Aldehydes and ketones may be distinguished by using
Answer»
saturated solution of `NaHSO_3` 2:4 dinitrophenylhydrazine Tollen's reagent BAEYER's reagent
Solution :Aldehydes , being reducing agents , reduce Tollen's reagent (am. `AgNO_3`) to produce a MIRROR to free silver. Ketones are not reducing agents and do not react with Tollen's reagent. With the REAGENTS (a) and (b) both aldehydes and ketones react to give insoluble crystalline derivatives. With (d) neither the aldehydes nor the ketones react.
