Bessie was convinced that the youngman was indeed Harry because of his unique way of talking about the past events. His annoyance and disgust for his father was the same as Captain Hagberd used to tell her in their backyard conversation. Besides, he resembled Captain Hagberd which made her convinced that he was his son.

When Captain Hagberd expressed his desire to make Bessie his daughter-in-law, it made her blush.

Captain Hagberd keeps his backyard and front of his house ready to sow seeds of many flowers of different varieties. He digs small plots of land non stop thinking that the flowers will be planted when his son Harry comes home. He buys seeds, utensils, paint, varnish and carpets of latest designs, furniture, show cases, etc.

The consistency which one finds in the old man’s madness is due to his old age, the sorrow of his lost son Harry, self restraint, education and moody in behaviour. He is an affectionate and compassionate father. He also has sympathy for Bessie. Due to his loneliness, he feels comfortable in her presence.

The exotic feeling of being happy is called self esteem. It is formed by virtues. Every individual starts forming his behaviour as soon as he comes into this world. We see that in this story, self-esteem is reflected in many ways. Captain Hagberd is obsessed by bereavement of his beloved son and can hear nothing against him. Josiah Carvil, a blind old man is a domestic tyrant. His happiness lies in practising strict discipline on her daughter. Due to this impulsive behaviour, Bessie has become submissive. Harry is a vagabond. He wants to enjoy life by spending money uselessly.

The stranger who met Captain was perhaps Harry, his long lost son, whom he was unable to recognise. Harry asked if he was Captain Hagberd and had advertised for his son. Captain Hagberd interrupted him in between and said that his son would come tomorrow. Captain leaned on his spade and said, “Go your way.”

Bessie lived a dejected life in a poor cottage with her blind and widowed father. She attended on her bad temperd father who roared, shouted and scolded her at a slightest mistake. He did not pick even a spoon by himself. She obeyed him and suffered silently with occasional signs of irritation and disgust.

He then advertised his pain among masses. His loneliness made him eccentric. He was very much disturbed for his lost son. He was sure that his son would be back home the next day.

Mr Carvil was a very cruel man and father. He did not even pick a spoon upto his mouth without the help of his daughter, Bessie. He scolded and abused her frequently. He was jealous of her conversation with the Captain. His body was gigantic like a hippopotamus. His cries were like that of a lion.

Bessie’s father behaved very rudely with her. He shouted and scolded her and did not pick even a spoon himself.

The circumstances which brought Captain Hagberd to Colebrook were:

1. His wife had died and his son had abandoned home sixteen years ago when he was only fourteen.
2. He was a retired sailor.
3. A hoax in the form of a letter compelled him to sell his property at Colchester (UK) and settle in Colebrook. Someone had informed him in that letter that Harry was seen in Colebrook.

वे परिस्थितियाँ जो हेगबर्ड को कोलेब्रुक ले आईं, वे थीं –

1. उसकी पत्नी मर गई थी और उसका बेटा चौदह वर्ष की अवस्था में ही सोलह वर्ष पहले घर से भाग गया। था।

Bessie’s reactions to old Hagberd’s ravings has been very calm and balanced. She listens him silently. She just nods (mute acceptance) to his ravings. Hagberd always expresses ‘fatherly love to her, hence she has been sympathetic towards him. She understands that he is always worried and upset for his long lost son, Harry.

वृद्ध हैगबर्ड की विक्षिप्ततापूर्ण (विचित्र) बातों के प्रति बेसी की प्रतिक्रियाएँ बहुत शान्त और संतुलित रहती हैं। वह उसे चुपचाप सुनती रहती है। वह सिर्फ उसकी बातों को सिर हिलाकर (मूक स्वीकृति में) स्वीकार करती है। हैगबर्ड हमेशा उसके प्रति पिता तुल्य स्नेह व्यक्त करता है। वह (बेसी) समझती है कि वह बहुत दिन पहले खो चुके अपने बेटे (हैरी) के कारण हमेशा चिन्तित और परेशान रहती है।

Captain Hagberd had been an extremely affectionate person for living on land instead of sea. He was a balanced and rational sort of person. Undoubtedly, he worked as a sailor but wanted to go near the seashore to watch innumerable houses and people gathered round firesides. Being a voyager, he was a homesick person.

समुद्र की अपेक्षा पृथ्वी का जीवन कैप्टन को बहुत प्रिय था। वह संतुलित तथा विवेकशील था। निसन्देह रूप से वह नाविक का कार्य करता था, परन्तु समुद्री किनारे के पास जाकर अगणित मकानों को और आग के सहारे एकत्र लोगों को देखना चाहता था। एक नाविक होते हुए भी वह एक गृहासक्त व्यक्ति था।
