. Write answers to the following questionsin your own words.(a) How are the components of mixturesseparated by simple methods?

Answer»

Separating Mixtures

Mixtures come in many forms and phases. Most of them can be separated, and the kind of separation method depends on the kind of mixture it is. Below are some common separation methods:

Paper ChromatographyThis method is often used in the food industry. It is used to identify chemicals (coloring agents) in foods or inks. For example, if a scientist wants to know how many substances are in a particular blob of ink, paper chromatography can be used.

FiltrationThis is a more common method of separating an insoluble solid from a liquid. An example of such a mixture is sand and water. Filtration is used in water treatment plants, where water from rivers is filtered to remove solid particles.

EvaporationEvaporation is great for separating a mixture (solution) of a soluble solid and a solvent. The process involves heating the solution until the solvent evaporates (turns into gas) leaving behind the solid residue.

Simple distillationThis method is best for separating a liquid from a solution. In a way, the concept is similar to evaporation, but in this case, the vapor is collected by condensation. For example, if you want to separate water from a salt solution, simple distillation would be great for this.

Fractional distillationSimilar to simple distillation, fractional distillation is best for separating a solution of two miscible liquids. (Miscible liquids are liquids that dissolve in each other). The Fractional method takes advantage of the different boiling points of the two liquids.

MagnetismMagnetism is ideal for separating mixtures of two solids with one part having magnetic properties. Some metals like iron, nickel and cobalt have magnetic properties whiles gold, silver and aluminum do not. Magnetic elements are attracted to a magnet.

(c) We say that women did not enjoy the same position as they did during the Vedic periodn Work

Answer»

According to one view women during the Vedic period occupied an exalted position and they enjoyed a fair amount of personal freedom and equal rights with men. But another view holds that birth of a girl was not a welcome event. However she did not suffer due to that reason. She was given all the privileges entitled to a son. No discrimination was made on the basis of education. At least twenty women composed Rig Vedic Hymns. Gargi and Maitreyi were the leading philosophers of the time.

Women, in the Vedic era, so excelled in the sphere of education that even the deity of learning was conceived of as a female popularly known as ‘Saraswati’. Girls were allowed to enter into the Gurukulas along with boys. There are also instances of female Rishis, such as Ghosa, Kakhivati Surya Savitri, Indrani, Shradha Kamayani, Yami Shachi, Poulomi, Urvashi etc. Marriage in the Vedic Period was considered a social and religious duty and united the couple on an equal footing.

2. Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is a boon for the IT industryJustify this statement with the help of examples.

Answer»

AVirtual Learning Environment(VLE) is an integrateddistance learningplatform that typically incorporates course materials, homework, tests, assessments, and other tools that are external to the classroom experience. VLEs may also include social media tools that allow learners and instructors to interact via chat or online discussion boards. VLEs generally use Web 2.0 tools, and also include a content management system. VLEs are often integrated with an enterprise’sLMS/LCMS, orERPsystems. Virtual learning environments may provide for bothsynchronousandasynchronouslearning programs. Some VLEs now incorporate social gaming environments as an extension of the platform

exampleThe most commonly used examples of a VLE includeMoodle(link is external)andBlackboard(link is external). Moodle is free to download, but doesn’t take into account the substantial cost of hosting and managing the platform effectively. In the case of Universities and Colleges, that invariably involves an IT department and a dedicated spokesperson to ‘get it right’ as most do. How staff use it is another subject all together. But in the case of the WBL sector, very few have the spare infrastructure or personnel to take on such a system and designing content takes a different set of skills entirely and that takes time. Time is a cost that few can afford, but must be factored in or frankly, don’t start.
