Declining groundwater levels - a widespread problem.

Answer»

ater depletion Groundwater is a valuable resource both in the United States and throughout the world. Where surface water, such as lakes and rivers, are scarce or inaccessible, groundwater supplies many of the hydrologic needs of people everywhere. In the United States, it is the source of drinking water for about half the total population and nearly all of the rural population, and it provides over 50 billion gallons per day for agricultural needs. Groundwater depletion, a term often defined as long-term water-level declines caused by sustained groundwater pumping, is a key issue associated with groundwater use. Many areas of the United States are experiencing groundwater depletion. Excessive pumping can overdraw the groundwater "bank account" The water stored in the ground can be compared to money kept in a bank account. If you withdraw money at a faster rate than you deposit new money you will eventually start having account-supply problems. Pumping water out of the ground faster than it is replenished over the long-term causes similar problems. The volume of groundwater in storage is decreasing in many areas of the United States in response to pumping. Groundwater depletion is primarily caused by sustained groundwater pumping. Some of the negative effects of groundwater depletion: drying up of wells reduction of water in streams and lakes deterioration of water quality increased pumping costs land subsidenceWhat are some effects of groundwater depletion? Pumping groundwater at a faster rate than it can be recharged can have some negative effects of the environment and the people who make use of the water: Lowering of the water table The most severe CONSEQUENCE of excessive groundwater pumping is that the water table, below which the ground is saturated with water, can be lowered. For water to be withdrawn from the ground, water must be pumped from a well that reaches below the water table. If groundwater levels decline too far, then the well owner might have to deepen the well, drill a new well, or, at least, attempt to lower the pump. Also, as water levels decline, the rate of water the well can yield may decline. Increased costs for the user As the depth to water increases, the water must be lifted higher to reach the land surface. If pumps are USED to LIFT the water (as opposed to artesian wells), more energy is required to drive the pump. Using the well can become prohibitively expensive. Reduction of water in streams and lakes There is more of an interaction between the water in lakes and rivers and groundwater than most people think. Some, and often a great deal, of the water flowing in rivers comes from seepage of groundwater into the streambed. Groundwater contributes to streams in most physiographic and climatic settings. The proportion of stream water that comes from groundwater inflow varies according to a region's geography, geology, and climate. Groundwater pumping can alter how water moves between an aquifer and a stream, LAKE, or wetland by either intercepting groundwater flow that discharges into the surface-water body under natural conditions, or by increasing the rate of water movement from the surface-water body into an aquifer. A related effect of groundwater pumping is the lowering of groundwater levels below the depth that streamside or wetland vegetation needs to survive. The overall effect is a loss of riparian vegetation and wildlife habitat. Land subsidence The basic cause of land subsidence is a loss of support below ground. In other words, sometimes when water is taken out of the soil, the soil collapses, compacts, and drops. This depends on a number of factors, such as the type of soil and rock below the surface. Land subsidence is most often caused by HUMAN activities, mainly from the removal of subsurface water. Deterioration of water quality One water-quality threat to fresh groundwater supplies is contamination from saltwater intrusion. All of the water in the ground is not fresh water; much of the very deep groundwater and water below oceans is saline. In fact, an estimated 3.1 million cubic miles (12.9 cubic kilometers) of saline groundwater exists compared to about 2.6 million cubic miles (10.5 million cubic kilometers) of fresh groundwater (Gleick, P. H., 1996: Water resources. In Encyclopedia of Climate and Weather, ed. by S. H. Schneider, Oxford University Press, New York, vol. 2, pp. 817-823). Under natural conditions the boundary between the freshwater and saltwater tends to be relatively stable, but pumping can cause saltwater to migrate inland and upward, resulting in saltwater contamination of the water supply.

What do mean by reserved constituency?why was it necessary to give reservation

Answer»

ian Constitution gives the right to all its citizens to elect its representatives and also a chance to be elected as a representative. ... Those who are influential and resourceful may prevent them from winning elections.Reservation is such a controversial topic that if two people start debating on it none of them will win. Before going further into need of reservation I would like to share a recent tragedy that happened in my village. After the Bharat bandh agitation organised by SC/ST community against Supreme Court's order, few teenager boys (belongs to upper CASTE) of my village made a video. In that video they were abusing the SC people living in our village and they uploaded it on Facebook. Few people from the same community saw it and after discussing the Matter with other community people they complained it to Deputy commissioner (DC) of our district though there is a police station in village. When few days passed a police man came to the house of one of the boy involved in the matter (he lives near my home) asked his mother to send her SON to the police station. When the boys didn't apper before the SHO (Station House Officer),police started arresting them. So the accused boys were in the police custody and as soon as their parents got to know about the INCIDENT they rushed to the police station. So here start's the main part of the whole incident, when police denied to aquit the boys REACTION of their parents was “ How dare these lower caste people complained it to the police, what happened if our children abused them”. Not only this even younger and educated people also started accusing the lower caste people. My village is not a backward village it is just 16km away from Delhi. All the amenities are available in the village. Most of the people are educated especially the younger one. Still the mindset of people are that of older generation. If the situation of my village is like this what about the remote and backward villages of rest of the country. Although the reservation system has been worsen by political community but it is the requirement of our country. It was a small incident witnessed by me and there may be more harsher EVENTS in the remote areas of the country. So being a general category person I support the reservation system with some modifications which seems impossible because of vote bank politics.

♥️♥️♥️⤵️⤵️⤵️WHAT PROBLEM WE FACED (SOECIALLY GIRLS)????HOW WE GET RELIEF!!!!

Answer»

ys and girls have issues, but boys seem to be the ones getting the raw deal. According to Judith Kleinfeld, professor of psychology at the University of Alaska FAIRBANKS in the US, issues affecting boys are more serious than those affecting girls, but they have been neglected by policy makers. Her review of issues characterizing American boyhood, how they compare to those affecting girls, and the lack of initiatives in place to address them has just been published in the June issue of Springer’s journal Gender Issues.Professor Kleinfeld’s paper reviews the different viewpoints surrounding the debated existence of a so-called ‘boy crisis’. She then looks at gender differences in measures of educational achievement including literacy levels, college entrance tests, school grades, engagement in schools, dropout rates, as well as psychological issues affecting young people including mental health, SUICIDE, depression and conduct disorders. Lastly, she shows how boys and girls compare in terms of premature death and injuries and rates of delinquency and arrests.According to Judith Kleinfeld, boys get the raw deal. Compared with girls, American boys have LOWER rates of literacy, lower grades and engagement in school, higher drop-out from school, and DRAMATICALLY higher rates of suicide, premature death, injuries, and arrests. Boys are also placed more often in special education. Girls on the other hand are more LIKELY to have different problems including depression, suicidal thoughts and eating disorders. The researcher argues that although there have been numerous federal, state, school district, and foundation programs aimed at addressing issues faced by girls, led in part by the strong feminist movement, the same cannot be said for the problems encountered by boys. In her view, they have been largely neglected.Professor Kleinfeld concludes: “In terms of policy discussion and educational investments, the nation is addressing gender differences which barely exist but ignoring gender gaps which are substantial. Policy attention has focused on the supposed underachievement of females in mathematics and science but these gender gaps are small. In contrast, substantial gender gaps are occurring in reading and writing which place males at a serious disadvantage in the employment market and in college…. Both boys and girls face gendered problems which need policy attention.”

The steps involved in the framing of our constution?

Answer»

ution of India carries the legacy of our freedom struggle. Number of provisions included in the Constitution were already agreed upon during the nationalist movement. The following steps were taken before Independence in the MAKING of the Indian Constitution:1. In 1928, Motilal Nehru and eight others drafted the constitution of India and presented Nehru Report which recommended bicameral legislature, division of powers between the center and states, autonomy to the provinces which were later included in the constitution drafted after Independence,2. 1931 Karachi Session also established consensus on democratic structure with inclusion of RIGHT to freedom, equality, universal Adult Franchise.3. Government of India Act 1935 was an important step towards the framing of Constitution as it provided for an All India federation with division of powers between the Provinces and BRITISH India.4. 1937 Elections to the provisional  legislature provided experience of the working of legislative institutions and parliamentary form of government.5. Most important steps towards framing the constitution was in the form of Objective Resolution passed by Pt. Nehru in 1946, which was endorsed and accepted by the Constituent Assembly and which summarized the aims and objectives to be included in the constitution of Independent India. It focussed on freedom, rights of the people, democracy and  sovereignty.6. The constituent assembly that was tasked with framing of the Indian constitution was an elected body. Elections to the Constituent Assembly took place in July 1946, whereby the elected members of the Provisional legislative Assembly elected members of Constituent Assembly by proportional representation system. Thus, members were elected in an indirect manner.7. Later, the constituent assembly functioned in an open, consensual and SYSTEMATIC manner. The members of the Assembly laid great emphasis on discussions and reasoned argument on every aspect. 8. Our POLITICAL leaders were inspired from the various constitutions of the World.  9. Like they borrowed provision of bill of rights from US constitution and adopted the chapter on Fundamental rights , idea of Parliamentary form of government from the British. It also borrowed the provision of directive principles of state policy from Irish constitution, values of liberty, equality from the French revolution, idea of socio economic equality from the Soviet Union.10. But it may be noted that all these provisions  were not blindly incorporated . They were thoroughly discussed and debated .They were modified to suit Indian conditions.Read more on Brainly.in - brainly.in/question/1381622#readmore
