Solve : Networking 2 Computers from different physical addresses?

Answer»

I would like to know if it is possible to connect to computers to a network from two different LOCATIONS. My friend and I would like to connect our computers to a network even though we are a mile apart. I have a 2-Wire Router through ATT. He has a modem from ATT ALSO. Is it possible to have him connect to my Router even though he does not have a direct line into it? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!! i think what you are talking about is a WAN network

however if this is for gaming purposes then there is a program called hamachi

what it does is sets up a virtual lan network between different ip addresses

this works great for steam games and bf2 and things like that when you WANT a lan game but arent on the same router

Solve : waiting for network?

Answer»

Okay here is the situation. I currently have my Dell PC wired to my Linksys WRT54G router, along with a newer Dell laptop, an iPod Touch, and a Playstation 3 connecting wirelessly to it. The problem I am having is getting this old Compaq Armada E500 to successfully connect. I purchased an HP 11-Mbps wireless LAN PC card off EBAY and unfortunately neither the seller nor HP themselves have the drivers specifically designed for the card. Nevertheless HP recommended drivers for the Compaq version of the same card and according to the laptop the card is working properly.
Now the problem is that while my network shows up in the LIST of avaible networks when I click it to connect I enter the correct password and it waits, and waits, and waits for the network, eventually giving up. And so here is the problem. It simply waits for the network and can't make the connection. Any HELP would be greatly appreciated.

Additional Information:
operating system on laptop: windows xp professional
router model: Linksys WRT54G
current firmware version: 8.00.5
network card: HP 11-Mbps wireless LAN PC card
using ORiNOCO Client Manager (could not display available networks without it)
already tried disabling the security
running on service pack 3Here is a long list of possible solutions.

http://tinyurl.com/Windows-XP-wireless-password
(The link may be slow to load.)

If you find something that identifies the problem, please come back. I have an old Compaq laptop with the same issue, but a different router. There are over 50 articles that might have the solution. There is, somewhere, a fix in XP for this problem. I can't remember where I saw it.
no luck, nothing in there matching my problem from what I could see.is it just your computer that doesnt connect or is it everything? It's just the old compaqIf you disable the WEB security and run the thing 'naked' the Compaq will conect. Right? That is what mine does. But you don't want to have a naked router in a busy neighborhood. The is a problem with the security thing in Windows XP and it was fixed in an update. If you did not GET the update, the security does not work right. The PC can not get the password right. It is somewhere in the Microsoft KB, I just can not remember. I wish I could, I would like to get my old Compaq to work on a secure wireless router. It has XP SP2 from HP, but not all the updates. Can't get the updates 'cause it can't connect! Have not yet tried my SP3 CD on it. Afraid to try it.

Maybe you could put SP3 on your machine.
And tell us it it solved the problem. OK?

Solve : new router??

Answer»

I need a new ROUTER. Any suggestions? Something fast but not too expensive. Probably something under $50. Something with 1000mb lan would be nice too. THANKS!i hope ou meant 100mb not 1000mb :-p

most routers have 100mb lan now anyway

you could go for a g class router

depending on if its dsl or adsl pick up a belkin or a netgear

i find they are the best never had a problem with either of thier makes and you can pick them up really cheap

ive over generalised there but i dont think you can go wrong with most routers

andyI ment 1gb lan
My DAD went to bestbuy because he didnt want to buy on the interent
Got a netgear WIRELESS N with 1gb lanalright. i had no idea that that even existed

sorry im behind the times it appears :-p

andylol its ok

Solve : Networking with a Linksy's 16 port hub....?

Answer»

only one pc has internet.....not sure how to get others going.....went into internet CONNECTIONS and got lost.....NEED a walk through.....do I need a network card for other pc's? I'm not at all familiar with networking but I just sprent $120 for ethernet cords and the kids want their's going...please help....thxYou can START by reading these pages....

http://www.pcworld.com/article/102461/how_to_set_up_your_home_network.html

Here is what I have used.

Phone line---->DSL Modem--->
--->Wireless router--------->Multiple port Hub
|--->Laptop 1 |--->Desktop 3
|--->Laptop 2 |--->Desktop 4

The Hub by itself does not work with more that one computer.
I have to have the router. I will let somebody else explain this.

In FACT, I would not need the Hub, but I didn't want to string more cable through the trees. So just one cable comes out of the router and is split by the Hub. Because my internet speed is less that 1 Mega bit, the Hub does not slow down the connection.

KINDEST REGARDS..
HONEY1601.xHi honey, you need to boot-up the Windows CD from your computers BIOS, when the laptop starts up, before it gets to the windows booting up screen you should see a little menu flash about about press some key to go into the BIOS, then you have to try to tap that key quick, you have to go into the BIOS and then once your in the BIOS you should have an option to set-it up to boot from the CD.

You can find more INFORMATION about it here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If you dont catch what it says as it will flash it up pretty quick, you may have to reboot the computer one or two times... It can be frustrating but take your time you'll get their in the end, good luck!

P.S: See if you can find the book that came with the laptop, it might say how to do it in there... & those sky engineers sound like a very helpful bunch! It can be put right dont despair!

Solve : Secure wireless access?

Answer»

Hello,
I have two laptops (one is mine and one is my wifes's) that are wireless..I have a Linksys WRT54G Broadband Router.. I CURRENTLY have two desktops connected with cable..I wish to connect to the internet, wireless, using the two laptops but not necessarily creating a network, just wish to access the network, laptop to wireless access, not necessarily computer to computer...
I know there are several different methods of security out there but was wondering which would be the quickest and easiest method to have a secure connection for both laptops without creating a lot of work and potiential issues....
Would appreciate any input on this matter,
Thank you,
LarryYou can USE WEP, which makes you generate octal or hex number sets to enter to set up the network.

Use, INSTEAD, the WPA settings. WPA is more secure, and easier to set up, since WPA simply asks for a pass phrase which you select (make it longer than one word), and you put in the pass phrase at each computer you want to connect. The router configures the rest for you.

Doing this will not automatically create a LAN (Local Area Network). It will grant the computers access to the Internet.

Thank you for your quick reply!!.. to aviod a possible CONFLICT with the router, am I correct in assuming I need to use the same pass phrase for both laptops?.. Or can I use a different pass phrase for each latop?
The reason I am asking this and the previous question is so the wife will have a knowledge, as well as I, as to what the procedure is in case she has issues of some kind and I am not around...
Again, Thank you for the input!!!
LarryYou'd use the same passphrase for each computer you want to have access to the network.

You can read about WEP and WPA -- probably more than you want to know!

Hello,
Sorry about the delay in GETTING back to thank you for your assistance.. worked fine once I got the router reset.. have both laptops up and running using a WPA, was simple for the most part and that is not only how I like it, but the wife also!!!
Once again, thank you!
LarryYou are quite welcome. Glad to be of assistance.

Solve : Tiscali Adsl Router problem?

Answer»

Hi All. A friend of mine has screwed up his internet big time and i was wondering if anyone had any words of wisdom.

Basically.

Hes with Tiscali and has an adsl connection. So the other day he buys a wireless router so he can connect it up to xbox live.

He fits it all up...nothing WORKS. So i pop down and see what the problem is. Im pretty good with computers so i thought id give it a shot. No luck.

I looked into his NETWORK settings properties and it turns out the adsl modem is in the DIAL up section. I have a NTL old Modem with virgin and its the most reliable thing ever so i had no idea what to do with this. Also in the network settings for the modem the obtain ip address automatically isnt CHECKED. But we cant check it because it is greyed out.

We were on the administrator account so it isnt a CLEARANCE thing.

I was wondering if anyone can help. Is there some sort of restart function for a adsl modem. Mines ethernet and i just turn it off for 30 seconds. Is there anything like that for an adsl one?

Thanks for listening.

Solve : bandwidth sharing to computers in the same network?

Answer»

please how can i share BANDWITH to computer with the same network. am using 18 computer each i connect to my laptop the net will be fine but if i connect to the switch, the network will be breaking. use use radio, radio to router then router to switch. can some tell me what to doInstead of using a switch it's likely you'll need a router with NAT SUPPORT. Of course this depends on what TYPE of connection / broadband connection you're using.

hello, thank for your help. am operating a cyber cafe' what do i use for that?ASSUMING the switch does not have NAT you'd need to get a router with NAT, I'd imagine every router out there today has this support (e.g. Linksys router). Once this is at your Cyber Cafe you'd connect you main line to the WAN port, and then the computers and/or switch to the other ports. Setup DNS so the router assigns addresses to each of the computers on the network and you should be good.

Solve : ICS with a modem?

Answer»

ok guys, heres my issue. i recently bought this awesome NEC mobilepro 900, but i dontt yet have a networking INTERFACE for it, so i figured i might be able to use my netbook (hooray for eee) as a networking BRIDGE (using ICS). the only issue is that the MP900 only has a V90 modem jack, and Im unsure of how to set up a connection to where my Mp900 can leech the connection off of my eee. theres proobably a really simple way of doing this but im not very experienced when it comes to networking. Im running server 2003 on my eee (for some reason it RUNS better and faster than xp... though really annoying to configure for desktop use) and CE.net 4.2 on the MP900. in short, i need to use my eee as a server/host/bridge to allow the MobilePro to connect to it to get the internet connection off of it by using dial-up modems instead of an ad-hoc cat5/wifi connection. any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

oh, and FEEL free to contact through aim/etc

Solve : wireless help?

Answer»

hi, i just RECENTLY moved to my new place and got my NET all hooked up, but it seems very very sluggish, an when i mean sluggish i mean it, im on my main pc now, it took 17 min to load this page, had to repair connection 3 times just to get the page up right. im currently using Gigabyte GN-WP01GS PCI WLAN card (Turbo)

i thought it was the net, so i tested my wifes laptop on it, and found it RUNS great, loads pages in half a second, did speed test and RESULTS were 11k dl/ 5k up 15MS ping

i updated my card, an NOTHING changed. the card is fairly new, i believe i got it last july so its not even a year old yet ill post a screeny of what it looks like on the client utility if someone could help me out or point me into the right direction that would be great

this screeny was from earlier, i went to post, an i lost connection an lost everything i wrote down xD I assume with all this testing you've been doing above that you've also tried moving the laptop closer to the wireless router?

Also make sure your laptop is not connecting to a neighbors router.

Solve : Home ethernet setup - not online?

Answer»

I'm trying to run two PC's BACK to back using ethernet connections with crossover to play card games. Both PC's are Windows XP.

HP Pavillion 533C
HP MEDIA Center PC

Both PC's are ABLE to run the same game independently (Bridge Baron 18 - card game) , and game is designed for both internet and solo play.

What windows or dropdowns should I be seeing when attempting to get the two PC's to talk using the ethernet connections and crossover cable?you want to play multiplayer but on 2 pc's? You can set up a network and LAN the game if it has that option or just CONNECT online to internet on both pc's and play?

Solve : adsl?

Answer»

hi i have adsl internet connection on my computer and want to know how i can run another computer off the same connection?? You'd need a router. You can get a wireless router G for about $50 (~$30 on SALE) at wal-mart or the like.
And welcome to the Computer HOPE Forums! thankyou i have a router do i plug another filter/splitter into the ONE i have my 1ST computer running off? i dont know what to do From my experience, if you're running a back-to-base alarm system, you shouldn't need a filter/splitter.

If you have a modem router like mine, basically all you need to do is plug in all the wires and you're set.

A seperate router requires you to first connect the ADSL line to the modem, then connect the modem to the router via USB or Ethernet. Then connect your computers to that router via antenna, USB or Ethernet, and you can start surfing the web.thankyou, so the only way is to connect both routers together via usb or ethernet? its for an upstairs computer so i cant do that?? thankyou for your helpSame case here. You can buy a wireless router with an antenna if you cannot connect via Ethernet or USB. You have to make sure your computer is compatible though. On your computer, do you see any buttons or stickers with an antenna with those CURLY brackets around them?have had wireless running on this computer b4 so im pretty sure i have tht icon somewhere.. lol

Repost the log, but this time disable "word wrap" in Notepad. The log is hard to read.

What exactly is your problem with accessing firewall?I attatched it. Cannot SEEM to get word wrap off here.
I go to lturn off or on....the firewall, and it won't open then it says the service is turned off. I go to firewall in services and it says "windows unable to start windows firewall"

[attachment deleted by admin]I don't see any immediate threat, but I can see some Norton leftovers, while you're using Avira as your protection program.
Run Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Restart computer afterwards, and see, if you can bring Windows firewall up.

I am just wondering. If your MTU is SET to a certain level, how is it that you are STILL ABLE to PING by that same amount of BYTES?Ping is a stand alone program. It always uses the same amount of bytes. It has nothing to do with your MTU size.

I recently bought a Dell laptop with built in webcam. When I CONNECT it to the modem the webcam WORKS fine, no problems. But when I use wireless, I can RECEIVE other people's webcam images, but not send my own. Is this just because I have bad internet or can it be fixed? How are you trying to to a VIDEO conference?

Solve : Network cable unplugged?

Answer»

I'm trying to connect to the internet from my Compaq Presario V2000 through a local area connection in Windows XP. However, it says that the network cable is unplugged, which it isn't. The internet on ANOTHER computer in the house works good, and all the CABLES are plugged into the modem. I have tried plugging it into a wall cable I know works, but I get the same message, so it must be the computer. I have switched cables twice. I checked the network adapters under device manager, the one that is listed under network connections with the local area network seems to be working fine. The one beside it (1394 connection?) is disabled though. I tried enabling it but it just made the computer freak out. Is that the problem? Have you managed to get it to work before?

What OS?

If you go to Device Manager, are there any Yellow Question or Exclamation MARKS?You may have TWO LAN cards installed, only one is connected to the network.

Solve : Mp3 player causes internet drop?

Answer»

Hi, Whenever I connect my MP3 player via usb I lose my wireless internet CONNECTION. Does anyone know why and how I can fix this? It's so annoying Thanks

Just read the "read this FIRST" TOPIC and realize I need to put more info on here - OS is Vista Home Premium. Wireless internet connection is through a zyxel usb adapter. MP3 is Sony NWZ-E436F, although I had the same problem with a previous Samsung MP3 player. Ta Laptop or Desktop computer?

What is its model number?

What Operating System?

When did it all start?Hi, It's a desktop - Packard Bell, can't REMEMBER or find the model number, Vista Home Premium and the mp3 is Sony NWZ-E436F. Started when I first connected my MP3 player about a week ago. Few seconds after it is plugged in the internet drops. To get the internet back I have to unplug mp3 player then disable the wireless internet adapter, then enable it again. I have just taken the whole computer upstairs and plugged into modem with ethernet cable instead of using the wireless adapter and the problem has gone. So it must be something to do with the wireless adapter/connection. Are they often incompatible with other usb devices? Looks like I'll have to invest in a very long cable and get the drill out! Wish there was a simpler solution. Any ideas? The extra USB device should have no effect on your Wireless. Does it happen with any USB device, or only the MP3?

When did this start?

If you go to Device Manager, are there any Yellow Question or Exclamation marks? It doesn't happen with any other usb device - I have a webcam that works fine with the internet. There are no yellow question or exclamation marks in device manager. Thanks for looking into this for me. This started a week ago and only when I plug the mp3 player in. Also happened with a previous mp3 player about a year ago.Desktop, correct? Not laptop?

Does the same happen when you plug the MP3 into the USB ports at the back?Just tried plugging it in at the back and the screen on the mp3 player started flashing like something was wrong (poss in time with the green flashes on the wireless internet adapter). Now the mp3 player wont work at all. Yes Desktop.Wow, very strange....

It doesnt work at all now? What about the computer?

Also, can you see if the MP3 works on another computer?Reset the mp3 player and it works again. It works fine with the internet on another computer that is connected via ethernet cable. Don't worry, have persuaded husband to do some drilling and I'll get an ethernet cable TOMORROW. Thanks for all your advice All right, no problem.
I am curious as to why this happens though.....

Anyways, with this Ethernet cable, you will undoubtedly notice a great speed improvement when surfing the internet on your computer.

Solve : Wireless connection "dropping out"?

Answer»

As a general rule is connecting to the internet using a wireless connection inherently less reliable and more prone to losing that connection than using a wired connection?

I ask because a friend has recently joined TalkTalk and is using a wireless internet connection but it frequently won't log in and drops out during use.

She has CONTACTED TalkTalk without successs (they SEEM unable to offer a solution) so I wonder if it is a common problem I'm sure it shouldn't be but I can't SEE what else is at fault?

I use TalkTalk and have no problem using a basic wired arrangement.

Depends on a number of things.

What type of wireless specification is he using, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n

How far away is the access point. Is the AP near anything that might interfere with the signal, walls, metal objects, BLUETOOTH appliances.

Wired connections are usually better. I use wireless because I cannot run a cable from the AP to the computer without my fiancee hanging me with it. .

Cheap Hubs overheat and some need constant resetting.

If his connection is low or is none existent, try disconnecting the network card (through Windows) for 30 seconds or 1 minute, then reconnect and see if that makes any difference.

Cannot give much more advice without more info on hardware.Quote from: reddevilggg on March 13, 2009, 04:58:47 AM

Not got too much DETAIL myself really. I know the laptop is in another room to the "modem" but didn't realise that could be a problem. I'll try to discover a little more if I can.

I have no experience of wi-fi so I'm pretty vague about it I'm afraid.

Thanks for your response and advice, though.

No Problem.

Now, I'm a beginner when it comes to networking.... but those address codes don't look too healthy to me!! How do I fix this?? And since I'm a beginner, simplistic answers would be APPRECIATED, thank you!!Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.I did everything correctly, all the way to the end of your post and my laptop still cannot connect to the internet. Do you connect wirelessly? If so, is the wireless switch on?
Did you try wired connection to the router, or straight to the modem?Yes, I do connect to the internet wirelessly. What is the wireless "switch", can I find it on my laptop, or on the modem?

The internet works on my laptop when it is wired diectly to the modem. It may be switch not being on...

Quote
There's a slider switch on the lip of the notebook. If you look down at your keyboard, in the middle of the closest edge to you is a slot which the lid clips into. If you look under the notebook in the same position, there's a slider switch. One side has the little wifi icon - the computer with the little curvy things round it. The other one doesn't have the curvy thing. If you slide it from one side to the other it enables or disables wifi.

Where is the router in this picture? The wireless switch is on, the switch is slanted toward the wifi signal.

I have an all-in-one gateway. It serves as a modem and a router.Any errors in Device Manager regarding wireless adapter?
Did you try to reinstall its driver?I went to Device Manager, and there was one Bluetooth device that was crossed out under Network.adapters. It was called Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI) was crossed out because it was disabled. I enabled it and the prbolem still occurs.

I have not tried to reinstall its driver. How do I start that process?Maybe this laptop doesn't have wireless adapter. How old is it? What model of ThinkPad?My laptop is a Thinkpad T60.It looks like your wireless adapter may be busted.
You may need to buy PCMCIA wireless card - about $20.

Solve : Port Forwarding for Router EchoLife HG520s?

Answer»

I just bought a 2nd hand router EchoLife HG520s. Unfortunately there was no manual/brochure. Could somebody please help me setup the port forwarding for this router? We will be using this router on our 2 computers through ethernet cables. Your immediate help will be much appreciated. Thank you very much.See here: http://portforward.com/
It's listed under Huawei routers. To Broni: I have checked the http://portforward.com as you have said. Under Huawei, I have checked the EchoLife HG520s, however, there is nothing there except that they are urging people to buy their Pfconfig product. Is there other technical advice how I can setup my EchoLife HG520s? Thank you very much. After clicking on EchoLife HG520s on the first page, click Click here to skip this advertisement... in the right top corner on the next page.
That will lead you to the next page:
Welcome to our GUIDE list for the Huawei EchoLife-HG520s. Please select the program you are forwarding ports for from the list below. To Broni: Thanks for your advice. Sorry I did not NOTICE the top right corner statement. Anyway, I was able to setup my Huwaie EchoLife Hg520s router port forwarding. One more question, how can I setup port forwarding in my other computer? If you notice, I think the procedure given is only for one computer. Again thanks and hope for your advice.I'm glad, it worked for you
Once you open any port, using port forwarding, it's open for all computers connected to that router. If you use some different program on different computer, you can simply open another port for that particular program. To Broni: Thanks for your technical assistance, I really appreciate it. Now our two computers have port forwarding. More power to you.Cool To Broni and other computer experts: I have a problem with my port forwarding. Eversince I have setup my port forwarding (and my urorrent is running faster), I have noticed that I cannot browse to other websites, (they are very, very slow to open). When I remove my port forwarding setup, my browsing became normal. So, it means that my port forwarding is affecting my browsing. Is there a solution for this? Please help. Thank you very much.Do you have uTorrent open at the same time?
If so, depending on your connection type, and computer specs, it may slow down your browsing. To Broni: Yes my Utorrent is open at the same time that I am browsing and I cannot open any websites or very, very slow to open. My DSL speed is 256 kbps, my OS is Win XP Prof SP3, my LG laptop is 2.0 Ghz, pentium 4, 100 GB HDD, with a memory of 1 GB. Is there a way I can use my Utorrent port forwarding and still browse the web with normal speed? Thanks for any suggestion. Are you connected wirelesly? Are there any other computers connected at the same time.
You have rather low DSL speed, so it may be normal in your case, but I'll know more, when you answer my questions.
Also, go here: http://www.speedtest.net/, and report speed TEST results. To Broni: No I am not connected wirelessly, I am connected THRU ethernet cable. We have only two (2) computers (me and my son) connected in the router and both are connected thru ethernet cable. As per speed test, my download speed is 248 kbps (or Kbps) and my upload speed is 120 kbps (or Kbps). Also, the download speed and upload speed of my son's computer is almost the same as mine. Just to recap, I cannot open any websites or very slow to open while my utorrent is downloading and when I turn off my utorrent, my brwosing speed became normal. Thank you for your help.Well, it looks like typical Catch 22.
Your DSL package provides pretty low download speed, and without upgrading to some better speed package, there is really not much you can do about it.
For now, you won't be able to browse, and to use uTorrent at the same time without experiencing slowness. To Broni: Thanks for your technical comment, I thought there is another way or solution in order that I will be able to use the utorrent while browsing the web with normal speed. Thanks again.

Solve : Network 3 computers one won't accsess the others?

Answer»

Hi,
I have 3 computers.
Computer 1
Intel Celeron 2.4gz
2 gb ram
Wired to the NETWORK
Windows Xp Home

Computer 2
Windows Xp media center 2002
1.0ghz intel p3
1gb ram
wireless

Computer 3
Windows Vista 64bit
2.2ghz amd phenom quad
6gb ram
wireless or wired

The two xp computers can not access the other computers in the network all the TIME. But the vista can access them. Most of the time when I click on view workgroup computers. I get this error message:

Bighome is not accessible. You might have no PERMISSION to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the SERVER to find out if you have access permissions. No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time there are already as many connects as the computer can accept.

I am not sure if it has something to do with my router or not. I have the linksys wrt160n. I have disabled all firewalls and anti virus and still the same problem. I have vista password SHARING off. Any other Ideas on how to fix this?Obviously there is something missing or crosswired.
You should not have these problems. Why don't you start over.

I would reset the Router to Factory Settings, and follow the Start-up procedures.

Then on the XP boxes I would follow step by step the instructions:

"Set up a wireless network for a home or small office"

and

"add a networkplace"

That should solve the problem.I have reset my network like 3 times. I have now found out that as soon as the vista computer comes into the picture, the whole network stops working. I think it has something to do with vista's added security.

Solve : My computer's administrator is gone!! Don't understand enough about Networking!?

Answer»

I have two desktop computers in my home. Basically one for the kids and one for the adults. However, things have changed and I am the only one USING the computers. The computer's administrator can't help me and now I'm having issues with the computer. I can't access some files, some WEBSITES, some mail accounts and I have "LOST" ALL of the Internet connections that we on both computers sometime last fall. I have been working on cleaning up both desktops and digging out viruses and SPYWHERE with someone on this site. I'm about clean on both and wanted to know if you can help me understand the Network CONFIGURATION of my machines and whether or not they are networked together? Or were they? Do I want them to be? Can I 'find' all the "hidden files" and make them visible again or delete them? In order for you to work with me on this I will post more information on each machine. Tell me if you can help and what I need to do.

Solve : Wireless Laptop Connection Problem?

Answer»

i have Trendnet TEW-432BRP wireless ROUTER that i use at home.
i have the SSID Broadcast disabled.
i use WPA2 Authentication, PSK, TKIP
my laptop is a dell inspiron 1525.

now the PROBLEM: when i try to connect wirelessly, it wont connect unless i enable the SSID Broadcast. After i enable it and connect, then i can disable the ssid broadcast and my laptop will stay connected until i restart. Does anyone have any idea why this is and what i COULD do to not have to enable the SSID Broadcast everytime i try to connect with my laptop? Why are you disabling SSID broadcast? so the SSID wont be broadcasted. haI just tried disabling SSID Broadcast in my D-Link DI-524 router and then restarting my notebook PC. No worky. So, I get the same results as you.

I have book on networking that says, "For a more secure network, you can disable this function. Then, a wireless client must already know the network's SSID in order to join the network."

I don't know how you go about making your wireless client remember the SSID, but that's what seems to be needed here. PERHAPS someone else will have some advise to give. well, even if i type in the ssid, it still wont connect. my vista laptop connects with no problem. i jus find it STRANGE how it wont connect unless ssid is enabled

Solve : internet explorer not working on wireless laptop?

Answer»

I have searched through the archives and can't seem to find an answer to my problem so I'm sorry if this is a repeat question.

I finally got my laptop working again - thanks Broni - but now my internet won't work. My desktop is connected to a ROUTER and I am trying to set up wireless access on my laptop. I believe I set it up correctly - it says that I have a wireless network connection to my router. I entered the SSID and WEP key but every time I try to open IE it requests my router username & password (Linksys WRT54g router). I enter the CORRECT information - I even made sure that I had it right by going to the IP addresss and verifying. My home web address shows up but there is no information, not even connection issues. I pinged Google and got this:

I've tried connecting directly to the modem but even that doesn't work. My desktop is directly connected to the router so I don't think anything's wrong with it. I'm at a loss and would appreciate help - again. Thanks in advance.
Well, you defintelly have a connection.
Did you try FIREFOX?I haven't tried Firefox but how would I download it if I don't have internet access? It says that I have a wireless connection but now I am getting the page cannot be displayed error and when I try to type in a web address it tells me that IE could not open search page. I noticed that my wireless network keeps having to acquire signal and is not automatic when I boot up. ALSO, whenever I look at the properties for my router it says disabled and I have to change it to WEP and enter my key. Is that why when I view wireless networks mine says unsecured? It will finally connect after I change the setting and enter the key but I am still unable to access the internet.

I set my internet protocol to use the specific IP address and subnet mask that's ASSOCIATED with my router instead of automatically finding the address and that's the only way it seems to be able to acquire a signal strong enough for me to even try to get connected. When I change it back to automatic, there is limited or no connectivity even though my signal strength is excellent.

I'm obviously doing something wrong but I don't know what that is. Thanks for any help.

Download it on working computer, and transfer it with USB memory stick.Once again, Broni, you are a genius! For some reason, Internet Explorer wouldn't work on my laptop but Firefox does. I really appreciate all the help. You're very welcome
However, I'd like to find out, what's the problem with IE.
What IE version?I believe it's version 6 - my husband is using the laptop now so I can't look. But after I was able to use Firefox it asked me if I wanted to upgrade to version 7, which I haven't. Didn't want to mess up a good thing. I also downloaded Avast for my anti-virus which is working fine as well. PCSS seems to be working okay on my desktop and I guess I'll keep it for now.

It's nice to know that there are places like this to get help. Broni, you need to change your experience level to guru! Thanks again. You're very welcome
I'll change my experience level to guru, when I'll know EVERYTHING.....LOL

When you have a chance, try IE repair: http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_reinstall_ie_and_oe_6.htm

Solve : file sharing between laptop and Desktop?

Answer»

So, I have an Asus eee that I want networked (through a wire) to my desktop so that I can reliably access such features like a 1 terabyte hard drive and a dvdrom. I almost have it working, my set up, as best as I can tell is like this:

I have a wireless network ADAPTER on the desktop which connects to a router.
I have a wifi card in the laptop which connects to the router.
I have a cable (not sure of name ) that connects the ethernet ports of the desktop to the netbook.

Now on the netbook I see two networks: LAN and Wireless internet connection.

On the Desktop I see three: Lan, 1394 connection (underneath it SAYS 1394 net adapter) and Wireless Network connection 4 (underneath it say Lynksys Dual band Network adapter). Lynksys is the one that I know I am using to access the internet. The LAN is connected between the desktop and netbook as when I unplug the cable I get the "cable unplugged" message on both pcs. All networks show as connected.

Right now I can share files...through the wireless connection. If I go into the settings of the wireless networks and turn off file sharing, but leave on file sharing on the LAN network I can no longer share these same files/drives.

How can I make it so that I am sharing these files through the LAN network and not the wireless network?

BTW the error I get when I try to open the files after disabling file sharing on the wireless network is that the file path was not found.

Additionally, I am trying to access shared files through "My Network Places"

Thank you for any assistance, I really feel like I'm in a bit over my head with this.

Why are you connecting/networking computers two different ways? I see no need for the cable (I think you mean a crossover cable) that connects the ethernet ports of the desktop to the netbook. I don't want to share so many (sensitive) files over the wireless connection, I also only want the files shared between the two specific computers, not every computer that connects to the network. Additionally I was under the impression that data transfer speeds would be higher on an ethernet cable than a wifi connection, but perhaps this is incorrect.Quote from: keybowvio02 on March 08, 2009, 04:59:28 PM

And, those are your two computers, right? And, you have no other computers?

So, when you say:

... not every computer that connects to the network.
What computers are you talking about? Okay, so we have a main desktop in the LIVING room, this one is connected to the wireless router. Then my dad, two brothers and mom all have their own laptops. Additionally I have a desktop and a netbook. I would prefer if I could have it so that all my other family members did not have access to all my files, and originally I thought that the easiest way to this would to be just stick a cable between the two that I want to share files, perhaps I am mistaken though.

Solve : Wireless Security?

Answer»

Just want to know if there is any way to check that no one is using my wireless without my knowledge. Other than changing my password every few months cos I have an amazingly simple retarded one that I like at the moment.I don't believe there's any way to tell. I'll be happy to be WRONG, though.Exactly what password are you talking about? Do you have WPA wireless security enabled?Yes you can, at least in my case.
I have a U.S. Robotics ROUTER and it gives me three places to check.
One is the DHCP allocation section that shows the IP Addresses and MAC Addresses for DYNAMIC Allocation.
The second PLACE is the Wireless connection section.
The third one is the Trace Log, if enabled.
Hope that helps.

And an other place to check, if have it, is the Apache Server Access log.
And ALSO if you have XP, there is the Windows Firewall log that displays Dropped Packets or Successfull Connections. To prevent outsiders from accessing your network, you need to have WPA wireless security enabled, with a strong password.

Solve : Network dial up puter to high speed puter??

Answer»

I live in dial up only land but my Mom has just had comcast high speed installed. I'd like to bring my desktop computer(s) to her house to update and download programs. I'm a little lost on how to connect. I don't actually need to connect them as a network because I just want to use her cable. I tried to just connect the cable to my comp but the only option showing is LAN which has limited or no connectivity and cannot repair itself. Making a new connection does not help. If I connect the cable back to moms computer it works instantly and perfectly. My computer is only showing a dial up modem and communications cable to connect two computers.
Can you tell me what the next step is? What do I need to do or buy? Is there something wrong or missing in my computer? The cable internet was set up by PROS and installed the cable modem and bundled her cable TV, high speed net and telephone.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!More info WOULD be helpful. Your OS? Did you connect the cable from your mother's Cable modem to an onboard LAN port on your computer, or do you have an add-on card installed for LAN card/Ethernet adapter? If using onboard LAN connector, is it enabled in the BIOS? Exactly what is your computer's initial response when you connect the cable? My OS is WINDOWS XP Pro, Moms is XP Home.

Yes, I just unplugged it from hers and connected to mine while I had the network connections page open. The connection attemps to connect after plugging in the cable but kicks back the limited to no connection ERROR message.
I had perviously established a dial up connection between the same two computers and it worked with a parallel cable.

Under device mamager shows I have SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet adapter, enabled, working with no conflicts. Under Modems I have SoftV92 Data/Fax modem and parellel cable.

Does that help? Need more info?

Solve : phone makes internet go down?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

I have DSL internet connected in my little BROTHER's room to a lynksys wrt150 n wireless router. We just got a new phone and we moved the old phone into my parent's bedroom. But now WHENEVER they go to use the phone in their bedroom, the dsl goes down (modem's dsl light blinks slowly until phone is hung up then comes back) I don't KNOW what could be causing this and could use some SUGGESTIONS, it would be very helpful! Thanks! The new telephone is causing RFI (radio frequency interferance) because it is OPERATING on a frequency very near you wireless routers. Change the channel on the router from 2 to 6 or visa versa. That should correct the problem.

Good Luckis the old phone & dsl connection are on the same phone number?

if it is, i suspect it's the splitter.

Solve : Internet Browsing at Work?

Answer»

I know you can install linux on a thumb drive and while in there surf the web with no LOCAL pc files being written, it all goes to the thumb drive.

So the question is... You're a tech at a private mid-sized company, the owner suspects a user of excessive or innapropriate web USE. The company either does not run a server that logs usage, or all the PCs have independant CONNECTIONS direct to the firewall/router. Is there any way to track past usage?

I am guessing calling the ISP will not help as short of a warrant I would not expect them to turn over anything. I know there are systems that can be PUT in place for future RECORDING, but is the past gone forever???

Solve : Problem w/ file sharing & security permissions... do you have what it takes??

Answer»

1. Four computers, all are running XP Pro/SP3.
2. All stations on same workgroup
3. Simple file sharing turned OFF on all stations
4. Can see all stations in workgroup
5. Cannot access each other in browser; error msg: "\\(name) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource..."
6. I AM the administrator and logged on as such at each station
7. Using Westell 327W router VIA Verizon DSL
8. Two stations connecting via ETHERNET cable, two via wireless
9. Guest accounts turned OFF on all stations
10. All can ping each other.
11. Windows firewall turned OFF on all stations
12. All stations running McAfee Anti-virus, configured for file-sharing
13. In sharing/security tab, cannot see other computers to manipulate permissions
14. NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on all stations
15. Internet connection works on all stations
16. All users have unique accounts at each station
17. Each user's login/password is identical at each station (but not to each other, of course)
18. "Routing and remote access" disabled on all stations
19. IP Addresses are dynamically assigned. I couldn't figure out how to ASSIGN static addresses (or to disable DHCP) on my router.
20. Station #1 to #2, #3, #4: OK
21. #2 to #1, #4: asks for a login and password ()
22. #2 to #3: Access denied to folder (although I can see it in the workgroup).
23. #3 to #1, #4: OK
24. #3 to #2: Access denied to folder (although I can see it in the workgroup).
25. #4 to #1, #3: OK
26. #4 to #2: Access denied to folder (although I can see it in the workgroup).
27. I tried going into sharing and security for the folder I'm trying to SHARE on #2 and I can't see other locations to add specific permissions.
28. Printer sharing works fine...check out the folder properties that you're trying to access. There should be a sharing tab and a security tab (if using ntfs). Make sure that both of them are configured to allow read/write for the users you're trying to access with. If they're not, it will default to the most restrictive set of rules.

Solve : changed Internet provider, NOW one of the three computers WILL not get online.?

Answer»

Our household CHANGED providers, but my desktop won't get on line. My desktop and laptop BOTH RUN XP SP3, and use TP-LINK WIRELESS cards. My laptop gets on-line FINE ( although the IP address is different than the one provided by our NEW ISP ). I have attempted all kinds of different configurations for both the network card AND the Windows wireless network.

I tried contacting TP-LINK, but I could not understand what the 'tech support' was telling me. He said he'd email instructions ... but hasn't.

Before the change, ALL three of the computers had NO PROBLEM accessing the internet ... NOW the main computer gets on FiNE - it has the wired connection. My laptop will get on FINE thru the wireless connection at the main computer ... but my DESKTOP will not.

MAIN: Dell Inspirion (I think) running XP
DESKTOP: custom-built Dell XP SP3, TP-LINK wireless network card (353G), VIA chipset, NVIDIA GeForce 5200, Realtek AC '97 audio,
LAPTOP: Dell C610 running XP SP# and TP-LINK wireless card

ANY ADVICE WILL BE APPRECIATED!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!Does the desktop computer see the wireless network?
Does the desktop computer have the same ip address range as the the other MACHINES?
Can the desktop ping the other machines (Start > Run> CMD then type in Ping
BTW, after some re-configureing of MY wireless card ( IP address, DNS flushing, other DOS commands ) I am NOW able to get on the internet with our NEW ISP. THANKS FOR HELPING!!!!!!!!

I'm not ABSOLUTELY sure what you're asking. Are you asking whether you'll need to add a device to your laptop in order for it to receive a wireless signal from your router? Practically all new LAPTOPS on the market in recent years have built-in wireless capability.

Solve : Problem with ethernet?

Answer»

Hello, I have a Gateway E 4100 RUNNING windows XP pro. When i use my network providers installation CD, I get to the part were it tells me to plug my ethernet cable in so that it can finish the installation. But It does not detect it. The light comes on around the ethernet plug in and the COMPUTER detects that there is a internet CONNECTION. What can I do? What exactly are you TRYING to install, and why?
Normally, you don't install anything. You just hook up the ethernet cable, and the connection is right there.

We'll I've had problems with many of my computers and this one stumped me I usualy can google up an answer and fix it within 30 minutes, but after weeks of problems with this one THING I finaly gave up and need help from the smarter people.

OS: Windows XP
Computer: Dell INSPIRON E1505
Intel Type: Intel Wireless wi-fi link 4965agn Driver

Problem: First of all my intel Wireless STARTED up by itself and then It didn't. So I went to C:\Program

Files\Intel, Inc\ProInst\Wi-Fi Startup\Bin. And double clicked on Start Wi-Fi, and then it came up working.

Then after a little more time when I double clicked the Start Wifi it wouldn't show up on my TOOLBAR with the

Green looking fan Icon it had. But I still had wi-fi and ignored not having anything. No when I click on the

Start Wi-fi it does not start up all it does act like its going to load and then exit out. Now i got suspicions of

this loading and exit out so I went to the task manager and looked at the proccesses. It said that i had 49

proccesses but when I double clicked on Start Wi-fi it would go to 50 proccesses and then back down to 50.

The one procces that popped up and disappeared was "Start Wi-Fi.exe". And now I can open up my wireless

network list from the Control Panel and networks are open, I try to connect and it takes along time then it

says "Connected" but the on the toolbar it says "Not connected" So i try to go to IE and it still will not work.

Solve : Networking a printer??

Answer»

I'm running XP on my desktop pc and Vista on my laptop. I've followed all the steps and I have my printer set up on my desktop to share but when I try to add a network printer to my laptop it says it can't connect to the printer.

What am I doing wrong? I'm using a Netgear router and my printer is an HP Photosmart.

Thanks!

AmandaNever mind. I finally figured it out. This Vista is more DIFFICULT than XP. Can you share with us what you found to be the solution?I found this on the INTERNET and just followed the steps. It works perfectly now.

Click Add Printer
Then add local printer ( I know its not local but its the easiest WAY around this on Vista)
Create New Port
Local Port
When PROMPT with a window to type in the local port, just simply put
\\NAMEOFCOMPUTER\nameofprinter

Ie, the name of the computer that has the printer hooked up to it is SERVER and the name of the printer is DellLaser, then it would be \\SERVER\DellLaser
Thanks for the response. I have the same scenario as you. It's been quite awhile since I added the printer to my Vista notebook PC but your procedure sounds familiar. GLAD to hear you're up and running.

Solve : ssid network problem!?

Answer»

hi hope you can help as am baffled I recently tried to change the ssid name on my wireless network, but couldn't connect to it under its new name so DECIDED to change it back to its ORIGINAL name.
But when i tried to reconnect to the network it wouldn't connect,I have another laptop which I use which is working perfectly.
So i figure its not the router,I tried a system restore but that didn't work so I figure its not the windows files...
Am using windows VISTA on the laptop that won't work and xp on the one that does....tried all the simple stuff like re-entering the ssid and network key over and over and also resetting the router, but with no results .
I would appreciate any help...!

PS should also mention that my laptop picks up the broadcast signal but can't seem to identify the network ,even though I have entered the correct ssid and network keys and set the encryptions to the correct SETTINGS.....It is not clear why you want to do
and if you have the authority to do it.

Does you laptop have an Ethernet jack on it?
If so, try getting into the router directly. And unplug everything else from the router.
Power up the router, reset the laptop.
Now you can get into the router and change what you want. Use the numeric IP of the router. And he user and password you created earlier. Or the default password.I tried to reset it using the RJ cable connection and going into the router still doesn't work.....

Solve : Can my wife and I share files between computers??

Answer»

My wife and I run off the same router and rather than her emailing me hundreds of pictures of our 5 month old, is there a WAY me can connect the computers to move the files more easily? What operating systems do you use on the computers?I use Vista and she has XP...Vista: In Control Panel, click on NETWORK and Internet for instructions on how to set up file sharing. My file sharing is on, but how do I work it, I guess is my question?
try to open the "My network places" on the start menu,
then look for "sharedDocs on (wife's computer name)"

then you can now copy your files into that folder.

if she wants to look for the files you've shared,

then she must look into "My Computer"/shared documents on the start menu.

Not too big on this, but don't you have to make sure you're both on the same Workgroup and set up a My Network Places sharing file?yes for example if shes wife you have to be as well, it so that if multiple workgroups were created it adds some control.No.
The sharing PC's do not have to be of the same WorkGroup, at least on my LAN.
I have a mix of WorkGroups and a mix of XP, W2k. Works fine.
I don't know if Vista would work fine if it were hooked up to my Lan. Is that so, I dont know what your doing but I had issues with that unless you have in more cards and rj45 connectors.Hey squall,

I just put it to the test again: Renamed one WorkGroup at will. Restarted the PC and got access as usual to the other two. The other two had access to the "Renamed" WorkGroup.
The only problem (for me) is "Remote Desktop", they must be on the same WorkGroup.
All THREE have individually access to the Router, not one hooked up to another.
Under MS, check "My Network Places", there it should show all the Shared Files
and "Microsoft Windows Network" there it should show the WorkGroups. Quote from: MikeOdd on February 20, 2009, 10:34:31 AM
