Define : (a) Osmosis (b) Freezing point |
|
Answer» (a) Osmosis : A process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semi-permeable memebrane concentrated one. When the membrane permits the solvent molecules to come out through the membrane, it is called exosmosis. When the membrane permits the solvent molecules to enter inside, it is called endosmosis. The minimum excess pressure that has to be applied on the solution to prevent the entry of the solvent into the solution through the semi-permeable membrane is called the osmotic pressure. (b) Freezing point : Freezing point of a substance is the temperature at which the solid and liquid forms of a substance are in equilibrium i.e., solid and liquid form of a substance have same vapour pressure Freezing point of the solution is always lower than that of pure solvent. the decrease in freezing point is known as depression in freezing point. |
