What are the causes of human pollution

Answer»

The burning of fossil fuels, in both energy plants and vehicles, releases massive amounts of carbon DIOXIDE into the atmosphere, causing climate change. Industrial processes also emit particulate matter, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and other noxious gases.Combustion from IndustryAlmost all of the common air pollutants can be produced by industrial processes. Some of these are produced by combustion of fossil fuels that drive the industrial process, resulting in particulates, ozone and nitrogen oxides.Transportation EmissionsCommon forms of transportation like cars, planes and ships generally use combustion to harness energy from fossil fuels. The combustion process releases pollutants into the air, such as PARTICLES and carbon monoxide, and also releases substances that quickly form into nitrogen oxides and ozone, which are important air pollutants.Agriculture Side-EffectsFarmers use machinery driven by fossil fuels to plow fields and harvest produce, and the animals that are raised in bulk for food also produce their own type of air pollution. Methane is a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect that allows global warming; it arises from intestinal gas released by livestock.Home HeatingKeeping homes warm is commonly the job of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. Their combustion means that heating is an important source of air pollutants like sulfur dioxide. If electricity is used to heat the house, the energy plants that produced it may also have been driven by fossil fuels.Home CookingThe energy used in cooking may have come from energy plants, in which case the potential for air pollution has arisen earlier. Alternatively, such as in developing countries, home cooking requires direct burning of wood or coals, which produces the particulate pollution at the point of use.Volcano EruptionsSometimes people think of air pollution as entirely man-made. In fact, natural processes release lots of substances into the air that are CLASSED as pollution. Sulfur dioxide is a major modern air pollutant, and according to National Geographic, volcanoes can release enough sulfur dioxide into the air to influence global cooling.Forest FiresForest fires release pollutants into the air in the same way as fireplaces burning wood produce pollution. They produce fine smoke particles, which, according to the EPA, are small enough to be able to get into the lungs and damage the lungs and the heart.Tobacco SmokeIn the developing world, homes may have visible smoke coming from the fire that is used to cook and heat the home. In the developed world, tobacco smoke is commonly the only visible type of air pollution inside the house. Both types of indoor smoke are linked to respiratory diseases.Metal SmeltingSpecific industries produce particular air pollutant profiles, and the major source of metal pollution like lead is metal smelting, although niche uses of lead, such as in the manufacture of certain aviation fuels, also contribute.Aerosols and CFCsChlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in aerosols were a major cause of ozone layer destruction, and their production was banned in the United States in 1995. Despite such bans worldwide, the U.S. National Library of Medicine says CFCs can last for a century in the atmosphere, where they continue to do damage. The ozone layer helps shield the planet from dangerous ultraviolet rays.Energy SourcesFactories need an energy source to power their production processes. In the United States, this has been electricity generated by fossil fuel burning, in particular coal. Air pollutants emitted by coal-fired power plants include nitrogen and sulfur oxides, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride gases, and arsenic, lead and other metals. Power generation for factories may cause greater air pollution than the factory processes. Natural gas is the least polluting fossil fuel for power generation. It emits nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide on burning but in far lower quantities than coalMetal SmeltingMetals provide machine components, vehicles, instruments and infrastructure in factories. Metal smelters that process and refine mineral ores and scrap metal create SILICA and metallic dusts during initial crushing and grinding. Heating and smelting processes produce emissions of sulfur and carbon oxides. Aluminum smelting can emit arsenic particulates, while lead and gold refining produces mercury and cyanide emissions.Petrochemical SmogFactory processes involve varied combinations of cleaning, painting and heating, while other raw material or appliance treatments release volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere. These are carbon- or hydrocarbon-based chemicals that quickly evaporate in the air. In the presence of sunlight, they react with other air pollutants like sulfur or nitrogen oxides from vehicle exhausts to create PEROXYACETYL nitrates, commonly known as photochemical smog. This looks like a thick brown haze and can linger for days or weeks over urban centers.

The one-stage prothrombin time of human plasma was PROLONGED by the addition to the thromboplastic MIXTURE of either colistin sulfate or polymyxin B. Colistimethate sodium, a derivative of colistin in which the amino groups of the cyclic polypeptide antibiotic are substituted, did not show this EFFECT. The inhibition was greater if the ANTIBIOTICS were incubated with thromboplastin in the absence of Ca++. In the Hicks–Pitney modification of the thromboplastin generation time test, the two polyamine antibiotics reduced the amount of thromboplastic activity generated. Generation, however, APPEARED to be initiated sooner. It is postulated that these actions by the antibiotics are the results of modifications in the zeta potentials of the thromboplastic micelles.Explanation:

Development is really not necessary to adress environmental issues explaination in hundred words

Answer»

. The view corresponds with point g in Fig. 2. It should be clear that weak environmental sustainability and the eco-efficiency concept of sustainable development have much in common, whilst strong environmental sustainability MOVES into the domain of both eco-efficiency and eco-justice. The proponents of conventional mainstream (growth-oriented) economic democracy will have no interest in any form of environmental sustainability. For them the ethic of utilitarianism is the key to human development. This utility is currently measured in organisations in terms of the generation of short-term profits for shareholders. In such a framework where price is the epi-centre of theory and practice, there can be no concern for either social or environmental issues. There is therefore no extremely weak category of sustainable development. Even though not a 'category', this point is indicated as d in Fig. 2.  Fig. 2 adequately represents the theory on which sustainable development and environmental sustainability are based. How, in practice, should government and business move from the position as depicted in Fig. 1 to a situationAnswer:Explanation:Given its unique economic and social circumstances, South Africa is in desperate need of economic development. The main impetus for growth will have to come from the mining and industrial SECTORS, which will have to play a key role in the future South African economy. The activities of these sectors markedly influence the quality and quantity of natural resources in the country. Sustainable development should be the ultimate goal of any development strategy. The question is how businesses should organise themselves to achieve the goal of sustainable development, with cleaner and ecologically more efficient production. This study first analyses the unique features of RESOURCE economics in South Africa. It then discusses the integration of sustainable development within an excavatory and production environment. Finally an appropriate business management philosophy will be outlined. 1. Resource Economics in South Africa The importance of resource economics in South Africa is acknowledged by a small but rapidly growing group of academics, nongovernmental organisations, parastatals and state departments. Numerous workshops*(2) were frequently held in an effort to bolster support for the subject, guide research and develop the approach that should be followed in future. Research was to cover, amongst other things, the valuation of bio-diversification, environmental accounting, market-based incentives and direct commandand-control measures, sustainable water management and the sustainable management of wilderness areas. Unfortunately, not much progress has been made so far beyond the point of discussion and research. The LACK of progress is largely due to the fact that the environmental milieu in South Africa is characterised by various unique and even conflicting features. The way in which the features of the environmental milieu are going to be managed determines the success rate of and the course of the future development of resource economics. Six features will be discussed here. 1. The government. In March 1994 the African National Congress (ANC) issued the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) (ANC 1994) as an election manifesto. In November 1994, an RDP White Paper (RSA 1994) was released. Whereas the first election document contained various sections and a chapter on the environment and the sustained use thereof, the White Paper made no reference to the environment or any environmental concerns at all. The White Paper served as a base document for the writing of the economic policy document Growth, Employment and Redistribution: a Macroeconomic Strategy (GEAR) (RSA 1996a). The environment does not feature in GEAR either. Government and the other NEDLAC PARTICIPANTS (Business South Africa and Labour) are actively implementing GEAR -without, however, incorporating environmental issues in the day-to-day activities. These documents were written despite the White Paper onEnvironmental Management policy for South Africa (RSA 1997c) and the fact that Section 24 of the Bill of Rights in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa guarantees environmental rights for all the people of South Africa. *(3) Although the government has committed itself to environmental equity and sustainable development through the constitution and the election document, economic policy and everyday realities do not reflect the same commitment. rights to mine a certain area by virtue of its ownership of the mineral rights.
