Describe the one major type of semiconductors and contrast their conduction mechanism. |
Answer» SOLUTION :Semiconductor : The SOLIDS which have intermediate conductivities generally from `10^(-6)` to `10^(4)` (ohm `m^(-1)`) are called as SEMICONDUCTORS. e.g., silicon, GERMANIUM etc. (i) n-type semiconductor : (a) It is produced by doping silicon with a group-15 element such as P, As, Sb (dopant). (b) The dopant atom (contains 5 valence electrons) uses four of Si electrons for covalent bonding but the fifth is extra and become delocalised. (c) This delocalised `e^(-)` increases the conductivity. |
