1.

Define adsorption with an example. What is the role of adsorption in heterogeneous catalysis?

Answer»

Solution :The accumulation of molecular species at the surface rather than in the bulk of a solid or a liquid is called adsorption.
Example: the air becomes dry in the PRESENCE of silica gel because the WATER molecules get adsorbed at the surface of the gel.
ROLE of adsorption:
Adsorption of reactants on the solid surface of the catalst increases the concentration and the rate of reaction. Manufacture of `NH_3` using iron as CATALYST, manufacture of `H_2SO_4` by Contact Process are some EXAMPLES of heterogeneous catalysis.
