An iron rod is immersed in a solution containing NiSO4 and ZnSO4. When the concentration of each salt is 1M, predict giving reasons which of the following reactions is likely to proceed? (i) Iron reduces Zn2+ ions, (ii) Iron reduces Ni2+ ions. |

Answer» Given: E°(Zn2+/Zn) = 0.76V, E°(Fe2+/Fe) = 0.44V and E°(Ni2+/Ni) = 0.25V (i) The reduction potential of iron is more than that of zinc. Therefore, iron will be reduced. In other words Zn2+ will not be reduced. (ii) The reduction potential of Ni2+ is more than that of Iron. Therefore, Ni2+ will be reduced by iron. |
