Describe the following : (i) Cross-aldol condensation, (ii) Haloform reaction. |
|
Answer» Solution :Cross-aldol condensation. The aldol condensation between two DIFFERENT aldehydes is called cross-aldol condensation. e.g., `HCHO+CH_(3)CHO to underset(beta-"Hydroxypropionaldehyde")(HO-CH_(2)-CH_(2)-CHO)` (ii) Haloform reaction. The `CH_(3)-underset(O)underset(||)C-` or `CH_(3)-underset(OH)underset(|)CH-` groups when treated with halogen and an excess of alkali form HALOFORMS. This reaction is called haloform reaction. e.g., `CH_(3)CH_(2)OH+4I_(2)+6NaOH overset(Delta)to underset("Iodoform")(CHI_(3))+HCOONa +5NaI+5H_(2)O` |
