Name the alga which is used for obtaining agar. What are the different uses of agar ? |
Answer» Agar is obtained from the red alga Gelidium. It is a kind of polysaccharide which is widely used as stabiliser of thickener in the preparation of jellies, puddings, creams, bakery goods, etc. It is also used as a temporary preservative for meat and fish in warm regions. Agar is used to make gelatin capsules, as a substance for making dental impressions and as a base for cosmetics. Agar is also used in culture laboratories in the preparation of solid culture media on which bacteria, fungi, and other organisms are grown.

Give the diverse forms of thalli in green algae. |
Answer» The green algae (chlorophyta) show diverse forms of thalli ranging from unicellular to colonial to filamentous forms. The unicellular form is represented by the flagellated (motile) genera chlamydomonas and non motile genera chlorella. The cells of the colonial form - Volvox are bound together by protoplasmic connections. Filamentous unbranched form is represented by Oedogonium whereas branched filamentous forms are Cladophora, Pithophora and Fritschiella. The marine alga-Ulva, commonly called edible sea lettuce, is pseudoparenchymatous and leaf-like.

Write short notes on (a) Numerical taxonomy (b) Chemataxonomy. |
Answer» (a) Numerical taxonomy. Heywood (1967) defined numerical taxanomy as "the numerical similarities between group of organisms and the ordering of these groups into higher ranking taxa on the basis of these similarities. "It employes collection of data, analysis and meaningful synthesis. Characters of organisms are given equal weight and the relationship of the organisms are numerically determined, usually with the aid of a computer. (b) Chemotaxonomy. The approach of taxanomy in which specific chemicals (micro- and macro-molecules) of organisms are used in classification or as evidences in solving taxonomic probems is called chemotaxonomy. The chemical iformation can be obtained from any part of the plant or animal. The sequencing in DNA and chemical nature of proteins have been utilized to establish similarities and relationships. |

Write short notes on : (1) Numerical taxonomy (2) cladistic taxonomy. |
Answer» (1) Nemerical taxonomy. "The numerical evaluation of similarities between groups of organisms and the ordering of these groups into higher ranking taxa on the basis of these similarities, is called numerical taxonomy. It is based on all the observable characters of the organism and to assign them specific number and codes for the computer as plus (+) and minus `(-)` or (-data not available). (2) cladistic taxonomy. Method of classification of organisms beased exclusively on evolutionary relationship is called cladistic taxonomy. |

Select the incorrect statements with respect to given type of life cycle.A. Maiosis occurs at the time of spore formation in sporophytic plant.B. Gametophytic plant is produced by germination of spores.C. This life cycle is exhibited by most algae and some seeds bearing plants.D. This life cycle is exhibited by many bryophytes and pteridophytes. |
Answer» Correct Answer - C Given type of life cycle is haplo-diplontic or diplohaplontic life cycle in which haploid gametophytic phase and diploid sporophytic phase alternate with each other. The gametophytic plant (n) produces gametes (n), which fuse to give rise to diploid zygote (2n). zygote grows to form sporophytic plant body (2n). moiosis occurs in the sporophyte at the time of formation of spores and the spores germinate to produce gametophytic plants. bryophytes and pteridophytes exhibit this life cycl patters. algae exhibit haplontic life cycle pattern and gymnosperms and angiosperms follow diplontic life cycle pattern. |

Identify the given structures and select the correction options, A. `{:(L,M,N),("Aplanospore of Ulothrix","Prothallus (2n) of pteridophyte","Ovule of angiosperm"):}`B. `{:(L,M,N),("Palmella stage of Ulothrix","Prothallus (n) of pteridophyte","Ovule of gymnosperm"):}`C. `{:(L,M,N),("Akinetes of Chlamydomonas","Sporophyte (2n) of bryophyte","Endosperm off gymnosperm"):}`D. `{:(L,M,N),("Palmella stage ofchlamydomonas","Prothallus (n)_ of pteridopyte","Ovule of hymnospermsperm"):}` |
Answer» Correct Answer - D Figure L shows palmella stage in Chlamydomonas. In chlamydomonas, under unfavourable conditions during zoospore formation, the dughter protoplast are not liberated and the parent cell wall gets gelatinised. As a result these protplasts get embedded in the mucilage thus formed. this stage is known as palmella stage. iot helps the zoospore to survive during unfavourable conditions. when the favourable conditon return, the mucilage dissolves and the daugher protoplasts form zoospores. figure M is of gametophytic photocynthetic, independent, formed by germination of spores and bears antheridia and archegonia. figure N represents L.S. of gymnospermic ovule. it shown haploid female gametophyte (or endosperm), bearing archegonia, microphyle, integument, etc. |
