1.

(a) Explain briefly the fact that electromagnetic waves carry energy. (b) Why do we not feel the pressure due to sunshine?

Answer»

Solution :(a) An electromagnetic wave CONTAINS both electric and magnetic fields and thus must have non-zero energy density associated with it. If we consider a plane PERPENDICULAR to the direction of propagation of an electromagnetic wave, electric charges on this plane will be SET and sustained in motion by the electric and magnetic fields of the electromagnetic waves. The charges thus acquire energy from the waves. This is possible only if electromagnetic wave carries energy.
(b) Solar radiation exert radiation pressure of the ORDER of `7 xx 10^(-6) Pa`. As the pressure due to sunshine is EXTREMELY small, we do not feel it.
