1.

Account for the following: (i) Formaldehyde gives Cannizzaro's reaction whereas acetaldehyde does not. (ii) Carboxylic acids do not give characteristic reactions of carbonyl group.

Answer»

Solution :(i) Fromaldehyde does not have a -HYDROGEN atom, THEREFORE , it gives Cannizzaro.s reaction.
Acetaldehyde has a hydrogen atom, therefore, it cannot undergo Cannizzaro.s reaction.
(ii) Due to resonance , carboxylic acids do not give the tests of carbonyl group.

The position of the carbonyl group keeps CHANGING.
