দেশপ্রেম মানব জীবনের শ্রেষ্ঠ সম্পদ ও সহজাত প্রবৃত্তি। মানুষ যে দেশে জন্মগ্রহণ করে সেটিই তার জন্মভূমি। জন্মভূমির প্রতি, স্বজাতির প্রতি, মাতৃভাষার প্রতি ভালোবাসা ও গভীর শ্রদ্ধাবোধই দেশপ্রেম বা স্বদেশপ্রেম। দেশপ্রেমীর নিজ দেশের প্রতি রয়েছে অকৃত্রিম ভালোবাসা, সীমাহীন আনুগত্য। বিশ্বের উন্নত জাতিগুলো স্বদেশের জন্য আত্মত্যাগ করেই উন্নতির স্বর্ণশিখরে আরোহণ করেছে। দেশপ্রেম না থাকলে দেশ ও জাতির উন্নতি আশা করা যায় না। স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ ও সুখী দেশ গড়তে হলে তাই নাগরিকদের অবশ্যই স্বদেশপ্রেমী হতে হবে।

প্রত্যেক ব্যক্তি নিজের দেশকে ভালোবাসে। সকল জীবের মধ্যেই এ গুণ বিদ্যমান। বন্যপশুকে বনভূমি ছেড়ে লোকালয়ে আনলে, পাখিকে নীড়চ্যুত করলে তারা আর্তনাদ শুরু করে। এটি করে নিজ আবাসস্থানের প্রতি ভালোবাসার টানে। নিজ আবাসের প্রতি ভালোবাসা থেকে জন্ম নেয় স্বদেশের প্রতি ভালোবাসা। স্বদেশের মাটি, পানি, আলো, বাতাস যেন আমাদের জীবনেরই অঙ্গ। এগুলো থেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন হওয়া অঙ্গহানির শামিল।

মানুষ সমগ্র বিশ্বের বাসিন্দা হলেও একটি নির্দিষ্ট ভূখন্ডে সে বেড়ে উঠে। একটি বিশেষ দেশের অধিবাসী হিসেবে সে পরিচয় লাভ করে। এ দেশই তার জন্মভূমি, তার স্বদেশ। সে তার স্বদেশের নাগরিক। কিন্তু দেশের নাগরিক হলেই দেশপ্রেমিক হওয়া যায়। তার জন্য প্রয়োজন বিশেষ কিছু গুণ যা মানুষকে নাগরিক ও দেশপ্রেমিক থেকে আলাদা করে।

একজন দেশপ্রেমিক নাগরিকের ১০ টি গুণ নিয়ে আলোচনা করা হলঃ

১। দেশের মানুষকে ভালোবাসাঃ দেশের মানুষকে ভালোবাসার মধ্য দিয়েই দেশপ্রেমের সূচনা হয়। যে স্বদেশের মানুষকে ভালোবাসতে পারে না সে স্বদেশকেও ভালোবাসতে পারে না। মহীয়সী মাদার তেরেসা বলেছেনঃ

''যদি তুমি দৃশ্যমান মানুষকে ভালবাসতে না পারো , তবে অদৃশ্য ঈশ্বরকে কি করে ভালবাসবে'' ?

২। দেশেকে ভালোবাসা: কবি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর বলেছেন-

সার্থক জন্ম আমার জন্মেছি এই দেশে।

সার্থক জনম মাগো তোমায় ভালোবেসে।

দেশকে ভালোবাসা প্রকৃত দেশপ্রেমিকের মহৎ একটি  গুণ। কথায় নয় কাজের মাধ্যমে বুঝাতে হবে দেশকে ভালোবাসি। একজন মা যেমন শত কষ্ট করে ছোট শিশুকে বুকে আগলে রাখে ঠিক তেমনিভাবে আমাদের উচিত দেশকে নিজ সন্তানের মতো করে আগলে রাখা। নবী করীম (স.) দেশকে ভালোবেসে বলেছেন-

"হে মাতৃভূমি তোমার লোকেরা যদি আমার বিরুদ্ধে ষড়যন্ত্র না করত তবে আমি কখনই তোমাকে ছেড়ে যেতাম না।"

৩। দেশের উপকার করা: মূলত দেশপ্রেমের বহিঃপ্রকাশ হয় দেশের উপকারে আসার মাধ্যমে। প্রকাশ পায় জাতীয় জীবনের দুঃসময়ে মানুষের কর্মের মাধ্যমে। জৈনক মনীষী বলেছেন-

"স্বদেশের উপকারে নেই যার মন

কে বলে মানুষ তারে? পশু সেই জন।"

৪। দেশের নিয়ন-আইন মেনে চলা: দেশপ্রেমের বহিঃপ্রকাশ তখনি প্রকট হয় যখন সে সুগানগিরক হয়ে উঠে।  আর এখনজন সুনাগরিক তখনই হওয়া সম্ভব যখন সে স্বদেশের নিয়ন আইন ইত্যাদি মেনে চলবে।

৫। প্রতিশ্রুতিপরায়ণ : একজন দেশপ্রেমিককে হতে হবে প্রতিশ্রুতিপরায়ণ। প্রতিশ্রুতি হতে পারে দেশের কল্যাণের জন্য অথবা স্বদেশের মানুষের জন্য।

৬. কঠোর পরিশ্রমী ও মানবতাবোধ : প্রকৃত দেশপ্রেমিক শুধু একজন মানুষ নয় বরং একজন দৃষ্টান্তস্বরূপ। স্বদেশের জন্য তাকে কঠোর পরিশ্রমী হতে হবে। স্বদেশের মানুষের কষ্টে যদি তার অন্তর না কাঁদে তাহলে সে প্রকৃত দেশপ্রেমিক নয়। তাকে হতে হবে উদার মনের।

৭. দানশীল ও শ্রদ্ধাশীল : দানশীলতা একটি মহৎ গুণ। একজন দেশপ্রেমিক যত বেশি দানশীল হবে যত বেশি মানুষের উপকারে আসবে ততো বেশি তিনি মানুষের মনে স্থান পাবেন।  মানুষ তাকে মন থেকে শ্রদ্ধা করবে।

৮. দেশের বিপদে নিজের জীবন বিপন্ন করা : দেশের বিপদে এগিয়ে আসা এখন দেশপ্রেমিকের প্রধান দায়িত্ব। প্রয়োজনে নিজের জীবনকে বিপদে ফেলে দেশকে বিপদ থেকে রক্ষা করা। ঠিক যেমন ১৯৭১ সালে বাংলা ধামাল ছেলেরা জীবন দিয়েছিলো বাংলার জন্য 

৯. সংস্কৃতিপরায়ণ: শুধু দেশের নিয়ন-আইন মেনে চলার মধ্য দিয়ে দেশপ্রেম পরিপূর্ণরূপে প্রকাশ পায় না। দেশপ্রেমের বড় একটা অংশজুড়ে রয়েছে স্বদেশের সংস্কৃতি। দেশপ্রেমিককে হতে হবে সংস্কৃতিমনা। দেশের সংস্কৃতি ও ইতিহাস ছড়িয়ে দিতে হবে সবখানে সারা বিশ্বে। কারণ আমরাই একমাত্র যারা দেশের জন্য ভাষার জন্য অধিকারের জন্য জীবন দিয়েছি।

১০. দেশের স্বাধীনতা ও সার্বভৌমত্ব : দেশপ্রেমিক দেশের স্বাধীনতা ও সার্বভৌমত্ব রক্ষায় সর্বত্র সচেষ্ট থাকবে।

১১. দেশের সুনাম নষ্ট হয় এমন কোন কাজ করা থেকে বিরত থাকতে হবে

১২. জাতীয় সম্পদ রক্ষা করা বা ক্ষতি সাধন না করার মানসিকতা রাখতে হবে
