A solenoid is connected to a battery so that a steady current flows through it. If an iron core is inserted into the solenoid, will the current increase or decrease ? Explain.

Answer»

Solution :The current flowing through solenoid coil decrease. As the iron core is INSERTED into the solenoid, the magnetic field and consequently the magnetic FLUX increases. In accordance with Lenz.s LAW the INDUCED current resists the increase in magnetic flux. Hence, an induced current is set up in the solenoid coil in a direction opposite to that of battery current. As a result, the current flowing in soil decreases.
