Freely suspended bar magnet comes to rest pointing north-south direction such thatA. The North Pole of bar magnet points to geometric North Pole of earth.B. The North Pole of bar magnet points to geometric South Pole of earth.C. The South Pole of bar magnet points to geometric North Pole of earth.D. The South Pole of bar magnet points to geometric North Pole of earth. |
| Answer» Correct Answer - B | |

Which of the following is a non- magnetic substance ?A. NickelB. IronC. CobaltD. None of these |
| Answer» Correct Answer - D | |

Define the following terms. (a) Magnetic poles (b) Magnetic North Pole ( c) Magnetic South Pole (d) Magnetic axis ( e) Length of a bar magnet (f) Effective length of a bar magnet (g) Magnetic equator |
|
Answer» (i) Magnetic poles: The end points of a magnet where most of its magnetic power is concentrated are called pole of a magnet . (ii) Magnetic North Pole : The point N at the end of the freely suspended bar magnet which points towards the geographic North Pole is called magnetic North Pole. (iii) Magnetic South Pole : The piont S at the end of the freely suspended bar magnet which points towards the geographic South Pole is called magnetic South pole. (iv) Magnetic axis : An imaginary line passing through the magnetic North Pole and South Pole of a bar magnet is called magnetic axis. (v) Length of a bar magnet : Total distance from the North Pole to the centre of a magnet or the South Pole to the centre of a magnet is called length of a magnet. (vi) Effective length: The shortest lenght between teh magnetic North Pole and the magnetic South Pole of a magnet is called effective length of the magnet. ltrbgt (vii) Magnetic equator: An imaginary line passing through the centre of the magnet and perpendicular to the magnetic axis is called mangetic equator. |

Consider a magnet which is hung to the hook of a spring as shown in figure. Then what could be the possible option from the following? (i) X,A are North Pole and Y,B are south Pole (ii) X, B are North Pole and Y,A are South Pole (iii) A,B are South Pole and X,Y are North Pole (iv) X,A are South Pole and Y,B are North Pole.A. Only(ii)B. Only (i)C. Both (i) and (ii)D. Both (ii) and (iii) |
|
Answer» In a pair of magnet, like poles repel and unlike poles attract each other. According to the figure, Y and A should be same poles. Since the distance has decreased from 15 cm to 10 cm, this means that A is repellying y. Thus, X ,B are North Pole and Y, A are south Pole. |
