Aldehyde and ketone molecules having alpha- hydrogen atoms undergo aldol condensation reaction. Aldol condensation reaction preceeds in acidic and basic conditions. In basic medium, aldol condensation product will be formed involving enolate ion formation. Here the enolate ion acts as nucleophile.
