Describe briefly the nature of bonding in metal carbonyl. |
| Answer» Solution :In metal carbonyl, there is `sigma`-bonding as WELL as `pi`-bonding. `sigma`-bond is FORMED by donation of lone pair of electrons of LIGAND CO to the VACANT d-ORBITAL of transition metal, whereas `pi` bond is formed by donation of a pair of electrons from filled d-orbital of the metal to the vacant antibonding molecular orbital of carbon monoxide. | |
