Answer» Hooke's law,law of elasticitydiscovered by the English scientist RobertHookein 1660, which statesthat, for relatively small deformations of an object, the displacement or size of the deformation is directly proportional to the deforming force or load. Depending upon the nature of force applied on the body, themodulus of the elasticity is classified in the following three types: 1. Young’s Modulus of Elasticity (Y) When a wire is acted upon by two equal and opposite forces in the direction of itslength, the length of the body is changed. The change in length per unit length (Δl/l) is called the longitudinal strain and the restoring force (which is equal to the applied force in equilibrium) per unit area of cross-section of wire is called the longitudinal stress. |
