The first Satygraha movement was launched in the Champaran district of Bihar in 1917. The tenants were forced to grow indigo on large portion of their land, had to pay heavy taxes and got very little for their produce.

Resentment and anger was obvious but they did not know how to revolt against the illegal and unjustified actions of the their landlaords who worked under the British.

Discuss the process of establishment of colonies in west Europe, Asia and Africa.

Answer»

European colonialism and colonization was the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically. Research suggests, the current conditions of postcolonial societies have roots in colonial actions and policies.[1][2] For example, colonial policies, such as the type of rule implemented,[3] the nature of investments,[4][5] and identity of the colonizers,[6] are cited as impacting postcolonial states. Examination of the state-building process, economic development, and cultural norms and mores shows the direct and indirect consequences of colonialism on the postcolonial states.

"Indian agriculture is a gamble on the monsoon". Justify the statement.

Answer»

Agriculture in India is highly dependent on themonsoons and can thus be called a gamble. With agriculture being an important part of the economy, many earn their livelihood by growing crops. The yield however, depends on getting the right amount of rain, at the right time. This is where the monsoons play havoc.

If the monsoons begin too early, or are delayed, they adversely affect the crops. Unfortunately, there are no substantial back-up mechanisms in place. Irrigation becomes challenging too, since the rain-fed rivers often dry up and are of no help to the farmers.Similarly, the amount of rainfall is also not constant. Lower than expected precipitation causes crops to wilt while greater than necessary rainfall causes waterlogging issues. In any case, the farmer ends up suffering because the production is not as desired.

Though the farmer toils all year long, there is no guarantee that his hard work will bear fruit. He is at the mercy of the monsoons and that is what makes agriculture a gamble.
