हम रोज अपने बालों को कंघे की मदद से संवारते हैं ǃ कैसे ? बिल्‍कुल ठीक,आईने (MIRROR) की मदद से । आईने में अपने चेहरे च अन्‍य वस्‍तुओं को कैसे देखते हैं ? मैं अपने बचपन में अक्‍सर आइने से दूसरो की आँखे को चमकाकर उनको परेशान किया करता था । शायद आप ने भी यही क्रिया किसी ने किसी रूप में की हो चाहे वो कालाई घड़ी की मदद से गर्लफ्रेंण्‍ड की आँख चमकाकर या मोटर साइकिल की साइड मिरर में दीदार करके ही सही ।

ये सभी क्रियायें प्रकाश के परावर्तन के कारण ही सम्‍भव है । प्रकाश के परावर्तन में प्रकाश का मूल पथ भ्रमित कर दिया जाता है या हो जाता है । प्रकाश का परावर्तन कुछ सरल नियमों के अन्‍तर्गत होती है ।

परिभाषा

'जब कोई प्रकाश किरण एक माध्‍यम से चलकर दूसरे माध्‍यम की सतह से टकराकर वापस उसी माध्‍यम में लौट आये तो इस घटना अथवा क्रिया को प्रकाश का परावर्तन कहते हैं ।'

परावर्तन के नियम

1 – आने वाले किरण (आपाती किरण),परावर्तित किरण (जाने वाली किरण) एवं अभिलम्‍ब तीनों एक ही तल में होता है ।

2– आपतन कोण (i),परावर्तन कोण (R) के बराबर होता है । अतः i = r . इसका अर्थ यह निकलता है कि जितने कोण पर कोई प्रकाश किसी आईने पर गिरेगी उतने ही कोणी से गिरने पश्‍चात वापस चली जायेगी ।

3 – परावर्तन की क्रिया में प्रकाश की आवृत्‍ति एवं चाल परिवर्तित नहीं होती अर्थात् प्रकाश की ऊर्जा नहीं कम होती है ।

4 – नियम 2 से कहा जा सकता है कि यदि आपतन कोण शून्‍य हो तो परावर्तन कोण भी शून्‍य होगा इस स्‍थिति में प्रकाश जिस मार्ग से आती है उसी मार्ग से वापस चली जाती है । या इसे इस प्रकार भी कह सकते हैं कि अभिलम्‍बवत् आपतन की स्‍थिति में प्रकाश अपने आगमन मार्ग से परावर्तित हो जाती है ।
