Solve : need help with usb modem?

Answer»

I recently purchased the usb720 broadband modem from verizon wireless. oddly enough, it connects to the internet and allows me to surf the internet fine, and isn't the least BIT slow. However, when I try to download certain programs to my laptop like AIM, or try to connect to online games like WoW, it says I do not have a internet connection. I called the Technical support at Verizon, but to put it bluntly they were completely useless and didn't understand what the problem was at all. Anyone out there who might know how to REMEDY this problem? Thanks. Are there any DLoad manager programs installed on this machine ? ?

no, and i haven't had any problems with viruses at all.Awfully strange...which BROWSER ? ?

Any firewall apps installed ? ?i believe it is ie 6, for some reason ie7 doesn't work. But I've tried setting exceptions and even turning off the firewall. What internet security software are you using (if any)?norton internet security came with the computerI have known NIS to cause this kind of problem in certain circumstances (particularly with websites that use javascript).

I would recommend ditching NIS in favour of AVG Antivirus, ZoneAlarm or Comodo personal firewall and Spybot Search and Destroy (all are FREE).indeed norton was the cause...thanks again for all your help.No problem. Thanks for reporting back.

Solve : Can't connect to Gmail.com/Gtalk?

Answer»

Whenever I try to connect to gmail.com I get the "The Page Cannot be displayed" error from IE or the "Unable to Connect" error from Firefox, but seeing as how I'm posting in this forum the internet appears to be working fine.

I looked through a web proxy, and I could see the site fine, but I couldn't log into my email probably because the proxy didn't support secure CONNECTIONS or something.

I'm wondering if a virus is blocking my access to the site or something.

XP Home or Pro? Service Pack? Firewall? Virus and Spyware protection being USED? Etc.?
Windows XP Home Edition
Service Pack 2
AVG Free Edition 7.1
AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
Norton Internet Security

EDIT 1: When I try to connect to my other emails; (HOTMAIL, yahoo) I get a little bit further to where I can type in my login credentials, but as soon as I type them in I get the same errors.

The URLs for email that my browser says it can't seem to connect to are

Hotmail - login.live.com
Yahoo - login.yahoo.com
Gmail - www.google.com (Even though I can go to google.com, just not gmail.com)I've noticed that a few more of my internet applications aren't connecting either.

Xfire
World of Warcraft

I've tried toggling my firewalls off to see if they were blocking the programs, but that doesn't appear to be causing the problem. It seems like most of my programs that require web authentication to login and stuff aren't working.I've fixed the problem on my own. I SAW in the process list a file hijackthis identified as Norton Internet Security, but Norton wasn't even running in the system tray. I started up the Norton Internet Security program and nothing was working.

It wouldn't uninstall normally so I got that Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

I got another firewall Comodo, and everything is working fine.Gmail is the best one on quality basis in compare to its competitors . Solve : Need help with bandwidth?

Answer»

I'm not REALLY sure if the subject was right, but this is the scenario.

I have a router and my bandwidth has been recently slow lately, and i first called service

provider to find out whats going on. They told me that somebody's usin p2p thats

bottlenecking my connection. I found out that the culprit was my adopted brother and i told

to stop it, but because he SPENDS 24/7 watching korean dramas and citcoms, he won't

stop, not only that, he's stupid enough to run two p2p programs, edonkey and limewire or even more, He's an idiot.

So is there a way to use my router to limit his connection only? so that the other

computers in the familiy can have a decent connection.

This is how serious it is, I ping google, and get 15-20s with his connection turned off.
With his connection turnned on i get like 800s

So is there a way that i can limit his connection? What router do you use? If it is a cheap one... I don't THINK you have any chance to limit his throughput. But you can SEARCH for QoS or prioritization in the router menu.Just block the P2P ports on your router. Problem solved.

Solve : installing new modem?

Answer»

Hi All
I've changed my internet supplier and purchased their modem speedtouch 330 (doing this is because they say I have to use their one if I need any tech support if any problems occur). But I still have my own speedtouch modem USB installed. My question is do I have to uninstall my one first before I install their one with the cd supplied. If so how do I do this,'cause Im not too sure :-?
Hope someone can advice

Thank you
CazzieIt should not be necessary to uninstall your USB modem, but I would definitely unplug it from the PC.Thanks for your reply
Got a bit of a dilemma now. :-?Last night I unplugged my modem and installed talktalks modem with their connect and go cd everything installed PROPERLY through the usb lead and two filters(which I've been using for two years with my other modem with no problems whatsovever). On line last night and today everything fine then all of a sudden my line kept on dropping(just like marsbar on another thread I have just read)message stating no dial tone?On contacting talktalk tech support I couldn't believe what he told me.Even though all installed properly he said it wasn't and to move my computer to my main BT box and install the modem again from there with the usb lead only. Is this information correct please advice :-/That's just a standard reply - he's reading from a script. Tey'll need to go through this process to determine where your connection problem lies. The first thing he's trying to check is the quality of your telephone cabling. Humour him and try and connect from your BT master socket- that's usually the one where the phone line comes into your house, and it will normally have an embossed BT logo.Hi
nearly a month later and i am still having problem with line dropping, sometimes cannot GET connected at all(especially in the evening)Done all that talktalk tech.support adviced...reinstalled modem by bt socket etc.Going down his list eventually put through to 2nd line team. They checked my phone line and said it was okay then he said (which i couldn't believe) it may be that a lot of people in my area are on the network at the same time therefore its too busy. Is this correct?

Thanks
CazzieA busy DSL circuit should not result in connection problems - merely slowness of service. If you're on a 50:1 contention ratio service, this means that up to 50 people may be using the same circuit. You should still be able to connect though, even though it might run a little slowly under HEAVY loading.

Sounds like second line support is little better than first... Ask them to do a clean line test on the telephone line. It's quite possible that some cabling needs replacing.Hi Again

Talktalk technical support has not helped at all their only response is that the modem isn't installed properly(which it is).I have not been able to access internet in the evening for the past five months.I have decided to go with Bt, eventually got my mack code from tt but tt said since I am canceling my contract early they are charging me a £70 cancelation fee. Also denying that I cannot access the internet at times i said.
So is it possible to take print out logs of modem/my internet access if so could you advice me on how to do this please So I can take them to carphone wearhouse. They are the ones that are breaching the contract as i hav not received the service they promised.

Hoping someone can help

CazzieI'm afraid you would not have suitable logs to show them. But they certainly would have the logs. I think you need to escalate this to Customer Services - if you get no satisfaction there, ask for a supervisor, and keep going until you find someone with a brain.

Your experiences are unfortunately rather common with TalkTalk/CPW.

Incidentally, I have been researching broadband suppliers myself recently, and the one that seems to come top of the service polls is Zen. They are not the cheapest internet supplier, but having been burnt by very poor customer service in the past, I think it is worth paying a little bit extra just to get a decent service. Thanks for your reply Rob.Been on the phone to tt most of the morning.Eventually got through to customer services they were no help, they put me through to tech support who put me back through to customer services blah!blah!blah!and there was no supervisor present.Surprise surprise on getting pushed from pillar to post getting no where.I've honestly had enough of them and rather pay the £70 just to get rid. My advice is beware out there and for god sake don't sign up for talktalk broadband. I'm gong back to BT.

Thanks again
CazzieI'm sorry to hear about your experiences Cazzie. Yet another reason not to touch TalkTalk for broadband (UK users beware).

If you still have the energy, it would be worth a formal complaint. In fact you could cause quite a nuisance for TalkTalk by reporting them to Ofcom (http://www.ofcom.org.uk/). For every complaint OPENED against an ISP, the ISP automatically has to pay a complaints handling fee of something like £325, regardless of the outcome of the complaint. So you could score a minor victory.Hi Rob
Success Last attempt phoned TT with threat of complaint to Ofcom. After speaking to various people eventually got a supervisor(after half hour on phone)long story short now have mac code they're not going to charge me disconnection fee and are sending me out a chegue for £40 for compensation for loss of broadband services.I'm transfering phone line/broadband back to BT on the 10th April.
I'm GLAD to see the back of talktalk.Again for all out there.../ Please Do Not sign up with these fools. Have a look at this web site http://www.oliverbrown.me.uk/2006/05/17/talktalk-problems/
I wished I know about this site before I went with them.

Thanks for your help and advice Rob I'm now a happy bunny

Cazzie
P.S
Forgot to mention I put a complaint to Ofcom
Great Cazzie, I'm glad you persevered. That's a much better result. Good work!

Solve : Verizon USB720 Modem - Use for FAX?

Answer»

Does anyone know how to use the new Verizon Wireless internet broadband modem (USB720) to send and receive FAXes? I have WIN XP PRO SR2 with the latest UPDATES and have installed windows proprietary fax software.

The modem has its own telephone number and I have been told by 2 Verizon Wireless sales people that it can work with FAX, but no one seems to know how.

Any help would be appreciated.

Badgenut :-/The sales people are completely ignorant. This is a digital (broadband) modem. Fax requires an analogue (telephone) modem.

Your broadband splitter separates your phone line into two "streams" - analogue for voice/fax (i.e. normal telephone use) and digital for broadband use. Your USB720 is plugged into the digital stream so there's no way it could send a fax in the conventional way. Your options are either 1. buy a normal analogue modem (which you can use simultaneously with the broadband modem) or 2. use (e.g.) an email-to-fax gateway. That's normally a paid service - see Google for more info.

If you WANT to send and receive a lot of faxes, you might think about buying a dedicated fax machine.

The moral of this story is never listen to sales people. Always come here first.

Solve : Any risk in opening port 445??

Answer»

In order to share file, my firewall suggested that I open port 445. Any risk?

MP
Instead of opening it, use a hardware firewall to trigger it when its being used so it'll close once it stops being used. I'm not sure what Raptor means (possibly referring to NAT?) but people beyond your LAN should never have access to this port. If you are on a trusted LAN, it is reasonably SAFE (and probably necessary) to expose this port, but you do not want it to be seen beyond your router. >Have a read<.This came up when my Desktop tried to access shared files on my Laptop over the wireless HOME network, Desktop was denied access. Checking the Activity Log on Mcafee firewall on my Laptop, it suggested that I open port 445. However, checking the list of ports that can only be opened manually, I also found the name of my Desktop COMPUTER on the list of all those ports. ShoulI put a check MARK on the name of the Desktop computer instead of opening port 445 and keep port 445 CLOSED? I believe by putting a check mark on the name of the computer, the Laptop firewall will allow my Desktop to access the shared files and keeps port 445 closed?

MP

No - that will cause all ports to be opened between the two computers. Take your pick.

Solve : Possword Protecting a Shared Folder on Workgroup?

Answer»

Hi! i have friend, he is using a workgroup with about 5 PCs, and about 8 users, he created a shared folder for some important files. The probelm is that he does not want the 8 users to have access to this folder over the network, he want to specify ony 3 users to use it, is there a way he can specify a password on this folder and give it to the 3 users and they can have access over it on the network?
Appreacite all help.Just set the permissions on the folder for the 3 people you want to use it. That will keep the others out. Make sure you remove "Everyone" and add the users you want.

Alan <>< Advice for a windows XP computer, with NTFS file system. Also, I suppose those computers are not in a Windows domain, they are in a workgroup, as you SAID. Pay attention, these are technical terms (windows domain and workgroup; if you have your computers in a BIGGER enterprise network you will better talk to your network administrator).
Create those users, with the same password, on the system where the share lies (this is a solution, there are more). Create share, give rights to those users to that share. There are sharing security settings and file security settings... You have to play with both.

Other solution, close to first (I have not played for long with such things, I do not KNOW if I am right... You tell me, ok?):
You don't create those users on the computer with the share. You will grant them the right to "Access this computer from the network" (Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy->User Rights ASSIGNMENTS), mentioning the usernames like: computername\username (username=user account; computername = the name of the computer on the network on which that user account is defined and not the computer which has the share). You will grant them access to share (right click on folder, "sharing and security") using the same method (mention the user as computername\username). Be carefull to: grant access for share, disable "guest" account on the computer with the share, do not give the local group "Everyone" access to that share (but do not forbidd the access of the group "Everyone" to that folder, just erase the group from the list when you are granting access rights.
Tell us which ONE you choose.

Solve : LAN Trouble/Problem?

Answer»

Here at work we have a small LAN going on and in a short time to more than 200 nodes with a LOT of users and traffic. We started out with only 20 nodes which was pretty darn GOOD. Now the LAN is completey slow. Can you tell me what i can do to solve this problem...... Why is it so slow, How can i fix this....... Please Help.. Very FrustratedYou need to give alotmore information to get some help. Like...
Is it a client/server or workgroup setup / what TYPE of router are you using, computer or something like a linksys / are there a lot of applications that are used over the network buy multiple users...you know, simple stuff like this :-/

Alan <><

At the 200 node stage you probably need to consider segmenting your LAN and installing some reasonably INTELLIGENT switches. Several questions need to be answered first:

  • how much is your company prepared to put into its network INFRASTRUCTURE
  • type of data being routed (if there's a lot of video on the net for instance, you may want to consider gigabit equipment)
  • level of networking competency available to you - you have got to the level where DIY may not be good enough, and it would be worthwhile splashing out on some network infrastructure consultancy (if you're in the north west of England, give me a call! Heh!)
But above all of this, most important is that you analyse and plan your network. Plan not just for current needs, but also for potential growth. Avoid cutting corners because you really will come to regret it. If you have to spend a month getting it all right on paper before you take a single step, it will be well worth it, IMHO.I'm so sorry for leaving out some information, this problem is driving me nuts....Teachers are complaing off the wall. Well i have a workgroup SET up with a linksys router. I have Symantec Antivirus System Center and use numerous programs actucually just basic MS Office 2003, MS Works 2000, Picasa, Intenet Explorer 7.0. Majority of the Machines are Pentium 4 running Windows XP Pro. Let me know what more u need?

Thanks for your help!Quote
Let me know what more u need?
10Mbps, 100Mbps and/or wireless? How many hubs/switches/etc?It would also be useful to know how the network is used, are there a lot of peer-to-peer connections, or is this a client/server network? Is all the traffic slow, or just specific traffic? This is a school
So, what kind of networking equipment do you use?
How many subnetworks do you have on this network? How many servers (I'm not meaning the hardware, I mean the software, the program that acts like a server), what kind of traffic?
Rob Pomeroy asked you exactly what you have to tell us, so we can be able to advice you.

Thanks, and sorry if this thread has already been made.
PeterThere are lots of places you can get them, you can get them at newegg.com, you can get them at frys, circuit city, best buy, and possibly your local electronics place. It actually depends on which one you get, that will determine the cost. It is a matter of opinion on which one you think you should get. It also depends on what type of router you have, do you have wireless A,B, or G? In my opinion I WOULD recommend you get one from Linksys.

Solve : Torrents from certain sites stopped working?

Answer» RECENTLY I've began having problems with Bitorrent. I'm using µTorrrent on WinXP. Torrents from TVTorrents.com seem to work.. but torrents from everywhere else do not. I'm not sure how to go about diagnosing the problem and so I'm seeking help. Are these legal torrents?
Any other problems?
Like, does your internet work OK otherwise?Quote

Like, does your internet work OK otherwise?
The last ep of PrisonBreak from TVTorrents worked fine and this is a few days into 'the problem time'. I have stuff from PirateBay (some legal some probably not) few fansubs of anime from whoknowswhere originally although I haven't tried a pack from GotWoot.com(which isusually my litmus).

My internet otherwise is pretty much webbrowersing and whenever I turn on µTorrent it slows down my useage of Firefox. This was true before when torrents were working and I accepted it. This is still happening even now when torrents go nowhere.

bleh I'm still HOPING this is some sort of temporary thing but it's been going on for much longer than normal.Quote

By "go nowhere" do you mean slow download?

If the download is slow, it shouldn't slow down Firefox loading pages. Conversely, if the bittorrent download is fast, it would make sense that web pages would load slower in Firefox.

How about your upload speed though? What is it?

Have you limited it? Perhaps on a per torrent basis? If so, try taking that limit off. What happens then?
Balancing the upload/download limits for maximum efficiency can be tricky.

Quote
bleh I'm still hoping this is some sort of temporary thing but it's been going on for much longer than normal.

Could be a lot of things.
How many others online at the same time as you have a 100% copy of the file? How many others are trying to download it?
If the ratio is way out of line, like 2 vs. 50 , it is likely that your download will be slower than usual.

Could be, on top of the above, that whoever has a full copy is on a slower internet CONNECTION. If that is true, there is nothing you can do.... just put up with it and wait.

You mentioned a litmus test. Here is mine. Two parts - try it and let us know the results - I'm sure somebody here will then have some more comments on your situation.

1.) Go to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Do the speed test a couple times. Try different servers.
I found that the one closest to me is noticeably faster.

Report back the results here.
Be sure to report it in both the formats that they give it
to you.
Example - copy-n-pasted:
Quote
Last Result:
Download Speed: 737 kbps (92.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 127 kbps (15.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

2.) Do a test download from a known good source:
(Even if you don't want whatever it is you download)

You don't need to complete the download either, just
enough to be sure of your max speed.

Go here:
http://torrent.ubuntu.com:6969/

Scroll down the column with the header name of
"complete".
Look for a higher number.
For example, right now I see:
ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso 698MiB 164 19

That's a 698 meg file with 164 people online with complete
copies! 19 presently downloading.
That's the kind of ratio that won't bog it down!

I just grabbed the torrent and tried it.
Using utorrent 1.6 here, not the newest version

WITHIN seconds, the download rate leapt to the highest I've
ever seen. You know that sometimes when you start a
download that it takes a while to come up to speed?
Not with this torrent!
It was a steady 80kB/second, sometimes bumping up
higher.
On my DSL connection, that is very good.

What kind of internet connection do you have?

Try that same file, or another with lots of people online
with complete copies.
Let us know what download speed you get.
You don't have to download the whole file - just let it run
long enough so that
you get a good idea of how fast it is downloading, and let
us know what that is.

I think it will be interesting to compare your results from speakeasy.net/speedtest with
the available known fast download.

I have little experience with other stuff via bittorrents. Played with a couple from places like you mentioned, and found it not unusual for speed to be in the 10 to 15kB range. Maybe that is what you are experiencing. That in combination with other things, and I lost interest in it.
It is however, an excellent way to obtain huge files, like linux distros. Resume works great.

When folks are downloading stuff legally via torrents, then I'll CONSIDER offering some advice.

Solve : PC not connecting to internet?

Answer»

Hello, new to the site and hope you all can help me.

Here is the rundown. For the past week, my wife has had trouble getting the computer to HOOK to the internet. I say she has the problem since it happens when I'm at work. When I get home, all is fine. I tried to get it to do it over the weekend and it worked fine. Tonight, she had the same problem and she figured that since it was still doning it, she'd just print out some pictures for our albums and when she went to "My Pictures", the "favorites box would show up on the left of the screen, without her doing anything, then disappear. It will keep doing this. What could be the problem?

Thanks for any suggestions.Could you get your wife to write down the steps that she goes through to connect to the internet and the error messages she sees (if any)? That would help a lot.

As for the other problem: the Favourites box will appear/disappear if she presses Ctrl-I. Perhapsshe is leaning on the keyboard at the time? Or clicking something without noticing? Thanks Rob. She doesn't do anything different than I do to get on. It hooks up AUTOMATICALLY at start up. Here is what I found when it finally did it to me today. I unplugged the modem and it seems to connect fine now. (we'll have to see later tonight if it solved the problem) When I was ABLE to get onto the internet the web page would bo screwy. It ould go to "FULL screen" (no header or buttons) to normal screen, then to condensed screen. All the time the Favorites box would pop up. (I was no-where near the keyboard, it was pushed in under the desk and I did check for a stuck button)I use a mico wireless mouse and while this was going on the light on the reciever for the mouse was blinking like crazy. I found a folder in one of my temps folders and it had just about every name of Virus scan, adware/spyware scan in it. (it was a text file) Deleated it, did a scan with the adware and got a few hits, also used Spybot SD and it also had a couple hits. Deleated whatever they found and it didn't act up again. Any suggestions on what else I should look for?

Thanks, I appreciate the help.Uh-oh. What antivirus protection do you use? Is it up to date?I use AVG and update everytime I turn on the computer. (pretty much daily) I also run the scan every other Sun. (full system) I had a virus on my old computer when I was running McAfee and that was how I knew to look in my temps folder for anything unusual. I haven't tried the virus scan after deleating that file I found. (ran out of time before coming to work) All my intuitions were telling me it probably was a virus. Any help?I suggest setting up the scheduler in AVG to run DAILY. Run it when no one is using the computer.

Also might try CCleaner:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Alan <>< ale52, thanks. I do have CCleaner. Not a bad program. Do have a question for ya about it. When you run the regristry cleaner, do you get rid of everything it finds? I did that once and my recording programs wouldn't work anymore.

My wife just called by the way and everything has been working for her fine. I may have got the problem solved by finding that file. Thanks guys for the help. CCleaner, if that's the registry cleaner you're referring to, is very configurable. Spend a little time with it and you'll see.

To be safe, back up your registry before running CCleaner.

Alan <>< Don't PLAY with a registry cleaner. If you are fond of your current Windows installation...
Use an antivirus (or 2), use an antispyware program (or 2), use a firewall (only 1 ).

Solve : Permission problems to access network resources?

Answer»

Hi buddy, I am experiencing a network access permission PROBLEM. Please help me!!!
I have TWO computers. One is Dell desktop, and the other one is Toshiba laptop. Both are working with windows XP, and both are connected with a 4-port D-Link ADSL router to get the access to the Internet. Each computer has a local printer installed- Dell with a laser color Epson printer, and Toshiba with a Canon bubble jet. I have run "setup home and small office network wizard" to configure the local network setup, for example, to enable file and printing sharing, and so on. At last, both computer can see each other in the Network Neighbour. However, the Toshiba can not access the resources on the Dell including the printer, but the Dell can visit all the resources on Toshiba happily. When Toshiba access Dell, an error message prompted up saying there is no permission to access the network resources.

I have tried to install the IPX/SPX NetBIOS protocol, and do the sharing, etc., but the permission problem still cannot be fixed. Are there any things I have OMITTED? If you have this experience or some ideas, can you share with me how to fix it. I would be much appreciated.Quote

I have tried to install the IPX/SPX ... protocol
Remove it immediately (unless you know for certain that you're in a NOVELL networking environment!), read the networking FAQ (link below) and then check back for further instructions. We will probably need to make some changes to your firewall settings. Thanks, Rob. I have checked the link you provided to me, but I still cannot find a topic related to my access permision problem. Can you just give me a direct link straitforward?
As for the firewall, I do not have a specific firewall application installed, so I just use the firewall function embedded in XP. I have also tried to configure the firewall settings, but it seemed still not working. In your opinion, what should be noticed when setting the firewall. Thanks a lot!!!The FAQ was background reading. As for the XP firewall, you need to allow TCP traffic on the ports I specified above. In addition to Rob's excellent advice, you might try disabling the XP firewall on both machines to see if the firewall is indeed the problem. If all goes well, then turn the firewalls back on one at a time to see which may be causing the problem.

Alan <>< You also may check if you use a common user account on both computers. If not (and I suspect that those 2 computers are not part of a Windows domain), than you have to give rights to user "guest" (wrong IDEA; but you can do it) or to create a common user with which you will work on both computers (or work on one computer and give the needed rights on the other computer). That account should have exactly the same name and the same password on both computers.
Can you see the shares from the 2 computers using network? I mean, if you have compA and compB, can you see the shared folders from compA when you are working on compB?

Solve : hello guys, i have a question. my wireless interne?

Answer»

hello guys, i have a question. my wireless internet has been working PERFECTLY until yesterday!!! i have a hp laptop with windows xp on it and i use a wireless-g 2.4 ghz LINKSYS broadband router. with comcast internet.

now today when i turn on my laptop not only does it take a LONG time to load up ( i turn it up and my picture i use as my desktop backround just shows with no icons on or anything for a good 5 mins)

Now when i look at my wireless internet icon on the bottom it says.. speed 54.0 mbps and says the connection is very good. but then it says acquiring network address.

it then says bytes sent- 0
and recieved - 923

when i go to view wireless networks it says..
"Windows cannot configure this wireless connection. if you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection use that software. if you want windows to configure this wireless connection start the wireless zero configuation (WZC) service. for information about starting the WZC service, see article 871122 in the microsoft knowledge base on the microsoft.com website.

i look in my control panel then ADD new or delete files and i dont see any thing to do with wireless

I thought it was the drivers but it says all my drivers are up to date and it says it it is working well.

can someone please tell me what to do ... all this happened once my boyfriend started windows and while it started up and was loading programs he pressed the button on top to turn it on and off and it didnt just go off it said logging off.. then shut it down and ever since he did that his internet has been doing this

we have a old dell windows 2000 laptop that is working perfectly using wireless but they go direcly its not like xp at all. but im TRYING to fix my work laptop i need it for work asap

thank you

plz ne help out there?be pateint not everyone is on all day like me lol

try unplugging hte power from both the modem and the router

wait 30 secs

plug modem back in let it boot up all the way
then plug the router back in restart your computer and then try it

unlovedwarriordidnt work still says acuirieng network address and then i go to support tab it says invalid ip address and ip address 00.00.00.00 something like that and same thing for subnet mask

it reicing bytes but not sending them outI think you may have a bigger problem here than just your wireless network malfunctioning. Have you rebooted since, and does it take as long to boot?yeah iv rebooted alot

and it takes a little time to boot but it eventually boots up

the weird part is all this just started happening 2 days ago when my bf pushed the on/off button a couple of TIMES while everything was loading.but when he did it it said logging off and then shut down so not like it turned off wrong wayOkay, well lets start by going back to a restore point, before all this happened. Go to Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Restore. Choose "Restore my computer to an earlier time". Choose the date just before this happened then follow the instructions.

Don't worry - you won't lose any data during this process. Report back on your progress?it says stystem can not be restored because no changes have been made.

kinda weird hmmWere none of the dates on the little calendar in bold?Quote

Did he by any chance press a little button that looks like a radar sending out WAVES as well....?

If so, he turned off the W-LAN NIC and you'll have to enable it again by pressing the same button. Look up your user documentation on laptop button and keyboard layout to see what I mean.

Solve : Wireless, unable to connect when SSID is disabled??

Answer»

2wire 1800HG Gateway, generic wireless network card. Windows XP media 2002. No problem connecting when SSID is enabled but can't connect when SSID is disabled. Can somebody shed some light please.

My laptop has not problem connecting even when SSID is disabled, running Windows ME ( three years old).
I suspect hardware incompatibility. Are you using Windows' Wireless Zero Configuration? Thanks for your reply, since then I have done some research and found that Windows XP SP2 uses SSID to connect, disabled the SSID will RESULT in no connections. No way around it.

My laptop with Windows ME (three years old) does not have this problem. On Microsoft website there was a BUNCH on discussion on this issue.

MP
Disabling SSID BROADCASTS is a very weak security measure in any case, so it's probably not a big loss. If you use WPA/WPA2 with a long and random key (20 characters or more), you're quite well protected. SSID hiding, MAC filtering, disabling DHCP, etc., only make it harder for you to use your network, they pose no significant obstacle to a hacker.I wouldn't completely agree with that. MAC filtering for example, although not impervious to ARP poisoning attacks will to some extent put off all but the most patient of crackers. War drivers will tend to GO for the easier targets first...Quote

My point is that if you use WPA/WPA2, the rest is redundant and unnecessary. I have dealt with a number of folks that had MAC filtering on, then forgot it and wondered why they couldn't connect their new machine. You have to remember, if the hacker lives next door, he could be patient. All he really has to do is wait for you to be disconnected, since the MAC is transmitted in the clear.
When it comes to security, belt-and-braces is the best approach. But that's just my opinion.

And surely PART of the joy of being in I.T. is that you get to chide users when they lock themselves out! Thanks for the responses. Now I have another prolem. Trying to setup a network printer. I plugged my HP All In One 2600 to my router and went through the setup wizard but my computer can't find it. I turned off the firewall on my Norton Security as well as Windows firewall but my computer still can't see the printer?

MP
Have you configured the printer to use the same subnet as the rest of your LAN? You may need to connect it directly to a PC to do this, or possibly you can do it through the control panel on the printer.

Solve : Huge wireless connection problem... Please help!?

Answer»

I need dire help. Here's my situation:

-I have a desktop downstairs, with a Linksys WRT54G router and a Cable modem.
-I have a laptop upstairs, (supposed to be) wirelessly connected to the router.

Since the other day, my laptop won't stay wirelessly connected for more than a few minutes at a time. During the short time I am connected, on the "available WIRELESS networks" screen, it says I'm "not connected!" WHY IS THIS?!

This happened a few months ago, I fixed then it by setting up the "Secure Easy Setup" thing on the router. I tried that this time, but it doesn't work! What do I do? I can't figure it out! Please help as soon as possible! This is gonna make me go crazy! Thank you in advance! What happens when you move the laptop closer to the router / try TEMPORARILY disabling your security (WEP or WPA) and see if that helps.

Alan <>< I tried... I GET an "excellent" SIGNAL but it still constantly goes out. Also, I have my security disabled and it's still doing the same thing. "Since the other day, my laptop won't stay wirelessly connected for more than a few minutes at a time." What has happened "Since the other day..."?

Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / SERVICE packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?
Bluetooth devices? Microwave owen? Other wireless appliances that appeared in your house or nearby?
It could be an interference...You may also suspect faulting/incompatible hardware.

Solve : high speed?

Answer»

do i have to get a different dsl MODEM (300g dlink) for higher speed ?
or is it the gigabyte network card ?

download speed now is 1.5mps ,but will SWITCH to up to 3mps in the summer or maybe the up to 6mps .

which is it ?Certain early ADSL modems can't cope with later ADSL technologies (ADSL 2, ADSL MAX). See if your current modem still works after the UPGRADE; chances are that it will.

Solve : adding wireless router to normal router?

Answer»

I have a home network using a normal router,,I have recently purchased a laptop and WANT to use it wireless(it has such capabilities)..is it possible for me to attach a wireless router to my present router AS I DO NOT WISH TO ALTER MY PRESENT SETUP - it works fine.thanks for any help....
cheersYes, you can do it. The level of difficulty depends on the abilities of the wireless router. Actually all you really need is a basic wireless access point ("WAP"). That would be simplest to configure, I think.Connecting TWO SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP SERVER in the primary router. For INSTANCE DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

Solve : connetcing a 98 computer to a network?

Answer» HI. i would like to no how to connect my windows 98 computer to a network.
all i seem to get at the moment id dial up and cannot get it to change FROMM those settings. i no longer posses the 98 disk as it was damaged in a fire. umm the network connects STRAIGHT to the internet and has wireless capability. but my 98 doesn't so is connected through wire.If i understand correctly your router is wireless capable correct ? ?
In order to connect wirelessly with your machine you need a wireless NIC card. Does the Win98 machine have one ? ?try going to the start menu and running "inetwiz" and click ok
select the LAN setting and "Next"
the automatic detect settings and "Next"
And "No" when the mail option is there.

Reopen IE and it should work.It would help if you'd be more specific. Things like your make/model of wireless adapter on the W98 machine, and what are the symptoms of the problem.

Solve : Links do not work ........?

Answer»

have access to the internet... I can get on search, type in pages, and use my favorites. My problem is... I can't click on ANY links for either IE or Firefox... just takes me to a "Unable to connect" page..... every time.. I have to manually type in the web page.. or copy and paste it. I have TRIED using default settings, changing settings.. uninstalling and re-installing....

I'm using Windows XP, all versions of XP, IE and Firefox are current.

I share internet with my dad we use DSL... NOTHING has changed, no settings have been messed with. Both computers have been scanned for virus' and spyware and nada.

Short of reformatting I'm stuck ...

:-?Try this, Go to Start, Run and type in "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without the quotes). Click OK when done and if a message pops up that says "DllRegisterServer in urlmom.dll succeeded," the problem should be fixed. If that still doesn't WORK, try TYPING in the following commands in the Run box:
- Shdocvw.dll
- Msjava.dll
- Actxprxy.dll
- Oleaut32.dll
- Mshtml.dll
- Browseui.dll
- Shell32.dll
One of these options should SOLVE the link problem you are experiencing and you can enjoy link freedom once again!

Solve : Internet Connection Failure.?

Answer» HI there, I am having difficulties with my other computer connecting to the internet, the odd thing is my connection to my router is fine;furthermore, I can connect to skype, iTunes Store, and most other Internet required applications

I have a Wireless router: Netgear RangeMax
BROWSER:Mozilla
Operating system : Windows XP
Firewall: ZoneAlarm, The Windows Firewall seems to display its turned on even. Though I go through services.msc and shut it off so that is odd.
What I have TRIED:
  • I've tried virus SCANNING found a bunch of trojans, Virus's and stuff removed them.
  • I've tried using diffrent ports www.google.com:8080
  • used adaware and spybot search and destroy.
Please Help!!! NEED INTERNET!
Oh dear. Sounds like something has been fried by the trojan INFESTATION. You can no longer trust this machine; I would strongly recommend flattening and rebuilding (i.e. reformat/reinstall). Make the installation of a reputable virus checker your first priority once you have reinstalled.
