorola box, it's DEFINITELY a cable modem, not a router. You need to feed the ethernet cable into a router and then distribute it to other computers from the router.

Quote from: rthompson80819 on December 26, 2010, 05:12:58 PM

Actually, I need to modify that statement a little. There are a few (very few) cable modems and router combinations. The OP only has a single ethernet port, where combination modems and routers will have usually four ethernet outputs. In either case, if it has a coaxial input it has a cable modem built into it.ok so if i have a cable modem ( inwhich i did chek and i do ) IF i get a netgear cable switch box with extra ports, Run the modems cable in to the switch box and another cable to my computer .. so is that right >? and will it work Yes, it works that way. Go ahead.
If you have problems, come back and find someone who can walk you through it.
But chances are it will work right from the start.

Solve : Router bad or setting wrong?

Answer»

I am trying to troubleshoot a router/DSL problem and hope someone can help.

Some BACKGROUND. I have a desktop running XP hard wired to a Lynxsys WRT54G router and a laptop running XP connected via wireless. I have ATT DSL. The DSL modem is a Wesatell but don't see a model NUMBER listed on it. The modem is connected to the router. Everything has been working OK for a while. I started having problems with 2 DAYS ago when someone tried to connect to my wireless with a different laptop computer and could not access the internet. I then tried on my destop and could not get connected. I had been running the modem in "bridge?" MODE and running router in PPOE? mode.

I then conacted ATT support and eventually determined that the DSL modem was working OK, but changed the modem to PPOE? mode in the process. I can connect to the internet when a computer is directly connected to the modem but not when it is connected via the router. I have done a bit of different settings with the DSL in both Bidged? and PPOE? mode and tried different corresponding settings on the router but nothing has worked.

I have read various problems about ipconfig problems between modem and router which seems to sound like the issue I have, but none of the solutions that I read about have worked for me.

I appear to still have network file and print sharing connectivity between my two computers but can't seem to get the router modem to connect.maybe retry to reset the router and network settings back to default ?

I see....Hi Broni

The laptop is only 10 months old. I have given up on it - going to take it in on warranty claim as Computer Commando says. I think my time is better spent over Christmas installing my new hard disks on my GAMING MACHINE in raid mirrored. (I've never done a raid before so it'll be a new experience.)

I'm very sure it's not the fault of the router as I an connect to the router with my Laptop and receive a fairly good signal. I haven't checked the wireless adapter yet but i'm quite sure it's not it's fault. There aren't any other insecure network to try to connect to.

Thanks!Solved. Lock please Perhaps it would be best for CH forum for you to SHARE what STEPS you might have taken in resolving your connections issues. For future references to others. If you may... Lol, it wasn't MUCH of a SOLUTION. It ended up me noticing that I've been typing the key in wrong ^^"

Pretty stupid, huh.

I have a wireless network and use WPA2-PSK ( long PASSWORD )
I am afraid that the network will be infiltrated by some of the neighbors.

Solve : block other networks?

Answer»

I am a beginner and wondered if wireless network connections that my computer picks up from neighbors can be used to ACCESS my computer or do they have to have my account/password to do so. Is there a way for me to block all connections but my own or is this necessary?See here --> http://ask-leo.com/how_can_i_block_neighboring_wireless_networks.htmlThanks for your HELP. I'm USING Windows 7 and the screens looked a LITTLE different than the EXAMPLES, but I think that my configuration is okay now.

Solve : Windows cannot find local profile & is logging you on with temporary profile.?

Answer»

This is the first message I got when clicking onto my account. It then came up "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile." I changed users & logged onto my daughters account & this came up perfectly normal. I went onto the Microsoft website & it said it was a "migrated computer" problem & to delete the source user account or to delete the SID entries for the account from a registry subkey. Not too sure about either of these methods. Would be grateful if anyone could offer any advice. My system is Windows XP home Edition. Thanks.Had you been able to log in okay before this? Are you now able to log in okay every time? If so, you may have lost some configuration settings, but you probably don't otherwise need to worry. Windows has rebuilt your profile. Carry on as normal.I have never had a problem logging on before yesterday. The problem is still there, I am still being logged on with a temporary profile, which seems to be the same as starting all over again. I have lost most of my desktop icons, all my documents & pictures are gone and I need to create a new internet account so have lost all my contacts and saved emails. I tried to restore the computer to an earlier date but that did not work either. I would really like to be able to get back my old local profile if possible, I know everything is still in there, but how do I retrieve it? Thanks for any further help.Try here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812339Oh, okay Kelly. Well the bad news is I don't think you've got any hope of repairing your old user profile. I would suggest creating a new user and using that instead. Don't delete the old user without ensuring you have preserved all the files you need from the old profile. Pay particular attention to Outlook data files - they are usually in a fairly obscure location.Rob, I really appreciate you TAKING the time to help me so far and hope you can help me further. I have done as you advised and created a new user profile but have had no luck finding any of my old files. I imagine this is because I'm not sure of what I am doing! I have gone into the "System Properties-Advanced" section, where my old profile is but am not sure if I need to copy this to somewhere else and then delete it. I have also searched for my Outlook Express files without any luck. I have LOOKED through some other forums where this has happened to someone else and they said that these types of files (dbx or pst ) will be in a hidden folder "C:\ Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\ApplicationData\Identities\Microsoft\Outlook Express- but I can't find anything like that. So, as you can see, I could use any more information you can give me, as I have never had to do anything like this before but would like to learn how so I can at least find my email contacts. Thanks in advance. Kelly.Kelly, by default you won't be able to find hidden files/folders. In Windows Explorer, click Tools-->Folder Options. On the View tab, find the option "Show hidden files and folders". Enable that and click okay. You should then be able to find the folder you were looking for previously at the location you mentioned. If not, come back to us - there are some other places to look.Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on June 02, 2009, 06:02:16 AM

You may also need to enable viewing system files. Although when you're done, make sure you want to disable this feature as you don't want to mess with important system files.Outlook files are not set to be system files, nor are they hidden in system folders, so this should not be necessary.Hi Rob,
Thanks for your time again. Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you. I did as you SUGGESTED & enabled "Show hidden files & folders", but have still had no luck. When searching for "C:\DocumentsandSettings\User\LocalSettings\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Outlook" it said it was not a valid folder. I then tried "C:\DocumentsandSettings\User\LocalSettings\ApplicationData\Identities\{identification number-25 characters}\Microsoft\OutlookExpress" and got "refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure the disk was properly inserted or that you are connected to the Internet or your network & try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location." At the time of the search I was connected & I don't know what disk they mean. I also tried going into My Computer-Local Disk(C:)-Documents & Settings and clicked my old profile but a text box came up- "C:\Documents& Settings\KellyMuir is not accessible. Access is denied." So Rob, I hope you can give me more help. Thanks- Kelly.Ah! There's the problem. That last folder "C:\Documents and Settings\KellyMuir" has the permissions set so that you can't read or search it. I bet your Outlook files are somewhere in there.

Find the KellyMuir folder and right-click on it. Choose Properties. Click the Security tab. Click Advanced. Click the Owner tab. Where it says "change owner to", choose your new user ID from the list. Tick the box that says "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects." Click okay and okay again.

This process may take a while to complete. Once it has done, you can retry your search.Rob, Thanks again for your reply. Sorry it has taken so long to get back to this. The good news is, before I read your last post, I tried logging onto my old profile again and was able to. A message came up about the Registry Repair having done something and I have everything back again! Yay! Even though I did not have to try your last lot of tips, I have kept them just in case this happens again, so I at least know what to try. Thanks again for all your help. Kelly.A pleasure Kelly. I'm glad you got things working. Be sure to check in with us again if you have problems in future.I am having the exact same problem that Kellym was having. Grrrrr. This will be detrimental to my work if I don't recover my profile. I have created a new user as administrator and tried copying the files from the original profile but I'm being told "Access Denied" when I click on any of the profile folders. I have tried changing the security settings as you mentioned previously but again get told "Access Denied"

Solve : Game Dedicated Server?

Answer»

I'm TRYING to RUN a dedicated game server but I can't seem to get it running that will allow other people to join. I enabled DMZ in my router settings but I'm pretty sure people still can't see it.

Any thoughts?sometimes you have to set a variable in the game before it will be visible outside the lan; I Know that HALF-life 2 requires you to set "sv_lan 0" at the console, for instance.yeah, I'm USING CSPromod, a half life 2 mod. (its actually defaulted at sv_lan 0) So I'm not sure what the problem COULD be.

Have you tried CONTACTING your ISP about the issue?Im in the process now, waiting to be contacted from their tech team, just THOUGHT someone MIGHT have had an idea prior to them contacting. I have contacted them previously and its quite a long winded process and i never feel satasfied with their answer.

So if anyone knows their stuff with connections please have a look and give me a shoutIf you aren't satisfied with the communications you are receiving from somebody that you are paying money to - perhaps you should change ISP's to somebody that you are happy with.

Let us know what they tell you.that definately could be on the agenda, also the number i have to ring is a premium rate number, so this could also persuade me to change.

Hopefully someone could give me a heads up and tell me if im actually getting the service im paying for

Solve : D-link 615 d2 router monitoring??

Answer»

Hey guys, i currently allow a housemate to access my internet through my router, all connections are wired and have wireless turned off. I WOULD like to know what sites are being visited by my housemate to make sure i don't get in mither with my SP ect because of misuse. The logs provided by accessing my router through my browser do not show the IPs or sites visited only BASIC system/security/status info. There are check boxes in the LOG settings to display critical/warnng/INFORMATION but these are greyed out and i cannot enable these to display this information in my log files, so i cannot view the information i need that way.
I read a little about flashing my router with DD-WRT as this will open up my router with more options than it currently has with the factory firmware and would doing this allow me to achieve what i am trying to do anyway?
Seems a bit hit and miss for just seeing what my hardware is being used to access.
Are there any programs [freeware] that after i install on my machine will let me see what sites my house mate accesses through my router? No ideas guys?Does your ISP actually have some restrictions regarding the browsing of certain types of websites? That seems unusual to me. As far as i know my isp has no restrictions with visiting web sites as i have never found a site that has been restricted, i will give them a call tomorrow to confirm this though.Home ROUTERS don't keep logs of the type of information you are seeking. Only the computer does & it's not your computer.I don't know about the DIR-615, but my DIR-655 quite literally allows me to enabled website logging- so I can see exactly what URLs selected computers have gone too.

Yes i was sure that this was or should be a simple thing to do, as long as you are the router admin.
BC_Programmer, was this something that your router does as standard, you didnt have to install some third party firmware, it was just available through your routers homepage[options] from the off ?Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 12, 2010, 04:36:48 PM
I don't know about the DIR-615, but my DIR-655 quite literally allows me to enabled website logging- so I can see exactly what URLs selected computers have gone too.
I stand corrected. My Linksys BEFSR-41 has logging capability. It has to be enabled because by default, it's off.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Ok, been on the phone to my ISP and after various conversations with different departments they concluded by saying that with my router the log settings cannot be changed to log the IP addresses of sites visited as that is not a feature of the router, it was manufactured that way, they cannot even enable this feature, blah blah ect ect.....
Right, will start a new thread as my next qeustion would be simply
"Will flashing my router with a third party firmware DD-WRT allow me to log sites visited through my router"

Thanks guys.Mine came with the feature; I can't even install DD-WRT if I wanted too; but it appears that most of the features it would add I already have anyway.

I accessed if by Choosing "Advanced" in the horizontal (upper) toolbar, and then selecting "Access Control" from the left- shown here:

At that point I simply select "add Policy" (as I did here for the "loger" entry)

at which point it takes me through the steps of which machines to log activity for, how to handle it (deny access and log for certain sites, any sites, etc, or allow and log access to any URL.)

Again, I don't know if this is on the DIR-615, but it's on my 655.

as for DD-WRT, one of my internet buddies was singing the praises of it some TIME ago, seemed to even express pity that I could run it, even though I had no intention of doing so (since I didn't need any of the features). As with any firmware flashing type of thing, it's always a good idea to proceed with caution, however.

You could use something like OpenDNS to achive what your after. My router hasnt the options of yours BC_Programmer, the log settings mine has that might make my logs a little more detailed are greyed out as you can see.
You can see i have none of the options your router has under the advanced tab niether, crazy seen as how it has four lan connections and therefore could be routing data to/from four seperate PCs with no way of logging addresses of where data is being sent to/from, madness.

Solve : anyone know about apples airport extreme base station?

Answer»

I'm TRYING to set up my home network, and i thought i was pretty computer savy but i guess im an IDIOT, cause i'm not getting something rightso heres the LONG and short of it
I have an awesome mac, the latest greatest i mac!! i want to set up a net work through my pad! i have the airport extreme and 2 airport expresses so i can use the whole airtunes thing

I have cable internet coming from the wall to the modem, then an either net cable going from the modem to the first slot on the airport extreme base station labed wan port

i then have an eithernet cable going to the back of my computer from the the first eithernet port.

i try the whole set up thing through airport utility, I'm really good a following directions and follow them to the T, no matter how i try to set up the connection, the only way i can use it if i choose no security option (which i'm not a fan of but its the only way it's letting me get internet access)

so there are many dcph/manual/isp/router/ all of there connection numbers that it asks me for it says i need to get them from my internet company, but i never did before and it worked, no why do i have to call them.? and then when i CHOSE the no security option it lets me!! so now what i don't need to contact them with no security?

it's kind of a mess, and they make it out to be ohh it so easy just hook it up and go?

Solve : Can't Renew IP Address?

Answer»

My computer was messed by a virus several months ago, so I just barely reformatted the whole thing. I have installed all of the drivers and everything for both Wireless and LAN. My wireless signal is not strong in the room I'm using, so I ran a LAN line, and am trying to get connection on it. Unfortunately, it says it is unable to obtain an IP address. Help anyone?

My stats are as follows:

Dell Dimension 2400
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.79GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM

Windows XP Home Edition (Yes, I have original installation CDs)
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Graphics Card
Radeon 9250

Sound Card
Creative SB Live! Series (WDM)

I have and use regularly the following spy/adware programs:
SuperAntiSpyware
Malwarebytes AntiMalware
AVG

LAN Software
Broadcom 440x DriverSorry to change the subject, but just out of curiosity - how do you keep getting viruses? i have a wife that is not computer/internet savvy. So do I, so I make sure her computer is properly protected. You don't have to be "computer/internet savvy" to be safe. Just saying.fair enough. what do you suggest? btw, i just noticed that i accidentally copied and pasted a paragraph before my stats that wasn't supposed to be there. i modified it accordingly. any help on the LAN connection issue?Sorry, I'm not trying to be difficult - and I'm not ignoring your problem. Networking isn't my strength so you'll have to wait for someone more knowledgeable than I to jump in. But for your other question:

1) All systems with which I am involved have a GOOD anti virus utility installed (I use Kaspersky, but that's a personal choice). It is always resident and definitions are updated every few hours (that's Kaspersky's default).

2) I also use Spyware Blaster on all systems (definitions downloaded weekly). Ditto Malware Bytes (FULL scan every few weeks).

3) My browsers (Firefox and IE) are set for maximum protection (anti phishing enabled, pop-ups blocked, etc).

4) Neither I nor my wife (nor anyone who uses a system with which I'm involved) EVER open a link or an attachment in an email unless we are 100% certain we know who sent it or that it is absolutely safe. Nor do we download anything unless we know what it is and that it comes from a reliable source. On the rare occasions I break this last rule, I immediately scan the file with Kaspersky after the download.

5) All system partitions are imaged twice a week (to a second hd on the systems or to an external hd). In the event of ANY kind of catastrophe I always have a safe haven to which I can return. All other partitions are imaged every couple of months (or as needed).

6) All critical data is replicated on multiple systems or external drives. My music collection (700 cd's I ripped a few years ago + whatever I've downloaded or otherwise added since) exists on 3 computers and 3 external drives. There are also 3 images of the drive containing that music. Overkill? Maybe. But I'm NEVER worried about losing it.

Those are the basics. Sound complicated? It's not. Especially the part about never opening unknown links or attachments and not visiting potentially dangerous websites.alright, duly noted. we are pretty good about not visiting unsafe websites (we use WOT), but that's not always 100% correct. we also do not open attachments or visit external links from email unless we know who sent it. but you definitely gave me some good things to think about, so thank you!

again, anyone with networking expertise, please help! thank you in advance! Are any other computers connected to the router working OK? Was the cat 5 cable pre-made or did you put the connectors on yourself? Does the port you are plugged into light up on the front panel? Have you UNPLUGGED power from the router for a minute or TWO and then plugged it back in?we have a blu-ray player plugged into the router, and it works fine. we use it for netflix. we also have a laptop that connects to the router via WiFi, with no problem. the cable came pre-made. the port i'm plugged into on the router does light up in the front. and yes, i have tried unplugging power and plugging it back in, with no result. With Windows networking, sometimes it is BEST to start over.

But first, check for any hardware conflict in the device manager. A common problem is failure to use the right drivers for the motherboard hardware. Do not depend on Windows to do this for you, even when the CD you have is the OEM version of Windows. Get the drivers off the PC maker's web site.

If that is alright, time to do the Network Setup Wizard from the start. Answer all the questions best as you can. Then reset and try again.

Last resort is to use Network Magic. To date, there is no Open-Source equal. It is a Crisco product with a limited trial time. When it works, it really works. But this is not an endorsement. That product is needed only if you have a very odd network. IMO.

Solve : Internet Stability Connection Problem (DSL)?

Answer»

Hi everyone! I am having internet connection problems and I have been trying to figure out what the culprit is.

The problem: The past 2 days the router would suddenly drop and lose its internet connection. The router would then try to reestablish connection. The first time this happen I thought it was just ANOTHER sudden drop, but it has been happening to frequently that it has become a concern.

How does the internet connection drop?
1) If someone picks up or call the home phone. The router will suddenly drop its dsl connection and then try to reconnect.
2) If the internet is being heavly use in the house. Playing games online, listening to music(playlist.com), watch videos on youtube. Normally under heavy load the internet will just go to a crawl. Instead it just drops and tries to reconnect.
(The DSL light on the router would flash trying to ready itself and then look for a DSL connection. If it does not find it the first time the DSL light will flash and RETRY again. Once the DSL light finds a stable connection it would stay on then try to establish a DSL connection. The internet light is off until it finds a connection. )

What I have done:
1) Changed the telephone line connecting to the router
2) Try a different phone jack in the house and still the same problem.
3) Took the router off line for 2 hours unplug everything and plugged everything back in.

I have narrowed it down to 2 possible problems.
a) Either the router is getting bad on me.. or
2) the home phone lines are bad in the house or outside line problem.

Other info:
1. Every time there is a thunderstorm or extremely heavy winds the connection would get interrupted and it would try to reconnect.
2. It has recently been colder then normal.
(In this situation, the DSL light remains on solid, HOWEVER the internet light would go red or will be off. Usually after a few sec it would successfully be able to re-establish.
3. There is no static on the line, when someone calls and the router just suddenly decides to drop its internet connection. The phone connection remains stable You can still talk, the phone will not drop.
4. There has been some issue with people calling before and unable to reach our home phone.
5. It is normal that the router would drop its internet connection for some ODD reason at least once a week.

Router info: Westell 327W from Verizon.

I am trying to determine if it is the line or the router.
Yesterday it crashed on me 6 times 2 times which took over 3 min to reestablish connection
Today it crash on me 5 times, when I try a new jack it maintain a connection for only 1 min before losing the connection again.

Question: If it is the router where do I buy a DSL router? I thought most local stores only carry basic routers/switches with Ethernet ports?
If it is the line: How do I determine if it is an outside line or an inside line problem? Who would be in charge of fixing this?

its only been 2 days, but if it is this bad now, it might get worst. I also looked at the system and connection log and did not find anything bad at all. the logs seem to keep clearing every time I unplug or turn it off, this is all I get:

Need help to figure out if it is line problem or a modem problem! I don't have any other tools to test the physical lines at home or to test the router..

It is not clear what you mean.

It is not clear what you mean.
If that happens, you have a bad installation.

I have had this setup for many years now, originally when it was first setup this way there was static on the line because the lines in the house was not use to the increase in noise. The DSL filters provided did not work to well at all, as even with the filter the phone had static. eventually it did take out the phone and internet so I had to submit a repair request through a neighbor wireless. They did send a technician out and they did something to the line. By the time I looked out the window it looked like they were taping something. I have no idea what they did, but the static is gone and the internet was running just fine.

The internet only started acting up these past 2 days. I check the phones again and do not hear any static through them. The calls are clear and nothing seems wrong with the phone calls.

What I mean for that line is if someone calls or if you try to call someone by just picking up the phone, for some reason it causes this interrupt with the internet service. Not just a short interrupt in which the internet drops and the router will just try to reconnect. Instead the interrupt causes the router to think there is no dsl connection so it searches for one.So this is a new problem with the drop put.
But the filters did not work right from the start.
DSL filters are required on every phone.

The alternative is to have a DSL filter at the point where the phone wire comes into thee house. That is what I did. I put the DSL modem right at the entry point. The DSL modem is first on the line coming in. Then the filter which feeds all phones. This gives me max separation of phone and modem. Not of the phones have any noise and the modem is never affected by the use of any phone while on line.

And I replaced the DSL modem for a better model and service did get much better.

However, I finally agave up on the DSL. The phone company just takes no interest in keeping the phone cables in good condition. I now use Com Cast.

You may need to get a new DSL modem. A company called two-wire makes units often used by AT&T.Try direct connecting first the ISP modem to one computer and check if incoming calls causes interference to isolate the router's drop connection.Sounds to me like it's time to contact Verizon again.

Solve : Secure Network?

Answer»

which is more secured NETWORK type? cable or wireless? Cable. Wireless is less secure because the wireless signal can be detected by other computers within a certain distance. That's why special security settings should be enabled when using wireless unless you're sure you're far enough away from computers owned by someone else that your signal could not be detected.I agree with soybean .
The OP did not say if he means a network that ties to the INTERNET or other external network.
Also, the OP does not say why he needs to make a choice. Or is the question meant to be very broad in scope?

For EXAMPLE, if you live in a submarine, the wireless is preferred.Quote from: Geek-9pm on December 10, 2010, 09:10:24 PM

With all the metal bulkheads, I doubt wireless would work in a submarine.

Cable is by far the most secure, but the cable can be difficult to run from room to room or floor to floor.

You can get custom made cables with connectors already installed or you can buy bulk cable, connectors and crimping tools and do it your self.Quote from: rthompson80819 on December 10, 2010, 09:38:34 PM

No. You can not run cable through the bulkheads. We install think glass windows that allow microwave to PAS. Yall never worked on any submarines. Submarine: an example only..
OK, Cable more securely. But the rate of failure is More than Wireless
And I expect Wireless is a better signal transfer ( Less loss )

Yes, the OP needs to tell us if he wants a broad or narrow consideration.
For high bandwidth over large distances the general choices are as follows, in order of TYPICAL cost.
1. Cable is often mean say copper conductor transmission.
2. Wireless often means any of radio transmission.
3. Optical fiber is the term used for non-copper transmission.

(Note: copper in this context includes other metals and alloys.)
(Typical cost is a very vague concept.)

The principal benefit of wireless is the ability to broadcast and pass over a dangerous terrain.

Solve : XP Networking Workgroup?

Answer»

I have a small network in the office. Every computer is under the Workgroup office. Windows XP on all.

Now i have 3 computers:
1) Boss
2) Accounts
3) Reception

Is there a way to set security/sharing of folders so that only certain computers/users can access the folder.

For example, I have a folder called 'data' on the Boss computer, I only want Accounts to access it while reception cant. data is also the only folder they should be able to access. I also want Boss to be able to access the the other computers with full control. Is there a way to do this with Workgroups? From what i tried it cant really be done. I share/secure it by adding a user that I have on Boss, so when i try access the folder from accounts, they should be able to ENTER the login details and get access, but now it just keeps saying Not enough PERMISSION etc. If I add the user everyone, then everyone can access it no PROBLEM but thats not what i want, i want selective user accesses.

helpHi,

Just create two users on boss (Accounts and Reception ).. If you want to restrict the access to data folder, just add the user account 'Accounts ' to its shearing permissions, then you are able to access the folder by passing the correct user credentials from any computer with in the workgroup, ie you need to give the account user as Boss\Accounts with right password when accessing the data folder on the network..

If you want to restrict to all users on a specific computer there is no direct way, as access is controlled by account. You could filter the
needed ports so that only that computer could use filesharing with that specific computer, but the actual access would still be controlled
by the accounts in use to attempt the connection. Enabling Guest within an IP+Port restricted sharing is possible but in reality is a bad OPTION.. i tried that, but when i try open the folder from another computer, it says i dont have permissions, never asks for the username and passowrdTry to avoid 'simple files sharing' in the system (My computer, tools, folders options, view, scroll down to the end, and uncheck it... you may/may not need to RESTART)

Also you need to check any firewall is blocking connections!iv done all of that
?
