Define the following terms with a suitable example of each : (i) Associated colloids(ii) O/W emulsion

Answer»

Solution :(i) Associated colloids : There are some substances which at low concentration behave as normal STRONG ELECTROLYTES, but at higher concentrations EXHIBIT colloidal behaviour due to the formation of aggregates. The aggregated particles thus formed are CALLED associated colloids.
Examples : Soaps and synthetic detergents.
(ii) O/W emulsions : In O/W emulsions, water acts as dispersion medium. Such emulsions are unstable and sometimes they saparate into two LAYERS on standing.
Examples of this type of emulsions are milk and vanishing cream.
