27, Draw a labeled diagram showing vacuole. Give its important feature andfunction. Differentiate between vacuoles of plant cell and animal cell

Answer»
Vacuoles are storage sacs for solid or liquid contents. Vacuoles are small sized in animal cells while in plant cells they are very large. The central vacuole of some plant cells may occupy 50-90% of the cell volume. In plant cells vacuoles are full of cell sap and provide turgidity and rigidity to the cell.

Many substances of importance in the life of the plant cell are stored in vacuoles. These include amino acids, sugars, various organic acids and some proteins.

plant cell has only one large vacuole that covers almost 90% cellular space sometimes. Plant cells needs larger vacuole because vacuole helps them to maintain turgid pressure within the cell. Vacuoles store water and become turgid when water enters the cell through osmosis. When cell loses water vacuoles helps the cell to retain the shape. Vacuoles also maintain the osmotic concentration within the cell.

Animal cells have one or more vacuoles which are smaller in shape. In animal cell the main function of vacuoles is to store nutrients ,ions and water. Vacuoles plays an important role in endocytosis and exocytosis .They store the waste material (exocytosis) or food (endocytosis) and transport it inside the cell. Lysosomes secrete its enzymes within it and helps in digestion. bacteria are also engulfed by cell and destroyed in animal vacuole by lysosomal enzymes.
