Solve : Can I share my printer by connecting to router??

Answer»

I have a Brother Multifunction Printer (MFC 7420) and would like to share it on my network. At the time, I have it hooked to my desktop and it WORKS well when printing from my laptop. But would like to print from my laptop without having to turn on my desktop computer. Can it be hardwired via an ethernet cable to the D-Link wireless router? What are my options besides having it wired to my destop computer?

LaloYou'll need the Brother software to do it. Does the printer come with an ethernet CONNECTOR?

You may be able to give a static IP address in the router to the printer then go to Printer and Faxes and do a manual install using that static IP.

Boy, it's been a long time...

Alan <>< You need to some how give your printer a static IP on your network. The most common WAY for this is for the printer to have a network card built in and than have your client machines print to the IP of the printer. If your printer doesn't have a network card you can use a print server. Something like this.....

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=206&SRCCODE=WEBGOONET&CMP=KNC-GOOGL

No, it does not have an ethernet connection, it's a parallel to USB connection. I GUESS the printer server would be the cheaper option since the optional network card for the printer is CLOSE to $200, more expensive than the printer itself. Thanks for the tips.

Solve : Problem Staying Connected to the Internet_Vista Ultimate x86?

Answer»

I am connected to my Virgin Cable modem through a Linksys WRT54G Router and do not usually suffer any probs yet the Virgin MEDIA live status thing reports no probs in my area, dont think i've changed any settings yet I have noticed my Event log contains "TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts." repeatedly, and around the time i lose connectivity. I have applied the TCP/IP patch since this started happening LAST night, as I noticed some people having success with it. Also ran Spybot S&D tests with no luck as well.

This is my first time of using this forum so plz, make me believe in the site .

:EDIT:
Sorry, its Vista Ultimate I am using and I have no other PC's on my network right now.. apart from a 3G MOBILE on MSN, using its own NET supply.. that couldn't be causing problems could it?Quote

I have applied the TCP/IP patch
What patch was it?Did you try to bypass router, resetting modem?

Solve : cannot get on internet?

Answer»

I'm stumped on a system and wondered if anyone here might have some advice.

It's a Toshiba Satellite Pentium 4 with XP. It has an internal wireless card and the switch is turned on. It gets internet in safe mode. My initial reaction was to get rid of Norton. Got rid of it and nothing. I went to the network services in computer management and set all to "automatic". I uninstalled any other apps/services I thought could block it in msconfig. I have a reliable virus diagnostic tool and it only found cookies.

I figured because it has a connection in safe mode I didn't need to check IP config.

Any thoughts?

Thanks. It smells like malware to me. One AV program isn't really enough to be sure.
I suggest you go through the steps LISTED here and let one of our malware experts LOOK over the logs.you were right. I ran a few more comprehensive tests and found some high risk backdoor threats. Some that connect using IRC server, etc. Thanks for your help.Don't mention it... I barely did anything.
So EVERYTHING is fixed then?

Solve : Internet connection problem?

Answer»

I'm using Windows XP SP2 with a Linksys router and my ISP is currently Primus (Canada only) if I've missed something I should include, post and I'll add ASAP.

Keeping it short, I was bored one day, FOOLED around with "Set up home or SMALL office network" (in Network Connections) and after being disappointed with nothing special, and returned the settings back to normal (least I thought I did) I've been EXPERIENCING internet problems on my desktop computer. Although the internet seems to work and web pages load fine, the connection window for Primus pops up every page, asking to connect. The weird THING is, this should be recognized by my router and instantly connected, without prompting the user. This did not happen before I fooled around with it and is not affecting my laptop, which is using wireless from the same router. Any tips? I think, your BEST bet is to call Primus, so they can check your settings.

Solve : Shared files between wireless and wired computers??

Answer»

I have a wireless cablemodem router that I have a desktop connected to through a cable and I have a laptop connected via wireless connection. I have no problems with the internet on either.

I am wondering can I do a file/printer share through the router? I would like to be able to print from both without having to switch the printer cable between them. I would also like to be able to access an external hard drive from my laptop that is currently connected to the desktop. Is there anyway to accomplish this with my current equipment or do I NEED something else?

Thanks for your help.Yes it would seem that you already have all you need. Ensure both machines are members of the same workgroup. Right-click on the items you wish to share across the network (folder or printer) and use the "share" option. Google "Windows file and printer sharing" for more...I like to add some additional notes from my experiences if I may:
-The printer should be connected to the hardwired Desktop only. Switching a printer between two machines is not favourable. From my TRYOUTS, it appears that (somehow) the printer itself will be setup for the one, that will (then) not fit on the other (even with having software installed on both). There my be issues such as different operating systems (XP, W2K). Having a dataswitch does not always help. The printer will be momentarily unplugged and causes the the system to hang. The same is true for unplugging the printer and PLUGGING it into another machine while the system is running. This will throw a message "hardware UNSAFELY unplugged" and the system will hang.
-make sure to "share" the printer under some "ShareName".
-There is NO need (at least on my "MicroSoft WindowsNetwork) to be one and the same Workgroup in order to access other workgroups shared files, drives and printers.
I hope this is of benefit.
Thanks for your help!! I got it working last night! I don't know what I was doing wrong before, it seemed QUIT easy last night. I appreciate your help.

Solve : Increasing Bandwidth?

Answer»

Hello everybody,

I would like to know if there is any way I can increase my bandwidth and speed.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition and connect with a BT Homehub USING a Belkin 802.11g Wi-Fi Network Adapter.

I use TVU player and this indicates that my current bandwidth is 300.

Any suggestion is welcome.....ta!What is stipulated in your contract with ISP? Minimum bandwidth length assured? Other USERS to the same ISP have the same problems?er...

BT state that I should get 8MB, but after doing various speed tests it's seems that I get about 1.5MB.

I was under the impression that I could increase the bandwidth in the registry???Download, and install TCP Optimizer: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
Open it, and put a checkmark in Optimal Settings. Click APPLY changes button.
Restart computer, and see if it helped. Thanks Broni, I have installed TCP Optimizer but when I restart my computer the checkmark is back in current settings and nothing seems to have changed???It's normal, because Optimal Settings upon clicking on that button, became Current Settings.
What speed tests did you run? Is this cable connection?
Try to BYPASS router (connect computer STRAIGHT to the modem), and after restarting, run some tests again.
Run some tests in Safe Mode, as well.

Solve : what hardware/software do i need to get wireless internet on desktop computer???

Answer»

this is my first time on this web site. I hope I'm posting this question in the right place and asking the right QUESTIONS. If not I apologize.
I have a Dell desktop- P4-2.53 processor (I think). I would like to have wireless internet and not worry about paying an internet BILL every month. What hardware and/or software do I need in order to have wireless internet on my desktop. ...you would need a modem (connected to the internet...) and a router (sends the internet signal from the modem) you would also need a receiver to be plugged into your computer and receive from the router..i use a belkin USB adapter....you should get instructions with the modem and router on how to set if up

hope this helpedQuote from: hker27 on January 14, 2008, 07:47:58 PM

I would like to have wireless internet and not worry about paying an internet bill every month. What hardware and/or software do I need in order to have wireless internet on my desktop.

Where do you live? Are there any ISP's that provide wireless connections to their network? Or do you mean what juicebox said, an equipment connected by cable to internet but at which you can connect wireless.

If you want internet access you will have to pay for it; in my country there are options to pay every month or you can BUY access for a limited period of time, when you wish to connect - but this is far more expensive if you will calculate the cost per hour and USUALLY is worse than when you have a monthly bill to pay.

Solve : loss of internet connection?

Answer»

My network is CONFIGURED to the many buildings with fiber ring .

Internet USERS use via switch or hub (corecess switch ).

Most users told that internet speed is so slow and browsing is so slow.Sometimes the page can not be displayed .

That is why Network or transmissions or Proxy or ISP

pls advice me

rose, if many users tell that they have similar problems than it is not a problem at your computer. I suppose it is a problem with the routers or ISP. Maybe the WAN bandwidth your ISP gave to your location is far underestimated considering the real demand. If you use a proxy, maybe it's wrongly set up. If your network (that comprise all the buildings) is serviced by a router with performances far under the acceptable level. I can't advice you; in fact I can: can you try services from another ISP? I mean just you, not all the network which you use now.

(I didn't UNDERSTAND what do you want to tell with: "That is why Network or transmissions or Proxy or ISP).

I don't exactly understand your position, what is the problem, all I said is what I presume it may be wrong. And there COULD be 1000 things wrong.Quote from: redrose on January 13, 2008, 01:36:31 AM

Conceivably any or all of the above. If internet if the main problem (as OPPOSED to file transfers on the local network), the problem may reside at your gateway or ISP.

Solve : how to use 2 asdl modems on single LAN??

Answer»

Hai,

in this same premise i have 2 broadband conn, with 10 users
Is it possible me to config 2 asdl MODEMS using single lan?

some users using VPN s/w.Yes, you may use a few modems for your lan. I won't EXPLAIN more, there is much to tell and I don't quite understand your DEMAND: do you want all users to be ABLE to use both modems in the same time? What exactly do you want? Solve : Site can't be accessed though the external ip?

Answer»

I got a computer, running a site. The computer connects to the router. The router have an external IP, and I port FORWARD the ports(80,8080,22) to my computer, and expect them to work with the external IP. I know my ISP blocked port 80, but the other 2 suppose to work.
But it doesn't.
other computer connect to mine using the internal IP, there is no problem.
I can use my computer ping the external ip, and I can access my router's configuration with the external ip.
but I can't use the external ip to access my computer even though I already did the port forwading.
Is this my router's problem or my computer's configuration? how to fix it?
I'm using linux. gOS based on Ubuntu.I suggest you let an external source scan the ports in order to detect whether the ports are being forwarded properly. Go to the site linked to below.
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
Press proceed to enter
Type in a port number in the text field and press Use specified custom probe.
If the probe reports your port as open it is forwarded correctly.
(In order for it to be open you need to have a program listening on the port and any firewall should be configured to allow the inbound traffic.)

Other computers from your LAN? I mean after the router?
What router do you have?
To me it seems to be a security setting on the router, it does not allow you to connect back to your local area network through your external network connection from your local area network - it's a firewall setting, it does not allow such type of connections and YOU REALLY DON'T WANT TO DISABLE IT. The rule says: don't allow as input on the external interface any messages that SAY they are coming from your internal interface because this is NOT well-intentioned communication.
Please give me more informations: how many LANs are behind your router? Where is the server located?

Why do you think ISP blocked your 80 port?I did a check... the ports are open
I know the ISP block 80 because I read stuff about verizon on blogs.
the firewall allows all traffic

There are 5 computers at home, all connect to the router by WIRELESS. Server is one of them.

so is it anything to do with the route? because there was something similar happened:the computer can connect to the router but not outside, so I add the default route to my router and then my computer can access the outside.
now my route are like this
DestinationGatewayGenmask192.168.1.0*255.255.255.0link-local*255.255.0.0defaultdslrouter0.0.0.0This is the routing table on which computer? On the web server? It should work (I assume link-local is in fact "localhost" or 127.0.0.1).

Then from outside of your network you should be able to connect to your web server using the IP given to you by ISP or more simple, using a dynamic DNS service - free or paid. See www.dyndns.org and see if your router has the option to be a client, an "intermediary". Maintain the port forwarding to your web server (I assume that your web server has a static IP in your LAN).

Your router has a firewall, and there the rule that we talk about is activated. I am not sure that you can disable the firewall on the router (and I don't recommend you to do that).

If you want to access your web server from ANOTHER computer of your LAN, use the private IP of the server and not the public IP (of the router).

Solve : Problems with shared Internet Connection?

Answer»

Hello. Recently I have ENCOUNTERED several problems on my network...

I have 2 PCs one with Windows XP Professional SP2 32 bits and one with Windows Vistra Ultimate 64 bits both legit.
I have 2 network cards on the XP PC and I use Internet connection sharing to get both PCs online. The connections WORK ok, but I have encountered these problems recently:

1. Computers can't see each other on network. Ping Works, firewall is disabled on both, they are on the same workgroup. What can be wrong?

2. I also have a web server. This morning I could access the server, now from both PCs I can't access the server at all... Ping doesn't go through, server is up and running well(accessed it from 2 other connections, 1 from same ISP and one from a net Cafe and also tried with web proxy). I don't think I did anything to block my access to the server. Any suggestions?

ThanksWhen you say the computers "can't see each other", what do you mean?

It's always worth resetting/rebooting your network switch. Cheaper ones can get themselves in a real pickle. (Expensive ones can too, but less OFTEN...)I can't access any of the computers on the network. When I click View Network Computers the list is blank, when I try to access by IP it says it can't find it.
Ping Works, Internet Works on both.
I tried reseting the network cards, I even deleted the connections and set them up again... still nothing Computer A - IP: a.a.a.a

Computer B - IP: b.b.b.b

To access B from A - on the A computer, at Start->Run you are writing:
\\a.a.a.a
yes? And it does not work?

I still think about those firewalls...

Where is the web server located? In the same LAN, outside your LAN?\\a.a.a.a doesn't work.

Firewalls are off.

So let me explain again....
Computer A (Windows XP)
Network Card 1: IP: Static IP from ISP(Internet Connection) - Shared Connection
Network Card 2: Local IP: 192.168.0.1
Workgroup: WORKGROUP

Computer B(Windows Vista) - IP automatically assigned;
Workgroup: WORKGROUP

Note: If I try to put Ip manually like 192.168.0.xxx , gateway 192.168.0.1, DNS: IP from ISP Internet doesn't work.

Ping from Computer A to Computer B works
Ping from Computer B to Computer A works

View Network Computers empty on both PCs.
//a.a.a.a doesn't work from either PC

Solve : Extremely slow downloads with my brand new PC?

Answer»

I am using comp #2 thats u see in my signiture. Ive dowmloaded 2 games so far 1 is silkroad online which took 6 hours to download, the 2nd is Perfect world which is taking 3 days. This new computer is super fast and it makes no sense why it should be taking 3 days. I am connected to a router and for some reason I think thats the problem. Its called Linksys BeFsr41 uf thats any help. I dont no anything about routers other then u plug it in and 2 comps can access the internet at the same time. I dont know what info to supply u with... and will answer any QUESTIONS u have in order to get to the root of my problem

Thank you in advanceHow fast is your internet connection?
And what kind of download rates are you getting?i called my isp and this is what he gave me: "185029 bps" that fluctuates up to 200000 bps. I am on dsl. Rate of download is from 10kb/s to 18.5kb/s. If i use a torrent like utorrent i get 2kb/sSo it's only in utorrent you're having problems?
If 185029 bps is correct you can't expect more than ca. 18-20 kB/s.
Start by trying TCP Optimizer.Quote from: Echo on January 15, 2008, 03:35:06 PM

Go here:

Run the speed tests a few times. If you choose one that is closer to you, you might see slightly faster speeds.
When you test, be sure that you are not uploading or downloading with any other program. Email and utorrent WOULD be good examples. Just exit them.

When it is done, you'll see both up and down speed in a little box.
But look down the page a bit.
It is printed in text, both in kbps and KB/sec . Copy and paste both those numbers here.

Example:

But - how do you know if the slow speed might be CAUSED by the uploader?
You need to eliminate that possibility. I suggest you work with a torrent that is known to provide a very fast download.

Either Open Office or Ubuntu linux are good for that. Both are huge files, and both will download at very, very good speeds. You don't have to download the whole file, of course. But you can use them to test, as you make adjustments.

You can find a place to download the torrents for either by simply googling
for them.

Try the attached torrent. ( I had to zip it to be allowed to attach it here)
I just downloaded it from: http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10

Here, within seconds of starting it, it ramped up to 86KB/s download speed, which is very near my limit. Verizon DSL here.
300 seeders vs. 160 leechers.

I think it is a good test.

Echo:
In addtion to posting your speed test results, try this same torrent. Expect to reach max speed quickly with this torrent. You shouldn't need to run it for more than a minute.
If you can't get close speeds with this torrent, I'm thinking that something needs adjusting.
Let's see if Broni agrees.

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Does your mother board have the built in firewall from Nvidia? If so you will have to setup ports for your torrent client to work with. Also the older versions of utorrent don't work with the firewall....EVEN if you set it to disable. You have to upgrade your client. Or uninstall the firewall. Do a google on how to do that.

Solve : Private Lan within LAN - LAN Game Issue?

Answer»

I have 2 computers and an Xbox
comp 1: Macbook, MacOSX
comp 2: PC, WinXP Pro SP2
router: computer running m0n0wall with a switch

I go to a university and live in a DORM hall. All of the rooms are on the same LAN, and each person gets one assigned and allowed IP. I therefore have a router so that all of my devices (computers, gaming systems, etc.) can access the net simultaneously. The setup is as such:

Everything works as it should as far as internet access, etc. However, problems arise when it comes to LAN gaming, a staple of dorm life Currently, I have to resort to picking whatever device we'll be gaming on (pc, xbox, whatever) and directly connecting that to the dorm LAN via the JACK in the wall, bypassing my router and leaving everything else without net access for as long as I'm gaming. This is very inconvenient. I've been trying to find a way to work around this and be able to game from behind the router. At this point, I can't see or join the games others make and they can't see or join the ones I make, while behind the router. If it's any difference, we usually try to PLAY Halo on xbox (system link), Age of Empires II, Risk II, and every now and then a CoD II.

I have tried port forwarding for the ones I can find PORTS for. Some, LIKE Risk II, only had LAN gaming and dont have any ports listed anywhere. From behind the router, I can both ping and traceroute other computers on the dorm LAN.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.5 seconds on Google: http://www.xmpchat.com/risk2/

It's pretty tricky just to rely on NAT for this stuff. You'll have to tinker with m0n0wall's firewall/port forwarding settings.

Solve : Speeds on Wireless?

Answer»

I have two computers hooked to my cable connection. The download speeds between the two are drastically different. One being very high (higher than it's ever been) and one being very LOW.

BEFORE going wireless I was getting about 500 Kb on my downloads. I have Comcast, which I believe is 6 Mbps/384 Kbps. Since making the change to wireless and putting 2 computers on my connection things have changed quite a bit. I tried downloading the same file with each computer and one downloads at 1.36 mb/sec and the other downloads at 170 kb a second. This is pretty CLOSE to what other downloads have been since the change on these computers. The computer with the LOWER numbers is older and wireless, which I figured is why it slowed down, but I'm not understanding why my other computer has gone up so much??

Does this sound normal?

First, to eliminate other variables, try going to one of the many bandwidth speedtest sites out there and running the test seperately on both machines. What results do you get?

Solve : Can't connect 4th computer to a wireless network?

Answer»

I've just got a new computer and wanted to link it and my old one together so I could transfer files. Since I didn't have the right kind of ethernet cable I decided I might as well get a USB wireless adapter to save wires trailing all over.

We already have a wireless NETWORK set up at home, with one PC and two laptops working fine (usually). But I can't seem to connect up my old PC with the new wireless adapter (I put the old wireless card in the new PC so I could get it up and running, then decided the easiest--hah--way to get files transferred was to get the old one on wireless too). The old PC, the one with the problem, is running WinXP SP1 (new PC is on SP2, I don't know what the laptops are but there's no problem connecting them).

While the adapter (Belkin F5D7050uk) appears to have been INSTALLED fine, and in fact the computer says it's getting an excellent signal and is connected to the network, it's actually being a total liar, because I can neither get online nor share files. The adaptor's LED light blinks on OCCASIONALLY, and according to the Belkin manual this means it's not configured right (and that's about the only helpful thing Belkin has to say).

I've spent many frustrating hours typing in network keys, which have been accepted, and manually configured the IP address to match the one on the connected computers (192.168.1.101), since it seemed to be inventing its own. Still nothing. The icon says it's connected, but it's still a dirty rotten liar. It'll ping the IP address, but not the default gateway (which I also had to manually type in, it's 192.168.1.1). The thing is that until I put this new adapter in, I had a fine and dandy connection on that machine. Right now I'm very loath to take out the wireless card working here, and put it back in the old one, in case I can't get either working again.

What am I doing wrong? Belkin, for their part, have been singularly unhelpful with support/troubleshooting. Is it the adaptor that's faulty, or my extremely rubbish computing skills?

Thanks (for reading to the end of this endless post),
K8Anything? Anyone? Is it really that hopeless? Why is the old PC not on SP2?
Or am I reading it wrong?
SP2 would be the first step. Are you still waiting for an answer or did you sort it out?
Quote

Are you still waiting for an answer or did you sort it out?
I'm assuming it's not fixed, otherwise they wouldn't've posted back to ask for help and if it was hopeless.Oh sorry, didn't see your posts there. And I agree with you, SP2 would be the first step, its always easier to configure wireless through Windows instead of using the manufacturers software.I dont think I understand exactly etaknosnhoj, you mentioned a gateway. So I'm assuming you are on broadband, using an wireless DSL router. Is the router set to use DHCP? Is your PC configured to connect to an access point, are you sure the WEP or whatever keys you used are correct? Have you tried connecting without the encryption, but then you'll have to turn that off on your router.I don't understand it all either! Yes, it's broadband, and yes it's a wireless router. I don't know what DCHP is. The PC is configured to an access point, and the WEP key has been typed and retyped about a hundred times (having recently connected a new laptop, we had the WEP key written down. The laptop works fine, BTW).

How do I get SP2 on the old PC? Remember I can't download anything for lack of connection.

Free download from Microsoft on another PC that is capable of burning it to a CD.Or just order a CD from the Mothership...you pay shipping.See also the networking FAQ (click below).Okay, here's the thing. With a different PCI card, I've managed to get it admitting thee's a connection, although it says there's no signal. So I'm trying to go through every single setting to make sure it MATCHES what's on my other computer. IP address, WEP key, the lot.

But...The Network Connection Properties dialog box is different on the PC with the problem. There's no 'wireless networks' tab for one thing. When I his 'configure' under the General tab, it brings up properties for the PCI device, but I can't check the settings because on the ADVANCED tab, it doesn't have the same things listed.

I looked into getting SP2. After about half an hour of MS 'checking' my brand new computer's setting, it came to the frankly genius conclusion that I can't download SP2 because I already have it on that machine. Ordering the disc costs me more...plus apparently it takes 4-6 weeks to ship it. 4-6 weeks? It's transatlantic, not interstellar.

Must I get SP2? Is there no other way to get this thing online? It worked perfectly well without it. Why isn't it working now?

<--Frustrated, annoyed, and despairing. What does ipconfig show for the ip address? It show 0.0.0.0 I've tried to change it manually to the same as the working computer (192.168.1.1) in the Network Connections box, but it doesn't make any difference.Did you read the networking FAQ yet?

Solve : Opening ports??

Answer»

I have a Westell Versalink 327w wireless modem/router. I've been trying to open a port for azureeus. I've disabled both firewalls, forwarded ports on my router, ran port SCANS. And azureus still SAYS I'm behind a firewall. The port scans SAY that I have TWO ports open (they aren't the ports I opened in my router). Azureus won't connect through them. I've opened both TCP and UDP. I disabled windows firewall through services. What should I do now?

Solve : Identify/Disect Wireless Network?

Answer»

I was WONDERING if there is an EASY way to see more information about the wireless networks around my home. I want to set up my own wireless network soon, but want to be on a separate CHANNEL. Is there in anyway to see more information about wireless networks other than SSID & IP ? I'm open to freeware D.L. if there is not a lot of 3rd party with it.Grab yourself >NetStumbler<. That's all you need; it's free and no unwelcome "bonus" software attached.Thank You! This is what I was looking for!

Can't wait to go and buy a wireless router now!.... Not sure if I should go with new "N" Network thoughI would definitely wait for the format to STANDARDISE and mature. Heck even B and G networks have incompatibility problems between hardware from differing manufacturers.

If SPEED is a priority, I would just lay cable.

Solve : USB 2.0 Netlink?

Answer»

I bought the above device to provide communications between my 233 mhz PII pc and my 2.8 ghz P4 Dell pc. Both are RUNNING WinXp with the Dell having USB 2.0 and the older pc having USB 1.0 capability. The manual (on CD) details a simple procedure for installing the device on both PCs. Essentially it was to run the install program and then insert the USB connector and the Netlink control program would see the device and connect it up.

It has not WORKED! While SEARCHING the web for Netlink devices I found a few that had readable manuals. One of them said that drivers for this device would not be needed since XP could provide them, that it would work with either USB 1.0 or 2.0 and that the device would APPEAR as a mountable drive with a drive letter. This has not happened!

Has anyone tried such a device?

Thanks
Could you give a model number? The cardboard it was ttached to just said USB 2.0 Netlink (made in china). On the CD were some manuals with no model number referenced. I did find a blue print type of schematic of the device which had in the document box in the lower right a "PL-2501" and dated 6/19/03.
Thanks for responding.
RobRoy

Where did you buy this from?I bought it on Ebay from a seller "ut-trading" who had 7733 transactions, a 98.1% positive feedback and has been a member since 8/16/05. He looked like a reliable seller. I send him an Ebay email but no response yet.

In one of the many folders on the SUPPLIED CD was an installation note referring to this device as an "Ali USB HostLink" controller. It cost $4 with an $11 shipping charge.
Can you try using it between your faster machine and, say, a friend's modern laptop? I think the slow machine is the weak link, and the claim that the cable works with USB 1.0 may be a little - uh - exaggerated...

Solve : Recently changed to Verizon DSL?

Answer»

From 2 cups and a length of string.

I'm running win 98se. I have a dedicated phoneline. Am currently using IE, and sometimes the Yahoo browzer. I frequently go to a surf site and when there's a page with a load of pics, my computor freezes up and have to simulate "power failure" to turn it off. I contacted he techs at Yahoo who immmediately say VIRUS. I run antivirus and I called back for another tech who asked what my computors performance was. was 78%. he said it had to be a min of 80. so I get 84 and still freezing. call back and the tech said Verizon DSL isn't COMPATABLE with 98. which is when I went off and had to hang up before making AB azz out of myself.

I read dilberts praises on thre different browzers and downdoaded the firefox. it isn't capatable with my crap cause it only loaded once.

Is there some secret place where I can poke some buttons and throw some f13's around that WOULD "strengthen" my POS internet connection?Quote

Fwiw - I use Win98SE. I have Verizon DSL. I have used some old version of IE, Netscape ( I forget the ver number now ) and SWITCHED to Firefox some time ago. Use only Firefox now. ver 1.5.0.9. Have not tried the newer 2.0 version.

Win98, Verizon DSL, and Firefox work together.

I do have occasional freeze ups. Only when I open a LOT of tabs, and only on a couple sites. This site, for example, does not do it.

Under "Performance" right now, system resources is 69% free.

Solve : Broadband connection?

Answer» HI, everyone
I`m new to this forum so I hope you`ll all be gentle with me!
My problem is that my broadband connection used to be very reliable, that is until my line was upgraded from 512 to 3mbps. Now I can sometimes use it all day without problems, or ( and normally if I`m in a hurry) the line is connected, the modem lights are normal, but I cant connect to any web sites or use my email.
The only solution is to reboot my computer, this makes everything normal again!
I`m using XP, PC is a good spec and about 2years old.
ISP is talktalk, land line not cable.
ThanksI forgot to mention that sometimes the connection drops wihout warning as well, although that is not part of the ORIGINAL problem. What broadband modem are you using? It might not be ADSL2 capable.Hi thanks for REPLYING. The modem is Thomson Speedtouch 330 supplied by my ISP.Okay; looks like that modem, whilst being a budget modem, should theoretically be up to the job. So first you NEED to contact the ADSL SUPPLIER (CPW) and get them to run some line tests. They'll probably give you some instructions for stuff to do at your end.

ADSL tests old copper connections pretty much to their limit and beyond. Could be you've got some old telephone cable in your area that needs replacing. Could be a couple of other things too.I had similar problem with one of my clients. There were initially set up for 6MB but the connection kept intermittently dropping. Called SBC support , they did a line check and said the distance was too far from their station. Dropped the connection speed to 3MB and the problem went away.

Alan <>< Problem solved!
I borrowed a modem and tried it - OK
Just need to buy a new one now...Great. Thanks for the update.

Solve : Dangers of default "passwords"?

Answer»

The Dangers of Default Passwords

Stroll through any neighborhood with an open laptop in hand and you will probably notice your machine automatically connecting to various wireless Internet routers that local residents have set up. If you are given a connection that allows you to surf the Web, chances are very good that you can also assume control over the same network that gave you the access.

In my experience, few people who OPERATE wide-open wireless networks -- those UNPROTECTED by even the simplest encryption technology -- ever bother to change the default user name and password needed to reconfigure the router. Perhaps consumers who operate open networks aren't terribly worried about their neighbors "sniffing" the ambient wireless airwaves for passwords and other sensitive data. But it may be that a person running a router under the default factory settings has more to fear from a malicious Web site than a local interloper.

Researchers at Symantec Corp. have devised a series of "proof-of-concept" exploits that show how an Internet user running any one of several name-brand, $50 - $100 routers under the default factory settings could be in a world of TROUBLE in a very short time, just by browsing to a malicious Web site. One of the easiest ways to commandeer a factory-set wireless router remotely is through the use of Javascript, a powerful Web PROGRAMMING language that makes it easy for Web sites to monkey with or otherwise manipulate a computer's settings.

For example, a nasty site could use Javascript to change the default settings on a router so that anytime the victim tries to visit a bank Web site he or she is silently redirected to a counterfeit site set up to steal online banking credentials (this is a type of phishing attack known as "pharming.") Or, the attackers could poke holes in the router's built-in firewall to allow certain types of traffic to slip through. [highlight](link- to FULL article) f..y..i.....[/highlight] 8-)

Good post honvetops.
Even near me there are a lot of unsecured networks I could easily connect to, should I wish to do so.
I think that the responsibility for securing networks lies not only with the use, but with the manufacturer of the equipment too.
Many manufacturers do not provide a simple way to enable security, and some do not even mention how to set it up but leave you to figure it out on your own.
And equally, many users are not aware of the dangers of unsecured networks, and should read up on it at least a LITTLE before purchasing anything of the sort. Thanks, Calum *

Solve : limited or no connectivity?

Answer»

I know I posted this a thime ago, but I actually still don't know how you could solve the problem 'limited or no connectivity' MESSAGE. I see that this question is often asked so it MIGHT be helpfull to solve it and make a sticky on the q&a forum. For beeing clear the following things aren't the problem:
*Bad connection
*Bad software/drivers (or any other software issues)
*Spyware/viruses
The problem I see alot that it works good for a long time, but suddenly it doesn't work for a few hours/days
I know this can be solved with rebooting your router and modem, but isn't there an easier WAY to solve thas or to make that it doesn't COME back?

[edit]Forgot to mention that hardware isn't the problem neither, and that the problem is cause with WIRELESS connection[/edit]If your problem is faulty hardware, you need to replace it. 9 times out of 10 though, this message goes away if youuse static IP addresses on your LAN. Forgot to mention, hardware isn't the problem neither. But what you say from that static IP adress is interesting, I don't know if I have it. What is it usefull for (to solve this problem) and how can I change it?

[edit]Forgot to mention this problem is with an WIRELESS connection[/edit]Have you read the networking FAQ yet, blackberry? It's all in there...I had this problem. What worked for me was to disable the internet from your pc. Then shut down. You then switch the router of from the mains. Then after about a minute put the router back on. Then you turn back on your pc and enable back the internet on your pc. I have no idea how it worked but it worked for other people to. After I did this I never needed to do it again.

Hope that helps.Quote

Most of what that did could probably be achieved with a command prompt and the lines:
"IPCONFIG /release"
"ipconfig /flushdns"
"ipconfig /renew"

All you did was force you router to reissue network IP addresses.

Solve : WIRELESS NETWORKING ISSUE....HELP?

Answer»

Hi All,
I have a wireless network set up at my house and have been using it for a while. There are 2 computers on it, mine and my roommates. The other day, i took my computer to the library and USED another wireless network there and just as i expected everything worked out on it it's own and the computer linked me up with the wireless network in the library.
Well, the problem arose when i got home and tried to link up the computer to the internet again. At first it would tell me that it can't configure the IP and some issue with locating the IP address.
I fooled around with it and got connected, but what happens now that instead of it being automatic connection it is manual. what i mean by that is that when i shut the computer off or PUT it in HIBERNATE mode it disconnects and i have to reconnect and re enter in the WEP password. it is 26 CHARACTERS long and it is a pain to enter. besides sometimes even when i have the internet on, it will disconnect me and the popup will say limited of no connectivity, even though the signal strength is 100% and excellent.
Please help. i have come close to throwing the computer out the window but i know it is not the computer, it is only a setup that i have to CHANGE. My roommate is on the same network and his is working perfectly with no issues what so ever.
any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Do you happen to know if you are using Windows' Wireless Zero Configuration, or whatever program is supplied by your wireless adapter manufacturer?Hi,
i am pretty sure i am using the Windows Wireless program to connect. Okay. The first thing to try is removing all known wireless networks. Find "Network connections" in your control panel. Right-click on the wireless adapter. Click the Wireless Networks tab. Remove all the preferred networks. Try connecting again.

Solve : Share folder from Win2K Server to XP Home?

Answer»

Hi, I'm trying to share a Win2K Server folder to XP Home. Can't even see the Win2K machine when I go to 'view workgroup computers.' Here are some more details.......

+Connection goes over router, but all firewalls turned off.

All properties in local area connections seem correct on both machines, like:
+Client for Microsoft Networks
+File and Print Sharing
+TCP/IP.

I've run the 'Set up a home or small OFFICE NETWORK' wizard in XP Home. Workgroup names match on both machines. Folder on Win2K Server is set for sharing with user name and permissions. User accounts are CREATED on both machines, but I'm doing everything from administrator login now.

Are these two systems (Win2K Server and XP Home) even compatible for file sharing?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.Hopefully this can help .

8-)fffreakThanks fffreak! That was a big help. I READ many online tutorials, but the one you linked actually held the solution. My settings were all correct, but I needed to enter the following at the run prompt:

\\ComputerName\ShareName

After that, the share appeared in Network NEIGHBORHOOD. Go figure. Thanks a bunch :-)Your welcome . Happy to help!

Solve : Need Help With A Mail Server Program-Setup?

Answer»

Hi! I would like to setup a simple mail server in order for the employees to use the companies domain or name like [emailprotected] We have a NETWORK with 20 PCs we haven't yet setup a server i dont no if that is necessary, because there isn't much of centralized work to be done. But now there is a need for email services. Any suggestion on the mail program that is easy to install, configure and if possible installation steps?
Discriptions
All computers are running Win XP SP2
40HDD, 512mb, SMC network cards some on board network card.
All connected to the switch. A 512 DSL running internet connection.
Antivirus: Panda, Norton, Zone Alarm, Avast and Avira.
We need something simple to install, Configure and use. By the way can it be used outside the corporate, i mean can employees access it in an internet cafe?
If possible please help with the Installation guide. Management does not want exchange and outlook. Thanks for the help. Sounds to me like there is a BUDGET issue here, and someone with experience really could do with talking to management, to appraise them of all the issues associated with email. Since email is becoming more and more BUSINESS critical, you cannot really afford to economise.

Many ISPs will make a webmail interface available with a control panel, so you can access your email via a web browser and the administrator of the domain can add and remove users. That's probably the simplest/cheapest option. Talk to whoever hosts your domain about that.

Other than that, "simple" and "mail server" are not often seen together in the same sentence. >hMailServer< is probably the closest you're going to get, but no decent email server is particularly easy to configure, unless you have a very good idea of what you're doing. It is a job for a professional really.

Written quotation available on request. lino124;

Here is a thought for you - and the hardware needs are modest - Proxy+. http://www.proxyplus.cz/

I have used it in the past as a proxy and mail server and it worked very WELL. A strong feature set and not a great amount of cost stands in its favour - obviously not as strong as say Exchange. Works for broadband and dial up siutaiotns so you get a little failover help if needed.

I wold recommend that you host your email solution as long as you can since it is such a pain in the *censored*. If you give me a little more INFORMATION on your situation at the office I might be able to give you more help.

Hope this is of some assistance

Solve : Networking WinXP & Win2K3?

Answer»

Hello all,

Have a Win2K3 server running DHCP/File Server.
Two new XP laptops have been bought by the business, installed all the latest updates and using Norton's 2006 Internet Security (N2K6IS).
We are having trouble in that other pc's/laptops in the domain can see the two new laptops but cannot connect to them. And the two new laptops aren't able to see the other pc's/laptops in the network.

My networking SKILLS are pretty poor and any help/suggestions/advise WOULD be dearly appreciated.I'm GOING to move this to the Networking section where Rob can find you. This is almost certainly going to be a FIREWALL problem. You can verify this by disabling the Norton firewalls. If you can connect, then we can move on to configuring the firewalls correctly. Thanks Rob.
We have included ONE firewall rule on both laptops.
To allow the IP range: 192.168.0.1 thru .0.11 (all pc's/laptops on the network).
Will try what you've suggested at my earliest opportunity and let you know how things progress.

I would like to put together a .bat file for a Americas Army Server that’s can be used for all users that have a dynamic ip,

So what I was trying to do was a bat that could ping your host name (dyndns) linked to you ip then it would CHECK this against the ip in the .ini file and update if different if different then REBOOT the bat file that RUNS the server I guess defiantly possible.

Any ideas anyone on how we could do this

Im using Windows XP SP2 and I just recently formatted and Im using the same setup as before so I cant figure out what Im doing wrong, but basically if I use my Wireless Software I can connect to the NETWORK, and it sends packets, but recieves none (so it doesnt work). But if I turn Windows Wireless Zero CONFIG on then it works FINE. The problem is Wireless Zero Config is awful for games.
My network uses WEP encryption which Ive entered, so Im quite stuck.

Any HELP would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.Goodness, how I hate wireless. Anyway you can hardwire. My daughter had major problems gaming with her wireless connection also - they all went away when we hardwired her room.Wireless isn't great for games at the best of times.
I'm no network guru, but I'll help as I am able.
What wireless software is this?
Are you SURE you have everything configured correctly?
Try disabling WEP and see if it makes a difference, you can always re-enable it.
Are the wireless devices on the same channel?

Solve : starting wireless internet network?

Answer»

we've finally decided that just one computer with an internet connection is not enough, but what exactly do we need to buy to have the second computer recieve the wireless internet signal?

what we currently have is an "Actiontec MI42WR" I know that it routes the internet because our laptop has no problem logging onto our network.

what do I need to buy for my other computer?

also- windows xp pro.Any wireless-enabled PC should do. But wireless networking can be a black art and not all wireless adapters will talk to all wireless ROUTERS. It's best to match manufacturers where possible - maybe you could buy an Actiontec USB wireless adapter; then you could use that with any modern PC.so would this be a good idea?:

http://shopping.netledger.com/s.nl/c.ACCT122499/it.A/id.108/.f?sc=2&category=4

the only thing is the price, $70!?!?

I found another adapter here:

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=179211

for almost half the price- $40

Is it one of those "get what you pay for" things?

It is, but Belkin stuff is generally up to the job.I decided on going with the less expensive belkin adapter.
in SHORT, its a little flaky establishing a connection, but once you get it, it seems that its there to stay, for at least an hour or two (only REASON I know that is because that's how long i've spent with norton internet security tech. support, arrrrgh, if only norton worked half as good as the adapter)You probably know that there are a lot of things that will influence the quality of your wireless connection - distance from the hub, thickness of walls in between, presence of cordless phones & microwaves, etc.yeh, my main problems are that the router and adapter are on opposite sides of the house and on different floor levels. not optimal conditions, but there aren't many electronic devices, such as wireless phones or microwaves near the area that they are in.

the point is, its working, and that's what matters. Glad to hear it. There are various other things you can do to improve your reception, so come BACK for some tips if you need them, or have a hunt on Google. Quote

You probably could use a signal booster. CHECK with your router manufacturer.

Solve : “Network Connections” popup plague?

Answer»

My XP laptop has recently been HIT by a plague of “Network Connections” dialogue boxes, which sometimes appear as frequently as once every few minutes. The message each time is the same: “You (or a program) have requested information from [website]. Which CONNECTION do you want to use?” The only option I am offered is my dial-up connection (not set as default), and my broadband connection is not recognised (this, incidentally, is not an always-on connection). The messages appear when I am offline.

Most of the time, the requests seem legitimate: the websites from which information is requested usually have to do with:
(i) ZoneAlarm firewall (website TARGETED is cm2.zonelabs.com)
(ii) Cyberhawk (services.novatix.com, update.novatix.com)
(iii) Avast antivirus (download75.avast.com)
Occasionally, though, there have been requests for information from sites I don’t recognise.

I have made two recent changes to my computer:
(i) INSTALLED latest version of ZoneAlarm (version 7)
(ii) Installed Cyberhawk
The computer ran fine for a few days after installing the new version of ZoneAlarm. Then I installed Cyberhawk and the plague began.

I’ve run full scans with Spybot, AdAware, and AVG anti-spyware, and got rid of all the junk that showed up, but the problem remains. Likewise, Avast has given me a clean bill of health.

It seems as though these requests are attempted updates by these programs, but I never got messages like this before.

I’d be very grateful if anyone can tell me what change I have inadvertently made to my system that has caused these messages to appear, and what I can do to stop them. They seem to have something to do with rasauto.exe, which appears in Task Manager whenever one of the messages pops up, and disappears as soon as I hit “Cancel”, but I’ve no IDEA what has awoken this program and made it so hyperactive.

Thanks. You may not have changed anything, but one of the programs might have. Go into your internet setting, under the connections tab, and make sure connect using lan is selected. Thanks for your reply. I think I may in fact be able to answer my own question:

Control Panel > Network Connections > Advanced > Dial-up Preferences > Autodial
Uncheck anything that is listed below “Enable autodial by location” and ensure that “Always ask me before autodialing” is checked.

Fingers crossed, this seems to have solved the problem.

In case anyone else lands on this page who is experiencing the same problem, I discovered this fix at the following thread, which also lists some other solutions, and demonstrates that this is a far from uncommon issue:

Solve : Router connection correct??

Answer»

Greetings everyone,
I've been trying to set up a network at home but can't seem to do it
I have 2 computers both running Windows XP (one is home addition and the other is Media edition). I've recently signed up with a new Wireless company which is beta testing (I'm one of the TESTERS, so my service is free for now). They provided me with a device that connects my main computer (office) to the service and have also provided me with a password so that it can act as a router for my other computer (son's room) to connect to the internet. I also have a cable modem (Comcast) physically connected to the office computer (main computer). I've connected the wirless device directly into an ethernet connection on the office computer. I bought a wireless card for the other computer (it connects into a USB port; looks like a flash drive). I have been able to connect to the internet on my son's computer using the wireless service but, can't seem to get the two computers to communicate with each other. Does the device (acting as router) have to be physically connected to the cable modem? I've run the networking wizard on both computers and made the printer and files available for sharing. I've also added the IP addresses of both computers on the firewall's accepted list on both computers and disabled Windows firewall.
I wanted to avoid plugging the router into the cable modem because if cable service goes out doesn't that mean I wouldn't have any connection to the internet? Or , would it STILL be possible to get wireless service?
ThanksI do not want to appear rude but if you have a problem as a beta tester you should be able to report the problem to the testing company as that is the whole object of testing.
to find out the problems,
to possibly advise on rectification of the problems,
to test for problems.

we are volunteering our TIME for free to help people who have problems
not support industrial commercial companies or businesses who are out to make money from freebeesToo late, Uesque's you are rude
My problem was resolved through another forum (Windows CONFIG problem).
If you don't know the ANSWER then don't post.

Solve : Connect/disconnect wireless internet in Windows ME?

Answer»

Hi. I’m LOOKING for an easy WAY to connect / disconnect from a wireless broadband internet CONNECTION on a Windows ME computer.

The available means I have of doing this seem to CAUSE problems. I recently installed a Belkin G Wireless Desktop Card on the computer. This puts a little antenna icon in the system tray which glows green when I’m connected to the router, red when I’m not. When I right-click on the icon, I get the option to ‘Disable / Enable RADIO’, but if I click ‘Disable’, it won’t pick up a signal when I manually re-enable it later.

Similarly, when I open the Belkin Wireless Utility screen, there are options to ‘Connect / Disconnect’ from my router, and to turn off automatic connection to the router’s signal on startup. However, if I turn off the automatic connection or click ‘Disconnect’, I sometimes can’t then manually connect later. I’m keen to be able to connect / disconnect at will because I’m always hearing that always on equals always vulnerable.

When I connect using dial-up, a little two-screen icon appears in the system tray. When I double-click on this, a Dial-up Connection Status box appears that tells me how long I’ve been connected and gives me the option to disconnect. Is there any way to configure a similar utility for a wireless connection in Windows ME?

Alternatively, is there any program out there (preferably freeware, preferably low-usage in terms of system resources) that will do a similar job?

All suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

Sonja, you need a small TUTORIAL on Windows network sharing and user rights. It is very-very simple...

Do you have to have a valid copy of windows? Anyway around it?

Not sure what this means...sfortune, what is the link between your problem and your last reply? Why do you talk about "valid copy of windows"?
By the way, it does not matter if it's cracked or genuine from this point VIEW. The cracked versions of Windows should work too. Do not assume from here that I advise you to use pirate versions of Windows. Use Windows genuine, do not use cracked Windows.

Solve : Random Wireless Slowdown?

Answer»

I have three computers on my wireless NETWORK. All three are running Windows XP SP2. I'm having some network speed problems on the two wireless ones. Described:

*Wired computer has no problems.

*The wireless computers are just as FAST as the wired computer most of the TIME but sometimes can slow to what seems like 56K speeds (or slower).

*Both wireless computers have a 'Good' to 'Very Good' connection to the network.

*I have tried two different wireless routers (Dlink & Belkin) with the same RESULTS.

*I have also run speed tests on the wireless computers during their slow time and even though it takes a long time to load the page with the test on it I actually get the right speeds from the test.

Sometimes I can do for a week or longer without any problems and then the slowdown will come back without me making any changes.

Anybody else had this problem or know I way to fix it? Also, if you need anymore details about the problem or computers just reply.Yes, a LOT more details would be required.Does anyone else THINK that this is Spyware/Virus related?!

ChrisSounds to me someone is piggybacking on your signal...

What type of security is setup on the wireless network ? ?

Solve : Unable to connect after SP2 install?

Answer»

I INSTALLED SERVICE Pack 2 and I am no longer able to connect to the internet. I have already reloaded drivers for my NIC card and have gone to the Command Prompt to TRY and renew the IP address. When I try to renew I get a message saying that it cannot read the IP address. I have entered the IP's manually from my ISP with no luck. Everything in Device Manager says I'm working properly but it isn't. This is also not a hardware or virus issue. What could be causing this problem? I am in a very time sensitive situation and need help ASAP. I have borrowed a laptop to hopefully find a solution so assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
BGWhat address do you get with you type 'ipconfig' at a command prompt / tried turning off the FIREWALL that is now enabled with SP2 / tried booting into Safe Mode and see what happens.

Solve : Router and Modem Problem?

Answer»

I've been trying to hook up my linksys router now for over an hour. When the cable modem is hooked up directly to the computer I have connection. Then when I hook the router up from the modem and then take another ehternet cable and hook up the origional PC, something is not working. My laptop and the PC do not pick up internet. On my laptop it says that i have full signal but it will not connect to the internet. Why is this problem happening?Have you set the networking properties so that the router is the DHCP server and gatway? How do you do that?GO into the properties of the Networking and Dial-up connections and double-click on the Internet PROTOCOL TCP/IP and make sure it is set to "Obtain an IP address automatically".

Alan <>< Do you have the router manual?
What type of router (what model of Linksys) do you have?
You have to set up the router accordingly. After that... Life will be beautiful again

Solve : Lost wireless connection on my desktop - help?

Answer»

Router: 2wire 1800HG Gateway, ATT/Yahoo DSL service. PC=HPs7620n, generic wireless card adapter. Laptop, Dell, Dell wireless card adapter.
Lost connection on my PC this afternoon, now NOT Connected. Called Tech support (ATT), went thorough the whole routine, no luck. He transferred me to another Tech who told me that the problem is it is not asking for key and that I need to clear out the preferred network list and try to reconnect again. He gave me Microsoft cust. srvc # but they are closed? My laptop is still connected and still working fine. I did change the name of my network this morning and was ABLE to reconnect both PC+laptop but lost my PC connection this afternoon. What is clearing out the preferred network list? Not asking for key (encrypted key)? Help??Found the problem, I disabled the SSID and my PC would not pick this up. It is supposed to only hide the name of the network but somehow if I enabled it, my PC would see it but no way of connecting to it. I am using WINDOWS XP media 2005. Guess I will continue to have to broadcast my network name for my neighbor to see.

MP
I always change the DEFAULT SSID to something peculiar. Also set up security (WEP or WPA) and limit the number of computers that can access the router.
