Seeing that it was difficult for him to escape, Griffin said he would surrender. Jaffers allowed him to surrender and produced a pair of handcuffs. But Griffin had a different plan. He immediately took off all his clothes and became totally invisible.  

After becoming totally invisible, Griffin beat everyone badly. He hit Sandy Wadgers, Phipps, the Unitarian, Henfrey, Huxter, and Jaffers was STRUCK under the jaw. However, Jaffers kept holding the invisible man. Finally, the constable was beaten so badly that he became unconscious. Griffin escaped from the inn.
