आपको मनोज कुमार की फ़िल्म 'पूरब और पश्चिम' तो याद होगी! फ़िल्म का वो गाना...है प्रीत जहां की रीत सदा...बेहद मशहूर हुआ था. फ़िल्म की कहानी पूरब की सभ्यता और पश्चिम की सभ्यता का फ़र्क़ बताने वाली थी. पूरब और पश्चिम में बोली-भाषा, खान-पान, रहन-सहन से लेकर सोच और बर्ताव तक में ज़मीन-आसमान का फ़र्क है. मनोज कुमार ने अपनी फ़िल्म में पश्चिमी समाज-सभ्यता और भारतीय जीवन दर्शन के बीच के इसी फ़ासले को पेश किया था. मगर पूरब और पश्चिम की सभ्यताओं में फ़र्क़ है, ये तो सबको पता है. हम जीवन दर्शन में आगे हैं. वो, साइंस में आगे हैं. हमारा ज़ोर आध्यात्म पर है. पश्चिमी देशों में दुनियावी सुख पर ज़ोर दिया जाता है. हमारे समाज में सब-कुछ सार्वजनिक है. साझा है. वहां निजता पर ज़ोर है. आपने कभी सोचा कि ये फ़र्क़ किस वजह से है? आख़िर इंसान एक है, तो उसके बीच सोच का ये फ़ासला क्यों? आज ये समझने की कोशिश की जा रही है कि जापान के लोग तकनीक के मामले में सबसे आगे क्यों हैं? या विज्ञान की दुनिया में अमरीका या पश्चिमी देशों के लोग ही क्यों आगे रहते हैं? हम जिस तरह के माहौल में रहते हैं, उसका असर हमारे सोचने समझने की सलाहियत पर भी पड़ता था. जिस तरह पूरब पश्चिम के देशों या अकेले अमरीका में ही अलग-अलग सोच के लोग हैं, उससे ज़ाहिर होता है कि हमारा इतिहास, संस्कृति, भौगोलिक और सामाजिक माहौल मिलकर इंसान के सोचने के तरीक़े पर असर डालते हैं. यही तमाम देशों के लोगों की सोच में फ़र्क़ की सबसे बड़ी वजह है.  साल 2010 में बिहैवियरल ऐंड ब्रेन साइंसेज नाम की पत्रिका में एक लेख छपा था. इसे कई वैज्ञानिकों ने अपने तजुर्बे के आधार पर लिखा था. इसके मुताबिक़ एशियाई और पश्चिमी देशों के लोगों के दरम्यान सबसे बड़ा अंतर 'व्यक्तिवाद' और 'समूहवाद' का है. रिसर्च की बुनियाद पर ज़्यादातर जानकारों का मानना है कि पश्चिमी देशों के लोग ख़ुदपरस्त होते हैं. वो किसी और के बारे में सोचने से पहले ख़ुद अपने बारे में सोचते हैं. उनके लिए अपनी ख़ुशी सबसे पहले आती है. ऐसा करके वो अपना आत्मविश्वास बढ़ाते हैं. अमरीकियों में ख़ुद के बारे में ग़ज़ब की ख़ामख़याली होती है. क़रीब 94 फ़ीसद अमरीकी प्रोफेसर मानते हैं कि वो बाक़ी दुनिया के प्रोफ़ेसर्स के मुक़ाबले बेहतर हैं. वहीं एशियाई देशों के लोग, ख़ास तौर से भारत, चीन और जापान के लोग सिर्फ़ अपने बारे में ना सोचकर समूह के बारे में सोचते हैं. वो अक्सर अपनी क़ाबिलियत को कम करके बताते हैं. पश्चिमी देशों के लोग अपनी निजी पसंद और आज़ादी को सबसे ज़्यादा तरजीह देते हैं. ये लेख लिखने वालों में अमरीका की ब्रिटिश कोलंबिया यूनिवर्सिटी के जोसेफ हेनरिक भी थे. वो कहते हैं कि हम जिस तरह के सामाजिक तानेबाने से निकलकर आते हैं, उसका असर हमारी तार्किक क्षमताओं पर भी पड़ता है. पूर्वी सभ्यता के लोग रिश्तों को ज़्यादा गंभीरता और गहराई से देखते हैं. साथ ही वो हर एक समस्या को दूसरी मुश्किलों से जोड़कर उसका हल तलाशते हैं.  वहीं पश्चिमी सभ्यता में लोग, हर समस्या को उसी स्तर पर निपटाना चाहते हैं. वो दो मुसीबतों को जोड़कर नहीं देखते. उन्हें लगता है जो हालात हैं, वो हैं. उनका किसी और बात से ताल्लुक़ नहीं. मिसाल के लिए अगर आप व्यक्तिवादी, यानी पश्चिमी देशों में रहने वाले किसी शख़्स को ऐसी तस्वीर दिखाते हैं जिसमें एक लंबे क़द वाला इंसान छोटे क़द वाले को कुछ समझा रहा है, या डांट रहा है. इसे देखने के बाद वो यक़ीनन यही कहेगा कि लंबा आदमी बहुत ख़राब है. वहीं पूर्वी देशों के लोग इसी तस्वीर को देखकर पहले छोटे और बड़े आदमी के बीच रिश्ता तलाशेंगे. जैसे कि वो ये सोचेंगे कि कहीं लंबे कद वाला छोटे कद वाले का बॉस या पिता तो नहीं. कुछ जानकार मानते हैं कि अलग-अलग समाज में रहने वालों की सोच के इस फ़र्क़ की वजह आनुवांशिक है. यानी उन्हें पुश्तैनी तौर पर ऐसी सोच मिलती है.
