टेरिडोफाइटा (Pteridophyta) वनस्पतिज्ञों द्वारा किए गए पौधों के कई विभागों में से एक विभाग है। यह एक ओर पुष्प और बीज उत्पादक ब्राइटोफाइटा से और दूसरी ओर पुष्प और बीज न उत्पन्न करनेवाले जल के पौधों, "मॉसों" (mosses), से भिन्न होता है, तथापि इन दोनों वर्गों के पौधों के गुणों से कुछ कुछ गुणों में समानता रखता है। स्थल पर उत्पन्न होनेवाले पौधों को स्परमाटो-फाइटा (SPERMATOPHYTA) और केवल जल में उत्पन्न होनेवाले पौधों को थैलोफाइटा (THALLOPHYTA) कहते हैं। टेरिडोफ़ाइटा फर्न और फर्न किस्म के पौधे हैं। इनमें कुछ पौधे आज भी पाए जाते हैं, पर एक समय, 35 करोड़ वर्ष पूर्व, डिवोनी युग में इनका बाहुल्य और साम्राज्य था, जैसा इनके फाँसिलों से पता लगता है और ये संसार के प्रत्येक भाग में फैले हुए थे। कोयले के फॉसिलों में ये विशेष रूप से पाए जाते हैं। टेरिडोफाइटा ही कोयला क्षेत्र की उत्पत्ति के कारण हैं। ये कुछ सेंटीमीटर से लेकर 30 मीटर तक ऊँचे होते थे। लगभग सात करोड़ वर्षों तक पृथ्वीतल पर इनका आधिपत्य रहा था। बाद में जलवायु के परिवर्तन से इनका ह्रास होना आरंभ हुआ और विशेषत: इनके बड़े-बड़े पेड़ अब बिलकुल लुप्त हो गए हैं। इनका स्थान क्रमश: विवृतबीज (gymnosperm) और आवृतबीज (ANGIOSPERM) कोटि के पौधों ने ले लिया है, पर आज भी छोटे कद के कुछ टेरिडोफाइटा पाए जाते हैं। ये उष्णकटिबंध देशों में विशेष रूप से उपजते हैं, यद्यपि कुछ ठंडे, उत्तरी प्रदेशों में भी पाए गए हैं। अभी तक इनकी छ: हजार जातियाँ मालूम हो सकी हैं जबकि पुष्प और बीज उत्पन्न करनेवाले पौधों की संख्या लगभग एक लाख पचास हजार है।

3. Scrutiny of nomination papers: Scrutiny is done to check whether the information given in the nomination papers is correct or not.
