Active Voice REFERS to a sentence in which the subject is performing the action.

Passive Voice refers to a sentence in which the subject UNDERGOES the action. In other words, it is writing the sentence in reverse order.

Example: She is writing a story. (Active)

               A story is being WRITTEN by her. (Passive)

NOTE: Sentences that convey habitual actions cannot be changed to passive mode.

1. Sarojini Naidu wrote this poem.  (Active)

• This poem was written by Sarojini Naidu. (Passive)

2. His teacher rewarded him. (Active)

• He was rewarded by his teacher. (Passive)

3. She did not buy a new dress.  (Active)

• A new dress was not bought by her. (Passive)

4. Who defeated the Mughals?  (Active)

• By whom were the Mughals defeated? (Passive)

5. They welcomed the guests.  (Active)

• The guests were welcomed by them. (Passive)

6. The dog chased the cat.  (Active)

• The cat was chased by the dog. (Passive)

7. The policeman caught the THIEF.  (Active)

• The thief was caught by the policeman. (Passive)

8. Everybody enjoyed the melodious song.​ (Active)

• The melodious song was enjoyed by everybody. (Passive)
