Why would anyone want to own land that lies under an ice sheet?

Answer»

Answer:

Science drives human investigation in Antarctica today, yet there's a reason why geologists often take centre-stage. Governments really want to know what's under the ice.

Whisper the word: oil. Some predictions suggest the amount of oil in Antarctica could be 200 billion BARRELS, far more than Kuwait or Abu Dhabi.

Antarctic oil is extremely difficult and, at the moment, prohibitively expensive to extract - but it's impossible to predict what the global economy will look like in 2048, when the protocol banning Antarctic PROSPECTING comes up for renewal. By that stage, an energy-hungry world could be desperate.

The Antarctic Treaty has put all territorial claims into abeyance, but that hasn't stopped rule-bending. The best way to get a toehold on what may lie beneath is to act as if you own the place.

One of the things nation-states do is stamp passports - so when Antarctic tourists visit the British station at Port Lockroy, they can have their passport stamped.

This is despite the FACT that international law doesn't recognise the existence of the British Antarctic Territory - indeed, both Chile and Argentina claim the same piece of land, and have their own passport stamps at the ready.

Another thing states do - or used to - is operate postal services.

At UKRAINE's Vernadsky base, I wrote myself a postcard, bought a decorative Ukrainian stamp with a cow on it, and dropped it into their post BOX. It took two months to arrive - not bad, from the ends of the earth.

But tourist fun connives at all the flag-waving. Russia has made a point of building bases all round the Antarctic continent.

The US operates a base at the South Pole, which conveniently straddles every territorial claim. This year China built its fourth base. Next year it will build a fifth.

All Antarctica's 68 bases are professedly peaceful research stations, established for scientific purposes - but the ban on militarisation is widely flouted.

Negative and positive impact of an informal sector

Answer»

Negative Impact:

Competition is therefore distorted because INEFFICIENT informal players stay in business and prevent more productive, formal companies from gaining market share. Any short-term employment benefits of informality are thus greatly outweighed by its long-term negative impact on economic growth and job creation.Additionally, employees within this sector often RECEIVE good pay as their employers have no tax obligations. What is more, employee effort in this sector of the ECONOMY is often directed TOWARDS achieving a LOYAL customer base through the creation of the best goods or products.

6864.

Explain the environmental issues caused by tourism industry in the northern and north-west mountain?

Answer»

Explanation:

People who live in mountain areas are usually much more aware of the limitations of their environment because of the limited habitable area and environmental extremes associated with steep topography and high altitudes. That is why there is a special unit on mountain problems. There are parallel units on other special environments, like islands and drylands.

Mountain environments are most significant in the Himalayas of central Asia, the Alps and their eastward extensions in Europe, the Pyrenées between France and Spain, and the chains of mountains along the western margins of North and South America.

WIDESPREAD ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

The following are qualitative descriptions of the most pressing environmental concerns facing most mountain areas.

Water Management

Mountains are often the major water sources for surrounding continental areas. An accumulating snow pack in the winter melts in the spring and summer, helping to even out the runoff through the year. If there are glaciers, they provide even greater water storage and regular runoff, but with climate change and GLOBAL warming, they are fast disappearing. Dams are often built in mountain areas to generate hydroelectric power and for flood control.

To maintain these important functions of mountains in water management, care must be taken to maintain vegetation cover in watersheds, or EROSION and landslides or avalanches may result. Mountain lakes and streams are naturally POOR in nutrients and are particularly susceptible to pollution.

Soil Loss

Steep mountain SLOPES are particularly susceptible to soil loss through erosion if the vegetation cover is damaged or removed. Soil is very slow to regenerate in mountain areas, so eroded areas may be permanently degraded. The productive soil is not only lost from the mountain slopes, but it pollutes streams, reducing habitat for fish, and fills lakes and reservoirs. Many dams have lost their usefulness prematurely because the lake behind the dam filled with sediment from upstream, reducing its capacity. In an extreme case, denuded mountain sides may CAUSE landslides, cutting roads, burying villages and damming rivers, with the possibility of later catastrophic flash floods downstream when the dams finally break.

How will u collect information of a particular place while going for a field visit

Answer»

Answer:

A field trip or excursion is a journey by a group of people to a place away from their normal environment. When done for students, it is also known as school trip in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, lakbay aral in the Philippines, Ensoku 遠足 (Ensoku) ('Excursion') in Japan and Klassenfahrt in Germany.

The purpose of the trip is usually observation for education, non-experimental research or to provide students with experiences outside their everyday ACTIVITIES, such as going camping with teachers and their classmates. The aim of this research is to observe the subject in its natural state and possibly collect samples. It is seen that more-advantaged children may have ALREADY experienced cultural institutions outside of school, and field trips provide a common ground with more-advantaged and less-advantaged children to have some of the same cultural experiences in the arts.[1]

Field trips are most often done in 3 steps: preparation, activities and follow-up activity. The connection between THEORY and its practical is thickly distorted. Also, the numerous problems students face in the real world due to mugging up the textbooks because of curriculum focusing on theoretical learning have further made it complicated.[2] Preparation applies to both the student and the teacher. Teachers often take the time to learn about the destination and the subject before the trip. Activities that happen on the field trips often include: lectures, tours, worksheets, videos and demonstrations. Follow-up activities are generally discussions that occur in the CLASSROOM once the field trip is completed.[3]

In Western culture people first come across this method during school years when classes are taken on school trips to visit a geological or geographical feature of the landscape, for example. Much of the early research into the natural sciences was of this form. Charles DARWIN is an important example of someone who has contributed to science through the use of field trips.[citation needed]

Popular field trip sites include zoos, nature centers, community agencies such as fire stations and hospitals, government agencies, local businesses, amusement parks, science museums, and factories.

6871.

8 degrees 4'Northn minutes to 37 degrees 66 degrees North parallel is the correct description of a location is this right or wrong then correct wrong one

Answer»

It MEANS 8 degrees, 4 minutes North Latitude. The terminology is somewhat archaic, and dates back to the days of sailing ships. It had been customary to Express location in degrees of Latitude (north or south of the equator (0 degrees)) and Longitude, since this had been used since the refinement of the Compass. With Britain becoming the primary sea power in the 16th Century, a Prime Meridian was added (0 degrees Longitude), which was determined by a MARKER at the British Naval Observatory in Greenwich, England. A Compass has 360 degrees, So the Equator, and the Prime Meridian, which passes through Greenwich, as well as the True North and South Poles, became the beginning markers for determining where you were on the Earth, anywhere. Later, with the development of more accurate timekeeping, first, more accurate sundials, and then clocks, minutes and seconds were added to Latitude, and Longitude, to determine location: 8 degrees, 15′ 23″ N, and 35 degrees, 22′ 55″ W, meant that the spot on the map was 8 degrees, 15 minutes, and 23 seconds (about 572.2 miles) north of the Equator, and 35 degrees, 22 minutes, 55 seconds (2453.0 miles) west of the Prime Meridian. Latitude was easy to determine, by the Sun's Location in the sky, and how far Polaris, the brightest star in the “little dipper” CONSTELLATION, was above the horizon, at night, but determining your exact Longitude, especially on the Ocean, with no reference points, required an accurate method of telling time. There were many shipwrecks, involving ships “off course", so the British Government offered a substantial monetary prize to anyone who came up with an accurate timepiece, that would keep its accuracy at sea. Someone came up with such a clock, which was named a Chronometer. The 360 degrees were divided into 24 parts, 15 degrees for each hour, with each degree being “worth" about four minutes; however EACH degree was divided into 60 minutes, and each minute, into 60 seconds. With decimalization, the location I gave earlier would be 8.2564 degrees N, and 35.3819 degrees W.; in the North Atlantic, about halfway between Guyana, and Sierra Leone.

Similarities between the cultural life of Pakistan and Norway ?

Answer»

Answer:

please mark me as brainliest

Explanation:

We focus on the impact of ambivalence resulting from perceived lack of recognition as full citizens in European societies among migrants and their descendants. Ambivalence in relation to experiences of particular traits of the political climate is further connected with ideas about mobility—how migrants and descendants may think about return migration—what we discuss in terms of ‘return imaginaries’. CultuThe political climate on immigration and diversity in various European societies has previously been analysed in relation to media representations, policy regimes and public opinion. This paper focuses more narrowly on how political climates affect migrant and post-migrant generations, as inhabitants of these European societies.re, IDEOLOGY and representations are seen as significant for CONTEMPORARY politics, not only with expressive but also with formative roles. With this perspective, the analysis explores THREE politically heated areas of debate: about immigration control, about social cohesion and integration agendas and about terrorist attacks. These three areas were inductively selected, drawing on analysis of qualitative data collected among Pakistani ORIGIN migrants and descendants in Norway and the UK. The two countries of residence are purposefully chosen because they in different ways reflect political climates affected by the rise of XENOPHOBIA and Islamophobia in Europe.
