What steps did the French revolutionaries take to coidentity among the French people?Who were Marianne and Germania? What was the |
|
Answer» Explanat (a) Guiseppe Mazzini: He was an Italian revolutionary who played a significant role in promoting the idea of a unified Italian state. He believed that nations were the natural units of mankind, and so Italy (which was then divided into a number of small states and kingdoms) had to be forged into a SINGLE unified republic. During the 1830s, he strived to put together a coherent programme for such a unitary Italian Republic. He also set up two secret societies, namely Young Italy and Young Europe. These societies helped in the dissemination of his ideas. (b) Count Camillo de Cavour: Of the seven states of Italy, only Sardinia-Piedmont was ruled by an Italian princely house. When the revolutionary uprisings of 1831 and 1848 failed to unite Italy, the responsibility to establish a unified Italy fell upon this Italian state. King VICTOR Emmanuel II was its ruler and Cavour was the Chief Minister. Cavour led the movement to unite the separate states of nineteenth-century Italy. He engineered a careful diplomatic alliance with France, which helped Sardinia-Piedmont defeat the Austrian forces in 1859, and thereby free the northern part of Italy from the Austrian Habsburgs. (c) The Greek war of independence: This was a successful war of independence waged by Greek revolutionaries between 1821 and 1829 against the Ottoman Empire. The Greeks were supported by the West European COUNTRIES, while poets and artists hailed Greece as the cradle of European civilisation. Finally, the Treaty of Constantinople of 1832 recognised Greece as an independent nation. (d) Frankfurt parliament: It was an all-German National Assembly FORMED by the MIDDLE-class professionals, businessmen and prosperous artisans belonging to the different German regions. It was convened on 18 May, 1848 in the Church of St. Paul, in the city of Frankfurt. This assembly drafted a constitution for a German nation to be headed by a monarchy subject to a parliament. However, it faced opposition from the aristocracy and military. Also, as it was dominated by the middle classes, it lost its mass support base. In the end, it was forced to |

Answer» GUWAHATI: As the country battles acute water crisis in different REGIONS, Assam too is reeling under intense pressure of groundwater depletion. Growing POPULATION, ground water EXTRACTION beyond the permissible limit have been identified to be the main cause of water crisis in the urban pockets of Assam.According to the Ground Water Resource Estimation (GWRE) report in 2013, Assam enjoys the 'safe category' status when it comes to district-wise extraction of ground water. Sources in the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) said that LOCALISED variations, lack of SCOPE of recharging the lost groundwater and the geological set-up of the areas facing the crisis continue to add the the already-existing problem of water scarcity in the region."Concrete structures prevent any absorption of ground water, and water harvesting is still not a common practice in Guwahati. As a result, several localities are facing problems that come with groundwater depletion. If the utilized ground water is not replenished in the years to come, this crisis will definitely intensify," a senior official of the CGWB told TOI. |

Mughal architecture is an integral part of our heritage and needs to be preserved, Write an oath for your generation promising to protect monuments and work of art |
|
Answer» Mughal architecture, building style that flourished in northern and central India under the PATRONAGE of the Mughal emperors from the mid-16th to the late 17th CENTURY. The Mughal period marked a striking revival of Islamic architecture in northern India. Under the patronage of the Mughal emperors, Persian, Indian, and various provincial styles were fused to produce works of unusual quality and refinement. Old Delhi: Red FortThe tomb of the emperor Humāyūn (begun 1564) at Delhi inaugurated the new style, though it shows strong Persian influences. The FIRST great period of building activity occurred under the emperor Akbar (reigned 1556–1605) at Agra and at the new capital city of Fatehpur Sikri, which was founded in 1569. The latter city’s Great Mosque (1571; Jami Masjid), with its monumental Victory Gate (Buland Darzawa), is one of the finest mosques of the Mughal period. The great fort at Agra (1565–74) and the tomb of Akbar at Sikandra, near Agra, are other notable structures dating from his reign. Most of these early Mughal buildings use arches only sparingly, relying instead on post-and-lintel CONSTRUCTION. They are built of red sandstone or white marble. Delhi: Humāyūn's tomb Delhi: Humāyūn's tomb Humāyūn's tomb, Delhi. Carlos Arguelles/Shutterstock Mughal architecture reached its zenith during the reign of the emperor Shah Jahān (1628–58), its crowning achievement being the magnificent Taj Mahal. This period is marked by a fresh emergence in India of Persian features that had been seen earlier in the tomb of Humāyūn. The use of the double dome, a recessed archway inside a rectangular fronton, and parklike surroundings are all typical of the Shah Jahān period. Symmetry and balance between the parts of a building were always stressed, while the delicacy of DETAIL in Shah Jahān decorative work has seldom been surpassed. White marble was a favoured building material. After the Taj Mahal, the second major undertaking of Shah Jahān’s reign was the palace-fortress at Delhi, begun in 1638. Among its notable buildings are the red-sandstone-pillared Diwan-i-ʿAm (“Hall of Public Audience”) and the so-called Diwan-i-Khas (“Hall of Private Audience”), which housed the famous Peacock Throne. Outside the citadel is the impressive Great Mosque (1650–56; Jami Masjid), which sits on a raised foundation, is approached by a majestic flight of steps, and has an immense courtyard in front.
