a. Why do we make use of glass in windows

Answer»
Basically because glass is the cheapest material that light passes through readily. The basic function of a window is to allow light into a building and since cost is a major driver in building materials glass is the best choice. Other materials that might work would be things like quartz crystal (this is much more expensive and has to be made a lot thicker) and plastics (also inexpensive but don’t transmit light as well). Glass also has the benefit of history because it was the only material used for windows for centuries there has been a buildup of industry and technology around it as the window material of choice. So now even though there are other options for window materials there are economies of scale around the use of glass.
