(1)Epiphytic roots (2) Sucking roots.(L.A.) |
Answer»
(1) The orchids (of family Orchidaceae-monocotyledons) are epiphytes. They possess the aerial roots hanging in the air.The velamen consists of several layers of dead cells often with spirally thickened and perforated walls, which act as sponge, soaking up water that runs over it. The velamen is multiple epidermis. The velamen is thought to function as a protective tissue, preventing undue water loss from the delicate cortical cells of the exposed aerial root.

(2) Sucking Roots These are the rootsof parasites. The parasites penetrate the small adventitious rootlets into the tissues of the host so that there is connection between the conducting systems of the two plants. This is the channel through which food is sucked in by the parasite from the host. Such sucking roots or haustoria are found in many total and partial parasites.
| |
