Give answers.a. State the merits of Whittaker's methodof classification.

Answer»

Merits of R. H. Whittaker 5 Kingdom Classification·

This system of classification looks more scientific and natural because of the following considerations: -1) It is largely the most accepted system of modern classification mainly because of the phylogenetic placing of different groups of living organisms ·2) Separation of prokaryotes into an independent kingdom is justifiable because they differ from all other organisms in their general organization. ·3) Grouping of all unicellular eukaryotes under the kingdom Protista has solved many problems, particularly related to the position of organisms like Euglena. ·4) Elevation of the group fungi to the status of a kingdom is justifiable since fungi totally differ from other primitive eukaryotes like algae and protozoans. ·5) The kingdoms plantae and animalia are now more homogeneous groups than they were in the two kingdom classification as it shows the phylogeny of different life styles. ·6) The five-kingdom classification gives a clear indication of cellular organization and modes of nutrition, the characters which appeared very early in the evolution of life.

a) Why were the British able to rule on the Indian subcontinent?b) Who was Nadir Shah? Why did he attack on india?

Answer»

There are a good number of reasons why the British were able to do so, and in fact rule over India effectively for over a century.

Disunity among Indian princely states. India was more a collection of warring princely states, at loggerheads with each other. The British sucessfully used this to play off one state against another. Add to it there was no dearth of people willing to betray the kingdom for a few pieces of silver. Robert Clive succeeded at Plassey, because Mir Jaffar was willing to betray his master Siraj-Ud-Daulah in lie of being the Nawab. Mir Jaffar himself was betrayed by Mir Qasim later on.Tipu Sultan one of the most redoubtable fighters against the British rule, was finally defeated, as the Marathas, King of Mysore, Nizam of Hyderabad all joined hands with the British.

Superiority over other colonial powers. The other colonial powers in India competing for the share of resources were France,Portugal,Denmark, Holland. Of the 4, Denmark and Holland could never really be serious competitors to the British, they had their own trading posts, scattered around, but were never a serious threat. Portugal focussed primarily on the Western coast, Goa, parts of Kerala, Karnataka, and this left the British with vast swathes of unoccupied territory. That left France as the major contender to Britian in the race for colonialism. The British Army was more well equipped, more professional, more disciplined compared to the French army, suffering from indiscipline and corruption. This made the British win key battles all over the East Coast, as they effectively grabbed control.

Answer»

The East India Company arrived first at Surat, India in 1608 in the shipHector commanded by William Hawkins and within a few years had established a permanent factory there. Surat was the port used by the textile manufacturers of Gujerat and was the most important centre for the overseas trade of the Mughal Empire. However the Portuguese already had trading arrangements with the Mughal authorities and supremacy on the seas and it would take several years for the English to gain control. A factory was eventually established at Surat in 1612 when the Portuguese fleet was defeated by the English.

On the other side of India the East India Company had since 1611 been based at Masulipatam on the Coromandel coast of India.

Short answer questions:(a) To what extent was Russian participation in World War I responsible for the Russian Revolution in 1917ns.

Answer»

World War I was the direct catalyst for the Russian Revolution of 1917. The poor performance of the Russian government in the Great War, along with the stress that the war put on the Russian society and economy, drove people who were already generally unhappy with the regime to rebel.

Russians had been unhappy for decades with the autocratic tsarist regime and the country’s economic backwardness. This unhappiness had been exacerbated by the country’s loss in the war with Japan in 1905. Less than ten years later, the country was at war again. Once again, Russia suffered humiliating defeats. This made people generally more unhappy with their government. The unhappiness was deepened by the fact that about 1.7 million Russians were killed in the war and about 5 million wounded.
