The functions of digestive enzymes are ptyalin converts starch (complex carbohydrates) into maltose, pepsin break down proteins into peptides and amino acids ,lipase acts on fats and forms fatty and glycerol and lastly maltase acts on maltose and forms glucose.

Digestive enzymes helps in digesting complex food materials into simpler molecules for absorption by the body. During digestion of good, different parts of the alimentary canal produces different digestive enzymes that helps in digestion of different components of food . For example , Saliva produces salivary amylase that digests the starch. Stomach contain gastric gland that produces pepsin that helps in protein digestion. Apart from that other enzymes such as trypsin , chymatrypsin also helps in protein digestion.
