Answer» Heat can cause thermal expansion which can lead to greater surface contact pressures leading higher heating rate of heating. It can lead to a highly destructive "thermal runaway" situation. Generally when two friction surfaces contact, the microscopic surface high points known as "asperities" contact each other and break off resulting in breakaway wear particles. Hydrodynamic fluid lubrication is usually the best way to avoid friction induced heating. The science of surface interaction studies is known as "tribology". |
