A sceince student in a science fair demonstrated the existence of water and ice in a same container at 0^(@)C and water and steam in a same closed container at 100^(@)C explain how is it possible to have two different states of matter at the same temperature |
| Answer» Solution :When we SUPPLY heat energy to ice its temperature increase till reaches `0^(@)C` but CONTINUES to be ice only on further supply of heat energy there is no rise in temperature but ice converets into water at same `0^(@)C` temperature .Heat supplied is used for phasetransfor mation (State CHANG) only similarly wter at `100^(@)C` on supplying heat energy converts in to steam WITHOUT any change in temperauter .The heat absorbed is utilized only to change the state of matter from liquid state to gaseous state hence ice and waterexist in contact at `0^(@)C` and water and steam exist in contact at `100^(@)C` | |
