Tried resetting everything, running the ip config sequence, and the winsock fix(I think, long story) but I still can't connect. Can some one please help, I'm at my wits end. My ipconfig/all info is below...

If it was working, and if you did not change anything, this would indicate that something has happened to the local service provider. Which can be more frequent that it should be.
If the thing says it is connected, then what do you get for IPCONFIG at the command line?
Can you 'ping' any major sites?

In the address bar of your browser type:
68.180.206.184
That would bring up a Yahoo page.
Even if you DNS is not working.I'm not sure what you mean by what does it say for IPCONFIG at the command line...when I type in that command I get the same information as included in my original post.

I cannot ping any sites and even when I typed in the information you provided in the address bar, I still got nothing but the not connected error message.Got it fixed, thanks! I found a site that recommended disabling the firewall and then trying. wouldn't you know, something as SIMPLE as that worked. Though I will be looking into why my Trend Micro Firewall is even keeping me out.

Thanks for your suggestion!Quote

Trend Micro

Nome everybody likes that company, but many do.

On this forum AVAST and AVG seem to be the most POPULAR. I have found either to be very good.

Solve : Wireless Security Questions??

Answer»

1. I use WPA with a decent mix of letters numbers and caps in my password but I would like to know if there is any program out there with the POTENTIAL to BYPASS this no matter what password I use, as with WEP. And if so what could I do to prevent it? I've followed the advice of more than one wireless security guide but can't SHAKE the feeling someone could still get in.

2. Can anyone who uses my signal still see my internet history even if my router doesn't store that information.

3. on the same note I'd like to ask what "ENABLE Wireless Protected Setup (WPS)" is. This is a fairly new option in my router config page.

thanks1.) yes

2.)If they have GOOD hacking skills mabye

3.) no ideaQuote

1.) yes
does this include WPA2?Probably but its breakable very very easily. Not genna get into that though

Solve : My Vaio won't access the internet anymore!?

Answer»

We have 2 Vaio laptops one purchased January 2008 (black) and the other Nov 2008 (pink). They both have wireless capability and the black laptop when we BOUGHT it connected to the internet just fine. My husband deployed overseas and it still worked. But now it won't connect, it connects to the network but won't actually ACCESS the internet. It just brings up the "Internet Explorer can not display" page. The pink one connects just fine. I have gone through the network wizzard and it trys to resolve the problem but all it ends up doing is telling me to connect through a cable, which it will connect this way but we want to access with the wireless. Please help!!Turn off computer. DISCONNECT router, and modem from power SOURCE for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start SEARCH in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log

Solve : New dell laptop wont connect to network?

Answer»

I drove down the street last night with the laptop and was able to connect to a wireless network. I guess the new laptop just wont communicate with the CABLE companies crappy wireless modem I have. I went and bought a linksys wireless router lastnight which I will hook up today. My question is should I take BACK the wireless modem to the cable company and get a regular modem now that I will be using the linksys. I ask this becuse I don't want that other unsecure network that I don't USE just sitting there for neighbors to grab.Wait... your moden is a wireless modem? modem and wireless all in ONE?Yeah Its all in one box. So anyway I returned the wireless modem to the cable company and got a regular one. Got my linksys hooked up and I'm all set. Much stronger signal and my connection is SECURE. Still don't know why the other modem did'nt work but oh well. Thanks for all the help. ,Bob
Good news Weird... The wireless musta been really bad on that. I will know to stay away from those. Well Im glad you got it working!

Solve : Help with wireless home network please!?

Answer»

I am trying to install a router and a wireless NETWORK to my home computer so I can USE the internet on my laptop through wireless. I have the router hooked up and I ran the wireless network setup wizard. It all worked fine I thought. When I try to connect on my laptop, there is a little yellow triangle with an explamation point over the top of the little monitor picture on the bottom right corner of my screen. When I park on it it says:

Wireless connection
Speed: 54 MBPS
Signal strength excellent
Status: limited or no connectivity

When I click on it to get the wireless connection status up, then click on the support tab, it says "you might not be able to access the internet. This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer"

I clicked on repair and it tried to repair it but a box comes up that says "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed:

RENEWING your IP address

I am not sure where to go from here. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. I am using XP home with the service pack 3 on both PC's. Thanks!!!!you need to set your adaptor to Obtain an IP address automatically

http://www.wolfson.cam.ac.uk/computers/roomconnection/setdhcp/windowsxp.html

Ok, I followed your link and went through all of that. Nothing needed to be changed, it all was already the way it should be according to the link. Any other ideas?

Thank you for taking the time to help me with this. I will be very surprised but HAPPY if someone can help me successfully. You can reset your ip to a static (univerasal) ip and it hsould work. i had the same problem with mine and i at least got that problem fixed.

click on your start menu; go to control panel; click on network and internet connections; scroll down and click on network connections; right click your wireless network connection; click on properties; in general view second box youll see internet protocol (tcp,ip) left click on it to hightlight it then click properties; click on "use the following ip address" put in 192.168.1.100 subnet mask should be 255.25.255.0 default gateway 192.168.1.1 hope this workd for you!Hi there,

Solve : Wireless Change On A Large Scale?

Answer»

The company I work for has an affiliate that has DECIDED to change their wireless information (SSID and from WEP to WPA). Is there a way to change this to all of my mobile device without having to touch every one? Is there a script, custom GPO, registry export trick or anything I can do? We are currently running a 2003 Server environment and all devices are Windows XP SP2.I'm not yet a server expert, but, in short, no, not really.

Send an email out to all employees with the PASSWORD, and detailed instructions on how to get it all set up. (Include pictures, some people just dont get how any of that works!)

If you work with "boxes" in your office, where everyone has their own box, you might consider printing out informational text and distributing it into those boxes, SINCE, emailing it, people wont realize that when their wireless stops working, they will loose their email.

On a security level that is just unacceptable....... That's putting all of our information to widely available to the people who have no need to know it and creates a huge security risk.

I am actually looking at using a GPO along with a registry export to make the change. They can just view the wireless password by finding it in the wireless configuration.

And what happens if someone disconnects, and needs to reconnect? They will have to get it eventually.

I will say this:
Make sure the password is different from WEP code, since, WEP can be hacked in about, oh, 40 seconds or so. If someone in your area has done this, the code would already be out.
Second, make sure, and this is a bit obvious, that you "push" out the wireless code information before you do the SWITCH, otherwise no one will be connected to the network when it happens.
That could also be a problem if you have many users disconnected from the domain, you might consider updating group policy with registry edit a few days before the switch if its possible.

Solve : Sudden Lost of Connectivity?

Answer»

Computers in my house is connected to the INTERNET via a broadband ADSL model with a 8-port switch.

Sometimes my computer cannot connect to the internet (could not BROWSE any website) all of a sudden. It has no SIGN or any SYNDROME according to my observation. While my computer is in trouble, the others computers in my house may or may not be able to connect (browse) at the same time. So this is weird.

The workaround is to turn off the modem and on again. This works everytime.

What could be the problem here?

Thanks. Bad modem? The modem is quite new i.e. less than one year old, and unfortunately I don't have a spare modem to test...Your ISP should REPLACE the modem for free, if there is any problem with it.

Solve : Severly depressed download & upload speeds?

Answer»

I have Hughesnet satellite, their least expensive version, which is supposed to give me 1.0 Mbps download and 128 Kbps upload. I have never in the 6 months that I've had it gotten anywhere near 1.0 Mbps download speed. It usually runs between 78kbps to 128kbps. But, it was still faster than the 25 to 46 kbps that I previously got with a phone modem. I could live with it. BUT, recently, it was fallen to as low as 5.46kbps. Took me nearly 5 minutes to download 3.57 MB today and kept refusing to upload the same EMAIL file when I wanted to send it out. I tested the speed on Speedtest.net and their results were: Download: 1037kbps and Upload: 230 kbps. I checked the System Status on Hughesnet and the Signal Strength was just fine and there isn't a cloud in the sky. I have a 233 GB hard drive of which 206 GB is Free Space and 2 GB of Memory. My email is through AOL's free email service. Can anyone give me any ideas on what could be the problem with the download and upload speeds. I really dislike calling Hughesnet because their Help Desk is routed to India and as sharp as their troubleshooters are there, I can't understand hardly a word they say.The download speeds you quoted from speedtest.net look about right for a 1mb connection ...... what are you judging your downloads with .... i.e. where are you downloading from ?, as it's often the case with host SERVERS that their speeds are POOR and not yours.he's probably getting that NUMBER from the Download screen on his Navigator...

if thats were your getting that 5.46Kbps, then its probably that the server from where your downloading is slow, not you.First, thanks for your replies, Old Fart and MacDad. I am getting the information for my download speeds from the little window that pops up when I start downloading a .pps or .wmv file attachment from an email. I don't download movies or music files. I have noticed that when I am typing an email that the finished product is full of run together words and missed letters because it doesn't SEEM to be keeping up with my typing and I am not a fast typist. 45wpm and 60wpm on a good day. As I type this, I am not having that sort of problem. AOL is my mail server. Do you think that AOL is the problem? It is their free email program if that makes a difference.AOL is going down the toliet anyways which means slower servers from small inflow of subscribers.....how about Gmail?

Solve : Email problems on my home network?

Answer»

Hi. I set up a wireless home network today between my desktop and laptop. It all works well except my email. When the desktop is on only I get email fine. When I have both computers on, any new email only goes to the laptop. I would like new email to appear on both computers when they come in. It is a Netgear G router, both computers use WinXp and Outlook for email. Thanks for any help

TimWhat kind of email is this?
Webmail? IMAP? POP3?
What program do you use to check it?pop3
I use Outlook to check email.

THanks. You have to go to using IMAP.
Which Outlook?
Must you use Outlook?
Do you have control of the mail server?
I mean can you change it to forward mail to another address?
Can you force it to leave mail on the server?
POP3 normally goes to just one user and "pop" its gone!
But with some systems you can set it up so that is almost like IMAP, if you can not get real IMAP.Geek-9pm hit the nail on the head...

POP3 is a very, very old protocol, and works in many funky ways, including:
After your email has been downloaded, it is deleted from the server by default by your client.

IMAP is really one of the best protocols out there at this time, in my opinion, and most POP3 SERVERS provide is as well.
IMAP not only ALLOWS you to manage folders, but, it moreover "Syncs" your inbox than it does just downloads the emails, making it better for use on multiple computers.
Quote from: Timy on February 21, 2009, 06:52:03 PM

When I have both computers on, any new email only goes to the laptop.
This part doesn't make sense. Apparently, you have the laptop set to automatically retrieve email at certain time intervals, but not the other computer. If both computers are ONLINE and both are set to to automatically retrieve email at certain time intervals, then whichever one gets it first will be the only one getting those particular messages with POP mail and where your email account settings in neither computer are set to leave messages on the server.

I agree with Geek-9pm and Zylstra. If you really want to capture all messages in both computers, then IMAP mail will work best for that. Hey Tiny I just made a email account for you to test.
It is:
[emailprotected]

Auto-Configure Microsoft Outlook Express® for IMAP Access
Code: [Select]REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager\Accounts\[emailprotected]]
"DCEmail"=dword:00000002

"IMAP Root Folder"=""
"IMAP Polling"=dword:00000001
"IMAP Poll All Folders"=dword:00000001
"IMAP Dirty"=dword:00000000
You can use this to run tests on the IMAPI.
I am curious to see if it works. It is NOT SSL.
The password is just 'tiny' because it is just for testing.
Geek-9pm, why the heck are you advising him to create an IMAP account via ENTRIES in Windows registry? Setting up an IMAP account is going to depend on whether his ISP or email service supports IMAP and the settings will be specified by them. And, the normal way of creating an IMAP account in his email client is to do it directly in his email client. What you're suggesting here SEEMS absurd.Sorry, that was only intended as a test for IMAPI.

That is the only way I knot of to do IIMAPI when using OE.
Maybe I missed something.
It would normally be done like this, as an example: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77659 Hey, soybean, that is good. I didn't know.

I have uninstalled the USB adapter and reinstalled it, unplugged the adapter and let it set at room temp for about 7 hours, and REPEATEDLY tried to re-enter the password with no success. Im sure ive supplied you with all the info. you will need, please help. Thank You.I dont know what happened, but i jsut tried again and out of nowhere it just was fixed. Solve : acquiring network address?

Answer»

When I put a wireless card in my old laptop, and it begins " acquiring network address " it takes an extremely long time. I KNOW networking is involved beyond a step by step here, but is there anythign simple I can look at?

Thanks
JoeThere's a lot you're leaving out here.

Are you connecting to your own wireless?
Is there a password on your wireless access?
Have you tried this wireless card in another computer?
Have you tried this wireless card with this computer in another location?
Have you tried another computer with wireless on this same network?
Have you tried another wireless card in your computer?"Old laptop"...what Operating System are you using?

Also, what KIND of interface is it? Have you got a serial, model number or any branding on it?

I don't suppose you know the specs of your laptop in question do you?

I'm afraid we'll need to know a shade more before we can point you in the right directions.

After conducting some research I found I could do it with a nifty program called Transfile WIN 200, which i downloaded. But Problem: It wouldn't link using the IR port on my computer to the IR port on the 200LX. Does anybody know if it is possible to to this?
Why do you want to link them?

It is possible, but I have to look after MS-DOS drivers and read more about... Connection between MS-DOS and XP. Man, you're giving US a very odd problem. Why do you need such a thing?I have this annoying habit of when I START something, I want to finish it. I wanted to put qbasic on the palmtop as well as I've written out some long documents on the palmtop I want to switch across.

I've tried everything to do with IR now, and that's not the solution.

In the palmtop manual, it gives pinouts for making a 200LX Serial to RS232 9 PIN serial port, (aren't old manuals wonderful? I'll be buggered if my new laptop's manual told me how to make a usb to IR port converter)

I'll try that...

Solve : What OS for Home File Server??

Answer»

I origanaly ran Win XP HOME on a Pentium III as my file server, when i got a dell PowerEdge Server i decided to get a OS that supported 2 processors, which mine has. I have a valid XP PRO license, but was told that CentOS is a more reliable, Linux based OS, that featured GNOME GUI, I LOVE ubuntu's GNOME GUI, but like the feel of windows, I just want a basic, print, file, and application sharing server, nothing too big or complicated

ThanksHow much time do you have to learn about a new operating system, other than Microsoft Windows? Yes, Linux/Unix/OS X/other operating systems are good, maybe better, maybe not, but they are fine when you know how to "play" with them. Before knowing you will have to study and experiment. Do you have time? Do you like to learn about a new operating system? Are you a system administrator/network administrator? Do you want to become one?

Of course there is ALSO the solution "jump in ocean and learn to SWIM", and I know some people that have that saying as motto.

Solve : Modem/router problem??

Answer»

Greetings everyone,
I'm not too smart when it comes to the field of networking. I've been having a problem recently with the computers on my network not being ABLE to access the internet. What I have to do is shut down the modem and the router for LIKE one minute and then I have to turn on the modem for 30 seconds and then the router. This seems to work most of the time but some times I'll have to repeat the steps about three times. Why is this? I just don't understand why I have to do this. Is there anyway I can like get around this?
My router is Netgear RangeMax WPNT834
and my modem is a speedstream 5100What will happen, if you bypass router, and connect one of your computers straight to the modem?
How are your computers connected, wireless, or hard-wire? How many computers? What Windows versions?I've never attempted to bypass the router but I can try that. We have one computer connected hard-wire and 2-3 connected via wi-fi. All windows XP SP2. My computer has two Ethernet ports so I have them both active. I've bridged the connections but I don't know if this even helps or is important.CHECK your network connections on your machine. Look at both NICs for a check box that says something like "Allow computer to shut down to save power" and uncheck it.

What maybe happening is your computer is shutting off the connection and when you reboot the router it comes BACK up.

Thanks
I have been having the same trouble for the past month. I have 3 pcs set up on my network. My connection will drop off from time to time. I looked ONLINE and reset my MTU to 1492, which is the highest setting for dsl. It seems to have worked but if anyone else has any ideas for correcting the problem I would love to know.

Solve : Dual-wire internet on same computer??

Answer»

I've heard that since my MOTHERBOARD has two internet plugs on it, I could plug two wires in and dedicate them to in/out seperately, largely increasing my connection speed. Is this true?

If yes, how do I do this? Simply plug them in the motherboard and in the router?

My motherboard is an ASUS P5N32-E-SLI.

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Your internet connection is most likely a lot slower than the max speed of even one Ethernet card. (Unless you happen to have a 100+ mbps internet connection.)
If this is the case your speed limitation is not your Ethernet port, but your internet connection. The only way to increase that speed is to order a FASTER connection from your ISP.Routing. Operating system that supports routing (LINUX, UNIX, Windows Server operating systems).

The increase is not dramatical, Deerpark advised you well. For small companies/home CONNECTIONS to have more than one connection is a brag - unless you have an 24/24 available Internet server in your LAN and you need redundant connections to internet.

Solve : How can I find what the problem is and fix it??

Answer»

I have an e-systems computer with windows xp home edition operating system. I recently tried to get the internet with virgin media. They sent me a modem and I installed it fine(I know this as it works fine with the laptop).

The PROBLEM I am having with my desktop computer is that I cannot connect to the internet. The problem seems to be highlighted by a "169" ip address(according to virgin tech support),

I called a pc technical support LINE and they told me it was either a faulty NETWORK card or a problem with windows. I had a new network card installed but I still cannot connect to the internet.

I need to know how to find the problem first of all before I can attempt to fix it.

thanks for any input.Try this>>>

I did exactly as you suggested it said:-

but still nothing. I did the ipconfig thing again when I restarted the computer, still says exactly the same thing as I posted above.

I do appreciate all the help, thanks very much.

Any other suggestions?

Try winsockxpfix: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
and lspfix: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
One at a time. Restart computer after each fix.Do you have a router? To which you connect the laptop and the desktop?

Maybe the modem "learn" the MAC address of the laptop, and when you connect the desktop you have to restart (keep it stopped for a few seconds) the modem, to "relearn" the "new" MAC address (of the computer). When you will connect again the laptop, you will have to restart the modem (if this is the issue).

Solve : Router blocking? or something else??

Answer»

I have been working on a problem for over 6 weeks now, burned out the tech support person(he had no idea), and others on other forums. After forwarding needed ports for some security cameras, it was suggested to check these ports using grc.com and the program shieldsup! All that program showed was all ports were "STEALTH." And the cameras can not be seen. That brought up another persons thought that a router makes all ports "stealthed." So I removed the router and went through the modem only. That should have made all the ports open when checking grc.com and shieldsup. It still shows all ports "stealthed."
So that brings up the question: Is the cable company doing something that is keeping all these ports "stealthed"? They insist they DO NOT block ANY ports.

KMCan you access the cameras from within the network? I.e. if you connect a computer to the same router as the cameras can you access to them directly? (Without having to go online or ANYTHING like that)I don't know about cable but satellite co's will run their signal through their firewall and you'll get the 'stealth' thing at GRC with no router & no firewall installed on your pc.

Alan <>< Do you have firewall running?DeerPark,

Yes, I can see the cameras on LAN. That gives me thought that the program that came with the video cards has a small server and it is working.

Broni,

All firewalls are off. Both the one in Windows XP pro and the one in the router.

KMThey shouldn't be in stealth mode if you properly forwarded them. The computer to which you forwarded those ports has a static IP? (I know, a very basic question).Viking,
Yes, the computer is set with a static IP. An example of the settings in the router under single port forwarding. Linksys WRT300N
Application name:
SuperDVR
External port:
8008
Internal port:
8008
Protocol:
Both
To IP address:
192.168.1.136
Enabled

It could not be understood why it was not working by the tech support guy after looking the computer over for almost 50 minutes. Should not show stealth, but they do. . . .

Katman
I assume that you are using the named SuperDvr application to watch those cameras.
Have you seen this: http://www.q-see.com/newwebsite-design/support/dvr-pci-support.htm#2 ?

I quote:-----
"NOTE: IF YOU ARE CONNECTING TO INTERNET USING ROUTER, YOU NEED TO GO THE SETUP OF THE ROUTER AND DO THE PORT FORWARDING. PORTS THAT NEED TO BE FORWARDED: 80, 1159, 1259 AND 13551. CHECK YOUR ROUTER MANUAL ON HOW TO SETUP THAT."
---- End of quoting

Of course, you have to apply to your particular case, you have to choose the right ports according to your SuperDVR application settings. I read in a very speedy way, so if this is not the solution you asked then please tell me and I will try to find more specific informations.

There is no firewall on the router? Or on the computer? It's strange that you forward the right ports to the right IP and they appear "stealth"; if the computer is accessible from outside of your network (from the wan part of your router, from grc site or other site that checks ports availability) and the application is stopped you will receive the message "port closed"; you receive the message "port stealth" when the icmp response message is not sent back to the source - check if you have this option disabled on the firewall (just for TESTS, not permanently; after you check, set it right, as you need it).

Be sure you don't have any firewall enabled (for the tests period)... You could have on that computer an antivirus with some firewall functions. This is the first thing I am thinking about: the firewall on the computer (because you say that when you directly connect the computer with the cameras to the modem those sites still respond with "port stealth" messages).

How do you check with others computers in your network? They are all connected to your wireless router or they are connected to your computer with the cameras and the server application? Do you have one or more networks in your LAN?

I downloaded the router manual, I am waiting for your message for further research.

Solve : Trap a wifi wardriver?

Answer»

Does anyone know of any tools to trap a wifi wardriver. We had a wireless network compomised in which our web filter saw that it was a user with a laptop and an external HD downloading porn through our corporate network.

I would like to find a way to be alerted when it happens again and go on a hunt to find the CULPRIT. I have the MAC address and user name of the laptop and as LONG as the moron is too stupid to not change that MAC Address I can find him, and link him up to the PROOF of unlawful unauthorized access on our business network in which he cracked the 128-bit WEP.

I have been tempted to build up a wide open bogus network and put TOGETHER some method of being alerted as a TRAP for a wifi wardriver when that MAC Address is detected on the network, then go around and find the moron and call the cops when a suspect is found.

In addition to this our network was probed very well from this individual, but our systems are secure not to allow access to any data THANK GOD!

Figured I'd post this to see if anyone else has seen any ways to trap a wifi connection, give them limited access to just the internet isolated from our corporate network, verify MAC address, and then notify authorities before?

Maybe I am a first at taking it this serious, but the idiot is stupid and has connected a few times to an idle disconnected from network Access Point as the log indicates. Now it looks like he may be riding in on a neighbors signal who is wide open, I havent notified, but we are getting probed for wifi when he is in the area on this stand alone Access Point.

Smart Wardrivers would never squat at the same place over and over again and would change system names and MAC addresses to stay anonymous. This person is going to get caught its just a matter of time, and I just need to find a way to be notified when the MAC address is detected as connected to a network.

Thanks!

Dave

Suggest you redirect your energy toward beefing up the security of your network. Perhaps use something stronger than WEP.When you turn a radio signal loose, it is loose.
There are a lot of wacky laws out there that defy common sense. You are looking to try to ENFORCE them, and that is just a mess.

Your best bet is to do the smart thing, and keep your signal off his antenna.

I agree with the above posts.
Redirect your efforts towards WPA2 encryption if possible, with MAC filtering and any other security features you have available.
I don't know if what you're proposing is possible, although I imagine with the right combination of rules (if your router has a built in firewall) you may be able to achieve some of what you want, i.e. limited access.
Also, for what it's worth you could report them to the authorities - just find the person and tell the cops where they are.

Solve : creating a wired network with a belking wireless g router?

Answer»

I have 2 computers, a dell running XP and a "mixed-breed" that runs windows 98. I want to connect them using the wireless router which has wired capabilities. The XP is using the router fine but the 98 with SE will not connect tot he internet? What can I do. There is a cable running form the XP to the router and from the router to the other computer.ok so make sure you are using the right kind of cable to start with. If the XP computer is working and the 98 one is not you might have two different kinds of cable. One is called a crossover and the other is a straight through connection. You can test this by swapping the cables, if practical. This will ALSO check to see if the one cable is just bad.

Next you need to make sure your settings in 98 are correct. here is a few things to check
1) does the computer see the lan card you are using? (in control panel, systems, hardware)
2) are the drivers up to date?
3) can you hook the modem directly up to the lan card and get internet?
4) can you see other network resources from the 98 computer? (IE the other computer)
5) when you look at the hardware do any of the system resources have a YELLOW or RED flag next to them? This would indicate a problem that needs to be addressed. It would help if from both your Windows 98 and XP machines you could enter the command "ipconfig" into a command prompt and cut and paste the results here.To Windows 98 the command is "winipcfg".Is Win98SE DHCP aware?

That might be the issue, might it not?

Solve : Home Networking?

Answer»

Ok, I have kind of a unique problem. I am trying to connect my laptop and my desktop so that I can share files and stuff. Simple, of course, get a crossover cable and connect that way. I have a different way I can do this and a little better I think but there are some little hiccups that I need help figuring out. I don't have an internet connection directly, by that I mean I get a WIRELESS connection from a PERSON who lives in my building. That's fine for my laptop. Now I ALSO have a wireless router with a 4 port switch. I would like to set my desktop and laptop up using my switch to get the shared access I am looking for. Now I really just need help figuring out how to set up the connections. If anyone has any ideas on how to do this I would appreciate the help. I think you will find that no one here will help you with this. You should LOOK into getting your own interenet and not log onto someone elses.

What about the person that's paying for you to use their internet access? Is there an agreement between yourselves? Or are you just stealing their bandwidth, and possibly sending them soaring over their download limits?

Solve : Windows XP Home General Connectivity issues?

Answer»

Hey guys...

I'm trying to help an old friend out with his machine...

It's:

P4
256MB RAM
XP Home SP 2

The problem seems to be connecting to any network.

Be it wireless, Ethernet, and even the modem doesn't seem to want to work properly.

I've got the machine at my house for the next week or so, and would like to return it working.

The problem is:

When trying to connect to a network it "connects" but you can't use the inet, and it drops the connection seconds later.

That was with WiFi, and with ethernet, it came up "limited or no connectivity" and again, no Inet ACCESS, couldn't even get to the ROUTER page.

The router he uses is one from Sky, which is also his ISP, I don't know what brand it is.

My plan is to rig it up in my house, and try to get it connected via my Router, something AOL sent me, a NetGear DG834G with an ethernet cable.

I'll probably set it up either later tonight or on Wednesday.

Any ideas as to where to start when it's all plugged in?

I could do a format reinstall, but since they MOVED they can't find the MS Office disks, and his kid seems to worship Powerpoint...so I'd prefer not to fmat, reinstall. (I know openoffice supports it, but it's meant to be about "the CLIENTS needs" isn't it...)

Cheers in advanced.

If you need more info, or want me to post the out comes of anything, just tell me, bluntly.

Cheers!Ok guys, just set it up at my house and here's what happens:

I booted it up, and waited till it was finished, then plugged the Ethernet cable into my router, and then the port (which was "hidden" by a blanking plate...) on the computer and while it's acquiring a network address a pop up comes up:

Title: jusched.exe - Bad image
Body: The application or DLL C:\windows\system32\mswsock.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.
Button: Ok.

So I clicked Ok, and it comes up 3 or 4 times, and then stops coming up...and the connection is left "acquiring network address".

Is that at all related?

Ok, just checked the IP settings, as DHCP is enabled on the router, changed over the IP settings to allow it to be configured by DHCP, and now it's coming up "Limited or no connectivity".

Oh, there is still no Link light at the back of the machine...

After changing the IP settings back to DHCP, I re-booted just to see if it might have an affect...

Still the same, limited or no connectivity, and when you click repair, a window pops up saying it can't complete the repair process because it can't renew the IP address.

You guys got any ideas?Sorry to keep posting so much...

I popped an Ubuntu 7.10 Live CD in, and got on-line without a problem.

So I guess I've written off a hardware failure.

Is that all I've done or is there some huge CLUE in that sentence?Try that "sfc /scannow" thing?Quote from: Sid on January 21, 2008, 04:03:56 PM

You're right, it's a windows software failure. Maybe you should try to repair windows or (worse) reinstall Windows. Be careful with back-up (REALLY REALLY important if it is not your computer).Quote from: Soviet Genius on January 21, 2008, 04:42:57 PM
Try that "sfc /scannow" thing?

Brings up a box:

Title: Windows File Protection
Body: Please wait while windows verifies that all protected Windows files are intact and in their original versions
-Progress bar-
Button - Cancel

Then up comes another one:

Same title,
Body "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache." ... "Insert your Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM now."
butons: Retry, More info, Cancel.

I haven't got his CD on me, or else I'd continue...all I've got here with me is an XP Pro cd...Ok, he dropped off his collection of CD's a little while ago, and I've run "sfc /scannow".

Here's the results:

WINNER!!!

It's repaired the issue!

WOOT!!2

Now just to sort out his router when I go up on Sunday...

Solve : WLAN stopped working?

Answer»

I have a Packard Bell laptop (2yo) with a WLAN that stopped working after a Windows Update and a reboot about 30 min ago. I'm currently using an Ethernet Cable. Neither the router nor my laptop has moved. I haven't installed ANYTHING new.

The connection indicator has a big red X over it. It can't find any networks nearby. The WLAN says it's connected but it also has a big red X over it and I can't repair it. When checking with ipconfig it says my Ethernet card is disconnected but when I check the managment console it says it's working.

I've had this problem before (happened exactly the same way too) but got it fixed later on when I had my mothercard changed/repaired. The WLAN-problem is mentioned in the papers but I have no idea what they did to fix it. It wasn't a big deal back then since I just SWITCHED to using a cable but now I'm wondering if it's something I can to do fix it myself. I've searched this Forum but didn't find anything to match my problem.

EDIT: The updates were: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806) and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (KB929300).
I'm using Intel(R)PRO/WIRELESS 2200BG Network Connection. You mentioned that the WLAN says it's connected but has a big red x over it? Is that in device manager, or in network connections? Check device manager to make sure it is enabled and working properly. The device manager says it's working, there's no red X there unless I manually turn it off.
The network connections says it's connected but not available (hence the red X). The repair doesn't work; it says it can't finish the repairs because it can't establish a connection.
It can't establish a connection because it can't find a close enough network to connect to. The network/router is in the other room but I can put the d-link right next to me and it won't be picked up.I just realized you mentioned it's an intel card. Check to see if you have an intel pro set wireless (or something like that... some type of software utility to run your wireless). I have seen intel and windows fight each other for control of the wireless device. That could be your issue.I've got it to work! Finally and THANK YOU!

Here's what I did:
Ok, I looked for that Intel Connection Software and found both it and a new driver for my card on its site.

After installation:
When I tried to activate the IC Software it said I needed to do it manually first. That meant hitting Fn+F1 (took a while to figure that out).

I also stopped and inactivated the Wireless Zero Configuration (because it's run by Windows) found in Control PANEL -> Admin tools -> Service (or whatever the correct English words are, I'm Swedish).

I activated the ICS again, which worked for about a second. I tried to repair the wireless connection, which worked. The Intel(R) PROSet then found the network and I got connected.

Happy, happy me. Good, I'm glad you were able to get it working. Those wlan cards can be tricky, especially if they have a keyboard shortcut to disable/enable them.

Solve : Do I have a faulty NIC?

Answer»

Hi all, I want to know if my NIC is faulty.
I cannot ping other computers (destination host unreachable) and I cannot OBTAIN an IP address from the server.
When I plug the RJ-45 in the green light comes on and the orange light KEEPS flashing.
Should I replace my NIC or is it another problem

Please help
A few things that I'd check first:

Device manager to see if there are any ?'s
try pinging yourself (127.0.0.1)

Also, are you SURE that WHATEVER network you're hooking into is working properly? Do you have other computers to test this on?Thanks for the reply.
I am so confused now, I checked device manager and there are no ?, I can ping myself but now one else! The n/w is working as I have 90 other computers to test it.

I am at a total LOSS. If you have 90 other computers on the network, do you have another nic card nearby you could try? Couldn't hurt to test that out.

Solve : How do I fix this 2WIRE HomePortal problem??

Answer»

I just performed a “SYSTEM recovery” on my HP Desktop pc. I’ve re-installed my ISP/DSL software and performed all necessary updates. Here is the problem. Two windows appear every time I boot my pc and log on as a “limited user.” The first window, which is labeled HomePortal Monitor, reads “Cannot Open Debug File.” The second window reads, “Failed to initialize NETWORK ACCESS. Please log off and log back on as administrator.” I called 2WIRE but I could never get an answer. I'm a novice when it comes to technical problems so any assistance would be much appreciated. Thank You.Try reinstalling whatever homeportal software you installed, and see if that does the trick.

ALSO, does the message appear only when on as a limited user, or on an ADMIN account as well?

Solve : Xbox LIVE through Laptop....?

Answer»

Hey GUYS,
First off how are you all?!
Second, I'm having some serious trouble connecting my XBOX to LIVE via my laptop. Ill just give a diagram as to what the setup is.
XBOX 360 >ETHERNET Cable< Laptop >Wireless< Internet
The problem is that when the Ethernet is plugged into my laptop the Local Area Connection just gives me the error message of 'Limited or No Connectivity'. I tried to follow the instructions given here:
http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055211456
But when I try to enable ICS it just gives me an error message that reads:
'An error occured when ICS was being enabled
Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled.
A LAN connection is already configured with the IP adress that is REQUIRED for automatic IP addressing'

I think I know what its trying to say, I just have no idea on how to fix it. I have updated my LAN drivers, tried bridging, but when i do that it wont let me use my wireless internet. It says connected at 1MBps but wont load any pages.

Please does anyone know how to fix this?!
My laptop is an Acer Aspire 3000
XP SP2
Broadcom WLAN Adaptor.
No firewall installed, I use the ONE in the router.

Thank you in advance
ChrisI will look forward these next days to try to solve your problem.
Please tell us how do you connect your laptop to the internet. I need also the content of the file c:\config.txt, which you obtain it as follows:
- open a command prompt window
- type the command: ipconfig (SPACE) /all (SPACE) >c:\config.txt (ENTER) (do that when you are connected to internet).
My assumption is that you receive an IP like 192.168.0.x from your ISP or from a router (do you have a router through which you connect to internet?).

Before I will advance with information search, I need what I asked you.Since this is an Xbox you may also want to try bridging instead.
Thanks for reply, here is the requested information:

(search with "connect xbox 360 through router")

These are just examples, first results from those searches on yahoo, google, altavista or other search engine.

You can't use ICS because by default ICS tries to use addresses like 192.168.0.x for the "lan" area part of your small network; but your "wan" area part of the laptop (the connection between the laptop and your router) uses this network address, and causes a conflict with your demand to use ICS. If you have a router why do you further complicate things instead of just using what your router has? (plenty I may say, for a home connection).

I may explain further why you can't use now ICS with these router settings. You may change the DHCP pool, but I won't deviate from the problem - it will only complicate things and it won't solve your problem, your solution lies in the router settings (port forwarding, virtual server).Sorted!!!
Thanks alot mate, appreciate it!!

Solve : Internet connection speed lower than ISP testing?

Answer»

Hi folks,

I've just upgraded my connection speed (dsl) through my ISP (Sasktel here in Saskatchewan, Canada). The download speed is supposed to be 5MBps and I am currently getting just over 1.

I've had their technicians in and they checked all of their connections. The technician USED his laptop and connected directly to my line- got about 4.8 MBps. Close to advertised speed. We checked mine again and got just over 1.Mbps.

I have a Dell Dimension 4200 running XP Home SP2. It is a 4.6 Gighrz with 2.5 Gigs RAM. I have a Sapphire HD Pro VIDEO card with 512 Mb onboard memory.

I am running Kaspersky anti-virus, Ad-Watch and Spybot. My ISP provides me with a firewall.

I just updated my Ethernet card to the latest DRIVERS AVAILABLE. The card is an Intel Pro/100 VE.

The device driver says there are no conflicts and that the card is working fine. I've run diagnostics through the card driver software and they seem to be working well also.

I'm running short on patience with this! It seems to be something in my computer limiting the acceess speeds but I can't pinpoint it. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Solve : Wi-Problem with Vista. (Limited Connectivity?)?

Answer»

My vista laptop has worked flawlessly with my home network (linksys WRT54G) for almost a year now.. But all of the sudden about two weeks ago I began to have huge problems..

I would be surfing the internet, then all of the sudden the page would time out. My internet status down in the right hand corner would go from (Local and Internet) pictured below:

Then once the page times out, it goes to (Limited Connectivity) pictured below:

Now, if i WAIT like a minute or so, the status will return to Local and Internet and work again.. But its really a pain in the arse. Like when I'm trying to download something, or I'm playing poker, this happens and I lose my download and poker! It really sucks..

And even though my internet is working right now, I still get this icon when I look at my network. Pictured Below.

I really really appreciate any advice that you guys can give me.. I really don't want to go out and buy a new router, cause this is my second WRT54G (I bricked the last one trying to UPDATE the firmware) and this router isn't more than a couple MONTHS old..

The couple things that I have tried that didnt help were:
1. disabling "auto tuning"
2. and disabling ipv6.

Thanks so much guys, i really appreciate any feedback.Have you tried turning the router on/off? Sometimes it needs a restart....or bypass the router?DHCP is sometimes flaky over wifi. Consider manually configuring the IP settings of your WIRELESS network card. I also recommend disabling any SuperG type mode and changing channels on the router. Also look for sources of interference (e.g. large objects between you and the router, microwaves, cordless home PHONES, etc.)

Solve : 2 questions actually...?

Answer»

I have a dell dimension 1100. it has an INTEL PRO/100 ADAPTER NDIS... Does this card have wireless capabilities? My uncle mentioned that most new COMPUTERS have built in wireless. Also, I got a Belkin wireless router but was not aware that the other computer requires a wireless g usb adapter... does anyone no where I can get one of these cheap... second hand is fine... im in canada by the way. Most newer laptops come with built in wireless capabilities. To my knowledge it is still far from standard equipment in a desktop.
The Intel card do not support wireless, it is a standard Ethernet NIC. If the computer had wireless capabilities it would be on a separate card or usb device. It appears the only wireless option available from Dell for the dimension 1100 was an USB adapter. You would probably have noticed if you had one sticking out of an USB port.

Regarding buying a wireless adapter. I would suggest you buy one from Belkin. It is always a GOOD idea to get one of the same brand as the router. It usually avoids incompatibility issues. Wireless USB devices should be pretty cheap (they are where I live at least) so I would get a new one. But I don't know the specific situation in Canada nor any good places to buy one.
But hang tight, hopefully someone else will.
According to the factory model with no mods. It does not have a wireless card, unless someone installed after purchase. It does hv the 10/100 LAN Card.

I agree that the Belkin wireless G @ 54mbs would work fine for you as long as your with in 300ft of your router (Max Dist & Highest Signal). I have the same PCI-e card in one of my desktops. Rarely any trouble. Be sure to remember to load the driver before installing the card. MAY have to reset router (unplug for 10seconds).

carefull when inside the case, remember to ground yourself on the frame before touching anything. Do this every time to discharge any ESD before touching any part of the inside of your computer.

-J300 FEETS? Hm... Are you sure about that length? I would say at most half of what you said: 40 meters or 120-150 feets, let's round. With the distance increase the wireless signal decrease and also the network speed is reduced.

[LE]
feets=feet My apologies for this.
[/LE]300 feet is the maximum theoretical length of a segment of Cat 5. Coincidence?

Solve : Laptop with Vista problem connecting to printer?

Answer»

I'm trying to connect my daughter's laptop (Vista) to our printer, which is physically attached to our desktop running XP. We have a wireless antenna connected to our desktop and have set the printer to share. Have set the firewall (on the desktop) to accept the new laptop computer but still we cannot print from the laptop.
I've actually successfully installed the printer onto the laptop following their instructions but, it does not print. Could the two different platforms be the problem?
Please help.
Thank you
Quote

I've actually successfully installed the printer onto the laptop following their instructions but, it does not print.
Do you mean you once had the printer connected directly to the laptop, or do you mean the printer appears in the laptop, i.e. Vista's, CONTROL Panel, under Printers? As a test, you might try connecting the printer directly to the laptop and see whether you can get it working that way.

How do have the two computers networked together? Do you have a ROUTER? Soybean,
The printer appears on the laptop (as you wrote, through vista setup) and it has never been connected to the printer. I'm begining to think it has something to do with how we have the network set up. I actually have a wireless router/antenna that connects via ethernet to our desktop. The laptop picks up the signal from the antenna to go onto the internet (our assigned network with password security from the wireless company). In other words, if I disconnected the wireless antenna from the desktop and just left it plugged into the WALL, the laptop could still pick up on the signal to get onto the internet. So, I'm not sure whether to call it a router? Perhaps there lies the problem?? Maybe I need some other device?

I'm not sure exactly what type of device you have there. Can get find a brand name and model number on it, or any identifying markings?

What type of Internet connection to you have? Cable, DSL, dialup? Are all computers, your and your daughters, in the same dwelling? Who setup the wireless connection for your desktop in the first place?Currently, I have two ways of getting internet: One through a cable modem (Comcast) and another is a wireless antenna (Wireless company using the Ruckus antenna). The cable modem and antenna are connected to the desktop computer; the wireless is connected to the ethernet on the desktop. The laptop is connecting to the internet via the wireless antenna. I signed up with the wireless service ( a local company here in town) because our cable sometimes goes out during winter storms and such. So, I didn't want to be left without a connection to the internet because I have two kids in school who use the internet quite frequently for school.
The wireless connection was just a simple plug and play unit. All I had to do was log on with our username and password given to us by the company - pretty simple.
Quote

So, you have two ethernet ports on your computer? In other words, you have both the modem and the antenna for the wireless service connected at the same time?Yes, I have both devices plugged into the desktop computer. But, cable modem is connected through a usb port and the wireless is connected through an ethernet at the same time. Currently, when we access the internet at the desktop, it must be connecting through the wireless because the LIGHTS on the modem don't all turn on (as it did before when we just connected through the cable modem). That's another question I wanted to ask but, I'll have to post it under Internet questions.
Just an update. I finally got the laptop to communicate with the printer (wireless connection). What I did was follow the "set up a network" on the laptop which includes a network log on and passkey PROVIDED by the wireless company we signed up for. Also, I hadn't realized that the laptop IP address had changed since setting up the network. So, I just added that address to the "allow" list on the firewall (on the main computer where the printer is connected to). Everything works now

Solve : Keep getting disconnected?

Answer»

Can you help me?

I have a home networking setup at home. I use a Netgear DG834G wireless router. Three PCs running Windows XP Pro and TWO laptops also running the same OS. All five had no problems connecting to the internet, all wirelessly. This was the set up for about 2 to 3 years.

One laptop was then replaced with Windows Vista Home PREMIUM and all was still well, with none having any problems getting online. A Sony Playstation 3 was also added, as my son loves his online playing. That was also no problem.

But then we added a another laptop which RUNS Windows Vista Business. This is where we started to have problems. Some PCs were not able to connect to the router or at times it would connect then suddenly say that it has limited connectivity.

So I then wired one PC that was nearest the router to reduce the amount of wireless stations trying to access the router, it didn't help too much.

We started to discover that the new laptop seemed to be having or even CAUSING the problems. If it was not on all PCs and laptops could connect and stay connected for hours on end but we found that if the new laptop was turned on problems occurred after 30mins and then no-one could connect, we found that we would have to unplug the router and turn in back on and that would fix the problem for a while or else the new laptop would not be able to connect at all.

In the end I would just turn off my laptop or turn off the wireless so that the new laptop could be used without and interference. It works fine if it is connected by wire but we want to be able to have a it portable so this is not really an option.

What do you think the problem is? We've tried bringing the laptop closer to the router but that still disconnects intermittently.

Please advise as we really need all PCs working without having to sacrifice not using the others just to allow for the new laptop to gain internet connection.

PC specs

The three PCs - built
One Sony Vaio laptop
One Advent laptop
One Dell laptop the new M1330 model ( this is the one that seems to cause the trouble )

In the first instance, I would say you should be entitled to some support from Dell for this new laptop. It might be WORTH having a word with them because they could have an array of fixes at their disposal (including alternative drivers for the wireless card).

Apart from that, my first guess would be that the network card is attempting to operate in some sort of "SuperG" mode - it would be worth turning off that option if you can find it.Thanks. I did some other research and came across another link.

http://www.vistax64.com/vista-networking-sharing/63424-vista-ultimate-loses-internet-connection.html

Apparently there are differences in the networking stack between XP and Vista that expose router bugs. I managed to fix the problem.

The above link is quite helpful is anybody else is in the same boat as I was.

ravendj,

Thanks for the link, but I've got to ask... What do you think resolved your issue? Was it an update of the router firmware?

Solve : Is there a way to use cable instead of 10/00?

Answer»

I am trying to add a computer to an existing home network. (XP Pro windows home network) There is an unused tv cable that goes into the room where I want to add the computer. It would be handy if there was some sort of adapter I could use to change the cabling from 10/100 into cable and then back into 10/100. Anyone know of a product that reliably does this?

Yes I know I can go wireless but I have had bad luck with wireless in my area due to RFI. (I think) SSo any ideas? This isn't a solution using the TV cable but take a look at Homeplug.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,85003-page,1/article.html (it's a slightly older article but it describes the system pretty well.)
With it you can get network speeds up to 200mbps depending on the equipment you buy (theoretically at least).
Why don't you TRY with simple plain ethernet UTP cable? It's cheap, no other equipment required to buy (if you already have the network cards), just respect length limitation (100 meters maximum cable length between switch and computer) and all should work just fine.

TV cable... You like TROUBLE, don't you? Once there was USED the BNC cable, and that could be replaced with tv cable (in certain circumstances). I haven't seen a network card with BNC connectors for 10 years... Yes, you could try to buy modems (MOdulator - DEModulator, transforms from some sort of signal in another signal), but I guarantee you that will cost more than BUYING a UTP cable.

that's why i cannot connect to the internet properly
what is the problem it was modem or lan card problem

i change new network patch chord but still problem is there
Maybe you should change your network cable (between your compute and modem) and see if the problem disappears. For the record, full duplex is a pretty bad idea UNLESS you're connecting to a particularly clever managed network switch. Packet collisions are far more common and this can (ironically) slow down your network.rob, I disagree. Full duplex in an ethernet connection means that 2 wires are used for transmission and 2 for receiving. No collisions involved, because send and receive signals are on different wires. There could be collisions because of SIMULTANEOUS transmissions to the same host (many computers send messages to a single computer) but otherwise you can't have collisions between send and receive signals in the modern ethernet networks. You have 100 Mbps to send and 100 Mbps to receive, in the same time - if we consider wired ethernet 100 Mbps networks.

Half duplex... You can not send and receive messages (bits, datagrams, packets, name the protocol or layer of the protocol that describes that transmission) in the same time, there could be collisions between send and receive signals in half duplex mode. It is the "legacy Ethernet" that suffers from that problem, when there were used coaxial cables - when was used the same wire for sending and receiving the signal.

Collisions between the same type of signal are solved at the switch, you won't receive more signals from many computers in the same time. It is used the technique named "multiplexing" for WEAVING signals from different computers to create the illusion of multiple communications in the same time. At the destination computer it is used the technique called "demultiplexing" to separate the messages.

Wireless networks can't assure those characteristics. Many computers are able to send to a single computer and the access point can't do much about, and because of that the speed in the wireless networks drastically reduces with the increase of the number of computers "attached" to that wireless network.

Solve : "You are connected to the access point, but the internet cannot be found.'?

Answer»

Ha. I'm sick of seeing this message.
Alright, here goes the long-winded explanation.

Computer make & model : Compaq Presario 1200T
Model # : 12XL4
OS : Windows 2000 Pro
RAM : 318MB
Network Card : WPC54G
Router : WRT54G

In the past I have been able to connect to any wireless internet problem-free. Upon MOVING into my new home I cannot connect. The internet IS encrypted, but I have input the information in dozens of times correctly and cannot seem to connect to the internet, although it is finding the access point with 90% signal strength. I have been through shoddy technical support a few times to no avail. I have run cmd and ipconfigged the heck out of it only getting the error message "No adapters bound to TCP/IP are enabled for DHCP"....whatever that means. I honestly can not get customer/tech support to tell me what that even means. Not being computer savvy enough to resolve this problem after 2 months has frustrated me terribly. One person suggested that I install XP and try to reinstall the WPC54G's drivers, however this computer operates VERY well with Windows 2000 on it and does not meet the minimum requirements to run heXP. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you all in advance for your replies.

-Elana-Hi Elana.

Have you tried the Microsoft advice? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886223
You may seek for more information on any search engine with the message you told us: No adapters bound to TCP/IP are enabled for DHCP (search engines: altavista, google, askme, yahoo etc).

I didn't see that type of error until now, I can't give you an advice based on experience regarding this particular problem. Their answer is pretty simple: uninstall the drivers, reinstall the drivers.

By the way: "If above TWO don’t work, it may be the hardware issue. Try another slot or another NIC."Quote from: youiscrazygurl on January 13, 2008, 04:57:09 PM

"No adapters bound to TCP/IP are enabled for DHCP"....whatever that means.

TCP/IP is a protocol for networking. It's to do with IP addresses and how things communicate.

IP addresses to computers are like phone numbers to houses. Each one NEEDS a different number. They're broken down into 4 sections, and look like this: 198.162.0.1

Now what DHCP is, is a way for the network to automatically configure all the computers that are connected to it, so they all have unique IP addresses.

So, with that said, it appears your Network Interface Card (NIC for SHORT) (or USB Dongle, or how ever you connect to the network) isn't configured to allow the DHCP to assign the computers address.

Now I've not really dealt with Win2000, but in XP it's controlled under Network Connections, in the Control Panel, and you right click the desired network and select properties. Then in the scroll down box you scroll to "TCP/IP" and click the Properties button...and the options are there to set it up for auto-config.

Like I said, I don't know too much about Win2000, but someone will do if you can wait.

In the mean time, try using another method, or a similar device to try and connect...I was t/s'ing at a friends house, and swapped the device over and it worked first time.

what permissions??
im am administrator i the only user in the computer i need to get all the access to my files why when i try to share some file exemple my documents and i go to my home network and i click to my computer name and then i click my documents i cant access that is the problem
whyYou use the administrator account? It has password? If you don't have a password for your administrator account you can't use it to access shares. You can't access a Windows XP computer through network using a user without password (on the computer with the shares).
